Ask Andrew Ashton... LaPosh Salon Dear Andrew Ashton, Just curious on the new looks for the fall. I always enjoy changing my makeup to suit the new trends of the season. Pat, Palm Harbor
Andrew Ashton
Dear Pat, For lips in the fall, we typically see red come around again although the red changes tone. This fall, a deep cabarnet red is a great choice. Choose a red with a little richness to it. You can tone down the intensity of the red by applying a clear balm before you apply the red lipstick. For eyes this fall, we are definitely seeing the new ‘Cat Eye’ look. Line the eye using a fine tipped makeup brush with a gel liner or apply with a liquid liner. Using either of those IONS LICATachieve liner techniques willUBhelp a nice curve and TIGE P S E R P HT edge. As far as shadow, we always talk OPYRIG Cflipped-up about a smokey eye but instead of keeping with the natural tones, opt for color like deep greens or purples. Apply to lash line and blend out. Or for a bit more color, blend both green, purples and browns
using iridescent shadows working from the inside of eye to the outside corner. Dear Andrew Ashton, I’ve been hearing a lot about Ombre hair color. I think I know what it is, but could you clear things up for me? Megan, Dunedin Dear Megan, Ombre is a coloring technique that goes darker to lighter. It can be in any color just as long as it goes darker to lighter. In hair coloring we have been taking the root area darker or using your natural color at the base and gradually lighter toward the ends. This coloring technique can be as dramatic as you want meaning from very dark to very light. We have been also adding in pastel tones to the ends to create a more ‘hip’ look. We have seen this color look on celebrities like Drew Barrymore and Sarah Jessica Parker. This is a color technique that we have been having a lot of fun with in the salon.

When Mamma is Happy, Everyone is Happy
O
Dr. Larry Lieberman, DDS
ver the years in our home of 3 active boys my wife, Debbie, kept command central in control by juggling sports, school , social calendars and work. The mantra in our home was “when mamma is happy, everyone is happy”! Today we laugh about it, but moms of today juggle so many family responsibilities and set the tone for the home. Not only do they manage the family lives, they very often put their own needs last making sure everyone else’s needs are met. Many times in our dental office I meet moms who are in desperate need of dental treatment but choose to put their children’s needs first. While this is very important, I would like to encourage those moms to think about the model they are setting for their children and somehow find a way to take care of themselves too. I celebrate these moms and invite them in to our dental office to be treated and pampered. The experience begins the moment you enter our office. Cool, calming, spa colors, a soothing rock waterfall, a coffee bar (that rivals Starbucks) and a warm, smiling face awaits you at check in. Whether you’ve come for your routine hygiene visit or for other dental treatment, your comfort is our prime concern. Using memory foam chair pads, TV and music headphones, sunglasses and a garden view in each treatment room gives you the feeling you’re not in your typical sterile dental office. For those patients who need a bit more “comfort” in a dental environment we offer several additional options. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available to help relieve dental anxiety.
In addition, we are licensed to offer oral and IV sedation, a deeper more relaxing way to get through your dental visit. Very often dental anxiety can be helped simply with calm, soothing music, a dark pair of sunglasses and a caring staff who is attentive to your needs. Of course we are here to meet all of your dental needs – teeth whitening, bonded fillings, veneers, crowns, root canal, dentures, implants and implant restorations- are some of the services we offer. We even have 6 different lasers to make your dental treatment easier, faster and more comfortable. For those busy and with time constraints we can make Cerec crowns in a single visit. To compliment this we also offer BruxZir Solid Zirconia crowns which are stronger and a beautiful alternative to conventional crowns. If you’d like to pamper yourself we can do that too. If your smile isn’t all that you’d like it to be we have many cosmetic options to help. If your teeth aren’t as straight as you’d like them to be we have options to help straighten them. If your appearance is aging faster than you’re ready for we are proud to offer Botox and Dermal Fillers to enhance your appearance. The end of summer also marks our 2nd anniversary in our new office location. Our philosophy has always been and continues to be - to keep our service and approach to excellent patient care a top priority. I am extremely proud of my staff that has helped me to make this a reality. I look forward to answering your questions and to serving any of your dental needs. Larry Lieberman, DDS

Youthful Rejuvenation, Masterful Artistry In today’s competitive world, upon first meeting, people often make snap judgements based on one’s appearance. Remarkably, studies show that even the smallest improvement in a person’s outward appearance manifests in raised self-esteem, improved social skills, and greater occupational success. The exciting field of aesthetic medicine has introduced us to safe, non-invasive solutions that are able to renew, repair, or enhance one’s appearance.
L
ecada Medical Artistry, Tampa, is your one-stop source for non-surgical, effective, anti-aging, aesthetic procedures with little or no downtime. Reduce wrinkles, say goodbye to spider veins, tighten skin with Exilis, marvel at your lunch-time “nose job” or “liquid face-lift, enjoy rejuvenated skin.....well, you get the idea! Recognizing that beauty is more than skin-deep, Lecada’s overall wellness division also provides bio-identical hormone replacement therapy and a proven, sustainable, medically-supervised weight-loss program. Lecada’s full menu of services is designed to help you look and feel your best, resulting in a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. Lecada, established in March, 2010, is owned and operated by Dana Martinez and Leanne Cross, M.D.. Dana has had an extensive career in the aesthetic industry since graduating from the University of South Florida. This varied experience gave her a unique insight into the great amount of people that wanted to pursue cosmetic enhancement but felt it was cost-prohibitive. As CEO and co-founder, Dana’s tireless enthusiasm and passionate creativity made her determined to provide affordable, effective aesthetic services without sacrificing either quality or integrity. Her consistent leadership keeps Lecada running like a well-oiled machine and her attention to the smallest detail provides the warm, personal touch Lecada’s patients have come to expect.
www.PanacheVue.com
Dr. Leanne Cross, M.D., Lecada’s co-founder and chief medical officer shares Dana’s commitment to providing affordable, quality care without compromising ethics. Dr. Cross combines extraordinary skill, experience, and training to address not only the overt, but also the more subtle signs of aging, giving patients a natural, rejuvenated outcome that is difficult to match. This masterful artistry has earned Dr. Cross the prestigious “Best Facial Injectable Award” at the Aesthetic Show in Las Vegas, NV, both in 2011 and 2012. Highly respected amongst her peers for her talent and exemplary standards, Dr. Cross has become known as “the injector to the injectors”. It is not surprising that this award-winning team has made Lecada the “go-to” place in Tampa for the highest quality, yet, cost-effective anti-aging therapies. Their results-driven services and extraordinary customer service has created a phenomenally loyal patient base; 50% of new patients are referred by existing Lecada patients. Surely, there is neither a better demonstration of patient satisfaction, nor a greater compliment. Lecada offers complimentary consultations that are unhurried and honest, giving each patient realistic options and goals customized for each person’s unique needs....and then, they deliver what’s promised. Call 813-874-2332 for an appointment or visit www.lecadatampa.com. Lecada Medical Artistry is conveniently located at 3710 West Azeele St., Tampa, 33607.

“You deserve a break today”
“You deserve a break today” is a slogan made famous by a fast food giant, and yet has a deeper message that each of us can apply to our daily lives. What is this message? It is a reminder that we each have value – that we are important. Stating that we need a break, assumes that most of us take care of responsibilities to others before we take care of ourselves. Many people have received a message throughout their life that they are not worth “self-indulgence”, that they don’t deserve to be pampered. But this message gives us permission to indulge and to pamper ourselves, and it is one that we should consider daily. Let’s consider for a moment, what happens to our bodies when we are so busy taking care of others that we neglect ourselves. Stress is a huge drain on body resources. When we are working too many hours, running kids everywhere, taking care of aging parents or other family, and running a household, we can be sure that sooner or later, the pressures will take their toll and the miraculous machine that is our body, will have some sort of malfunction. This is why taking care of oneself should be paramount in our daily rituals. Unless we care for ourselves, we cannot effectively take care of others in our lives, and the ones we care
about don’t really get the “best” of us. We need to take care of every aspect of ourselves daily: physically, mentally, and spiritually.
César A. Lara, M.D. Physically, we need to honor our body by preparing healthy food. Food is medicine for our body, and is important to our health, mood and energy level. A balanced day of lean proteins and healthy fruits and vegetables will give us the ability to accomplish that to do list.
Our body needs exercise to stay healthy. It can be challenging to add in exercise time, but 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Exercise releases endorphins, which are hormones that make us feel good. We will look and feel better; and that will be reflected throughout your day. For our mental health, a massage or a facial enhances a feeling of well being and helps rejuvenate and re-energize our mind. At home, a soak in a warm tub filled with soft fragrance, or a few scented candles in the room, and some soft music can be your mini-spa. Last, but not least is spiritual self care. Most of us are not trained to tap into our spiritual beings, and it requires some effort. We need to be present with ourselves in everything we do, and this is no easy task. This means to pray and/or meditate as we start our day in order to center ourselves. Meditation can be as simple as taking five minutes to close our eyes and breathe deeply to quiet our physical and mental selves before we face the day. Still crunching time numbers? Do your body and your loved ones a favor, and take care of you. If you take care of the physical, mental and spiritual you, you won’t need “the break today” – although you still deserve it!
César A. Lara, M.D. is a Board Certified family physician and a leading expert in the field of medicine, the treatment of obesity, and weight loss management. For more than 20 years, it has been Dr. Lara’s passion to become a positive force in America’s ever-growing obesity crisis…one patient at a time. Dr. Lara’s dream of helping men and women overcome diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and other chronic conditions related to obesity was realized with the emergence of the César A. Lara, MD; Center for Weight Management as a premier weight loss center in Tampa Bay. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Lara is known for his strong personal faith and his generous contributions to the Tampa Bay community. Dr. Lara regularly appears on television as a medical contributor to Brighthouse Network’s Bay News 9 en Español and WTSP-TV Studio 10. He frequently participates in corporate health fairs promoting an active lifestyle and healthy weight loss options. He is the founder of St. Michael’s Free Clinic and Weight Away Tampa Bay, charitable organizations that provide free medical treatment to those who cannot afford it.

REFLECTIONS ON MAN’S FATE Art by Judith Weinshall Liberman
Reflections on Man’s Fate: The Art of Judith Weinshall Liberman is an exhibition of paintings and textile works drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition includes wall hangings and works on canvas from the artist’s Skulls Series and Genocide Series. Her work focuses on the present state of mankind as well as the relentlessness and enormity of history’s darkest period. On view Saturday, September 8 through Sunday, January 20, 2013

Letters to Sala:
A Young Woman’s Life in the Nazi Labor Camps Letters to Sala: A Young Woman’s Life in Nazi Labor Camps is a treasure trove of documents saved by one young woman during her five year ordeal of internment. The exhibition, a graphic narrative through facsimiles and original materials, provides a remarkable first-hand view of the human drama that unfolded among Jews forced to work as slave laborers during the war. Letters to Sala, curated by Jill Vexler, is an exhibition of the New York Public Library and the French Children of the Holocaust Foundation. Q: What is the DRX9000? A: The DRX 9000 is a state of the art machine that allows us to perform spinal decompression in the comfort of our offices.
With his state of the art DRX9000, Dr. Carl Conforti is changing the lives of people who experience the following:
Q: What kind of conditions do you treat with your spinal decompression? A: The DRX9000 allows us to treat quite a few conditions. We have both neck and back decompression, so we treat for neck pain, sciatic pain, lower back pain, auto injuries, sports injuries, bulging and herniated discs, and many other injuries.
• Back pain due to sciatica • Sleepless nights • Back or neck injury as the result of an accident • Numbness in your hands or toes
Q: How do you determine if someone is a candidate for your treatment process? A: In our candidate assessment we review MRI’s, x-rays, and we utilize our computerized spinal exam (EMG) to evaluate the problem. After reviewing all of the tests, we discuss medical history and the complexity of the issues.
• Degenerative disc disease • Herniated and bulging discs • Relapse of neck or back pain following surgery
Q: So once you decide that someone is a candidate, what can they expect next? A: Once we have determined that someone is a candidate for the spinal decompression treatment, we lay out a treatment plan and start treatment as soon as possible. Many times we can start the patient that week, and sometimes even that day! With the treatment plan in mind, we start the spinal decompression and our other treatments that we use alongside the spinal decompression to ensure that our patients get optimal results!
• Spinal stenosis
Q: Do the treatments hurt? A: No, not at all. In fact, many of our patients fall asleep during the treatment process. Others choose to read books and listen to music. It is actually a very relaxing treatment.
The treatment process does not involve any surgery or painful recovery and provides a PERMANENT solution to neck and back pain to patients throughout the Tampa Bay area.
Q: What is your success rate with this treatment? A: As opposed to traditional surgery, which is about 50% success, our treatment process is successful over 80% of the time. Our careful attention to specific needs and our full in office treatment process allows our patients to be back enjoying their lives pain free and full of life!

fter watching the Olympics, I think we are all in awe over the magnificent accomplishments and dedication displayed by these world class athletes. It may have even inspired some of us to go to the gym or pick up running. Exercising is important to maintaining physical and mental wellbeing, but it is often the plunge back to intense training when things begin to hurt the most. Stephen A. Hanff, M.D. Overuse injuries include a number of different conditions that may affect the shoulders, elbows, hips, knees or ankles when training levels exceed the body’s ability to heal. For example, a common affliction that affects new runners, or runners who rapidly increase their mileage, is iliotibial band syndrome. This pain is felt as a burning or aching pain on the outside of the knee that typically occurs after finishing a run. This is caused by a long tight band in the thigh that can also cause hip pain, or bursitis of the hip. Another common overuse injury is runner’s knee, which is an irritation behind the knee cap. A common shoulder overuse injury is subacromial bursitis, which is pain that occurs in the front and top of the shoulder in overhead athletes. Playing basketball or swimming may aggravate this. Two common elbow afflictions are tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, which affect the outside and inside of the elbow respectively. Whatever the ailment is, it is important to assess your exercise routine to make sure you are not increasing intensity too quickly. For running, a good rule to remember is to not increase mileage more than 10% per week. It is also important to warm up and stretch the joints and muscle groups used for each activity. A knowledgeable friend or personal trainer can be an invaluable resource when embarking upon a new exercise routine. There are many gyms that are home to exercise classes and social clubs for walking, running, swimming and biking. If an overuse injury does overwhelm your ability to exercise, then trust your orthopaedic surgeon to evaluate and offer advice for a speedy recovery. Most of these injuries involve a period of rest as well as modifying routines. Invasive treatments are rarely necessary, and it is usually knowledge of the condition that can empower one to heal and keep an active lifestyle. Stephen A. Hanff, M.D.

Honest, Current, Visionary
L
ocation, location, location is the cardinal rule of real estate, but in today’s tricky market, location, timing and talent are what define this successful real estate team. Kevin and Jennifer Richards are the visionaries behind Homefront Realty. They met in 1991 in St. Louis, MO. and married in 2004. Both sharing a common interest in real estate, they decided to purchase a few apartment buildings as investment properties. Using their knowledge from maintaining these buildings, they then decided to purchase and renovate a house in need of some TLC…and the rest, as they say, is history. The satisfaction of transforming a run-down property into a home that a new family would love and grow in was extremely motivating. They decided to quit their jobs in 1995 and went full time into real estate as investors. Kevin and Jennifer would purchase the worst house on a street. They invested time and money and applied some good old fashioned elbow grease. Hearing gratitude and appreciation from so many neighbors while they were renovating these homes, made it even more rewarding. They knew they were making a difference in the community. They have bought and sold countless houses over the years. When Kevin’s Dad learned he had lung cancer, this prompted them to sell everything and settle in Dunedin Florida in 2001. During the major decline in the housing market, they saw a lot of their colleagues getting out of the profession. Knowing only the strongest and experienced realtors remained, they saw this as an opportunity to recruit them to their team by starting their own real estate brokerage firm. Homefront Realty is now a thriving local business currently offering professional agents multiple revenue options. Homefront Realty offers realtors something that is unheard of with other brokerages… In addition to extensive training and warm leads for all “traditional” real estate, they have an in house bank negotiation company dedicated to handling all the time consuming bank contacts for their short sale listings. There’s no charge to the agent or their clients for this service. Agents receive their FULL commission. This means the brokerage will handle all the “dirty work” and agents don’t have to be afraid of accepting short sale listings any longer. Kevin and Jennifer don’t want their agents bogged down on the phones with banks when they could be out building their own personal businesses. Kevin and Jennifer “get transactions closed and help clients in a most beneficial way.” Clients appreciate the fact that they never give up and successfully tackle even the most challenging situations. Another philosophy followed by Kevin and Jennifer is that they always place the homeowners’ and agents’ best interest ahead of their own. They truly care about the individuals they serve and leaving a positive impact on the community. Homefront Realty strives to keep on the cutting edge of technology and a number one priority is to keep up with the constant changes that occur in the real estate industry. They fight for their clients and realtors when they get in to a challenging situation. One story from Kevin and Jennifer that seemed to sum things up was a situation regarding an abandoned house in terrible condition in their neighborhood. Kevin contacted the owner and she said she fell behind on payments not knowing what to do. The bank would
www.PanacheVue.com
not work with her. Their in-house company ended up negotiating a complete satisfaction with her lender allowing them to sell it at today’s market value. Within 1 month they were able to sell the house to a person that fixed it up to be one of the nicest houses on the street. The result; • The homeowner avoided having a foreclosure on her credit and the potential for the bank to pursue her for any amount in the future. • The person that purchased the house got a great deal on a fixer upper. • All realtors received their full commission. • The community now has a beautiful home in their subdivision with a tax paying citizen maintaining it. This helps increase property values for the neighborhood. When Kevin and Jennifer have some down time, they spend their time with friends in their Dunedin community. They found a lot of great friends in their neighborhood, sharing common interests. “Our friends have pretty much been our family over the years.” Jennifer enjoys everything about cooking, and Kevin…well…likes everything about eating her cooking. Kevin’s also likes playing music and collecting / restoring pinball games. Kevin and Jennifer owe their success to the people they’ve surrounded themselves with: their outstanding staff. We also owe a good amount of gratitude to our happy home sellers, buyers & attorneys for their continued referrals. You can hear some of their testimonials on their YouTube channel.. www.YouTube.com/HomefrontRealty For additional information, go to www.HomfrontRealty.net or call 727-641-4444. ortgage brokers that are still in business today are because of hard work, pride and dedication to their craft. Continuing education is required to keep up with the stringent laws and changes that have been put into place in the mortgage industry over the past several years. Keeping up with these changes has not been easy for many. As a result, the mortgage brokers that are still active and conducting business are a direct result of the hard work and effort they have put forth. The others have fallen by the wayside. This is good news for you the consumer! Mortgage brokers are better than ever at helping you find financing for your home. If they can’t find affordable financing for you, maybe you are not ready to purchase a home. Sometimes I have to tell a client they should wait eight months and get their credit score raised so they can qualify for a loan. Sometimes it requires saving more for a down payment or for reserves. It makes my day when someone calls me back a year after I last spoke with them and asks me to check their credit rating and I find they have taken my advice on cleaning up their credit. I love informing them that now is the time to call a realtor and start searching for their dream home. So what exactly does a mortgage broker do? It starts with a phone call from someone interested in purchasing a home. Then it goes as follows;

• Assess the borrower’s circumstances. This in-

cludes reviewing a credit report as well as income documentation and assets. This is a fact finding interview. I give the borrower as many options as possible since I work with more than 10 lenders. After discussing what their options are I help them choose which one best suits their needs, Conventional, FHA, Jumbo, VA, USDA or a HARP loan. I generate a lenders agreement in principle (pre-approval letter). Next, I gather all documents that are needed; pay stubs, bank statements, tax returns, contracts, insurance, title, surveys, etc. Then I complete an application with the borrower and go over all the closing costs. I explain all legal disclosures and the underwriting process and submit the file to the lender. I like to accompany my borrowers to closing and be there for them on their big day.
Once a customer closes on their home, this is not the end of my relationship. I keep all clients on an email list that periodically sends them updates about the mortgage market. As people’s lives and careers change, so do rates and the market. Empty nesters are downsizing and growing families need more space. I get to be a part of my client’s lives as I watch them have babies and see grown children leaving for college. The best compliment I can receive is when a client calls me with a referral. This is also the most rewarding part of my job!

Service Above Self: Welch Agnew, D.V.M. BY LAURIE TALERICO
Veterinarian. Rotarian. Humanitarian. Welch Agnew, D.V.M., has dedicated his career to helping animals and his life to helping humans. Married 46 years to “the girl next door,” he is a dedicated father, grandfather, and golf aficionado. Dr. Agnew’s accomplishments are, in all honesty, too numerous to mention. He is an outstanding member of our community. His motto, like that of Rotary, is “Service above self.”
B
orn in Memphis, TN, he was like any other happy-go-lucky child in the U.S. By the time he was five, like many boys his age, Welch wanted to be a cowboy like his hero Roy Rogers. But unlike most five year old boys in the 1940s, Welch developed Polio, a highly contagious and easily transmitted viral infection. One day as Welch walked down the hallway of his home, he fell against the wall. Paralysis had set in. His parents took him to the hospital where he was admitted to an isolation ward with four other boys stricken by the same disease. He recalls being isolated for nearly a month. His parents would visit him but they had to remain outside in the courtyard; the only way Welch could see his parents was through the window. But due to his strength and determination, and the love of his family, he kept up his immune system and his body was able to fight off this virus within six months. By age six, Welch’s mother put him in tap dancing classes to aid the rehabilitation process. But it wasn’t long before Welch traded his dancing shoes for cleats; he gave up the stage for the baseball diamond where he excelled as a shortstop. To this day, there are no visible signs of him ever having Polio. Welch attended West Point, launching a 29 year career in the Army. He attended Airborne and Ranger schools, served in the 82nd Airborne Division and following Flight School, did a tour in Vietnam as a pilot. After that, Welch attended graduate school, majoring in Spanish, and returned to West Point, but this time as a Spanish professor. By now, anyone would think this has been an amazing career, or rather, an amazing series of careers: Army pilot, officer, Spanish professor. But Welch was driven to do more. He needed to answer yet another calling. Welch resigned

from the Army and enrolled in veterinary school at the University of Tennessee. After graduating, Dr. Agnew rejoined the Army as an Army Veterinary Corps officer. The Veterinary Corps is dedicated to public health and a significant number of Army veterinarians are involved in medical research and development, investigating diseases and researching vaccines, among other activities. Dr. Agnew
Welch Agnew, D.V.M
worked as a public health officer overseeing food inspection and food plant operations, with some animal care mixed in. After retiring from the Army, Dr. Agnew went to work at the Pinellas County Animal Services, first as Assistant Director, then Director. One of the major projects he faced was to control a serious rabies outbreak in the county. There were no known cases of rabies in the county for 40 years, but 39 cases
were reported in 1995. Raccoons were the culprits and they infected domestic animals. Dr. Agnew helped to oversee an oral bait program modeled after one from the USDA. Helicopter and ground teams covered the county with baits the size of matchboxes. These vaccine-laced fishmeal polymer treats were ambrosia to raccoons. Eventually, the program controlled the rabies outbreak in Pinellas County. Another major accomplishment during his tenure at Animal Services was the implementation of the mobile clinic bus that brought basic veterinary care to low-income areas in the county. Currently, Dr. Agnew dedicates part of his time to the PetLuv Spay/Neuter clinic in Brooksville. This operation keeps him involved with animals and off the golf course one day a week. But, he doesn’t stop there. Dr. Agnew continues to help humanity through the Rotary club and is the current President of the Rotary Club of Dunedin North, which supports many charities, including the global eradication of polio. Rotarians help the Dunedin Fine Arts Center by providing scholarships for summer camp programs. The club’s signature project is the Sing, Spell, Read & Write literacy program, which is an after school program for children in kindergarten and first grade that helps them develop reading skills through music. Dr. Agnew is organizing the Rotary Golf Tournament to be held October 5, 2012 at the Dunedin Golf Club, 1050 Palm Blvd., Dunedin. This is the major fundraiser of the year for the Rotary club. Registration is at 11:30 a.m. with a 1:00 p.m. Shotgun start. Players and sponsors are needed. This event benefits all the charitable work done by the Rotary club. Your Money And Your Life The 8 Biggest Lies of Investing
“I’m from the government and I want to help”. We have all probably heard that statement and chuckled at the sentiment. While we can all laugh at the inefficiencies of government there are 8 false beliefs concerning investing that I would like to draw your attention to.
LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE LIST.

1.”Money in the bank or CDs is safe.” People tend to believe their money is safe in the bank and they can’t lose any of it. In our current, extremely low interest rate environment, banks are paying far less than 1% for money markets and short term CDs(http://www. bankrate.com/cd.aspx). Inflation has hovered around 3% for the last few years.(http://inflationdata.com/ inflation/Inflation Rate/Historicalinflation.aspx) Consequently, investors could be losing up to 2% a year in spending power on some of the money invested in CD’s if inflation stays the same. 2..”I have many years to start saving and investing. I’ll wait till I get that raise at work.” The truth is time and the power of compounding interest are working for you or against you. By saving even modest amounts over a long time you can harness the power of compounding interest. Some people never see the “good part” of the compound interest curve because they start too late and don’t have enough time for the money to compound multiple times. 3.”I will write the check to invest next month. Things are a little tight this month. For many people it is difficult to save diligently and regularly.(http://www. bea.gov/newsreleases/national/pi/pinewsrelease.htm.) There is always an excuse to not do it. One way to help remedy this problem is to set up a system so your saving and investing are automatic. By using an auto draft, the money flows from your checking account to your investments every month on a certain day. You don’t see it and are less likely to miss it and it goes to work for you automatically. 4..”The stock market is too risky.” While all investing involves taking some risk, the question is “Does this investment offer reward that is commensurate with the amount of risk you are assuming?” While you need to be conscious of your own risk tolerance by if you avoid any exposure to stocks, you reduce the opportunity for growth. This would not seem like a smart move. 5. “My friend/brother-in-law gave me a tip on this new stock/investment.” This is likely not a wise strategy as often by the time an investor might act on
a “hot tip”, the existing investors have enjoyed some appreciation. Just when the new investor buys, the existing ones decide to take some profit and they sell. As more sell, the price of the shares continues to go down. Once the new investor realizes this, he has lost a significant amount. The rule is to buy low and sell high. However, often with individual retail investors this happens in the reverse order. (http://faculty.haas. berkely.edu/odean’papers%20current%20versions/individual Investor Performance Final.pdf) One of the hazards of acting on tips is that you can buy when the stock is “hot” and selling at a premium and sell when no one wants it. By doing so, we have bought high and sold low, -the opposite of what we should do. 6.”Buy and hold is the way to make money”. 2008 taught most investors that this common held belief is not always true. Every asset class has its up and downs. While we can’t predict the future we can employ strategies to limit declines to assets portfolio by being diligent. By using certain tactics, such as diversification across multiple asset classes we can work to offset or hedge against decline in the value of the investments. 7.”I can do all my financial accounts myself.” Most of us do something for a living other than manage investments. We are very good at what we do and most if not all of our income comes from our work. While everyone should be knowledgeable about their investments, to assume they are experts in the field is short-sided. Once you have communicated your goals and desires, allow an experienced advisor to work with you to help you reach them. Use the expertise and tools which he has to guide you through the financial maze of life. 8. “All financial advisors are the same”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Blockbuster Home Selling 2012 Hunger Games or Hope Springs?
S Broker Owner Jennifer Richards Owner Kevin Richards
elling a Home in Today’s Market can seem to have as many emotions and plots as the latest blockbuster movies! As a seller, you may be feeling like your home is “Expendable” or like you’re living “The Hunger Games”. And, it is natural to desire the leading role in “The Avengers”. But, “Hope Springs” is the best mindset for home sellers in the Tampa Bay real estate market as long as it’s accompanied by a laser focus on the critical factors that will bring positive results. There is hope and here’s why! The real estate market experienced a huge negative shift in 2008 that Floridians have been feeling for the past 4 years. Because of this, selling a home requires different marketing tactics and outstanding agent skills in order to get the best outcome for sellers. That’s why we, at Homefront Realty, designed our brokerage with the client and agent in mind. In every sphere, there are fewer transactions, less equity in homes, and more difficult “ropes” for buyers
to climb to get loans (not to mention buyers looking for the best bargains around!). Considering all of these factors, we knew that in order to serve our community and offer the best full service brokerage, we had to do some real “cutting-edge” things to create a win/win for all of us in the housing market. By creating excellent marketing, lead generation and systems for Buyers, Sellers and Realtors; we have been able to serve everyone no matter what their “unique” situation may be. Hope springs eternal! If you are a home seller or a realtor and would like more information on how our programs and systems are getting phenomenal results, please call for your FREE, confidential consultation. We look forward to serving you! visit our website at www.HomefrontRealty.net to search homes for sale and to connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

Create The Kitchen of Her Dreams
H Art & Diane Whitney
ow better to pamper “her” than to create the kitchen of her dreams. While the primary function of a kitchen may be cooking, storage plays an essential role in how well a kitchen functions. No matter how large or small the room, if it’s not well organized and efficiently arranged, it will undermine the space as well as her sanity. At A-1 Custom Cabinets, we recommend incorporating some key storage elements when designing a new kitchen or remodeling. Roll-out shelves for base and pantry cabinets help maximize your space and eliminate unnecessary straining to reach items in the back of the cabinet. The same is true for swing-outs or lazy-susans in corner cabinets. We also encourage the use of spice racks, back-of-door storage, drawer dividers, cutlery inserts, and dual trash/recycling pullouts to keep the kitchen looking tidy. We represent companies like Rev-A-Shelf and Hafele who offer a wide range of terrific cabinet ac-
cessories, in addition to beautiful rail systems for backsplash storage. Also, because we design and build our own cabinets, we can customize storage in clever ways. The toekick beneath cabinets is completely wasted space, but add a shallow drawer and it becomes a great place for large platters and trays. Or we can add extra depth to cabinets to increase their capacity. For example, a standard upper cabinet at 12” deep can be increased to 16” without much added cost, yet it allows an extra row of glassware or food items. We often sneak shallow base cabinets on the back side of an island or peninsula, perfect for small appliances and cookbooks. Working with the design professionals at A-1 Custom Cabinets is your first step towards creating a beautiful, creative kitchen that can be life changing. As I often tell my husband: “Happy wife, happy life.” Put yourself on that path to happiness, call today for your free consultation.

Do It Right But Do It Your Way!
T
here are oh so many ways for us to express ourselves…our style of dress, the way we speak and write, the careers we pursue, our passions and hobbies, and even the type of friends we keep in our inner circle. But, there is perhaps no larger canvas than that of our home. It truly is a portait of those things that play key roles in who and what we are. Whether we are into pets, art, travel, technology, literature, collectibles, or have a house full of children, our surroundings are a mirror of those interests. By paying homage to those key elements in our lives, we can purposefully configure a home that not only reflects our inner selves but also makes us feel more comfortable and content in our environs. For instance, if you are a techno-geek, use that knowledge to integrate the latest and greatest of gadgets and wizardry into your home. Think motorized window treatments, lighting activated by your entrance into a room, music that flows through your home, TV’s that disappear into furniture or behind art when not in use, even backlit countertops and walls. Just, be sure to hide the realities involved in the magic…that is the wires and components, unless they happen to be sleek and sexy. Is art your passion? You may want to use the gallery wall approach with proper lighting or, at the very least, consider keeping your furnishings more neutral so that your art is the focal point. If you have a budding artist in the house, it is important to provide an area where their creations can be properly displayed. Shelving will allow art to be layered and changed out. And vertical display systems are a space saving way to show off the “art du jour” of a child. It can be as simple as a ribbon or chain hung from the ceiling with clips for attaching their creations. For family and pets, adapt your home with the appropriate safety features, use durable furnishings, and keep the pet pens, play cribs, toy boxes, pet dishes etc. out of main
www.PanacheVue.com
thoroughfares, formal areas and entries. But… proudly display their photos and memorabilia. Collectibles beg to be displayed like art, not simply lined up on shelves, so consider using books, risers, trays, decorative containers, easels and other props to set the stage for their display. And when travelling, try to restrict the mementos you collect to those items that are compatible with your décor. Visiting Hawaii? Would the fine porcelain flower, the
Cheryl Perotti large, rare seashell or the funky carved tiki statue suit your home the best? If you are a reader, a home library may be the retreat of your dreams. This could be a reading nook with a bookcase or an entire wall-shelved room. And speaking of books, please pull some of them out and incorporate them into your design. Nothing says warm and cozy like a few books (also makes you look smart)! They can be stacked, staged with
objects, or lined up with bookends. Just keep the topical nature of the books appropriate to your room, i.e. no taxidermy books in the kitchen or cookbooks in the living room. It is a given that most of us want to feel savvy, stylish and “with it”. But part of the theory of personalizing your home is not feeling the need to constantly update your interiors with the latest look. If you hear a designer declare that a room is outdated and yikes… your walls happen to be the same color as the condemned- don’t repaint yours until you are tired of it. And don’t yank down those drapes (unless they need dry cleaning) just because you heard that draped windows are passé. Classic design components are never truly out of vogue and it is easy to keep your interiors fresh with small, inexpensive changes. Try a few accessories in the current color trend. Paint, paper or tile an accent wall, buy a new rug, or add a top treatment to your window. A few simple changes, and perhaps a new furniture arrangement, can update any home without breaking the bank. And really, this is your space…if you like shabby chic, classic Mediterranean, or country oak- not industrial modern, then ignore the trends and embrace those things you love best! The marble floors we introduced creates a perfect stage for the dark woods and upholstery and a new light fixture reflects the contemporary mood of the furnishings, while still complimenting the more traditional architecture and lighting of the foyer. The homeowners choice of rich colors is beautifully displayed in the accessories through out the room and the faux painted ceiling contributes to the drama.

What was originally a formal living room was painted and refurnished for billiards. A small pub height table, a wall mounted TV and a redesigned fireplace complete the transformation, creating a space that can be enjoyed by the entire family and their guest. An oversized foyer graced by a spiral staircase was the perfect spot for the family’s Steinway piano. The animal print on the lacquered chair adds just a touch of edginess to the formal architecture.

Blonde Ambition
Meet Real Housewives’ Trendy Tycoon Gretchen Rossi BY TOM CASTAÑEDA
S
he didn’t join the cast of The Real Housewives of Orange County until the fourth season, but Gretchen Rossi has become one of the Bravo series’ breakout stars. It’s something she credits to her on camera authenticity. “I’m not anybody different than who I am in my daily life,” professes the 34-yearold blonde bombshell who was recently named a “Hot Housewife” by US Weekly. “I don’t switch to someone else because the cameras are on. You see the good, bad and ugly with me. And I believe that makes me more relatable.” There’s no denying the California girl with striking good looks and an effervescent personality was born to be on camera. “I was constantly entertaining,” says Rossi, who grew up in Southern California. “I would come down during my parents’ dinner parties and have a full getup on. And I’d entertain everyone by singing and dancing.” Despite her ability to engage audiences, Rossi didn’t pursue a career in entertainment right away. “Growing up people approached me about modeling and acting,” recalls Rossi. “But my parents were very cautious of that world, so they didn’t let me do any of it. Instead they encouraged me go to college and pursue a more secure career.” So Rossi, who was over her parents telling her what she couldn’t do, decided to attend college out of state. “I got accepted to three schools… One in Washington, one in Colorado and Baylor [in Texas],” remembers Rossi. “I realized it rained a lot in Washington. And my parents talked about moving to Colorado. So, I picked Baylor!” Rossi, who has always enjoyed figuring out what makes people tick, pursued a degree in psychology. “It just seemed like a natural path for me,” says Rossi. “I was always trying to fix everybody; I always had this innate need to help people.” But after graduating from college and moving back to California, Rossi quickly realized finding psychology work was no small feat. So
40

she worked at a children’s gym—until the 9/11 attacks propelled her to make changes. “I wrote a list of everything I wanted to do should something like that happen again,” states Rossi. “And I started checking things off, including getting my real estate license.” License in hand, Rossi became a top-selling agent with Coldwell Banker after working intense 80-hour weeks. “I loved it and was good at it,” asserts Rossi. “It was such a lucrative business for me, so I continued to work in that field.”
It’s that experience that led to Rossi’s Housewives casting. While attending a dinner party, she sat at the same table as her current boyfriend, Slade Smiley, and his thengirlfriend Jo De La Rosa, one of the original Orange County Housewives. “I was being my silly, flamboyant self and Slade and Jo looked at each other and said ‘She’d be perfect for the show,’” recalls Rossi, who had no interest in appearing on Housewives until her late fiancé Jeff Beitzel persuaded her to reconsider. “So I went to the casting interview and before you knew it, I was on the show!” Following a tumultuous first season of
feeling like an outsider, Rossi has finally hit her stride on the show. “I think the cast members have come to realize who I am,” declares Rossi. “As we’ve seen with Tamra [Barney], she’s really changed her tune towards me because she got to know me. It’s taken a bit for them to like me, but we’re finally there.” Something that didn’t take Rossi long: becoming the show’s style star who was constantly asked about her hair, makeup and clothes. “Fans got upset that they couldn’t afford the products I was using. So I realized there was a niche in the market,” says Rossi, who launched her Gretchen Christine Cosmetics line in 2009. “I wanted to bring high quality makeup to the everyday woman at an affordable price. And that’s what I’ve accomplished.” Following her cosmetics success, Rossi launched her Gretchen Christine Collection of handbags and accessories. “ShopNBC asked me to debut the line with them; I sold 1,000 bags in 50 minutes and we’ve been moving along ever since,” says Rossi, who plans to expand her empire into new areas. “It comes down my individual style and bringing that to the everyday woman.” But Rossi isn’t stopping there… She’s creating a direct selling program that could give Avon and Mary Kay a run for their money. “I’m actually meeting with consultants to make sure that’s the right next move,” discloses Rossi. “We’re developing a great program that could employ a lot of women in America.” Rossi, who recently showcased her Pink Collection for the Breast Cancer Charities of America at New York Fashion Week, knows there’s more to her success than airtime on Housewives. “If I wasn’t a hard worker with a strong work ethic, it never would’ve happened,” acknowledges Rossi. “It comes down to having drive, focus and dedication.” Since Rossi has all that in spades, there’s no doubt she’ll be checking off the next item on her bucket list: creating a multi-million dollar empire.

How Merlot Can You Go?
Spice Up Your Wardrobe with Fall’s Haute Hue: Burgundy BY TOM CASTAÑEDA
I
t’s quite common in the fall for fashionistas to head to the dark side by incorporating the usual colors of black, brown and charcoal grey into their wardrobes. But there’s no reason to (red, red) whine if you don’t want to dress like a New Yorker. This season, you can still make a bold style statement in another deep color: burgundy. It’s not only one of the hautest hues this fall, but it’s richer and more intense than the typical dark shades spotted this time of year. Simply take a closer look at the fall/winter collections from Christian Siriano, Diane von Furstenberg and Jason Wu and you’ll notice that several of the industry’s most noted designers seem to be mad about merlot. During their runway shows in Milan, New York and Paris, they showcased the vibrant color on everything from leather dresses and velvet pants to knee-high boots and attention-grabbing accessories. And if you’re still unsure about filling your closet with sangria-hued pieces, keep in mind that burgundy doesn’t have the harsh appearance that black sometimes does, especially on fair-skinned women. So if you’re ready to get noticed in the oh-so-trendy tint, here are some ways to sprinkle your wardrobe with wine-colored statement pieces:
www.PanacheVue.com
MONOCHROMATIC MAGIC
If you’re looking to create a monochromatic look with conspicuous colors this fall, consider wearing head-to-toe burgundy. Examples include a pair of crimson jeans, jacket and boots, as well as a Bordeaux-colored dress with matching merlot-tinted tights and shoes. No matter which ensemble you put together, you’ll leave black- and grey-wearing women seeing (deep) red with resentment for not embracing the trendy tone.
GOING FOR BAROQUE
Inspired by 17th century baroque styles, fashion brands like Ralph Lauren and Dolce & Gabbana have captured the dramatic style of the period by creating prominent pieces that feature intricate details and elaborate ornamentation. Available in several rich burgundy
shades, the awe-inspiring attire will have you standing out in the crowd in style. And you don’t even have to wear baroque head to toe to be trendy! Simply try a single blouse or skirt and pair it with a solid.
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Here’s one way to intermix this fall’s haute hue with one of the season’s hot trends: invest in a bohemian-print dress in burgundy. Whether you wear the dress on its own or under a fitted jacket, you’ll be channeling the spirit of the late-‘60s while making a bold statement in the process. So whether you pick out an outfit that has you in head-to-toe burgundy or select simple cabernetcolored statement pieces like a baroque skirt or bohemian dress, there’s no doubt you’ll be mad about merlot-colored clothing this season!

Pampering from the Inside-Out

hat is “pampering” but taking care of yourself? Sadly, most of us consider taking care of ourselves to be a once-in-a-while luxury – like scheduling that long-awaited facial on your birthday. It’s partially because we’re busy, and it’s partially because we’re care-givers for everyone else, but either way – we are better people when we take care of ourselves every day. For me, my daily “pampering” starts from the inside-out by taking the time to prepare and eat sinfully delicious foods – that make me feel and look sinfully delicious as well!
fresher faced you – without the microdermabrasion.
Who Needs a Facial When You Have Dark Chocolate?
The Cure for Wrinkles – and Everything Else
I’m just kidding – you should have both! But, while a facial treats the outer layer of skin, that dark chocolate (and spinach, pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, salmon, oats, squash, pine nuts and edamame) will increase the Magnesium in your diet. Magnesium is one of those under-represented nutrients that helps your entire body work better, especially with calcium absorption. But, it’s also essential for slowing the aging process of skin by maintaining elasticity and moisture at normal levels. You’ll often find it as an ingredient in your skincare (it can be absorbed topically), but most women don’t consume enough. It’s the easiest thing to do for yourself: Eat just one Brazil nut a day, and you’ve got your daily recommended dose. But, personally, I like dark chocolate better.
Nothing Says Sexy Like Sun-Dried Tomatoes
I’m not kidding – eating Niacin-rich foods like peanuts, chicken, veal, sun-dried tomatoes and paprika give you the stuff to produce sex hormones, dilate blood vessels, and rev up your heart for action. Not only does Niacin promote healthy skin, improving moisture, lightening hyperpigmentation, and decreasing acne, it can also make you better in the sack. How’s that for a healthy glow? Vitamin C really is a super-food. Not only does it boost your immune system, it’s key to producing collagen which gives skin firmness and strength. As an antioxidant, it slows free radical damage responsible for dry skin and wrinkles, and recent studies have shown it can even reverse DNA damage. Fortunately, Vitamin C is everywhere – in dark leafy greens, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kiwi, guava, papayas and strawberries. And oranges, of course. With all of these great foods – you can pamper yourself every day. Don’t be surprised if your friends start asking for the name of your day spa.
Eat Walnuts to Avoid Looking Like a Walnut
All types of redness and obvious acne is caused by inflammation, which is strongly related to diet. In fact, eating too many foods high in Omega 6 oils, like soybean oil, vegetable oil, and corn oil products (the main ingredients in margarine, salad dressings, mayonnaise and processed foods) increases inflammation. However, if you pick up foods high in Omega 3’s, you’ll look ten times better – and feel better too. Walnuts, canola oil and flax seeds are high in what’s called Alpha-linolenic acid, a type of Omega-3, that maintains a healthy rate of skin cell renewal and reduces inflammation. The TRUTH About Travel
W
hen you click on a booking engine site, it looks very straightforward doesn’t it? There’s the trip, there’s the price, there’s the fine print… oh wait. As CEO of Elite Travel, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen travelers get caught in the tangled web of a website’s fine print. The travel industry needs transparency, and I’m going to give you the truth, straight-up.

Online booking sites say they can change the price you agreed to pay if they “made a mistake.” So when you see an incredible deal on a St. Lucia resort – it might be too good to be true. If the booking site did list the price incorrectly, they can send you the bill and you’ll discover you can’t afford your vacation after all. Let’s say your trip goes as planned. You buy your travel deal, pack your bags, fly to St. Lucia and walk up to the resort’s concierge desk. You’re sipping your complimentary wine spritzer and fishing out a pen for the paperwork when the concierge tells you they’re overbooked and you’ve been bumped to their sister property. You can’t miss it – it’s just down the road next to the construction. Overbooked resorts know that there are no repercussions if they bump guests who made reservations through a travel deal website. However, a travel agent will fight to get you the best service possible, and since agents send lots of business to these properties, resorts listen. The bottom line is: A travel agent acts as your backup should anything go wrong, including delays, cancellations, overbookings and re-routings. At best, online booking engines offer a help line that goes directly to a call center in India.
– BY TAMMY LEVENT
Travel Agencies Aren’t Perfect Either
A great travel agent will make planning your vacation easy, find you the cheapest flights, and bargain with properties to find the best deals. A bad travel agent will lead you in with promises of freebie upgrades and resort credits – based on availability – which means you may not get them. When choosing a travel agent, check their Better Business Bureau record to see how they resolve customer complaints. Even the best get complaints, but a pro will always try to solve the problem. Ask if the agency has 24-7 service, and make sure it is insured, licensed, and bonded to protect your travel plans if it goes out of business. And, ask if your agent has been to the properties, or at least has recent customer feedback on them. That first-hand knowledge is more reliable than user-review sites, since competing properties will plant comments trashing the reputations of their competitors. Yes, that really happens.
3 Reasons to Use a Travel Agent
1. Travel agents’ services are free. Properties and vendors pay us for the business we bring them. We don’t charge for helping to plan your trip. 2. Travel agents save you money when possible by not asking you to pay all at once. If prices for your travel package fluctuate downwards, a travel agent can adjust your prices accordingly. 3. An agency that offers a price match guarantee will give you the low price you found online with great service. Junior League of ClearwaterDunedin, Inc. Presents the 49th Annual Art Harvest
T
he 49th annual Art Harvest will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 3 & 4 at Highlander Park in Dunedin. Art Harvest is a fine art festival featuring over 200 artists from around the country, produced by the Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin, Inc. This year’s Featured Artist is Susan Gott. She has worked in glass for 30 years and specializes in cast glass to create one-of-akind sculptures. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in glass from Kent State University; Bachelor’s from Radford University and studied glass at Pilchuck, Haystack, Arrowmont, Penland Schools. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and her work can be found in several galleries and in both private and corporate collections Her work embodies an interest in mythological imagery, symbolism, and philosophies from historic and ancient cultures. She loves to travel and is intensely interested in ancient civilizations, symbols of ritual art, ancient myths and how they connect us, most deeply, with our own nature and our place in this world. The resulting glass, with primitive qualities and metaphors, are a visual representation of the cycles of life. The archetypal images that emerge explore spirituality, existence, humor, love, magic, dualities and the beauty of life. The human form is a vessel for her connection to Spirit. The elements of this ancient, visual language have become enmeshed in her thought and in her art as she creates a new mythos in glass. Susan has created a piece specifically for Art Harvest. Art Harvest admission is free. Parking is $5 at Highlander Park and $3 at the nearby Dunedin High School with an approx. ½ mile
