I was 13 years old when I got my first job and it was at the General Store sweeping the parking lot. When I was in high school I was slinging sandwiches , at Kelly s Korner. The Peninsula is in my DNA.

HOME GROWN AND HOME BREWS In order to understand the dynamics behind Michael Zislis, it is important to know about his Palos Verdes childhood and how it set the stage for his innovative entrepreneurial spirit that led him to where he is today. He boasts a huge portfolio packed with a variety of restaurants, luxury hotel concepts and a philanthropic community spirit that commands the respect of the entire South Bay. His connection to the Palos Verdes community is one that he gratefully acknowledges. His father, George, was a cardiologist and his mother, Rose, stayed home to take care of Michael and his eight brothers and sisters. Four of the eight kids were adopted, including Michael. He was born in Compton and became part of the Zislis family at seven days old. He attended Dapplegray, Rancho Vista and Rolling Hills High School. The Zislis family home was located behind the General Store in Rolling Hills Estates. At 13-years-old, he got a job there sweeping the parking lot on the weekends. He learned how to brew beer that same year. Before cell phones and the internet, there was Popular Science Magazine, where he got the idea to order his first home brewing kit. The Post Office next to the General Store is where he bought and mailed the money order for his first kit. “It was $16.95 plus postage and six weeks later, the kit was delivered” said Zislis. “I was experimenting and aging beer in one of the refrigerators in our garage because with nine kids, you need multiple refrigerators.” He laughed and went on to tell us that his parents thought it was part of “an experiment for a science project and at age 13, I think more than anything, I just wanted to be able to make my own alcohol to drink because I thought it was cool.”

He went to USC, was majoring in economics and was simultaneously becoming a master brewer. He realized that school wasn’t for him and dropped out to follow his passion, brewing beer. The story switches back to PV as he credits a Palos Verdes family, the Johnsons, as “giving him his first big break” by letting him lease their building in Hermosa Beach, which he says, “was the perfect location for a brewery.” This first brewery in Hermosa was funded by investors and began his epic 30-year journey of building breweries, restaurants and a nationally recognized luxury-hotel brand, Shade Hotel. Michael’s innovative entrepreneurial spirit is the reason for his 30-year tenure. He once again rose to the occasion during the pandemic by lobbying for more outdoor seating solutions for local restaurants in the South Bay. He came up with creative ideas for matching gift cards to support his employees and while other restaurants were closing, he bought a new building for a restaurant to launch his latest and greatest, The Brews Hall in Hermosa Beach. Coming full circle and returning to where it started continues to be a theme in this story. Twenty five years ago, he owned and opened his first brewery, Brewski’s which was at the exact same location where The Brews Hall is today. He sold Brewski’s to a business partner back then who turned it into a Mediterranean restaurant. He laughed and said, “I couldn’t even drive through Hermosa Beach for five years because I was so mad, but now I’m back!”

PV Native Michael Zislis Returns to his PV Roots

FAMILY AND PHILANTHROPY It is hard to tell if it was his upbringing or simply part of his makeup but once you talk to him, one thing’s for sure: he works hard and cares very deeply about his family and community. I immediately got the sense from talking to him that he loves people and that’s at the core of everything he does for his family, community and employees. Michael lives in Manhattan Beach with his six children and they range in age from 29 to 10-year-old twins. His wife, Andrea, helped him raise the two older children from a previous relationship. Two of his children go to school in Palos Verdes. He tells us “It almost seems natural to me to have a bunch of kids since I came from a family with nine.”

Success means nothing if it is not shared with others who are less fortunate. I am grateful that my successes have afforded me the opportunity to do so.

We met up with him a few times this month and the more people we talked to about this story, the more kudos he got for not just his business savvy but also for his philanthropic spirit. The first time we ran into him was at Walk with Sally’s summer fundraising event, White Light White Night. As we started our walk around the food area, we noticed that most of the restaurants represented were owned by Zislis and two of our favorite samplings were from his places. Wrapping up our interview, we asked Michael to tell us one of the things of which he is most proud. “My wife knows... one of the things I am very passionate about is being asked to join the Board of Directors at Torrance Memorial Hospital.” Judith Gassner, Senior Development/ Principal Gifts at Torrance Memorial, told us, “Michael has always had a passion for Torrance Memorial. Growing up with eight siblings, Torrance Memorial was the family hospital and his children were born here. Michael’s generosity knows no bounds and his entrepreneurial DNA shines in the boardroom. Gifted with unfailing good will, we are grateful for his never-ending support.” From philanthropy to his own business ventures, Michael’s passion and love for the Peninsula and entire South Bay, shines through all that he does.

In 1938, Rolling Hills took a big leap forward by opening the Rolling Hills Market, next known as the “General Store” where such staples as a post office, clothing store, feed store, sandwich shop and more have existed over the years. The area was sparsely lined with new homes and the “Farm-to-Market” road project was an installed street that went from Anaheim Street and Gaffey Street through Malaga Cove. Rolling Hills Market found itself perfectly nestled between the two stops. People would pull up to the modest white structure and park their horses and cars for fresh local produce. A.E Hanson, Landscape Architect and president of The Palos Verdes Corporation, recalled the bust of the depression of ’29 slowing down the economic expansions that was originally intended for the area, creating a more modest “country lifestyle” rather than the affluent community decorated with spacious estates that had been originally planned. As a result, the small local market was a perfect fit, keeping the isolated community away from the bang and boom environment in local towns. There are some things better left untouched and our General Store is one of them. It has served generations who have identified it as part of their upbringing, giving memories to so many who have grown up here. September | 2021 | PVMAGAZINE | 14

This simplistic representation of a lost time has remained a treasure in the community. The latest generation celebrates Kelly’s Korner, a larger-than-life sandwich shop in the smallest part of the structure. Kelly’s Korner is a family run establishment (still owned by Brian Kelly who took it over from his father) and a legendary stop for a sandwich that takes your taste buds back in time. Remember when food was real and a few bites meant something? It still does here and the big question one is left with is, “Now what do I do with the other three-quarters of this monster sandwich?” We are no stranger to local legends in this community. We love our history and we love watching members of our community make history. The General Store is not just an old structure, but an ingredient that runs parallel with giants like Olmsted, Vanderlip and Hanson. The old wood boards and red-roof structure has seen over 80 years of service to our community. The character and life it brings is as fresh as a Kelly’s Korner sandwich, so if you are looking to step back in time, this little area will give you that feeling.

On August 21, 2021 Walk With Sally hosted the annual, White Light White Night evening event in El Segundo. The beautiful venue was a perfect outdoor location tented in white and complete with plenty of room to walk around comfortably. It was a magical evening with a live music performance , fantastic food from local restaurants, signature cocktails and fun auction items. PV was well represented at the event through resident attendees as well as PV business owners including Lauren Dennis-Perelmuter who partnered with Suzy Zimmerman and State Farm to bring Art Box Academy to kids whose loved ones are affected by cancer. PV native, Michael Zislis showcased several of his restaurants through tastings at the event. WWS Founder, Nick Arquette, credits the community of Palos Verdes for being a critical part of the growth of the organization through the years. Walk with Sally serves children affected by cancer in several Palos Verdes schools, in addition to 74 other schools around LA County and beyond. National Charity League 2021 Senior Recognitions

Two Chapters,One Tradition

Established in Los Angeles, California in 1925, and incorporated in 1958, National Charity League, Inc. is the nation’s pre- mier mother-daughter non-profit organization. Currently, the organization has over 200,000 Members and Alumnae in 286 Chapters that thrive in 31 states nationwide. Members have contributed nearly 3 million volunteer hours to more than 6,000 local philanthropy partners, creating a national annual $68 million philanthropic impact last year alone. The Palos Verdes Peninsula currently hosts two chapters of this organization, Peninsula and Palos Verdes. They both work under the same core program for mothers and daughters, grades 7-12, to embrace philanthropy, leadership and culture. https://www.nationalcharityleague.org/

The Peninsula Chapter of National Charity League honors the Class of 2021 at Annual Medallion Reception, "The Best is Yet to Come" The Peninsula Chapter of the National Charity League, Inc. celebrated its graduating high school seniors on July 17 at its Medallion Senior Recognition Reception. The reception took place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Each senior Ticktocker was presented in a white dress ceremony that included a tribute to the girls and their six years of outstanding service and leadership. This annual reception is typically held in the spring, but was postponed due to the pandemic. 2021 NCL Peninsula President Colleen Post noted the elegant centerpieces and bouquets adorned with succulents, a symbol of enduring and timeless love, stating, "the succulents are also tenacious and often flourish in very difficult circumstances reminding us that we are stronger than we realize." Together, the 26 young women of the Class of 2021 Ticktockers volunteered 16,709 hours over the course of six years. The National Charity League, Inc., offers mothers and daughters opportunities to strengthen their special bond while focusing on serving the community and developing future women leaders. The Peninsula Chapter owns and operates its own Thrift Shop, raising revenue year-round to support college scholarships for local students and numerous philanthropies in the South Bay. https://www.nationalcharityleague.org/peninsula

“Be prepared” is the Boy Scout motto, but no one could anticipate being prepared for the ongoing pandemic. However, Boy Scout Troop 783 of Rolling Hills Estates has managed to both survive and thrive. To adapt, Troop 783 restructured the format of their meetings and outings to comply with everchanging local county and State guidelines. Their meetings went online, but scouts remained engaged and resilient by helping the community via a trash pick-up at Cabrillo Beach, removing invasive vegetation at Lunada Canyon, planting native plants at White Point Nature Preserve, landscaping for Southern California Live Steamers at Wilson Park, restoring trail markers at George F. Canyon, and building cat trees for spcaLA Animal Shelter in Long Beach, dog beds for Harbor Animal Care Center, nursery tables for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, bow stands for South Bay Archery Club, and benches for Ascension Lutheran Church. Socially distanced hikes took place and troop overnight campouts were modified to familycampouts with each scout camping with family instead of the entire troop. Camping in small cohorts was eventually allowed as state mandates were relaxed. In August of 2020, a small group of older scouts spent a week backpacking 58 miles and ascended Mount Whitney. More recently, a small group of older scouts spent 12 days backpacking Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and enjoyed activities such as tomahawk-throwing, cowboy action shooting, and learning the true meaning of teamwork. Despite all of the challenges and restrictions, eleven scouts earned the rank of Eagle during the past year and were honored at the Troop’s recent Court of Honor. Forever more, Benjamin Choi, Meiers Dixon, Aidan Forsey-Smerek, Nicky Hama, Rhys Hendershot, Chase Houske, Harrison Lennertz, Toby Park, Landon Rheuark, Tyler Thymes, and Wyatt Wang will be recognized as Eagle Scouts. Troop 783 honored Assistant Scoutmaster and outgoing Troop Committee Chair, Dr. Chip Houske, for his commitment and contributions to Scouting over the past seven years. Spotlight on an Eagle Scout

Harrison Tyler Lennertz has been a scout since he was 6 years old. He returned to Palos Verdes to receive his rank as Eagle Scout at Rolling Hills United Methodist Church after the ceremony had been changed due to COVID. A 2020 graduate of Chadwick School, Harrison was inducted into the Cum Laude Society, founded the Jewish Affinity Group, served as student musical director of Jubilee Choir for two years, was a member of CHIMPS (Chadwick Improvisers), lead the trumpet section of the school orchestra and played bass in the Jazz band and was on the Varsity Volleyball team. In addition, he is an AP Scholar, plays guitar, piano and was a member of AASA’s Pacific Vision Youth Symphony, where he played both trumpet and bass. Harrison is a sophomore at Haverford College in Pennsylvania where he is majoring in Biology and minoring in Music. He is pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine and intends to specialize in Animal Shelter Medicine.

Traveling abroad to Costa Rica and Peru to help others has given PV High Student, Mia MacCauley, a unique opportunity to experience different cultures, customs and help others in a meaninful way that she says, “was nothing less of unforgettable.”

We asked Mia to tell us a little about the service-oriented organization she travels with called GLA and share with us some of her amazing experiences through a few of her journal entries and photos. Here’s what she shared.... Global Leadership Organization is an organization for teens to be able to have the opportunity to travel and volunteer while they’re doing it. GLA is an organization that I have been going on trips with for about two years. The summer of 2019, I went on a trip to Cusco, Peru with GLA. While I was abroad, I was able to get the experience of the culture, the customs, and I was able to help people. I believe GLA provides the best trips for teens because they give you an opportunity to experience multiple different things. Because I loved my trip to Peru so much, I decided to take another journey to Costa Rica. Unfortunately, due to COVID, there were very few available locations for trips. My original dream destination was India, and I planned to work in a school there. I even fundraised the majority of my trip, which I thought would be to India. I realized that I was not going to be able to go to India, and I decided on Costa Rica instead. My plan was to continue to work within the school community and with the children. I decided to go for two weeks, and by the end, I didn’t want to come home. I believe that traveling and volunteer work are two of the most important things you can do as a growing person. August 3, 2021 First Day Of Service

Today was the first day of service. We were split into two groups for each school. There is a small school that is walking distance from the home base, and a big school that we take the van to. Today I worked at the small school and it was a lot of painting and preparation for what we are going to do in the next few days. I got to spend a lot of time in the “comedor” which is where the children eat and hang out. I repainted letters on the wall of the cafeteria. The message spelled out “Thank you god for blessing our meal”, but in Spanish of course. Although there wasn’t much interaction with the kids today, except for a quick soccer match, I felt like I really did help. I can’t wait to check out the big school—and maybe even teach some of the kids.

August 6, 2021 Today we had an especially early wake up call because we had a boat to catch. The boat tour left from a port near the border of Nicaragua.While on the tour, I saw many animals and wildlife. It was also super nice to relax on the boat and just take in the scenery. It even started raining, but I stayed outside on the deck anyways. After that, we headed back and had a traditional dance and zumba class. It was one of my favorite activities. We got to dance with partners and our instructor was so fun and energetic. He played fantastic music and everyone was loving it. Halfway through the class, it began to pour down rain and we all ran outside and danced in the rain. It was an incredible day.

Fall is the perfect time to bake! And what better item to make than this Maple Pumpkin Bread recipe with it’s moist interior, crisp exterior and mouth-watering maple syrup glaze? It’s sure to be a hit! Happy Baking!

PUMPKIN BREAD Ingredients:

3 cups granulated sugar 3/4 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs, lightly beaten 16 ounces canned unsweetened pumpkin puree 3 1/2 cups All-purpose flour, fluff then measure 2 teaspoons Kosher salt 1 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoon allspice 2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground cloves 2/3 cup water

MAPLE SYRUP GLAZE Ingredients:

Directions: Whisk sugar, oil, eggs & pumpkin puree in large bowl until combined. Set aside. Combine remaining DRY ingredients in separate bowl. Alternate adding the DRY ingredients and the water into the WET egg/sugar/pumpkin mixture, starting and ending with the DRY ingredients. Place batter in oiled loaf pans. Recipe makes 3- 1-lb loaves. Bake at 375°F for 45-60 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Once finished cooking, poke holes all over the top of the loaf with a toothpick about 1” apart. Run butter knife around the edges and pour warm maple syrup glaze (recipe below) on top of leaves. Let absorb into the bread for at least 20 minutes. Slice and serve warm or room temperature. Store in sealed container. Enjoy!

It seems any time of day and any location, someone is spotting ‘Shirtless Keith’ riding his bike up and down the streets of PV. For the last decade, he has been spotted on his $1500 ‘old school’ 30 pound BMX bike, passing athletic powerhouses optimizing their speed records on $12,000 racers. Five days a week on the road and weekends with the warriors on their bikes. From Marymount to Malaga Cove, Shirtless Keith leads the pack. He is the one to pass. He starts his days prepping his bike, using WD-40 to polish the chrome and protect the moving parts. Finishing up with a large bowl of Grape Nuts and as much whole milk as one can tolerate, he sets off to begin his day. No watch, no internet, no drama; his days are spent outside feeding every sense. He is a kind person who has made several friends; many stopping to wave and say hello. Kids, professionals on their lunch breaks and senior groups all know him. His tactful approach to simplicity has left him ahead of the pack in many ways.

“My best friend is resistance. Every time you meet, it leaves you better and stronger" he says. "The biggest enemy is convenience. Every time something is done for you, it could cause all sorts of problems. You forget how to do things.” He has no mantra, he tells time by the shade of dark and his level of keeping it real leaves you with a feeling of a lesson learned. And what keeps this biking super force fueled all day? Lots and lots of Mountain Dew and cookie dough. That’s the ‘go-to’ for Keith for immediate energy. And somehow it works. His dream bike is the one he rides. He wouldn’t trade it for anything. There is no fancy racer that is appealing to him as he prefers the one gear approach because, “You are always in the right gear that way.” Since 2010, Keith has been pedaling around the peninsula day and night, putting over 150,000 miles in the last seven years alone, going through three to five sets of tires a year. He found his dream life and he is living it, using his body to take him around the most beautiful city around, stopping whenever and wherever he wants. Never underestimate the powerful combination of state-of-mind, mountain dew, cookie dough, a good soul and sunscreen.

PACIFIC STANDARD PRIME STEAK HOUSE CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY Pacific Standard Prime is a modern steakhouse with a California vibe serving seasonal and sustainable food and wine. Kevin Leach and his wife, Caroline, opened the doors in August 2020. Kevin teamed up with Executive Chef and former Peninsula High School friend and classmate, Christine Brown to create a menu that changes seasonally with specials inspired by each week's farmers market delivery. Christine Brown owned famed Restaurant Christine for many years in the South Bay. Kevin along with Sommelier Peggy Dean curated a wine list featuring a variety of small, familyowned vintners who bring a sense of pride to the wine they make, with a profound respect for nature through sustainable, organic, and biodynamic practices. Another inspiration was Kevin’s early years on the road as a professional golfer. He drove across the U.S. and Canada, and spent months at a time in Asia. He ate restaurant meals night after night, with a fascination about how dishes were made and an interest in chatting with chefs about their creations. After his golf career, Kevin became a restaurant manager and worked for the biggest wine importer in the U.S. Kevin hopes you will stop by his restaurant that just celebrated the first year in business.
