ctober in Florida this year is “hot” as ever! It’s also a time for many to vacation here from other parts of the country. I had the opportunity to see some good friends from Chicago, my home town, in the past week. Friends I haven’t seen in over twenty plus years! What a good feeling to catch up and reminisce about high school. Its funny how we all get older, the years pass us by, but certain things never change. It’s a good feeling to be with those we have so many memories with, time stands still with them. Here’s to my girls MaryJo and Michele, and their hubbies, Frank and Joe. Thank you for a wonderful time at Sandy Shores in Madeira Beach, love you and can’t wait to see you again! October is Domestic Violence month. Please read my friend Audrey Mabrey’s article and support her cause (Family Field & Fun Day) to benefit her friend, Megan Kimbrough on October 20, 2012 in Apollo Beach. I feel blessed to have met Audrey! She is probably one of the strongest women I have ever met and I feel blessed to call her a friend. Panache Vue’ is also a proud sponsor of the following events. Letters to Sala:
A Young Woman’s Life in the Nazi Labor Camps Letters to Sala: A Young Woman’s Life in Nazi Labor Camps is a treasure trove of documents saved by one young woman during her five year ordeal of internment. The exhibition, a graphic narrative through facsimiles and original materials, provides a remarkable first-hand view of the human drama that unfolded among Jews forced to work as slave laborers during the war. Letters to Sala, curated by Jill Vexler, is an exhibition of the New York Public Library and the French Children of the Holocaust Foundation. irque du Soleil is known worldwide for its exhilarating, emotional, edge-of-seat entertainment that successfully showcases what happens when writers, directors and even cast members continually think outside of the box. KOOZA proves it’s no exception to that runaway-train-ofthought when the U.S. tour stages its final shows in St. Petersburg this fall before re-opening early next year in London. Though the name KOOZA is inspired by the Sanskrit word “koza,” which means box, chest or treasure, the presentation of fantastic characters, gravity-defying acrobatics, mesmerizing music and strikingly beautiful stage is about as out-of-the-box as it gets. The limited Tampa Bay engagement begins Nov. 8 when KOOZA will be performed locally for the first time under the Big Top allwhite tent occupying part of the Tropicana Field parking lot for a few weeks. Within the climate-controlled Grand Chapiteau, are 2,500 seats and a wonderful world that features live performances from six musicians and two singers, an array of acts by 53 performers and fantastic contraptions with names like Wheel of Death or Teeterboard. “KOOZA is about human connection and the world of duality, good and bad,” said David Shiner, who wrote and directed KOOZA. “The tone is fun and funny, light and open. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it’s very much about ideas, too. As it evolves we are exploring concepts such as fear, identity, recognition and power.” Whether already a fan of Cirque du Soleil or someone experiencing this signature-style of entertainment for the first time, know that each production showcases original music, costumes and a global cast of top-rated performers. Several of the 53 performing artists in KOOZA have received awards from important circus arts competitions. Among the featured acts is an unprecedented approach to the high wire and the breathtaking Wheel of Death – an act that Cirque du Soleil has never before presented under the Big Top. Since its premiere in April of 2007, KOOZA has charmed close to 4 million spectators in North America and Japan. KOOZA will be the 4th big top production to visit the Tampa Bay area since 2002. KOOZA tickets are now available online at cirquedusoleil.com/ kooza. October 2012

ut of your fitness routine? Never exercised? Have not exercised in a while? Bored with your exercise regimen? Need a new challenge? Fall back into shape with Pilates! Pilates exercise, created in the 1920’s by a man named Joseph Pilates, is no fitness fad, and is here to stay because it works. Among the many benefits of Pilates exercise is that it can be adjusted to fit the needs and interests of all kinds of people. Pilates is for men, women, elite athletes, seniors, pregnant women, yoga enthusiasts, people with back pain, and everyone in between. To get in shape with Pilates is to embark on an amazing journey of not just physical fitness, but as Joseph Pilates said “a complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit”. Everyone likes to talk about the flat abs Pilates gives you or the long, lean muscles, even weight loss. If one commits to Pilates training those are among the benefits you can enjoy. In doing Pilates the goal is “a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.” (Joseph Pilates). In order for the Pilates method to work its magic, the exercises should be done with certain principles in mind. Pilates principles include: centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, flow and whole body development. These ideas are integral to achieving the dramatic results for which Pilates is known; a body that is strong, flexible, and able to gracefully accommodate the movement demands of one’s life. If consistent in Pilates training, one’s fitness level will continue to improve. As one progresses, the pace of a workout picks up as do the strength and stability challenges. Pilates can be done on the floor (called Mat exercises) or on specialized equipment, including the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel or other small apparatus. To embark on a Pilates program tailored to the individual, seek out a Certified, experienced Pilates instructor.

onsignment boutiques are all the rage these days. Hidden treasures are waiting for savvy shoppers. And the great news is that they aren’t your grandmother’s consignment shops anymore. According to the National Association of Resale Professionals, consignment boutiques have become shopping destinations. As much as 15% of shoppers have discovered the magic of consignment boutiques compared to 21% of shoppers who patronize the major department stores. Today’s consignment boutiques offer conscientious shoppers gently used designer clothing and other fabulous finds at very reasonable prices that are far below retail costs. Fresh Threads Designer Consignment Boutique in south Tampa, established in 2009, offers ladies’ high quality designer clothing and accessories. Juli Halifax, from the New York City area, which is, of course, the fashion capital of the world, is the owner. While living in Brooklyn, Juli roamed the shopping districts of SoHo, Tribeca, Park Slope and Greenwich Village, admiring the styles and collecting ideas for the boutique she would own one day. That day finally arrived when she acquired Fresh Threads in 2010. Juli and her staff provide personalized service to their customers. Each customer and consignor is truly appreciated. There are many consignment shop choices available, and Juli and her staff take it to heart when Fresh Threads is chosen over all others. Juli’s focus is to provide the financially conscious woman with quality, contemporary designer couture, shoes, jewelry and handbags way below retail prices. Some of the famous brands available in this boutique are Anthropologie, Burberry, Tory Burch, Chanel, Coach, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Frye, Jimmy Choo, Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik, Prada and Roberto Cavalli, but there are many, many more treasures hidden in this trendy boutique. Hidden treasures indeed, and it’s all about the thrill of the hunt; nothing can match the excitement a savvy, urban huntress experiences when she finds that one of

a kind piece that will make her look and feel like a million bucks, especially when it is actually the bargain of the year. Juli understands that women love pretty things in all price ranges, and she offers items for everyone’s budget. At Fresh Threads, conscientious shoppers from all economic levels buy fabulous, high-quality clothing for a fraction of the retail price. When developing the inventory, Juli and her staff carefully select only the best contemporary styles and designer items that are in excellent condition. Besides all the hottest designer goods,
personal touches and carefully selected merchandise, Fresh Threads’ staff can provide closet organization, personal styling and fashion design by one of their referrals or their full time employee, stylist and fashion designer Bobbie Y Kingsbury (aka The Fashion Authority). Fresh Threads has grown significantly since Juli took it over. Initially starting with 150 registered consignors, the number has
increased to 600 consignors in less than two years. This is in part due to the dedication to personalized service. Close attention is paid to their clients’ style preferences and they even keep a wish list of customers’ “wants.” In addition to designer merchandise, Fresh Threads offers unique items by local artists. It is important to Juli to build relationships and strong ties to the community. She also conducts a prom dress drive every spring. One of Juli’s most memorable experiences was when she received a photograph and handwritten note from a high school girl who received one of the gowns for her prom. Juli was deeply moved by this girl’s gratitude. Helping the community is something that drives Juli every day. She also supports local charities including Alpha House, The Spring of Tampa Bay, Kimberly Home and the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, just to name a few. Juli has always had a flair for fashion and owning her own boutique has been a dream that has finally come true. She owes her success to every entrepreneur and business associate she has met along her path, every business seminar she has attended and every business book she has ever read; Juli has learned something valuable from every experience. Juli also credits family and friends for her success. One very special person who has taught her the precious lesson of how to be strong and persevere, regardless of circumstances, is her infant son, Gavin, who was born premature, only weighing one pound, five ounces at birth. “I start my day with gratitude for him, for life, and the power of prayer.” Fresh Threads designer consignment boutique is located in South Tampa at 4230 S. MacDill Avenue. They also have a “pop up” shop is inside The Emporium, an eclectic shop offering clothing, furniture, shabby chic treasures and gifts. The Emporium is in Largo at 904 Clearwater Largo Road. Both locations are open Tuesday through Saturday. Please visit Fresh Threads on Facebook or the website for specific hours. Andrew Ashton & Steven Anderson Introduce Their First-Ever Collection at Tampa Bay Fashion Week BY TOM CASTAÑEDA | PHOTOGRAPHY CREDITS: JAMIE JACKSON & NICK ANDERSON
S
ince 2008, Andrew Ashton and Steven Anderson have been actively involved in the behindthe-scenes goings-on at Tampa Bay Fashion Week. In recent years, the dynamic duo has even stepped up its responsibilities to include overseeing the hair & makeup artists at the all-important designer runway show. But this year Ashton and Anderson, with their combined 50-plus years of ex-
20 PANACHE VUE’
perience in the beauty industry, have taken their involvement to the next level by premiering their first-ever collection of couture designs – the Ashton Anderson line – at this year’s event, which celebrates its fifth year in existence. “Steven and I have worked on tons and tons of photo shoots, as well as television and runway shows, so we’ve always been around fashion,” asserts Ashton, the co-owner of La Posh Salon in Clearwater
who doesn’t claim to be a fashion designer, but rather a fashion enthusiast. “We’ve always discussed evening gowns as something we love. And this just seemed like a natural next step!” So this spring, Ashton and Anderson began sketching their ideas. And, they worked with a seamstress to bring 14 of their varied designs to life. “Stephen and I think differently about dresses; and you can probably tell which October 2012
ones are my designs and which are his,” states Ashton, who finds inspiration in things like architecture, while Anderson prefers more classic silhouettes like those found in Old Hollywood. “We wanted to show beautiful gowns that women could actually wear to special events. And we worked on these dresses for what seemed like forever! We spent hours and hours even sewing the dresses ourselves!” In the end, Ashton and Anderson created an wide-ranging collection of 11 showstopping gowns that wowed the crowd at Tampa Bay Fashion Week and left pair overwhelmed with emotion. “We wanted to cry. And we probably did,” says Ashton with a laugh. “I woke up the next morning almost depressed, and I texted Steven saying, ‘Okay, what do you want to do now?’ This was just a fun thing, something we just wanted to try www.PanacheVue.com
our hand at. And it turned into something people loved!” So now that they’ve managed to steal the show with their first collection of eye-catching evening gowns, Ashton and Anderson definitely see more fashion in their future. “For the next line, we’ll probably do something more cohesive,” pronounces Ashton. “This collection was more everywhere. It worked out because we used
a similar color palette, and that’s how we pulled the line together. But next time we’ll merge our ideas a little more.” If this first attempt is any indication, Ashton and Anderson are well on their way to becoming the next big thing in fashion. And it may not be too long before you spot Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez or Sarah Jessica Parker on the red carpet in an Ashton Anderson original.

T
hat trite but true expression- “put your best foot forward” encapsulates the importance of curb appeal. Not only does your home’s exterior reflect upon its inhabitants but, given the dismal state of real estate values, it also can impact the value of your investment as well as that of your neighbors. Take a walk around the block, arrive at your own address and then… stand back and take it all in just as a passerby or arriving visitor might do. You know of course, while waiting for you to answer the door, a visitor has nothing better to do than notice your front door, your entrance and your landscaping (including those weeds you keep ignoring)! The curb appeal of any structure is a composite of details that are often overlooked. So let’s start at the curb. Is the grass not only healthy and mowed but also neatly edged. Is the landscaping scale appropriate to the scale of your home and does it frame rather than block the architecture? A ginormous magnolia or towering palm, while spectacular, can overwhelm a smaller structure. Are the types of plantings appropriate to the style of your home? An English garden’s charm is totally lost on a Mediterranean design. Look at the home’s support structures. Are the AC units, pumps, filters and other mechanicals carefully hidden behind wall, fences or shrubbery- or are they standing out there like proverbial sore thumbs? Is your driveway cracked or moldy? Are the eaves and roofing materials showing mildew or is the painted/stained finish on your home fading or peeling? Maybe it is time to call in the pros. Does your home offer a walkway from the street to the front door…preferably one that curves softly through your landscape? Once your visitor arrives at that door, what is waiting there? If there are dead bugs, cobwebs, dust and fingerprints gracing your entrance….yuck! Is the front entry protected from weather by a porch or generous overhang? If not, an attractive awning would shade, protect and welcome your guests. Door bells, address plates, outdoor lighting, and mailboxes are opportunities to express your personality but they should be cohesive with the design of your home.

If you have a fountain or water feature at your entrance, yea! But please, please, please- hide the pumps and electrical wiring involved in the magic! If you can add a garden seat, porch swing, potted plants (but not the dead kind), birdbath, large landscape rocks, do it! These touches,
Cheryl Perotti when selected to match your décor, will only add to the welcoming charm of your home. If your front door is rather standard, you might punch it up with a new paint color like wine red, forest green, blueberry or gloss black. Creating structural interest can be as simple as adding a header or cornice to the doorway or replacing plate glass with a stained glass creation. An overlooked piece to the composite is
the welcome mat. Again, it should reflect the scale and style of your home as well as being in good condition and clean, not a host for dead leaves and dirt. Lastly, do you enjoy hanging a seasonal wreath on your entry door? Okay, great! But, as you embrace the colors of the season, don’t ignore the color scheme of your home. For autumn, a house painted in white with shades of burgundy will not be complemented by yellow and orange decorations. Instead, a wreath of burgundy with touches of orange, white and gold would be perfect! Conversely, a home painted in shades of gold should not be wearing purely pastel spring wreaths. However n arrangement of gold and ivory flowers with touches of pink, periwinkle blue or lavender would be beautiful. So, bottom line, scrutinize your home’s exterior as you do yourself. You would probably not make a public appearance in torn, stained or unmatched attire, with uncombed hair, bad breath, underwear showing (ok, I guess that depends on your age and genre) or smelly armpits. Well guess what, your home is an extension of your public persona… which is why curb appeal matters! Cheryl Perotti Fountainhead Design

End the Silence, Stop the Cycle BY AUDREY MABREY
T
he dangers and effects of domestic violence are way beyond what most people realize. You see, there are no prejudices in relationships where people are consumed by control and obsession. It doesn’t matter if you live in the suburbs or the projects, if you are Hispanic or Caucasian, or if you are a Christian or an Atheist. In fact it does not matter if you are a drug dealer or a police officer. It is imperative for this country to wake up and start understanding that we are at war at home. We are losing more people to domestic violence than soldiers to war. From 2001-2011 there were 1241 combat related deaths caused by the most recent war. If you divide that by ten you would find that approximately 124 soldiers are dying per year. In 2010 there were 180 domestic violence related murders in the state of Florida alone. It is naïve to think or say that it would never affect you or your family because it very well could and if you are a woman or a child there is a greater chance that it will. Domestic violence is a vicious cycle. It can begin with the parents and violently trickle down to the children and even the grandchildren. I have been affected by domestic violence in more ways than one. The terror of my relations with it began as a child. My mother endured many years of abuse from my biological father and my brother’s biological father. We often believe that our children are too young to realize what is happening in their own homes but this is simply untrue. By the time my brother was eight he was already associating the bad in him to his father and the good in him to our mother. By the age of nine he was responsible for taking care of me after school until my mother
www.PanacheVue.com
could return home from her two jobs. I never imagined that he would ever hurt me, until he did. He did terrible things such as locking me in the closet in the dark and leaving me there for hours. On one occasion I still carry the vivid memory of him holding a butcher knife to my throat and threatening to use it. At the age of twenty my brother was convicted of double homicide and sentenced to death row. This is a prime example of how an innocent child who once witnessed abuse, became the abuser, and then ultimately murdered two innocent people. Once again, if you think that it doesn’t affect you, you are wrong. Unfortunately for me, my experience with my brother would not be the last time I experienced domestic violence. By the age of twenty I found a wonderful man who really had his life together, or so I thought. He was a NYC detective and a father of two. He took a real liking to me, as I did to him. We started dating, got engaged within the first two years, and began trying to have a baby. By 2008, we were married with our second son on the way. When 2009 came around our relationship had become very different. He had a gambling addiction and was a compulsive liar. I knew that if he did not have his priorities straight by now he never would, so I made the decision to divorce him. We had an agreement to live together until December so I could save the money I needed to move out with our children. A few weeks after moving into my new apartment, I decided to stop by his house in between school and work one day, not knowing he was there. After setting my backpack, keys, and phone down on the table I went for a jog. Upon my return, I opened the front door to find him naked and
End The Silence on Domestic Vi o l e n c e shaved with a butcher knife. He charged at me with full speed and forced me into the garage. Over the span of about five minutes, he attempted to rape me with a knife to my throat, hit me in the head with a hammer four times and then ultimately set me on fire with gasoline and a lit candle. He was convicted and is serving a life sentence. Please take the time to think about the effects of domestic violence in our community and even your own home. You may have done everything right but things can still go wrong. It may not happen to you but what if I was your daughter and what if my children were your grandchildren. Be wise and be informed. Spread the news. Pay attention to your children and their relationships. Warn your daughters. Raise your sons to be real men. Consciously teach your children the morals that will create a better world. Most importantly, know that, “We must become the change we want to see”- Mahatma Gandhi If you or anyone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please call Florida Hotline: 1-800-500-1119 PANACHE VUE’ 25

T
he 49th annual Art Harvest will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 3 & 4 at Highlander Park in Dunedin. Art Harvest is a fine art festival featuring over 200 artists from around the country, produced by the Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin, Inc. This year’s Featured Artist is Susan Gott. She has worked in glass for 30 years and specializes in cast glass to create one-of-akind sculptures. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in glass from Kent State University; Bachelor’s from Radford University and studied glass at Pilchuck, Haystack, Arrowmont, Penland Schools. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and her work can be found in several galleries and in both private and corporate collections Her work embodies an interest in mythological imagery, symbolism, and philosophies from historic and ancient cultures. She loves to travel and is intensely interested in ancient civilizations, symbols of ritual art, ancient myths and how they connect us, most deeply, with our own nature and our place in this world. The resulting glass, with primitive qualities and metaphors, are a visual representation of the cycles of life. The archetypal images that emerge explore spirituality, existence, humor, love, magic, dualities and the beauty of life. The human form is a vessel for her connection to Spirit. The elements of this ancient, visual language have become enmeshed in her thought and in her art as she creates a new mythos in glass. Susan has created a piece specifically for Art Harvest. Art Harvest admission is free. Parking is $5 at Highlander Park and $3 at the nearby Dunedin High School with an approx. ½ mile

health
Empowering Ourselves Through Better Choices,One Step At A Time
I
t is no secret that our country is facing tremendous financial challenges, and just as we Consider the best course to improve and prosper, a deeper and more personal scenario Surfaces with dreaded consequences, Our health. For it is known that all may be lost but if you got your health, you have opportunities and are blessed. Our health and that of our families, communities are being taxed by a relentless and aggravating Obesity epidemic . In 1990 there were only five States in the Country that had Obesity rates of 15% or more, today no state in the country has less than 20 % . In Florida we have 26.6 % obesity according to the CDC, US obesity trends USA . Today the statistics tell us that two out of every three persons is overweight ( BMI greater than 25) and one out of every three is Obese ( BMI of 30 or more), with Hispanic and black populations having even worst figures. The percentages for both sexes also worsen as the population ages . The real shocker is that the obesity rates are projected to double in the next thirty years, with the figures for our children now indicating that one out of every three children is obese. While there are many reasons that we could discuss as to the reasons why? Including Genetics, cultural, social, governmental, etc, the fact is that we have a Clinical condition which has dysfunctional hormonal presentations, most notably insulin resistance which progresses to metabolic syndrome and Diabetes. This creates an inflammatory process which aside from giving us bigger waists and hips propagates a multitude of associated medical conditions. To illustrate here is a short list of medical conditions associated with increase weight and Obesity that I have gathered from a pool of scientific and medical journals: A) hypertension, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance where each factor independently increase the risk for heart disease. B) Strokes; for each unit increase in BMI the
likelihood of a hemorrhagic stroke increase by 6% and an ischemic stroke by 4% C) Pulmonary dysfunction is increased with increased weight, as BMI increase so does the likelihood of Asthma. Obstructive sleep apnea is
César A. Lara, M.D. present in 90% of those patients seeking Bariatric surgery and most people with sleep apnea have BMI of 30 or more. E) Alzheimer’s dementia risk at age 70 is increased by 36% for each BMI unit above 25. F) A large amount of data now shows a connection between Obesity and cancer, including colon cancer and Breast cancer . According to the National Cancer Institute 30 % of cancer deaths are attributable to dietary factors . So with all these factual information excess weight is by far one of the most life threatening and disease causing problems of our times. The current economic impact on our economy is $270 BILLION per year. On the other hand, unlike other problems to which we feel powerless to change, the problem
of excess weight and obesity gives each of us an opportunity to significantly effect and change. The power to effect lies not in some expensive treatment or procedure but in a conscientious decision to take responsibility and charge of our health and learn to make improved and wise choices in what we allow into our mouths. We must be the attentive guards of what we buy and feed ourselves and our loved ones. For as Hippocrates said “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Keep Vigilant for as our society has changed the way food is mass produced and supplied, we must recognize that in an appetizing and seductive delicacy could be our poison. Recognizing and appreciating that food is Joy, and is associated with great memories of fun, family and friends, the goal needs to be to attain a sense of Balance to our nutrition and Lifestyle. It is my opinion that our culture of high carbs and low fat has led us to a critical state and to take our health back we must focus, visualize and create a healthier lifestyle and empower our daily lives by learning to make better choices. These would include eliminating or significantly reducing Refined sugars, grains and starches. These hardly give our bodies any satiety and promote high insulin surges which is at the root of the problem. In its place opt for low glycemic fruits, vegetables and whole grains which give your body an increase sense of satiety. Balance your three meals with adequate amounts of protein And I would encourage a few healthy snacks. Recognize that good fats are good for you and necessary to help you build healthy cells and also play a major role in keeping one satisfied. So as bad as it is, as long as you have your health anything is possible, so give yourself the power and visualize and believe in a healthier you, and start today by making better choices. Q: What is the DRX9000? A: The DRX 9000 is a state of the art machine that allows us to perform spinal decompression in the comfort of our offices.
With his state of the art DRX9000, Dr. Carl Conforti is changing the lives of people who experience the following:
Q: What kind of conditions do you treat with your spinal decompression? A: The DRX9000 allows us to treat quite a few conditions. We have both neck and back decompression, so we treat for neck pain, sciatic pain, lower back pain, auto injuries, sports injuries, bulging and herniated discs, and many other injuries.
• Back pain due to sciatica • Sleepless nights • Back or neck injury as the result of an accident • Numbness in your hands or toes
Q: How do you determine if someone is a candidate for your treatment process? A: In our candidate assessment we review MRI’s, x-rays, and we utilize our computerized spinal exam (EMG) to evaluate the problem. After reviewing all of the tests, we discuss medical history and the complexity of the issues.
• Degenerative disc disease • Herniated and bulging discs • Relapse of neck or back pain following surgery
Q: So once you decide that someone is a candidate, what can they expect next? A: Once we have determined that someone is a candidate for the spinal decompression treatment, we lay out a treatment plan and start treatment as soon as possible. Many times we can start the patient that week, and sometimes even that day! With the treatment plan in mind, we start the spinal decompression and our other treatments that we use alongside the spinal decompression to ensure that our patients get optimal results!
• Spinal stenosis
Q: Do the treatments hurt? A: No, not at all. In fact, many of our patients fall asleep during the treatment process. Others choose to read books and listen to music. It is actually a very relaxing treatment.
The treatment process does not involve any surgery or painful recovery and provides a PERMANENT solution to neck and back pain to patients throughout the Tampa Bay area.
Q: What is your success rate with this treatment? A: As opposed to traditional surgery, which is about 50% success, our treatment process is successful over 80% of the time. Our careful attention to specific needs and our full in office treatment process allows our patients to be back enjoying their lives pain free and full of life!

rowing up, I never had mac’n’cheese from a box, nor fried chicken, or meatloaf, or casseroles, or anything out of a can. At home, my mom cooked every night: Pasta fagioli, fritatta, meatballs, and fish on Fridays including calamari and bacalao (salted cod). We ate calves liver with sautéed onion and bacon, stuffed peppers, linguine with white clam sauce, mussels, and eggplant parmesan (my favorite). As an Italian-American family, food was a huge part of our lives. I am the second of five children, and we shared our home with both of my grandmothers at different times, and with my aunt who moved in after losing her husband in WWII. Together, we’d begin discussing Saturday and Sunday dinners by Tuesday, and everyone was involved in making the food. With the New York Times food section spread out on the table, my siblings and I would scan recipes for new ideas. On Saturday morning we would walk to the local market where the butcher knew us by name, choose our cuts of meat or fish, and watch as they wrapped them in paper and loaded them in a pickup truck with the rest of our groceries for delivery to our home. Then we were free to walk on to the next destination, the Italian market, where sausages hung on strings, prosciutto was sliced from the leg, and cheese was displayed in large wheels or scooped fresh from vats of mozzarella. Today, you might call a market like this gourmet or artisanal, but that’s just the way
everyone did things. Food was made by hand, by people who loved the food and loved each other. Saturday and Sunday evening dinners were events, and all of my mother’s cousins were invited to join. We’d pour Italian wine and everyone was allowed a sip – even the kids – as long as it was around the table and in the spirit of pairing with food. And we always had a salad, with Romaine lettuce and tomato, maybe some gorgonzola or parmesan, dressed with red wine vinegar and olive oil (I never saw a bottle of French or Ranch dressing in our home). Desserts were not “a given.” Sometimes we had dessert, sometimes we didn’t, but one of our favorite desserts was zabaglione (a very light custard) made with marsala wine or prosecco, which we whipped up over a propane burner, and served with sweet summer strawberries or white peaches. As adults, with so much of our focus on health and losing weight, I think many of us lose out on the vital human experience of sharing food with those we love. It’s like we can’t enjoy our food if we want to fit into our jeans. As a chef and nutritionist, I’ve made it my mission to develop recipes that don’t sacrifice flavor, so everyone can enjoy them. This weekend, make Saturday or Sunday night an event that you, your kids, your friends, and your waistline will love by trying out my Eggplant Lasagna recipe on the Intelligent Gourmet blog.
