Editor’s Letter

Issue No. 38

Summer is finally here! School is out and the sun is finally shining! We are excited to share our latest issue with you. As you can see from our Around Town section, June was a very busy month. Happy 60th Anniversary to Jeff Earle and The Original Red Onion. We loved seeing all the vintage photos and hearing about the history behind this beloved community restaurant. This past month, I had the honor of being on the Investor’s Panel for the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneur Program. This is the second year I have judged this contest and I can honestly say, it is one of the most impressive programs I have ever seen. The kids presented in front of a panel of judges like Shark Tank and their confidence and eloquence were incredible. Derek Gable led and his positive/fun approach created a thriving environment that transformed young people into strong public speakers with thoughtful confidence. PV Magazine is thrilled to announce the launch of a sister publication, EXPLORE. This publication will be quarterly and distributed all over the Peninsula as well as in all the rooms of Terranea. It will have lots of things about the community and Peninsula that we can’t always get in our regular monthly publication. Please check it out! We would like to thank Made by Meg’s, Meg Walker, and the beautiful La Venta Inn for hosting a fun launch party for the new publication! The food was scrumptious as were the specialty Tito’s cocktails handcrafted by Meg and her talented staff. A big shoutout to La Venta Inn for hosting a beautiful evening! Thank you, Palos Verdes, for supporting Palos Verdes Magazine. Please continue to share your story ideas and upcoming events! If you have a small business, you’d like us to promote, please send us an email!

Thank you Derek Gable for all your encouragement and coaching!

So thankful for family support!

All the best to you, PV Mag representing at the DOP event

From the small community of Arivaca, AZ in the early 1900s when Catalina Castillo, Original Red Onion owner Jeff Earl’s great-grandmother, operated a small diner and served the townspeople and local mine operators many of the recipes that serve as the basis of the Original Red Onion Restaurant’s menu, to now, Jeff Earle tells his popular restaurant’s story. “My grandfather Harry (Enrique) Spiva was born in Arivaca, AZ territory in 1904. Grandfather Harry’s father, Guillermo Spiva, died when he and his two brothers were very young, therefore, Grandmother Castillo fended for her family through the diner,” Jeff shares. “Grandmother Castillo subsequently married Arizona ranger William Earle, who adopted Harry and his brothers, giving them his surname.” Harry used many of Jeff’s Grandmother Castillo’s recipes to open a series of hard-luck restaurants and small diners before opening the first Red Onion in Inglewood in 1949. In 1926, Robert F. Earle (“Bart”), Jeff’s father, was born. He went to the 11th grade at Washington High in L.A. before dropping out to join the Navy during WWII, where he served as a landing craft operator and saw action in the Philippines and at Iwo Jima. “Bart” and his brother Don worked for father Harry in the first Red Onion, before leaving to open their own individual restaurant chains.

In 1973, “Bart” sold his chain of nine Red Onion Restaurants to Host International Corporation, keeping only his favorite location in Palos Verdes. Shortly after the sale, Host changed the name of their Red Onions to Casa Maria and took the concept nationwide as their signature Mexican chain. Original Red Onion Restaurant Owner Jeff concludes: I grew up in Palos Verdes, attending La Cresta Elementary School and Chadwick High. I worked as an advance press aide for Ronald Reagan during the 1976 and 1980 presidential campaigns, turning down a White House job offer. Later, I earned my Master’s in history and international relations at the University of Southern California. In 1994, I ran for the California State Assembly, narrowly being defeated. Off and on throughout my adult life, I worked at the Red Onion, first as a dishwasher in 1972, eventually becoming general manager. In 1995, I purchased Red Onion and the property from my dad “Bart” Earle and added a second kitchen, a larger banquet room, and an upstairs office.

YEA! Honors Next-Gen Entrepreneurs Writtn by Sara A t a s h i

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) has provided Palos Verdes students from seventh to twelfth grade with the opportunity to formulate and showcase unique business ideas for nine years. The Academy, hosted by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, is a fourmonth program that includes a weekly class, introductions to local business leaders, and insight into the entrepreneurial mindset. At the conclusion of the four months, students present their business or product to a panel of judges at the showcase. The panel includes local Palos Verdes business leaders. In the 2023 session, 22 students participated, with first through fifth place winners and honorable mentions being selected for their outstanding products at the conclusion of the program. Derek Gable, the leader of the program alongside Chamber President & CEO Eileen Hupp, got his start with the Young Entrepreneurs over nine years ago when he spoke to the students about his own experience as an entrepreneur. Gable has quite the history as an inventor, with time spent working at Mattel and eventually founding his own innovation company, West Coast Inventions, to create everything from toys to medical products. Today, Gable seeks to inspire Young Entrepreneurs. He focuses “on the people skills - building confidence - learning to inspire and lead and being able to make Powerful Presentations.” Gable empowers the kids through the importance of having fun while you are living life and what he calls P.I.E. (Positive Interactive Experience). This is Derek’s mantra and he lives by it.

“ I love the program and feel the difference it makes to all concerned.”

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce puts on the Young Entrepreneurs Academy each year, so keep an eye out for the next round of applications at www.palosverdeschamber.com/yea.

Caimin McDuffie, 1st Place McDuffie invented a product called SipNGo, an essential for those who love the outdoors. The SipKit provides users with clean and flavored water using an in-line filter and a flavor dispenser from a water bladder as an attachment. For Business Propositions, email SipNGokit@gmail.com. “No need to deal with slow filters or sticky bladders, all you need is the SipKit and you will be on your way in no time,” McDuffie said.

Cameron Koch, 1st Place

Lea Yang, 4rd Place Mason Perrault, 2nd Place In second place came Mason Perrault, a rising sophomore at Palos Verdes High School, with a product called Spike Spots. The first volleyball specific silicone target used on the indoor court to improve hitting accuracy during training and drills.

Storey Kuo

Scentstone Jewelry by Lea Yang was awarded fourth place. The company offers necklaces and bracelets that incorporate porous lava beads which hold and diffuse essential oils, releasing their scent throughout the day. Customers can choose three essential oils with aromatherapy qualities like enhancing calmess, energy, or relaxation. Each bracelet can be purchased as a kit with the 3 essential oils for $18, or individually for $7 from www.scentstonejewelry.com or scentstonejewelry@gmail.com.

Two other Young Entrepreneurs, Storey Kuo and Abby Cheung, were also recognized. Kuo, a rising sophomore at Chadwick, wrote a children’s picture book, “The Magical Arguing Cookies,” and designed a stretchy small pouch, KayPouch. Cheung, a rising junior at PV, created the SaveYOU Kit which is a practical, compact, and functional kit of over 40 items to treat minor travel emergencies. It includes a grooming kit, super glue, a usb cord, band aids, ointments, OTC medications and more.

Tied for first place with Caimin McDuffie is Cameron Koch. Both Young Entrepreneurs just finished 10th grade at Palos Verdes High School, and pitched outstanding ideas to the panelists. Cameron Koch’s product, Boneafide, is “A Better Bone” for your dog. A monthly subscription service, Koch describes Boneafide as “sure to please your pup” due to its “simplicity, quality and fun of only three all-natural, healthy ingredients and with a fun twist of a genuinely healthy flavor monthly, such as bananas, apples, pumpkin and more.” To place an order, visit www.boneafide.dog.

Devan Khurana, 5th Place Seventh grade Chadwick student Devan Khurana came in fifth place with his invention, Beanie Up. The product is a beanie with an LED light in the front and a satellite GPS tracker in the back. Beanie Up can be used to stay safe and on the grid while hiking, camping, and skiing.

The Challenge

When I met with my clients, I learned that although they were happy with many of the living areas of their custom-built home which included coffered ceilings and gorgeous paneling and trim detail, the living room was never used—it had become a room of cast-off furniture.

The Solution

Understanding my client’s lifestyle and family created a solution that made the room functional again. Discovering they loved the tile fireplace inspired the color palette; their joy of entertaining led to the custom, stain-resistant club chairs and ottomans, and of course a palor-sized mini-bar. Using floral pattern accent pillows brought the colors together and highlighted the beautiful outdoor views. By really listening to my clients, the room is now a space to entertain friends and also a family retreat for relaxing together.

Call me to discuss your design challenges and let me provide design solutions.

PV Law Enforcement Proudly Participates in the Special Olympics Torch Run 2023 Photography by Eri k Jay

On Monday June 5, Palos Verdes Estates Police officers and staff carried a torch for Special Olympics on a 3.5 mile run through Palos Verdes Estates. Officers received the torch from Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department at approximately 10:15 a.m. and the torch passed to Torrance Police Officers, thus completing the 4th leg of the 67 leg run beginning in the South Bay and end as a commencement for the opening of the Special Olympics Southern California Summer Games. The Southern California Law Enforcement Torch Run involves more than 2,000 officers who proudly carry the Special Olympics Torch more than 500 miles and through more than 150 communities. The officers, representing law enforcement agencies throughout the state, collect donations for their participation and are sponsored by civic groups, local businesses and generous friends. Local officers go above and beyond the call of duty year-round with their participation in the Law Enforcement Torch Run®, which is Special Olympics’ largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle. The Torch Run has grown to include more than 125 runs in 48 nations. Since its inception more than 142,000 law enforcement officers have raised $414 million for the Special Olympics movement worldwide.

3rd annual PV Magazine student photo contest

THE HISTORIC PENINSULA The Peninsula is celebrating 100 years of history and to honor this milestone, we challenged all high school students on the Peninsula during the 2022-2023 school year to capture anything that they felt contributed or represented the colorful history of the community. We asked for no more than two entries and a written explanation about the photo and a title.

FIRST PLACE

Based on those requirements, the judges blindly chose the winners! The top three winners and received gift cards and are featured here, along with the honorable mentions, and our digital publication. Judges included photographer Erik Jay, Mayor of RPV Barbara Ferraro, and PV Magazine’s Creative Director, Lane Bullard.

Beacon of the Past

Donny Clark 9th Grade, Palos Verdes High School “The subject of this photo is the iconic Point Vicente Lighthouse. I know that the Lighthouse is one of the most photographed subjects in Palos Verdes, but shooting it in black and white helped me to connect its history to the present. I like that I also captured the outbuildings, Catalina in the background, and the palm tree stump in the foreground, which reminds me of how the Lighthouse is aging. I work as a Docent at the Interpretive Center and have learned a lot about the history of the Lighthouse and the area where we live. Visitors connect with our past by visiting the Interpretive Center. I hope this image inspires locals to visit us this summer.”

The Point Vicente Lighthouse is one of the most iconic sights on the Peninsula. A longstanding patron on the cliffs, the Lighthouse began operating in 1926 to provide better vision for sailors following several shipwrecks on the coast. Since 1984, the Lighthouse and its accompanying Interpretive Center have served as an educational center and whale watching hub.

PV YOUTH

S E CO N D PLACE

Knock, He Is Waiting

Thomas Kouzmanoff 9th Grade, Palos Verdes High School “I woke up early one morning to capture the Saint Francis door with the morning light. I have a lot of memories there as I went to preschool there. I like this shot because surrounding the church is a very peaceful garden and scenery. I think the door adds to this by creating balance.”

St. Francis Episcopal Church is situated in the quiet, tree-lined streets off of Malaga Cove, providing a sanctuary to its visitors. After opening in 1952, St. Francis has become a popular destination for locals seeking a place of worship and even youth education.

THIRD PLACE

Abandoned WW2 Missile Shack

Ryan Thymes 10th Grade, Peninsula High School “This photo was taken at White Point Nature Preserve, formerly known as White Point Military Reservation. Abandoned in 1978, the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy has allowed some pieces of history to remain untouched.”

What is now a picturesque nature walk on the Peninsula was once a military defense site. In 1942, the White Point Military reservation was built as a sub-post of Fort MacArthur. It operated until 1978, but never fired. Today, the White Point Nature Preserve is a glance into history as hikers can walk along the 2.5 mile loop and explore the grounds.

SMW Helps Teens Navigate the Social Media Landscape in a Healthy Way Written by Mel a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

Social media and technology have created a new language and a new landscape challenging society on several levels. Today’s technology brings the world great innovations and great uncertainty. Social media remains a formidable and intimidating threat to parents and students alike, creating a new and unique need to educate people on practical and meaningful ways to participate in social media. Palos Verdes High School freshman Sarah “Jay” Bynum recognized this issue and founded the nonprofit organization Social Media Wellness (SWM) to help her fellow students maneuver through the world of social media. “Honestly, many teens, including myself, are dealing with damaging effects of unhealthy social media use and still continue with unhealthy habits. SMW is an organization for teens and their parents to come together and foster healthy social media user habits by promoting learning and awareness. It’s necessary to facilitate activity that creates a safer and more welcoming space,” says Bynum. “I don’t have it all figured out and I have been making mistakes like a lot of teens but I see a need and I’m trying to fill it. Social Media Wellness is a start,” she says. Rather than focusing on all the things not to do, and ways to limit use of social media, SMW focuses on ways to use it in a healthy, encouraging, and edifying way. The organization recently held a kick off event to spread awareness about the significance of social media wellness for teens.

Bynum says amplifying the voices of teenagers in conversations about social media wellness is crucial in today’s world and one of the group’s top priorities is growing their online following in order to reach and impact more teenagers. “We also aim to get more teens involved in our initiatives, encouraging them to use social media and their influence to support other nonprofits. We also aspire to expand our reach by speaking at Girl Scout group meetings, local elementary schools, and middle schools, where I can share valuable insights and inspire young minds,” Bynum says.

Lots of Fun and Opportunities for Teens this Summer! Written by A i d a n S h e n , J u n i o r C o n t r i b u t o r

It’s time to welcome the season of limitless possibilities now that the sun is shining and the days are becoming longer. Whether you want to spend your free time lounging on the beach in the sun or exploring the many restaurants the Peninsula and neighboring Redondo Beach offer, get ready for a summer filled with adventure, excitement, and unforgettable memories. As a student, I can say that it’s never too early to add extracurriculars to your resumé. With volunteer groups in the area such as Los Hermanos, the National Charity League, and the National League of Young Men, there is a wide variety of choices to choose from to get started. But aside from volunteering, kids with a work permit may find that a job can be helpful, being able to say that they have work experience under their belt. The Terranea Resort recently held a job fair that is widely known by the PV community and accepts aspiring teens during the summer to improve their networking and social skills. A great way to get started is by emailing Terranea’s People Services for information. If you’re looking for fun at Terranea, it certainly is a great place to visit to get a nice dinner, and an even better view of the sunset. Places like the Golden Cove Market and the Riviera Village are also top picks because of the food and shopping amenities that are available. Golden Cove is popular among the students of PV, with some of my favorite places to visit being Starbucks, Trader Joe’s, and Asaka. The Riviera Village area is also a popular spot featuring shops and restaurants on Catalina Avenue, and popular places like Jamba Juice and Yogurtland. With Torrance Beach just a mere street or two away, Riviera Village is a great place to spend a summer day.

Summertime at Torrance Beach

Aidan Shen and YouTuber Shmee150 at the OC Cars and Coffee event

If you you can’t make it to your favorite artist’s concert because of summer school or college applications getting in the way, the Malaga Cove Library and Lunada Bay Park have a variety of bands and artists performing during July. The local artists that perform have some great talent to offer and welcome an audience. Summertime is a perfect opportunity to discover and explore your own passions., Something that I have enjoyed recently is going to car shows in the Palos Verdes and Torrance areas. I’ve only become interested in the past year and it has opened up another lifestyle that I wasn’t aware of before. Visiting car shows and learning a little something about car culture could prove an incredibly educational experience, as well as a fun one. Just be careful, you might find yourself going for that Ferrari you have always wanted. The activities that I have participated in have shaped my interests and my potential path through college. Embracing them is not only a gateway to unforgettable experiences but also a vital catalyst for personal growth, skill development, and selfdiscovery for teenagers, empowering them to make the most of their summer break.

The average American eats 20 pounds of pasta per year. Dried pasta varies in price, f rom less than $2 a pound to $10 for organic, slow-dried, rough-finished “Artesian” pasta, (macaroni, when I was a kid!). As with wine, people ask if the $10 per pound pasta is five times better than the $2 a pound pasta. No – it is not. However, it is much better! I think back to the time I asked an expert about golf balls. I questioned him, “So, which ball is best for me?” He firmly answered, “The most expensive one you can afford!” We are talking about dried pasta. Fresh or Homemade is a subject for another time. Dried pasta is wheat flour and water. The flour is hard wheat flour, coarsely ground, high protein flour called Semolina. Aside from the quality of the flour, the two most important pasta-making procedures are the methods of drying and the type of extrusion. Once the dough is kneaded in a pasta machine, it is pushed through die-holes or extrusions. The die can be nylon, Teflon coated, or bronze. The more expensive bronze dies to make pasta that is rough in texture, which can be seen as tiny burrs. This rough finish holds more sauce than a smooth finish and has a much better mouth feel. Drying time and temperature – the difference in texture – high temperature, quick dried pasta tends to be hard, then mushy – never al dente. This is because the proteins are cooked during high-temperature drying. The cost of much slower drying time (as long as four-to-five days) is reflective texture, aroma, and flavor of the finished pasta. Pasta is very much like bread, when good wheat is used, you get the same results as slow-rising bread. It even tastes good eaten plain. My go-to inexpensive pasta is the well-known brand De Cecco. “Now, I like this expensive pasta, Il Mulino di Gragnano. It’s really very good.” The best selection locally of pasta, shapes, and quality is found at The Great American International Seafood Market in Golden Cove Center.

MEET PV PET OF SUGARTHE MONTH Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

This month’s featured pet is named Sugar Caramel Eminem. Sugar is a 10 month old male Maltese adored by his Palos Verdes family members Todd, Natalie, Nicola and Dylan. Natalie shares more about Sugar: Where did you get your pet? Sugar comes to us from Phelan, California. Nicola wanted a fluffy companion for as long as she can remember. It was love at first sight when Nicola saw Sugar giving his classic “side eye” expression, which she is now training him to perform on command. Is there a story behind the name? Nicola came up with the name “Sugar” instantly. “Caramel” and “Eminem” both keep with his candy-themed names, while “Eminem” is also a nod to the famous rap artist, giving our small but mighty pup an “edge”. What is unique about your pet? Sugar has remarkable agility and can jump onto surprisingly high surfaces. He also has an uncanny ability to sense when even the smallest of food crumbs have fallen and follows Dylan around with the hope of catching tiny particles of cookie or cracker.

Sugar loves to snuggle

What do you like best about your pet? Nicola loves when she yells out “dinner time!” and Sugar jumps like a rabbit, charging in to get his meal. He is an excellent nap partner, is both sweet and mischievous, and is equally content to cuddle or run around outdoors and play. Share a funny story. Every day between 5 and 6pm, Sugar goes to the window and leads a chorus. He lets out a single bark, followed by another, and soon dogs from around the neighborhood join in a backand-forth conversation of sorts. If only we knew what they were saying! How spoiled is your pet? He is spoiled with endless love and affection! In addition, every now and then Sugar is treated to a famous Puppuccino. A Puppuccino is a free item at a well-known coffee chain. It consists of whipped cream with no sugar added and a dash of cinnamon. Sugar is his happiest self when he’s sporting a beard of whipped cream. Sugar, Nicola, Dylan

Questions to Ask Your Accountant and Financial Advisor Contributed by Gregory B ec ke r

Planning for college tuition is on the minds of many parents. The graduation season is filling our rear-view mirror while the next term of classes obstructs the view of oncoming traffic. For those parents with young children, the answer to what college has in store for their family is uncertain. It could be Ivy League coupled with a Masters or it could be a two-year junior collegewith the student living at home before dropping out to pursue a career in wine making. In either event, President Eisenhower’s quote stays true: “ In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” Every advisor would agree that the earlier the planning begins, the more indispensable the planning is. For some, the issue is: how to start planning? As my family is preparing for my eldest son’s enrollment in Cal Poly Pomona, I thought it would be helpful to set forth three tax smart strategies to pay for college. My goal is to help motivate parents and grandparents to begin a dialogue with their advisors who will help determine what is prudent based on their situation. The three strategies to follow: 529 College Savings Plan: In general, distributions for qualified education expenses are federal income tax-free, but there is no deduction for funding the plan. Qualified education expenses can loosely be defined as tuition, books, equipment and supplies, room and board and computer expenses. 529 plans are flexible. The funds can move to other children, stepchildren and even nieces and nephews who are in the same generation as the beneficiary or a higher one. Each state has its own plan. The rules differ from state to state with some allowing non resident investment. Recently, the plan has expanded to K-12 and apprenticeships with certain limitations. A common way of funding a plan is through annual tax-free gifting. Under the annual gift exclusion, one can give to another $16,000 tax-free every year. (IRC 2503(b)) For those who want to fund a larger amount, there are two main strategies: First, the plan allows one to contribute five-years (5) of the annual exclusion up front without penalty. (IRC 529(c)(2)(B)). That is $80,000 up front for each donor/spouse. This may also be a smart way to maximize federal estate tax savings without using the

lifetime exclusion from federal estate taxation. The second strategy requires the use of the lifetime gift tax exclusion to fund large gifts. The amount of the gift exceeding the annual gifting amount will lead to a corresponding reduction in the amount one can exclude from federal estate taxation. This strategy helps remove the gift’s future appreciation from the donor’s estate. Imagine a scenario where a grandparent makes a large gift at a grandchild’s birth. The gift appreciates $350,000 by the time the grandparent dies. Using 40% as the applicable federal estate tax rate, this strategy would save $140,000 from estate taxation. Contribute to a Roth-IRA: This is a choice for those who prioritize retirement growth. One can take early distributions without penalty if they are for education purposes and adhere to the five year rule. Withdraws are tax-free after 59 ½. Contributions to Roth-IRAs are not deductible. Money in a Roth-IRA may not count against college financial aid; however, money in a 529 plan may reduce the financial aid for which one can qualify. Hire Your Child: Hiring one’s child may have beneficial tax impacts depending on their age and whether your business reports on Schedule C or is a corporation. Hiring a child under eighteen years of age through a Schedule C may exempt the child and business from payroll taxes. If operating as a corporation or if a child is over eighteen years, the strategy is to provide the child a one-time-job instead of employing the child. Example: 40% bracket and the corporation will pay the child $24,000. The $24,000 is deducted from taxes which saves over $9,000. Child pays only $1,000 or so and is not subject to self-employment taxes. (Rev. Proc. 2021-45) As a bonus, the child may be able to contribute to an IRA and obtain a tax deduction against the child’s earnings. Again, in setting forth these three strategies it is my hope that I help others to begin the dialogue with their advisors. Before employing any of these strategies consultations with one’s CPA and Financial Advisor must occur as every family’s situation is different and the federal & state rules and regulations are ever-changing.

Shape them into rectangles, decorate them with red and blue fruit, and you have the perfect dessert to enjoy with family and friends this 4th of July! Happy Independence Day!

Cookie Crust Ingredients: 1¾ cups flour ½ tsp baking soda ¼ tsp Kosher salt 1 stick unsalted butter ½ cup sugar 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla

pizza Frosting Ingredients: 1 stick unsalted butter 3 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp vanilla 2 TBL heavy cream or milk ½ tsp orange zest ½ tsp Kosher salt 3oz room temperature whole fat cream cheese

Directions: 1. Mix flour, baking soda, and salt in large bowl. Cut softened butter into dry mixture using an electric mixer, pastry cutter, or two knives. 2. In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, egg, and vanilla. 3. Add sugar mixture to flour mixture and stir to combine. Wrap dough in parchment paper and chill in refrigerator for at least 20 minutes and up to 5 days. 4. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F. On a floured surface, roll out chilled dough until it is about ¼” thick. Cut into rectangles (or any desired shape) and bake on baking sheet for 8-15 minutes depending on size, until crusts have a slight hint of color around the edges. Let crust cool on cookie sheet for at least 10 minutes.

Directions: Add all ingredients except cream cheese to a bowl. Mix with electric mixer until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape the sides of the bowl down with a spatula, add the cream cheese, and beat for another 2 minutes. Assembly Instructions: Generously spread frosting over room temperature cookie crust. Top with fruit, being careful to keep the fruit out of direct contact with the crust. Pipe decorations as desired using a piping bag or zipper bag and pastry tip. Enjoy!
