etting into this summertime season I had a very interesting question poised to me at a recent new patient consult. I was asked by a young Patients mother that “Wasn’t it true that if the patient is older when we treat them the teeth will stay better in their new position”. According to this Mother this is what had been told to her by friends. Unfortunately this is another “old wives tale”. So to set the record straight, Age has no direct relationship to long term stability of an Orthodontic end result. What I mean by direct relationship is that the position of the teeth will maintain themselves as long as they are retained, no matter how old one is. I guess one could argue that a young person may not wear their retainers as well as an older individual
and hence see more tooth movement. But it boils down to the individual and their wiliness to follow their Orthodontists recommendations. In all the years that I have been in practice I have seen patients that I have treated at the age of 12 and with good retainer wear see perfect stability at the age of 40. In the converse I have seen patients treated at the age of 40 and by 45 their teeth are moving all over the place due to poor retainer wear. One thing that summer affords us is that getting your braces on now will allow for adjustment to them prior to the beginning of School, and one less thing to be concerned about starting a new school year. T
here has become an inexhaustible amount of medical technology and natural cures claiming to either get you well or enhance your health in some way. But although billions of dollars are being spent and more and more doctors and specialists are going into practice every year, the amount of illness, depression, disease and the number of people on prescriptions dramatically increase every year. veryone's idea of a perfect vacation or getaway is different. Most would agree, however, that a beach vacation rates up there with the best. Those with homes on a beach will tell you how great it is to live where others can only spend a short time, and that

every day seems like a bit of a vacation. Relaxation at your doorstep. Beachfront residences are enjoyable projects to design. The sheer fact that they are on or near to the beach gives the project a certain allure. Of course, each beach is different. The beaches in St. Bart's are different than the beaches in Miami, or the beaches of the Jersey Shore. Every location is going to dictate the tone or flavor of beach that an interior should have. Some locations such as Palm Beach, Florida, will require a bit of formality and fantasy
to match the Mediterranean revival mansions, other places such as Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard bring to mind restrain and simplicity appropriate for cedar cottages. Every decoration and gesture should be a manifestation of its location. Yet all locations share some common elements of a beach location. The ocean, sand and local flora; these elements can be an infinite source of inspiration. Those residences or condominiums that are on the beach or waterfront can benefit from the views offered. In these homes, the color of the water, which can range from aqua to blue and green will undoubtedly feel the impact of its surroundings. Homes that are not in visual proximity to the ocean can still introduce the color throughout. Walls can be painted to highlight or match a particular body of water and give a room a pop, or color can be brought in through flooring or area rugs. The color of sand can be helpful in selecting a color palette, and can vary depending on the location. There are beaches with bright, almost white sand; others are tan; some are pink because of the small bits of shells; and still others that have gray or black sand. Some beaches even forgo sand and are adorned with pebbles. Here, too, the colors of the beach's floor can vary greatly. All of these earth tones though can blend with almost any other color. The flora of a beach varies greatly as well. Palm trees abound in warmer climates from Africa to the Mediterranean, and pines trees, shrubs and sea oats are common to others. Shades of greens and browns are also very easily mixed and matched. Although the impact of nature is variable, a certain spirit of rusticity is always present in beach locations. Bringing the ocean in is always popular for beach locations. Shells, sea fans and driftwood can be used for decoration. Nautical themes for works of art and the shells, etc. themselves can be used as accessories for shelves and table top items. Blue, neutral and white color schemes are safe, but adding a punch of color such as cherry red, chartreuse green, hot pink or fiery orange can make your beach decorating seem fresh and unexpected.

A Purdue University study found that the breast milk of American women contained fewer health-promoting compounds called carotenoids than that of women in China and Mexico -- 40 percent less and 25 percent less, respectively. The reason: American women eat fewer fruits and vegetables.

etting a tattoo remains a popular practice (1 in 5 adult Americans now have at least one), despite eternal warnings and evidence that many such indulgences are destined to become permanent rueful reminders of bad decisions made. For parents seeking new ammo, there's this from dermatologists at NYU Langone Medical Center: In a survey of 300 tattooed adult New Yorkers, 6 percent said they suffered from a related rash, severe itching or swelling that persisted for more than four months. In some cases, the discomfort lasted years. "It is not yet known if the reactions being observed are due to chemicals in the ink itself or to other chemicals, such as preservatives or brighteners, added to them or to the chemicals' breakdown over

time," said study author Marie Leger. The study found that up to 10 percent of people with new tattoos experience shortterm complications, such as delayed healing, pain, swelling and infection. Only one-third sought medical assistance; most simply returned to the tattoo parlor for advice. Most long-lasting complications were found to occur in skin regions injected with the two most common tattoo ink colors: red and black. Forty-four percent of chronic reactions were to red ink, even though only 36 percent had tattoos with red ink. One-third of chronic cases involved black ink, but more than 90 percent of tattoos use black coloring. Leger plans a larger survey to determine what color inks and possible dye components are most closely linked to adverse reactions. ear Andrew Ashton, Can you provide any tips for taking care of my skin in the summertime? Is there anything different I should be using or doing during the summer months? Thanks, Cyndi Tampa Dear Cyndi, We all know to well that we are in the heat of the summer months. I definitely have some tips and suggestions for taking care of your skin during the summer months as well as throughout the
year. We have all heard it‌.use sunscreen. A few things to remember when using sunscreen. Use sunscreen daily and if you are out in the sun for an extended period of time, make sure you are reapplying every 1-2 hours while in the sun. Apply your sunscreen 15-30 minutes prior to heading outside. And by the way, make sure you are throwing away last years sunscreen. Sunscreens aren't meant to last forever. Most of the time you should be using a shot glass amount for your body and a full teaspoon for you face each time you apply. Also, use a sunscreen of at least a 30 SPF (Sun Protection Factor) making sure the sunscreen is protecting you from UVA and UVB rays. There are lots of great sunscreens out there like Sonage Resistance SPF 30. Even if you are using a sunscreen, don't skip out on your moisturizer. This is still an important step. You may want to switch your oil based moisturizer to a water based when the weather is so hot and humid as to not get too oily. A great water based moisturizer is Sonage Presage 15. Also using a toner on your face is great in the summer heat. A toner, like Sonage Hydrating Rinse, helps to close pores and keeps the skin cool. Your skins doesn't just depend on what you are putting on the outside but it is important to re-
member to take care of your skin from the inside as well. By staying hydrated during the hot days of summer, your body will not lose important moisture it needs. Drinking water and plenty of it, will help you skin stay soft and moisturized. If you need a bit more variety with your liquid intake, try fresh lemon or lime in your water or choose fresh juices or coconut water. I also know we all like to have a bit of color in the summer months, but we know the damaging as well as aging effects of the sun on our skin. So if you want a bit of color, why not opt of a custom spray tan like the organic, vegan, and gluten free Norvelle spray tan. This is a great way to have some natural looking color without the damaging effects of the sun. As for using any spray tans, it is important to exfoliate before receiving one. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin and improve blood circulation in the skin. A Papaya Enzyeme exfoliating scrub works wonders. Once a year, CSPI goes on a binge and partakes of fare proffered by the nation's restaurant chains. The post-dining result is called the Xtreme Eating Awards. This year's top "dishonoree" is Red Lobster, with its "Create Your Own Combination" offer of assorted shrimp entrees, pasta, Caesar salad, french fries and a cheese biscuit washed down with a 24-ounce margarita. Total calorie count: 3,600, or nearly twice the recommended daily calorie allotment for an average person hoping

BODY OF KNOWLEDGE Hair today, gone tomorrow. The average person loses 60 to 100 strands of hair each day, part of the natural process of recycling follicles. The rate is affected by factors such as season, pregnancy, illness, diet and age. The life span of a hair is three to seven years, on average.
MEDICAL HISTORY This week in 2004, the British Medical Journal published the first study quantifying the health damage of smoking over a lifetime. Researchers looked at 34,439 male British doctors who smoked, following them for 50 years. They found that almost half of persistent cigarette smokers were killed by their habit, and a quarter died before age 70. Those who quit by age 30 had the same life expectancy as a nonsmoker. Even quitting at age 50 saved six years of life compared with those who continued smoking. At age 80, 65 percent of nonsmokers were still alive, but only 32 percent of smokers were. CURTAIN CALLS In 1998 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, while the Bena Tshadi soccer team was hosting Basanga, lightning struck the field. Half of the players immediately collapsed to the turf, some writhing while holding their ears and eyes. CRAVINGS... THE GOOD AND THE BAD DR. CESAR LARA
A
t one time or another, all of us have experienced a craving. Cravings come on as a sharp, sudden pang inside that demands we eat something, and eat it now. We often think of cravings as bad things, uncontrollable impulses to eat too much and make the wrong food choices. In truth, cravings are not necessarily negative. They provide us with important information from our bodies. We run into trouble when we do not have the tools to be savvy in interpreting this feedback. We end up treating ourselves in ways inconsistent with achieving and maintaining optimal health. There are many different reasons why we crave what we do, and why we even crave at all. This is the first of a series of three articles that will talk about cravings from a nutritional and emotional standpoint. Sometimes our cravings are simple and straightforward. If you skip breakfast, you are likely to feel hungrier than usual before lunch. If you had just run a marathon, you would not be surprised to find yourself starving after the race. All the processes of our bodies require energy, and that energy comes from what we eat. When we deprive ourselves of this energy by skipping meals, or when we burn more energy than usual through exercise, cravings let us know that we need to take in more calories in order to keep our bodies functioning properly. What we crave is determined by our bodies’ needs in a particular moment. Often we crave sweets. The body requires carbohydrates in order to function. Carbohydrates break down into sugar, which is the easiest method for turning food into energy that the body’s cells can readily use. However, when we crave, we tend to grab the first food available, and to eat it

quickly. This is problematic for two reasons. First, the closest food on hand is not necessarily the same choice we would make under non-craving conditions. When we are craving, we tend to choose highsugar and often high-fat foods that take no preparation. In other words, we eat junk food. Second, when we crave we eat so quickly that we do not have time to respond to our body’s natural signals that we are full, and we often end up eating much more than normal. Eating large amounts of sugar quickly spikes the insulin levels in our body, creating a cycle that leads to increased insulin resistance, and can cause problems such as diabetes. Sometimes our cravings are more confusing. For example, we often confuse thirst for hunger. When we are thirsty, our bodies send us intense signals that come on quickly. We turn to the nearest snack available, but the snack doesn’t do the trick, and so we reach for something else to eat. We don’t ultimately feel satisfied until we rehydrate, because our body is craving water, not food. We want to be in control of what we eat, rather than what we eat controlling us. How can we start to get a handle on our cravings? 1. Eat regularly. Starting with breakfast revs up your metabolism at the start of the day, and can help you avoid cravings. This allows you to make smarter, more conscious food choices. 2. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water each day, at least 64 ounces. When you feel a hunger pang, try drinking a glass
of water before selecting a snack. This will prevent you from confusing thirst for hunger. 3. Keep snacks available. That way, when you feel hungry, you have healthy options on hand. Choose foods that contain proteins, fats (a little), and carbohydrates. Complex foods will help you stay full longer. Paying attention to where, when, and why you crave is the most important step in managing your cravings in a healthy way. For more information on cravings, stay tuned. ENTRANCE HALLS AND HALLWAYS JOSEPH PUBILLONES
W
e all know first impressions matter. Well, my friends, the same holds true for our homes. Walking into an entrance hall should be a warm and inviting experience, a preamble to the rest of the home's decor. However, entrance halls

are frequently seen as merely functional spaces and are forgotten or relegated to lackluster design. In theory, designing the interior should be rather simple, because rarely is this space ample enough to contain a lot of furnishings. Most entry halls are small -- not much larger than the hallways they lead to. If space allows, an entry hall should contain seating, such as a chair or a stool, a mirror, and a console or table to hold letters, keys and cellphones. Ideally, the walls of an entrance hall would be painted in one color to create unity. The color should be chosen based on either the predominant color of the
house or an accent color within the decorating scheme. For example, the color could be inspired by an accent color found on drapes in an adjoining room, or chosen to reinforce the color of the sofa and chairs. This weaving of colors from one room to another creates a visual link and ensures a nice flow from one room to another. An entry hall endures a lot of wear and tear as people enter and exit a home. So avoid selecting light or pale colors for the walls. Wallpaper is an advisable finish for this area, as long as the paper is thick; paper with a vinyl base is appropriate, too. Selecting wallpaper with a small or overall print will help conceal any scuffs that occur in daily use. Flooring material for an entry hall should be durable and easy to clean. Depending on where your home is located, keep in mind that outside elements will make their way inside: snow, mud, sand, dust. Most entry halls require an area rug to help soften the impact of foot traffic on the flooring. Here, too, select an area rug with an overall pattern and a multicolor background to avoid footprints and inevitable marks. Depending on ceiling height, your room may be able to carry a chandelier or lantern or a close-to-the-ceiling light fixture. However you do it, this room should be well lit. The final touches are the decorations and furnishings selected for this space. Tablescapes are important and should provide hints of the style and decor of the rest of the home. Some entry halls are wide enough to accommodate a round table as a centerpiece. This always looks better when topped by a floral arrangement, a piece of sculpture, or stacks and stacks of books. Entry halls that are tighter on space should at the very least feature a console topped by a mirror or significant work of art. Ultimately, entry halls and hallways are the perfect places to express your personality. Because they are small spaces, you can decorate them over and over again without breaking the bank. And the regular makeovers will keep your home looking fresh.

My Fairy Godfathers" is the brainchild of celebrity stylists, Andrew Ashton and Steven Anderson. Both fathers, Ashton and Anderson decided to recognize young women in their community who have overcome various hurdles at a young age. By utilizing their styling expertise, they're always excited to bring new joy and increased self-esteem to these female's lives. Each year, they have selected deserving candidates and allowed them to shine through beauty. For example, their pet project called “Make me a Supermodel,” provides the experience of a high-fashion photo shoot and transforms a lady into the cover of a newsstand magazine. Over the last three years, the celebrity styling duo has also granted high school girls with a oncein-a-lifetime prom experience. “We have been privileged to work with some amazing clients from around the world over the years, but numerous folks in our own backyard didn't have the same advantages. Its been incredibly rewarding to bring something new and positive to their lives and we will continue to make giving back one of our priorities," said Anderson. Each spring, Ashton and Anderson have worked with high school principals and counselors to nominate girls that they felt were deserving of a “Cinderella" experience. The only requirement was that they be a good student. The girls come from

all circumstances; abandonment, broken homes, financial hardships, lifethreatening illness to the tragic loss of a parent. The process starts with a surprise visit to the school by Andrew and Steven where they meet their new “Cinderella." Once she allows the susprise to sink in, she learns she'll be receiving not only a makeover for Prom night, but also a custom couture gown jewelry, transportation, dinner, flowers and finally that magic pair of Shoes! These incredible girls have even received lessons in walking in heels to ordering off an upscale restaurant menu. With the help of generous donors and merchants, we are able to give these girls and their dates a truly magical night. "This project has become very near and dear to our hearts and we are amazed watching these girls blossom from their makeovers. We feel like we're sending our own daughters off to prom! ince I was a little girl, I dreamt of the perfect Cinderella Prom. The thought of the perfect dress, perfect date, and complete make over was all I ever wanted. My dad, my hero, was going to grant me my wishes. We had a deal. I had the opportunity to graduate early my junior year of high school. But since my brother, Undre, was graduating the same year, my dad convinced me to stay in high school an extra year so I wouldn’t “take the shine” away from my brother. If I “took one for the team” like my dad would have said, he was going to reward me with the PERFECT prom. Well, plans changed when he was murdered this past December. It devastated me, it broke my heart. My best friend was gone, taken away from me. I gave up on everything. Prom was out of the question. When I found out about “The Fairy Godfather Project”, it was like a wish coming to reality. Something that you dream of, but in the back of your mind, you know it’ll never come true. A project that helps girls like me, receive the perfect Prom. They told me that they were going to custom design my dress, do my hair, make up, everything! My date and I, my girlfriend,

didn’t have to worry about anything. A weight lifted off my shoulders. Designing my dress was way harder then it seems! You think that you know what style and look you’re going for until you actually try it on and see the dress on you. Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted a ball gown styled dress. When I tried it on, it did nothing for my body, absolutely nothing. So, Steven and I designed a different style dress, something that I wouldn’t have imagined ever being my prom dress. But the most shocking and scariest thing was when Andrew and Steven told me that I wouldn’t be able to see my dress until the day of prom. I was terrified, but I put my trust into my Fairy God Fathers and hoped for the best. Going into Prom they made me feel like a princess with the spa day. But especially the day of prom, the pampering was on. I got the chance to let Andrew and Steven personally do my hair and makeup. OMG!! And they made me look absolutely beautiful and stunning. I couldn’t wait until the big reveal to show my girlfriend and family how amazing I looked. Especially to show off the dress that I fell in love with, after being scared of the out coming look. After the reveal, my date and I were treated to dinner at The Birchwood Hotel and it was to die for! And then we were chauffeured by Mr. Willie to my Perfect Cinderella Prom. Andrew and Steven gave me everything I dreamt of and more. They are truly two amazing people. I cannot describe in words how grateful I am for them. They gave me a memory that I would never forget and always cherish.

Through his ongoing training and work with Aquage, he became a natural choice to serve as the National Styles Director for the Healium Brand of hair care. Recently, they donated to The American Cancer Society, providing wigs for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Throughout the last two decades, Andrew has demonstrated his expertise to more than 8,000 artists, through educational programs to salons across the nation. Based on the success of this program and Andrew’s on-stage passion and charisma, Andrew was chosen to teach and lead similar programs at industry trade shows. Drawing global salon owners, hair care artists and design teams, audience numbers continue to reach 20,000+ at each show. In addition to his time creating looks at the salon, Andrew developed two trend collections a year, which he then presented to other industry professionals in advanced continuing education classes he lead. REDFISHING IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER BY CAPTAIN STEWART AMES
W
ith water temperatures already reaching into the high eighties, it’s important to consider two things when redfishing. First, fish will tend to be more active early and late in the day and second, fish will seek cover from the sun during the day. Those fishing either end of the day will be able to take advantage of more active fish and will also have to deal with less boat traffic. For anglers fishing “normal working hours…say 7:30 to 5:30…best success will likely be found during the higher phases of the tide. As waters push in, areas up against the mangroves and under residential docks become flooded. Along with providing shade for redfish, these areas also hold concentrations of their favorite foods…small crabs and baitfish…as well as protection from predators. Just fishing these areas does, by no means, assure that success will be had. To increase the likelihood of success, several things should be considered. First, presentation is critical. Although redfish are not too particular about what bait is presented, as they will eat a broad range of offerings, they will be particular about where it is presented. Since these fish are making a living in the shade during the day, getting baits up under the mangroves and under residential docks is important. Baits need to be those that can be cast with a high degree of accuracy and additionally, can be skipped. For those throwing artificials, Berkley Gulp Shrimp thrown on a jig head will meet both of these objectives. For those throwing live or dead natural baits, dense baits such as cut fish, with a split shot placed very close to the hook will accomplish the same thing.

Small pinfish are also a very good bait but won’t skip as well. Present these baits to the target area and then patiently wait. There is usually no mystery in a redfish bite, unless the fish eats the bait and swims straight at the angler. Otherwise, a slight bump is followed by a healthy tug. Since redfish will swallow a bait deep…down to the crusher plates in their throats… these fish usually stay on the hook. The second critical aspect to catching redfish during the heat is persistence. When waters are warm, redfish may slow down a little bit but the vast majority of fish that are found will eat. Normally, when a fisherman first puts out bait on a spot, if redfish are there, they will eat. So making the assump-
tion that, as a general rule, redfish will eat when given the opportunity, it would be logical to keep moving aggressively until fish are found. As of this writing, redfish that are being found are not gathered in huge schools, but are more likely to be found individually or in small groups. This further supports methodically working areas known to hold redfish but not “setting up camp” on any of them. By fishing numerous spots during the high tide phase, persistent anglers will be rewarded for their work by picking a few fish here and a few fish there. Like so many things in life, hard work is rewarded. Those willing to put in the time and move until fish are located will have the most success. Good luck and good fishing.

IS YOUR GRANITE SEALED PROPERLY? BY GENE MCDONALD

any people have decided to make a change. Some changed their health, some changed their Jobs, and now many seem to be changing their homes to make them feel healthier. Whether you decide to buy new countertops or refresh your existing ones, this article may give you a smile of insight. Let’s start out by saying where most of your foods are prepared. That is your kitchen countertops. I always ask when the last time your granite has been sealed and what has it been sealed with? Most care about the beauty of the stone and have no idea what sealer has been used. Let’s say you just bought a new home with beautiful granite tops. It may be shining, but what is making it shine? Are you willing to prepare a sandwich for your kid not knowing what that shiny liquid is? Granite is sold as a ‘Natural” product, but then to protect its beauty it’s sometime sealed with the cheapest toxic sealer on the market. Test your granite by putting a bead of water on top of it and time it. If the water is beading on there for awhile, it’s good. If it disappears into your Granite or Marble, then it’s bad and needs to be addressed. (I can Reseal your Granite and mention Panache for a 5% discount, Subscribe and get 10% discount) If your countertop fabricator tells you that you have to seal your tops every six months or year, just have some fun and test that, simply point out that this is your second home and you only visit this home every six months or a year. Do you really have to schedule a granite sealer every time you visit Florida? Then you cannot use the tops for 24 hours after sealer? At this point, the fabricator or sales rep will now start back peddling words as the realization of telling potential customers that they have to seal their countertops every 6 months does sound lame. You as the customer can just simply pat the fabricator on the back and ask for the premium penetrating sealer. There are many on the market today, these sealers are designed and tested to last 10-15 years. The sealer actually ‘Penetrates” the

open cracks and fissures. You also might want a copy of the label of sealer being used? You may also want to ask does this sealer protect from all stains or just certain type of stains. It’s very important to get a Care and maintenance sheet or access on online using the name of Stone you have. You also may want to know is it difficult to repair or remove scratches and stains. Stains may happen, let’s talk about stains. I will share with you some quick tips that may remove most natural stone stains. Let’s say you have a stain that you do not know what caused it. First of all never try to wipe out a stain that you know is already into the stone, Wiping it with a solution just seem to push this unwanted visitor deeper into the stone. What you may need is a poultice. This is a powder mixed to become a peanut butter type consistency. But what and where did the stain come from? Let’s try to figure it out, is the stain near a coffee maker? Near the stove after you cooked oily foods? Were you putting on makeup while making breakfast for the kids and set your lipstick down on the weakly sealed tops? Ok now we need to find some talc powder, whiting powder found at paint stores, or even your kid’s chalk is ok if you ground it into a powder. If you think it’s an oil based stain, try the powder mixed with baking soda and water, actually mix it and apply over the stain with a PLASTIC putty knife, let stand for about 30 hours, check it, you can always reapply. What we are trying to do here is literally SUCK the stain out. If you think the stain is organic like coffee or wine, you may mix another powdery concoction but rather than baking soda we will now mix in Hydrogen peroxide with the same application. Now ink please use bleach for light stones, dark stones you may try lacquer thinner mixed with the powder. Hope this helps in preserving your beautiful Natural Stone. I also hear many times about people putting Hot pots on granite, this is a big debate between many; this topic is how many were able to close the sale against other competitive materials. I am simply going to say I would not do it! If you countertop fabricator or sales rep says you can ask if they will warranty a stain or a scorch mark underneath the hot pot area and for how long will they warranty the statement they just told you? The debate is all over the place, I will simply give you things to think about and discuss with your fabricator or sales rep. If we have our Florida homes cooled off from our air conditioner, our tops tend to match the room temperature if not get colder, Now we lay a pot of boiling water or the like directly on the top, I sure hope one drop of soy sauce or oil was under that pot, because now you created a
impregnating stain machine into your top. Now let’s go back to you still not knowing what sealer was used, the Hot pot 10 “ diameter is now breaking down the last strands of integrity your sealer had. I never said a hot pot will crack your granite it can in time though, let’s move on, now that we literally burned off the sealer in that one spot. You still are using that same area for the landing pad of Hot pots. Now milk spills there, water, oil, you may even prepare chicken there, I wonder where all those liquids and chicken juices are going? Maybe just maybe they are going into your unsealed area of the top? No way! You say; because you wiped it, remember wiping stains only pushes them down. Another thing to think about is, Let’s say you have a nice grainy granite with beautiful fissures, and moisture gets down there and then the hot pot comes on top it actually heats up the moisture in the fissures and then could cause the granite to want to expand, if the stone is cold everywhere else in the house except where you put your hot pot, well then a crack may occur. I love the people of Tampa Bay and love the all the countertop fabricators in our area which most I know and I call my friends, I hope you find an incredible insightful countertop fabricator to make your buying decision have a smile of confidence. If you are unsure about your countertops, you can get some quotes of re-stripping the old sealer, sanitizing then resealing with a premium sealer. There are many countertop companies who offer a “Refresh” service. Please make sure you want premium service and sealer that lasts longer than a year.

s the Paleo diet a good idea? Should you eat like a caveman? "The Paleo Diet," a book by Loren Cordain, has been a best-seller since it was first published in 2002. Do a Google search for Paleo diet and there's no doubt of its popularity. It appeals to the notion that if modern lifestyles are causing health problems, the solution is to going back to the way things were. The Paleo diet attempts to replicate what humans ate in the Paleolithic period, which ended 12,000 years ago. In practice, the diet means eating grass-fed meats, fish and seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, nuts and seeds, and oils from nuts, seeds, olives, avocado and coconut. Paleo enthusiasts avoid cereal grains, legumes, dairy products, potatoes, refined vegetable oils, processed foods, sugar and commercial sweeteners and salt. The diet promises weight loss and improved health. Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter weighs

in on the diet: "The Paleo diet is not really the way people ate in the Paleolithic era," writes Zach Conrad, Ph.D. candidate in Tufts' Friedman School. "For several million years in the Paleolithic era, Homo sapiens weren't even around and fire had not been harnessed. Early humans would likely kill an animal and consume copious amounts, then go long periods without food. Gluttony followed by starvation is not a healthy lifestyle." He goes on to comment that the Paleo diet's avoidance of some foods, such as dairy products, actually runs counter to human evolution. However, the diet does have some healthy ideas -- avoiding processed foods, sugar and salt, and eating fruits and vegetables. A few small, short-term studies have shown the Paleo diet improves glucose control in people with Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors in those with metabolic syndrome. Most agree there isn't enough research on the Paleo diet and its potential impact over time. "It is not consistent with current dietary recommendations of USDA's My Plate," added Conrad. "When people try to eat a Paleo diet, they tend to deviate even further away from what is recommended. It becomes a license to eat a lot of meat." Most Paleo diets don't set any limits
for calories -- research finds that our early ancestors struggled to get adequate calories. Today, failing to limit calories in any dietary regimen can lead to weight gain and obesity. The bottom line is the Paleo diet may sound romantic -- living like our early ancestors and staying away from processed foods -- but it doesn't necessarily add up to a sound nutritional strategy. Q AND A Q: I've heard that flaxseed can help lower blood cholesterol, but I'm worried that it could pose breast cancer risk. What does current research say about this? A: The latest research shows that consuming flaxseed does not increase risk for breast cancer. At one time, there was concern that flaxseed's lignans, classified as phytoestrogens could raise the risk of breast cancers that are fueled by high levels of estrogen. Now studies show that although lignans' chemical structure is like estrogen, they don't act like estrogen in the body. In fact, research indicates flaxseed may be protective, especially in post-menopausal women. It seems to decrease cell growth, increase self-de-
struction of abnormal cells and shift estrogen metabolism to less cancer-promoting forms. As for heart health benefits, some studies do show that including four level tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily may lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and blood pressure, although we need more research to understand who benefits and how much is needed. Flaxseed does provide other valuable nutrients: It is concentrated in dietary fiber and contains the plant form of omega-3 fat known as alpha-linolenic acid. An additional benefit: Bacteria in our gut convert flaxseed's lignans into compounds with antioxidant effects. Do check with your doctor before beginning daily flaxseed if you take fish oil or EPA and DHA supplements or anticoagulant medicine. Also, if you are undergoing cancer treatment, discuss potential use with your care providers. If you take any prescription or nonprescription medicine, be sure to take flaxseed one hour before or two hours after to avoid blocking absorption of the medicine. Finally, if you're considering daily flaxseed, note that four tablespoons of ground flaxseed contain about 150 calories. Substitute it for some other food to avoid undesired weight gain, which would raise risk of both heart disease and cancer. Information courtesy of the American Institute for Cancer Research.

RECIPE This recipe for tilapia and summer vegetable packets, from Eating Well magazine, is a sure way to get moist, tender fish. You can put the foil packets on the grill or in the oven. TILAPIA AND SUMMER VEGETABLE PACKETS • 1 cup quartered cherry or grape tomatoes • 1 cup diced summer squash • 1 cup thinly sliced red onion • 12 green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces • 1/4 cup pitted and coarsely chopped black olives • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil • 1 teaspoon capers, rinsed • 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, divided • 1 pound tilapia fillets, cut into 4 equal portions Preheat grill to medium. Combine tomatoes, squash, onion, green beans, olives, lemon juice, oregano, oil, capers, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a large bowl. Set aside. To make a packet, lay two 20-inch sheets of foil on top of each other (the double layers will help protect the con-
tents from burning); generously coat the top piece with cooking spray. Place one portion of tilapia in the center of the foil. Sprinkle with some of the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper, then top with about 3/4 cup of the vegetable mixture. Bring the short ends of the foil together, leaving enough room in the packet for steam to gather and cook the food. Fold the foil over and pinch to seal. Pinch seams together along the sides. Make sure all the seams are tightly sealed to keep steam from escaping. Repeat with more foil, cooking spray and the remaining fish, salt, pepper and vegetables. Grill the packets until the fish is cooked through and the vegetables are just tender, about 5 minutes. To serve, carefully open both ends of the packets and allow the steam to escape. Use a spatula to slide the contents onto plates. Oven Variation: Preheat oven to 425F. Place green beans in a microwavable bowl with 1 tablespoon water. Cover and microwave on High until the beans are just beginning to cook, about 30 seconds. Drain and add to the other vegetables (Step 2). Assemble packets (Steps 3-4). Bake the packets directly on an oven rack until the tilapia is cooked through and the vegetables are just tender, about 20 minutes. Serves 4. Per serving: 181 calories; 8 g carbohydrates, 24 g protein, 7 g fat; 57 mg cholesterol; 2 g fiber; 435 mg sodium.

ADDED SUGAR SURPRISES BY CHARLYN FARGO
S
ugar is now the ingredient to avoid -- especially added sugar. Now for the first time, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is recommending limiting added sugars to no more than 10 percent of daily calories. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is now proposing a separate listing for added sugars in its updated Nutrition Facts Panel. The bottom line is there is no benefit from high intakes of added sugar and for most people there are adverse effects. The problem is that sugar can be disguised by many names. Just a note of clarification -- all sugars, whether naturally occurring or added, affect the body similarly, according to Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter (June 2015).

The reasons so much focus is on "added" sugars is because they don't come with additional nutrients, especially when consumed as soft drinks or candy. By contrast, fruits have (natural) sugar, but they also deliver fiber, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. Americans average 475 calories a day from added sugars or a whopping 123 grams, according to Tufts. That's the equivalent of 30 teaspoons of sugar. The new guidelines will recommend that Americans eat less than half that amount -- 51 grams of added sugar. Cutting back on sugary soft drinks and other sweetened beverages, eating less candy and baked goods is a start to reducing added sugars. But added sugars are in some other foods that frequent our grocery lists as well. Here is a list of some foods that often have a surprisingly high amount of added sugars: Tomato sauces (10 to 15 grams per half cup); salad dressings (3 grams per tablespoon); ketchup and barbecue sauces (3.6 grams per tablespoon for ketchup and 8 grams per tablespoon
for barbecue sauce); cereals (10-15 grams per serving for oat brans, oat and wheat squares and granolas); granola bars (up to 20 grams per bar); and frozen entrees (chicken pot pie at 4 grams per serving, lasagna at 6 grams and honey roasted turkey breast at 9 grams of sugars. One of the best ways to cut back on added sugars is to cook more at home where you have the choice of what ingredients are added. Q AND A Q: Is it true that drinking tea with milk keeps you from absorbing the healthful substances in tea? A: Although it's possible that you will get more of whatever health benefits can come from tea by drinking it without milk added, if you prefer your tea with milk, research is not strong enough to suggest that you change your habit. Proteins in dairy and soymilk do seem to bind and form a complex with tea's polyphenol compounds, which potentially reduce health benefits of drinking tea. However, with black tea,
the few human studies there are suggest that adding milk does not make a difference to the amount or availability of tea's beneficial compounds. In one human trial with green tea, although ECGC, green tea's most-researched compound, was not completely blocked, it was reduced about 30 percent. However, the milk did not decrease the absorption of all types of catechin polyphenols found in green tea. More research is needed to understand how beneficial tea is for heart health and reduced cancer risk. In cell and animal studies, tea's compounds seem to inhibit cancer development at several stages: decreasing tumor growth, increasing self-destruction of cancer cells and restraining ability of cancer cells to spread. But population studies are inconsistent; AICR's review of the global research found evidence too limited to draw any conclusions about tea and cancer risk. Many questions remain about how choice of tea, its brewing time and methods, and differences among people drinking it may all influence its effects. As long as you aren't choosing one of the

RECIPE When we think of rhubarb, we usually think of a pie, but it works well in a crumble as well. Try this rhubarb-raspberry crumble from Eating Well magazine for a great summer dessert.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Coat a 9-by13 inch pan with cooking spray. To prepare filling: Combine rhubarb, raspberries, sugar, cornstarch and vanilla in the prepared baking dish. Let stand while you make topping. To prepare topping: Combine all-purpose flour, rye flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl. Pinch butter into the flour mixture with your fingertips until it is pea-sized. Squeeze a handful of dough firmly in palm, then crumble it coarsely over the rhubarb mixture. Continue with the rest of the mixture until the fruit is evenly covered. Sprinkle with pecans. Bake until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown, about 50 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serves 10. (serving size: 2/3 cup). Per serving: 281 calories, 3 g protein, 39 g carbohydrate, 14 g fat, 24 mg cholesterol, 4 g fiber, 173 mg sodium.
RHUBARB-RASPBERRY CRUMBLE Filling • 8 cups sliced rhubarb (1/2 inch; about 2 pounds) fresh for frozen (thawed) • 1 1/2 cups raspberries, fresh or frozen (thawed) • 2/3 cup sugar • 2 tablespoons cornstarch • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Topping • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup rye flour • 6 tablespoons packed brown sugar

DIET AND OVARIAN CANCER BY CHARLYN FARGO
T
wo of my dear friends died from ovarian cancer, so it's with great interest when I see headlines that say certain diets prevent ovarian cancer. In fact, more than 21,000 women in the U.S. may get a diagnosis of ovarian cancer this year, according to Environmental Nutrition newsletter. Unfortunately, because there are few symptoms at early stages, the disease only has a 45 percent survival rate. Can diet play a role? Only if that diet reduces excess body fat. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, obesity increases levels of hormones, and causes chronic inflammation, that can contribute to cancer development. There are plenty of "promises" that so-called superfoods will fight ovarian

cancer. In reality, there is little researchbacked support for eating habits that reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. HERE ARE A FEW MYTHS DEBUNKED: 1. Dairy foods have been blamed for increased risk of ovarian cancer, but overall research does not show that limiting consumption or changing particular choices offers protection. Some studies suggest that lactose, the natural sugar in dairy products, changes levels of ovaryrelated hormones; others question dairy fat. However a major report from AICR concluded that data was too limited to show any link between ovarian cancer and lactose or any dairy products. Another major study in Nutrition and Cancer reached the same conclusion. 2. Soy foods have been touted to lower risk of ovarian cancer in population studies in Asia, but studies in Europe and the U.S. show no link. Studies have suggested that you may gain more benefit from including soy earlier in life. Overall, evidence isn't strong enough to prove definitive ovarian cancer protection from soy.
3. A few large population studies have linked less ovarian cancer to greater intake of cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and kale. However, recent studies have showed no benefit. But go ahead and eat your veggies -- plant foods should always be part of a diet to lower cancer risk. 4. In cell and animal studies, green tea's polyphenol compounds seem to inhibit ovarian and some other cancers. Small human studies suggest tea may promote the body's antioxidant defenses, however large population studies have failed to find that tea is linked with ovarian cancer. For now, tea (green or black) is an excellent no-calorie beverage choice. The bottom line: To reduce your cancer risk, it's best to create a long-term lifestyle of nutrient-rich foods that allow you to fill up without excess calories. Go for healthy portion sizes, limit sweets and keep active. Q AND A Q: Does the recommendation for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day apply even to older adults? A: Yes, in fact, if you're an older adult, regular physical activity is among
the most important things you can do for your health. Keeping active reduces risk of cancer and other chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. What's more, the American College of Sports Medicine cites strong evidence that physical activity supports psychological well-being and brain function, and may reduce risk of dementia. Regular physical activity helps maintain the ability to live independently, reducing risk of dangerous falls and keeping muscles strong enough to continue day-to-day activities. If you're 65 years of age or older, are generally fit and have no limiting health conditions, you can follow the recommendations to get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week (30 minutes at least five days a week), or 75 minutes of vigorous activity weekly. Getting an hour a day or more of moderate activity is even better. In addition to this aerobic activity that gets your heart rate up a little, the ACSM says there's strong evidence that for middle age and older adults to maintain muscle, they need to do some sort of muscle-strengthening (resistance training) exercises two or more days a week. It's important to work all major muscle groups

(legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms). For people with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions who can also benefit from regular exercise, talk with your doctor to make a plan for physical activity that is right for you. Physical activity helps people with high blood pressure and may help improve balance problems. If you've been sedentary, start with blocks of 5 to 10 minutes of moderate activity and build up. RECIPE This recipe for walnut chicken with basil is from "Healthy in a Hurry" by Williams Sonoma. It's loaded with protein and other nutrient without a lot of calories or carbs. WALNUT CHICKEN WITH BASIL • 1/2 cup walnut pieces • 3 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 2 tablespoons honey • 3 teaspoons peanut oil
• 2 red bell pepper, seeded and thinly sliced • 2 large shallots, thinly sliced • 3 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, thinly sliced across the grain • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, torn into pieces Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread walnuts on a baking sheet and toast until lightly browned, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a plate to cool. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, lime juice and honey. Set aside. Heat 1 1/2 teaspoons of oil in a wok over high heat. Add bell pepper and cook just until wilted, 1-2 minutes. Transfer bell pepper to a plate and add remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons oil to pan. Add shallots and cook, stirring constantly, until just beginning to brown, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add chicken to pan with shallots and cook, stirring often, until opaque throughout, 3 to 4 minutes. Return bell pepper to pan and stir in soy-sauce mixture, basil and walnuts. Toss and stir just until basil is wilted, about 1 minute longer. Serves 4. Per serving: 310 calories, 26 g protein, 17 g carbohydrate, 16 g fat, 70 mg cholesterol, 2 g fiber, 530 mg sodium.

arriage is all about sharing -- and one of the things shared is health. A new study shows that as couples get older, the health of one partner can have a significant effect on the other. "When we think about quality of life for older adults, and improving quality of life, it seems like targeting the individual is only part of the story," said David Sbarra, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arizona. "Our findings suggest that for older adults, a larger part

of individual well-being is defined by our partner's health and cognitive functioning, as well." Sbarra and colleagues studied more than 8,000 married couples, all 50 years or older, over a six-year period. They looked at markers for both physical and mental health. They found both genders were affected equally. If a husband was ailing, the wife's quality of life was affected; if the wife was sick, the husband's quality of life was affected. The researchers say the findings have broad social significance, given the aging demographics of America and rising health care costs. "As we build public health interventions for our aging population when it comes to quality of life, we need to take a more dyadic approach,
looking at both partners," Sbarra said. In other words, one spouse may be hurting, but the other spouse is also feeling the pain. A WHIRLWIND TRIP TO PERU BY VICTOR BLOCK
I
t was going to be a whirlwind trip. I'd be visiting two of Peru's most famous and tantalizing attractions in four days flat. It would be a study in contrasts, starting with the archeological wonder of Machu Picchu and finishing with the mysterious jungle of the Amazon. I would be going from 8,000 feet to 600 feet, from cool and rainy to hot and steamy, from mountain vistas to lush jungle. Yes, it would have been nice if I had more time, but I didn't, and I was prepared to make the most of the time I did have. So armed with my cameras and a good pair of walking shoes, I was ready to roll. The only way to get to Machu Picchu is by train either from Cusco or Ollantaytambo. It's a scenic and relaxing ride and stops at Aguas Caliente, the town that sits at the bottom of the hillside road that winds up to Machu Picchu. When the train pulled into the station I gathered up my belongings and walked a short distance past stalls selling souvenirs to the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

The buildings at this lovely property are scattered around 12 acres of lush greenery and colorful flowers. The hotel offers a number of activities, including a nature walk and bird-watching, but I opted for what was advertised at a uniquely Andean spa experience. This included a purification session in the hotel's Andean sauna and various treatments using the famous Peruvian coca leaf. The coca leaf and tea made from coca leaves are said to help lowlanders acclimate to Peru's loftier regions, such as Machu Picchu. But the coco leaf is also one of the essential elements of the magical, religious and medicinal rituals of the Andean tradition and is known to be a natural stimulant. Thought to help detoxify and improve the body's circulation, they were used for my body wrap, while coca oil and cream were used during my heavenly relaxing massage. It was sprinkling when I finished my treatment, which gave me a perfect excuse to take a short nap. The rain beginning to intensify by the time I went to dinner. As I sipped a chilled white wine and savored a quinoa and corn souffle, a hotel guide gave us the lowdown on the morning trip to Machu Picchu. Another photographer and I agreed to meet at 5:30 the next morning in front of
the gift shop in order to catch the first bus up to Machu Picchu to catch the sunrise. However, when the black sky and steady rain convinced us that sunrise was not going to happen, we headed instead to the restaurant for a cup of coffee. When we hopped on the 6 o'clock bus it was still raining, and the locals were doing a landoffice business selling cheap plastic raincoats. But even in the rain and fog Machu Picchu was an impressive sight to behold. In rain ponchos, our cameras wrapped in plastic, we walked around the remains of a site built centuries before. One of the benefits of the less-than-ideal weather was that the place was not crawling with tourists. We were able to savor the atmosphere and revel in the otherworldly and mystical feeling of this ancient Incanbuilt complex in relative peace and quiet. After a couple of hours the rain stopped and bits of blue sky peeked out from the clouds that floated around the mountains and ruins. It was lovely, but my stay was short, and all too soon I was on the train headed to Cusco. After an all-too-brief stay in this beautiful colonial city, I was on my way to the airport to start the second leg of my whirlwind Peru journey. Just the mere mention of the Amazon made my mind race to the darkly intrigu-
ing, mysterious and exotic. I envisioned a steamy, lush jungle setting that was home to everything from huge slithering snakes to fantastic bird life and from chattering monkeys to large black crocodiles. It has been on my got-to-go list for eons, so I was really looking forward to my second and final Peru adventure. At the airport I boarded a flight to Puerto Maldonado, the closest airport to my final destination, the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion. As we got close to landing all I could see out of the window was a blanket of green. I exited the plane and was assailed by a blast of hot and humid air. Fortunately transportation from the airport to the river was in what looked like an open-air truck bed with seats. After a short ride I climbed into a boat and headed for the lodge. Adjacent to the lower Madre de Dios River region of Tambopata National Reserve, the hotel's grounds are part of a tropical rainforest that is characterized by high annual rainfall, dense plant growth and warm temperatures. It is said that two-thirds of the world's plant and animal species make their homes in these jungle regions, with many more waiting to be discovered. The Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion is built on the grounds of a former cacao and

rubber plantation and located within more than 2,000 acres of national rainforest. This rainforest acts as a buffer zone between Tambopata National Park Reserve and the shores of the Madre de Dios River. My quarters for the next couple of days consisted of a little stand-alone cottage surrounded by lush greenery and exotic, brightly colored flowers. Inside was a bedroom, bath and screened-in sitting area with views of more greenery and other cottages. After lunch, Carlos, one of the lodge's naturalist guides, took some of the guests out on a nature walk. He educated us about some of the local flora and fauna, while we watched chattering monkeys swing from the trees high about our heads. Before dinner we went for a boat trip in the hopes of seeing one of the elusive alligator-related black caiman. Unfortunately they weren't appearing for us, but we did get an introduction to the blinding thunderstorms typical of the region. Back at the lodge we sipped pisco sours and chose the next morning's tour. A number of people opted for the four-mile hike to Sandoval Lake. Since mud was promised, participants were outfitted with knee-high Wellington rubber boots and told to show up the next morning at 6:30 sharp. I've slogged through knee deep
mud before and had no interest in repeating the experience, so I opted for a canoe ride around the lodge's small private lake where I could photograph bird life. It turned out the hike was not four miles but more like six, and the mud was even more impressive than advertised. I was very happy with my choice and with the photos I managed to shoot during the leisurely paddle around the lake. By afternoon the rain had started again, but that didn't stop me from my final Amazon adventure -- taking the muchtalked-about canopy walk. Dressed in a waterproof poncho, I climbed up one of the 115-foot observation towers and proceeded to cautiously navigate the seven swaying bridges, outfitted with special cables and lateral mesh, that hung suspended over the forest floor. Not much beats walking among the treetops in the Peruvian Amazon -- a fitting finale to my whirlwind trip to fabulous Peru.
