DO YOU REALLY NEED BACK OR NECK SURGERY? US Patients Paying Astronomical Costs for Unwarranted Back and Neck Surgeries

M

ore than 465,000 spinal fusions were performed in the United States in 2011. It is estimated that patients spent over $200 million on those surgeries. The United States leads the world in spinal surgeries and fusions. In fact, on average the United States performs up to 4 times more back and neck surgeries than any other nation. BUT DID All Of These Patients Really Need Surgery?!?! As a chiropractor in the Tampa Bay area for more than 14 years, Dr. Carl Conforti, D.C. and his team of doctors have been fighting to reduce those numbers and provide a safe, surgery free options for patients who truly want to be well.

LET ME SHARE A STORY:

Unfortunately, we have patients that walk into our offices every day with stories of failed neck and back surgeries. Some come in with stories of years of struggle, some with recent trauma from a motor vehicle accident, but they all have one thing in common. They want relief from the pain that prevents them from living their lives and they do not want to have to go under the knife, or take harmful shots and pills to mask the pain. After consulting with various doctors and reviewing his treatment options, one of our most successful patients told us that a spinal surgeon told him after he questioned the finality of surgery that spinal decompression “couldn’t hurt, DRX9000

Dr. Carl Conforti, D.C. Dr. Todd Bodanza, D.C. & Dr. Damien Rogers, D.C. but more than likely wouldn’t help.” In fact, the surgeon told this patient that he wished him luck and would see him in a few months for surgery. Well He Was Wrong! Luckily our patient took charge of his own health and continued researching our spinal decompression with the DRX9000. The DRX9000 that we have in our offices is used to treat neck and back pain caused by disc problems. Our patient came into my office, we completely reviews his MRI’s, x-rays, and medical history and determined that not only did he qualify, but he was the perfect candidate for the spinal decompression treatment. At the end of his plan, he was completely pain free for the first time in 15 years. And He Didn’t Have To Take A Hand Full Of Pills With Every Meal!

SO NOW YOU ARE WONDERING, HOW DO I KNOW IF I WOULD BE A GREAT CANDIDATE FOR YOUR TREATMENT?! WELL, TYPICALLY WE TREAT PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCE THE FOLLOWING: • • • • • • •

Back pain due to sciatica Sleepless nights Back or neck injury as the result of an accident Back or leg pain when seated Numbness in your hands or toes Herniated and bulging discs Toothache like pain that goes down your leg or in one of your buttocks • Relapse of neck or back pain following surgery • Spinal stenosis

LET’ SEE WHAT OUR PATIENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT OUR TREATMENTS!

“I went to Conforti Chiropractic Centers and met with Dr Conforti and Dr Bodanza. They recommended spinal decompression. At the time I could barely walk and after the second visit I was pain free and was able to do normal activities. The care and professionalism exhibited by these Doctors was amazing. I was a doubter but I would recommend this to any person suffering from back pain.” Terry O. – Trinity, FL

“Spinal decompression saved me from another back surgery. I suffered through my first surgery and recovery only to find myself back in severe pain within a year. After my relaxing treatments in the Benttree Clinic, I no longer have pain, and I did not even have to suffer to get pain free. In fact, after most of my treatments, the staff would have to wake me because they create such a relaxing setting. Check it out, Dr. Rogers has something special going here.” –Tim S. – Tampa, FL

NOW IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO WRITE A SUCCESS STORY OF YOUR OWN!!

The DRX9000 is a very specific technology that uses your spinal condition, your current body weight, and precise angles and measurements to customize the treatment for each patient. We believe that every person that suffers from back pain, neck pain, spinal stenosis, sleepless nights, and numbness in the extremities deserves the opportunity to learn as much as they can about the treatment alternatives to painful surgeries. My team and I want the opportunity to review your current condition and provide you with the knowledge that the surgeons do not want you to know about. We will provide you with a consult, exam, and x-rays (if necessary), and provide you with the knowledge that will ultimately change your life forever.

COMPLIMENTARY CONSULTATION AND CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT (A $295 VALUE)

In this consultation you will receive a consultation, exam, and x-rays (if necessary). Dr. Conforti and his team of doctors will explain their recommendations for your treatment plan and their plan to eliminate your pain, burning, restlessness, and altered nerve function! Call the office nearest you today to schedule your consultation. Offer expires 4/15/2014 THE PATIENT & ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS A RIGHT TO REFUSE PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR ANY PAYMENT OR ANY OTHER SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE FREE, DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE, SERVICE, EXAMINATION OR TREATMENT.

ast month on February 20th, I was honored to attend the 9th Annual WEDU “Be More Awards” held at the A La Carte Pavilion in Tampa. WEDU, west central Florida’s leading PBS television station recognized more than 100 non-profit organizations and individuals in the area who applied for honors and recognition. This was a very special honor for me because I was also one of the judges for the second year, one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I wanted everyone to WIN! It was a full house with over 500 guests who all have one common denominator, the people of Tampa Bay love to give back and help one another, the spirit and goodwill of our communities is overwhelming! To be in the presence of so many good and giving people is the best part of my job! Congratulations again to all those that won, all that were honored and all of the finalists. Keep doing what you’re doing! Dr. Larry Lieberman is featured in this issue on our cover and on pages10-13. HOW WILL YOU PAINT YOUR SPRING CANVAS?

A

lthough the calendar hasn’t officially turned to spring, the Florida sun is definitely sending its warmth and beauty to us, as a reminder that the season of renewal is upon us. There’s something about that first warm weekend that makes us want to clean and organize, get out the paint brushes, and think about planting spring flowers. Personally, I spent this past beautiful weekend cleaning the winter off of my patio and my lawn furniture, scrubbing the grille and then enjoying a nice barbeque with family and friends. Everything looked fresh and clean; and we could just enjoy the smell of food cooking and the beautiful blue sky as we celebrated together. As it turned dark, even the stars seemed to shine brighter, as if they, too, had been “spring cleaned”. What a lot we have to be thankful for every day! Nutritionally, spring is a good time to review some of those bad habits that carry over from holidays. Maybe there are still crackers and bags of processed snacks foods in your pantry, along with the dips in the refrigerator that have become easy to grab for a snack. Our sweet tooth may have reared its ugly head as we have munched our way through cookies, candies and various confectionaries during the season. Time for pantry renewal! Replace all the processed food (the ones that last for years, and we do not know what is in them), with food from the earth. Try to purchase less bags and cans, and spend more time at the produce stand. In Florida, the

www.PanacheVue.com

spring warmth gives us excellent strawberries and blueberries to satisfy any sweet tooth. Get some fresh vegetables and baste with a little olive oil, and cook on your grill. No mess in the kitchen and a healthy, delicious alternative to canned, sodium packed veggies. Moving to your clothes closet, you decide to put away winter clothes and bring out the lighter weight fabrics. As you try them on, you realize that the winter season has not been kind to your body. That food that was in your pantry has moved to your belly and hips! Don’t be discouraged and don’t spend time chastising yourself. Take a look in the mirror and see the beautiful person you are – just as you are. Appreciate you, the you that puts everyone else in the family ahead of your own needs, the you that works hard to organize a busy household, and the you that carries the hearts of your family with you every day. In accepting yourself the way you are right now, you have given yourself the ability to move forward in a new direction. You have a new blank canvas waiting for you to paint what you want. If it’s better health and some weight loss, then begin fresh for spring. No thoughts about past failures allowed on your blank canvas. Instead, paint your picture the way you will look in your favorite spring outfit – the one that makes you feel happy and joyful. Then commit to change and put together an action plan. Hang up your favorite outfit somewhere where you will see it and it will inspire you to fit in it again. Put a picture of yourself wearing it on your bathroom mirror. You fit in it before and you will again! Now for the dietary changes that will give you the outcome you want. Paint your canvas with three meals a day that include protein. Don’t skip breakfast, and eat within an hour of waking. It’s important to start your day with protein. A couple of eggs and some cheese is a good start to the day. Lunch and dinner should

each include protein and veggies. Vegetables contain good carbs that will give you energy. Have a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack that contain protein; for example, a cheese stick or some turkey jerky. Consider a protein snack before bed as well, as that will keep you from being hungry during the night and most importantly, encourage your body to burn calories while you sleep. If you like fruit, try to stay with berries. Bananas, watermelon and citrus are high in sugar and cause the insulin surge in the bloodstream, which is not what you want when you are trying to lose a few pounds. Now, paint yourself enjoying the beautiful weather. Picture a bike ride, a walk through your neighborhood, or playing pitch and catch with the kids – enjoying all that this beautiful season has to offer. Not only do you get some exercise and have fun, you can absorb some Vitamin D from the sun. Vitamin D works with your thyroid hormone in your body, and some time in the sun will give your body a healthy boost! Even more importantly, take time to breathe in the fresh air. As you take in a deep, cleansing breath, you find that many of life’s stressors seem to lessen. Your shoulders will relax and the tension will ease from your body. Feel the warmth, smell the air and take time to look around you and think of all we have to say “thank you” for. Now look at your painted canvas, the picture of what you want, and soon you will see that in an actual photograph

GIVING

BACK MORE THAN HE GETS

P

anache: When and why did you decide to become a dentist? Larry: I always wanted to be in the health care field and help people. When I was in high school I thought dentistry would be perfect. It was a combination of science, art and psychology. I loved the idea that a healthy smile could transform a personality and improve a person’s life both physically and mentally.

Larry: Our office is totally patient centered - from the doctor (myself) who cares so much about the patient, the staff and people in general to the memory foam we designed for every chair. We do everything possible to give people a great experience and deliver the highest level of care. We educate the patient by showing them what’s going on in their mouth by using cameras and models. And give options to help them make good decisions that fit their lives.

Panache: What one memory stands out to you the most early on in your career and one more recently? Larry: When I first moved to the Tampa Bay area from New York 30 yrs. ago I remember the first patient I treated. John was a dental phobic who needed a root canal and a crown on his front tooth. We took our time and helped him to overcome his fears. When I placed the crown it blended perfectly with his smile. He smiled broadly and said “I feel like the lion that just had the thorn taken out of his foot”.

Panache: Are you involved with any charities and do you do any non-profit work to give back? Larry: Five years ago I was a co-founder of the Gulf Coast Dental Outreach Clinic. Under the leadership of my friend, Rob Ettelman, DDS-who had to retire prematurely, we have helped build a model to help people who can’t afford to help themselves. In the last 5 yrs. with the help of over 100 local volunteer dentists we have produced over $1.5 million in dentistry. This clinic has become a model for access to care around the state. As next year’s president of the dental society, I am so proud to be a part of an organization that gives back so much. Make sure your dentist volunteers- we can always use the help.

Panache: What do you do to keep up with the latest in dental technology and trends? Larry: Our office is a leader in state of the art technology. “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it”. I’ve always believed in trying to incorporate any new technology that I would want as a patient. Over 10 years ago I invested in several dental lasers. I was one of the first dentists on the west coast of Florida to have the Periolase laser to help treat gum disease. In that time I’ve saved many teeth that would have been labeled hopeless. Lasers can cut teeth painlessly; many times without novacaine.Surgery can be done with little to no bleeding. We have a cerec machine

12

PANACHE VUE’

that can make crowns in one day. Recently we added a 3 D Conebeam X-ray machine. Although we have these and many other high tech pieces of equipment the most important aspect of our practice is that we have a truly caring and expert team of dental professionals. Panache: What are your personal and professional mottos and how do you apply them to life and business? Larry: I’ve always believed that I wanted to treat others as I would want to be treated. Always think what I would I do if you were my wife, mother or child. I also believe in having a balance in my life between work, play, family and reli-

gion. When my life is out of balance which can easily happen, my amazing wife of 33 years, Debbie has a knack of helping me get it back in balance. Panache: For those who do not see a dentist regularly, what would be the most important piece of advice you would give them? Larry: Many people do not go to the dentist regularly. Many times you can trace it to time, fear and or money. You are better off going early than when you have a problem. A simple filling or cleaning can turn into something much more involved and more costly. Many things can be given to help with fear, including laughing gas,

oral and IV sedation. We offer all of these options. Many physical and emotional problems can result from poor oral health including heart & lung disease and depression. You owe it to yourself and your family to go to the dentist. Panache: You are considered to be one of the most successful dentists in Tampa Bay. What do you contribute your success to? Larry: We have a great team of dental professionals. They have been with me for many years. Our clinical and non-clinical employees are the best I know of. We hire people who are most importantly nice and also clinically excellent. We are all willing www.PanacheVue.com

to learn and want to become even better. I’ve taken thousands of hours of CE-constantly taking and giving courses all over the country. This helps keep us current and highly motivated. Panache: Any new changes in your practice that you would like to share with our readers? Larry: We are always updating our practice. Our building has recently been renovated and we have the most current technology available. Our most recent acquisition the 3D Conebeam can image the whole mouth, teeth, jaw joints, sinuses and more. We can diagnose disease faster and can virtually place dental implants. This

can give us much needed information to improve the predictability and comfort in the dental implant experience. Panache: What would you like to be remembered for most? Larry: I’d most like to be remembered for being a great father, husband, son and friend. In dentistry I’d like to help leave the dental society a better organization, that works together to help the people in our community. I’d like my patients to feel that they were fortunate to have found our office and that we made a positive impact on their health and wellbeing. I’d like people to say, “the world is a little better that he was here and he gave back more than he got”. PANACHE VUE’

THERE’S NO PARTY WITHOUT ARTIE

Debbie & Larry Lieberman, D.D.S.

I

write this month’s article from the heart and about the heart. Just recently my older and very gregarious brother passed away. Artie was the life of the party, a father of 3 and just 59 years old! He loved life and lived it large. His rose colored glasses never saw this end coming. Over the years I encouraged him to take care of his teeth , his health and please stop smoking. Like so many he knew the obvious effects of smoking on his health but I don’t think he truly appreciated the effect his dental health had on his heart and overall health.

I’ve written about the heart and mouth connection before but feel it is so important – even life saving . According to the Center for Disease Control heart disease is the #1 killer in America. Did you know that heart disease and oral health are linked? People with moderate or advanced gum disease are more likely to have heart disease than those with healthy gums. In addition oral health gives clues to overall health. It can provide warning signs for many other diseases & conditions. The Academy of General Dentistry states “the mouth is the pathway to the body”. Gum disease may contribute to heart disease because bacteria from infected gums can dislodge, enter the bloodstream attach to blood vessels and increase clot formation. Clots decrease blood flow to the heart, causing an increase in blood pressure and a risk of heart attack. How is your oral health? Do you have oral pain, infection or inflammation? Are you one of the 80% of Americans that have gum disease? Do you experience * red or swollen gums * bleeding gums while you

brush or floss * gums that seem to pull away from your teeth * chronic bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth *teeth that are loose?? If you answer yes to any of these questions you and your health are at risk. Our thorough and knowledgeable hygiene department offers a range of treatment options for those with gum disease. From routine hygiene visits to more advanced deep gum treatments our hygienists tailor each patient’s hygiene visit to target their individual concerns. Dental Lasers are the best new technology to fight and treat infection of periodontal disease. We were one of the first offices on the West coast of Florida to use dental lasers over 10 years ago. Over the years we have had remarkable results with virtually no pain, little bleeding and quicker healing time than traditional gum surgery. If this has struck a nerve (not literally) and you would like to take control of your dental health as I sadly wish my brother had, please call me at 727-785-8017. Larry Lieberman,DDS

olitically correct is also profitable these days as golf course designers and managers, who have traditionally been some of the recreation industry’s largest water hogs and consumers of chemicals, are employing creative, beautiful and smart conservation methods throughout their properties. In fact, their forward-thinking practices are attracting positive attention from golfers and stewardship organizations alike, as the consummate mind-body-spirit golf experience at some of the world’s most pristine and prized courses is now eco-friendly. A 2012 Forbes Travel Guide article profiled five U.S. courses recognized for protecting marshlands; composting and recycling; collecting water runoff for irrigation; creating wetlands; preserving dunes; reducing the use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers; utilizing drought-resistant plants; and creating flora and fauna diver-

sity in border areas. It’s more than just creating beauty for golfers and eco-havens for wildlife. It’s smart money. Conserving water and minimizing additives “is a bonus to owners,” says Curtis James, superintendent and director of grounds and agronomy at a private golf club on Chicago’s North Shore. James uses several conservation methods to maintain the health and beauty of the golf course. “Proper irrigation and drainage systems utilize rain water and minimize scheduled watering,” notes James. “Watering properly -- not overwatering and creating overly lush groundcover -- creates a dry, firm, fast playing condition and minimizes the water needed to maintain the course. And we plant native and wildlife areas that don’t need watering.” James says that he tries not to water at all. But when it’s absolutely needed, he does it only at the right times, in the right amounts, so the moisture will be absorbed and not run off. “We use organic fertilizers in correct amounts. to enhance the environment for all wildlife,” and encourage them to winter over, James explains. “And we use integrative pest management, which means we don’t overspray with preventive fungicides; we watch for certain disease thresholds and then spray. It’s all part of the green process.” ? Water management is one of the main components at all award-winning, ecofriendly courses, including the ones that make Links magazine’s top 10 list. Success stories make it sound easy, but it takes patient, comprehensive planning to get the balance right. Bradley Walwer, a civil engineer and recreational golfer, discusses the importance of phasing in changes carefully. “Water quality and quantity are huge, ongoing issues for waste-water engineers,” he says. Making mistakes can be costly. “For a while in the 1970s, environmentalists saw that effluent runoff was dirty, so they cleaned it before they got rid of it, making it so clean and oxygenated that the fish in streams and rivers loved it,” Walwer explains. “But, even more than the fish, the microbio-

logical life in the water loved it and exploded in numbers. (Unfortunately) these microbes multiplied so fast there wasn’t enough food to sustain them and they died off all at once.” “So engineers,” he continued, “are trying to develop smaller, localized, and natural areas -- retention ponds, bioswales, vegetative filters, constructed wetlands, etc. -- to address this problem.” “Golf course designers can do these same things; create the beautiful water hazard to collect, filter and reuse the effluent run off from the surrounding areas,” even including surrounding neighborhoods, he concludes. All benefit. Everyone has a role, designers and players alike. Anyone can recycle, many can choose to play at eco-friendly courses and some can even walk the 18 holes, enjoying a closer commune with nature. So, whether your next trip to the links is a destination golf vacation or a trip across town to your favorite Saturday-morning club, check out the native grasses, runoff-filtering stream, recycling bins, solar panels on the clubhouse and even the electric golf carts. Maybe you’ll be playing 18 holes at the next award-winning, eco-friendly course.

BUYING A BETTER PUTTER With putters, it’s all about personal preference.

HELP YOUR SHORT GAME

A

mateur golfers buy new putters as part performance and part psychology, as opposed to pros who will be forced to due to recent rule changes. Every year, equipment manufacturers use new materials and designs to attract the business of customers. But by focusing on a few specific details, golfers can avoid being overwhelmed and find the right putter for them. Brad Redding, a PGA master professional and a Golf magazine top 100 teacher, says the best way to find the right putter is to be fitted by a PGA professional. “I would call up a local pro and interview him,” suggests Redding. “You’ll find out right away if putting is a real passion for him.” Unlike salespeople at sporting good stores, PGA pros are trained to help you find the right putter for your build and swing. If you don’t have a pro’s guidance, however, Redding says to “pick up a putter off the rack and make four or five strokes on the practice green. It looks good, you feel good and you fall in love with it. But if it’s not a putter that fits you and your stroke, it’s not a long-term solution.” Next, Redding says players should know which factors are crucial and which are optional. Redding considers putter length “the most important factor.” A standard putter is 35 inches long, but Redding carries putters that range from 33 to 37 inches. He will have players follow a series of actions in order to teach them the proper way to address the ball when putting. Only after that series is complete, will he take a measurement. Putters that are too short or too long will pull a player out of proper alignment. Whether your putter has lines, stripes or varied colors is a matter of “personal preference,” according to Redding. Tomo Bystedt, director of product creation for irons, putters and wedges at TaylorMadeadidas Golf, concurs, adding, “Alignment features and visual appeal of the putter is part science, part art and design. A golfer has to feel confident that the putter is aligned correctly on the target line and that the other visual cues of the putter fur-

ther boost their confidence factor.” The next thing to consider is toe balance versus face balance and blade style versus mallet style. Typically, strokes fall into one of two categories: a straight back-and-forth or an arcing swing. Redding says players with straight swings can benefit from face-balanced and mallet head putters, whereas players with arcing swings can benefit from toe-balanced and blade-style putters. If several models fit the bill, he says “a bigger head will make more solid contact with the ball.” And according to Bystedt, “larger mallets tend to provide higher MOI (moment of inertia) in addition to stability and larger visual-alignment features.” Finally, players should consider whether they might benefit from new materials and tweaks to this year’s models, but opinions on this matter are split. Bystedt says, “Modern putter designs can provide additional performance benefits such as higher stability through counterbalancing or better forward roll through the use of a high-performance face insert.” He notes that this year’s counterbalanced putters -the Daddy Long Legs, Spider Blade and Spider Mallet -- “keep the stroke on path and keep putts on line with proper speed even on mis-hits.” Redding, however, cautions, “I think that (manufacturers have) tried putting inserts into putters and the impact feels very different to golfers. They might like that feel. But as far as performance, it doesn’t change the performance at all. No matter what manufacturers say, there’s no putter made where the ball purely rolls off the putter face and has overspin.” Many golfers will tell you that golf is a mixture of the physical, the technical and the psychological. Therefore, choosing the perfect putter will require a mixture of these three fields. How a putter is built, what it looks like and how it makes you feel can affect your game. Treat buying a putter as an investment. Spend the time and money to determine which putter is perfect for you. And when your score drops, it will have been worth every penny. PANACHE VUE’

WATER FITNESS

BENEFITS

T

he unique properties of water combine to offer one of the most effective environments for an exercise program. Water fitness is the great equalizer – participants of a wide range of skill and fitness levels can enjoy this low-impact, total body conditioning workout. With the addition of high-quality equipment, the benefits of a water workout are endless.

GETTING FIT: TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING

• Studies have shown convincingly that water workouts decrease body fat as effectively as land-based exercise programs. • Without performing a single sit-up, a water workout tones and strengthens the abdominals as a result of maintaining a vertical posture against the water’s resistance.

18

PANACHE VUE’

• Water offers a three-in-one workout for cardiovascular and muscular conditioning and enhanced flexibility. This timeefficient, total body conditioning workout results in increased strength and endurance, and improved biomechanics and balance. • Low-impact aquatic workouts can prevent the injury, strain and re-injury common to many land-based exercise. Water supports 90 percent of the body’s weight – resulting in reduced stress on joints, muscles, tendon and ligaments. • Water is a natural and instantly adjustable weight-training machine. Resistance is approximately four to 42 times greater in water than air. A workout can be as vigorous or light as desired by effectively utilizing the water’s resistance. • Unlike most land activities, water provides resistance in all directions, so both sides of the muscle pair can be strength-

ened simultaneously. For example, an arm curl works both biceps and triceps, since there is resistance to the movement in both directions. • An upright water workout can be more effective than swimming, because the body’s vertical position increases resistance 75 percent over swimming laps. Water Fitness Benefits -- 2

FEELING GOOD: FITNESS FOR A LIFETIME

• A regular water fitness program can result in the permanent reduction of blood pressure. Water’s hydrostatic pressure helps the heart circulate blood, which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise versus similar exertions on land. • Practical daily movements such as walking, lifting and reaching can be incorpo-

• Buoyancy equipment, such as the patented AquaJogger® belt, suspend the body securely and comfortably, supporting the head and neck out of the water, so hair stays dry and glasses can be worn. Water Fitness Benefits -- 3 • Especially beneficial to individuals with disabilities is the fact that water workouts offer a greater range of motion and freedom of movement than many land-based exercise.

rated into a water fitness workout to enhance functionality. This can result in the ability to enjoy and perform the activities of daily life with greater energy and ease. A water workout can be a social activity just like fitness walking or riding side-byside stationary bikes. With access to an indoor pool, water exercise becomes a great year-round activity, as well as a safe workout option during inclement weather. It can also be an affordable alternative to at-home workouts which often involve more expensive equipment. Water exercise is both exhilarating and therapeutic – reducing stress-related symptoms such as high blood pressure and muscle spasms. The water’s full body massage action provides a vigorous yet deeply relaxing workout that is usually pain free. Water exercise involves all muscle groups, yet virtually eliminates muscle soreness – leaving the muscles relaxed instead of

tight and sore.

WATER WALKING: NO SWIM SKILLS REQUIRED

• Water walking and running movements are simple to learn and require no swim skills, making deep water workouts accessible to virtually everyone – from those just beginning a workout program to those looking for a great cross-training option. • Whether in peak condition or recovering from surgery, the water’s forgiving environment supports and offers a light or challenging workout according to the person’s need – for both fragile physical therapy clients and intense athletes. • The water’s buoyancy helps even the uncoordinated land exerciser achieve a measure of grace with movements that are easy to learn. The fact that water obscures less than stellar bodies also makes this exercise appealing to the self-conscious.

• Water exercise demands the continual use of the abdominal and back muscles as well as the arms and legs in order to maintain erect body alignment and balance. This strengthening of the core abdominals and back can assist in managing and preventing back pain. • Water exercise enables a person to preserve as much fitness and function as possible while rehabilitating an injury. Many people heal to over 100 percent of preinjury strength and may actually improve their fitness level. Some individuals who have committed to aquatic therapy found their recovery time is reduced by half. • Heat is lost 25 times faster in water than air, allowing for longer and more comfortable workouts. This natural cooling of the body is particularly beneficial for people who tend to overheat during exercise, and in conditions such as pregnancy or multiple sclerosis, where maintaining a lower core body temperature is very important. • The water’s pressure helps the heart circulate blood which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise. As a result of this hydrostatic pressure, water exercise may be one of the best and safest activities for cardiac patients. It also helps reduce swelling, allowing many people with arthritis or injuries to exercise. n To find a retailer near you visit www.AquaJogger.com or call 1-800-922-9544. DOES SPENDING MONEY MAKE YOU HEALTHY? 20

PANACHE VUE’

WE CURRENTLY HAVE SICK CARE, NOT HEALTH CARE

Last year Americans spent $2.8 trillion on healthcare. That is around $8,000 per person. So does this mean that we are all healthy and living well? Absolutely NOT! In fact, we lead the world in heart disease, obesity, and cancer. Astonishingly, 5 out of 6 Americans will be diagnosed with either heart disease or cancer. If we were spending the most money in healthcare and had the healthiest people, maybe it would be worth it. But we are spending the most money AND have the unhealthiest people. In a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, of 37 different developed countries the United States ranked 37th (dead last) in terms of overall health of the population.

SO WHERE ARE WE SPENDING ALL OF THIS MONEY?

When we are sick or in pain, we go to the doctor. We get prescriptions to help cure and prevent illness and pain. What do we do when that medication has a side effect or no longer works? We go back and get more medications for the next side effect. Americans take up 5% of the world’s population, yet we consume 85% of the world’s medications. You would think that if drugs make you healthy then we would be the healthiest nation, and that is far from the truth. We had 1.1 million people die last year because of drugs and these are not street drugs like heroin or other illegal drugs. These are prescription drugs that were prescribed for the right condition, the right amount, the right time. Prescriptions are not the only culprit,

a large amount of that money is spent in nursing homes and cancer treatment centers. We have so many sick and ailing people in our population that we are seeing more and more long-term nursing facilities. People may be living longer, but we are not living better.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH

A lot of people believe that genetics are to blame for the disease we see in our society today, but only 2-5% of degenerative illnesses are actually caused by genetics. So that leaves 95-98% of disease that is caused by lifestyle. The foods we eat, the drinks we drink, and the habits we live are the main cause of the increase in disease. Our offices are focused on HEALTH care. We recognize that health is not just about what you eat and whether or not you exercise. Our offices implement maximized mind, maximized nutrition, maximized nerve supply, maximized oxygen and lean muscle. We personalize each care plan and work with our patients to establish health and wellness goals that create a healthy lifestyle that maximizes each patients’ quality of life.

BUT WHAT TRULY SETS US APART FROM ALL OTHER WELLNESS CLINICS It is our dedication to whole health well-

ness. Our patients are not just adjusted and sent on their way. We spend time focusing on spinal CORRECTION not just spinal alignment. By providing our patients with in office and at home stretching, strengthening, and lifestyle changes, our patients are the healthiest they can possibly be without introducing toxins. It is truly about balance and focus on health.

WHAT DOES CORRECTIVE CARE MEAN? If your spine and Central Nervous System are “abnormal,” there is a need for corrective chiropractic care. This type of care will restore “normal” spinal position and alignment. By properly restoring normal curves to the spine and aligning the vertebrae, it will eliminate interferences allowing your body to function and heal “normally.” This optimizes your chance to live at 100% of your body’s peak performance. A healthy spine will allow your body to express a normal body temperature, a normal blood pressure, and other measureable norms for the spine itself. Much like braces straighten teeth, it is our aim to restore the proper alignment of your spine. Recent research allows us to now know the measurements and proper alignment of your spine. There is a normal body temperature, a normal blood pressure, and there are measureable norms for the spine. We take the necessary steps to restore the regions of abnormal alignment to nor-

POSTURE AND THE BRAIN Having good posture can improve your confidence, mood and overall health SHARON NAYLOR

A

re you a slumper? Check your posture right now to see if your shoulders are rounded forward and your back curled. Chances are you’ve eased into your natural posture: slouched down, head in alignment with your spine, shoulders back, back not straight. And your brain may be paying the price. Researchers at several top academic institutions, including Harvard and Columbia universities, have been studying the link between bad posture and the brain for decades, and their recent findings show that improving posture can improve the brain’s function, and thus your mood and memory levels. Researchers, for instance, found that when you assume what they call “power poses” of confident stance and tall, uplifted posture, your decision-making is subconsciously affected. When you stand or sit up taller, and pull your shoulders back and outward, your brain gets a signal that it’s the confident, powerful you in charge of your thinking, and, in turn, you might make more confident choices. A 2003 Ohio State University study found that when you shake your head “no,” or nod your head “yes” while observing a scenario or listening to information, you may form positive or negative opinions about your observations depending on the motion of your head

22

PANACHE VUE’

and its positive or negative message to the brain. And when you sit up straight, you’re more likely to think positively and recall more positive memories. Slumping and slouching can generate negative memories, thoughts and perceptions, which creates stress hormones in the brain, as opposed to happier hormones that can trickle down into your daily choices and create a more energetic, happier you that feels like working out. Everything is connected, and it all starts with how you hold your frame. Dana Carney, a social psychologist at University of California, Berkeley, conducted a 2010 survey that was among the first to reveal that power poses demonstrating confidence (regardless of whether or not a person actually feels confident) increase levels of testosterone and lower levels of cortisol -- the stress hormone -in the brain. Because testosterone is associated with self-confidence, having good posture can create hormones in the brain that make you feel more self-assured. Carney says the power pose sends a signal to the brain, and what begins as a neural impulse turns into an actual, physiological response that boosts brainpower. And science aside, your posture affects how you see yourself, as well as how others see you. If you’re slumped down and slouching during a job interview, for example, the interviewer will likely see you as less confident, and perhaps will have a neural impulse to judge you as less capable. If you have good posture, with your shoulders back and

your body aligned, you can look better in your clothes and will likely receive compliments from loved ones, which will boost your confidence and mood. You could also just love how you look in the mirror, which will make you feel lighter and more positive. Good posture also pertains to walking. If you walk slumped down and in a shuffle, you look bedraggled and overwrought, which can make you actually feel bedraggled and overwrought. When you walk uplifted and with confidence, your brain registers “uplifted and with confidence,” and pumps out happy hormones to match the message. Physical pain from bad posture can affect your brain, too. When you slouch often, you may experience back, neck, shoulder and even wrist pain, which can send signals to the brain that you’re suffering. The brain then needs to create pain-reducing hormones rather than happy ones. It’s quite hard to feel happy when you’re achy, sore or in such pain that you have to take medication for relief. Pain can cause depression when the brain gets sapped of positive hormones. So in many connected ways, good posture makes for a happier brain. And with your happier brain, you have better relationships, fitness, work performance, more intimacy and other positive effects on your lifestyle. There are several ways to improve your posture, including taking a Yoga for Better Posture class, or just yoga classes in general, since yoga elongates the body and retrains your frame to be more upright with your shoulders back and spine aligned, the position will soon feel more natural to you. Exercise as a whole also helps to improve posture. You might also ask a co-worker or relative to help you get more mindful of your posture, with a gentle touch on your shoulder if you’re slouched down at your desk or kitchen counter. When you feel the touch, you’ll straighten up your posture and send a positive message to your brain. And even if you get a hundred touches in a day, you’ll eventually retrain your frame to hold power poses, and your helper won’t have to signal you to straighten up as often.

e all know that what we put into our bodies has an effect on the way our bodies perform and feel. We all have also heard about the benefits of supplements and vitamins, and how they can help provide us with the much needed nutrients that our bodies may not get through proper nutrition or isn’t produced naturally within us due to age. There are many vitamins and supplements available to offer improvements in hair, skin and nails. For example, Vitamin A helps with skin elasticity, wrinkles and aging of the skin. Biotin, one of the most talked about currently, helps promote healthy skin, growth and strength in hair. One supplement not discussed often and that you may not be familiar with is called Orthosilicic acid. This supplement helps nourish your body’s beauty proteins. Orthosillicic acid is a dietary form of silicone which is a mineral involved in

the formation of collagen. This supplement has been shown to boost hair strength and increase hair thickness. Another product on the market that is beneficial and inexpensive is Coconut oil. Coconut oil is essential for many uses such as improving the immune system (when ingested) and reducing the loss of needed proteins for the hair. When used topically, coconut oil has been shown to increase strength and growth of eyelashes -this is a natural alternative to prescription or pricey eyelash growth medicines. SKIN TIGHT BY VALERIE KELLEY

T

here’s no need for remorse. No need to feel the slightest tinge of guilt for celebrating the early arrival of spring in Tampa Bay. Sure, we all have friends and family suffering through snow drifts, ice storms and blizzards, but that’s not our fault, is it? Seventy five degree days and cloudless skies demand a certain revelry, a glorious basking. That is, unless the thought of wobbly thighs, bare bellies and swimsuits causes genuine panic. For many, the arrival of warm breezes and spring break is not always a joyous occasion. But getting beach body ready doesn’t necessarily mean a master cleanse and liposuction. Besides... who wants all that anesthesia and down time? We’re talking about investing in alternative weapons of fat destruction. From Exilis to Zerona, FDA-approved, non-invasive, body shaping techniques are all the rage, but not all fat-blasting wands are created equal. Zerona laser liposuction requires a fourweek commitment involving a low-fat diet, one week of special supplements, two weeks of laser treatments and then waiting a week or more to see results. Zeltiq’s CoolSculpting uses an applicator piece that has a strong vacuum where fat is pinched down and, literally, frozen. The frozen fat cells die and are then expelled naturally, within six weeks to two months after treatment. If it sounds painful, it can be. Treated areas are often sore, tender or bruised; plus, CoolS-

www.PanacheVue.com

culpting is not FDA-approved for use on the butt, thighs, arms or neck. Which leaves Exilis, perhaps the simplest, most effective method for body shaping and reduction of targeted fatty deposits on the body. The Exilis Body Contouring Machine uses radiofrequency energy and vibrations to volumetrically heat deeper tissues and ramp up the metabolic activity of fat cells, causing them to shrink. The thermal energy also boosts the body’s natural ability to produce collagen, so not only will your fat cell volume decrease, but your skin will tighten and become youngerlooking, as well. Exilis safely targets problem areas such as shaping and contouring for flanks (“love handles”), sculpting double chin and neck areas, fine-tuning belly fat and back fat (“bra roll”), as well as significantly tightening skin all over the body. HOUSE OF DALI

SPRING FASHION W

ith the birth of spring season, we’re looking back to the Golden Age of Romantic Renaissance to Inspire a fresh look. We’re dreaming of feminine details on clothing such as ruffles, lace and soft flowing fabrics in feminine palettes of blush, rose, radiant orchid and cream – these are the ladylike colors to fall in love with this spring. I had the pleasure of working with model Olga Chulgareva, who is of Russian descent with stunning features. Here she is featured in one of spring’s hottest hair trends a “Romantic Halo Braid”. This braided up-do is soft and feminine and will brighten any look. Shades of blush rose, and cream are flattering, especially when spun into airy dresses. The effect is delicate but not overly precious and does not give a prissy effect. Apply classic elements like ruffles, floral, lace and peplums shapes that are lean, geometric and exaggerated. It’s gutsy yet a glorious idea. The result creates femininity that replaces daintiness with drama.

HOW TO WEAR IT

Whether you are wearing a dress, a jacket, or a top; you only need one statement piece or element for a maximum impact. There’s no need for bulky necklaces or intense makeup; accessories should be simple with pretty nude nails… Add a little spring to your step with strappy sandals, pastel platforms or white heels.

Dali Hernandez is the Creative Director and head designer for House of Dali. She is also a Real Estate Agent operating in the Tampa Bay area. Dali’s arrival to the fashion industry has been making numerous headlines; however designing is nothing new for this NY native. She recalls her childhood’s obsession with fashion magazines, and with the help of a pair of scissors, she would cut various designs to mix and match and ultimately transform her bedroom walls into the latest fashion show. The days she went fabric shopping with her mother gave her an early perspective on quality variation and how the same design can be completely altered due to fabric choice. Dali’s fashion line is for the woman who still maintains her social status and is not afraid to make a fashion statement. She feels that there shouldn’t really be a target age or group for her line, because she feels that women are sexy and edgy at any age. ASK AUDREY

WHAT IS A GIRLFRIEND’S ROLE WITH HER BOYFRIEND’S CHILDREN?

D

BY AUDREY MABREY

ating someone new can be fun and exciting; however, when there are children involved it can often become difficult and confusing. This situation is one where you surely want to tread lightly. Otherwise, you might find yourself in a sticky situation that could have been prevented had you known and recognized your role from the very beginning. There are many additional factors besides you merely being an outsider so you will need to be patient and positive that your boyfriend is someone you truly love and see yourself with long-term. Children often feel threatened by and unsure of a new partner for multiple reasons so it is important to put their feelings first. Although you may want to immediately test the waters of possible motherhood you all should successfully move past the “honeymoon phase” before even considering

www.PanacheVue.com

introductions. The initial meeting is best in a fun or relaxed environment. Additionally, you want to make sure that you are not introduced as his girlfriend. Displaying any romantic affection is also not recommended. Remember your overall goal consists of becoming woven into an already made quilt as carefully as possible. This process desperately needs to be taken seriously and handled delicately. Women by nature are often a natural when it comes to mothering a child but if you believe your role is to mother your boyfriend’s children you are sadly mistaken. There are multiple categories of motherhood such as disciplinary, cheerleader, nurse, taxi driver, teacher, and mentor, to name a few. However, none of these in no way fall under the description of your role in the beginning, except for being the best cheerleader you can be. The relationship between mother and child is precious to say the least. As time moves along you become more acquainted with and closer to your boyfriend’s children therefore, you can begin to slowly implement other categories into your description. I like to compare it to cooking a meal you have never cooked before from scratch. You must pay close attention to detail and timing is everything. Perhaps after the first year or two is when it might become acceptable to sometimes be their taxi-driver and nurse. The most important thing you can do is always consider that the children’s feelings take precedence over your own. Considering his children’s mother’s

feelings might NOT be a concern of yours but let me tell you this is imperative. She should and has every right to have her guard up from the very beginning. You definitely need to meet her but this also should be after perhaps the first 6 months. It would be a great idea to let her know up front that you respect her position as their mother. Additionally, it might be helpful to discuss her children’s interest with her. Let her know their feelings are most important and you believe it is best to move slowly in getting to know them. Your boyfriend may have a few choice words about his past relationship with his ex and I would advise you to recall that every story has three sides. If you find his opinion of her to hold true please do not ever bad mouth their mother in front of them. Children love their parents unconditionally and attempting to tamper with their image of them is completely selfish. Disregard for her emotions and opinions is an easy way to set yourself directly in the center of an explosion. It is important to note every relationship and family is unique. My advice comes from my personal experience as a step-mother in my previous marriage as well as my current experience as the mother of two children who is dating someone who is not their biological father. When children are involved we must consider the affect our presence will have on their precious emotions. We must also be mindful of the woman who loves them unconditionally. If you truly love your boyfriend and can imagine your life with him and his children then just lead with caution when incorporating yourself into their lives. Nevertheless, you should still expect disagreements in regards to the children, their mother, and parenting at some point. I sincerely hope the best for you. My prayer is for you to become inspired by the unconditional love a parent has for their child. If you have any questions regarding life, love, family, faith, or career please email me at AskAudrey30@outlook.com In November of 2009 Audrey Mabrey was attacked by her estranged husband and nearly lost her life. Since then she has become an advocate and public speaker and travels around the world sharing her story in the hopes of raising awareness and inspiring others to believe in themselves.

HEALTH

OBESITY & DIABETES:

A Deadly Combination

T

ype 2 diabetes is occurring with ever-increasing frequency in young adults and even children. This alarming statistic is the result of an increase in obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Reduced muscle mass and increased fat contribute to a condition known as metabolic syndrome, which is associated with insulin resistance. For reasons that are not clear, increased body fat and reduced muscle make it more difficult for insulin to pump sugar into cells. In susceptible individuals, diabetes occurs when, despite increased insulin concentrations, blood sugar rises to abnormally high levels. Diabetes is a chronic illness affecting numerous organ systems. These changes account for the majority of diseases accompanying diabetes and contribute to much of the suffering. The most serious is elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, which lead to wide-spread vascular disease and a high incidence of heart attacks, strokes and impaired blood supply to the lower limbs. High fat levels also cause the liver to enlarge, leading to declines in liver function. The altered metabolism that accompanies diabetes causes the deposition of carbohydrate products in the smallest arteries

32

PANACHE VUE’

called arterioles. This substance, known as sorbitol, causes changes in these vessels that provide critical blood supply to every important organ. Over time, these vessels become blocked, and blood supply to many tissues is compromised. This involvement of small arterioles is called “diabetic microangiopathy.” The most important organ systems affected are the peripheral nerves, retinas and kidneys. Many diabetics suffer from peripheral neuropathy, which causes a great deal of pain and discomfort. As the condition progresses, sensation in the lower limbs is lost, making it difficult to recognize heat, pressure or even minor injury. This leads to skin breakdown and ulcers, usually on the feet, that are very difficult to heal. Because the small blood vessels are inadequate, the problem becomes even worse and very difficult to manage. Visits to a surgeon are often necessary, special shoes are needed, and recovery is difficult. Some medications can help the pain, providing some relief, but the damage to arterioles and nerves is permanent. Nerve involvement also affects the bowel and penis. Functional changes in the bowel occur, leading to a condition called “diabetic enteropathy.” The stomach becomes partially paralyzed, causing abdominal pain and bloating. Involvement of the colon causes both constipation and explosive diarrhea, which often occur at night. Impotence is another common complication occurring because both the nerve and blood supplies to the penis are impaired. Impaired nerve supply prevents the penis from getting the message to be-

come erect, and impaired blood supply makes engorgement impossible. Small blood vessels in the retina become occluded. This causes retinal damage, making the retina prone to detachment. To improve blood supply, small blood vessels proliferate. However, they are fragile and prone to rupturing, causing sudden bleeding into the eye and making diabetes one of the most common causes of blindness. While these problems cause a great deal of suffering, it is involvement of the kidneys that leads to life-threatening illness. Chronic renal failure gradually develops, and sometimes kidney damage causes excessive loss of protein and electrolytes from the body. Kidney disease raises the blood pressure and aggravates the elevated cholesterol that occurs with diabetes, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure. Diabetes is a devastating disease. Lifestyle changes are not a cure, but they can delay by decades or prevent the development of disease. Children are getting this disease because of their dietary habits, substantial weight gain and lack of any form of exercise. Inactivity and overweight also precipitates the illness at an older age. It may take many years for this illness to manifest, so at-risk individual’s blood sugar should be screened. If diabetes is diagnosed, it should be an urgent wake-up call for health reform. Weight loss and exercise, by decreasing fat content and improving muscle mass, can often revert metabolism to normal, making more therapy unnecessary. If weight loss and exercise are inadequate, numerous medications are available that can keep blood sugar controlled and prevent the devastating complications of the illness. Please remember it is never ever too early or too late to pay attention to your health. HEALTH

SEEKING THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH Eat Less. BY DAVID LIPSCHITZ

T

hank goodness older people don’t want to live forever. When I tell my patients I have no wish to prolong their lives but assure them that the lives they have are of the highest possible quality, the answer is almost always the same: “Thank you, doctor. That’s exactly what I want.” And yet many naive baby boomers are desperately seeking the magic approach that will prolong their lives to age 100 and beyond. Well, there really is a way to achieve this, but it is so rigorous that only the truly committed “nuts” will accomplish it. For almost 30 years, scientists have known that feeding animals a diet that decreases food intake by 30 percent prolongs their average and maximal life expectancy

34

PANACHE VUE’

by 30 percent. Extrapolating this to man means increasing our average life expectancy to 100, and maximal life expectancy to 140 or 150. Restricting calories also improves health, with less kidney disease (the major cause of death in rats) and a dramatic reduction in the occurrence of cancer. Calorie-restricted mice stay healthy for a long time. Then, when they’re much older than the average, they gradually lose weight, get less active, and eventually lie down in a corner and die peacefully. Autopsies show that they have truly died of “old age,” as no specific illness or cause of death can be identified. There is no evidence of cancer, heart disease, lung disease or kidney disease. How low-calorie diets prolong life has been the target of intensive research. We do know that every marker of advancing age is either slowed or reversed. As we age, cells throughout the body lose their ability to neutralize toxic chemicals, and age-related changes in metabolism make cell function less efficient. It’s thought that restricting calories makes cells more robust and more resistant to declines in function and environmental insults. More recently, research on monkeys has found similar results. These results are

widely known in the anti-aging society, and there is a small group of people who have attempted this on themselves. They have dramatically restricted their food intake, consuming 30 percent less than their original diets. A recent report in the Washington Post described one man who for four years was consuming only two meals a day consisting of fruits, vegetables and nuts, and unsweetened herb tea as a snack. This diet is truly draconian. Currently, the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health is sponsoring research studies on these people. First reports indicate their life spans may be prolonged. These people appear healthier, have lower blood pressure, very low cholesterols, markedly improved overall metabolism, and significant reductions in the biomarkers of the aging process and of devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes and cancer. This provides compelling evidence that yes, indeed there may be a way to live longer. But would we really want to do this? Few of us, I think, would voluntarily forgo a third of or daily calories for the rest of our lives. We simply don’t have the stamina or the desire to go hungry all of the time. I hate to say it, but the mice on these calorie-restricted diets aren’t happy mice. They are overly active and agitated, and they are always hungry, which makes them pretty grumpy. Researchers on the study say mice are always trying to bite the hands that are not feeding them. Not much of a life, I’m afraid. We always strive to assure that life is of the highest possible quality, and while overeating can cause a great deal of harm, under-eating, I believe, would make life not worth living. So while calorie restriction may prolong life and reduce disease, it is not practical in real life. And yet, this research is very important. If we can truly understand how calorie restriction prolongs life, we may be able to truly find the magic bullet that could slow the aging process and make us live longer without such severe reductions in food intake. While living longer may be a questionable goal, reduction in the prevalence of disease and dependency should improve our health and quality of life.

LEARN MALIBU HISTORY THROUGH ITS HISTORIC HOMES

T

he mention of the name Malibu conjures up visions of the wealthy and famous, of a gated enclave where anyone without a Hollywood pedigree need not apply. But the happy surprise is that the area has a colorful history and much to offer anyone who makes time to seek it out. I made this discovery quite by accident. While I was driving down the Pacific Coast Highway during a recent visit to Los Angeles, I saw the small sign that marked the entrance to the Adamson House. Out of curiosity I turned into the parking lot and walked up the lane to another world. It turns out the land now operated as a California state park was originally peopled by the Chumash Indians. They named it Humaliwu -- “where the surf sounds loudly” -- which sounds strikingly similar to “Malibu” when said aloud and is the origin of the area’s name today. This civilization faded out as European explorers -- probably even Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo himself -- brought the battles and diseases that did them in. The land then changed hands between Spain and Mexico, eventually becoming part of the United States. It was then sold and handed down until it reached Frederick Hastings Rindge, who bought 17,000 acres at $10 each in 1892, and that’s where the story of the Adamson House -- and modern-day Malibu -- begins.

38

PANACHE VUE’

Rindge, who made his fortune in oil and insurance, developed the property into a working ranch. Later his daughter, Rhoda, would marry the ranch superintendent, Merritt Adamson, and in 1929 they would build their home here at the beach on Vaquero Hill. Meanwhile, Rhoda’s widowed mother discovered that the red clay on the property was good for making tile, and she established the world-famous Malibu Potteries that created an architectural trend reminiscent of Spain but specific to Southern California. That would explain why the house is tastefully decorated in every room with artistic tiles -- from what looks like an ornate Persian rug in a wide first-floor corridor to the ceramic clock in the kitchen and the colorful crannies in the bathrooms, bedrooms and pool house. In addition to commissioning Stiles Clements, a well-known architect of the time, the family also imported European artists to paint pictures of the area’s history and decorate everything from ceiling beams to door panels. The details in every corner of the home have been seen to. Since Mrs. Adamson loved the architecture of castles and her husband preferred a nautical theme, one of the windows in the sitting room that adjoins the master bedroom resembles a porthole and the other is long and narrow like the embrasures (“arrow slits”) found in castles.

One of the French windows downstairs is protected by a wrought-iron grapevine that incorporates a playful spider web in one of its corners. A painting of Neptune on a fireplace hood faces toward the sea so he can survey his kingdom, and in the dining room a large mirror over the sideboard ensured that guests with their backs to the ocean could still enjoy the view. Docent Leslee Arneson explained to the children in our group that the family ate meals promptly at 7 a.m., noon and 6 p.m., and if the children weren’t washed up and in their seats at those times, they weren’t allowed to eat. Later, as we visited the children’s rooms upstairs, however, she pointed out a galley-like kitchen where the errant offspring could go to make themselves a snack. A frequent visitor to the home was Will Rogers, who walked up the beach from his ranch in nearby Pacific Palisades. For a while the cowboy/humorist lived in Beverly Hills, where he was once mayor for a short time, but eventually he rented and then bought his own ranch as a place to keep horses and play polo. Once I heard this information, I made that my next stop. Here I was lucky enough to have a tour with a park ranger, John Conroy, who has encyclopedic knowledge of the man who is obviously one of his heroes. As we walked through the ranch house he told

stories about the iconic porch swing that hangs in the living room, the Monterey mission furniture, the animal heads and Indian blankets, and the portrait of Sequoia, whom Rogers admired because he codified the Cherokee language. Conroy also recounted anecdotes about Rogers’ friendship with Charles Lindbergh and his discovery of an unknown cowboy singer, Gene Autry. He pointed out the chair and ashtray reserved for W.C. Fields, the typewriter where Rogers wrote his newspaper columns and the piano played by his wife, Betty. “It’s ultimately about Betty,” Conroy said. “He needed her anchoring energy, someone to come home to. He was a family man.” The Rogers ranch became such a popular place for friends who wanted to play polo and others who just dropped in to visit that Betty eventually added on an extra wing that she designated “family only.” At the time of Rogers’ death in a plane crash with Wiley Post, the house had 31 rooms. “It was a Frankenstein house,” Conroy said. “It was constantly under construction as he expanded.” Today the house, outbuildings and grounds -- “the barn that jokes built” and the only outdoor polo field in Los Angeles -- are kept exactly as they were when the Rogers family lived there. The ranch is

now a state park with the sole mission of promoting equestrian activities. Nearby is the Getty Villa, a museum built alongside the original home of the J. Paul Getty family. My guide here was my friend Jim Farber who grew up in this area and once visited the home as a child with a friend whose mother was a secretary there. An art lover and critic, he watched as the villa was constructed and as it changed with the opening of the lavish Getty Center in nearby Brentwood. With the paintings, furniture and sculpture moved to that new facility, the villa was then remodeled to house just Greek and Roman antiquities. “The great thing about the museum now is its cohesiveness,” Farber said. “Before it was a hodgepodge.” The building itself is worth a visit. Constructed to look like Herculaneum -the town near Pompeii in Italy that was also destroyed by Mount Vesuvius -- it is accurate down to the finest details of inlaid marble tile work, decorative ceilings, ornate columns and fountains. Inside are galleries where ancient artifacts are arranged around religious, military and theatrical themes. One grouping of wine cups, a storage jar, jewelry and ritual vessels depicts scenes from “The Iliad.” Some rooms are devoted to exceptional pieces such as the statue of Aphrodite and the Lansdowne Herakles, a Roman copy of

a Greek prototype that was found in the ruins of Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli, Italy, and is said to have been J. Paul Getty’s prize possession. Another friend took me for a hike at Solstice Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains that are also part of Malibu and promised me a surprise. Amid the scenic trails and dramatic rock outcroppings was another historic home, this one built by architect Paul R. Williams for Fred and Florence Roberts in the 1950s. Called “Tropical Terrace House,” the house was tucked deep into the canyon among gardens and pools where some hikers still swim today. The house was constructed of fireresistant materials and engineered with an elaborate fire protection system to protect itself from possible brush fires. Inevitably it did burn in 1982, but the patios, chimneys and staircases remain intact and give visitors a taste of what life might have been like in the heyday of this home.
