DO YOU REALLY NEED BACK OR NECK SURGERY?
M
ore than 465,000 spinal fusions were performed in the United States in 2011. It is estimated that patients spent over $200 million on those surgeries. The United States leads the world in spinal fusions and surgeries. In fact, on average, up to 4 times more surgeries than any other nation, BUT DID ALL OF THESE PATIENTS REALLY NEED SURGERY?? As chiropractors in the Tampa Bay area for over 14 years, Dr. Carl Conforti and his team of doctors have been fighting to reduce those numbers and provide safe, surgery free options for patients who truly want to be well and avoid the pain shots and surgeries.
WHAT IS THE DRX9000?
The DRX9000 is a state of the art machine that allows us to perform spinal decompression in the comfort of our offices.
WHAT KIND OF CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT WITH THE SPINAL DECOMPRESSION? The DRX9000 allows us to treat quite a few conditions. We have both neck and back decompression, so we treat for neck pain, sciatic DRX9000
Dr. Carl Conforti, D.C. Dr. Todd Bodanza, D.C. & Dr. Damien Rogers, D.C.
pain, lower back pain, auto injuries, sports injuries, bulging and herniated discs, and many other injuries.
HOW DO YOU DETERMINE IF SOMEONE IS A CANDIDATE FOR YOUR TREATMENT?
In our candidate assessment, we review MRI’s, x-rays, and we utilize our computerized spinal exam (EMG) to evaluate the problem. After reviewing all of the tests, we discuss medical history and the complexity of the issues.
ONCE YOU DETERMINE THAT SOMEONE IS A CANDIDATE WHAT CAN THEY EXPECT NEXT?
Once we have determined that someone is a candidate for the spinal decompressions treatment, we lay out a treatment plan and start treatment as soon as possible. Many times we can start the patient that same week, and sometimes that same day. With the treatment plan in mind, we start the spinal decompression and therapies to ensure optimal results.
DO THE TREATMENTS HURT?
No, not at all. In fact, many of our patients fall asleep during treatment. Others choose to read books and listen to music. It is actually a very
relaxing treatment.
WHAT IS YOUR SUCCESS RATE WITH THE TREATMENT?
As opposed to traditional surgery, which is about 50% success, our treatment process is successful over 80% of the time. Our careful attention to specific needs and our full in office treatment process allows our patients to be back enjoying their lives pain free and full of life!
COMPLIMENTARY CONSULTATION AND CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT (A $295 VALUE) In this consultation you will receive a consultation, exam, and x-rays (if necessary). Dr. Conforti and his team of doctors will explain their recommendations for your treatment plan and their plan to eliminate your pain, burning, restlessness, and altered nerve function! Call the office nearest you today to schedule your consultation. Offer expires 01-31-15

STRIP TO REJUVENATE
A
lthough it’s great exercise, I’m not suggesting that you take classes in pole-dancing. Instead, I’m suggesting that you rejuvenate your complexion by stripping off the dull outer layer of dead skin so that your live, healthy complexion can shine through. Your skin is in a constant state of turnover. New cells are generated continuously in the deep dermis and gradually, over about 4 to 6 weeks, they rise up to the surface and replace older dead cells. These older cells pile up unevenly on the surface making your skin appear rough, dry and dull. This debris of dead cells prevents oxygen and moisture from reaching your healthy skin cells underneath. This dead layer makes fine lines and wrinkles appear more prominent and can clog up your pores leading to flushing, redness and even acne. A vital part of maintaining a healthy complexion is to strip off the dead cells on the surface so that your own healthy live skin can rise to the surface, breathe, absorb
8

moisture, and glow. The process of removing this cellular debris is call exfoliation. At Red Bamboo Medi Spa, we have a whole host of options for you to choose from to exfoliate and renew your skin. Facial peels are a popular and effective way to remove the dead outer layer of skin. We apply natural fruit enzymes like pineapple, papaya or pumpkin to dissolve the dead skin. Commonly we add mild alpha and beta hydroxy-acids, like glycolic acid from sugar cane and lactic acid from milk, to loosen the bonds holding the dead skin cells to the surface. You will notice an immediate improvement in texture and tone. Commonly, hyperpigmented cells will lift away as well, reducing splotchy discoloration. Dermaplaning is another method we commonly use to smooth the skin and remove dead cells. We hold the skin taught and use a tiny sterile blade held at a 45 degree angle. With a controlled gentle scraping technique, we painlessly exfoliate the microscopic outer layer along with the fine vellus hair or “peach fuzz”. Your skin will never feel more velvety soft and smooth. With microdermabrasion, we exfoliate by spraying very fine smooth crystals onto your skin with a patented hand-piece that directs the flow and suctions away the dead skin and debris. Our Bella Microdermabrasion machine is gentle, but also forcefully effective, and is considered the very best in the industry. You can perform some mild superficial exfoliation at home but it is very important to use medical-grade products. Many of the over-the-counter products, like St. Ives Apricot Scrub, are made from rough jagged particles like pulverized walnut shells which can tear and damage the skin. We recommend medical-grade products only like Revision Finishing Touch made from Polynesian Volcanic Black Sand which consists of fine round polished particles that will not damage the skin. Exfoliating facials aren’t just for women either - male skin needs exfoliation as well. In the past several years skincare products geared solely for men have become very popular and the male market for skincare services has grown enormously. At Red Bamboo, at least 20% of our skincare clients are men. Many of them, though, need a savvy woman to push them in the right direction and make the first ap-
pointment. Whether to choose a mechanical exfoliation method, like microdermabrasion or dermaplaning, or a chemical one like a peel, is less important than committing to a plan for regular exfoliation. Visible results can be seen with a single treatment but it is with consistency that the greatest changes can be recognized. Remember that the skin renewal cycle is a continuous process so that every month or so, your skin could really benefit from exfoliation. Think of it as preventative care like regularly seeing your dentist for a cleaning. We can help you navigate the options and choose a treatment plan that is right for you. You’ll find that your home skincare products will be absorbed more easily and will penetrate your skin more deeply. Exfoliation also stimulates fibroblasts in your skin to produce more collagen to plump and thicken your skin and improve tone and fine lines. Your complexion will be smoother and better hydrated. When your skin circulation improves, you will look younger and more vibrant. Facials also are great at relieving stress and tension. You’ll feel better and look better too! Let us help you devise a plan for regular exfoliation and proper skin care. We will analyze your complexion with our patented Visia® Facial Imaging System and evaluate the home skincare products you are currently using. Our consultations at Red Bamboo are always complimentary. We look forward to meeting you and helping you to get your skin on a path to optimal health, hydration and beauty. REJUVENATE YOURSELF FOR THE HOLIDAYS
T
his is the time of the year that most of us look forward to all year. But instead of joy many of us feel dread. Do you have that stressed, worn out look by the time the holidays arrive? In one visit to our office we can give you a fresh, relaxed “looks like you just got back from a vacation” look. In our 30 years of dentistry we have offered many solutions to the question, “How can I rejuvenate my smile to help me look and feel younger? “We are now able to offer you a long lasting, noninvasive, non surgical technique that will keep your appearance looking younger too. Botox, Juvaderm and the newest filler Voluma naturally give back the youthful appearance you once had. Botox & Juvaderm smooth out the aging lines and wrinkles while Voluma subtly adds volume to the sagging cheek area. These treatments are a natural extension of the cosmetic treatments we already provide
to help ease the aging process, and sustain one’s youth Do you have a frown that doesn’t go away, wrinkles on your forehead, a gummy smile, thin lips or creases around your mouth and nose? Botox is a protein famous for reducing the appearance of unwanted signs of aging by temporarily blocking muscle movement. Facial fillers (dermal fillers) temporarily correct and smooth facial folds and wrinkles as well as enhance the lip area. My philosophy is a natural, youthful look – less is more. I realize you do have many choices as to where to get these services. I often hear why should I go to a dentist to have this done. As a dentist I have been extensively trained on the anatomy of the face, on what the mouth and smile are supposed to look like and on injection techniques. I feel offering these services to you is my honor and pleasure. Now when you visit us for your routine cleaning appointment
you can easily add these injections to your dental visit and leave our office looking younger and refreshed. To add some additonal sparkle to your holidays why not consider one of the following quick dental fixes: • Tooth colored bonding - to reshape your teeth, reapir small cracks & fill in some gaps • Crowns & veneers - to conceal spaces, crooked, chipped or discolored teeth • Teeth whitening - to instantly brighten and rejuvenate your smile • Snap on Smile - to instantly snap on a beautiful new smile over your existing teeth Whichever option you choose, we are available and happy to help you find the right one. Wishing you and your family a holiday season, filled with good health , happy times together and lots of smiles! Dr. Larry Lieberman

César A. Lara, M.D.
’TIS THE SEASON TO BE CONSCIOUS DR. CESAR LARA
W
ith 2015 approaching quickly, we are officially immersed in the holiday season. For many this is a joyful time, full of gatherings with loved ones, religious celebrations, and a good cheer that makes us generous with one another. For others, however, the festivities can also make this a stressful time of year. How can we enjoy the holidays without running ourselves ragged? How can we attend the parties, buy the gifts, and cook the meals without signing up for too many obligations? How can we indulge in food and drink without overdoing, and feeling guilty or sick? There are some simple actions you can take this holiday season to be more joyful and present in every moment. One major cause of stress during this season is the pressure we have come to associate with holiday gift-giving. Giftgiving has become a commercial enterprise that pressures us to find “that perfect gift” for everyone in our family. We can become so preoccupied that we lose sight of the fact that the real gift is your intention when you give it. When you receive a gift, which do you value more, the price tag on the gift, or the thought that the other person put into giving it, or what they wrote in the card? Yet when we buy gifts for others, we do not assume they would appreciate the same things that we do. Sometimes showing your appreciation for someone can be as simple as a “thank
www.PanacheVue.com
you” or a hug. During this time it is important to appreciate yourself as well as others. We so easily become overwhelmed, between the shopping, cooking, decorating, wrapping, partying, and feasting, that many of us spend our holidays feeling under the weather. Our immune systems are overworked, and we catch long-lasting colds or feel a sense of general malaise. When we are worn out, we are not in the best position to take care of others. To care for yourself this holiday season: 1. Get enough sleep each night. 2. Drink plenty of water. 3. Only accept invitations to those parties you really want to attend. 4. Every so often, take a deep breath. Another big stressor during this time is the never-ending parade of food and drink that tempts us at every turn. Whether at home, at work, or at social events, there is an abundance of treats that are readily available. If you are trying to make healthy and consistent nutritional choices, this season can be extremely difficult to maneuver. The most important aspect of our holiday experience is the ability to appreciate each moment, including those we spend with our food and with one another. There are actions you can implement to help you savor your experience of holiday eating, rather than feeling remorseful or ill afterward. 1. Anticipate your indulgences. Take a look at your social calendar, and decide at which events you will indulge. You are not required to have a cookie at work. Perhaps you want to enjoy an extra glass of champagne that night instead. Making plans to treat yourself makes it easier to stay on track and consistently make healthy choices.
2. Always eat a healthy snack before you arrive at a holiday party. This will allow you to more easily navigate the hors d’oeuvres and the buffet. 3. When possible, eat sitting down and in a quiet place. Chew slowly and consciously, taking time to savor the flavors of the food. Allow your body to experience true satiety. 4. Engage in conversation. Hovering around the appetizers makes you more likely to mindlessly snack. Strike up a chat away from the food table, and you may find yourself easily distracted. 5. Practice moderation. Alternate alcoholic drinks with a glass of water. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into your buffet selections. Enjoy one cookie but not four. The holidays can certainly be a time of planned indulgences. What matters most is what we do 80% of the time, not 20% of the time. We want to be diligent to eat healthily, keep an active lifestyle, and manage our stress 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, we can allow ourselves the freedom to enjoy the holidays without guilt. When we share those festivities with others, our joy is magnified by breaking bread together. I sincerely wish that your holiday season be blessed with peace, love, health, and lots of joy! César A. f you’re anything like me, you enjoy people-watching in the airport, shopping malls, etc. While at the airport recently, I overheard a conversation where the man asked his female companion how she would like for him to wear his hair. I got a good laugh as he was not in full agreement with some of her ideas. Later, after boarding my plane, I overheard another conversation between three women about the new hairstyle one of them had gotten and really liked. The conversation went on with all three of them about what they love and hate about their hair currently. It was interesting to hear the topic of both conversations in less than an hour and it got me thinking; I feel so lucky in my profession that I get to make people look and feel better about themselves with new styles and looks. I love what I do because I enjoy seeing others happy and confident, that brings me the greatest reward. As we close out 2014 and begin a New Year, let’s all try to focus on how blessed we are and make time to help others who aren’t as fortunate. Find a way to share your blessings with others. Wishing all of you a happy holiday season and many blessings in 2015!

WELLNESS
POSTURE AND THE BRAIN Having good posture can improve your confidence, mood and overall health SHARON NAYLOR
A
re you a slumper? Check your posture right now to see if your shoulders are rounded forward and your back curled. Chances are you’ve eased into your natural posture: slouched down, head in alignment with your spine, shoulders back, back not straight. And your brain may be paying the price. Researchers at several top academic institutions, including Harvard and Columbia universities, have been studying the link between bad posture and the brain for decades, and their recent findings show that improving posture can improve the brain’s function, and thus your mood and memory levels. Researchers, for instance, found that when you assume what they call “power poses” of confident stance and tall, uplifted posture, your decision-making is subconsciously affected. When you stand or sit up taller, and pull your shoulders back and outward, your brain gets a signal that it’s the confident, powerful you in charge of your thinking, and, in turn, you might make more confident choices. A 2003 Ohio State University study found that when you shake your head “no,” or nod your head “yes” while observing a scenario or listening to information, you may form positive or negative opinions about your observations depending on the motion of your head
16

and its positive or negative message to the brain. And when you sit up straight, you’re more likely to think positively and recall more positive memories. Slumping and slouching can generate negative memories, thoughts and perceptions, which creates stress hormones in the brain, as opposed to happier hormones that can trickle down into your daily choices and create a more energetic, happier you that feels like working out. Everything is connected, and it all starts with how you hold your frame. Dana Carney, a social psychologist at University of California, Berkeley, conducted a 2010 survey that was among the first to reveal that power poses demonstrating confidence (regardless of whether or not a person actually feels confident) increase levels of testosterone and lower levels of cortisol -- the stress hormone -in the brain. Because testosterone is associated with self-confidence, having good posture can create hormones in the brain that make you feel more self-assured. Carney says the power pose sends a signal to the brain, and what begins as a neural impulse turns into an actual, physiological response that boosts brainpower. And science aside, your posture affects how you see yourself, as well as how others see you. If you’re slumped down and slouching during a job interview, for example, the interviewer will likely see you as less confident, and perhaps will have a neural impulse to judge you as less capable. If you have good posture, with your shoulders back and
your body aligned, you can look better in your clothes and will likely receive compliments from loved ones, which will boost your confidence and mood. You could also just love how you look in the mirror, which will make you feel lighter and more positive. Good posture also pertains to walking. If you walk slumped down and in a shuffle, you look bedraggled and overwrought, which can make you actually feel bedraggled and overwrought. When you walk uplifted and with confidence, your brain registers “uplifted and with confidence,” and pumps out happy hormones to match the message. Physical pain from bad posture can affect your brain, too. When you slouch often, you may experience back, neck, shoulder and even wrist pain, which can send signals to the brain that you’re suffering. The brain then needs to create pain-reducing hormones rather than happy ones. It’s quite hard to feel happy when you’re achy, sore or in such pain that you have to take medication for relief. Pain can cause depression when the brain gets sapped of positive hormones. So in many connected ways, good posture makes for a happier brain. And with your happier brain, you have better relationships, fitness, work performance, more intimacy and other positive effects on your lifestyle. There are several ways to improve your posture, including taking a Yoga for Better Posture class, or just yoga classes in general, since yoga elongates the body and retrains your frame to be more upright with your shoulders back and spine aligned, the position will soon feel more natural to you. Exercise as a whole also helps to improve posture. You might also ask a co-worker or relative to help you get more mindful of your posture, with a gentle touch on your shoulder if you’re slouched down at your desk or kitchen counter. When you feel the touch, you’ll straighten up your posture and send a positive message to your brain. And even if you get a hundred touches in a day, you’ll eventually retrain your frame to hold power poses, and your helper won’t have to signal you to straighten up as often.

ell 2014 is almost gone and 2015 is around the corner. We approach this change with Holidays of Joy, giving and spending time with friends and loved ones. No matter what Holidays you celebrate the feelings are the same. We have seen tragic changes in our would this past year from a rampant virus to groups of people dead set on trying to wipe out entire religions and populations because their belief systems are different. We have seen the loss if integrity in not only many business’s but in our political system and the ones who have been entrusted with it’s care. What’s next? We all
need to be responsible for ourselves and keep in mind we are the ones that will shape and change our and our children’s future. I try and lead my life to the highest standards even if it means it will cost me out of my own pocket. I am a very fortunate person like many others that work hard and give back to their community. I would like to wish all a very special Holiday sentiment of joy and peace no matter what your beliefs are. I am looking forward to positive changes in us all for 2015, but we must remember we are the only ones that can affect these changes. Happy Holidays until next year Dr. Duryea

BEAUTY
HOLIDAY BEAUTY SURVIVAL GUIDE BY: DANA MARTINEZ
T
he countdown to the ho-ho-holidays has officially begun. Make sure you’re fully prepared with a pre-holiday beauty blitz that will not only ramp up the glow factor in your holiday photos, but have you feeling ultra-healthy going into the busiest time of the year. BYE-BYE BREAKOUTS Because the holidays are a busy time, many women don’t pay as much close attention to their skin as they do normally. That, coupled with inflammation, is a surefire way to get unexpected breakouts. Advanced planning is the key to keeping your skin on track! Treat your skin to a light and flaky enzyme peel early in the month, or a deep-cleansing facial and microdermabrasion to reboot your skin and clear out your pores. DEFLATE AND DAZZLE Alcohol, salty foods and holiday parties may be fun, but they wreak havoc on your skin, making everything seem puffier than usual, especially the eyes. To deflate, flush your body with antiinflammatory foods — think fruits, vegetables, salmon and un-salted nuts — and drink plenty of water. And be diligent about applying a serum like Revision Retinol Eye Repair or a moisturizer like DEJ or Teamine Eye Complex, both of which are loaded with skin-plumping antioxidants and much-needed hydration. Finally, to help prevent fluid retention in the eye area, try to sleep with your head slightly elevated. REDUCE WRINKLES Though wrinkles are primarily caused by age and sun damage, other factors make them more
www.PanacheVue.com
noticeable like sweets, stress and drinking. Of course, eating clean and flushing your body with water is the first step to rehydrate your skin and lessen the appearance of wrinkles, but what’s the fun of that?? Never underestimate the power of Botox! Botox smooths away lines, crow’s feet, even stubborn mid-brow furrows to create a smoother, more relaxed look almost instantly. Coupled with fillers like Juvederm and Radiesse, you can restore your youthful complexion in minutes. As a bonus, dermal fillers trigger your body to create more of its own natural collagen, so each subsequent treatment has an additive effect to slow the steady march of time. SCULPT YOUR SILHOUETTE If you haven’t quite reached your target tone in time to don that gorgeous sequin party dress, why not supplement your exercise regime with a last minute body sculpting treatment? Exilis’s targeted fat reduction and skin tightening treatment can help you tighten and tone, shed a few inches off your key areas and reduce the appearance of stubborn fat. LUXE YOUR LASHES Make sure your lashes are fabulously flirty and lustrous by treating them with Latisse. It’s a luxe lash treatment guaranteed to get your peepers in tip-top shape, but you have to act quickly! It takes 4-6 weeks to see the longer, fuller, fabulous results, but standing under the mistletoe will be that much more fun. POWER BOOST Cooking. Shopping. Parties. Travel. Family. Work. Kids. What does that spell?? Stress!! If just thinking about it makes you tired and cranky, consider ramping up the B vitamins this season. Weekly Vitamin B12 and B Complex injections rev up the metabolism, increase energy, and keep your mood in check, making it a completely natural, healthy way to feel better, from the inside out. BANISH DARK CIRCLES Sleep is your beauty best friend, but if she goes on vacation - or a holiday bender - try Belotero to fill out those under-eye circles and bags. Unlike other dermal fillers that remain separate from the dermis, Belotero is actually absorbed by the skin. This process allows the filler to adjust to unique facial features and delivers a natural look. Beside treating dark circles, it’s also highly effective for those hard to reach areas like the corners of the mouth like upper lip ‘smoker lines,’ and naso-labial folds.
SAYONARA SCARS Though time may heal all wounds, the leftover scars serve as ugly reminders to something we’d rather forget. Which makes the following news particularly appealing — Trinity Medical Pharmacy’s new, prescription-only, Scar Gel is the perfect fix for new and old scars alike. Not only does this custom-compounded topical treatment reduce the appearance of scars, including those pesky hypertrophic or keloid scars, but it virtually eliminates them all together. UNDER THE MISTLETOE The secret to a younger, sexier, more kissable lip?? Two words - hyaluronic acid. Fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm and Silikon 1000 provide permanent or temporary lip enhancement solutions. Each has its own pros and cons, so be sure to discuss your options with a medical professional. PEAK-A-BOO Sometimes a lady needs to take something off before she can put something special on. From the latest “cheeky” styles to classic waxing treatments, skip the razor this December and try something a lot smoother. LIGHTEN UP If losing weight during the holidays sounds like the impossible dream, think again! Now may just be the perfect time to jump start those New Years’ Resolutions. Why? Because studies show that the most significant weight loss occurs in the first month of any new program. So… start today and lose 10 pounds before Hannukah, or 20 pounds before Christmas. Increased confidence and a shapelier waist? That’s the perfect gift to give yourself. BODY BUFFING For a final body-beautiful prep, treat yourself to an hydrating and tightening “no-one-will-seethose-few-extra-pounds” wrap to ensure your skin is primed to look its best on your holiday. Putting yourself at the top of your holiday to-do list means making an investment in your own well-being. It will not only having you feeling good about yourself, but enlarge your capacity to be there for others. And that leads to a joyous holiday for you and yours. The experts at Lecada Medical Artistry ensure you look your best in any season. Contact Lecada at 813-874-2332 for a complimentary consultation and take advantage of special holiday pricing.

MAXIMIZING YOUR CHIROPRACTIC CARE
C
hiropractic is defined as “a form of alternative medicine that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the belief that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system.”
TRADITIONAL CARE DOES NOT MAKE THE PATIENT WELL
It is estimated that doctors of chiropractic treat more than 30 million people annually. Today, doctors of chiropractic comprise the third largest group of doctorate-level primary-care providers in the nation, next to medical doctors and dentists. Chiropractic care has grown exponentially in the United States, but with
20
PANACHE VUE’
that growth, we have seen an increase in chiropractors who have lost focus on truly healing and promoting health and wellness in the community. Many doctors focus on pain relief and do not spend time providing patients with the knowledge of being well. Traditional chiropractic care strives to remove pain and limited range of motion through manipulations and modalities like electric muscle stimulation and ultrasound. Patients are treated until the pain is eliminated and then they are released from care. The problem with this traditional treatment plan is that the underlying cause of the pain is not eliminated and the pain eventually returns.
CORRECTIVE CARE LEAVES LASTING RESULTS
We see patients in our office daily that say that they have treated with another chiropractor for the same condition in the past. Typically, we find that they received a few adjustments and stopped with care as soon as they “felt” better. The problem with that is that only 10% of the nervous system is programmed to identify pain. So just because you do not feel the pain does not mean that there is not an interference. Our focus in our offices is full “corrective care.” Corrective care realigns the spine, restores the curves, and focuses on maximizing your lifestyle through proper nutrition and lifestyle. This type of care is unique in that it corrects the cause, re-
moves the interference, and maximizes function. Corrective care is not for treating spinal pain alone. Our patients do not just walk in, get adjusted, and walk out. We engage our patients in corrective therapies before and after care and provide each patient with at home exercises to maintain health and wellness everyday not just the days they are coming to see us. In addition to that, we also truly believe in whole health, so we include nutrition information and physical activity as part of our patients overall care. Additionally, we implement 5 essential lifestyle adjustments that allow our patients to function at 100%. Our bodies are naturally built to fight disease and build health, and by teaching our patients to eliminate the interferences that prevent that from happening we are providing whole health corrective care. The 5 essentials we focus on with every patient include: Maximized Mind-- A Maximized Mind encompasses areas such as time and stress management, improving your relationships with others, and making sure that you get adequate amounts of sleep. Working on all of these area’s help to improve a negative attitude and help your overall peace and well-being from within yourself. The right, renewed mindset about life and health are necessary in order to commit to following any lifestyle plan. Maximized Nerve Supply-- Nerve
supply is the life supply to all cells, organs, and systems in the body and so is responsible for all function and healing. Improper spinal alignment is common and likely to happen due to the amount of physical, emotional, and chemical stress you apply to your body every day so must be addressed as the foundational part of living at your health potential. Maximized Nutrition-- What you put into your body affects how you feel each and every day. Food is the fuel that your body needs to continue to power and heal itself on a daily basis. Diets that are high in carbohydrates, have pH or omega-3 imbalances or are nutrient deficient, have negative effects not only on your body, but can create a lot of symptoms such as depression, brain fog, stress and fatigue. Maximized Oxygen-- Exercise allows your body to take in higher levels of oxygen and creates lean muscle that keeps both your body and mind healthy. Studies have shown that exercise consistently match or exceed the benefits of antidepressants. This is your opportunity to decrease fat and increase lean muscle tissue. Minimizing Toxins-- Toxins and chemicals surround us in our everyday lives and are included in items such as medications, refined foods, household cleaners and the items we cook with! Each of these toxins affect our bodies in a negative way and inhibit us from functioning at optimal levels.

Researchers estimated that each daily hour in a chair or couch increased the chances of future physical problems by 46 percent. In other words, if sitting for 12 hours a day produces a 6 percent risk of developing a disability, an additional hour boosts your likelihood by 3 percent. ERICA ERICA THE ULTIMATE GIRLY GIRL
I
’m Erica, a woman approaching the big 3-0 and proud of it! I pretty much have all the traits of my zodiac sign the Piscessensitive, creative, and a great lover. I’m originally from Brighton, Michigan and moved to Florida 6 years ago for my first job out of college as an art teacher. I’m now working as a graphic designer and am also a promotional model. I have one of the biggest hearts and enjoy volunteering. I currently have a little sister through Pinellas BBBS that reminds me what it’s like to be a kid again. I LOVE good food and recently realized I like cooking for the special people in my life, but am an epic failure at baking. I’m the ultimate girly girl and am also super laid back. I have a big secret to tell, I can actually do manly work really well and enjoy doing it. I’m the baby of my family with an older brother that still picks on me out of love and I have the most amazing mom and dad a girl could wish for. Without them my life would not be what it is today.
www.PanacheVue.com
Panache: Why did you choose this business or line of work? Erica: I chose graphic design because of my interest in art that pushes the boundaries and for psychology (solving people’s problems); this was a great way to merge the two together. Plus specialty papers are so amazing. Panache: What is your primary role or duty in your company? Erica: As a graphic designer I am given projects from various clients that are related to making their company standout. These could be as simple as a business card to creating multi branded pieces from logos to brochures and digital art. Panache: What sets you apart from your competition? Erica: The fact that I love to research my client and similar pieces that have been created by other designers. You always want to know who your competition is. Plus I believe glitter is a color. Panache: What would you be doing now if it weren’t for your business, taking money out of the equation? Erica: I think I would pursue going back to school and try to make it as a television show host, since I love public speaking. Is HSN hiring? Panache: What do you do for fun? Erica: I like to do anything beach related,
I love the water. A night of good wine with good company never gets old. Panache: Who or what is most important to you, personally or professionally? Erica: A balanced life and having passion for what makes me who I am today. Without balance and passion different aspects of your life get the short end of the stick. Panache: A little secret about you that would shock those who don’t know you! Erica: My right pupil is shaped like Pac Man. Panache: What are your personal and professional mottos? Erica: Sometimes we forget about the ground we walk; meaning, don’t forget how you got to where you are today and who helped you get there. Panache: When you were five, what was your dream to be when you grew up? Erica: OMG, I wanted to be a nun until my mom told me I couldn’t wear makeup-up and had to cut my long hair. Panache: Have you achieved all or most of your dreams thus far? Erica: Definitely not! I’m still so young and have so much more of the world to see and people to inspire me to create new dreams. Plus, I’m still waiting for the day I get to be a mom, that’s a really big dream. PANACHE VUE’

WHAT’S IN YOUR DINING ROOM? BY GENE MCDONALD
R
ecently I just finished a very unique dining room table that really embraced the design of Mixing surface materials for what I called a stunning combo. The customers wanted to use the Semi-Precious Stone Collection called Blue Agate which is really premium priced. We built a natural Bamboo wine cabinet underneath to be the base. It has wine shelves that open up and access to the storage inside. “But wait there’s more”… this storage base also has a location for the LED mega Light which illuminate the wine bottle shelves and the Agate up above.
www.PanacheVue.com
When we were in the designing stage, the customer challenged me into coming up with something to inlay into the agate. The Agate had to match but yet not look like a hot mess. I saved the bamboo strips left over from building the base and I had some Cobalt Resin material to blend well for this great design. Blue Agate varies in prices starting at Six hundred dollars a square foot. Backlighting may bring that price up a bit due to electrical work and lighting. I have been seeing more and more in the kitchen design world the mixing of materials. It does look nice and work
to budget when you use majority of your kitchen countertops in a material like quartz, natural stone, or seamless surfaces. But then the kitchen High bar, pass through, window sill and Island can be in a complimentary premium material like Glass, Agate, Recycled Glass and concrete, or even copper.

Dali Hernandez is the Creative Director and head designer for House of Dali. She is also a Real Estate Agent operating in the Tampa Bay area. Dali’s arrival to the fashion industry has been making numerous headlines; however designing is nothing new for this NY native. She recalls her childhood’s obsession with fashion magazines, and with the help of a pair of scissors, she would cut various designs to mix and match and ultimately transform her bedroom walls into the latest fashion show. The days she went fabric shopping with her mother gave her an early perspective on quality variation and how the same design can be completely altered due to fabric choice. WELLNESS
THE HEALING POWER OF TOUCH BY DAVID LIPSCHITZ
O
ne of my best friends gave me a gift certificate for a massage as a birthday present. It took me about three months to finally schedule it. I never realized what I was missing. I just loved it. I felt relaxed, calm and found it a wonderfully nurturing experience. Since then, I have pampered myself by frequently getting massages. The best-known benefits of massage are that it reduces stress, eases tension and clears the mind. It promotes relaxation and tranquility. Massage helps relieve back pain, neck pain from injuries, and strained and painful muscles. It can even improve athletic performance. Massage is soothing and sensual. It can help depression, anxiety and actually enhance your immune system. Touch is an essential emotional need. In a calm, safe setting, the benefits
30

are substantial. Massage is beneficial for many chronic problems that are in part caused by or aggravated by stress. Massage reduces pain, stiffness and fatigue, and improves sleep. There is also evidence that massage can improve the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, presumably by alleviating stress. It is also helpful as a component of therapy for chronic back pain. Research has shown that when administered by a well-trained masseuse, and in combination with physical therapy and pain medications, therapeutic massage is of great value and more effective than acupuncture. Touch is one of the most important ways of communication, and lack of touch has a negative effect, causing loneliness and isolation. Americans virtually never touch each other. An interesting study done in coffee shops in various countries showed that in Puerto Rico couples touched each other 180 times an hour, and in Paris, it was 110. By contrast, in the United States, the average couple touched each other twice hourly, and in London, couples almost never touched. Public displays of affection, or “PDA,” as some of my best friends call it, is considered a cardinal sin. What a trag-
edy. Perhaps this is the reason massage is not more popular in the United States. We are resistant to massage therapy because of reluctance to be undressed and touched by strangers, and by viewing it quite erroneously as an erotic rather than therapeutic experience. Touch by itself is very important and beneficial for individuals of any age. For example, premature babies given three 10-minute loving massages daily gain weight 47 percent more rapidly and leave the hospital earlier than those who are not massaged. In patients with Alzheimer’s disease, therapeutic massage and touch induce calm and reduce agitation and disruptive behavior. Nursing home residents who are frequently and therapeutically touched by trained staff remain healthier, lose less weight and are hospitalized less than those who are not. One of the greatest benefits of owning a pet is the ability to touch and stroke it, and both give and receive unconditional love. These days, many nursing homes allow pets in their facilities and have outdoor farm animals and periods of actual pet therapy when residents are able to love and stroke cats or dogs. As a new massage addict, I would recommend it to all who can afford it. Cost, in my view, is the only good excuse not to have a massage. Being too busy, too tired or too lazy are good reasons to have one. And if you cannot afford one, remember the important roles that touch plays in fostering happiness and health. Sit and hold hands in the movie theater and in restaurants. Never, ever leave the house without a hug and kiss, and sit together on the same couch at night while relaxing and watching TV. And consider back and foot rubs. Who does not like them? We must always remember that many older people are isolated and deprived. Make sure you visit them frequently, and always touch and hug them, and hold their hands. Don’t discourage older persons from having a pet just because of difficulties with upkeep. Choose an apartment building or assisted-living center that allows pets. Physical contact is an essential element of the way we interact with each other and promotes lifelong health and happiness.

NUTRITION
NUTRITION ROCK STARS
W
e could pick a lot of food to fit this category, but when it comes to nutrition, leafy greens are rock stars, according to the latest issue of Food & Nutrition magazine. Here’s why -- they top the charts in vitamins A, C and K, potassium and fiber with only 5 to 40 calories per cup. Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, collards and cabbages are natural defenders and recognized for their potential roles in cancer prevention. Kale, spinach and turnip greens are high in lutein, a phytochemical that may reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration. As a general rule, the darker the green, the more nutrition. Spinach will give a more powerful nutrition punch than iceberg. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend consuming at least 11/2 cups of dark green vegetables per week. A note of caution for anyone taking blood thinners like warfarin -- because of their high vitamin K content, large amounts of leafy greens may interfere. Before you use greens, thorough cleaning is essential -- wash greens in several changes of cool water to eliminate dirt. Fresh leafy greens keep in the

refrigerator crisper for three to five days. For extended storage, hardier greens can be blanched and frozen. Cooking greens concentrates many of the vitamins and minerals and can help lessen bitter flavors. However, water-soluble nutrients such as vitamin C can be lost if the greens are cooked for too long. Try collards, spinach, mustards, cabbage, romaine, watercress, chard, turnip greens, kale, arugula and escarole.
Q AND A
Q: Is adding Parmesan cheese a good way to add flavor to salads and other healthy foods without adding a lot of calories? A: Richly flavored cheese, like Parmesan, used in small amounts can be a smart strategy for adding flavor without many calories. One tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese adds only 22 calories, just less than one gram of saturated fat and only 76 milligrams (mg) of sodium. You might want to try the blocks of Parmesan and Romano, as they tend to have a stronger flavor than the pre-grated cheeses. Then you can grate just the amount you need at home. With a flavorful cheese like Parmesan or Romano, one tablespoon or less is plenty. However, when large amounts are melted over a food or when it’s part of baked dishes that include the Parmesan name (like Eggplant Parmesan), the calorie and fat (especially saturated fat) can add up. If adding some grated Parmesan to salads or vegetables helps you enjoy them
so much more that you eat larger portions of these healthful foods, then overall it will probably help you fill up on fewer calories. A diet with plenty of leafy greens and other low calorie vegetables is linked to health benefits including lower risk of cancer, heart disease and more. HEALTH & FITNESS
WATER FITNESS
BENEFITS
T
he unique properties of water combine to offer one of the most effective environments for an exercise program. Water fitness is the great equalizer – participants of a wide range of skill and fitness levels can enjoy this low-impact, total body conditioning workout. With the addition of high-quality equipment, the benefits of a water workout are endless.
GETTING FIT: TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING
• Studies have shown convincingly that water workouts decrease body fat as effectively as land-based exercise programs. • Without performing a single sit-up, a water workout tones and strengthens the abdominals as a result of maintaining a vertical posture against the water’s resistance.
36
PANACHE VUE’
• Water offers a three-in-one workout for cardiovascular and muscular conditioning and enhanced flexibility. This timeefficient, total body conditioning workout results in increased strength and endurance, and improved biomechanics and balance. • Low-impact aquatic workouts can prevent the injury, strain and re-injury common to many land-based exercise. Water supports 90 percent of the body’s weight – resulting in reduced stress on joints, muscles, tendon and ligaments. • Water is a natural and instantly adjustable weight-training machine. Resistance is approximately four to 42 times greater in water than air. A workout can be as vigorous or light as desired by effectively utilizing the water’s resistance. • Unlike most land activities, water provides resistance in all directions, so both sides of the muscle pair can be strength-
ened simultaneously. For example, an arm curl works both biceps and triceps, since there is resistance to the movement in both directions. • An upright water workout can be more effective than swimming, because the body’s vertical position increases resistance 75 percent over swimming laps. Water Fitness Benefits -- 2
FEELING GOOD: FITNESS FOR A LIFETIME
• A regular water fitness program can result in the permanent reduction of blood pressure. Water’s hydrostatic pressure helps the heart circulate blood, which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise versus similar exertions on land. • Practical daily movements such as walking, lifting and reaching can be incorpo-
• Buoyancy equipment, such as the patented AquaJogger® belt, suspend the body securely and comfortably, supporting the head and neck out of the water, so hair stays dry and glasses can be worn. Water Fitness Benefits -- 3 • Especially beneficial to individuals with disabilities is the fact that water workouts offer a greater range of motion and freedom of movement than many land-based exercise.

rated into a water fitness workout to enhance functionality. This can result in the ability to enjoy and perform the activities of daily life with greater energy and ease. A water workout can be a social activity just like fitness walking or riding side-byside stationary bikes. With access to an indoor pool, water exercise becomes a great year-round activity, as well as a safe workout option during inclement weather. It can also be an affordable alternative to at-home workouts which often involve more expensive equipment. Water exercise is both exhilarating and therapeutic – reducing stress-related symptoms such as high blood pressure and muscle spasms. The water’s full body massage action provides a vigorous yet deeply relaxing workout that is usually pain free. Water exercise involves all muscle groups, yet virtually eliminates muscle soreness – leaving the muscles relaxed instead of

tight and sore.
WATER WALKING: NO SWIM SKILLS REQUIRED
• Water walking and running movements are simple to learn and require no swim skills, making deep water workouts accessible to virtually everyone – from those just beginning a workout program to those looking for a great cross-training option. • Whether in peak condition or recovering from surgery, the water’s forgiving environment supports and offers a light or challenging workout according to the person’s need – for both fragile physical therapy clients and intense athletes. • The water’s buoyancy helps even the uncoordinated land exerciser achieve a measure of grace with movements that are easy to learn. The fact that water obscures less than stellar bodies also makes this exercise appealing to the self-conscious.
• Water exercise demands the continual use of the abdominal and back muscles as well as the arms and legs in order to maintain erect body alignment and balance. This strengthening of the core abdominals and back can assist in managing and preventing back pain. • Water exercise enables a person to preserve as much fitness and function as possible while rehabilitating an injury. Many people heal to over 100 percent of preinjury strength and may actually improve their fitness level. Some individuals who have committed to aquatic therapy found their recovery time is reduced by half. • Heat is lost 25 times faster in water than air, allowing for longer and more comfortable workouts. This natural cooling of the body is particularly beneficial for people who tend to overheat during exercise, and in conditions such as pregnancy or multiple sclerosis, where maintaining a lower core body temperature is very important. • The water’s pressure helps the heart circulate blood which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise. As a result of this hydrostatic pressure, water exercise may be one of the best and safest activities for cardiac patients. It also helps reduce swelling, allowing many people with arthritis or injuries to exercise. n To find a retailer near you visit www.AquaJogger.com or call 1-800-922-9544. DISCOVER THE WONDERS OF THE SEA OF CORTEZ BY JIM FARBER
“The Gulf and Gulf ports have always been unfriendly to colonization. Again and again attempts were made before a settlement would stick. Humans are not much wanted on the peninsula.” -- from “The Log From the Sea of Cortez” by John Steinbeck, 1941. From the bridge of the Safari Endeav-

our the view in the distance seemed to resemble the thin white line of a coral reef that stretched from one shore of Baja California’s Sea of Cortez to the other. But that was impossible. No such reef exists. Our ship, one of the small-scale luxury vessels operated by Un-Cruise Adventures, had set sail from the bustling port of La Paz five days before, heading north with a passenger list of just 28 and a crew of 22, all under the skilled guidance of its captain, Kendra Nelsen. By night we dropped anchor in isolated coves, while our days were spent kayaking into sea caves, snorkeling with sea lions and hiking on uninhabited desert islands. But on the day we spotted the mysterious reef we had been sailing around for several hours in no particular direction, simply in search of the sea life. All the passengers had their binoculars out. As the ship drew gradually nearer we could see that the surface of the water was literally frothing white with plumes of spray and numerous splashes. “It’s a super-pod of dolphins,” our onboard guide and naturalist, Jeremy Saenez, declared, clearly as excited by the spectacle as we were. “It happens when a number of pods come together to feed.”
Moments late the entire ship was surrounded by a mass of leaping and diving dolphins that numbered in the thousands. Interspersed among the dolphins were several gray whales whose graceful flukes were breaking the water. It was a National Geographic moment none of us will ever forget. The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, is a large inlet of the eastern Pacific Ocean along the northwestern coast of Mexico. It is enclosed by the Mexican mainland to the east and by the mountainous peninsula of Baja California to the west. The gulf is 750 miles long and an average of 95 miles wide, about 200 miles across at its mouth. It covers a total surface area of 62,000 square miles, making it the one of the largest peninsular bodies of water in the world. Despite its spectacular rugged scenery and close proximity to the United States, the vast majority of the land on the Baja Peninsula -- as well as the multitude of islands that dot the Sea of Cortez -- is uninhabited simply because of a lack of water. Two major exceptions are the fishing port and capital city of La Paz and the tourist mecca of Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of the peninsula. And aside from tour-

ism, the only commodity that has ever brought treasure-seekers to the Sea of Cortez is its riches in the form of pearls. Fortunately, as a result of its isolation and lack of development, the Sea of Cortez has served as a sanctuary for wildlife for millions of years. It is home to the greatest variety of seals, dolphins and whales in the world, as well as manta rays, turtles, a veritable rainbow of fish and vast flocks of sea birds. Its harsh, rugged landscape of red rock cliffs, chaparral and cactus has hardly changed since the arrival of Nunez de Guzman, who was dispatched by the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and discovered the gulf in 1532. Because of its limited facilities, the Sea of Cortez (with the exception of Cabo San Lucas) has never become a port of call for the mega cruise ships that ply the Mexican Riviera. But because of its many sheltered islands and coves, the area is a favorite destination for pleasure boating and small-scale cruise ships like the Safari Endeavour. Un-Cruise Adventures specializes in high-end cruises that feature elegantly appointed ships and an intimate friendly environment where 15 minutes after

boarding every crew member knows your name. Everything is included in the cost of the cruise, including all activities from snorkeling and kayaks to early morning yoga classes, sumptuous meals and any alcoholic drink that suits your fancy. The cabins are exceedingly comfortable and available in varying sizes. There are also special programs for kids that involve them in activities that combine fun with education about the Sea of Cortez and its natural wonders. Un-Cruise Adventures, particularly on the Sea of Cortez, are far less structured than many cruise lines. The itinerary for the day is based on what seems best at the moment, though there always seems to be time for snorkeling expeditions, kayaking, paddle-boarding or simply leaping off the ship into the deep blue water. One optional shore excursion that is very popular is a day trip from the port of Loreto across the peninsula to Bahia Magdalena on the Pacific Ocean. This shallow bay is famous as the site where the great herds of migratory gray whales come in the spring to have their calves. Here passengers board small power launches to glide among these gentle giants. Impromptu activities can include a
mule ride to a beachside oasis amid the idyllic setting of Bahia Aqua Verde, a sunset or moonrise champagne boating party, or a dance under the stars by firelight on the beach of a secluded island. And if you’re lucky, you might even encounter a super-pod of dolphins. It is an unfortunate fact that many people have shied away from booking Mexican vacations because of the violence that has plagued the region. This has been far less the case on the Baja Peninsula and should not unduly influence your plans. The Sea of Cortez is one of the most beautiful (and convenient) travel destinations near the United States, and its density of wildlife is on a par with Africa and Alaska. It is one of the great natural wonders of the world.
WHEN YOU GO
The best way to get to the Sea of Cortez is to fly to either La Paz or San Jose del Cabo. Un-Cruise Adventures offers a variety of tours: January through March, June through October and November through December. Book before Feb. 28, 2014, and receive one night pre- or post-cruise free at the Hilton San Jose del Cabo: www.un-cruise.com/mexico-cruises or 888-862-8881.
