Issue No. 25

Another month has passed and we have another great issue to share with you. We had the privilege of covering the very first LPGA tour event at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. What a fun weekend we had getting to meet the players as well as seeing lots of locals volunteering at the event or hosting golfers for the weekend at their homes! Thank you to everyone who shared their fun BeachLife photos. Shoutout to PV resident, Allen Sanford, for another great BeachLife Festival! We can’t wait for BeachLife Ranch September 16-18. I also met two young entrepreneurs this month, Spencer Alvin and Muhammad Rao, who invited us to their “car event” at La Venta. After seeing the number of cars and the work that went into putting together their event, I knew these two were motivated. It was a beautiful day and the cars were amazing! I was surprised to hear that my daughter Grace, who is a senior at PV High School, knows Spencer and he is also a senior at Peninsula High School. I feel honored to be able to share so many great stories with the community each month. I love meeting all of you and hope you will continue to send us your story ideas, from local business owners to young game changers to once-in-a-lifetime events!

MEET THE

TROTTERS

Wr i t t e n b y S a ra A t a s h i

Dr. John H. Trotter, in addition to running his orthodontics practice in Redondo Beach, resides in Valmonte with his wife Irene and his two children Zack and Ben. We talked to Dr. Trotter to get to know the Trotter family. What are five words that describe your family when you are all together? When together, we’re a lot. What does your family like to do on the weekends? On the weekends we enjoy being outside— surfing, biking, tennis, pickleball, working out and enjoying time with friends. What are a few things your neighbors might not know about your family? Our older son Zack just graduated from Loyola Marymount law school, he is currently studying to take the bar. Ben just finished his first year at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he is double majoring in biology and Spanish. Along with helping out at Trotter Orthodontics, Irene is also a part-time dental hygienist in an office in Malaga Cove Plaza.

Zack, Irene, John, and Ben Trotter

What inspires you? We are inspired by the varied groups of friends we have enjoyed over the years. What is your favorite spot in Palos Verdes? Does the Red Onion count as a favorite spot in Palos Verdes? Ha-ha! What is a fun fact about your family? The four of us have an ongoing Euchre competition. Yes, Ben and Irene continue to dominate the “competition.”

Hosted by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy in partnership with Terranea Resort, the “Palos Verdes Pastoral: Garden-to-Table Dining Experience” was held Sunday, May 1, 2022. This year Pastoral highlighted the importance of butterflies, birds and other pollinators and the ways in which we can help to reverse the dramatic decline in populations by creating new places with native plants and wildflowers and restoring others that will enable them to survive. Terranea Resort Chef Andrew Vaughan created the event’s garden-to-table menu using the local Santa Monica Seafood sustainable Pacifico Sea Bass, Eel River organic Grass-fed beef, Weiser Farm and the freshest ingredients and flavors to create delicious and thoughtful Low Carbon Footprint courses paired with an inspired selection of wines from Cambria Estates, Dauo and Catalina View Gardens. The meal also celebrated the debt we owe to

nature for the food cycle, featuring seasonal local resources that Terranea and surrounding areas have to offer such as fresh herbs, honey, salts, vegetables and fruits. Honest Abe Cider House & Meadery provided samples, Sustainable Gardens Palos Verdes created a beautify display of local blooming plants, flowers and produce needed by pollinators and Honey Girl Grows presented a hive and honey education display for guests to enjoy. Pastoral is a truly memorable garden-to-table experience that embraces the timeless beauty and taste of the Peninsula. “The intimate setting dining al fresco on the Catalina Terrance Lawn on a flower and ocean scented Spring evening is the perfect location to offer a rich experience for guests, one that fosters meaningful conversation over a meal celebrating nature,” says Conservancy Executive Director Adrienne Mohan.

Spencer Alvin & Muhammad Rao Racing Toward Success at a Young Age Written By Mel a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n | P h o t o g ra p h ed b y E r i k Jay

Growing up in Palos Verdes, Spencer Alvin had a passing interest in cars. The Palos Verdes Peninsula High School senior and founder of the exclusive car event company SouthBay AutoClub, loved going to local cars and coffee events to check out the cool vehicles. Alvin did not have wheels of his own or any significant family connections to the car world at that time. What he did have and what he’s always had was an entrepreneurial spirit and drive and to create his own business. Spencer says that he created a group chat with friends, arranged some meets with small groups and used Instagram. He had about ten cars at the beginning, BMWs, Mercedes’ Alpha Romeos’ and we even had two Mclarens show up. “After the first event,we did four more and then on the fourth one we added more supercars to it and it was great. Super successful,” Alvin says. It was at that point that he decided to bring on his partner, Muhammad Rao. Rao is a 20-year-old student at Loyola Marymount University and an outstanding like-minded business partner. The company now has a sleek website and Instagram page and they are growing their following. With so many sold-out events to their name, they’re also growing their exclusivity. “Mo was a friend of my brother’s and he was coming out to the meets, so it seemed like a good idea. Right after that we did a supercar event and it was during COVID but it was great. Neither one of us genuinely had any car history or any connections in the car world but I know how to network and that’s been the key to success,” Alvin explains. The SouthBay AutoClub is one of the most exclusive car event companies in Southern California and the only one based on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. By bringing together car enthusiasts and the right people,, Alvin says the company is able to host incredible events all year long. “When I first created this business I wasn’t sure how it would work. It was based on cars and coffees at first we would gather then we would all drive to another destination. Now it’s more of a high-end private curated event by invitation only. featured supercars and hypercars set amongst a beautiful view and location with brunch, drinks, art and watches on display, with exclusive gifts for all members. “For each event, depending upon the venue, we select very specific cars to participate. At the La Venta event we had 55 cars scheduled and ended up squeezing in 62 cars and around 200 people total,” says Alvin proudly. “We have been able to build relationships with our members so they pay to attend each event and they know the value and the exclusiveness that we bring and I think that’s what is attractive.” The SouthBay AutoClub boasts a very unique and limited list of members, and cars that are hand-selected for each event. “We only host events with the rarest of the rare supercars, and we invite them to participate,” Alvin says. Alvin and Rao work hard to keep growing their business and they are grateful. “I have always loved business,” Alvin says. “I used to make lemonade stands and thought a lot about being an entrepreneur but I never thought or imagined this. The opportunities I have had have been truly amazing. Honestly, I started with nothing I was always a passenger, and it was always so cool to be around this community,” Now 18-year-old Alvin and 20-year-old Rao and their SouthBay AutoClub are in the driver’s seat, decidedly racing towards success and the next supercar rally at top speed.

HONOR FRISCO Has earned his many accolades Written by Sara A t a s h i

Honor Frisco, a junior at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, has accomplished many musical feats in his 17 years. Honor began piano lessons just before turning five years old and picked up violin a year later. Throughout elementary school, Honor developed his piano skills, participating in a number of regional and state level competitions at which he received top awards each time. Honor joined his school’s string ensemble in the fourth grade, which is when he honed in on his violin interests as he enjoyed being part of a team to make music. In middle school, Honor studied both piano and violin at the Colburn School in Los Angeles and became concertmaster of their string ensemble. While practicing these instruments, he still managed to keep high marks in school all three years. Honor has also continued to advance his musical education by earning top honors in many competitions. In the summer of 2021, Honor was selected among outstanding instrumentalists nationwide to represent Southern California as a member of Carnegie Hall’s National youth ensemble, NYO2. Last December, he made his Carnegie Hall solo debut performing both piano and violin in the Weill Recital Hall. He was invited back for the summer of 2022 to perform a violin solo in a Summer Gala event on Carnegie Hall’s main stage. Honor will also be performing as a soloist at Disney Hall this summer. In addition to these achievements, Honor was recently awarded From the Top’s Learning and Media Lab Fellowship, which gives outstanding young musicians the unique opportunity to share their performances and perspectives with a large national radio and digital audience. His violin performance and interview were featured on NPR’s From the Top broadcast in March. Episode 412

Honor Frisco with Hollywood composer/conductor Mr. Nathan Wang on the set of his LA Opera production “On Gold Mountain”, May 2022

can be listened to at this link: https://fromthetop. org/show/show-412/. Honor is the first performer in this episode and is accompanied on piano with the show’s host. On top of his NPR appearance and his upcoming performances, Honor is currently rehearsing with the LA Opera Orchestra for the production of On Gold Mountain, which will take place in the Chinese Garden at The Huntington in May. Honor was selected to play alongside the LA Opera Orchestra, along with other student musicians, by composer and conductor Mr. Nathan Wang. For more information about the opera, visit https://www.laopera.org/ performances/2122-season-page/on-gold-mountain/. The Frisco family is well acclimated to the musical world now, as Honor’s 13-year-old sister Chloe is a cello player who learned from Stan Sharp. Honor and Chloe Frisco are names to look out for in the piano, violin and cello arenas. Honor would like to thankall his local music teachers that taught him so much and gave him incredible support over the years including: Daniel Doctor, Gail Gerding-Mellert, Dr. Linda Govel, Esther Keel, Joseph Keel, Chauntelle O’Loughlin , Yutong Sharp, Elmer Su, and John Wang.

And the Winners of PV Magazine’s 2022 Photography Contest Are… Congratulations to the winners of our 2022 High School Student Photography Contest. This year our theme was “The Wild Side of the Peninsula.” We asked students to send us photos of wildlife found on the Palos Verdes Peninsula with a brief description about the photo.

First Place, $150 Visa Gift Card: Morning Snack Sydney Iravanchy Peninsula High School, 10th Grade

The Northern Mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos, is known for its intelligence and migration to different parts of the world under extreme climates. This photo was taken near city hall on the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve trail. The photo was difficult to take as the slightest movements had the bird flying away and out of shot, I was lucky enough to catch this photo and later realized that the bird was carrying a seed in its beak.

Second Place, $75 Visa Gift Card: PVP Fence Lizard Matthew Setlich Peninsula High School, 12th Grade

Lizards are everywhere, but have you really looked at them closely? Once I started taking photographs in Palos Verdes, I realized how much detail and texture so many things we see everyday had. Even the smallest creatures express so much character. Next time you go for a walk along the trails, stop and look closely at the little things around you and not just the big picture. Lizards camouflage within their surroundings, yet when spotted leave an impression

Third Place, $50 Visa Gift Card: Curiosity Lauren Eades Palos Verdes High School, 10th Grade

My image depicts the striped shore crab, also known as the Pachygrapsus crassipes, which I found in a tide pool along the coast near Trump Golf Course. This little red and green crab was resting in a small tide pool when he peered out of the water to watch me take his photo. I feel that many automatically think of the peacocks and birds that grace our hill but I wished to capture a major part of our animal population that is often overlooked, the smaller sealife.

RPV 50th: Spotlight on the City’s Hidden Jewels Photo by Erik Jay

Wr i t t e n b y M e l a n i M o ro s e E d e l s t e i n

As Rancho Palos Verdes’s 50th Anniversary Celebration gets set to launch in September, PV Magazine is looking back at some of the city’s lesser-known still impressive hidden enthrallment. Rancho Palos Verdes takes up 13.7 square miles of the Peninsula, from the city’s breathtaking coastline to deep into the canyons. Boasting locations unmatched anywhere else in the United States, it’s not a surprise that RPV is a popular location for many movies and television shows. RPV COASTAL TRAIL Hike the Rancho Palos Verdes Coastal Trail lined with coastal sage and cacti, and you’re walking through history. MTV used the area to film the MTV Beach House. FOX filmed scenes from The O.C in the surrounding area. Dunkirk and Disney films were photographed here. RPV LOCKUP A prison in RPV? It may seem hard to fathom today, especially when looking at all the development on the Peninsula. Still, local lore says there was once a prison where the Peninsula Center now stands, according to 65 year Palos Verdes resident and local realtor Dana Graham, who witnessed it in action. “I’m not sure when it opened, but there was an honor farm until about the mid-’50′s, roughly where Bristol Farms and CVS Drugs are now, and the prisoners worked on the extension of Crenshaw Blvd.” Back before the Portuguese Bend landslide closed the roads, drivers heading up the brand new Silver Spur Road could curve all the way around and up to Crest Road and then make a left and curve down behind the gates to quickly get to Portuguese Bend.

sacred cove RPV is known for hiking trails with breathtaking views of the Pacific. What some people might not know is that the city boasts incredible hidden secret caves and coves. Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is located on a stunning scenic stretch of coast and features a state ecological preserve that protects animals and marine life. It’s also home to the Sacred Cove. This super deep-water cove is hidden between Portuguese Point and Inspiration Point and is not easy to access. A long trail from the parking lot on the bluff provides access to Abalone Cove Beach but to get to Sacred Cove beach, you have to locate one of the two trails along Palos Verdes Drive South, between Inspiration and Portuguese Points, and walk to the end. Visitors who don’t want to hike down the steep cliffside can stop at the top and check views of the other nearby secret coves and caves and watch migrating whales and the magical Pacific Ocean. CITY HALL MISSILE BASE When the city of Rancho Palos Verdes was incorporated in 1972 and officials searched for a City Hall location, the old barracks at the Nike Missile Base became the perfect choice. The two-story buildings that house the city’s offices once served as the military barracks for the surface-to-air missile launch site. The Nike Missile Base, built during the cold war, was intended to shoot down incoming bombers. Once the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM,) a missile primarily designed for nuclear weapons delivery, was developed, the Nike Missile became obsolete along with the bases which once dotted the California coastline.

Incapacity Planning

Contributed by G re go r y B ec ke r

Common reasons new clients seek out my services include distribution of assets to beneficiaries, probate avoidance and maximization of federal estate tax savings. Incapacity planning is often overlooked even though it is an extremely important part of an overall estate plan. Powers of Attorney for Business and Health along with a Living Trust are central components of a plan that addresses incapacity. These documents nominate successors and empower them to handle affairs pursuant to the guidelines set forth in the documents during times of diminishing capacity, temporary incapacity and incapacity. When issues arise relating to real estate, retirement accounts, health care insurance, utility bills and bank accounts, to name a few, the estate plan documents are invaluable. What happens when there is no plan and financial or health issues affect one that is substantially

unable to manage their affairs? Conservatorships through the probate court may be required to obtain powers to manage the affairs of the incapacitated. These proceedings are extremely timeconsuming, expensive and can continue through death. Without the proceedings, the threat of undue influence, fraud and mismanagement becomes more and more prevalent. Most of my clients do not just pass away. As they grow older, their capacity diminishes and management of one’s affairs becomes more and more challenging. The ones that have estate plans are generally in a much better position than those who have not planned properly. With a well thought out plan that includes a living trust, powers of attorney for business & health as well as a review of assets, vesting and beneficiary designations, we can typically avoid major issues that negatively impact those without estate plans.
