WHAT DO DOCTORS DO WHEN THEY HAVE NECK OR BACK PAIN?
L
ast month, a local orthopedic doctor came into our office looking for a solution. He said that he had seen too many patients with failed back surgery and when he started experiencing low back pain and sciatica, he was NOT willing to even consider surgery as an option. After hearing from a few of our patients that our non-surgical spinal decompression saved them from surgery, he was interested to learn more. Every single patient that walks through our doors, regardless of background, undergoes an extensive consultation, thorough review of MRI’s, and a full set of x-rays if they are medically necessary. Only then do we determine whether or not they are a good candidate for non-surgical spinal decompression and make the decision of whether or not to take on their case.
ARE YOU OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE?
If you experience any of the following in your neck or back then most likely you are suffering due to a bulging or herniated disc: • Back pain due to sciatica • Sleepless nights • Back or neck injury as the result of an accident • Back or leg pain when seated • Numbness in your hands or toes • Degenerative disc disease • Herniated and bulging discs • Toothache like pain that goes down your leg or in one of your buttocks DRX9000
Dr. Carl Conforti, D.C. Dr. Todd Bodanza, D.C. & Dr. Damien Rogers, D.C.
• Relapse of neck or back pain following surgery
FINALLY, A SOLUTION!
• Most patients that come to us with herniated and bulging discs tell the same story. They have been given a few options: • Deal with the pain • Physical Therapy • Exercise • Pain Medications • Harmful Shots • Painful Surgery The majority of the people who come to our office have tried one or 3 of these options or are afraid to try anything because of the side effects. Whichever situation you have found yourself in, you owe it to yourself to learn more about our State of the Art Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression treatment for neck and back pain sufferers caused by bulging, herniated, or squashed discs.
HOW DOES THE MACHINE WORK?
Last time you were in excruciating pain, you probably thought to yourself “I wish someone could grab my arms and legs and pull me apart and everything would feel so much better.” Well the team of scientists, neurosurgeons, and engineers that developed the DRX9000 came up with just that. A machine that stretches the discs to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc caus-
ing the herniation to suck back in. In our offices, we have treated thousands of patients with our non-surgical DRX with remarkable results. There are only a small percentage of people that are not right for our treatment, and with your complimentary consultation, we will determine if your case is right.
SINCE WE ARE DETERMINED TO PUT AN END TO UNNECESSARY NECK AND BACK SURGERIES, WE ARE OFFERING
THE FREE BULGING AND HERNIATED DISC ASSESSMENT
($195 VALUE)
NO CHARGE AT ALL!! And we WILL determine if you qualify for this state of the art technology. We do not let anyone leave our office wondering if our treatment could have helped you get rid of your pain. During your candidate assessment, we will target all of the factors necessary to qualify you for the treatment that will save you from harmful shots and surgeries. THE PATIENT AND ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT FOR ANY OTHER SERVICE, EXAMINATIONS OR TREATMENT WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE DISCOUNTED SERVICE.

he warmth of the spring time sun brings a new awakening to the sleepy world of winter. “Yes Virginia” it was a warmer than anticipated winter but spring sets a new tone for the rest of the year. Have you given thought to the one person who is usually last on the list for esthetics improvements? Well you need to take the bull by the horns and set yourself obtainable goals that you can follow and achieve. It may be weight loss, it may be exercise it may even be a new “hair style” or even a new smile. There have been many studies that have shown people with a beautiful smile are more trusted, seem to be friendlier, thought to be more intelligent and by far happier than their “poor

Now there are Lingual braces (behind the teeth) Ceramic braces (tooth colored) Gold braces (plated in a 24K gold alloy) and even clear non bracket aligners. Like everything else in life they all have their own nuances and limitations. Orthodontics is continually striving to deliver the best smile with a minimum of visual impediment during treatment. So remember if you have been thinking of getting that “fantastic smile” take that first step and make an appointment for a no charge Orthodontic exam. MAXIMIZING YOUR CHIROPRACTIC CARE
C
hiropractic is defined as “a form of alternative medicine that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the belief that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system.”
TRADITIONAL CARE DOES NOT MAKE THE PATIENT WELL
It is estimated that doctors of chiropractic treat more than 30 million people annually. Today, doctors of chiropractic comprise the third largest group of doctorate-level primary-care providers in the nation, next to medical doctors and dentists. Chiropractic care has grown exponentially in the United States, but with
8
PANACHE VUE’
that growth, we have seen an increase in chiropractors who have lost focus on truly healing and promoting health and wellness in the community. Many doctors focus on pain relief and do not spend time providing patients with the knowledge of being well. Traditional chiropractic care strives to remove pain and limited range of motion through manipulations and modalities like electric muscle stimulation and ultrasound. Patients are treated until the pain is eliminated and then they are released from care. The problem with this traditional treatment plan is that the underlying cause of the pain is not eliminated and the pain eventually returns.
CORRECTIVE CARE LEAVES LASTING RESULTS
We see patients in our office daily that say that they have treated with another chiropractor for the same condition in the past. Typically, we find that they received a few adjustments and stopped with care as soon as they “felt” better. The problem with that is that only 10% of the nervous system is programmed to identify pain. So just because you do not feel the pain does not mean that there is not an interference. Our focus in our offices is full “corrective care.” Corrective care realigns the spine, restores the curves, and focuses on maximizing your lifestyle through proper nutrition and lifestyle. This type of care is unique in that it corrects the cause, re-
moves the interference, and maximizes function. Corrective care is not for treating spinal pain alone. Our patients do not just walk in, get adjusted, and walk out. We engage our patients in corrective therapies before and after care and provide each patient with at home exercises to maintain health and wellness everyday not just the days they are coming to see us. In addition to that, we also truly believe in whole health, so we include nutrition information and physical activity as part of our patients overall care. Additionally, we implement 5 essential lifestyle adjustments that allow our patients to function at 100%. Our bodies are naturally built to fight disease and build health, and by teaching our patients to eliminate the interferences that prevent that from happening we are providing whole health corrective care. The 5 essentials we focus on with every patient include: Maximized Mind-- A Maximized Mind encompasses areas such as time and stress management, improving your relationships with others, and making sure that you get adequate amounts of sleep. Working on all of these area’s help to improve a negative attitude and help your overall peace and well-being from within yourself. The right, renewed mindset about life and health are necessary in order to commit to following any lifestyle plan. Maximized Nerve Supply-- Nerve
supply is the life supply to all cells, organs, and systems in the body and so is responsible for all function and healing. Improper spinal alignment is common and likely to happen due to the amount of physical, emotional, and chemical stress you apply to your body every day so must be addressed as the foundational part of living at your health potential. Maximized Nutrition-- What you put into your body affects how you feel each and every day. Food is the fuel that your body needs to continue to power and heal itself on a daily basis. Diets that are high in carbohydrates, have pH or omega-3 imbalances or are nutrient deficient, have negative effects not only on your body, but can create a lot of symptoms such as depression, brain fog, stress and fatigue. Maximized Oxygen-- Exercise allows your body to take in higher levels of oxygen and creates lean muscle that keeps both your body and mind healthy. Studies have shown that exercise consistently match or exceed the benefits of antidepressants. This is your opportunity to decrease fat and increase lean muscle tissue. Minimizing Toxins-- Toxins and chemicals surround us in our everyday lives and are included in items such as medications, refined foods, household cleaners and the items we cook with! Each of these toxins affect our bodies in a negative way and inhibit us from functioning at optimal levels.

A NEW WAY TO AGE
O
ver the last ten years I have dedicated my life to empower- ing my patients’ lives through nutritional counseling and lifestyle modification. During these years, we have been successful in changing and improving thousands of lives. My passion to educate, motivate and empower my patients fuels my constant quest to understand, investigate and bring forth the newest and brightest scientifically based opportunities to our practice. I am constantly reviewing the literature, César A. Lara, M.D. attending seminars and keeping an open mind to a very complex and challenging disease, obesity. Our purpose is not only to help someone lose their excess weight, but more importantly, support them in main- taining a balanced and healthy lifestyle. It is clear to me that on top of the behav- ioral and social reasons that are
www.PanacheVue.com
prevalent in our society to predispose one to obesity, the culprit in our bodies is a dysfunctional endocrine system. It comes as no surprise that insulin resistance, fueled by a high, re- fined carbohydrate diet is center stage. However, despite a conscientious decision by many to adjust their nutri- tion and live a healthier lifestyle, they still have a constant complaint of chal- lenging and persistent belly fat; which is commonly associated with a decrease in energy, a slow metabolism, a decrease in sexual desire and activity, difficulty sleeping, and nonspecific but noticeable memory problems. Many women express challenging night sweats along with an increased sense of anxiety or feeling frustrated a lot more easily. The problem here is, again, a dysfunctional endocrine system. As we age, it is a natural process that our youthful, hormonal levels decrease. Hormones control virtually all of the functions of the body including our reproductive, immune and metabolic systems. Hormones have a direct role in controlling our overall physical and mental health. As the levels decline we begin to
lose our energy, vitality and health. By restoring these levels, it is now possible to restore our energy and to strengthen and bolster our bodies as well as our minds. Hormone replacement is not a panacea. It will not reverse aging, nor keep us permanently at one age. We will continue to age but we can slow down the precipitous decline that occurs at mid-life. There will be no sudden failing of our physical and mental health. There will be a gradual transition that would be significantly less noticeable than it would otherwise bewithout the hormone replenishment. To enjoy this benefit, we simply need to replenish the hormones that occur naturally in our bodies and boost them back up with bioidentical hormones to the appropriate, medically sound levels to maintain optimal health and vigor. When all deficient hormone levels are replen- ished, they produce a synergistic effect; hence, creating a balance where optimalhealth is achieved. Which hormones to replenish, howmuch to replenish them, how to adjust each to achieve that optimal synergistic effect is individually based and is the art and science of natural hormone replacement medicine which I practice and now provide for my patients. Cesar A. Lara, M.D. César A. Lara, M.D. is Board Certified in Obesity Medicine as well as certified in Advanced Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy by Worldlink Medical, the Academy for Preventative and Innovative Medicine. For more than 25 years, it has been Dr. Lara’s passion to become a positive force in America’s ever-growing obesity crisis…one patient at a time. Dr. Lara’s dream of helping men and women overcome diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and other chronic conditions related to obesity was realized with the emergence of the César A. Lara, MD; Center for Weight Management as a premier weight loss center in Tampa Bay. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Lara is known for his strong personal faith and his generous contributions to the Tampa Bay community. I know when it’s all done everything that looks dead and dreary now will look lively and healthy again! I have always believed in a fit & healthy lifestyle. As I approach my 60th year I feel now more than ever diet, exercise and paying attention to my health is crucial to enjoying the years that
are ahead of me. You too can take control of both your physical and oral health. Take a look in the mirror- do you like what you see? Do you look and feel healthy? Ask yourself, “How am I feeling today?” Listen to your body and act on the answers you get to these questions. As a routine in our hygiene department we review each patient’s health care history and take their blood pressure. It’s amazing how many people don’t realize how important this is. On more than one occasion we have saved a patient’s life and prevented a stroke or heart attack. In life we all make choices based on our time and finances - many of us postpone dental visits. Dental disease is progressive and unfortunately waiting usually does make conditions worse and more costly. Gum disease , for example , can lead to tooth extractions and a bridge, dentures, crowns or implants. Yet caught early, it is easy to
treat, controllable and definitely more affordable. Not only that, but the links to gum disease and systemic illnesses are strong and may include heart disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, cancers and a host of inflammatory disorders including arthritis. Whether you’re thinking about putting off your dental appointment because of time, finances or because you’re fearful about visiting the dentist, we’re here to listen and to help you. The choices you make today will save your money, your smile and more importantly, your health. We read everywhere how the government will be taking control of our healthcare. Now is the time for you to take control of your health. Visit both your physician and your dentist – we’re here for you. ip enhancement isn’t anything new, but a new addition to the filler category is set to change how lips are treated. Bye-bye duck lips. Arrevedici smokers’ lines. Adios bar codes or other pesky mouth wrinkles that make us look like our grandmothers. Meet Restylane Silk, the first FDA approved filler for lip enhancement and the smoothing of wrinkles and lines around the mouth. At first glance, Restylane Silk appears very similar to other hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers—specifically, Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, and Voluma. And they are similar in that they are all clear gel formulations of hyaluronic acid—a sugar that is naturally present in your skin. So, how is Restylane Silk different from the rest? Fillers can be manufactured with different viscosities and Silk is composed of smaller and smoother particles than the above-mentioned fillers. The smaller particles allow practitioners to use

an ultra-fine needle, making it ideal for smooth contouring and filling in fine lines. “Thicker fillers require deeper injections, commonly resulting in over-correction,” explains Dana Martinez, owner of Lecada Medical Artistry. “We’ve all seen that look, especially with inexperienced injectors. Silk is placed very superficially in lip or skin, not in muscle, eliminating the chance of lumpiness or excess fullness.” Additionally, Silk’s formula includes the anesthetic, lidocaine. The lip is one of the most sensitive areas of the body, and the combination of the tiny needle and the inclusion of lidocaine alleviates any pain or discomfort during injection. Depending on the treatment area, the procedure takes 5-30 min with minimal downtime. Any swelling or redness typically fades within a few hours. Because the lips are in constant motion, longevity has always been a problem for fillers in that area. Previous products often lasted only three to four months in

lips versus six months in smile lines. In the FDA clinical trial of Restylane Silk, which involves 221 mostly female patients, 98 percent had visible improvement 14 days after injection, and 76 percent still had lip improvement at six months. Silk’s safe, subtle, long-lasting results earned it the FDA’s first and only approval for lip enhancement and the treatment of perioral (around the mouth) lines. Notice, that’s lip “enhancement”, not augmentation. Martinez said, “Our patients are asking for more natural looking fillers and Silk delivers. It’s the perfect tool for gentle refining, lip-shaping, and smoothing lines. Silk allows for actually restoring the volume lost over time—restoring YOUR natural lip, NOT someone else’s.”

This non-profit organization was incorporated in 1949 and represents the oldest professional artists’ group in Florida. FLAG members are selected by a jury, and the organization is comprised “of artists whose work has attained national or state-wide recognition.” The purpose statement for the group “is to stimulate attainment of the highest standards of creative art within the state of Florida.” Each year, FLAG hosts its exhibition and symposium at a different cultural institution around the state. LRMA last showcased FLAG’s events in 2009. Many of FLAG’s members are art educators and several St. Petersburg College faculty members are among its awardwinning participants. This spring, LRMA will present Jewish Life: Prints from the Collection, an exhibition of works that focus on the theme of Jewish life. Created by artists known for their depictions of Jewish customs and cultural identity, many of the prints reflect nostalgia for times past. For Jews in the Diaspora, it is shared history, literature and custom as well as religious belief and practice that creates a feeling of community and belonging. Some of the artists represented in the exhibition include: Samuel Cahan (American, 1886-1974); Amram Ebgi (Moroccan/Israeli, b. 1939); Chaim Gross (Austrian/American, 1904-1991); Zalman Kleinman (Russian/American, 1904-1995) and Ira Moskowitz (Polish, b. 1912-2001). During the exhibition’s run, several significant Jewish holidays and observances will occur, including Purim on Mar. 5, Yom HaShoah on April 16, and Pesach and Shavuot on May 24-25.

BEAUTY
ANDREW ASHTON LaPosh Salon Dear Nina,
Andrew Ashton LaPosh Salon
Dear Andrew Ashton, I have naturally curly and frizzy hair. I get tired of having to flat iron or blow it out straight. I love the color and haircut my Stylist gives me, but I'm wondering if there is a way to wear my curls without the frizziness? Yours truly, Nina Panache Vue Editor
First off, I'm glad you love your hair color and cut! I love working with naturally curly hair. Natural curl hair can have a frizzy look if it doesn't contain the proper products and isn't styled correctly. Curly hair needs moisture in order to curl. Start by using a great moisture-based shampoo and conditioner. This serves as the foundation for reducing frizz. After you've shampooed and conditioned your hair, towel dry your hair without "roughing" the hair up too much. Squeeze the towel on hair instead of rubbing out the excess water. Smooth hair has cuticles that lay very flat where as dry hair has cuticles layers that are lifted which causing frizz. If the hair gets dry too quickly, make sure you mist down with water before blowing out. I'd recommend starting off with a silicone or oil-based product. On fine hair, apply this product to mid-shaft down to ends. If
you have more coarse hair, you can apply from roots to ends. Once you have applied, take and comb the product through to evenly distribute. If you would like a bit firmer curl, use a cream or a 'not too sticky' based gel and apply in the same fashion as the first product. Ensure you only apply both products to wet hair. pring is in the air with thoughts of more outside activities and to both looking and being fit. Springs are literally how one gets fit with Pilates. Most of the equipment used in the Pilates exercise (Reformer, Cadillac / Tower, the various Chairs, PedOPull, Toe Corrector and Foot Corrector) all utilize springs By Patricia Welter, B.S. PMA®-CPT, to offer both resistance and Lolita San Miguel Pilates Master™, assistance. The springs assist in Second Generation Pilates Teacher, creating oppositional resistance Balanced Body Faculty and Suncoast and to create length and space Pilates Owner in the vertebrae, legs and arms, improving posture, strength and flexibility all at the same time. The Pilates exercise system, originally called Contrology by creator Joseph Pilates and later named in his honor, has been around for almost one hundred years, and is a proven regimen. Back in the time Joseph Pilates was growing up in Europe, springs were used in the physical culture at the time and were found in gyms. In additional to creating floor exercises to be performed on a raised mat, Joe designed and patented several pieces of equipment on which to perform his exercise system. He was actually quite brilliant in his inventions, working with clients from professional athletes to individuals with injuries. Pilates exercises can be performed lying, sitting, kneeling and standing, with the equipment offering both support as well as challenge. Pilates trims, tones and sculpts all at the same time, yielding slimmer waistlines, hips and thighs while increasing strength in arms, legs and torso. Pilates is a full body exercise, each time working all muscles throughout the workout. When seeking to do Pilates, find a trained, experienced Pilates instructor to learn the proper form. One can perform Pilates on the floor (called mat exercise). However to experience Pilates fully, one should work on all the Pilates equipment to yield the results Joe Pilates intended. To become a comprehensively trained Pilates instructor, one goes through a rigorous minimum of 480 hours of training. Look for an instructor who is versed in teaching a client on all of the Pilates equipment and is comprehensively trained and certified. Suncoast Pilates has some of the area’s most highly comprehensively trained Pilates instructors in the Tampa Bay area. Suncoast Pilates is also a Pilates instructor training facility, where Pilates instructors come from around the world to be instructors. Would you trust your body to anyone less?

Dali Hernandez is the Creative Director and head designer for House of Dali. She is also a Real Estate Agent operating in the Tampa Bay area. Dali’s arrival to the fashion industry has been making numerous headlines; however designing is nothing new for this NY native. She recalls her childhood’s obsession with fashion magazines, and with the help of a pair of scissors, she would cut various designs to mix and match and ultimately transform her bedroom walls into the latest fashion show. The days she went fabric shopping with her mother gave her an early perspective on quality variation and how the same design can be completely altered due to fabric choice. Dali’s fashion line is for the woman who still maintains her social status and is not afraid to make a fashion statement. She feels that there shouldn’t really be a target age or group for her line, because she feels that women are sexy and edgy at any age. Dali was featured on FOX13, What’s Hot Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Pulse, Vocess International, Creative Loafing, tbttimes, St. Pete Times, Panache Vue, Remark Magazine, Libertine Magazine, Envie, and was Semi Finalist for “Fashion Star” NBC. WINNER ALEX JOVICIC FEELING BLESSED, BEAUTIFUL AND EMPOWERING
Alex Jovicic grew up in Germany. In the year 2000 her parents, sister and she moved to the US. First they moved to St. Louis but after vacationing in Florida they fell in love and moved here in 2002. Alex was a big tomboy when she was in high school and was very involved in sports. She had her son at a very young age and married very early as well. The marriage didn’t last more than a year and they got divorced shortly after the birth of her son. Now almost 10 years later she is engaged to an amazing man and they are getting married this July. “I feel that in the last 10 years I had a chance to grow into the person I am today and now I am looking forward to growing old with my fiancé and see where the next 10 years takes our little family.”

anache: Why did you enter our “Make Me look Like a Supermodel Contest?” Alex: My fiancé actually told me to enter. He believed that for a change I should be doing something for myself. Of course I didn’t argue with him! Panache: How did you feel when you knew you had won and were going to receive a makeover and appear on our cover? Alex: I was so ecstatic! I was also very excited to share the news with my family but once I did reality kind of set in that I really did win and that’s

when I got nervous! I didn’t know if I could really pull this off and of course I was worried about disappointing everyone involved. Panache: What is your normal hair/makeup regimen? Do you wear makeup daily; do you spend a lot of time on your hair every day or only for special occasions? Alex: My daily makeup regimen I feel is simple I wear face makeup to work as well as mascara and I dabble in the idea of wearing lipstick but I don’t ever feel it looks right so it comes off fairly quickly. When it comes to my hair I am not adventures in styling. I have a long bob haircut so all www.PanacheVue.com
I have to do in the morning is straighten a couple of unruly pieces and I am ready to go. I am still baffled by curling irons I wouldn’t know where to begin if someone handed me one. Panache: Do you keep up with the latest hair and makeup trends or are you like most women who are somewhat afraid to try new things and just don’t know where to begin? Alex: I don’t keep up with the latest hair trends at all. I love my long bob I could never imagine chopping off my hair and pulling of a pixie cut or whatever may be the current trend, its way to drastic for me.
Panache: What has this experience been like for you? Is it everything you dreamed it would be? Did you learn any tricks of the trade that you might incorporate into your hair and makeup routine? Alex: The experience has been surreal. It was everything I dreamed it would be and more. I could never duplicate what Andrew and Steven did that day, they are true artists. Panache: Once the camera started rolling, what was going through your mind? Alex: “OMG this is really happening!” My second thought was don’t mess this up! Panache: What three words come to mind when you saw yourself on the cover? Alex: Blessed, beautiful, empowering PANACHE VUE’

HOME SWEET HAPPY PLACE BY SCOTT LAFEE
I
n 2013, Time magazine declared the “end of suburbs,” announcing that Americans by the millions were shifting to what planners call the “urban core.” The latest news isn’t going to make these prognosticators very happy. Researchers at Penn State University say Americans who live in suburbs appear happier than those who live in rural areas or inner cities, with one exception: folks who have long commutes to work. The researchers also reported that people who live in the unhappy communities spend, on average, 8.3 days a month in a negative mood. This is not something to scoff at, asserts economics professor Stephan Goetz, who headed the study. “Poor mental health can result in considerable economic costs, including losses of billions of dollars to lower productivity, and this doesn’t even include the staggering personal costs of negative mental health and depression.” Barring those who must travel long distances to and from their jobs (which is bound to make anyone grumpy), Goetz said suburbanites seem to enjoy most, if not all, of the amenities of city life without the stress. His conclusion: “It may be that you don’t want to be too close to people but you don’t want to be too far away, either.” GET ME THAT, STAT! In 1970, Americans spent roughly $6 billion on fast food. In 2006, they spent $142 billion. Things have improved lately; Americans last year spent a mere $117 billion on fast food. But that’s still just slightly less than the entire gross domestic product of Angola. 120 calories. They are entirely fat- and cholesterol-free. In fact, the reindeer contain almost nothing at all (well, there are those 27 grams of sugar), which may explain why reindeer can fly. COUNTS Last year, Americans spent $10.7 trillion shopping, much of it on themselves. Here’s where some of that money went, in dollars: • 1.5 billion -- over-the-counter teeth whiteners. • 5.8 billion -- sinus treatments. • 2.3 billion -- tattoos. • 66 million -- tattoo removal. • 500 million -- Twinkies. Four little-known food facts about calories during the holidays: 1) If you eat something and no one sees you eat it, it has no calories. 2) When you eat with someone else, your calories don’t count if the other person eats more than you. 3) Cookie pieces contain no calories because the breaking process causes calorie leakage. 4) Foods of the same color have the same calorie count, e.g., spinach and pistachio ice cream or mushrooms and mashed potatoes. MUSIC WITH A HEARTBEAT BY SCOTT LAFEE
A
fter analyzing the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, a research team boasting a cardiologist, medical historian and musicologist suggests that some of his most striking rhythms may have been inspired by a heart condition. Writing in the journal Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Washington say certain parts of renowned works by the 19th-century German composer seem to reflect the irregular rhythms of cardiac arrhythmia. “His music may have been both figuratively and physically heartfelt,” said co-author Joel Howell, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. “When your heart beats irregularly from heart disease, it does so in some predictable patterns. We think we hear some of those same patterns in his music.” Example: In the movement “Cavatina” in Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B flat major, Opus 130, the key suddenly changes to C flat major, involving an unbalanced rhythm that evokes dark emotion, disorientation and what has even been described as a shortness of breath. In Beethoven’s directions to musicians playing the piece, he marked the section “beklemmt,” a German word that translates to “heavy of heart.” Interestingly, the actual cause of Beethoven’s death is disputed. He was chronically ill, with numerous conditions attributed to his demise. Among them are alcoholic cirrhosis, syphilis, infectious hepatitis, lead poisoning, sarcoidosis and Whipple’s disease. BODY OF KNOWLEDGE Information travels at different speeds within the body, depending upon the central nervous system cell involved.

Some messages travel as “slowly” as a half-meter (1.6 feet) per second, whereas others cover 120 meters (393 feet) in the same time. Given the actual distances involved, it’s all quite speedy. NUMBER CRUNCHER A tall Starbucks hot chocolate made with whole milk and with whipped cream (340 grams) contains 330 calories, 162 from fat. It has 18 grams of total fat, or 28 percent of the recommended total fat intake for a 2,000-calorie daily diet, according to the Calorie Count database. It also contains 68 milligrams of cholesterol (23 percent), 150 milligrams of sodium (6 percent), 33 grams of total carbohydrates (11 percent), 1.5 grams of dietary fiber, 27.8 grams of sugar and 11.3 grams of protein. COUNTS 53: percentage of American adults polled in December 2014 who said they would be willing to share information anonymously with health care researchers. 61: percentage of these adults who were 35 or younger. 43: percentage of these adults who were 65 or older. MANIA OF THE WEEK Planomania: an abnormal desire to wander and disobey social norms. NEVER SAY DIET The speed-eating record for french fries is 2 pounds in three minutes, 54 seconds, held by Dave “Coondog” O’Karma, who obviously fried, fried and fried again until he had success, or he just has good karma. OBSERVATION “If your doctor’s last name is Google, it’s time to get a second opinion.” -Anonymous MEDICAL HISTORY This week in 1875, George F. Green of Kalamazoo, Michigan, patented an electric dental drill for sawing, filing, dressing and polishing teeth. He rather benignly described it as an “electromagnetic dental tool.” LAST WORDS “God will pardon me. UMBRELLA TRICK LETS HUMOR REIGN BY ROSE BENNETT GILBERT
Q
: I still have the column I clipped a long time ago where you suggested using a market umbrella and table inside a loft to create the illusion of a separate dining room. I have been wishing for a loft ever
30

since! I’ve heard a rumor that you won’t be writing the Decor Score column next year, so I have to ask now: Did anyone ever do the umbrella thing? A: LOL, as they say online. I can’t lay claim to the umbrella trick. Inspired interior designers have long used umbrellas to evoke a bit of frivolity and, yes, to indicate a division of space in a room. No one has done it with more elan and elegance than Barbara Ostrom, who added fun and sparkle -- and how! -- to the master bedroom she designed for a decorator show house in Saddle River, New Jersey. The room was quite large with a ceiling
soaring high enough to fit a dramatic canopy bed, set on an angle to the fireplace. Barbara created a seating arrangement in the area by the windows: a sofa and two chairs focused around a scroll-like acrylic coffee table and lit from above -- ta-dum! -- by an impossibly opulent Baccarat crystal chandelier shaded by a large white umbrella. Elegant, ever so! Wacky, of course -- it was designed by architect Philippe Starck, whose often loony ideas have been brightening the world’s homes since he first hit fame with his iconic design for a spider-like juice squeezer conjured for Alessi. Said to have been sketched on a pizzeria napkin during a seaside vacation, the juicer put both the Italian manufacturer and the French architect on the world’s design map and makes him a sought-after designer of everything from bath fixtures (for Duravit) to cutlery (Laguiole) and electric cars (V+ Volteis), not to mention a string of boutique hotels around the globe. His work can be seen in major museums, both here and in Europe, and his sometimes far-out opinions can be heard wherever the future of design is under discussion -- for example, Philippe was the first designer to take part in a TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talk. Maybe it’s not for the faint of budget, but Phillipe’s irreverent, surreal fixture for Baccarat both lights and delights Barbara’s elegant traditional bedroom. It’s the added surprise that every room longs for, the eccentric touch that used to be known as a conversation piece. Speaking of which, the talk you’ve heard is true: After 32 years -- imagine! -this will be my final Decor Score column. We are moving on with the times to create an online magazine designed to bring you hot news and interesting views from the design world and the shakers and movers thereof. The new magazine promises to be up and running early in the new year, but if you have any burning questions in the meantime, please get directly in touch with me at gilbert.rose@gmail.com. I love it when you talk design with me.
GREEN LIVING
GREEN KITCHENS SHOULD NOT BE BLAND BY GENE MCDONALD
M
any times you might hear about someone wanting a green kitchen. Some people think they are painting those cabinets and countertops lime green. Others may think they are getting a recycled burlap sack stapled to the kitchen cabinets. The truth is that Green Kitchens should be better kitchens. It’s not just about the material, It’s not just about the indoor air quality, It’s not just about the space saving usage of drawers, it’s not just about the products and clean time it takes to maintain the countertops and cabinets, It’s basically all of that. First and foremost when shopping for a Green kitchen, please do not worry about the words “RECYCLED” and “ Natural”. Yes, recycled and natural products are good, but what is it exactly that’s recycled and natural? Recycled formaldehyde is still formaldehyde, Natural mercury is still mercury. It’s a matter of common sense, you may like bamboo
www.PanacheVue.com
which is considered a green material, It does grows real quick once it is harvested, but in all reality, does it look good and can it be used in your kitchen? There are also competing green materials we have the privilege to work with as much as bamboo which is Coconut Palm Plywood made from palm trees once they are done harvesting coconuts. The other material is Kirei which is made from Sorghum plant stalks compressed together for an incredible design look. These materials do cost more than what you are used to seeing in big box stores and the like. That’s not the moment to throw your hands up in the air and say that Green products are expensive, “they should be cheaper”!! Why is that? They should NOT!!! Green products should be better products; Green products should show off their unique quality, a green kitchen should sustain design and value for the next decade. In many kitchen remodeling cases, Cheap and hot deals that
encouraged you to buy a kitchen turned out to be something you settled for. The most exciting thing you can tell your friends is that you saved some money. Wouldn’t you rather have a kitchen in your home that excites you, makes you feel better when you breathe in it, makes you just out right want to dance when you use it, when every square footage of space was used and designed for you. That my friend is a Green Kitchen, a kitchen built to last, a kitchen that makes you happy the world just has to ask you, What is going on, please share the good news. Ask yourself does your kitchen make you yawn? If so, think about Green Kitchen Designs.

CHRONIC SITTING KILLS! I STAND AMAZED BY MARILYNN PRESTON
S
it happens. Everyday, millions of Americans spend 8 to 14 or more hours, on their behinds, sitting. I’m talking to you. Think about your day: driving, commuting, working at a desk. You sit when you eat, watch TV, answer emails, read a book, play a video game, knit booties. The truth is we modern Americans sit so much it passes for totally normal behavior. We don’t even
32
PANACHE VUE’
think about it, do we? Well, start thinking! Pull up your lifeshortening chair and listen to this: There are now over 10,000 studies showing that too much sitting is a terribly destructive thing to do to your health and well-being. Your body thrives on movement, and when you make it sit for hours at a time, you create serious damage at a cellular level. Research shows prolonged sitting significantly raises your risk of developing heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, insomnia, arthritis, osteoporosis and so much more, it’s hard to believe chairs are still legal. If 70 is the new 50, sitting is the new smoking. And don’t think your daily workouts will protect you. Nope. Chronic sitting is an independent risk factor, meaning all the risk correlations hold true no matter
how much you exercise. It sounds too bad to be true, but the research is clear. And that’s why I want to spend the rest of this column, not on the sittingkills research (which is astonishing) but on what can you do to sit less, micro move more and educate yourself about the benefits of standing: USE A STANDING DESK. If sitting kills, standing saves. That’s why stand up desks are quickly rising in popularity, in offices, in homes, and especially at my home, where I’m happily standing now, in front of my new Varidesk, a clever, affordable design in the $350 range that I’ve been showing off to friends like a new puppy. Other stand-ups I researched looked too corporate and would have meant replacing my beloved old wooden desk. The Varidesk sits on top and has an easy,
spring-assisted lift that takes me from sitting to standing in a couple of seconds. I love it ... and I’m pretty sure it loves me. It comes with an app for stand-up alerts, but I’m just using my own body awareness -- gradually standing longer and longer until my legs tire, then sitting for 30 minutes or so before I rise again. I found a ton of anecdotal evidence online about stand-up desks -- some with treadmills -- curing back pain, insomnia, fatigue and more, and I’m not surprised. But too much standing can also create health problems (varicose veins, for instance) so stay tuned into your body and rest in your chair when you need to. MOVE MORE. One sure cure for too much sitting is getting up every hour and moving for 10 minutes or so. Is that so hard? Apparently, yes. So do what you
www.PanacheVue.com
have to do -- an app, a phone alert, a kitchen timer -- to remind yourself to stand, to stretch, to do neck rolls, air squats, and other energizing movements. There’s also walking to the water cooler, jumping rope, practicing your tango moves. Mercola. com is an excellent source for videos demonstrating the kind of intermittent exercises you should be doing, standing up and moving at least once every hour. “I was able to reduce my normal 12 to 14 hours of sitting to under one hour,” Dr. Joe Mercola reports. “And I noticed one amazing thing --the back pain I’ve struggled with for many years, simply disappeared.” READ THIS BOOK. If you want to understand the science behind sitting no, standing yes, moving more, read Dr. James Levine’s recent book, “Get Up! Why Your Chair Is Killing You and What
You Can Do About It.” He’s the Mayo Clinic endocrinologist and pioneering researcher who documented the perils of too much sitting in 2000, way before it was accepted as true. And now he’s a leading voice for change in the work place, at home, and very importantly, in schools, where prolonged sitting hurts kids and stifles creativity. I hope you’re convinced. Stand more; sit less! Now it’s time for me to lower my desk and rest my case. ENERGY EXPRESS-O! NO BUTTS ABOUT IT “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.” -- Dr. James Levine

ou don’t have to train like an Olympic athlete to reap some major benefits from exercise. A new study finds even a few bouts of moderate exercise each week can cut a middle-aged woman’s odds for heart disease, blood clots and stroke. Protection for your heart can come from exercising two to three days a week. And if you exercise more frequently, the British study found it did not lead to greater reductions in heart risk. The take-home message, according to study lead author Miranda Armstrong: “To prevent heart disease, stroke and blood clots, women don’t have to be super athletes or strenuously exercise daily to experience the benefits of physical activity.” In fact, adding lots of extra strenuous exercise may offer “little additional benefit above that from moderately frequent activity,” Armstrong said in a news release from the American Heart Association. She is a physical activity epidemiologist at Oxford University in England. The findings are published Feb. 16 in the journal Circulation. In the study, Armstrong’s team tracked the health of more than 1.1 million British women who had no history of heart disease, stroke, blood clots, diabetes or cancer. The women averaged 56 years of age when they joined the study between 1996 and 2001. Over an average follow-up of nine years, women who did moderate exercise two to three times a week had a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease, stroke or blood clots than those who did little or no exercise. Moderate exercise was defined as being active enough to cause sweating or increased heart rate, and included walking, gardening and cycling. Based on the findings, it’s clear that “inactive middle-aged women should try to do some activity regularly,” Armstrong said. “All she needs to do is make the time 2 to 3 days a week to help protect her heart.” That physical activity doesn’t need to
34
PANACHE VUE’
be complicated, time-consuming or involve expensive equipment, researchers added. It just needs to be a couple of times a week. Q AND A Q: If 100 percent juice is the recommended choice, why is the sugar content on some still so high? A: The reason sugar content is high, even in 100 percent juice, is because listed grams of sugar include all forms of sugar, including those that occur naturally in the fruits. But a product labeled 100 percent juice means it contains only juice or juice concentrate with no added sugars. Choosing 100 percent juice helps you avoid “empty” calories, which means the natural sugar and calories come with some combination of vitamins, minerals and natural plant compounds (phytochemicals). Navigating juice labels requires careful reading. For example, “100 percent cranberry juice” must be exclusively cranberry juice; “100 percent juice, cranberry” cannot contain added sugar, but may be a blend of several juices, and cranberry need not dominate. Since the juice of some fruits, like grapes, tends to be naturally higher in sugar and sweeter tasting than an equal amount of other juice, producers often use grape and apple juice concentrates as the primary juice in a blend, even when the label lists another fruit, such as cranberry, peach or raspberry, as the juice flavor and name. Read the label. Juice drinks or cocktails -- not 100 percent juice -- may have a small amount of real fruit juice, but also contain added sugars like beet and cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup. These beverages lack the nutritional benefits of 100 percent juice. You can have juice drinks that are lower in calories and sugar by diluting them with water, which will also dilute nutrient content. Drinking 100 percent juice is recommended as the best fruit beverage option, but also note that for most people, solid fruits are an

TRY THIS PROTEIN ON FOR THIGHS BY SCOTT LAFEE
T
hat old excuse about “big bones” doesn’t really explain why some folks are fat -- or tend to put on weight faster than others -- but there may be another explanation with better scientific validity: I’m fat because I’m missing a protein. Writing in The FASEB Journal, researchers at the University of Rochester say the protein in question appears to play a fundamental role in controlling whether developing cells become fat cells. They suggest that in some people, the protein is turned off or lost, allowing fat cells to accumulate in greater numbers. People with more fat cells tend to become fatter. It’s not clear why the protein is lost, but the discovery of its molecular role in regulating how many fat cells are created makes it a promising therapeutic target. The scientists are working on an anti-obesity drug that restores the protein and its regulatory function. “Our goal is to prevent or reduce obesity, and in this paper, we’ve shown how to do this in principle,” said lead study author Richard Phipps. “We believe that weight gain is not necessarily just a result of eating more and exercising less. Our focus is on the intricate network involved in fat cell development.” The protein, discovered 40 years ago and previously studied in other contexts, is aptly named Thy1. NEVER SAY DIET The speed-eating record for potato latkes (a sort of pancake) is 48 in eight minutes, held by Peter Czerwinski. It’s unclear why Czerwinski is nicknamed “Furious Pete” -- unless it’s because he thought latkes come with maple syrup. They do not. Most often, they are served with sour cream, cottage cheese or applesauce.
OBSERVATION “A natural death is where you die by yourself without the aid of a doctor.” -Mark Twain (1835-1910) CURTAIN CALLS In 2009, a Nebraska woman named Diana Durre agreed to rendezvous with a Wyoming couple interested in buying a couple of her homebred Yorkshire terriers. They planned to meet beneath the “big Taco Bell sign” in the city of North Platte, Nebraska. Durre arrived early and parked her pickup truck beneath the 75-foot sign. It was very windy, and the sign’s pole snapped at a welded joint 15 feet above the ground. The sign fell on top of Durre’s truck’s cab, killing her. The Yorkies survived. The Wyoming couple arrived after the accident.

WATER FITNESS
BENEFITS
T
he unique properties of water combine to offer one of the most effective environments for an exercise program. Water fitness is the great equalizer – participants of a wide range of skill and fitness levels can enjoy this low-impact, total body conditioning workout. With the addition of high-quality equipment, the benefits of a water workout are endless.
GETTING FIT: TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING
• Studies have shown convincingly that water workouts decrease body fat as effectively as land-based exercise programs. • Without performing a single sit-up, a water workout tones and strengthens the abdominals as a result of maintaining a vertical posture against the water’s resistance.

• Water offers a three-in-one workout for cardiovascular and muscular conditioning and enhanced flexibility. This timeefficient, total body conditioning workout results in increased strength and endurance, and improved biomechanics and balance. • Low-impact aquatic workouts can prevent the injury, strain and re-injury common to many land-based exercise. Water supports 90 percent of the body’s weight – resulting in reduced stress on joints, muscles, tendon and ligaments. • Water is a natural and instantly adjustable weight-training machine. Resistance is approximately four to 42 times greater in water than air. A workout can be as vigorous or light as desired by effectively utilizing the water’s resistance. • Unlike most land activities, water provides resistance in all directions, so both sides of the muscle pair can be strength-
ened simultaneously. For example, an arm curl works both biceps and triceps, since there is resistance to the movement in both directions. • An upright water workout can be more effective than swimming, because the body’s vertical position increases resistance 75 percent over swimming laps. FEELING GOOD: FITNESS FOR A LIFETIME
• A regular water fitness program can result in the permanent reduction of blood pressure. Water’s hydrostatic pressure helps the heart circulate blood, which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise versus similar exertions on land. • Practical daily movements such as walking, lifting and reaching can be incorpo-
• Buoyancy equipment, such as the patented AquaJogger® belt, suspend the body securely and comfortably, supporting the head and neck out of the water, so hair stays dry and glasses can be worn. rated into a water fitness workout to enhance functionality. This can result in the ability to enjoy and perform the activities of daily life with greater energy and ease. A water workout can be a social activity just like fitness walking or riding side-byside stationary bikes. With access to an indoor pool, water exercise becomes a great year-round activity, as well as a safe workout option during inclement weather. It can also be an affordable alternative to at-home workouts which often involve more expensive equipment. Water exercise is both exhilarating and therapeutic – reducing stress-related symptoms such as high blood pressure and muscle spasms. The water’s full body massage action provides a vigorous yet deeply relaxing workout that is usually pain free. Water exercise involves all muscle groups, yet virtually eliminates muscle soreness – leaving the muscles relaxed instead of

tight and sore.
WATER WALKING: NO SWIM SKILLS REQUIRED
• Water walking and running movements are simple to learn and require no swim skills, making deep water workouts accessible to virtually everyone – from those just beginning a workout program to those looking for a great cross-training option. • Whether in peak condition or recovering from surgery, the water’s forgiving environment supports and offers a light or challenging workout according to the person’s need – for both fragile physical therapy clients and intense athletes. • The water’s buoyancy helps even the uncoordinated land exerciser achieve a measure of grace with movements that are easy to learn. The fact that water obscures less than stellar bodies also makes this exercise appealing to the self-conscious.
• Water exercise demands the continual use of the abdominal and back muscles as well as the arms and legs in order to maintain erect body alignment and balance. This strengthening of the core abdominals and back can assist in managing and preventing back pain. • Water exercise enables a person to preserve as much fitness and function as possible while rehabilitating an injury. Many people heal to over 100 percent of preinjury strength and may actually improve their fitness level. Some individuals who have committed to aquatic therapy found their recovery time is reduced by half. • Heat is lost 25 times faster in water than air, allowing for longer and more comfortable workouts. This natural cooling of the body is particularly beneficial for people who tend to overheat during exercise, and in conditions such as pregnancy or multiple sclerosis, where maintaining a lower core body temperature is very important. • The water’s pressure helps the heart circulate blood which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise. As a result of this hydrostatic pressure, water exercise may be one of the best and safest activities for cardiac patients. It also helps reduce swelling, allowing many people with arthritis or injuries to exercise. n To find a retailer near you visit www.AquaJogger.com or call 1-800-922-9544. DISCOVER ADVENTURE AND THE ALOHA SPIRIT ON THE BIG ISLAND BY DOUG HANSEN
O
ur nighttime manta-ray tour took us far out into the ocean until the boat anchored and we entered the cool water, grasping the handles of our long surfboards while waiting for what some called “the experience of a lifetime.” In the gloomy depths below, giant manta rays with 10- to 20-foot wingspans slowly emerged from the darkness to feed on the tiny plankton swarming around our lights. These ocean acrobats performed a barrel roll as they fed, gliding mere inches beneath us and allowing us to peer deep into their astonishingly large, luminescent gullets. What an unforgettable introduction to the wonders of Hawaii, the Big Island. My wife and I spent 10 days exploring the Big Island, which is aptly named since it is twice the size of the rest of the Hawaiian islands combined. After hearing other travelers’ enthusiastic descriptions of the island’s unique features, including the rare chance to see an active volcano,

we felt compelled to visit this highly regarded place. Amazingly, the Big Island is home to the world’s largest volcano, Mauna Loa; the most active volcano, Kilauea; and the Earth’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea (as measured from its seafloor base to its peak). As one local affirmed, “What I like most about the Big Island is its diversity. We have 11 of the world’s 13 climate zones, so we can hike in snow or a rainforest on the same day.” When we landed at the Kona International Airport we were surprised by the vast expanse of twisted, jagged lava fields that surrounded us. But like most Big Island visitors, we wanted to spend most of our time on the island’s west side because it is significantly drier and sunnier than the east side, and it has more tourist amenities. After a short drive from the airport, we reached the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa, perched atop a black lava outcropping along the edge of the ocean. Our hotel’s lobby welcomed us with a spectacular view of neighboring Keauhou Bay with its shimmering, azure waters surrounded by lush tropical trees, palms and flowering shrubs. The first night we dined at the hotel’s main restaurant, Rays on the Bay, where we savored its delicious seafood, wine and panoramic ocean views while warm breezes wafted past our table. As darkness settled on the ocean, we watched as the lights from the manta-ray tour boats, moored 100 yards from the restaurant, illuminated groups of snorkelers waiting to see giant mantas. The next morning, while hiking near
our hotel, we discovered several ancient Hawaiian archaeological sites, including King Kamehameha III’s birthplace, and a mile to the south, the Lekeleke Burial Grounds, where a lava-rock wall protected a “kapu” (forbidden) lava field, the site of one of Hawaii’s last important battles in 1819 (look for the flat-topped lava mounds where the fallen leaders were buried). Exploring the surrounding area, we discovered intriguing remnants of another ancient Hawaiian burial ground and a heiau, or temple, hidden on a rocky peninsula overlooking the crashing waves below. When we finished our Indiana Joneslike explorations, we headed north on Ali’i Drive to Kailua-Kona, a town that attracts visitors to its variety of shops and restaurants and its exceptional attractions, including the reconstructed shrine (or heiau) and royal residence of Hawaii’s revered King Kamehameha I, the nearby starting point for the world-famous Ironman Triathlon, and across the street, Hawaii’s oldest Christian church built in 1820. Near the top of our to-do list was finding the island’s best beaches and snorkeling spots. We began with the Fair Winds’ five-hour snorkeling and dive cruise that took us to places only accessible by boat, including Kealakekua Bay, a marine reserve where Captain Cook’s monument marks the spot of his untimely demise. The next day, we took the locals’ advice and found Kahalu’u Beach, where we were awestruck by its quantity and variety of colorful fish,

coral and easy access. Ultimately we found the best combo snorkeling/white sand beach hidden within the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. If you want to go there, arrive early because visitor parking is limited. We planned to stay in different parts of the island, so we moved 36 miles up the coast to the Fairmont Orchid. “ShangriLa” best describes this ocean-side luxury resort. Our exclusive Gold Floor room included a private concierge, a lounge for breakfast and afternoon tea, and a view of the adjacent golf course bordered by the ocean and distant mountains. Our massage in the beachside cabana, followed by dinner at Brown’s Beach House with exquisite food and live music performed by the ocean under swaying palm trees, ranks high among our finest travel experiences. We set aside a full day to relax at the resort’s sandy lagoon, where we rested in our cabana, swam and tried stand-up paddle-boarding. The snorkeling was surprisingly good -- in addition to seeing abundant fishes and coral, we encountered half a dozen large green sea turtles munching on algae and gliding gracefully through the warm, clear water. After six days at the beach, we headed east to our final destination -- the famed Kilauea volcano. The scenery changed dramatically as we left the dry lava fields behind and passed through green, hilly pastures before finally reaching the east coast’s lush tropical rainforests. Luckily, as we neared Hilo, the island’s largest city, we came across the Hawaii

Tropical Botanical Garden, a hidden treasure on the Four Mile Scenic Drive. With its spectacular variety of tropical flowers, exotic plants and hillside trails that meander past waterfalls and crashing ocean waves, this magical place proved to be an unexpected highlight of our trip. A few miles past Hilo we reached the Kilauea Lodge, only a mile from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Needing to relax, we soaked in the lodge’s hot tub, which is tucked away in the back garden, before dining in their highly acclaimed gourmet restaurant. Later that evening we drove to the park to watch the spectacle of orange-tinted smoke pouring out of Kilauea’s crater and reflecting the magma deep below. Early the next morning, we hiked the four-mile Kilauea Iki trail that led us along the crater rim and through dense fern forests filled with the songs of unseen birds. Periodically we stopped to gaze at the panoramic views of the volcano before descending to the crater floor -- an eerie place where we felt like intruders walking across the remains of a once-seething cauldron of molten rock, now frozen into a dark, surreal tableau. Our desire to see flowing lava motivated us to book a combination helicopter and zipline tour with KapohoKine Adventures in Hilo. The weather was perfect for our smooth, hourlong flight over the volcano, but alas there was more smoke than lava this time. The pilot pointed out something found rarely anywhere else in the world, however: several hundred acres of newly created land, formed as molten lava hardened upon contact with the ocean
over the past few years. We finished this adventure-filled day by zipping down nine lines that soared past waterfalls and pastoral hillsides. From giant mantas to fern-clad volcanoes, we agreed with the rave reviews we had heard about the Big Island’s diversity and fun things to do. A passage in the Big Island Traveler magazine best captured our reason for venturing to destinations such as this: “We journey far and wide to these places which remind us of where we came from, what we are inspired by, and to celebrate and connect with beauty, antiquity and forces greater than ourselves.” In that spirit, we said mahalo and aloha to the Big Island -- thank you and farewell.
