An Inspiration to Invention

A Real Life Willy Wonka Just Might Be Your Palos Verdes Neighbor or Your Child’s Mentor Written by Me l a n i E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o g ra p h ed b y B re n d a C a s h

His name is Derek Gable and he is on a mission to inspire the future, based on his strong belief that today’s rapidly changing world will require the emphasis to be on creativity, entrepreneurship, people skills, confidence and critical thinking, sadly most of which are not taught in school. With this in mind, the internationally renowned entrepreneur, inventor and PV resident, Derek Gable, works tirelessly to influence and motivate the next generation. He helps them develop these skills and discover who they are and what they should be doing with their lives as he likes to say, “before they jump on an expensive bus to nowhere.” Gable was born, raised and educated in England and had several fascinating and creative jobs working on jet engines, robots, projectors and yes, as Willy Wonka inventing machines to make chocolates for Cadburys! In 1968, Gable along with his lovely wife Pam, came to California to live the American Dream. For 16 years he ran a big part of the Think Tank at Mattel and was responsible for dozens of iconic toys including items for Mattel’s famous brands, Hot Wheels, Barbie and Masters of the Universe. After leaving Mattel, Gable invented the Recording Real Estate Key safe and formed Multacc a company to market it. Multacc was very successful and for about 15 years controlled about eighty percent of the worldwide key-safe business. In the early 1980’s Gable formed West Coast Innovations, an invention and product development company, responsible for dozens of products in the marketplace from toys to medical products. Now Gable is hoping to inspire many others to appreciate the gift of living in America and to live their American Dreams. “Look around at your whole life,” he gestures enthusiastically. “Find out what you have a passion for and make it your work, get creative.”

Gable who is a very active teacher, mentor and motivational speaker insists that you will have a wonderful, successful and happy life by being grateful, positive and achieving what is meaningful to you. He encourages everyone to up their FQ (Fun Quotient) and do something different and fun to make great memories. His motto is “Never do boring.” The charismatic inventor keeps life exciting, making memories and seizing the day. “Don’t wait. Have fun because when you are older all you have are your memories and memories come from fun” he smiles sincerely. After 55 years married, Gable is still deeply in love with his wife Pam and the extraordinary PV life they’ve had fun building together. The Gables have lived in Palos Verdes for more than half a century and wouldn’t live anywhere else. “Palos Verdes is the best place in all of California,” he says. They’re very close to their three grown children and six grandchildren and absolutely delighted that the whole family lives and works in the south bay. Their daughter Kim lives with her family, not too far from her parents in PV. Twins, Darren and Steve live with their families in Playa Del Rey and Manhattan Beach. When he’s not hanging out with his family, Gable, who holds more than 60 U.S. patents, is focused on inventing, creating and helping the next generation achieve their dreams. He believes kids today have to approach the future differently than his generation. “As everyone has seen in the last few years, the world changes very quickly. The great importance of invention and innovation is that it solves problems and changes the world. Innovation shapes the

way life is lived and transcends culture. Kids today don’t know the jobs or careers that will be available when they reach adulthood. They have to invent them,” Gable understands. He has long enjoyed impacting lives, telling stories and sharing his wisdom. Gable has been a speaker at every middle school and high school in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and for the past few years he’s enjoyed sharing his passion with motivated students through the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneur’s Academy (YEA.) YEA is in its eighth year, offering a groundbreaking program that encourages students to launch and run their own businesses or nonprofit organizations. Each year, he has helped mentor more than 25 students, taking them step by step from concept to putting their idea in front of potential investors. In the time he’s been with the program he’s also implemented the teaching of essential people skills to the students guiding them in confidence building and leadership exercises. Two participants in YEA have made it into the national finals and achieved third and fourth place in the country for two consecutive years. Gable is always thrilled to share his contacts with young entrepreneurs. He was the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the year in 2020 and the proud recipient of a proclamation from the city of Rancho Palos Verdes for his lifetime of invention and entrepreneurship. Derek Gable is living the Willy Wonka dream and graciously sharing his secrets to success with everyone who is lucky enough to meet him.

Young Entrepreneurs visited Felix Design Studio where owner Robin Felix shared the story of his journey as an entrepreneur. In addition, he also shared some important personal grooming tips to help the young entrepreneurs present themselves professionally at the Investor’s Panel. Do you know a middle or high school student who dreams of starting their own business or nonprofit? The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s highly acclaimed Young Entrepreneurs Academy is the place! Now in it’s ninth year, the Chamber’s YEA program is a ground-breaking educational program that takes students in grades six through twelve through the process of starting and running a real business or social movement. Students work closely with local business leaders to cultivate and research business ideas, write a business plan, pitch their business to a panel of investors, develop their brand, participate in a Trade Show at the Palos Verdes Street Fair, and actually launch their enterprise. In addition to learning about the many facets of running a business (marketing, finance and accounting, technology, regulations and taxes, insurance, legal considerations, and more), the young entrepreneurs develop critical thinking skills, creativity, and self-confidence and learn about networking,

how to deliver powerful presentations, and teamwork. Most importantly, they develop an “entrepreneurial mindset”— how to look for opportunities where others see problems. The hands-on skills and real-life training that the students acquire is invaluable to them in whatever field they choose to enter. Local business leaders applaud the Chamber’s commitment to develop future business talent. Over 175 local students have successfully completed this program. The Chamber invites local business leaders to become involved with this program, by volunteering as business mentors or as a guest speaker, hosting field trips, or supporting the program through sponsorships. The Chamber of Commerce is currently accepting applications for this year’s program, which will run from February through May. “ We like to work in areas that we like, not that we feel we need to be in. Palos Verdes has some of the best views that I’ve ever seen in my life. My brother got married at Terranea.”

Appreciating the Palos Verdes Peninsula

What He Wants You to Know Photographed b y To r y O ’ L ea r y

Along with being known as one of the top producing real estate agents in the country, Josh Altman stars on Million Dollar Listing LA, has a new show, Josh & Josh and is also a best selling author. We had a chance to sit down with Josh at a recent Broker’s Open at 905 Via Del Monte, which is the home he is co-listing with local realtor, Mariam Esfahani. His big personality and infectious smile are no doubt part of what make Josh Altman so successful but after talking to him, we quickly realized that he is much more than a television reality star. He was generous with his time and made it very clear to us that he appreciates and respects the community of Palos Verdes. He wants to bridge the gap between Los Angeles and Palos Verdes by bringing new buyers that may otherwise never know about the area. Tell us about your motivation to expand and focus more on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

We like to work in areas that we like, not that we feel we need to be in. One of the things we looked at early on in our careers was to branch out to areas that we really liked going to, like Palos Verdes. We can get there in 45 minutes so we can be part of the showings, do the deals and still get home at a reasonable time to be with family. That’s where we are right now and that is what is important to us. Lots of times, with traffic, it would take us the same amount of time to drive to Malibu to show and sell a house. We began to notice that it was the same type of clientele buying houses in LA that were buying houses in Palos Verdes. They had similar price points and looking for the same things; open space, a great community and good schools. We had done some deals in the past in Palos Verdes and knew we really liked it. We think it’s a very popular underpriced market and are seeing more of our clients talking about places like Palos Verdes. They want to know more about them. It was an option that we couldn’t ignore. In order to be a complete real estate company, we needed to know and really understand the market in areas like Palos Verdes.

It’s close to LA but you feel like you’re in another world. It’s a totally different view than we’re used to seeing. We look from the Hollywood Hills and see you guys. The way PV is positioned allows for so many different spectacular views from the hilltop and cliffs. I can’t say enough about the views, they are spectacular. My brother actually got married at Terranea, so for the Altman Brothers, the Peninsula is a special place. What do you want the community of Palos Verdes as well as some of the local realtors to know about you?

We love what we do. We are workaholics and love being part of the process. We work all day, every day and enjoy showing houses and seeing the smile on people’s faces when we get them a great deal, if they are a buyer or seller. Although people know us from being on the television show for almost a decade, coming into any community where we are not super wellknown, there’s typically a lot of pushback.

People think we are going to come in and try to take over their turf or that we are a super aggressive team that’s going to try to steal listings. That’s just not who we are. We just like doing deals and getting deals done. We have an opportunity to bridge the gap from Palos Verdes to LA for buyers and sellers. We think people should be happy that we are here because we are bringing in buyers that otherwise might not know about the area and may not see local marketing that typically doesn’t reach us in LA. People shouldn’t be intimidated. It’s going to be good for the market. We have had huge success in Palos Verdes. At the end of the day our job is to get the most money possible for a property. We also love to co-list and have been very fortunate with our co-listings with agents in PV. We are all about working together.

Mariam Esfahani and her brother, Amir Esfahani, were born and raised in Palos Verdes and both are raising their own families here. Mariam shares that her father, Marshall Esfahani, “has been building luxury high-end real estate in Palos Verdes for over sixty years, many of which are some of the most iconic homes on the Peninsula. My brother Amir and I joined our father a little over 20 years ago. Amir has taken over most of the building aspect and I find new properties to develop and then sell the new developments. Amir has expanded beyond developing his own properties and is now building homes for clients. He is currently completing a home in Palos Verdes for one of NBA’s biggest stars.” “We noticed more people from other areas were discovering Palos Verdes during the pandemic when everything was locked down. The open space, the natural habitat and beautiful views were drawing people from all over Southern California. That resulted in more people becoming interested in moving to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. That’s why we decided to tackle this from two aspects local and global and Josh and his team were the ideal partner.”

Find Your Home’s Personality With endless resources for furnishings, textiles, hard surfaces and cabinetry, the opportunity to create a personalized home has never been easier. Contributed by Jessica B re n d e

Jessica Brende and her partner Annsley Marshall shared some of the personality they created recently at a beautiful Palos Verdes Estates home located on Via Mirada. This home is filled with personal touches that meet the needs and taste of its owners, a young and inviting family that fills their home with friends, music and conversation. Each design detail was carefully chosen to reflect an organically glamorous personality.

The sitting lounge in the primary bedroom is the perfect blend of masculine and feminine details. Plush pink velvet chaise lounges mixed with charcoal accents are perfect for relaxing with a book. We set the ceiling paneling on a herringbone pattern to add a layer of drama and wallpapered the back of the bookcases for a subtle moody effect.

Jessica and Annsley share some tips to infuse your home with special touches. • Make sure all walls and ceilings have texture or pattern to create the perfect backdrop for a unique environment. • Color and pattern can be a big commitment, so pair it with soft, calmer accents. • Don’t be afraid to LOVE something. If you love it— find a place for it! • Wall art doesn’t need to be framed. It can be your personal collections, instruments or more. Don’t let your favorite pieces hide behind a door. • Greens and blues are considered neutrals if using soft tones. Think of the natural backdrop of our surroundings—green landscape and blue water and skies.

Hanging some greenery in a bathroom gives an instant fresh update to help create a serene, spa-like environment.

Closets can be the most personal space in the home, and adding wallpaper to this ceiling keeps things creative and stylish.

Not all ceilings need to (or should) be white! Go with a bold color in a small space for a super dramatic effect.

The silver metallic threads woven into the celadon grasscloth creates the perfect backdrop for a room filled with music. The guitars were the starting point in the space and quickly landed as art on the walls. The mix of clamshell, natural woods and modern patterns create the perfect space for a family jam session! Your living room doesn’t need to be serious- make your space work for you.

WHIPPED CREAM Ingredients: 1 cup heavy whipping cream ½ cup powdered sugar ½ tsp vanilla

HEART-SHAPED STRAWBERRIES FOR SHORTCAKE Shaping Directions: The idea here is to core the strawberry in a way that makes the fruit look like a heart. Rotate the strawberry so the flattest side of the berry is facing you. At this angle, remove the stem with a small knife by cutting a “V” starting on one side of the stem, curving down into a sharp “V”, and ending on the other side of the stem with another curvy top of the “V”. Cut strawberry in half lengthwise, being sure to keep the “V” in-tact. You will end up with 2 heart-shaped strawberry halves. Prepare Strawberries for Shortcake: 1. Toss every 1 cup of hulled strawberries with ½ - 1 teaspoon of sugar, depending on sweetness of your strawberries. (Each strawberry shortcake serving uses about ½ cup strawberries. Prepare the amount of strawberries that you will need.) 2. Set sugared strawberries aside for 10-15 minutes to let the juices release. Once they are shiny, they are ready to go on the shortcake biscuits. Strawberry Shortcake assembly: 1. Cut the biscuit in half, and place bottom of biscuit on a plate. 2. Place a dollop of whipped cream on biscuit. 3. Spoon about ½ cup of the prepared strawberries on top of the whipped cream. 4. A dd another small dollop of whipped cream on top of the strawberries. 5. Place the biscuit “top” on top of that. End with another small dollop of whipped cream and a “display” strawberry for fun. Enjoy!

For two of the Peninsula’s most well respected orthopedic surgeons, their Palos Verdes roots run deep and their lifelong mission of healing and helping, remains steadfast and strong. Dr. Nicholas Halikis and Dr. Todd Shrader, both PV born and bred, are childhood friends and partners at Coastal Orthopedics, one of the most well established orthopedic practices in the Los Angeles area. Both of their fathers were proud South Bay physicians and both men are proud of what they learned from their dads and the passion that they share for the work they do every day. Coastal Ortho recently moved to its brand new state of the art facility in Torrance but this orthopedic practice has been healing neighbors from all over the south bay since the 1970’s. “Nick and I both grew up in PV. Our fathers were both physicians at the same time, when the South Bay was really just starting out and we were really young,” explains Dr. Shrader. “They were both very much pillars in their specialties. Highly regarded in the very personal way they took care of people and it’s what made them popular with patients. I think it’s exactly what makes us popular too. We really aim to return every one of our patients back to full health,” Dr. Shrader says sincerely. Living a healthy South Bay lifestyle is a core belief both men share and practice. Both are lifelong surfers and while Dr. Halikis loves a game of basketball, Dr. Shrader is often seen biking and jogging around the Peninsula, just as he’s done his whole life. “Nick and I have known each other our whole lives. I’m younger. He was always the upperclassman and he, of course, wouldn’t talk to me on the street,” Dr. Shrader laughs. “But still, we were friends.” The two knew each other from growing up in Malaga Cove. While Dr. Halikis graduated from Palos Verdes High School and Dr. Shrader graduated from Rolling Hills High, both men attended Malaga Cove Intermediate. “With our shared background, interest in sports and both of our fathers who instilled strong ethical guides, it was a natural union for our medical practices,” says Dr. Halikis. Their former teacher and coach, Larry Larson, remembers both boys.“I had them when they were in 6th grade back in the 1970’s.” He says both were excellent students and athletes.“We used to have field day at Malaga Cove, where each 6th grade class would compete against each other. It was great competition and they were just great athletes. I knew them all because, of course, I was their teacher and their coach.”

Dr. Nicholas Halikis with his father, Dr. Michael “Mike” Halikis

Today, Larson is their patient. “It’s funny because Todd did my knee replacement and Nick did my hand, my carpal tunnel.” Larson recalls. Dr. Halikis is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with certified specialization in hand and upper extremity surgery. He is also an accomplished musician and guitarist who especially enjoys treating fellow musicians with hand and upper extremity conditions. Dr. Halikis credits Mr. Kermit Welch, his teacher from Montemalaga Elementary School, with instilling discipline and respect and a sense of creativity in him from an early age. “I play guitar and it was Mr. Welch who introduced me and many other students to music through the Ukulele. I was put in his class because my energy level was extremely high and my parents, along with Montemalaga Elementary School Principal Tom Quayle, felt I needed a tough teacher who could keep me in line. When I misbehaved, Mr. Welch would have me sit and write 100 times ‘I will mind my teacher’ or go to Mr. Quayle’s office for disciplinary action. Well, I learned my lesson and with all the schooling ahead of me I developed a great reverence for teachers and professors,” says Dr. Halikis. As importantly, Mr. Welch brought him to a sense of creativity. Dr. Halikis is a guitar player and it was Mr. Welch who first introduced him and many other students to music. Dr. Halikis explains that Mr. Welch wrote songs that the class learned to play and sing. “Favorites included the famous songs [at least to us students] “Woollybooger” and “Woozer”, the lyrics of which I still remember today,” He says. Mr. Welch’s influence provided Dr. Halikis what he calls a foundation for success. “I learned discipline, the importance of respect and they say medicine is both a science and art. Even as a surgeon, creativity is extremely useful,” says Dr. Halikis. Dr. Shrader is a joint replacement specialist who also specializes in sports medicine. Whether treating professional athletes or lifelong friends and former school teachers, Drs. Shrader and Halikis take the same consistent approach: every single patient deserves an individual treatment plan and the power to regain their lives. Patients repeatedly say at a time in life when they’re hurting and scared and unsure of how to proceed, both doctors’ kind, empathetic, direct, and honest approach has been life altering. A testament to these two friends who are proudly carrying on a Palos Verdes medical legacy.

Rolling Hills Market Update

What My Clients Are Saying...

In the last 6 months, eighteen (18) homes have sold with an average closed price of $4.8M and a total sales volume of $86.5M. Interestingly enough, only 16% of homes listed sold at or above list price, while 67% of listed homes had either price reductions or closed below list price with an average of 41 days on market.*

“This was our third transaction with her and every time she delivered above and beyond. She helped us buy our first home and then our second home, plus she sold both of our homes! If only Holly could be cloned! Her customer service is above and beyond. She is a stellar real estate agent and we couldn’t trust anyone else to make our real estate dreams come true. She truly cares and she is the best person to trust when you buy or sell your home in Los Angeles.”

Thankfully for our sellers, my co-listing agent and I were able to secure an accepted o£er in 14 days, way above asking, and are having a very smooth escrow. We look forward to recording an impressive sale for our sellers and Rolling Hills. I am happy to discuss the market anytime. If you are looking to sell and make a move this year, please call or text me anytime.

He says one common asset among most clients is their primary residents but wealth would include business interests, other real estate holdings and retirement assets. Early in his career, Becker obtained a California Real Estate Broker’s license and did nothing with it for a year. As rates fell, he used his license to help family and friends. As rates fell further he became busier doing estate planning by day and working on the financing files at night. Since then and for the last 20 years, Becker has helped many homeowners with the structuring of their residential mortgages. He believes personal wealth can be greatly enhanced through the proper use of residential financing. The government recognizes the importance of home ownership and has several agencies that were created to help increase homeownership including the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) and Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan Corporation.) Conforming loans are one vehicle these agencies use to achieve their goals. A conforming loan is a loan that conforms to the guidelines set by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The loan has flexible and consistent underwriting guidelines, competitive pricing, low down payment options and a variety of loan program options. With the conforming loan limit continuing to increase considerably over the last several years Becker anticipates rate hikes and believes now is a good time for homeowners to revisit their

mortgages. Conforming loans typically offer lower interest rates than other types of mortgages. Lenders prefer to issue conforming loans because they can be packaged and sold in the secondary mortgage market. Conforming loans are the perfect choice for borrowers with high credit scores, making them a great option if your goal is to get a low monthly payment. Contact Gregory Becker to learn more about conforming loans and to see if this would benefit your family. Becker and his wife Tiffany were both raised and educated In Palos Verdes. Today, they are raising their three children in PV. Ethan and Caroline both attend Peninsula High and Landon attends Miraleste Intermediate. Tiffany, who is a practicing Palos Verdes pediatrician, and Greg balance their busy careers with family trips to Palm Springs, the mountains and the wine country.

Whale Watching from Land and from Sea Written by Cin d y D o n n e l y | P h o t o g ra p h b y E r i k Jay

In Palos Verdes we are blessed with a perfect spot to see the Pacific Gray Whale Migration pass by. This month and through May, visitors have a chance to see whales pass by the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Bring your own binoculars and a picnic (and a little patience) and you might be rewarded with a sudden heart shaped spout out in the water or you might spot a whale fluke as it dives. If you are really lucky you may observe a whale spy hop (that is when they stick their head up and take a look around), or breach. Sometimes the whales are so close they are in the kelp just off the coast. Every day from December 1st to May 15th the American Cetacean Society members conduct a census of the Pacific Gray Whale migration from dawn to dusk each day. During these months you may socially distance and observe the volunteers and check out the white board they use to update with the daily and season to date numbers. Unfortunately, due to the recent surge in Covid cases, the Point Vicente Interpretive Center and gift shop are closed the public for the remainder of January.

However, the surrounding park is open until dusk every day and is a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors and whale watch. In addition to whales, you may spot a Peregrine falcon, an owl and/or migrating birds in the Native Plant Garden. If you want to get out on the ocean to whale watch, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium offers an opportunity to have a trained Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist on local whale watching boat tours. This program is a joint effort of the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium and American Cetacean Society/ Los Angeles Chapter. Tours generally last two to three hours and depart daily at 10:00am from Long Beach, Redondo Beach and Marina Del Rey. If you can’t get enough of the Gray Whale, there are a few local festivals celebrating this amazing migration journey. Although the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium has postponed the Whale Fiesta this year, we are hopeful that it will be rescheduled soon. The Los Serenos de Point Vicente and The City of Rancho Palos Verdes hosts the annual Whale of a Day at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center grounds.

Keep checking back for the latest updates on all of these great whale watching events. https://palosverdesmagazine.com/calendar Winter 2022 | PVMagazine | 43
