“I watched my grandmother closely, but I always loved sitting round the table with fifteen or twenty people and just the dynamics of that. I always loved what was going on. Everyone talked about food. It was the most important thing. It’s what you shared, it’s what we love,” he says passionately. The Chef believes there was never anything more important than food in his life. “Food holds the family together. I always loved Sunday dinner,” he remembers. “I loved my uncles and my aunts and my grandparents. I loved seeing everyone every week, after church. We would all arrive at my grandma’s and sit down and start eating at 2pm and we didn’t get up until like 7pm. That’s why I really wanted to cook,” he admits. His love for cooking started as a child but Chef Bell says he didn’t think of cooking as a profession until much later in life. There was no such thing as a cooking show or a celebrity chef; so Bell cooked for fun and friends while living in Hollywood during his twenties. He spent a dozen or so years in architecture and city planning before following his calling into the kitchen in 1976. When an old poker pal asked the Chef if he’d be interested in drawing up a floor plan for a new restaurant the friend was opening in Hermosa Beach, events transpired and things quickly evolved. “I made him dinner. He freaked out over the food and he basically hired me on the spot to be his opening chef. I hadn’t ever cooked professionally before that, and I never looked back. Even to this day I say that was the luckiest thing for me. It changed my whole life, ” the Chef laughs. Chef Bell’s popular and successful Cafe Courtney and later the famous Chez Melange established the Chef
“When I was 20, I would drive up to Palos Verdes on the weekends. It was so special. On Sundays we’d drive around the peninsula, stop in San Pedro and have lunch at Ports O’ Call and then drive back home along the coast. It was very cool. Back in those days I dreamt that maybe somehow I’d actually live here”. a ton of black pepper. Then it has pistachio nuts, orange zest, cannoli filling and a pretzel.” He rattles off the recipe then laughs, “Sounds crazy but It’s so good.” The restaurant’s warm and welcoming ambiance lends itself to that of an Italian family’s Brooklyn kitchen which is where it all began for Chef Bell more than six decades ago. Robert Bell was raised in Brooklyn and began his relationship with food and cooking in the real Mama Terano’s kitchen. His beloved grandmother Millie Terano brought Italian cooking into her Italian-American New York kitchen and inspired her grandson’s life passion.

He has spent countless hours giving back to his community and feels deeply rooted here. “We were a big part of raising money for the Peninsula Education Foundation. Every year we did a dinner for ten in your home, we also started the sort of infamous Food and Wine Festival which Torrance Memorial has taken over, but we started it in about 1984 and raised probably millions of dollars for South Bay charities over those years and then we started something else called

There is perhaps nothing more significant in our everyday lives than our relationship to food. After a glorious lifetime in the kitchen and hanging around dining rooms and dinner tables, PV’s very own chef and renowned restaurateur Robert Bell knows that what we eat reveals the connection food has to our identity and that’s why he continues to create and innovate cuisine. Everything about eating, including what we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it and who’s at the table, is a form of communication that is rich with meaning. Chef Bell, the owner and operator of Mama Terano restaurant, fully understands that our attitudes, practices, and rituals surrounding food are a window into our most basic beliefs about our world and ourselves and he is devoted to nurturing that idea with new and innovative food experiences. “I’m a creative person, my mind is constantly going. Every book, every magazine, every menu, every picture it’s such a powerful force and inspiration. I am just lucky I get to focus on food,” says the man most people simply call the Chef. He invents new recipes, rarely prepares the same dish twice and shares his love for and devotion to food and wine with the lucky residents of Palos Verdes every day at his Mama Terano restaurant, located on the Brick Walk. Diners at Mama Terano experience authentic Italian cuisine along with inspired and unexpected dishes created by the Chef, for the moment. His latest ice cream sundae delights diners. “The sundae we have up now is called a Sicilian Sundae. It’s ice cream from Brooklyn called ooey gooey and then it has cherry sauce that I make with frozen cherries. Cherry spread, port wine, balsamic vinegar and

the Young Chefs of the South Bay and we would hold a contest and chefs from all over, like Wolfgang Puck, would come up and we’d taste the food and pick the winners and that was a big deal. We were always part of the South Bay and always wanted to pay the South Bay back for our business because we did quite well for a long time,” he says. Well into his seventh decade the Chef just keeps looking forward and has big plans for the future. He is calling his next venture the Chameleon Social Club and he’s looking for a location and founding members who would later become board members. The private, members only club, similar to the popular dinner club concept, will be the culmination of the Chef’s more than 40 years in the business. At the Chameleon Social Club, where changes will be the norm like the name implies, the Chef plans to share his wealth of experience with food, wine and hospitality. He expects to treat each member like a friend and make every food, beverage, event and activity decision with members in mind. “There’s really nothing like this in the South Bay. It’s for anyone that loves food and drink and camaraderie. That’s what it’s about,” the Chef says. That’s what it has always been about for Chef Bell.
In the late 1970’s he was living in Hermosa Beach when he met a wine broker named Michele who later became his wife. A new passion would inspire his move to Palos Verdes. He took up golf at the age of 45 and fell instantly in love with the game. “I was single. I was a Chef. I was well-known and the last place a single wellknown guy would ever want to live would be in PV,” he says laughing. “But I wanted to join the Palos Verdes Golf Club so badly. So I bought a home. One of the very best things about the estates is the Palos Verdes Golf Club. It’s such a gem. It’s a great, great golf course and I feel so privileged to play,” says Chef Bell. Michele plays too, at least three days a week. The couple and their Border Collie Lucy love the life they have created. “The golf club original buildings in Palos Verdes Estates has been here since 1924, it’s one of the original buildings in the estates and was actually here before homes were here. I feel so privileged belonging to it now that it’s just part of my life. If you think about Palos Verdes Estates they have the golf club, the stable club, they have the beach club and they have a tennis club. Think about that. There are not a lot of cities that have those sort of things for their citizens. It’s fabulous,” says the Chef. He’s had a special place in his heart for Palos Verdes since he was a young man living in Hollywood. “When I was 20 I had a Porsche Speedster. I used to drive with my girlfriend to Palos Verdes. It was so special. On Sundays we’d drive down, stop in San Pedro and have lunch at Ports O’ Call and then come back along the coast. It was very cool. Back in those days I dreamt that maybe someday I’d actually live here.” Just look at him now. Chef Robert Bell’s life of hard work and dedication is proof that dreams really do come true.

Tita Boulger, founder and director of Peninsula School of Performing Arts, has a well-known reputation, having taught dance in the South Bay area for over 40 years. Growing up in Palos Verdes, Tita attended Malaga Cove School and Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. She married her high school sweetheart, with whom she has now been together for 53 years. Tita started dancing at one-and-a-half years old. With her father being a singer and her mother being a dancer, Tita said that ballet has always been in her blood. Tita began teaching dance at age 16 in 1985. The pandemic interrupted Tita’s teaching career, but did not end it. She managed to host Zoom dance classes for six months in 2020. Tita then transitioned to hybrid learning, offering both in-person and online classes for her pupils. After being out for nearly two years, this winter show will mark Tita’s 32nd Nutcracker performance and the first since 2018. She boasted four sold out shows for the weekend following Thanksgiving. “I am so happy to be back in the theater,” Tita said. “It is a celebration to be on the stage. There is nothing quite like a live performance, it is so fantastic.” The Peninsula School of Performing Arts has grown immensely since its opening in September of 1985. The two original schools were located in Lunada Bay and Miraleste. When the Miraleste
location closed, Tita opened a studio in the Peninsula Center. The Peninsula Center and Lunada Bay locations serve as staples in this community, with 19 teachers leading classes in ballet, tap, jazz and conditioning. Tita estimates that she has taught between 5,000 and 10,000 students throughout her career, with some dancing in Broadway shows, The Rockettes and Broadway touring companies.
“It is a celebration to be on the stage.” Recently, one of her former dancers who performed in one of Tita’s first shows ever visited from San Francisco to watch the Nutcracker. Tita said she loves to watch her students grow and it is always a pleasure to see some of her alumni return to the studio year after year. “You can never create an advanced dancer unless they come back and grow,” Tita said. The Spring Ballet is the next item on the agenda for Tita. Sleeping Beauty will be held in May 2022 at the Norris Theater.

on saturday december 4, the Palos verdes intermediate school booster Club hosted its first ever sip and shop fundraiser in the front and backyards of beautiful homes in the valmonte neighborhood. more than 20 local vendors set up shop to sell giftable home goods, clothing, food, and accessories, and contributed 20 percent of their sales to the Pvis booster Club. shoppers sipped on holiday
spirits and scored amazing merchandise to wrap-up their holiday shopping. several PvPusd students were also on hand to help with a vendor raffle and answer questions. What a way to kick off the holiday season and support an organization that provides funding for academics, arts, athletics, activities and more for the students and staff at Palos verdes intermediate school!

on saturday, december 4, 2021, the City of rolling Hills Estates hosted the annual Holiday Parade to officially kick off the holiday season! Complete with holiday floats, some of our local marching bands, organizations and civic groups, there were local business sponsors and even santa came out to join in the fun! Annual Gifts from the Heart Program
Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance & San Pedro
On Sunday, December 5th, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrrance and San Pedro hosted the Gifts from the Heart Program that links a department with families in need to help them have a special Christmas experience. This program began many years ago with the women of the first auxiliary, Mary Potter & Company. This year, Gifts from the Heart will operate under the umbrella of Providence Little Company of Mary (PLCM) and families will be able to pick up their gifts at PLCM in Torrance. When this program began, it helped needy families enjoy a happier, brighter Christmas holiday with the gift of a
special toy and other presents. In the past few years however, less than 10% of the families requested toys or gifts. The number one request is for food, followed by clothing. Over 64 departments at PLCM San Pedro and Torrance, Providence Medical Institute, and greater Providence community have adopted families with some taking on two families. The 2021 families to be adopted have been nominated by local churches and shelters, our Community Health Department, and our PLCM Leaders. Continuing in the tradition of Mary Potter & Company, Gifts from the Heart adopted 80 families on December 5th.

Valmonte Holiday Home Decorating Contest Holiday lights photog ra p h ed b y B re n d a C a s h If you live in Valmonte, you know it has a certain charm and that is especially true during the holidays. When Kyle Daniels told us he was sponsoring his 2nd Annual Holiday Home Decorating Contest. We were excited to hear about it and get the scoop. We decided to send our photographer, Brenda Cash, out into the community to see the lights in Valmonte and beyond. Valmonte resident Kyle Daniels and his wife, Colleen, have three young children who keep them very busy all year but last year was extra challenging staying in the house and spending less time with friends and family. One late afternoon during a family bike ride around Valmonte, Kyle had an idea. What better way to add a little extra Christmas cheer after a tough year than to encourage his Valmonte neighborhood to really get into decorating their homes. “Since our residents already have some fun with the holiday lights, it took little advertising to get the word out. As a family, we spent a lot of time riding bikes through the neighborhood at night after long days spent at home, so it gave us a great opportunity to see our neighbors’ artistry up close,” he says. To add a little extra fun to the contest, he even sponsored prizes from local vendors including Katie at Stems in Malaga Cove, Locale 90, and Lisa Boyd, Kyle’s favorite local baker. “After a tough year for many businesses, I thought it would be a fun way to help them out and reward the most dedicated decorators for their efforts. Once several homes were nominated, our judges panel, consisting of personnel from our local PVE Police Department and LA County Fire Department, voted on their favorite homes and almost unanimously, Joe and Anita at 4164 Via Solano were our first Valmonte champions! This year the neighborhood has already stepped up their game so we are looking forward to awarding the winners!” He tells us. “Joe and Anita have carried on a great family tradition by decorating their stately Georgian Style home and continue to raise the bar for the rest of us in Valmonte!”

Ingredients: 1 package of your favorite pie dough (Makes 4-6 hand pies depending on size) 1-2 eggs Filling options: Jam Chocolate chips Mini chocolate chips Fresh strawberries, small diced Fresh blueberries, small diced Fresh raspberries, small diced Chocolate sauce Nutella Candy Cane flakes Anything you like!!! Tools Needed: Pastry brush Parchment paper Holiday cookie cutters Cookie sheet
Directions: 1. Roll out dough on a floured surface until it is thin enough to allow you to slightly see shadows through it. 2. Using cookie cutters, cut dough into desired shapes. (Make sure you cut out a front and a back for each hand pie! 3. In small bowl, whip 1 egg with a fork. Using a pastry brush, brush the top of the “bottom” piece of the hand pie. 4. Place desired ingredients in the center of the “bottom” piece, leaving room around the edges to seal the dough together. 5. Place “top” piece on top of filling. Using fork, pinch edges together. 6. Arrange sealed hand pies on a cookie sheet that is covered in parchment paper. 7. Brush the top of the sealed hand pie with the egg wash and generously sprinkle with granulated sugar. 8. Bake at 375°F for 12-20 minutes, depending on pie size and oven. Enjoy!!

AROUND TOWN Vistas For Children annual Fundraiser vistas for Children, inc. held its annual fall fundraiser on sunday, october 24th at Palos verdes Golf Club. the James bond-themed casino night featured casino games, signature cocktails, dinner and a live auction. the event was well attended by active vistas for Children members, their guests and alumni. the guests were also treated to a message from lynn taylor, board Chair of trinity Care, one of the 20 organizations vistas for Children granted to last year, impacting nearly 6,000 children. since founded in 1978, vistas for Children has granted more than $7,600,000.

Every day, we benefit from the beauty of our natural landscape on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Since 1988, residents have helped protect 1,600 acres of natural open land through the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Without the community’s support for the Conservancy, the beauty of Palos Verdes could have been lost. With the goal of restoring the land to achieve greater health for our plants and for the future survival of rare wildlife, the Conservancy hires goats to remove invasive weeds prior to planting new, healthy native plants. The goats eat tumbleweed and fennel among other weeds and then leave behind natural “fertilizer” while keeping green trash to a minimum. The Conservancy also plants native plants for the health and benefit of wildlife. Palos Verdes residents are invited to adopt a goat or provide plants to make a permanent and positive impact on this community. Please consider a gift of support to the Conservancy by “adopting” a goat for $100. If you choose to adopt a goat, you will be invited to a small spring event where you will be offered a family portrait with the goats (exact date in spring 2022 will be announced in April).

College students are coming home for the holidays but soon after the holidays they will be packed and ready for another semester in college. Parents everywhere have already purchased all the necessities and will most likely purchase more while they are home. Travel arrangements were secured months ago. Parents might feel prepared by helping their student children but are they really? If you’re a parent, have you considered how you would step in to handle an emergency without having all the proper legal documents in place? Gregory Becker, a Palos Verdes native and California trusts and estates attorney, says when he is retained by clients who are parents, he prepares two simple powers of attorney. One for health care and one for business. If there are no legal documents in place to allow parents to step in and manage their student’s health and financial affairs it can be a complex and daunting task. In California, without the proper legal documents a court order may be required before action can be taken which is why Becker believes everyone should be prepared. Although our kids will always be our kids, once they turn 18, they are legal adults. In times of emergency, and in order to avoid costly delays and costly hearings, Becker says all families should prepare Powers of Attorney for Health and Business for their college students. These documents set forth the student’s wishes and nominate agents (most often parents
or guardians) to carry out their wishes. An agent’s powers can be immediate, or they can vest upon the occurrence of an event such as incapacity. In an emergency, with these documents in place, the student’s agent should be able to work with the student’s health care providers, police, first responders, bank, landlord, utility providers, school and insurance companies without delay or costs. Even if there is no emergency a power of attorney can still have value. In the case of an agent who has the immediate power to act, the agent can step-in and make medical appointments or help with billing disputes, issues that are often difficult for college students to navigate. You may have noticed the library is open to the public again, and in person activities as well as virtual activities are being provided at no cost to the community. Many residents think that tax dollars fund all of what the Palos Verdes Library District has to offer, but did you know that Peninsula Friends of the Library is the icing on the cake! As the Peninsula Friends of the Library get ready to kick off their Annual Appeal we had a chance to chat with Colleen Cotter, Executive Director of Peninsula Friends of the Library. She would love the community to know all the “extras” the Annual Appeal helps to provide including many FREE online services such as Rosetta Stone, Ancestry.com, Libby and many more including new online resources coming in 2021-2022 such as Coursera and Learning Express. All you need is a library card to use these valuable resources from the comfort of your home! In addition to the online programs, Peninsula Friends of the Library funds provide Storytime, Special Events, the Teen Annex, Summer Reading programs, Sunday Hours and Funds for Capital Projects. Without the Annual Appeal, many of these programs would not be available to the community. Most important Peninsula Friends of the Library want people to use the library, because people who read have greater emotional intelligence and empathy and can better put themselves in someone else’s shoes which is so important in the world right now.
