50 Years of Musical Excellence with the USC Spirit of Troy Marching Band Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o s C o u r t e s y o f A r t B a r t n e r

After five decades leading the USC marching band, Spirit of Troy, Dr. Arthur Bartner is savoring life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. A PV resident for nearly 30 years, Dr. Bartner appreciates the beat of living on the hill. “I always said if I’m going to live in PV, I want to wake up and see the ocean. It is beautiful here, but now, when I get up, I see the marine layer,” he jokes. Dr. Bartner and his wife Barbara Masin met in junior high in New Jersey back in 1962 and have been living on the Peninsula since 1976. “We moved to Palos Verdes Estates and love the community here. My son and daughter both went to Dapplegray and then Miraleste High School, and at each school, every time it was possible, I would bring the marching band, so that was fun for everyone. Fun for me, for the band, and the students. I taught private trumpet lessons all around Palos Verdes, so I got to know and meet all the area band directors, even guest conducted. It’s been a terrific experience,” says Bartner. Born in 1940, the oldest of three children, Bartner was always equally interested in music and sports. An all-state trumpeter and captain of the basketball team in high school, he passed on attending the prestigious music conservatories and purposefully landed at the University of Michigan where he indulged in both of his great loves, sports and music, simultaneously.
In 1970, he was hired to direct the USC marching band. “That was a great moment. I accepted the job with great joy,” Bartner shares. “I built the program from 80 to 250 students. I diversified the band, added women, and we grew.” The grandfather of seven borrowed some of his teaching techniques from observing Trojan football practice, originating a serious intensity in rehearsals and banning alcohol and profanity. The energy and size of the band grew, and the music beckoned. “Hollywood is a neighbor to USC. We did so much. There were a lot of great things. The biggest moments, the top three, were in 1973 when Diana Ross appeared on the field with the band, becoming the first celebrity to do so. In 1979, when we recorded with Fleetwood Mac, a tune called “Tusk,” the album went platinum, and the band became rockstars. I stayed in touch with Mick Fleetwood all those years, and we recorded again in 1997 for Fleetwood Mac’s greatest hits album and in 1984 during the Olympics. I was the director, and the band played a major role in the opening ceremonies,” he remembers. None of it would have been possible without the connection he made to his Palos Verdes neighbor. “I’ve been very fortunate. I met Bob Jani, the great producer, the Vice President of Disneyland, and a Cantin during her early morning rescue

USC grad in Malaga Cove. He lived in Palos Verdes Estates, and he got me involved with Disney.” Robert Jani was the Artistic Director of the Hollywood Bowl, producer of several television specials, and a good friend to Bartner and the band. Spirit of Troy was involved in the opening of Disney Europe and Disney’s Epcot Center in Orlando as well as countless other events. Thanks to Bartner’s extraordinary leadership, the band has been to 19 countries on six continents. Under his direction, they’ve performed at Super Bowls, the Academy Awards, the Grammys, and the Coachella music festival. They’ve made more than 100 television appearances and have performed roles in more than a dozen movies, including the Oscar-winning Forrest Gump. Bartner always wanted to create an experience that the students would love to be part of, and over five decades, that is what he achieved. “Rehearsals were fun. We did contemporary music, and they love traveling and performing with the stars. Band members on the USC campus are the rock stars. The band has tremendous respect. We are the soundtrack of USC because we connect to campus, with the alumni, with everyone.” After an unprecedented 50 years at the helm of what is arguably the most recognized college marching band in the world, Bartner is grateful and proud of the leadership program he built. The Spirit of Troy is known as a home for everyone. “It’s always been about student leadership, student show committees, student selection of music,” he says, and organically, the students began to develop a sense of self-ownership. “Students love it. Everybody is a rock star when you put on the band helmet. Whether it’s a recording, a television shoot, or out playing live, the kids are professionals. I’m very grateful. I’ve received tremendous support from the university, alumni, and students. My staff has been wonderful. It’s never been a one-man show.” The legendary Bartner may have taken his final bow on the field, but his musical influence lives forever in the Spirit of Troy.

Residing in Palos Verdes and raising two children in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, Mr. Kim deeply appreciates the quality education students receive in the area. Along with his wife and two sons, they relocated to PV in 1989, and both sons graduated from Peninsula High. “We chose PV because of its excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, breathtaking views, and numerous outdoor activities. One of my favorite aspects of hillside living is the diverse range of nature experiences — the ocean, the cliffs, the hiking trails.” Born during one of the most tumultuous periods in Korea’s 5,000-year history, Mr. Kim navigated a childhood marred by war, political upheaval, and unspeakable poverty. Throughout those times, countless individuals, foreign governments, and religious organizations provided him with spiritual and material support. He remains profoundly grateful to those who stood by him, allowing him to persevere through adversity. These experiences instilled in him an understanding of the depth of human compassion and a determination to surpass challenges, build wealth, and give back to those in need. His personal journey solidified his belief in the power of education, and he is committed to dedicating his resources to serve society and the nation that nurtured him. Fortunately, in the land of opportunity — the United States — he managed to accumulate wealth through many years of extra hard work. From his life’s trials, he has derived some core beliefs: • Poverty, while a formidable foe, can be combated through determination and effort. • Prosperity in a community translates to personal well-being. • Education is the most effective medium to enact these principles.

The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay performs POPS concert (with Dinner and Drinks) at PV Golf Club The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay (COSB) rang in its 41st season with a POPS concert at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. The glorious afternoon of music, friends, dinner, drinks, and a little laughter was something new for the resident classical orchestra of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Performing Arts Center. The September 10th concert was conducted by Maestro Hector Salazar. Featuring music by Ibert, Piazolla, Joplin, and others the interactive program highlighted Violinist/Comedienne Mari Haig, Pianist Morgan Jones, and Master of Ceremonies Jack Allocco, an eleven-time Emmy Award-winning composer. COSB musicians performed in the Palos Verdes Golf Club’s beautiful ballroom while patrons enjoyed the stunning view, gourmet dinner, and drinks. “We thought the golf club membership would love that kind of music and that type of evening so in addition to catering to our normal golf club members we were hoping to attract a new and younger audience,” says COSB Board President Ron DeFrees. “It seems like everyone enjoyed it. So far we have received wonderful reviews,” DeFrees said the next day. The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay aims to provide high-quality classical music to the Palos Verdes community and has a proud tradition of attracting awardwinning guest artists.

PBNHS Hosts Saturday Night Supper Honoring Volunteers & Guests Photos by Ed McClure
Over three hundred guests attended the Portuguese Bend National Horse Show’s (PBNHS) “Saturday Night Supper” on September 9th at Ernie Howlett Park. Held each year midway through the 3-day horse show, the Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospitalrun (PCCH) event, organized by chairs Cathy Vilicich and Kristen Wendorff, is an evening of merriment and camaraderie for volunteers and their guests in support of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). “Saturday Night Supper is a time-honored tradition, with delicious food, drinks, dancing, and fun for our hard-working members and guests,” explains PBNHS Chair Carole Rowe. “It’s a night we all look forward to and is a time to socialize with friends and showcase our national horse show, now in its 65th year, “adds PCCH President Marnie Gruen. While enjoying the aptly named “Saddle Up Saloon” themed libations, guests were awed by the $10,000 Harman Jumper Classic, sponsored by Nan and Reed Harman. The Original Red Onion and owner Jeff Earle catered a tasty Mexican buffet. The band “American Made,” got guests dancing to their lively country music. Since its inception in 1957, PCCH has raised over 20 million dollars for CHLA. Each year in early September, the group transforms Ernie Howlett Park into their A-rated national horse show, creating a hometown festival atmosphere for families and riders. . Wearing their signature blue-and-white checked shirts, PCCH’s cheerful multi-generational volunteers plan and staff the PBNHS with their cumulative efforts totaling over 15,000 hours, all to benefit CHLA.

Hidden in the hills of Paso Robles is a beautiful B&B with a surprising connection to the Peninsula. Gaye and Neil Vancans resided on the hill for 26 years and were considering what to do in retirement. They raised their three children, Lara, Guy, and Lily on the Peninsula and became a part of the community through their children’s activities. Lily, the youngest, left to study in Edinburgh, Scotland, and suddenly they found themselves officially “empty nesters.” As they contemplated returning to their native England or perhaps following friends to Portugal, the real estate market was suddenly red hot, and they were being advised to sell their home. Four days after going on the market, their home sold, and Gaye thought, “What do we do now?!” They had thought they might wait and settle near one of their three grown children, but their oldest daughter, Lara, said, “Mummy, don’t wait for us, create a home, and we will come to you!” The prospect of rising mortgage rates persuaded them to start looking to buy their next house, and in March of 2022, they found themselves drawn to California’s central coast and discovered what is now Lilac Farm. As Gaye puts it, “Life takes over, fate takes a hand, and it was right!” Gaye and Neil had always planned to have a B&B someday, and now they had found the perfect property close to the 101 and 46 highways, yet hidden away in a beautiful valley just outside Paso. They set out to divide the large house on the property into two separate living areas. Gaye and Neil live in part of the house but have created a separate private English Cottage with antiques and other special touches. With three bedrooms and two and a half baths, a beautiful living area, and a full cook’s kitchen, it is a flexible space and the perfect spot for families to get together or for friends to plan a special girls’ weekend. Lilac Farm is nestled on 12 acres in a secret valley along a dry riverbed with views to the west and no other houses in sight. Visitors find themselves surrounded by beautiful vines and pastoral land that goes on for miles and will be welcomed by goats, chickens, and the friendly family dogs. Gaye shares that at Lilac Farms, it is hard to believe that you are only about three miles from the historic town center of Paso Robles, award-winning restaurants and wineries, a fairground, jazz club, and the famous Sensorio Field of Light attraction. For Palos Verdes residents wanting a truly unique getaway that is not too far, Lilac Farm awaits you. Only a three-and-a-half-hour drive makes for the perfect 2 or 3-day getaway. Paso Robles offers many attractions throughout the year, including live music festivals, a State Fair, and the The Three Speckled Hens Antiques & Old Stuff Show, plus over 200 wineries, olive and lavender farms, cheese and honey producers, farmers’ markets, and beautiful scenic drives on your excursions. Gaye and Neil will welcome you, and with Gaye’s 40+ years of experience in the hospitality industry, including 13 years spent as the Director of Community
community
Relations at Terranea Resort, she is prepared to welcome guests and provide a guaranteed level of luxury to meet guests’ expectations in an upscale home away from home experience. She can be hands-on or anonymous depending on your preferences. For those that want to interact, she will cook breakfast and bring true old-fashioned English hospitality to your stay and will welcome special requests such as baking a birthday cake or having a bottle of wine ready for your arrival. For those that just want to get away, relax, and enjoy the majestic views, you will find plenty of privacy while gathering in the beautifully furnished bedrooms, living areas, and outside on the patio. It was delightful for Palos Verdes Magazine to catch up with Gaye and find out what she has been up to since leaving the Peninsula. She has a little bit of advice for those entering retirement age, or really for anyone considering doing something new; she says, “Life is too short, take chances, grab opportunities, just jump in and do it! It will be worth it.” For more information and guest reviews, visit www.lilacfarmpaso.com or reach out directly to Gaye & Neil on Facebook or Instagram - @lilacfarmpaso.

Point Vicente Lighthouse Ghost Stories
Excerpts from Haunted San Pedro by Brian Clune Reports have been coming in for many years—some say even before the lighthouse was built—of a woman in a long, flowing white gown who floats along the cliff face atop the bluff at Point Vicente. Witnesses say she has long black hair, and her face, when glimpsed, is that of a woman sad and distraught. Other viewers say that her hair is tangled and wet, but the rest of her description remains the same. The identity of this lost soul is not known, but two stories have sprung up regarding this some say beautiful woman over the years. The...more plausible theory is that she is the wife of a sailor lost at sea. It is said that she was engaged to a handsome young man who promised to marry her when he returned from his voyage. When word arrived that his ship had gone down in a storm with no survivors, the distraught young woman threw herself from the cliffs in anguish. As reports say that a spirit of a young woman had been seen on the cliffs before the lighthouse was erected, this story may be closer to the truth. Other reports from the area include a heavy fog that appears out of nowhere, and after it has enveloped visitors, voices can be heard calling out to them. These voices call their names, whisper to them and on occasion urge them to the cliff edge. Strange lights have been seen that move along the top of the bluff and then mysteriously vanish, and on occasion, the sounds of cannon fire can even be heard from nearby.
Brian Clune has traveled the entire state of California researching its haunted hot spots and historical locations to bring knowledge of the paranormal and the wonderful history of the state to those interested in learning. To read the whole story about the Point Vicente Lighthouse and discover many more local hauntings in Palos Verdes and San Pedro, pick up a copy of Haunted San Pedro by Brian Clune. I’ve been a Portuguese Bend National Horse Show member/volunteer for nine years. Every time September rolls around, I think of setting up jumps with Ring Crew and watching the horses fly over them. The event, organized by the Peninsula Committee Children’s Hospital (PCCH), benefits the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). The event is organized and staffed by Palos Verdes Peninsula and South Bay volunteers of all ages. Numerous competitors from all over the region and local barns entertained the crowds while competing for top prizes. This year marked the 65th show after its start in 1957. It’s incredible to see this charity event’s results and be part of the cause, knowing it makes a real difference. Every year, a featured child, one treated by the hospital, attends the show as an honored guest to celebrate the work of CHLA. This year, fouryear-old Hobie Navarro, who received treatment for a severe heart condition at birth, made his big entrance Sunday morning with his parents, Chase and Mallory. Horse Show Chair Carole Rowe greeted the family and toured them around the show. Hobie enjoyed the children’s attractions and participating in the traditional stick horse race. Regarding all the PCCH members and their families who volunteer at the show, Rowe spoke about how amazing it is that they “transform a park with riding rings into a festival and horse show.” The Sunday afternoon festivities included an a-cappella national anthem performance by 14-year-old Courtney Clinton, a freshman at Palos Verdes High School. Behind her, the patriotic Long Beach Mounted Police presented the Stars and Stripes. As I stood at the edge of the riding ring watching her performance, I noticed everyone across the park removed their caps and stood respectfully for the anthem. Almost a decade ago, when the Horse Show enlisted my help as a third grader, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. At the time, I dreaded the long hours working in the hot sun. But, looking back on my experiences as a member/volunteer, I’ve made lasting friendships and enjoyed giving back to my community one weekend a year, and others feel the same. PVHS Senior Danny Stender pitched in for his second year and said, “Giving your time for a cause like this and knowing we are all making a difference in a child’s life is so worthwhile.” I congratulate and thank all the participants for yet another successful show. It’s been an incredible nine years volunteering, and I can’t wait to make it 10!

A Journey of Resilience and Giving
Written by Kri s t i n B o rd e n | P h o t o s co u r t e s y o f t h e Ka z a n f a m i l y
In 1970, the Kazan family made a life-altering decision to move to the picturesque Palos Verdes Peninsula, fondly referred to as “the Hill.” This choice would go on to shape their lives in ways they could have never imagined. For Kyle and Diane Kazan, the Peninsula became the backdrop of a story marked by strength, community, and a deep commitment to giving back. Kyle reflects on those early days with a sense of gratitude, “Growing up in this environment was an excellent experience,” he reminisces. The Peninsula offered an exceptional education, the rejuvenating embrace of the fresh ocean air, and an unparalleled sense of safety. As a result, when Diane suggested relocating from a house they had purchased in Redondo Beach to Palos Verdes in 1997, Kyle needed no convincing. He knew it was the ideal place to raise a family. Diane attended Carson HIgh, while Kyle attended Palos Verdes High School. The PVHS tradtion continued with their oldest son, Keoni, becoming a proud Sea King. “Whichever high school Ikaika selects would make me proud because both have placed academic excellence as the top priority,” Kyle says, acknowledging the educational advantages of the Peninsula. 44 | PVMagazine | October | 2023
Their journey with the Cancer Support Community (CSC) South Bay began in 2000, in the midst of life’s unexpected twists. Diane’s breast cancer diagnosis that year was a life-altering moment. As Diane recollects, “When I was diagnosed with cancer on December 11th of 2000, I was in my 30’s with a 6-month-old baby. In other words, I was not prepared, nor was I thinking in any way of hearing someone say, ‘you have cancer!’” Her cancer diagnosis, like for many, was an abrupt stop to her plans and dreams. However, amidst the turmoil, their lives intersected with CSC South Bay. Several friends recommended the organization, and walking through its doors felt like a ray of light in a storm. Both Kyle and Diane joined support groups at CSC. Diane’s group was composed of women at various stages of battling breast cancer, while Kyle joined a family group. The support they received from facilitators and fellow participants proved invaluable. The participants’ shared experiences and the emotional camaraderie in these groups were crucial in Diane’s fight and eventual recovery. What further amazed the couple was the realization that the exceptional services provided by CSC were free for all. Generous donors covered the
CSC’s youth-oriented programs provide a vital source of support for these young warriors and their families. The Kazan’s will be distinguished honorees at this year’s Celebrate Wellness, CSC South Bay’s signature food and beverage tasting fundraiser to be held at the South Coast Botanic Garden on October 22nd. As the Kazans prepare to speak at Celebrate Wellness, their core message is one of shared stories and the reminder that cancer touches nearly everyone at some point in life. They have witnessed over two decades of amazing and free services provided by CSC, and they hope to convey the value of supporting such an organization. To them, the power of community, embodied by the second “C” in CSC, signifies the importance of collective efforts in providing accessible and welcoming support to those in need. Looking ahead, the Kazans recognize that every journey has its season, and Kyle’s time on the Board of Directors has reached its conclusion. However, their commitment to CSC remains unwavering. They plan to continue supporting the organization both financially and by connecting those in need with CSC’s services. Diane has, on occasion, gone the extra mile by personally picking up newly diagnosed individuals and driving them to CSC. Reflecting on their journey, Kyle shares a quote by John Wooden, “You can’t live a perfect day until you do something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” For the Kazans, this serves as a reminder that giving is its own reward. Diane echoes this sentiment, emphasizing their sense of blessing, and their commitment to being a positive force in the journeys of others. The journey of Kyle and Diane Kazan is a testament to the transformative power of community, empathy, and service. Their unwavering commitment to the Cancer Support Community South Bay and the broader community is an inspiring example of how individuals can make a profound difference in the lives of those in need. Their story serves as a reminder that the act of giving is not just an obligation but a privilege. costs, ensuring that support was accessible to anyone in need. After Diane’s cancer thankfully went into remission, they sought ways to pay it forward. This commitment led Kyle to accept an invitation to join the Board of Directors of CSC, a position he embraced with enthusiasm. Kyle’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. His diverse background as a former Torrance Police Officer and a prominent business owner might seem unrelated, but it has uniquely positioned him to serve on the board of CSC South Bay. Law enforcement was all about public service, while running a business demanded a keen eye for financial management. The experience of straddling these diverse worlds made him the ideal candidate to support the multifaceted mission of CSC. As a volunteer and board member for 17 years, including a term as the board’s president, Kyle’s dedication is clear. When asked about his motivation, he shares that the time flew by because it was immensely satisfying. He and Diane remain deeply grateful for the gift of CSC and see paying it forward as a moral obligation. For them, serving others is a vital aspect of leading a good life. Diane, in particular, understands the profound challenges that come with a breast cancer diagnosis. She emphasizes the importance of addressing the psycho-social aspect of diseases like cancer. CSC’s mission, centered on providing support for cancer patients and their caregivers, resonated deeply with her. The organization actively encourages patients to be “patient active” in determining their treatment options. Beyond emotional support, CSC offers various programs, including yoga, cooking, and educational classes. For Diane, the organization’s presence is a lifeline for those facing the overwhelming battle against cancer. Cancer, as Kyle experienced personally, can strike when least expected. He was diagnosed with melanoma during his time on the board at CSC. However, thanks to regular skin checks with his dermatologist, the melanoma was caught early, saving his life. To encourage others to prioritize their health, Kyle posted photos on Facebook and urged everyone who hadn’t had a check-up in a year to visit their dermatologist. Two people responded to his plea, both diagnosed with melanoma, which was successfully treated through early intervention. The experience of being personally affected by cancer only deepened Kyle’s understanding of the vital role played by organizations like CSC South Bay. His public service background and his commitment to philanthropy naturally led him to support CSC, a cause he continues to champion. One of the aspects of their involvement that brings Kyle and Diane immense pride is the expansion of CSC South Bay’s programs, specifically those designed for teens and children. The organization’s commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by young individuals and their families during the cancer journey deeply resonated with the Kazans. Children dealing with cancer during their formative years encounter unique challenges.

Directions:
1. Mix butter, sugar, and zest together in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment on high for 2-3 minutes, scraping the bowl part way through. 2. Reduce the speed to low and add the eggs, one at a time. 3. Add the juice and salt. Mix until combined. 4. Pour contents into a medium saucepan (one without the nonstick coating) and place on stove over medium heat. 5. Stir constantly with a silicone spatula for 4-5 minutes, making sure to scrape the bottom and sides of the pan so the curd does not burn. Do this until the mixture bubbles and thickens. This happens when the curd temperature reaches about 185°F. 6. Once thick, remove from heat and pour through a small mesh sieve into a large glass bowl. Add orange food gel into the curd and mix well. Let cool to room temperature. 7. Transfer room temperature curd into a piping bag or Ziplock bag. Cut a very small portion off the tip, and carefully fill cooled tartlet shells with curd. Cool in refrigerator uncovered to set. (At least 1 hour). TO DECORATE: Melt chocolate in a heat-proof bowl in the microwave. Warm for 30 second intervals, stirring vigorously in between, until chocolate is melted. Transfer melted chocolate to a piping bag or Ziplock bag, cut off the smallest tip of the bag that you can, and carefully decorate as desired. Enjoy!

MEET RUTHIE: RBG PV PET OF THE MONTH
Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n
Family Members: Joanie Reiter and daughters Joanna and Julia Ball Beloved Pet: Ruthie: RBG Where and Why We Got Our Pet: I got RBG on June 1, 2020, at the height of the pandemic. My daughter had just gotten her dog, Winston, a black Cavapoo, and RBG came from the next litter. She was shipped from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to California on one of the last flights that allowed dogs. Is there a story behind its name? Yes! I was a huge admirer of Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and when I named RBG, I was hoping they would both live forever! Is there anything unique or unusual about your pet? Ruthie loves people! She actually prefers them to many dogs. There are several doodles and smaller dogs in the neighborhood that she will greet, but Ruthie generally prefers to stop, sit, and watch dogs walk past her and then she resumes her walk. What do you like best about your pet? Ruthie is really smart and knows the names of her favorite people, toys, and dog friends. She rushes to the window to wait for them if I say they’re visiting or excitedly gets in the car to go visit. She always knows when we are getting closer to their houses. RBG rarely barks, except at squirrels that she chases in the backyard, and she loves it when people stop to talk to her on walks. Ruthie will crawl over to them, roll on her back, and wait for them to tickle her tummy. She loves kids, and likes to lick my new granddaughter’s toes! Any funny stories? Our old mailman, Ray, always left treats for Ruthie in the mailbox, so daily she sat in the window waiting for him to come. If we were on a walk, and she saw a mail truck, Ruthie would sprint to catch it and see if it was Ray. If it was, and he was stopped, she would sit patiently outside the open door and wait for her treat. Sadly, Ray has changed routes, so Ruthie is slowly adjusting to that fact but still looks for him in every truck we walk by.
How spoiled is your pet? Ruthie has lots of toys, sits in a car seat on the passenger side of the car (she loves looking out the window), and waits excitedly for freshly poached chicken in her food at dinner. What else should we know about your pet and how your pet has enriched your home/family? Our family has always had dogs. When my two girls were young, we had a wonderful chocolate lab named Bono and when she was ten, we were gifted Lily, a Maltese. Bono and Lily were best friends. When Bono died, Lily was so sad that we got Lucy another Maltese. Lily and Lucy lived until 15 and 13 and sadly died within four months of one another. I wasn’t sure if I would get another dog, but when the pandemic hit a year later, my daughter introduced me to Winnie and then found his mother was having another litter. Ruthie was a blessing during the isolation of the pandemic and dogs bring such unconditional love to a family. If you would like your pet to be featured as the PV Pet of the month email: info@palosverdesmagazine.com

Pursue Financial Freedom with Arise Private Wealth Written by Me l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n
Arise Private Wealth is an independent, boutique financial services firm located in the heart of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The team is dedicated to helping clients move closer to realizing their financial goals whether it be retirement planning, college planning, or creating a family legacy together. The Arise Private Wealth team understands each client’s circumstances are unique and each individual deserves a dynamic strategy that is tailored specifically to them. The team focuses on financial planning and retirement income distribution strategies. Wealth management encompasses more than managing your investments. Get to know the Arise team so they can get to know you and continue to strive to develop a complete understanding of your financial goals. What connects you to Palos Verdes? Steve Carlsen Managing Partner, Wealth Advisor: We raised our children in San Pedro through elementary school at White Point Elementary, and in 2006 moved to Palos Verdes in Ladera Linda for the schools with one daughter graduating from Chadwick, and the other from PV High. Both schools provided excellent education and set our daughters up for top-tier universities. Sathya Chey Patterson Managing Partner Wealth Advisor: While not all members of our team live in Palos Verdes, we all feel very connected to the residents and the local business community. We opened our doors here in 2007 and have been honored to serve and build relationships with the Palos Verdes community members ever since.
Sathya Chey Patterson Managing Partner, Wealth Advisor: I love how serene, peaceful, and welcoming the community of PV is. Maybe it’s because the community makes a priority to take care of their city landscapes or its connection to the ocean, but everyone always seems so relaxed and positive. We made sure that connection with nature is present in our office as well with plenty of plant life in and around our office and an outdoor meeting space that we enjoy using with clients and our team. We are grateful for our Palos Verdes community, clients, and partners, and we look forward to many more years of serving this gorgeous and warm community. Arise Private Wealth managers work side-by-side with clients to create a plan, and then assist you in implementing that plan. For clients who are busy caring for their families, focusing on their careers, or growing their businesses, having a wealth advisor ensures that your financial well-being is cared for with the same level of passion and dedication that you have for your families and life’s work.
Steve Surfing at Royal Palms
What makes PV so great? Steve Carlsen Managing Partner, Wealth Advisor: I love the beauty and resources of the Peninsula. All of our team members enjoy the beaches, surfing the peninsula, swimming, stand-up paddling, and the PV trails for walking & mountain biking. PV is a wonderful place to raise kids and to enjoy an outdoor & ocean lifestyle. We took full advantage of the Portuguese Bend Club - a great place to enjoy the ocean, friends, and family.
