lthough the first day of summer officially arrives on June 21st, it feels as though its’ been here for a couple months already. June is a very busy month for families with kids graduating and out of school, planning vacations near and far. We are so lucky to live in one of the most sought after vacation destinations in the entire world and sometimes we don’t even realize it. The Sips You Take This Summer May Be Destroying Your Teeth

Debbie and Larry Lieberman, D.D.S.

T

he beautiful weather we all look forward to is here! It’s a time to dust off the old barbque, enjoy some delicious grill time with family and friends and sip on some cold, thirst quenching soda. Although this image appears heavenly - the soda you are drinking can create a dental nightmare! I have told my patients for years that besides smoking cigarettes, soda (this includes diet soda too) is the worst thing you can do to harm your teeth. For many people, soft drinks are the beverage of choice. But you may not realize

the two-fold damage it is doing to your teeth. First, soft drinks can contain 10-12 teaspoons of sugar per serving. So, when you drink a soda, you are essentially bathing your teeth in liquid sugar. The bacteria that naturally live on your teeth feed on that sugar and produce acid. Without proper care, the acid dissolves the surface of your teeth and creates a cavity. Second, soft drinks- especially diet sodascontain phosphoric and citric acid to enhance flavor. The acids wash over your teeth, affecting the entire tooth structure. Over time , they erode the hard, protective enamel, causing your teeth to get thinner and expose the sensitive dentin layer inside your tooth. As your teeth continue to get thinner, the edges can crumble and lose their natural shape. When the enamel is worn away, it exposes the dentin layer to both decay and pain. Tooth enamel that’s lost to decay or erosion won’t grow back. We can repair the damage, but the best solution is prevention. This is not a problem only for adults. Children and teens who have frequent access to soft

drinks can greatly damage their teeth because their teeth are still forming. Sodas (regular and diet), sports drinks, energy drinks, vitamin waters, fruit juices, teas, blended coffee drinks and wine all contain the sugars that can damage your teeth. A 16-ounce blended coffee drink can contain 500 calories and 69 grams of sugar. Your best choices for a beverage are milk and or course, water. If you must drink soft drinks - use a straw, do not drink for extended periods of time, do not hold the liquid in your mouth before swallowing, cut down on the amount you consume, and after you drink, rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth. The best decision is to choose the very best thirst quencher. Water has no fat, no caffeine and no acid! With smarter choices and regular check-ups, you can protect the health of your teeth for years. I hope you have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Losing Weight the Healthy Way

• Identify Your Destination • Have A Plan For Your Journey

• Identify Resources For Support Along The Way The first step is “identifying your destination,” or weight loss goal, and believing you can achieve it. For many people, the biggest obstacle isn’t genetics or the amount of weight they want to lose. Instead, it’s overcoming their mental state which often says “I have failed before, I will fail this time” or “I don’t deserve to be happy and healthy.” To conquer this self-defeating attitude, arm yourself with daily affirmations. Look in the mirror and repeat 5 times daily, “I want to be healthy. I want to be happy. I want to feel great about myself.” This feeds positive thoughts to your brain, which sets positive actions in motion. As with any journey, there are times when obstacles, detours and challenges may arise. Having a plan helps ensure that you are able to stay on course and reach your destination. The same is true with your journey to living a life of health and happiness. We all know that “life happens” but with a well-constructed plan, you are setting yourself up for success from the beginning. Planning your meals, supplemental nutrition, exercise and even reflection time will help you stay focused and moving towards your weight loss goals. When on a road trip, a GPS, road-side assistance plans, and even emergency respondents are there to help if ever the need for support arises. This is an integral element in your pursuit to be the best you as well. We all face frustration and fear as we reach our most vulnerable moments in our path to a healthier lifestyle. It’s at these moments that our support system is the

most critical and can help us return to our path to a successful lifestyle change. You may find support in your spouse, friends, walking/exercise groups or other social circles. When times get tough, these support systems will provide opportunities for people that care to help you stay focused and motivated. The list below outlines some general tips for helping you lose weight the healthy way: • Eat – Commit to eat at least 3 meals a day with a few snacks in between. Fruits, vegetables and lean proteins help arm your body with the nutrition it needs without adding impurities. • Drink Fluids – Staying hydrated is essential to your health and allowing your body to flush out the toxins as you move towards a healthier lifestyle. Anywhere from ½ gal to 1 gallon of water per day. • Supplement – Even the healthiest meal plan can benefit from supplements. B complex, Magnesium, Potassium, Omega Fats and other vitamins and minerals are all essential to keeping your body in optimal health. • Exercise Regularly – Even if it’s a walk in the evening, regular exercise is a great way to improve your health. Start off slow and work your intensity level up over time to ensure your body adjusts successfully. Your journey to a healthier life will be a challenging one at times. However, with a vision, a belief, a plan and a support system in place you can, and will, achieve your goal to Be The Best You! n

HEALTH

W

e find ourselves being bombarded daily with weight loss companies touting “wonder products” and ridiculously “rapid results.” How are we to know who or what is accurate? This is one of those times that your mother’s “too good to be true” sentiment applies. One thing, however, is always true. There is a healthy and a non-healthy way to lose weight. Crash dieting, “miracle” products which haven’t been tested or proven, and other drastic behaviors which create rapid fluctuations in weight are very damaging to your body and, with repetition, will do more harm than good. From increased insulin resistance, which makes weight loss progressively harder over time, to increased risk of heart disease, the short-term results are severely outweighed by the lasting negative impacts on your health. The initial conversation we have with our patients as they begin their weight loss journey is how to successfully approach their goal through a complete lifestyle change. Once you are consistently making healthier decisions and living life through a series of optimal health behaviors, you will find yourself in a place of balance and well being for many years to come. This gradual and lasting shift will often reverse many of the inflammation related illnesses plaguing so many people today. However, arriving at this new lifestyle is a journey. Much like any journey you would take in life, there are three key areas of focus.

Modern Microderm

In the battle against aging, microdermabrasion is your weapon of choice. BY VALERIE KELLEY

D

id you know that microdermabrasion dates back to ancient Egypt when doctors used sandpaper to scrape the outermost layer of the skin to get rid of unwanted scars and signs of old wounds? If it’s good enough for Cleopatra, it’s good enough for us! Kidding aside, we tend to forget that skin is the largest organ in the human body eliminating almost 10% of the body’s toxins. Unfortunately, the vitamins and nutrients needed to replenish our skin are oftentimes used up by other organs, leaving skin dull, dehydrated, sallow and vulnerable to wrinkles, sun damage, scars and blemishes. In the battle against aging, regular microdermabrasion is key for keeping skin in tip-top shape. Officially developed in Italy, in 1985, microdermabrasion is a quick, safe process which promotes the production of new skin cells in the deepest layer of the dermis by “sandblasting” the top layer of skin. Simple, painless and non-invasive, microdermabrasion is remarkably effective at diminishing fine lines, age spots, wrinkles, acne, shallow skin scars, as well as hyper pigmentation and sun damage. Similar to brushing one’s teeth, microdermabrasion helps remove skin “plaque” and dead skin cells, aiding the penetration of skin care products (creams, serums and medications) by up to 10-50 percent. Patients typically note even makeup goes on more easily after microdermabrasion. There are two primary types of microdermabrasion. Crystal microdermabrasion utilizes a compressor that draws in air through a hand-held wand. When the wand touches the skin, a vacuum is created. Very tiny crystals -like aluminum oxide, sodium chloride or sodium bicarbonate -- blast across the skin’s surface, removing dead skin cells. Diamond microdermabrasion, on

www.PanacheVue.com

the other hand, uses a single, diamondtipped wand rather than a stream of particles, giving it the flexibility to be used near the eyes or around the mouth. The wands are of varied size and coarseness for different skin types and depths of resurfacing, making it a more efficient tool in advanced anti-aging skincare. No matter which method you choose, after one 30 minute treatment, there is a visibly healthy glow and marked improvement in the appearance of fine lines and skin texture. With repeated microdermabrasion treatments, benefits expand to include further wrinkle reduction, increased collagen production and notable repair to sun-damaged skin, acne and resultant scarring, enlarged pores, age spots and pigmentation. Microdermabrasion is most commonly used on the face, but it’s safe for all areas of the body, including back, neck and hands. Best of all, it works well for all skin types and ethnicities. One last note: While microdermabrasion can achieve dramatic results, a great deal is dependent on the expertise of the professional administering the procedure. Be certain your aesthetician is a fully-qualified, licensed professional who has been certified for microdermabrasion. As such, it’s best to follow the recommendations of your aesthetician regarding the number of treatments necessary for optimum results. Skin type and condition is considered in making a determination. And, remember to avoid sun for several days after treatment and protect yourself with sunscreen… your skin will thank you! n Call 813.874.2332 for an appointment or visit www.LecadaTampa. com. Summer

WHITE OUT SHARON MOSLEY

The white sundress is one of summer’s brightest hits. Photo: Corey p at Kohl’s.

O

K, everyone, it’s official. Memorial Day has come and gone, and it’s time to bring on the white, right? And although many fashion experts extol the virtues of wearing white all year long now, it still seems that this basic of “non-colors” just fits more into the summer swing of things. After all, sliding through the dirty snow in white suede boots doesn’t really make sense even to this go-go girl of the ‘60s.

PANACHE VUE’

This summer, white is one of the hottest fashion trends making the rounds at retail. And it’s easy to incorporate it into your wardrobe. It goes with practically anything and any color. Here are a few tips on how to wear white right now: Go graphic. This year, white looks right with the bold punch of black -- this classic combo has long been a favorite, but now it’s gone graphic and mod. In everything from color-blocked sandals to wide striped

handbags to those rockin’ round sunglasses of Korean pop star Psy, black and white just looks right for summer style. Wear it head-to-toe. A white pantsuit can be a modern “go-to” outfit for all sorts of occasions this summer. Mix tailored trousers and jackets with a white ruffled blouse for the office or with a metallic tank for cocktails. Think of this white-onwhite look as an alternative to the black tuxedo. And of course there’s nothing more classic than the crisp white blouse teamed up with a slim black pencil skirt. Mix it up. Combining different shades of white in one outfit can be tricky. There are the bright shades of pure white and then the darker shades of creamier whites. These can be a sophisticated pairing, as a Moto- jacket and pencil skirt, or more casual in off-white linen pants and a white linen tunic. Get dressed. The white dress is another hit this summer, and it’s not just the garden party dress that’s brightening up the fashion landscape. These dresses have detail with a capital “D” -- texture is the key -- sheer panels, lace overlays and cutouts galore (in all the right places, of course)! Knee-length is the way to go! Do denim. White jeans have also become must-haves for summertime style for both men and women. The cropped Capri promises to be a great addition this season, if you don’t already own a pair. And of course, white denim shorts are another “gowith-everything” fashion staple. Add accessories. If wearing white head-to-toe just scares you right out of the line at Starbucks, then there are plenty of white extras available to brighten up your summer wardrobe without adding a dime to your dry-cleaning bill. Again, remember you can wear white with just about everything. So go ahead and invest in these neutral accessories -- an oversized white satchel, white gladiator sandals, white enamel cuff bracelets, even a bold French manicure. Remember, you’ve got until Labor Day! n

HEALTH & FITNESS

WATER FITNESS

BENEFITS

T

he unique properties of water combine to offer one of the most effective environments for an exercise program. Water fitness is the great equalizer – participants of a wide range of skill and fitness levels can enjoy this low-impact, total body conditioning workout. With the addition of high-quality equipment, the benefits of a water workout are endless.

GETTING FIT: TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING

• Studies have shown convincingly that water workouts decrease body fat as effectively as land-based exercise programs. • Without performing a single sit-up, a water workout tones and strengthens the abdominals as a result of maintaining a vertical posture against the water’s resistance. 20

PANACHE VUE’

• Water offers a three-in-one workout for cardiovascular and muscular conditioning and enhanced flexibility. This timeefficient, total body conditioning workout results in increased strength and endurance, and improved biomechanics and balance. • Low-impact aquatic workouts can prevent the injury, strain and re-injury common to many land-based exercise. Water supports 90 percent of the body’s weight – resulting in reduced stress on joints, muscles, tendon and ligaments. • Water is a natural and instantly adjustable weight-training machine. Resistance is approximately four to 42 times greater in water than air. A workout can be as vigorous or light as desired by effectively utilizing the water’s resistance. • Unlike most land activities, water provides resistance in all directions, so both sides of the muscle pair can be strength-

ened simultaneously. For example, an arm curl works both biceps and triceps, since there is resistance to the movement in both directions. • An upright water workout can be more effective than swimming, because the body’s vertical position increases resistance 75 percent over swimming laps. Water Fitness Benefits -- 2

FEELING GOOD: FITNESS FOR A LIFETIME

• A regular water fitness program can result in the permanent reduction of blood pressure. Water’s hydrostatic pressure helps the heart circulate blood, which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise versus similar exertions on land. • Practical daily movements such as walking, lifting and reaching can be incorpo-

• Buoyancy equipment, such as the patented AquaJogger® belt, suspend the body securely and comfortably, supporting the head and neck out of the water, so hair stays dry and glasses can be worn. Water Fitness Benefits -- 3 • Especially beneficial to individuals with disabilities is the fact that water workouts offer a greater range of motion and freedom of movement than many land-based exercise.

rated into a water fitness workout to enhance functionality. This can result in the ability to enjoy and perform the activities of daily life with greater energy and ease. A water workout can be a social activity just like fitness walking or riding side-byside stationary bikes. With access to an indoor pool, water exercise becomes a great year-round activity, as well as a safe workout option during inclement weather. It can also be an affordable alternative to at-home workouts which often involve more expensive equipment. Water exercise is both exhilarating and therapeutic – reducing stress-related symptoms such as high blood pressure and muscle spasms. The water’s full body massage action provides a vigorous yet deeply relaxing workout that is usually pain free. Water exercise involves all muscle groups, yet virtually eliminates muscle soreness – leaving the muscles relaxed instead of

tight and sore.

WATER WALKING: NO SWIM SKILLS REQUIRED

• Water walking and running movements are simple to learn and require no swim skills, making deep water workouts accessible to virtually everyone – from those just beginning a workout program to those looking for a great cross-training option. • Whether in peak condition or recovering from surgery, the water’s forgiving environment supports and offers a light or challenging workout according to the person’s need – for both fragile physical therapy clients and intense athletes. • The water’s buoyancy helps even the uncoordinated land exerciser achieve a measure of grace with movements that are easy to learn. The fact that water obscures less than stellar bodies also makes this exercise appealing to the self-conscious.

• Water exercise demands the continual use of the abdominal and back muscles as well as the arms and legs in order to maintain erect body alignment and balance. This strengthening of the core abdominals and back can assist in managing and preventing back pain. • Water exercise enables a person to preserve as much fitness and function as possible while rehabilitating an injury. Many people heal to over 100 percent of preinjury strength and may actually improve their fitness level. Some individuals who have committed to aquatic therapy found their recovery time is reduced by half. • Heat is lost 25 times faster in water than air, allowing for longer and more comfortable workouts. This natural cooling of the body is particularly beneficial for people who tend to overheat during exercise, and in conditions such as pregnancy or multiple sclerosis, where maintaining a lower core body temperature is very important. • The water’s pressure helps the heart circulate blood which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise. As a result of this hydrostatic pressure, water exercise may be one of the best and safest activities for cardiac patients. It also helps reduce swelling, allowing many people with arthritis or injuries to exercise. n To find a retailer near you visit www.AquaJogger.com or call 1-800-922-9544. be earned income. Things such as interest and dividends from investments, pensions, Social Security benefits, unemployment benefits, alimony and child support -- even though they may factor significantly in your monthly bottom line -- aren’t considered earned income for tax and IRA contribution purposes.

THE SPOUSAL IRA EXCEPTION

Can You Contribute to an IRA

IF YOU DON’T HAVE A JOB? BY CARRIE SCHWAB-POMERANTZ

Dear Carrie, Can you put money in an IRA or a Roth IRA if you don’t have wage income? --A Reader Dear Reader, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) were introduced in the mid’70s to help employees save for retirement and reduce their taxable income. So it stands to reason that to make a contribution -- and get the tax benefit -- you’d have to have income from a job. And, in fact, contributions to both traditional and Roth IRAs can only be made from what the IRS determines to be “earned income.” 22

PANACHE VUE’

However, wages aren’t the only form of earned income. So let’s start by looking at the definition.

WHAT’S CONSIDERED EARNED INCOME

You don’t have to work for someone else to have taxable earned income. You can also work for yourself. Compensation from either type of employment would be considered earned income. But the complete definition is a bit broader. According to the IRS, taxable earned income includes: • Wages, salaries and tips • Union strike benefits • Long-term disability benefits received prior to minimum retirement age • Net earnings from self-employment In terms of an IRA contribution, the amount of your earned income is also important. The maximum contribution you can make for 2011 is $5,000 ($6,000 if you’re over 50). But if your taxable income is less than the maximum contribution, you can only contribute up to the actual dollar amount of your earned income for the year. In other words, you can’t contribute more to your IRA than you earn.

WHAT ABOUT UNEARNED INCOME?

Because there are other ways to make money, it’s probably equally important to understand what’s not considered to

Fortunately for married couples, there is one way to make a contribution to an IRA if you don’t have wages -- a Spousal IRA. This is a tax-advantaged retirement account designed specifically to allow a working spouse to make contributions on behalf of a nonworking spouse. Under current laws, if you’re married filing jointly, you can contribute the maximum into an IRA for each spouse-even if one of you has no earned income -- as long as the working spouse has income equal to both contributions. So let’s say both you and your spouse are over 50 and want to contribute the maximum of $6,000 to each of your IRAs. Whichever one of you is working would have to have earned income of $12,000 or more to cover both contributions. Another good thing about the Spousal IRA is that, should the non-working spouse go back to work, he or she can contribute to the same IRA. That’s because, once opened, a Spousal IRA is an Individual Retirement Account like any other.

MAKING RETIREMENT TOP PRIORITY NO MATTER WHAT

Even if you don’t qualify for the tax advantages of an IRA or other type of retirement account, if you have income from other sources besides wages, I advise you to save for retirement -- and save consistently. Open an investment account or other type of savings account, earmark it for retirement and direct a percentage of your income to that account each month. Ideally, you could set up an automatic transfer from your checking account into your savings account to make it easier on yourself. Then, should your earnings situation change and you find you’re able to contribute to an IRA or participate in an employer-sponsored plan, you’ll be ahead of the game. n

“Beach Entry” Pools

ey Everyone, Zac here with Ultra Custom Group. Tampa’s Premier resource for Home, Pool and Outdoor Living. My good friends over a Panache Vie’ Magazine have asked me to talk to you a little about “Beach Entry” Pools. Beach entries are a must have for any resort or lagoon style pool. They offer a seemingly natural entry in to the pool and offer strong esthetic value. Beach entries are a safe and fun area for children and toddlers to play. I often like to change the surface colors in this area to further accent the space. How about multiple beach entries? Using a “Sport Pool” format with the deep end in the middle of the pool you can create an authentic lagoon out of any free form pool with entry’s and exits on both side of the pool. Using natural rock along the descending wall you can amplify the ascetics.

Let’s talk about the total foot print of the pool. A beach entry is a great way to increase the total footprint of the pool without adding a lot of costs. Because it is a shallow body of water, it should be priced at much less of a square footage price, so you can add a 100square feet of beach entry to your pool for a fractional amount compared to 100sq of true pool. From above, the body of water with looks much larger making the pool seem larger. Let’s put a couple lounge chairs in yours. Ultra Custom Pool Designs have been building beautiful residential pools in the Bay Area for 10 years; let’s get started on your design today. in High Point, N.C., the largest home furnishings market on earth. Think of l0.5 million square feet of show space in 180 different buildings, where 2,000 manufacturers show their creations to some 80,000 buyers, designers and tastemakers who come from 110 countries twice a year. That’s a lot of looking. But amazingly enough, it is possible to sift through the huge market and come home with a fix on trends in colors and styles, who and what is new and hot for tomorrow’s interiors. Here’s what we learned from four days of hard looking and three journals filled with notes: --Aqua is back. Never mind that Emer-

ald Green is Pantone’s Color of the Year; the color of the Spring Market is aqua by any name -- turquoise or teal, robin’s egg blue or even sea foam if you prefer. In fact, blues of all hues were all over the market “for the first time in years,” according to Charlie Coffey, VP of Sales at Sherrill Furniture. Blue fell off the Color Preference charts nearly a dozen years ago, Coffey said, but it will make quite a splash this fall and beyond, once furniture shown at this spring’s market arrives on dealers’ floors. Also new -- and into blue -- is Aerin Lauder’s debut on the home decorating scene (aerin.com). Granddaughter of the cosmetics doyenne and dedicated to the idea that “every woman (and every thing) can be beautiful,” Aerin’s spring collection was all about the blues, soft periwinkle, hydrangea and aqua, always touched with gold (“Gold is a neutral,” she proclaims). --Animal skins are still in, and climbing even further up the pop charts. Wherever we looked at the market, it was a jungle in there. Animal patterns were everywhere, from the leopard, zebra and tortoise Aerin Lauder previewed for her coming fall collections to the floor lamp John-Richard (johnricard.com) covered in zebra-striped suede. Designers loved hair-on hides, the shaggier the chic-er. Brazilian cowhide with leopard spots covered Pacific Green’s “Kiribati” chair, held with leather ties following the construction method used by people indigenous to Fiji, where the award-winning Australian company (pacificgreen.net) sources its palmwood. Furniture Your Way (furnitureyourway.com) wrapped its large klismos-style club chair in hair-on-hide and lined it in croc-embossed leather. Along with their tres chic classics, French Heritage (frenchheritage.com) offered a to-die armchair in “zebra” hide and a standing bar-in-a-trunk with a mega-croc finish. --Nailheads. Yes, they’ve been used to decorate upholstered furniture for centuries, but now nailhead decorations are showing up on case pieces like chests and desks, too. But forget brass: at this market, it was shiny studs in brushed nickel that added special sparkle to many new pieces. n

r. Dex Alvarez is proud to be able to change lives every day as a Chiropractic Physician. He’s a corrective care doctor who diagnosis and corrects issues involving the spine and central nervous system, and in turn, affects the overall health of each patient that walks into Palma Ceia Chiropractic and Wellness Center for the better. The new south Tampa location opened its’ doors on May 6th with Dex and his staff eagerly waiting to change and transform the way our community views and manages their healthcare. Dex has always known he wanted to be in the health care profession to some degree, even as a kid. When he was young he had horrible struggles with asthma and allergies. “Whenever I ran or played sports, my inhaler was my best friend, and to manage my allergies I needed an allergy shot twice a week. Over the years Dr. Adler, my pediatrician, and I saw a lot of each other, and during that time I realized I wanted to help people as much as he was helping me.” So after graduating from Jesuit in Tampa, he pursued a Biological Science degree from Florida State University, with a concentration in premed/pre-dentistry. Four years at FSU flew by, and when he completed his degree he applied to dental schools. “I was there, I almost signed on the dotted line to start up in New York, but something told me that Dentistry, though an awesome profession wasn’t for me. I came back home, racked my mind on what to do, shadowed doctors in the Tampa area, and was still lost as what to do next. Then it hit me; other than Dr. Adler, the only other doctor that really helped me was my cousin Dr. Kevin Valdez, a chiropractor in Brandon, FL. I was a wrestler throughout high school and for a semester at FSU, he was the only reason I was able to walk after my 2 hour practices. After a day of shadowing my cousin, and seeing how he changed

hat is the best inshore game fish to catch locally? Many will argue that it is the tarpon, the powerful silver king. Their argument is sound. The fish are large…up to 200 lbs. They can be sighted and cast to in shallow water, caught on light tackle and fly fishing gear and may jump repeatedly reaching heights as high as ten feet out of the water. The battle can be long and grueling, lasting over an hour. There is another candidate for top inshore game fish however….the snook. As snook generally locate close to shore, they are reachable by all anglers, including those with no watercraft. During the months of summer, snook gather along our local beaches and passes in spawning aggregations that may number in excess of fifty fish. The locations that these fish appear in each year are fairly predictable. Determining when they will feed is not. Certainly the best times to tempt these fish are during low light periods at each end of the day or on strong tidal movement. Some groups of fish may bite first thing in the morning, regardless of tide. Others may eat anything in sight on the outgoing tide, but show no interest in eating on the incoming tide. So www.PanacheVue.com

OUTDOOR SPORTS

Summer Snook Fishing

what’s the trick to knowing when they will bite? By fishing different groups of fish at different points in the tide early in the season, patterns will emerge. This group bites before 9AM, this group bites two hours before the high tide etc… Being able to arrive on a group of snook at a time when they have eaten before is a huge advantage and the likelihood of getting them to bite is greatly enhanced. The reality of snook fishing is that the difference between a good day and a bad day is usually a fifteen minute feeding period. It is not uncommon to fish to a group of fish for a half hour and get no bites and then, as if someone threw the magic switch, three big fish are hooked in the next fifteen minutes…and then the action stops dead. A great snook fishing day comes along when either one group of fish goes off for an extended period, say 45 minutes to an hour, or an angler is lucky enough to get on two different bites and hook ten or twelve fish. Unlike trout and redfish, there is definite technique and skill involved in hooking snook. Baits are typically rigged unweighted or free lined, so as to appear to swim in a totally natural way. As many areas where snook are found have current, baits are cast up current. The angler then retrieves only enough line to pick up the slack as the bait is brought back. As the bait passes the boat, line is mended out so that the bait continues to drift along naturally without being dragged. Once drag in not able to be prevented, the bait is retrieved and the process is repeated again. When fishing calmer areas, baits should be cast out and allowed to swim freely. If the bait pulls away from the boat, again line should

be mended out so that the bait’s movement is unaffected. Once the bait stops, the angler will want to retrieve any excess line so as to be aware of where the bait is and then again open the bail in anticipation of the bait swimming off again or, even better, a big snook eating the bait. If the fish eats the bait, one of two things will happens. If it feels the hook, it will immediately run. This will, or course, be obvious to the angler. If the bail is closed, a drag screaming run will begin. If it is open, the angler can calmly let the fish take line for a few seconds and then click the bail over, at which point the hook will set up in the fish’s mouth and a strong run will start. The other bite is the “tick”. What typically happens here is that the bait will start swimming and then there will be a distinct thump on the line. Then everything will stop. The snook has eaten the bait and is happily sinking back down to the bottom to enjoy its meal, unaware that there is a hook embedded in its dinner. If the angler is fishing with an open bail (recommended), this happens quite often. Again, allowing the fish a few seconds to turn the bait, the angler then reels down and the fun begins. If the angler is fishing closed bail, there is always the danger that the fish hits the bait, feels resistance and immediately runs and the hook pulls free because the fish did not have ample time to turn and swallow the bait. Feeling the “tick’ is an art form as the bite is very subtle...something not expected from large fish. Occasionally, anglers have been told to reel up…only to ignite a long run by a large snook who was sitting on the bottom enjoying its dinner. The best opportunity to hook quality snook is generally from late April through mid July in Northern Pinellas County. If you have an interest in doing so, simply contact Captain Stewart Ames at Gone Fishing Charters. n Captain Stewart Ames Gone Fishing Charters (727) 421-5291 www.Tampa-Fishing-Charter.com

GREEN LIVING

What does

GREEN MEAN TO YOU?

I

BY GENE MCDONALD “THE COUNTERTOP ROCK STAR”

think it has so many meanings, many might get confused trying to pin it down to a definition. When I am looking for a green product, it has got to be a better product; it has to be a healthier product, not just a product with a picture of a leaf on it. And get this it might not even be Recycled. Many think being recycled is the only procedure that makes a product ‘GREEN”. No, no, no!! Keep in mind recycled formaldehyde and

32

recycled pesticides are still formaldehyde and pesticides. The FIRST thing I look for in a green product will focus on the indoor air quality benefits it has. Green should be connected to the term healthy. Many of us eat healthy, work out, have the best air filters in our Air conditioned homes and yet we buy the cheapest toxic off gassing furniture in town because it looks good. Many of us Floridians may open our windows only twice a year. It’s either Hot outside or cool inside, seldom do we say, Lets open the windows and let the FRESH air in. Our tightly sealed homes are basically turning into a subtle gas chamber. If it smells bad, we spray Air freshener, and then we even spray it in our cars. Ahhh, that new car smell fragrance... Did you ever read the toxins in that new car or Pine Forest air freshener? Hmmm why don’t we look at kitchen cabinets, countertops and furniture we put in our home as if it was a box of cereal where we all look at the ingredients on the side of the box? In the future, those same types of labels may be

on your next set of cabinets or that bamboo bedroom set. The SECOND thing I do look for is then “recycled” which has so many word games on labels, you may get confused with that. Post consumer is the best. It means it is made from consumer used products like beer and soda bottles, paper, etc. This then means it provides many jobs that actually divert waste from the landfill. People then have to do curbside recycling, work at the recycling plant sorting out materials, reprocessing into this new exciting product, and many more social aspects. Do you know when people tell me they threw that bottle away, I always poke fun at them and say ‘Where is away? Is it in New Jersey? Is it Tampa Bay? Where is this place called ‘AWAY”? The point I am trying to make is there is no ‘Away! It’s out of sight out of mind, our lifestyle basically says if I can’t see it must be gone. We should be thankful people are coming up with ways to reuse and recycle this waste into new products. We may have to pay more of a premium

for these new innovative products. Now that you’re a little more educated as to wondering why Recycled products may cost more than virgin made products. People always snicker at why recycled glass countertops cost more than granite. Now you, the readers of Panache Vue are informed as to what it takes and how many lives are working and smiling because you purchased a recycled Green product. With granite all you have to do is slice a slab off the side of a mountain, and basically it’s ready for fabrication. With recycled glass concrete and recycled paper countertops, the glass and paper has to be sanitized, grounded, color sorted, then mixed into the concrete or cashew oil resin, molded then ready for fabrication. Post-industrial or now they call it pre-consumer is still recycled but it’s the scraps at a manufacturing plant of products that doesn’t get into the consumers hands yet. In Green Certified Home building, Post-Consumer gives you a higher point rating than Pre-Consumer. Imagine all the people picking up trash, www.PanacheVue.com

cleaning, sorting, mixing, and shipping to fabrication. Think how many families were able to put dinner on the table because you purchased a green Recycled product? Think about the money you may save and the health benefits of not breathing in toxic odorless fumes. That’s just the social benefit, the product also has to be healthy, sanitary and durable that’s built to last. This brings me to my last and THIRD

thing I look for in a green product. It has to look good. I always feel design has to be sustainable as well. For example you may know every single element and aspect of green products and feel great breathing in your home for years. But what if you sell your home, does your kitchen look good, or does it look bland and boring, Is that Coconut Palm kitchen cabinetry with amber glass countertops appealing to many and will it be in style still in the next 5 years. Or else the next person may rip it out and throw it into a landfill. I always wonder why people don’t picture what their kitchen will look like in 5 years, if it’s close to being dated now, Can you picture your mindset in 5 more years so take the plunge now and do it right, so later you won’t have to start to remodel your kitchen or bath process all over again. Cheap is really expensive. If the product is falling apart over a period of time and you have to keep replacing it, to me that is expensive and a waste of time. Here at Panache Vue we share the good news on better, healthier products and business owners so your lifestyle can be lived to the fullest. Green is just common sense blown up real big into a buzzword; it’s up to you to decide how you want to live your life. n Gene McDonald Gene McDonald, aka “The Counter Top Rock Star” is the President of Refresh Interiors Design.com. TAKE THE PLUNGE: Swimwear Trends 2013

T

BY SHARON MOSLEY

ime to dive into the surf with a new wave of swimsuits hitting the beach nearest you. What? Are those moans and groans I hear? While it is true that the search for the perfect swimsuit may not be one of

34

PANACHE VUE’

the most pleasant things most of us do this time of year, we can still breathe a big sigh of relief when we finally do find that perfect string bikini ... or yes, even that classic black one-piece. But there are lots of swimwear options floating around out there this summer. So treat yourself to a spray tan, pedicure and some flip-flop at the mall. Time to dive in. Here are some of the best swimwear trends you’ll see in the stores and online: The Retro Rewind -- This is the biggest news in swimwear that harks back to the glamorous pin-up stars of the ‘40s and ‘50s with boy-short bikinis and shirred one-shoulder maillots. The banded halter with wider straps is also making a comeback. The good news this year? You can

actually swim in these bathing beauties. The Vintage Vantage -- Even if the swimsuit you like doesn’t shape up to all the movie-star drama, you can still get some vintage flair with the prints and patterns you choose. Swimwear designers are mad for retro plaids, tropical florals and picnic ginghams. Paisley scarf prints and lacy crochets also make a big splash this season. Block it with Color -- Brighten up your wardrobe for the poolside this summer with a stark modern take on vivid colors -- from neons to pastels -- juxtaposed in graphic patterns. Lemon yellow is a sunny favorite. The black and white color blocked suits are another way to put some edge into your swim attire. The Bandeau Bikini -- If you feel a little “exposed” in a string bikini but love the look of a two-piece, this suit may be the one for you, especially if you have a bigger bust that will support the “nostrap” top. Just watch those dives from the high board. Go for some ruffles if you are smaller on top. Take the Plunge -- Another way to heat up the pool party -- a swimsuit with a plunging neckline. This silhouette obviously works best for those of us with smaller bust lines, but this is a sexy suit that you wear at your own risk! By the way, the white one-piece is one of the favorite styles taking the plunge this summer. Cut it Out -- Whether it’s a suit with sliced-out panels on the side, the neckline or the midriff, suits with cut-outs are one of the most popular ways to show a little skin at the beach this summer. For those who may not like to bare quite so much, check out the suits with sheer inserts in all the right places. Animal Instincts -- Go ahead and get a little wild. Keep your eye out for leopard printed bikinis, zebra-printed maillots or python foil-printed boy shorts. Copper metallic suits are the shining stars. Going on a beach safari has never been this much fun! Covering Up -- To some of us, the beach cover-up may be even more important than the swimsuit itself! There are so many ways to do this -- from sheer colorful shirts to oversized sarong scarves. This summer, the maxi sundress is a real winner for fun in (and out) of the sun. n

On a balmy night in May, the Hilton Tampa Downtown was transformed into a James Bond playroom; a glittery room filled with glamorous guests dressed in jewels, tuxedos and sophistication. It would have turned the heads of even Roger Moore himself. Close to 450 guests sipped on martinis, danced to the music of the Bay Kings band, played Casino www.PanacheVue.com

Royale games and posed for photos next to new and vintage Aston Martins. Over $260,000 was raised by the Tampa General Hospital Foundation for its Fund for the Future at the 16th annual Moments in Time Gala: “Licensed to Thrill”. TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

A visit to New Zealand’s Waitomo Glowworm Caves begins and ends at the visitors center. Photo courtesy of Steve Murray.

Under the Land of

THE HOBBITS BY STEVE MURRAY

S

erenity fills the air around Waitomo. The winding roads into this town on the north island of New Zealand run through thick forests, rolling hills and deep green pastures, and the drive sets a fitting mood for a visit to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. This is Hobbit country. Director Peter Jackson filmed the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy nearby, and he chose his ageless settings well. Three hours by car or bus from Auckland or two hours from Roturua, the glowworm caves offer a special encounter with the unique creatures that live beneath this lush countryside. Waitomo sits atop a deep bed of limestone -- fossilized coral, shells and other marine life deposited over eons when the region was still under the sea. When the land rose about 30 million years ago, cracks in the limestone provided paths for flowing water and erosion that created the caves and underground rivers found today.

The local Maoris likely knew about the Waitomo caves for centuries. Named for their geology -- “wai” (water) and “tomo” (hole or chute) in the Maori language -- the caves weren’t explored systematically until 1887, when a Maori chief and an English surveyor set out by raft down an underground river. Opened in 1889, the glowworm caves were one of the earliest tourist attractions in New Zealand. The high entrance to the caves is reached after a walk on a short trail through dense tawa trees and nikau palms that block out much of the sunlight. Once inside, the tour guide navigates visitors along a descending trail through chambers of bleached yellow and brown limestone, decorated everywhere with hanging stalactites and tall stalagmites. These columns were formed over millennia by the mineral deposits left from slowly dripping water. It takes about 100 years to deposit 1 cubic centimeter of these

columns, so a little math illustrates the incredible age of these caves since the time that this ground rose from the sea. Early tourists stopped to eat in what is today known as the Banquet Chamber, and soot from their fires can be seen on its ceiling. Farther down is the largest cave, the Cathedral. A natural amphitheater with exceptional acoustics, the Cathedral has been used for musical performances by the Vienna Boys Choir and New Zealand’s own Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, among others. The levels of these caves are linked vertically by the Tomo, a 52-foot shaft marking the course of an ancient waterfall. A still underground river marks the end of the cave path, where visitors board aluminum boats. Once the tour pushes off, everyone gets quiet. Even the guide talks in hushed tones, pushing a single paddle to move through the black water. While spotlights showcase the warm colors of

delicate animals, however, has kept the glowworm colonies viable for more than a century of visitation. Driving on from Waitomo again offers time to soak in the pastoral countryside and appreciate the rural beauty of this part of New Zealand. While the drive may be familiar by now, however, it’s difficult to think about the country in the same way, knowing about the hidden abodes that lie underneath its green fields and forests.

WHEN YOU GO

the caves, the boats drift in darkness as the glowworms showcase themselves. Glowworms aren’t actually worms. The species arachnocampa luminosa is part of the gnat family and, like much of the life on these islands, is unique to New Zealand. Adults are about the size of a mosquito (their favorite food). In the larval stage, each animal lets down dozens of mucuscovered threads and emits a bioluminescent glow from its abdomen to lure insects into these hanging snares. The glow comes from the same chemical reaction employed by fireflies, involving the aptly named compound luciferin and oxygen. In the inkblack cave, the result is a biological Milky Way of stars. The lack of ambient light removes any useful depth perception. These dim constellations could be a few feet away or as far as the night sky -- probably what a spacewalk feels like. It’s easy to forget that there’s www.PanacheVue.com

hard earth above this panorama of lights, and some theorize that mosquitoes enter the sticky threads because they think they’re heading out into the air and to freedom. Mottled hints of cave ceiling are the first indication that the boats are reaching the end of the journey. Forest plants shroud much of the lower cave exit, which slows the transition back to surface light. This exit was actually the original entry point when the cave system was first explored. A short trail walk to the visitors center completes the experience, all within less than an hour. The glowworm ecosystem is fragile. Environmental monitors placed throughout the caves measure carbon dioxide, humidity and temperature, and some areas can be closed to visitors if conditions become too extreme. Smoking and photography aren’t allowed in the caves, so visitors leave with only memories of their underground journey. The attention and care for these

Although the Waitomo region contains about 300 known caves and tour operators provide access to several of them, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and the nearby Ruakuri and Aranui caves are the largest and most-visited. Ruakuri contains many limestone formations, and glowworms can be seen close-up during a two-hour walking tour. Its original entrance was used as a Maori burial site and is still considered sacred. Ruakuri is wheelchair-accessible. Aranui, a dry cave, is located nearby in the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve. Without water, Aranui doesn’t have glowworms, but it does provide a home for the New Zealand cave weta, a large, long-legged insect, just inside its entrance. Many tours combine one or more of these caves into longer experiences, and a variety of tour operators offer rappelling, river tubing and rafting, and zip-lining for the more adventurous. Single-day bus tour packages are available from Auckland or Rotorua that include a stop in Waitomo. Some itineraries include additional stops at other attractions but might feel rushed for a same-day return. Prices, including transportation and admission to attractions, range from about $160 to $210; children under 15 are approximately half-price. New Zealand attractions, including the caves, are busiest during December and January. If you have a choice, it’s best to visit the caves in mid to late afternoon when crowds are smaller. n A good place to start trip planning is www. waitomo.org.nz/attractions.asp. Specifics about the Waitomo Caves can be found at www.waitomocaves.com. See an introductory video about the caves at www.waitomo.com/glowwormvideo.aspx. PANACHE VUE’
