TO ALLEVIATE THE PAST AND PRESENT, TO ALIGN THE FUTURE, AND TO PROVIDE WHOLE HEALTH FAMILY CHIROPRACTIC CARE.

OUR MISSION:

ALLERGY SUFFERERS SEEK ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT Currently in the United States there are 44 million (1 out of 5) Americans suffering from allergies which accounts for 20% of the population. An allergy is an adverse immune system reaction to a substance that is normally considered harmless to the human body. As this allergen enters the body it triggers an adverse immune system response. The medical approach to allergies uses anti-histamines (Benadryl, Clarinex, and Allegra), decongestants (Zytec-D, Sudafed, and Pseudoephedrine), immunotherapy and even steroids (Flonase, Flovent, Prednisone, and Advair). Not only can these medications be very dangerous they have been known to cause drowsiness, chronic sleep trouble, shaking, blurred vision, irregular heartbeat, diabetes, osteoporosis,

growth suppression and even liver and heart damage. In 2006 after disturbing Research found Advair may contribute to 5,000 deaths per year, the FDA prompted a “black box” warning the highest caution level to Advair. The symptoms associated with allergies are not the result of a lack of drugs in your system they are the result of your body not functioning properly. In most cases the brains messages going to the immune system and respiratory system are being interfered with. Our approach at Conforti Chiropractic will evaluate your spine and Nervous system with state of the art technology to determine if you have nerve interference. If nerve supply is diminished it must be resorted for the body to heal at 100%. Along with restoring maximum nerve supply there are customized nutrition and detoxification workshops to teach you how to minimize your allergies and maximize your health. Source: Maximized Living

Giving Thanks & Giving Back You Get More Than You Give

I

Larry Lieberman, D.D.S.

love this time of the year when Thanksgiving reminds us to take on an attitudeof gratitude. In our busy, stress filled world it’s necessary and re-freshing to stop and appreciate those people and things in our life that make our life better. My loving family, dear friends, loyal and hard working staff and wonderful patients, all give me reason to feel

blessed everyday. I feel so lucky to have chosen a profession that allows me to use my know- ledge and skills to enhance the lives of so many people and the ability to give back to those in need. One of the most rewarding aspects of being in the dental profession is the chance to make a difference in someone’s life. Whether it’s giving someone back their confidence through a new smile or simply letting someone know that their health is important and that we care about them. It makes no difference what profession you are in, there is no greater feeling than helping someone in need and giving back. The expression, “you get far more than you give” really is quite true! Several years ago a colleague of mine asked me and another dentist to help create a dental clinic for underserved and low income adults. Since the creation of Gulf Coast Dental Outreach hundreds of indviduals have been given hope and dental care. Seeing the smiles of those we have helped and volunteering with many other dentisits in our community has been a highlight in my life! Last year after reading about a young woman

brutally attacked in a domestic violence incident, myself and several other dentists began treatment to help restore this woman’s smile and self esteem. After being stabbed 32 times, it has been a joy helping Melissa get back joy in her life. Now an advocate for The Haven, Melissa says she is “thankful and grateful for all of the doctors who helped to rebuild her smile and her life.” Giving back is a family affair. My wife, Debbie has a passion for children. She regularly mentors young, at risk girls and has devoted most of her energy to the Pace Center for Girls. The reward of giving girls a positive role model is a wonderful result of all the time she spends with them. Whether it’s through your religious organization, place of business, professional organization or on your own, I urge you to consider giving back. The gift of your time is priceless and brings many rewards back to you. My wife, Debbie and I wish you a joyous and healthy holiday season! Dr. Larry Lieberman

lthough Summer doesn’t seem over yet here in Florida, Fall trends are already in full swing. During the summer we saw bright neons, pastels and whiter hues on manicured nails. For the fall we are wanting a darker palette. Rich dark reds and shades of grey are two great options for you nails this season. Charcoal and even deep maroon verging on the edge of black are definitely being seen over all the runways. 3-D accents like diamonds, glitter and lace are a great addition to any color option you choose. So for this fall season, even go very chic with black and keep it simple or accent your ring fingers with an slightly different tone. Remember, manicured nails can be a wonderful accessory to your outfit. For these and more wonderful ideas, call for an appointment with Casi or Judy for all your nail needs and trends. We have picked a winner for our Make Me a Super Model Contest. Look for the winner in the upcoming issue of Panache Vue.

CULTURE & ARTS

TOMÁS MARAIS:

Artist in Exile ON EXHIBIT FROM SEPTEMBER 29 – NOV. 24, 2013 “My work is about daydreams, where the unreal is real.” - Tomás Marais Tomás Marais (1931-2004) was a Cuban-born artist who trained at the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he mastered the printmaking technique of woodcut. He immigrated to Paris, France in the 1964, escaping the Communists who had taken over his native country. He exhibited extensively with the second generation of European surrealist artists before moving to the Tampa Bay area in the 1980s. A prolific artist, Marais worked in a variety of media and his dream-like paintings with their vivid colors reflected his highly personal expression that is often associated with family and friends. The retrospective exhibition includes woodblock prints, paintings and collages dating from the late 1950’s to the beginning of this century and was organized by Ken Rollins, former director of the Gulf Coast Museum of Art. The works have been selected from the collections of the LeepaRattner Museum of Art, the St. Petersburg College Foundation Collection and the holdings of the Marais family.

Held at the Tarpon Springs Yacht Club, this annual fundraiser always draws a crowd for its fabulous buffet of fresh stone crab and shrimp, Greek salad, spanakopita, key lime pie and more! The evening begins with a cash bar and silent auction at 5:30 p.m., with the buffet opening at 6:30 p.m. along with live music by the De Lei’ed Parrots. Generous sponsors for this year’s event include James & Mary Mitchell Avery, Bank of America, Catalina Marketing Charitable Foundation, Colorpages Inc., Frenchy’s Stone Crab Company and Jagged Peak. Tickets $60 advance, $70 day of event. Reservations and information: 727-712-5229.

hether you are 17 or 71, the desire to be desirable never goes away. Certainly, the issues change — from acne to wrinkles, menses to menopause — but the longing to look good remains. Indeed, it’s not vain to want to look as good as you feel. Because clear, radiant skin is a natural outcome of health and well-being, a luminous, eventoned, unblemished complexion is a very precious asset. So what happens when that asset suddenly goes haywire, causing freckles to enlarge and brown splotches to appear overnight? Chances are the culprit may actually be a condition called melasma. Though the true cause of melasma is still not known, most experts agree that hormones and sun exposure are at the heart of the problem. Both trigger the production of excess melanocytes — the cells that produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color — causing a symmetrical darkening of the complexion, usually concentrated on the upper cheeks and forehead. It is up to 10 times more common in women than men, appearing between the ages of 20 and 40, and while it affects women of all ethnicities, darker complexions tend to have the most persistent forms. Melasma can occur at either the surface level (superficial melasma) or in the deeper layers of skin (dermal or deep melasma), giving it more of a spread-out appearance. While melasma is definitely a very challenging problem to treat, it’s not impossible. Hyperpigmentation has a vari-

ety of causes, but with an array of treatments available, from the tried-and-true to groundbreaking, you can get rid of discoloration for good. Chemical peels and light treatments are slightly more aggressive procedures that utilize strong chemicals or intense pulsed light (IPL) technology to remove the top layer of discolored skin. Some treatments can be uncomfortable and your skin may be red and flaky for several days. (These effectively treat sun spots on the hands as well as the face.)

Krutika Patel

Ablative lasers like Fraxel help break up stubborn or deep spots by creating microscopic wounds at the dermal layer. Typically skin will turn red, then dark for seven to 10 days before healing and flaking off. Darker skin tones may experience blistering or discoloration, so be sure to consult with your physician about the right treatment for you skin. Topical medications such as hydroquinone and Retinoids are commonly prescribed for melasma. These do not work for all skin types, and they can take up to

six months to visibly lighten. However, new to the market is a prescription-only melasma cream by Trinity Medical Pharmacy. Custom compounded by a highly trained pharmacist in Trinity’s local, state-of-the-art, PCAB accredited laboratory and pharmacy, this melasma cream combines Hydroquinone and Tretinoidwith with a groundbreaking technology that delivers faster, more visible results. Since the cream is compounded at the time of order, it has no preservatives and is paraben-free, and as a prescription, it’s covered by many insurances. For long term success, the most effective treatments combine laser treatments with topical medications like Trinity’s Melasma Cream. No matter what protocol you follow, sunscreen has never been more important. With melasma, it’s important to wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen (blocking both UVA and UVB rays) - one with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Wear your sunscreen every day, even cloudy days. And be vigilant. Skipping even one day can undo all of the melasma treatments you’ve undergone thus far. Once you find a regimen that works for you, stick with it—even if it requires a lifetime of maintenance— to prevent your discoloration from ever returning. n

Candy Girl

I

am honored to take on the position of The Fashion Editor at Panache Vue’ and looking forward to sharing my style with its wonderful readers. I first worked with Panache back in January 2012, when one of my creations (golden Goddess Dress) was featured on the cover and an article written by the talented creative writer, Tom Castaneda. Often the question is what is your inspiration? So, I introduce “Candy Girl” my latest collection inspired by a recent trip to Paris where I indulged in French macaroons. Yup! French Macaroons in every flavor and in every color. Pistachio, Raspberry, and Blackberry…. Oh Joy Paris!!! This collection was shot by the very talented Fox Harvard Photography. To my wonderful readers and followers, I will bring you a wide range of information from what’s hot in fashion this season; makeups must haves, how to create a runway look for less, and hair trends. I am also delighted to work with our own Tampa Bay new and upcoming designers as well as small fashion boutiques within the area. As the runways are making a big impact on decorating trends, expect to see what’s hot of the runways that translate into your home décor. Stay tuned… in the meantime need more fashion advice, interior décor tips or inspiration? n Follow me Website: www.houseofdali.com Instagram: @houseofdali Facebook: www.facebook.com/dalifashiondesigner Pinterest: www.pinterest.com/houseofdali Twitter: twitter.com/HouseofDali E-mail: dali@panachevue.com

She is also a Real Estate Agent operating in the Tampa Bay area. Dali’s arrival to the fashion industry has been making numerous headlines; however designing is nothing new for this NY native. She recalls her childhood’s obsession with fashion magazines, and with the help of a pair of scissors, she would cut various designs to mix and match and ultimately transform her bedroom walls into the latest fashion show. The days she went fabric shopping with her mother gave her an early perspective on quality variation and how the same design can be completely altered due to fabric choice. Dali’s fashion line is for the woman who still maintains her social status and is not afraid to make a fashion statement. She feels that there shouldn’t really be a target age or group for her line, because she feels that women are sexy and edgy at any age. Dali was featured on FOX13, What’s Hot Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Pulse, Vocess International, Creative Loafing, tbttimes, St. Pete Times, Panache Vue, Remark Magazine, Libertine Magazine, Envie, and was Semi Finalist for “Fashion Star” NBC. www.PanacheVue.com

Since opening her first office in 2006, Dr. O’Neal supports children’s charities and law enforcement charities through organizations such as The Pinellas Sheriff’s Office, the Fraternal Police Organizations and The Florida State Troopers. of joy on a smiling happy patient who has just witnessed the change of a “NuSmile” smile make over or a long suffering floppy denture patient smiling, excited and happily relating eating an apple or steak naturally for the first time in over ten years”. Dr. O’Neal regularly helps deserving patients who cannot afford needed dentistry. In her spare time, she enjoys caring for her granddaughters and family. She is an avid skier and enjoys a walk on the beach at sunset. Dr. O’Neal shared with us that she owes her success to her parents. “My father and mother taught me the value of education and of being a reliable hard working doctor. Teachers and mentors such as Dr. Dickerson of the Las Vegas Institute of Advanced Dentistry who helped me understand the full mouth function as related to the technical and cosmetic aspects of helping my patients, Dr. Misch who taught me the technical and clinical aspects of implant placement. Dr. Ferguson who taught me the same and the practical clinical aspects of implant surgery as he assisted me in surgery when doing my initial implant surgeries many years ago”. n

ESTROGEN - Friend Or Foe that hormones had been shown to increase the risk of heart disease and breast cancer. Unfortunately, the media does not know how to interpret medical literature. The study they were reporting on was the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) and it showed that the combination of synthetic estrogen (Premarin, which is derived from the urine of pregnant mares) plus Provera caused this. It was subsequently interpreted by the media that it applies to all hormones. Natural hormones, or those that are bioidentical in structure and form to what a woman’s body produces naturally do not carry the the same risk factors. The hormones in the study were synthetic and of those, Provera was clearly the culprit as evidenced in the WHI study and other studies prior and subsequent to that study. Natural hormones, or bioidentical hormones are not the same as synthetic hormones. While every treatment has a risk and benefit profile, the benefits of natural Estrogen far outweigh the risks. If you are in menopause, consider putting back into your body the same natural hormones to not only help you with the symptoms of menopause but just as important, improve your quality of life by preventing the deterioration that occurs from the loss of estrogen. Reviewing all the benefits of estrogen, friend or foe is not even a question. Estrogen may just be your new best friend! n

It’s Time To Start

OUTDOOR LIVING

PANACHE VUE’

H

ey everyone, Zac here again with Ultra Custom Pools and Outdoor! Well the kids are back to school and your thinking about that Outdoor Living and Pool project again... My good friends at Panache Vue’ Magazine have asked me to enlighten their readers as to the best times to approach these types of projects. My extensive experience in project management and execution has taught me that the best time to “start” is RIGHT NOW! This does Zac Pease | Owner/Designer not mean you need to run out and buy a grand outdoor living space tomorrow. I’m simply emphasizing that planning is an essential to the client truly getting a product that you will love for the rest of your time in your home. A great place to start is viewing outdoor living spaces and pools online through design sites such as Kudzu. These sites will help you get a few ideas together that you can present to your design/build firm. This also provides your designer with insight into your style and the direction they should be taking your project. From there, ask yourself what your completion goals are. If you are planning on swimming in your elaborate pool by Christmas, be honest with the firm you select about those goals. More often than not, your “In Demand” firms will be honest right back setting expectations that you can count on. Look closely at your schedule and the upcoming events in your life. Large construction projects are exciting but can be a bit stressful and often a lot of decisions will need to be made so be sure you are prepared for that. The next thing you want to do is research some companies, be sure they are licensed and fit into the project goals. Multi- purpose outdoor living spaces and pools need to be handled by truly elite members of that industry. Schedule a time to meet with a designer and be sure there is no obligation to buy. Ultra Custom Group designers do not charge design fees, there is no measure of time that is too much to work through a design with our clients to ensure the design is exactly what you want. We will bring an unsurpassed level of knowledge and creativity to every project. The holiday season is right around the corner, let’s start planning today. Call me for a design session 813-900-5595.

ENVIRONS

COME ON BABY, LIGHT MY FIRE... BY: CHERYL PEROTTI FOUNTAINHEAD DESIGN

T

he next words to that classic rock song by The Doors: Try to set the night on fire! And since mankind discovered fire, we have been doing just that -attracted to its warmth, fascinated by its dancing flames and mesmerized by its sheer magic. Whether its a bonfire, fire pit, chimenia, patio torch, or open hearth, we gravitate towards their allure. This makes them an obvious gathering place or focal point for both our interior and exterior decors. With the advent of technology through out the millenniums, our fireplace options have evolved drastically to include various forms of fuel - forgoing the antiquated, more noxious choices used by primitive societies for survival. To begin with, the traditional wood burning fireplace is usually encased by rock, stone, or brick in casual settings and showcased by elegant mantels and surrounds in more formal areas. It employs dampers and uses hardwoods that burn cleaner and more fragrantly. Gas is

32

PANACHE VUE’

an option to logs, and it eliminates the work involved in supplying and cleaning a wood burning system. The simulated logs can be extremely realistic, complete with “ashes” and charring, and offer remote control convenience along with heat control, which in Florida means potential prolonged usage. In addition to these built in options that require chimneys are fireplaces that can be added as easily as hanging a painting on a wall or placing furniture in a room. The style options include more traditional styles plus a full range of contemporary fireplaces that are as sculptural as they are functional. Burning bio-ethanol fuel, which can be purchased at any home hardware store, they have the added benefit of emitting no ashes, soot, or smoke. When using either gas or alternative fuel, glass and stone are beautiful mediums with which to replace the traditional logs within the firebox. Traditional fireplaces usually have stone, brick or tile surrounds with raised hearths and are often framed by pilaster style wood legs and topped by wood mantles and mantle shelves. Contemporary designs will often forgo the mantel shelves, trim features and/or raised hearths for a sleeker, less detailed approach. Adding a marble or tile surround and changing the style and details of the legs, mantel and shelf are easy ways to update an existing fireplace. Fire pits can range from elaborate built-ins to portable metal bowls and

can also be achieved with wood, gas or bio-ethenol fuel. When using alternatives, consider combining a water feature with flames called “fire fountains”. They are truly captivating, with the sound, sparkle and movement of water merged with the fantasy of fire. Another simple option, the chimenia, which are like portable fire pits with chimneys, can also add a warmth and focal point to any outdoor living space. There is something natural and enticing about gathering around the flames to relax or visit with friends and family. And don’t forget, in Florida, using flaming torches, lanterns, and gel pots will not only add atmosphere to your garden room, but can be fueled by citronella emitting fuels to discourage those nasty little mosquitoes from joining the party. That is a definite win-win in my book! Whatever your project entails, try to think beyond the box when choosing the design and materials for your primal gathering place. Softly curved lines that replicate the adobe style, rugged rocks that mimic the walls of a cave, glass, mirror, and metal that allow your design to float within a sculptural medium, or mosaic tiles, faux painting and wood carvings that add romance to your surround are just some of the options to consider. Once you have considered your space, style, and convenience options, just let your imagination go wild...allow it to light your fire! n

Does “RESALE” make you feel like a Visitor in your own home? BY GENE MCDONALD “THE COUNTERTOP ROCK STAR”

I

remember not too long ago many people I know were buying up houses here in Tampa Bay and flipping them for quick profits. Then when the Home buying crash hit these House flippers were devastated as REAL Licensed realtors grinned. I myself was amazed how easy it was to buy a house, paint it beige and make a quick profit. (BTW I wish we could ban the color beige from over taking Florida) LOL I myself am happy to announce to my Panache Vue readers that many here in Tampa Bay are remodeling their homes for the long haul. I am so happy to see and hear that. Shout it loud Tampa Bay!! Why move? Let’s Improve!! Ok I may be excited a bit, but I feel this way, totally refreshing to hear news like that. I recently built this stylish custom Bar & Kitchen for a game room in St. Petersburg. They chose Jade Glass bar tops and Kirei wood custom cabinetry. Now when they were choosing colors they actually realized that they will be living in the house not a designer on HGTV, Not a builder, not a realtor, not even me. They realized they will be living in their home to enjoy with friends and family. They chose what makes them happy. Even if my house is not my forever house, I would never let someone pressure me into choosing a color or style because of ‘RESALE”. I’ll even go one step fur-

www.PanacheVue.com

ther and to say if they were going to sell their home, I bet the potential buyer would feel more comfortable buying their home knowing they loved it and was proud to make memories there. When designing your home, or redesigning your home, simply visualize the actual space, structure then Color. Let’s try to bring some excitement into your home; you can still hire wonderful designers. Just because someone is a designer doesn’t mean they are a good fit for you, same with builders, realtors, and kitchen remodelers. There are even designers who are self appointed because they watched The Flipping houses marathon edition on the DIY network last weekend, so be careful. Now let’s talk about PETS, YES PETS!!! I can see the look on your face now if you are a pet lover to be told that you need to remove every little speck of evidence that you own pets. Are there really people out there that are living in their own home without pets because somebody told them about resale? Say it isn’t so! If you want pet doors and Custom built in pet feeders, by all means do so; your pets bring joy to your home as well. Now if you disagree with the TV realtor or designer when it comes to pets, why listen to them on other furnishings? I love the smile on a customers face when they find out I can make them a pet

feeder that matches their kitchen. Express yourself in your home. Worrying about what a future potential person will do is the task for a fool. Do not compromise the enjoyment of your home for someone who will not live there. Be bold and unleash that inner designer in YOU!!! Have lots of fun and enjoy life to the fullest. Think of your favorite colors, your own space saving ideas for personal items. How do you like to cook in the kitchen?, How do you like your home office?, How you like your wrap around decks?, Your outdoor kitchens? And most importantly, think of all the family, friends and pets that will participate in your home. Do that and you will not feel like a visitor in your own home? May the best times in your past become the worst times in your future. n Gene McDonald, aka “The Counter Top Rock Star” is the President of Refresh Interiors Design.com. SPEAK UP & SPEAK OUT!

E

BY AUDREY MABREY

very year as October approaches we all seem to be looking forward to celebrating something. While some of us are excited for the start of the holiday season or thrilled to honor Breast Cancer Awareness month, Melissa Dohme is ready to utilize every platform to speak up and speak out against domestic violence! It was early morning when Melissa was awakened by repeated phone calls from her ex-boyfriend Robert Burton. Bobby, as she calls him expressed to her that he wanted to stop by her Mom’s house and share one last embrace. This would give him closure from their high school romance and then he would never bother her again. His tears of manipulation, deceit, and guilt were so effective that Melissa reluctantly agreed. Bobby arrived shortly after and as he wrapped his arms around the girl he claimed to once love, he began stabbing her with a switch blade. The third time his hand came down with the blade it entered right above her ear and it was then that she actually felt the knife for the first time. Robert kept stabbing Melissa as he straddled her. Although she was strikingly smaller, she fought back as he continuously stabbed her in her beautiful face. A teenage couple walking through the park found themselves now approaching a desperate girl in need and immediately did all they could to help save Melissa from the monster that they found lurking over her. 911 was dispatched thanks to that frightened but brave young couple and Melissa

www.PanacheVue.com

found herself now desperately trying to get behind her neighbors mailbox after being stabbed 32 times with not one but two knives. She lie there drenched in her own blood and felt herself drifting, so Melissa did the only thing she had enough energy left to do. She was begged her Heavenly Father to spare her life and it was then that Melissa believes God began to align everything perfectly so that despite the fact that she would flat line four times due to the loss of blood and suffer a stroke, she would not only survive but eventually thrive. I had the opportunity of meeting Melissa through another survivor of domestic violence and right I knew she was special. Her spirit absolutely affects everyone she meets because it is one that is shockingly full of love, hope, strength, faith, and joy. Although some people disagreed with Melissa when she expressed her desire to go back to school so soon after her attack that didn’t stop her. She was on a mission to prove to herself and everyone else that Bobby was unsuccessful in trying to take her away her life and her dreams. She had to work a little harder to maintain the level of success that she always had but she went on to graduate with honors. She was also selected to deliver an inspiring speech to her graduating class and was chosen as student of the year! Wow! Recently Melissa had to face Robert in court as the trial was set to begin and nothing would have come as more of a shock then when, at the very last minute he decided to

change his plea from not guilty to guilty. She believes he changed his plea out of fear of facing the truth. Robert’s sentencing hearing is just around the corner and Melissa believes that he should be sentenced to life because he had no value for her life as she screamed, cried, and pleaded for him to stop. Melissa has moved forward in every facet of her life and finding real love is one of them. When she speaks of love she always recites 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. I’m not sure she ever imagined she would fall in love with one of the first responders from that darkened morning but sometimes God is delighted to surprise us. Melissa wants others to know that there were some really trying times in her journey but the pull to help others and get back to her precious life outweighed all of those really tough times. Additionally she wants people to know that if they are in an abusive relationship that they are not alone and that they can come out victorious just as she has. You can follow Melissa on Facebook with her Support Melissa page. If you or anyone you know is in an abusive relationship please call 1-800-599-1119 for help.

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

FALL FOR ART IN

CHICAGO BY ADRIANA GARDELLA

C

hicago is routinely among the top U.S. business travel destinations. But there are even more enticements to stick around and explore once your work is done. Chief among them are the city’s architectural jewels and nearly limitless art offerings. Those who visit during the fall will discover they have arrived at the perfect time -- before temperatures dip precipitously and after the summertime hordes have moved on. In just a weekend it is possible to cover plenty of ground without straying far from the Loop, the city’s historic business center. The River North neighborhood, just

north of the Loop and a short walk across the Chicago River, is a great place to begin your explorations. The district is home to Chicago’s highest concentration of art galleries, plus numerous restaurants and a busy nightlife. Gallery openings, held on Friday nights, are one way to sample the scene. Plot your course after checking the online events calendar offered by Chicago Gallery News, or just head to the district’s center -- Chicago, Superior and Huron streets between LaSalle and Orleans streets -- and start wandering. As dinnertime approaches, you’ll find you’re surrounded by options, including Sumi Robata Bar, a sleek space that focuses on Japanese barbecue. If the weather cooperates, you can savor your cracklycrisp fried chicken with shishito pepper paste while seated in the restaurant’s tranquil garden. Or pull up a barstool at the robata -- a type of Japanese charcoal grill -- to watch owner and former Japonais chef Gene Kato create his edible art behind glass. Begin your next day with the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s 90-minute river

cruise. From the Chicago River you’ll get the inside story on more than 50 of the city’s most striking structures, including the Wrigley Building, Merchandise Mart and Marina City. For landlubbers, the foundation offers tours by foot, trolley, bus, el train and bicycle. When your boat docks you’ll be within a short cab ride -- or a 15-minute walk -- from the Art Institute, one of the city’s cultural treasures. Even if you were so inclined, you couldn’t take in all that the million-square-foot museum offers in one day or perhaps even one week. So set your priorities and make a plan. The Art Institute’s imposing Beaux Arts building, its main entrance framed by two enormous bronze lions, is among the most-photographed Chicago landmarks. Inside the museum you’ll find a permanent collection most well-known for its Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and American paintings. These include works so ubiquitously reproduced that they may seem like old friends: Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks,” Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies,” Vincent van Gogh’s “Self-Portrait” and

Grant Wood’s “American Gothic.” But the museum is also home to art in a range of forms, spanning cultures worldwide and nearly every recorded time period. Just north of the Art Institute sits Millennium Park. The popular meeting place, built to celebrate the millennium, opened behind schedule in 2004. Its 24.5 acres feature several notable works of architecture and public art. At the center sits the Frank Gehry-designed Pritzker Pavilion, a band shell with fixed and lawn seating. Gehry also designed the snakelike pedestrian bridge that crosses Columbus Drive, connecting Millennium Park with Grant Park to the east. Millennium Park’s significant works of public art include London-based artist Anish Kapoor’s visually arresting Cloud Gate, a giant bean-shaped sculpture made of stainless steel polished to create the effect of a distorted mirror that reflects both sky and skyline. Crown Fountain is another must-see in the park. Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, the fountain consists of two 50-foot glass block towers that face each other across a reflecting www.PanacheVue.com

pool. The towers project images of reallife Chicagoans who appear to be spitting water from their mouths gargoyle-style. After a day spent exploring some of Chicago’s architecture and top art destinations, head to your hotel to recharge before dinner. Acme Hotel, located in River North and less than three blocks from Michigan Avenue’s main shopping stretch, is one budget-conscious option with a boutique-hotel feel. Regardless of whether you check in, the hotel’s recently opened Berkshire Room is worth a visit for custom-made cocktails and bar snacks like bison tartare, served in a comfortable, civilized lounge conducive to conversation. Chicago’s art offerings are matched by its continually evolving dining scene. Plan ahead if you want to experience a multicourse tasting menu at Grace in the West Loop, where reservations are accepted two months in advance. Or sample Macanese cuisine at Fat Rice in the Logan Square neighborhood. Line up for a seat at a communal table to find out why this year Bon Apetit magazine named Fat Rice the fourth-best new restaurant in the

United States. Conclude your whirlwind tour of Chicago the next day with a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art, which highlights painting, sculpture, video and film created since 1945. The museum’s sculpture garden overlooks Lake Michigan. n WHEN YOU GO For general tourism information: www. choosechicago.com Chicago Gallery News: www.chicagogallerynews.com Sumi Robata Bar: www.sumirobatabar. com Chicago Architecture Foundation: www. architecture.org Art Institute of Chicago: www.artic.edu Millenium Park: www.cityofchicago.org/ city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/millennium_ park.html Acme Hotel: www.acmehotelcompany.com Grace: www.grace-restaurant.com Fat Rice: www.eatfatrice.com/index2. php#slide-main Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago: www.mcachicago.org PANACHE VUE’
