Editor’s Letter

Issue No. 31

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving and enjoyed our beautiful weather and incredible Palos Verdes sunsets. We hope that you enjoy our Holiday issue. It was so much fun watching Piney: The Lonesome Pine, A Holiday Classic. Jay and Jane Bakerink are relatively new to the community but their tenacious and thoughtful journey in making Piney come to life is extraordinary. The message behind the animation is for all ages. We also got Robert Bell to share his delicious Butternut Squash Soup with Ham recipe with us. We know if it’s Robert’s recipe, it will be delicious! As always, our Around Town is bursting with events! I had the pleasure of hosting the launch party for Coastal California, The Wildlife at Shade Redondo. What a magical night celebrating the completion of this project. It is the second book for PV Publications, our sister company. I had the honor of co-creating it with Amber Becerra and featuring Jeff Corwin, with most of the proceeds going directly to the organizations in it, directly helping the animals. Finally, thank you Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce for awarding Palos Verdes Magazine a 2022 Excellence in Business Award! We are beyond thrilled and thankful. Our journey has been challenging and we continue to try our best to do this amazing community justice. We thank you for your support and patience in watching us grow.

“May you always remember how special you are.” —Jane West Bakerink

Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o b y B re n d a C a s h

In the festive story Piney: The Lonesome Pine – A Holiday Classic, Grandpa Sid remarks “Life’s precious journey is a mystery, and you never know where it’s going to take you,” Piney only has one wish – for a little girl to plant him as a seed on her Grandpa’s Christmas tree farm. Winter arrives and Piney is accidentally whisked from the tree farm, his great adventure begins. True to Grandpa Sid’s words, Piney has taken Palos Verdes-based, British-born author/Piney creator Jane West Bakerink and husband/collaborator Jay Bakerink on a journey they had envisioned for years. The Bakerinks are thrilled to share their labor of love and brighten the world this Holiday season. In December 2020, Piney: The Lonesome Pine A Holiday Classic, the animated movie, premiered in the U.S. on The Disney Channel, Disney Junior and DisneyNow and was their most-watched holiday special. It is now in 70 countries/territories and seven different languages. Grandpa Sid’s performance, voiced by Sir Jonathan Pryce, was nominated for an Emmy®. Today, the 32-page picture book, Piney: The Lonesome Pine - A Holiday Classic, adapted from the animated special and published globally by Running Press Kids, is available wherever books are sold. Twenty-plus years ago, the little Christmas tree came to life. In her heart, Jane knew something big was happening when she and Jay in 1999 drove past a Christmas tree lot. Her inspiration came when she saw trees for sale long after the Holiday had ended. She felt bad for them and commented “I wonder what happens to those poor trees. They look perfect.” Growing up in Great Britain, Jane was a performer on stage and screen who loved to write, so when the Piney vision struck, she recognized she was onto something and immediately set pen to paper. Within months, she had written a book. When she began pitching The Lonesome Pine to publishers, she realized that controlling the book and the story’s integrity would not be possible if she gave up authority and oversight. So, she decided to bring the book to life herself. Twenty years ago, self-publishing was almost unheard of but that didn’t deter her. After dozens of trips to the library and painstaking research, Jane West Bakerink proudly self-published The Lonesome Pine, bringing her brainchild to the cosmos. It was a quick and exciting journey.

Jane and Jay at The Emmys

A few months after visiting the sad Christmas trees, with her story in hand, Jane found a book designer, Ben Lizardi, who made The Lonesome Pine into a triangle book – her book dream was born. In October 1999, she hit the pavement, selling, and reading her book wherever she could. “We got it in the front window display of Barnes and Noble, around the Holidays, and very quickly started receiving requests from libraries, schools, and other bookstores to read the book,” she explains. “Piney’s rise to widespread acclaim was here.” In creating Piney’s world, Jane maintains nothing would be possible without Jay. She calls her husband her best friend and partner and says mutual respect and honest communication are the keys to their success. The Bakerinks are in lockstep, both personally and professionally. Married for 29 years, they are the proud parents of two grown daughters and doting grandparents to three precious nearby grandchildren. The couple recently moved to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and could not be happier. “I grew up in the Carson Torrance area and visited the Palos Verdes area throughout my life. We took walks on the trails near Terranea. We’ve always loved it here! My Mom and Dad took me to Marineland; we cherish Palos Verde’s memories. We love the community, the businesses, the people, the tranquility, and the beauty of PV,” comments Jay. 2022 | Holiday Issue 31 | PVMagazine | 15

As with their charmed life together, they always had a clear vision of what they wanted their story to be. “We knew it would resonate. Each person is unique and special – whether you’re two or 102, we all relate to Piney,” Jane says. Over the years, the couple received many offers to buy rights to The Lonesome Pine but their unyielding passion for Piney and the world they created together never waned. Instead, just as they together made The Lonesome Pine, they decided to create the animation themselves. “We believed in the project so much that we sold our house in Manhattan Beach to start the process,” explains Jay. “So many people thought that was a gutsy move but it was natural to us. We’ve never looked back. It was a no-brainer and it has been an incredible adventure.” The Bakerinks leveraged everything they owned to form their own production company. “It took many years of finding the right people with whom to work for the fruition of the animation project,” Jay says. “We started in 2013 when Jane wrote the screenplay. We thought, “Let’s make it into an animation. We pitched it and pitched. They [prospects] wanted to do it their way and it just wasn’t the way we wanted to do it. In my many years of being in the entertainment industry I’ve worn several hats as a writer, producer, director, and editor. One day Jane and I just looked at each other and said with both of our experiences we can do this ourselves. Finally, in 2017, we said that’s it! Let’s do it ourselves.” Together, they formed Haylett Entertainment LLC, and along with partners Hardy Howl Films and Open Range Entertainment, Piney: The Lonesome Pine - A Holiday Classic was released to audiences in December 2020. The animated story, born from Jane’s imagination, follows a little sapling on the way to becoming a Christmas tree and is filled with hidden clues and references called “Easter eggs.” “These hidden Easter eggs are things that nobody except the creators would know about,” Jay says. Usually, tough-to-spot Easter eggs reveal clues or details about the story, paying homage to a creator’s inspiration. They are commonly found in movies, television shows, and video games and can be anything from a private joke to a hidden love letter to fans. In the case of Piney: The Lonesome

Pine - A Holiday Classic, audiences would never know Easter eggs are hidden everywhere, from the main character’s face to a “special” repeated phrase or a word found in the dialogue. ” Our granddaughter has a mole on her cheek, so we thought Georgie should also have one. Grandpa Sid calls Georgie, “Sugarplum” as did Jay’s dad who called his granddaughter the same. Another example is on Grandpa Sid’s truck; the license plate is our anniversary date,” explains Jay. As the animation evolved, the Bakerinks procured top talent like Sir Jonathan Pryce, who plays Grandpa Sid, Simon Pegg who plays Jackster the dog, and Jason Anthony who plays Piney, as well as Lesley Nicol, Mrs. Patmore on Downton Abbey, who plays a Forever Tree. Jane wrote two of the songs and the original score was composed by Timothy Williams and recorded at the famed Abbey Road Studios in London..This Upbeat, warm, heartfelt music is available on Amazon, iTunes and DisneyNow. Today, the Bakerinks are overjoyed with their success and excited to share it with the world. As Piney, Jackster, Grandpa Sid, and Georgie teach audiences about everlasting love and friendship, Jane and Jay Bakerink hope their beloved story becomes part of every family’s Holiday tradition. Jane says and signs in all her books, “May you always remember how special you are.”

Piney: The Lonesome Pine - A Holiday Classic, by author Jane West Bakerink, is globally published by Hachette Book Group/ Running Press Kids, available wherever books are sold. To learn more about Piney and author events please go to HaylettEntertainment.com.

H OL I DAY

SPirit In the spirit of the holiday season, PV Magazine asked the community to share with us a few of the ways they celebrate the season.

Homemade Traditions Amy Espinosa and family take a hands-on approach to Christmas “Each year we make each other a significant ornament representing the year. One of our favorite ornaments is from 2020, our first ultrasound photo of our son Corey. This year, we add a peacock ornament that symbolizes all the wonderful memories we have shared since living in Lunada Bay. For example, outdoor walking through our dream neighborhood and spotting peacocks along the way. One of the most unique traditions we celebrate are those that my husband and I incorporated from the very different home states from which we hail. Brian, originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, lights our walkways on Christmas Eve with Farolitos (luminarias), one of the most well-known Christmas traditions from Santa Fe. Being a fashion designer, I like to get creative and make a spread of traditional Kentucky delicacies on Christmas day, which include favorites like cherry cheesecake, bourbon glazed ham, and, of course —bourbon, spiced apple cider for the adults.”

A Very Casey Christmas This UK Expat Keeps Family Traditions Alive in Lunada Bay

Ben Casey tells us that the traditions in the home he shares with his three sons (Leo, Heath, and River) are the culmination of traditions informed by his path across three continents to Lunada Bay.

“The foundation comes from frosty (sometimes white) Christmases in the UK. My Mom was the fiercest protector of the sanctity of the Christmas spirit. She loved it so much and many of the traditions we maintain are in memory of her enjoyment of the magic of Christmas and the fun of suspending disbelief to see the world through children’s eyes. So, the English influence has us watching ”The Snowman” on Christmas Eve, savoring bacon butties and tins of Quality Street chocolates (that inevitably end with the orange and strawberry soft centers that our family is trained to avoid), and watching the Queen’s Speech on Christmas morning. The board games, essential to indoor cold Christmases, give way to more outdoor traditions formed by 12 years of living in Australia. Competitive run-arounds on the PV High field get the appetite up, but the centerpiece is the Boxing Day swim in the bay. Aussie beach Christmases recreated with a dip in the Pacific. Fortunately, in comparison, the boys were too young to remember how warm it was on the other side of the Pacific. Scrambling down the Lunda Bay bluffs makes this a transplanted tradition with a distinctly local flavor. Mostly, Casey Christmases is about getting the family together. With the absence of relatives spread across the UK and Australia, we love to welcome our neighbors and U.S. friends to help offload the orange and strawberry creme Quality Streets chocolates.”

Sierra Plecas

Enjoys Family Time & Life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula “Every year our family celebrates Christmas by baking cookies together for neighbors and firefighters. We absolutely love handing them out and making someone’s day brighter. On Christmas day, another one of our traditions is to head down to Terranea and walk along the shore, taking in all the scenery and just feeling blessed to live in such a beautiful place like Palos Verdes. Nowhere else feels more like home. After arriving home, that’s when we open presents. To us, Christmas morning is more about being together than gifts. We spend most of the day cooking and talking about what part of the day we liked most, and drinking lots of wine!”

Chef Robert Bell

Enjoys Family Time & Life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula “I love cooking and gathering with family and friends. I always love sitting around the table with fifteen or twenty people and just the dynamics of that. Everyone talking about food. It’s the most important thing. It’s what we do, it’s what we love.”

Chef Robert with his mother, Joyce

Butternut Squash Soup with Ham Robert Bell of Mama Terano’s Kitchen shares his recipe of Butternut Squash Soup with Ham.

Ingredients: 3 Cups diced onions 4 Butternut squash (5 to 6 pounds) 2 Quarts chicken stock 4 Ounces sweet butter, plus 2 tbs 6 Ounces ham (I like Smithfield) 2 Cups Madeira wine 2 Cups heavy cream Salt and pepper or Tabasco to taste Vanilla extract to taste

Directions: 1. Cut squash in half-lengthwise. Remove seeds and fibers 2. Rub with two tablespoons butter and bake at 375 degrees for 90 minutes until fork-tender 3. Sauté the onion in butter in pot that will be used for soup 4. Remove the skin from squash and puree with as much chicken stock as needed 5. Add the squash puree to the soup pot along with remaining chicken stock, wine and cream 6. Bring soup to a simmer and add the ham 7. Let simmer for approximately 20 minutes 8. Taste and season with Tabasco, salt and then vanilla This is a great soup because it can be prepared several days before and gently, reheated. If you like, you can garnish with parsley! 2022 | Holiday Issue 31 | PVMagazine | 25

Uplifting Public Art by PVE Student Dagny Tang, fourth grader at Montemalaga Elementary in Palos Verdes Estates, recently had her award-winning artwork installed on a utility box at the bustling intersection of Aviation Blvd & Ford Ave in Redondo Beach. Tang submitted her artwork to the Redondo Beach Public Arts Commission in February 2020 while in the first grade but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her application became delayed for nearly 3 years. Despite the long road to fruition, Tang’s brightly colored artwork, titled “Spring Time in Redondo Beach” aims to welcome warmer weather that’s right around the corner after the holiday season!

Peninsula-Based PV Publications Celebrates Arrival of New Book Coastal California, The Wild Life & Gives Back to Organizations Featured On Saturday, November 5, 2022 at Shade Hotel in Redondo Beach PV Magazine along with PV Publications hosted the official launch party and book signing for the coffee table book Coastal California, The Wild Life. Coastal California, The Wild Life was co-created by Kristin Borden of PV Publications and PV Magazine and Amber Becerra of Marine Mammal Care Center. The duo with Jeff Corwin who wrote the foreword to the book and contributed to many sections in the book is a collaboration of nine California wildlife organizations and over 20 world class photographers, one of which is lifelong local and professional photographer, Erik Jay. A majority of the proceeds of the book go directly to these organizations to support the work they do. Two local PV High School students, Lauren Eades and Nicholas Kouzmanoff have photos featured in the book. Their photos were chosen after they won awards in the annual PV Magazine Photography Contest. This is the second published book by Palos Verdes Peninsula based PV Publications, the first being Palos Verdes, The Great Peninsula.

Courtney Klink shows off her apples

Lisa Boyd’s rus t i c a p p l e p i e For the first time since the 2020 lockdown, bakers gathered in-person at the home of Palos Verdes resident and PV Magazine Contributor, Lisa Boyd, to make special Thanksgiving desserts. Some bakers took their desserts home to freeze and bake them fresh for their Thanksgiving celebration. Others couldn’t wait that long, and baked them immediately after the class! All had fun gathering together and learning new tips and tricks from our resident baker, Lisa Boyd. Ingredients: 1/2 tsp lemon zest (1/2 lemon) 11/2 tsp lemon juice, zested then juiced 5 medium Golden Delicious Apples; peeled, cored and thinly sliced (about 1/8 inches thick) 1/4 cup granulated sugar, plus more for dusting crust 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/8 tsp ground allspice 1/8 tsp kosher salt 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoons tapioca flour 1 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces 1 egg, slightly beaten

Directions: 1. Prepare your favorite pie crust dough or purchase from the store. 2. Add lemon zest, lemon juice, apples, sugar, spices, vanilla and tapioca flour to a mediumbowl. Mix gently, coating all of the apples with the juices and spices. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Pre-heat oven to 375°F. 4. Take out one pack of pie crust doughs from the refrigerator. 5. When apples have rested for about 5 minutes, roll out pie crust into one large circle and place onto baking sheet. Brush dough with a layer of the beaten egg. 6. Place apple mixture centered inside the pie crust with the small pieces of butter on top of apples. 7. Fold edges of dough over the apple mixture leaving a portion of the apples in the middle uncovered. 8. Brush the beaten egg on top of the exposed pie crust with a pastry brush. Sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons granulated sugar on top of egg wash. 9. Bake at 375°F for 30-40 minutes. Make sure pie crust has browned slightly. Once cooked, remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream. Yum! NOTE: You can use any apple you have at home. Just know that if you use a juicier apple, you may end up with a watery pie. It will still taste amazing, though!

Buddy, Ace & simba PV FESTIVE PETS OF THE MONTH

The Klink family—Dan, Courtney, Patrick, and Cady—introduces us to their furry members, Buddy the Golden Retriever, and their rescues, black cat Ace and Simba the orange tabby.

Buddy in the Snow in Idaho on Family Road Trip 2020

What are the ages of your pets? Buddy is three years old. Ace and Simba are eight years old. Buddy was named by the children and the cats’ names came with them from the rescue foundation. Buddy came to us from Emerald Acres Golden Retriever in Rosamond, California in August 2019. How did your pets become a part of your family? Ace and Simba were adopted almost eight and a half years ago through the Pet Assistance Foundation and were Christmas presents for Patrick and Cady. When we moved to the Valmonte area from the Silver Spur area over four years ago, the children really wanted a dog as we now had a fenced-in backyard, so we gave in! Do you have a funny story about your pets? The funniest memory of Buddy has to be when he decided to eat one of Patrick’s socks on his first Thanksgiving. We weren’t positive if he had eaten it, yet, we couldn’t find the sock. He ate fine and all systems were working, so we figured he didn’t eat it. However, nine days later, he threw the sock up! Buddy loves to eat anything. Our vet said that Goldens are like goats and will eat anything! I guess our story about the sock proves that theory! Which pet is the most spoiled? Buddy is very spoiled! He thinks he is a human and part of the family. With his cute face, he gets away with anything! Sleeping on the furniture or swiping food off the counter, to name a few! Buddy has enriched our family in so many ways. He is always happy to see us when we come home. He gets us out walking and has allowed us to meet the great families in the neighborhood who also have a dog.

During our initial meeting, prospective clients seek answers for several areas, the first one being estate taxation on death. For most, it is irrelevant as their net worth is well below the estate tax exemption. In 2022, the estate and gift exemption amount (the applicable exclusion) is $12,060,000. In 2023, because of inflation, it jumps from $12,060,000 to $12,920,000. The exemption for one individual offers a surviving spouse the opportunity to elect portability, which adds the deceased spouse’s exemption amount to the survivors’ amount. Almost 26 million can be protected from estate taxation with proper planning in 2023. Distribution of wealth to beneficiaries is a second major inquiry. If testamentary intent changes, through a revocable living trust, we can create a distribution strategy that may be amended. Trusts are efficient ways of transferring assets on death. Subtrusts can be created inside trusts that spring into effect after death. These are particularly helpful when clients need control from the grave, or when beneficiaries’ situation warrants an added layer of protection for their inheritance. Probate avoidance is the third concern. Through use of the living trust, we can avoid lengthy and expensive court proceedings. Unlike a will, which must be supervised by the probate court, a living trust circumvents probate court in most situations.

Younger families nominating guardians for minor children is a fourth major concern. Through will pour-over, we can nominate guardians for the minor children. The trust remains an important estate planning document and holds many assets like real property. The fifth reason is the most important. For many, it has not been considered and it is only after I bring it up that a light bulb shines. The fifth reason is incapacity planning. So many prospective clients are caught up in the mentioned issues that they forget that they will need legal documentation and a trustworthy team to step in and help in the event of incapacity. Many clients have bouts of diminished capacity. Some eventually are declared mentally incapacitated. Estate planning during these times is extremely useful and important. Without estate planning during times of incapacity, one subjects himself to the probate court, and the potential for fraud is elevated. During initial consultation, we discuss these important issues and countless important sub-issues. The initial meeting takes about 45 minutes to an hour, during which time important issues are flushed out, and a strategy to put in place the necessary documents is created.
