DO YOU REALLY NEED BACK OR NECK SURGERY?

M

ore than 465,000 spinal fusions were performed in the United States in 2011. It is estimated that patients spent over $200 million on those surgeries. The United States leads the world in spinal fusions and surgeries. In fact, on average, up to 4 times more surgeries than any other nation, BUT DID ALL OF THESE PATIENTS REALLY NEED SURGERY?? As chiropractors in the Tampa Bay area for over 14 years, Dr. Carl Conforti and his team of doctors have been fighting to reduce those numbers and provide safe, surgery free options for patients who truly want to be well and avoid the pain shots and surgeries.

WHAT IS THE DRX9000?

The DRX9000 is a state of the art machine that allows us to perform spinal decompression in the comfort of our offices.

WHAT KIND OF CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT WITH THE SPINAL DECOMPRESSION? The DRX9000 allows us to treat quite a few conditions. We have both neck and back decompression, so we treat for neck pain, sciatic DRX9000

pain, lower back pain, auto injuries, sports injuries, bulging and herniated discs, and many other injuries.

HOW DO YOU DETERMINE IF SOMEONE IS A CANDIDATE FOR YOUR TREATMENT?

In our candidate assessment, we review MRI’s, x-rays, and we utilize our computerized spinal exam (EMG) to evaluate the problem. After reviewing all of the tests, we discuss medical history and the complexity of the issues.

ONCE YOU DETERMINE THAT SOMEONE IS A CANDIDATE WHAT CAN THEY EXPECT NEXT?

Once we have determined that someone is a candidate for the spinal decompressions treatment, we lay out a treatment plan and start treatment as soon as possible. Many times we can start the patient that same week, and sometimes that same day. With the treatment plan in mind, we start the spinal decompression and therapies to ensure optimal results.

DO THE TREATMENTS HURT?

No, not at all. In fact, many of our patients fall asleep during treatment. Others choose to read books and listen to music. It is actually a very

relaxing treatment.

WHAT IS YOUR SUCCESS RATE WITH THE TREATMENT?

As opposed to traditional surgery, which is about 50% success, our treatment process is successful over 80% of the time. Our careful attention to specific needs and our full in office treatment process allows our patients to be back enjoying their lives pain free and full of life!

COMPLIMENTARY CONSULTATION AND CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT (A $295 VALUE) In this consultation you will receive a consultation, exam, and x-rays (if necessary). Dr. Conforti and his team of doctors will explain their recommendations for your treatment plan and their plan to eliminate your pain, burning, restlessness, and altered nerve function! Call the office nearest you today to schedule your consultation. Offer expires 11-15-14

HEALTH

MAXIMIZING YOUR CHIROPRACTIC CARE

C

hiropractic is defined as “a form of alternative medicine that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the belief that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system.”

TRADITIONAL CARE DOES NOT MAKE THE PATIENT WELL

It is estimated that doctors of chiropractic treat more than 30 million people annually. Today, doctors of chiropractic comprise the third largest group of doctorate-level primary-care providers in the nation, next to medical doctors and dentists. Chiropractic care has grown exponentially in the United States, but with

8

PANACHE VUE’

that growth, we have seen an increase in chiropractors who have lost focus on truly healing and promoting health and wellness in the community. Many doctors focus on pain relief and do not spend time providing patients with the knowledge of being well. Traditional chiropractic care strives to remove pain and limited range of motion through manipulations and modalities like electric muscle stimulation and ultrasound. Patients are treated until the pain is eliminated and then they are released from care. The problem with this traditional treatment plan is that the underlying cause of the pain is not eliminated and the pain eventually returns.

CORRECTIVE CARE LEAVES LASTING RESULTS

We see patients in our office daily that say that they have treated with another chiropractor for the same condition in the past. Typically, we find that they received a few adjustments and stopped with care as soon as they “felt” better. The problem with that is that only 10% of the nervous system is programmed to identify pain. So just because you do not feel the pain does not mean that there is not an interference. Our focus in our offices is full “corrective care.” Corrective care realigns the spine, restores the curves, and focuses on maximizing your lifestyle through proper nutrition and lifestyle. This type of care is unique in that it corrects the cause, re-

moves the interference, and maximizes function. Corrective care is not for treating spinal pain alone. Our patients do not just walk in, get adjusted, and walk out. We engage our patients in corrective therapies before and after care and provide each patient with at home exercises to maintain health and wellness everyday not just the days they are coming to see us. In addition to that, we also truly believe in whole health, so we include nutrition information and physical activity as part of our patients overall care. Additionally, we implement 5 essential lifestyle adjustments that allow our patients to function at 100%. Our bodies are naturally built to fight disease and build health, and by teaching our patients to eliminate the interferences that prevent that from happening we are providing whole health corrective care. The 5 essentials we focus on with every patient include: Maximized Mind-- A Maximized Mind encompasses areas such as time and stress management, improving your relationships with others, and making sure that you get adequate amounts of sleep. Working on all of these area’s help to improve a negative attitude and help your overall peace and well-being from within yourself. The right, renewed mindset about life and health are necessary in order to commit to following any lifestyle plan. Maximized Nerve Supply-- Nerve

supply is the life supply to all cells, organs, and systems in the body and so is responsible for all function and healing. Improper spinal alignment is common and likely to happen due to the amount of physical, emotional, and chemical stress you apply to your body every day so must be addressed as the foundational part of living at your health potential. Maximized Nutrition-- What you put into your body affects how you feel each and every day. Food is the fuel that your body needs to continue to power and heal itself on a daily basis. Diets that are high in carbohydrates, have pH or omega-3 imbalances or are nutrient deficient, have negative effects not only on your body, but can create a lot of symptoms such as depression, brain fog, stress and fatigue. Maximized Oxygen-- Exercise allows your body to take in higher levels of oxygen and creates lean muscle that keeps both your body and mind healthy. Studies have shown that exercise consistently match or exceed the benefits of antidepressants. This is your opportunity to decrease fat and increase lean muscle tissue. Minimizing Toxins-- Toxins and chemicals surround us in our everyday lives and are included in items such as medications, refined foods, household cleaners and the items we cook with! Each of these toxins affect our bodies in a negative way and inhibit us from functioning at optimal levels.

Dr. Carl Conforti, D.C.

By providing whole health wellness care our patient are truly WELL. Let us show you the difference in tradition chiropractic care and corrective chiropractic care today.

“OUT, DAMNED SPOT!”

W

hen Lady Macbeth cursed her spots, Shakespeare perhaps wasn’t thinking about sunspots, but YOU should be. Now that summer is over, those pesky sunspots are probably more visible than ever before – on your shoulders, your chest, your hands and even your cheeks. Thankfully, at Red Bamboo we can erase them easily with an inexpensive treatment that has a marvelous side effect – skin tightening. Read on. When we were young and foolish, we tried to get the deepest tan we could, sometimes even using baby oil to intensify the pigment. Thank goodness we’re smarter now especially here in Florida and we’ve learned to slather on sunscreen whenever we go outside. A lot of us still have quite a bit of sun damage, age spots and other pigment irregularities which seem to get even worse during the summer months. Now that autumn is here and we’re spending less time at the beach or on the boat, it’s a perfect time to get rid of those spots with Intense Pulsed Light. Intense Pulsed Light or IPL is NOT a laser and does not have the pain or “down time” associated with laser treatments. Instead, IPL is a brief but brilliant flash of

10

PANACHE VUE’

BEFORE

AFTER

light that’s been tuned to the wavelength of the brown pigment in your skin called melanin. After an IPL treatment, you may look a little flushed for a few hours but the redness fades quickly and then the brown spots turn a little darker like coffee grinds. These spots can easily be covered with makeup so they won’t interfere with work or social activities. After about a week, the spots rise up to the surface and fleck away leaving your skin smoother, clearer and more youthful appearing – like peaches and cream. IPL works extremely well on sunspots, age spots, freckles, hyperpigmentation and melasma. One treatment usually produces a dramatic improvement but commonly, there will be areas of stubborn, deep-seated pigment that require two or three treatments for the best effect. IPL also works well on superficial blood vessels, broken capillaries, red spots and red splotchy areas. These also tend to sit a little deeper in the skin and so three treatments are recommended. See our ad in this issue for a limited-time offer of three facial IPL treatments for the price of two. IPL is not just for the face either. Hands, forearms, shoulders, décolleté, neck and even legs can all be treated. We have some patients who treat every inch of their bodies not covered by a bikini. Hands are a particularly popular area to treat since they receive a lot of sun exposure and are commonly affected by pigmented spots. It’s often easier to guess someone’s age by looking at their hands than their face. A quick, inexpensive IPL treatment can erase those spots and restore your self-confidence about showing off your hands. First we apply numbing cream for about 20 minutes before the treatment but unlike laser resurfacing, IPL is only mildly uncomfortable. Some describe it

as a mild “snap” like a rubber band. But what about that skin-tightening side effect that I mentioned earlier? In Aesthetic Medicine, a common strategy we use to rejuvenate the skin is to stimulate it in a very controlled way. Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling, retin-A and laser resurfacing all create a specific and controlled amount of skin stimulation. This causes the skin to become active and produce new healthier skin cells, new fibroblasts and new collagen. It’s the new collagen that makes the skin tighter and more elastic. During an IPL treatment, the skin heats up, like a mild sunburn. The heat stimulates the fibroblasts within the skin to create more elastic collagen. The result is that the skin appears smoother, tighter and more robust. So, in addition to the clearing of sunspots, hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries and superficial blood vessels, IPL also improves the texture, tone and elasticity of the skin. It’s truly a great treatment. IPL works best on those with fair or neutral complexion, especially those with Northern or Eastern European heritage or those of French, British or Irish descent. Greeks, Italians and Spanish with lighter pigmentation are also good candidates for IPL. It’s best to avoid sun exposure for about three weeks before an IPL treatment and to plan on getting a series of three about a month apart. Call us at 727726-6100 for a consultation and mention Panache Vue for a special IPL series price. Francis E. ASK AUDREY

BREAK THE SILENCE

I

’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “Don’t talk about it, be about it.” Kristen is the epitome of this phrase. She has the heart of a LION and the eye of the TIGER. If I had to describe her in one word it would be ACTION. It takes strength to Break the Silence... This is the tag line on one of the t-shirts Kristen Paruginog designed to generate much needed donations to operate the non-profit she started just three short years ago. It all began after Kristen left her abuser and began researching what domestic violence was. She stumbled upon a video of another survivor breaking her silence and it inspired her to do the same. Break the Silence or BTS started off as a Facebook page where she could share her story with others and hopefully inspire them to break their silence as well. It was so inspiring and empowering that this virtual space would eventually become more than just a FB page, it would become an official non-profit and a MOVEMENT! It was established to educate communities on the dangers of domestic violence, connect victims and survivors, and empower them to embark on a new journey of peace and self-sufficiency. She has developed so many positive programs and continues to speak-out in her community and across the country. Recently, she embarked on a 10 city, 10 survivors, 10 week tour in an effort to create a documentary to share with the world. Clearwater, Fl was one of her stops where

12

PANACHE VUE’

she would meet survivor Melissa Dohme, whose ex-boyfriend attempted to murder her just two years prior. As Kristen spent time here the city embraced her energetic spirit and she was invited back to speak at The Haven of RCS’s annual Faces Luncheon. This is just one example of the power of BTS, the team she has built, and the vision for a future without violence. If you visit the BTS Facebook page you will find a compilation of 100 reasons why victims stay, 100 reasons why victims leave, and campaigns such as Real Men Don’t Abuse and Real Women Don’t Abuse. You will also find original songs and BTS gear to assist in getting the word out that domestic violence is very real and that there is hope for change. At the heart of the page you’ll find many inspiring stories of people who have chosen to break their silence. The innovation is never ending with BTS and the true beauty is within the sisterhood that was formed through the page. My favorite program Break the Silence offers is their annual revitalization retreat. It’s a 3-day/2-night revitalization retreat for survivors of domestic violence. Attendee’s embark on an emotionally uplifting journey alongside fellow survivors and advocates. The weekend in comprised of a multitude of workshops aimed at inspiring and empowering yourself as well as learning great life skills. However, this is not the only program. There is also a hotline you can call where Kristen herself will answer the phone, candle light vigil’s to remember the angels who didn’t survive, education programs, and much more. Although there is still much work to be done Kristen has proven one woman

breaking her silence can change countless lives and that there is hope for a future without domestic violence. To learn more, get involved or make a donation please visit www.breakthesilencedv.org www.facebook.com/breakthesilence1

HEALTH

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED.....???

E

ach month I try to make this article fun, interesting and informative. I believe empowering you with information is key to helping you make good decisions about the quality of your health. This month I’d like to answer a few important questions I am frequently asked. 1. Do I really need x-rays? Routine dental x-rays are an important diagnostic tool in our office. There are many diseases and dental defects, which cannot be seen by the naked eye. Things such as decay under old fillings, teeth trapped below the gums, cavities between the teeth, bone loss as a result of gum disease and changes in the jaw bone structure. In our office we only take the absolute necessary x-rays. We use digital x-rays and a 3 Dimensional Cone beam x-ray , providing the lowest , safest levels of radiation. The benefits far outweigh the risks. 2. How can I improve the whiteness of my teeth? There are many options available to

whiten your teeth both in the drug store and in the office. Whitening toothpastes can help remove surface stains only and do not contain bleach. Over-the-counter and professional whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide (a bleaching substance) that helps remove stains on the tooth surface, as well as stains deep in the tooth. None of the home use whitening toothpastes can come even close to producing the bleaching effect you get from chair side bleaching or power bleaching done in the office. Whitening tooth pastes can lighten your tooth’s color by about one shade. In contrast, light-activated whitening conducted in the office can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter. You should also be aware the foods you are eating, the medications you are taking and if you smoke , could all effect the color of your teeth. 3. Why do I need a dental exam – I just want my teeth cleaned?

In order to determine the kind of hygiene appointment you will need and the length of the appointment, I like to thoroughly evaluate each new patient. When you come to the office you bring in your unique oral health. Your life style, health and genetic background all come in to play. I have seen people come in who say they feel ok and yet have many silent problems – cavities, gum disease, bone loss and oral cancer. These may require a more involved periodontal appointment. I also see many people who maintain their oral health with routine hygiene visits. The only way to know where you stand is to receive a thorough exam. If you have a question you’d like me to address, please feel free to contact me in the office, 727-785-8017, email liebermandds@tampabay.rr.com or visit our website which is full of valuable information, www.dentist-lieberman.com. ince acquiring the contemporary art collection from the former Gulf Coast Museum of Art, LRMA has presented an annual exhibition that explores themes and concepts relevant to artists today. This fall, Uncertain Landscape: Victoria Block and Alain Salesse and Disappearing Landscape: Janos Enyedi each share a message of subjective landscapes based on real or imaginary observations. Block and Salesse explore personal landscapes in a variety of media. For Block, large impressionistic paintings, accompanied by drawings, ceramic installations and mixed media pieces create a visual interplay that conjures up associations and memory. For Salesse, sculpture and technology synthesize in large ceramic egg forms that explore tactile realities. These fabricated, self-contained worlds convey an inner vision that require interaction to activate the imagination.

Janos Enyedi (1947-2011) was a nationally known sculptor whose meticulous recreations of factories and buildings in America’s rust belt bring a sense of dignity to these decaying structures. Enyedi, who lived and worked in the Washington, DC, area for over two decades, moved to St. Petersburg’s rapidly expanding Warehouse Arts District in 2010. He left a large body of work before his untimely death in 2011, including metal sculpture, large-format digital photography and industrial vignettes (referred to as threedimensional paintings).

BEAUTY

JUVÉDERM’S TRIFECTA BY VALERIE KELLEY

J

uvederm. No doubt, you’ve already heard about its effectiveness in restoring a younger, refreshed appearance in just a single treatment. However, chances are you’re probably confused by the various options this marvel offers. Is it Juvederm Ultra, or maybe Juvederm Plus? When is Voluma preferable? And what exactly does XC mean? Let’s break it down, shall we? An attractive face is characterized by smooth, round contours, high cheekbones and a thin, well-defined jaw line. These features together comprise the ‘triangle of beauty’ or ‘heart of face’, with its base at the top and summit below. As we age, facial fat loss, gravity and loss of the skin’s natural elasticity conspire to reverse this triangle’s composition, leading to a narrower, less youthful forehead and temple area, and a wider, heavier jaw line. Over time, permanent furrows and deep wrinkles develop as a result of this volume loss, making you look older, sad, angry or tired. With Juvederm, you don’t have to sit back and let it happen. The Juvéderm family, as a whole, is an FDA-approved smooth consistency gel capable of restoring volume to the skin while smoothing away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. This injection is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that adds volume and hydration. But unlike other hyaluronic acid fillers, which usually have granular consistencies, Juvéderm is easily injected into the skin and produces immediate, natural-looking results. What kind of results? Well, that’s where the three main Juvéderm products truly diversify themselves. Juvéderm Ultra Works Well For: • Moderate wrinkles – If you have slight to moderate wrinkles Juvederm Ultra is the better bet as it has a good consistency for handling these issues and won’t be overkill. • Scar Correction – Its thinner consistency makes Juvederm Ultra better equipped

www.PanacheVue.com

BEFORE

AFTER

at correcting the look of scars. • Slight Lip Enhancement– If you only want a slight lip enhancement, Juvederm Ultra is an excellent option. Its finer molecules give it a silkiness that works well for natural lip enhancement. Juvéderm Ultra Plus is Best For: • Significant Lip Enhancement – The ability to fill more effectively makes Juvederm Ultra Plus the best option for those that want dramatic results. • Deeper wrinkles – Juvederm Ultra Plus was designed to go deeper into the skin to fill out more severe wrinkles. • Naso-labial folds – Again, Juvederm Ultra Plus outperforms when it comes to correcting naso-labial folds because it’s thicker and goes deeper into the dermis. • Areas with greater volume loss – Because of its thicker consistency and cross-linking Juvederm Ultra Plus works better for those that have significant volume loss. This makes it the better option for filling out areas like the cheeks. • Facial Shaping – Unlike Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus is injected into the fat layers, which is ideal for facial shaping. Juvéderm Voluma Is Best Suited For: • Maximum Lift and Volume – While Juvéderm Ultra offer excellent results when applied to fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, nose, and eyes, Voluma is often better suited to larger scale facial volumizing. • Facial Recontouring - Because of its thicker consistency and cross-linking

BEFORE

AFTER

Voluma works better for those that have significant volume loss in the cheeks, temples or even earlobes. This is the better option for filling out areas like the cheeks. It’s the first and only FDAapproved filler to instantly add volume to the cheek area. • Long Lasting Results – Of all the Juvéderm products, Voluma is the longest lasting, restoring facial volume for about two years. What Does the XC mean? XC on any Juvederm filler simply means a local anesthetic, Lidocaine (0.3%), has been added to the formulation to enhance patient comfort. It’s essentially the same product with an extra ingredient. Additionally, XC syringes contain 25% more product. Don’t be afraid to ask to see the box. Any reputable injector will be impressed with your insider knowledge. One size certainly doesn’t fit all when it comes to Juvederm. A skilled and experienced injector will choose a filler as an artist chooses a brush, to achieve customized results for your face. Patients are typically very happy with Juvederm’s smooth, natural, rejuvenating results. And rest assured, in the rare event that one is dissatisfied, Juvederm is easily reversible. THERE IS A RELATIVELY NEW TECHNIQUE that is being used in Orthodontics.

I

t’s called “Accelerated Tooth movement technology”. This technique utilizes Micro-Osteoperforations to speed up tooth movement. What this means it that if small perforations are placed into the bone there is an enhanced rate of tooth movement and a subsequent decrease in treatment time. WOW! But did he say placing small holes in the bone and isn’t that going to hurt? The answer is that there is no discomfort in this technique. The gum tissue is numbed with a very profound anesthetic topical gel and very tiny perforations are placed in the bone with a specific sterile, one use only instrument manufactured by “Propel Orthodontics” Since bone itself has no nerve endings in it you only have to numb the gum tissue to do the procedure. The perforations do not impinge on the teeth and are only a few mm in depth. It is amazing how this influences the speed of tooth movement and a substantial decrease in ones treatment time. This can be done not only with braces but also aligner therapy. Ask your Orthodontist if they offer this technique and decrease your treatment time.

BEAUTY

ASK ANDREW ASHTON LaPosh Salon

Andrew Ashton LaPosh Salon

Dear Andrew Ashton, I have blond hair and it looks bright right after I get it done, but seems to dull as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to keep that bright blond longer? Natalia, Tampa Dear Natalia, I see this problem a lot with the bright blonds. A couple things to remember in the weeks following your color appointment: be sure that any shampoo, conditioner and styling products you are using are all clear or white in color. Sometime products even with the

slightest tone can discolor light hair especially if you’re washing often. Bright blond hair can be very porous and will easily absorb these tones over time. As a Florida resident, mineral despots are abundant in our water and can also lead to dullness. To aid in this problem and avoid build up, use a clarifying shampoo every few weeks. Always use a deep conditioner after a clarifying shampoo, because they can strip your hair of the natural oils that protect your hair from pollutants. Andrew Ashton Dear Andrew Ashton, I am planning my wedding for next year and was wondering about airbrush or regular make-up application. Which is better and does it really matter which application for photos? Brittany, St.Petersburg Dear Brittany, First off, congratulations on your upcom-

ing nuptials! Your wedding day is a very important day so your makeup should look flawless. Airbrush makeup application is a way of applying the foundation by using an airbrush gun to finely mist on the foundation, whereas traditional makeup application is applied with a sponge or brush. Airbrush foundations offer great coverage but are thin in texture. Because airbrushing is distributed in micro-fine layers, it will have a natural, pure and more flawless look in photos. It can hide imperfections (such as large pores, acne scars and redness) without having a “caked-on” appearance. Keep in mind that the make-up artist applying the foundation does make a difference so be certain you have someone who is experienced. Traditional make-up will last approximately 6-8 hours as opposed to an airbrush application that can last up to 20 hours. (Pretty amazing, huh?) Schedule a consultation several weeks before your wedding to allow yourself time to explore both options. Here’s wishing you a beautiful day! Andrew Ashton

CULTURAL & ARTS

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF CLEARWATERDUNEDIN, INC. Presents the 51st Annual Art Harvest

T

he Junior League of ClearwaterDunedin, Inc. will host the 51st Annual Art Harvest on Saturday, November 1st and Sunday, November 2nd at Highlander Park in Dunedin. Art Harvest is a fine art festival featuring more than 200 artists from around the country. This year’s featured artist is Mike Williams of St. Petersburg, FL. Mike’s work is a combination of where he has been, as well as where he would like to be. Mike’s journey began as a carpenter and selling his artwork on the weekend. After working as a carpenter for several years, he was looking for a change. He quit his full-time job and rented a small

20

PANACHE VUE’

studio. For three years he worked parttime jobs and went door-to-door selling his art. With no formal training, Mike considered attending college, but to his surprise he was told by several highly regarded art professors that formal training was not recommended. He already had his own style and classes would only confuse him. Mike’s work takes a great deal of daydreaming, but the most enjoyable part for him is not knowing where it will take him next. Admission into Art Harvest is free. Parking is available at Highlander Park and Dunedin High School for a small fee. Dunedin High School is approximately ½ mile walk from Highlander Park, but there will be a free shuttle service to and from Highlander Park. Sponsors to date include: Publix Super Market Charities, The Tampa Bay Times, Panache Vue` Magazine, Tampa Bay Magazine, Dimmitt Automotive Group, Johnson Pope Bokor Ruppel & Burns, LLP, Tech Data, Dunedin Blue Jays, Clearwater Gas, Enterprise Rent A Car, and Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort and Spa.

Celebrating more than 66 years in Pinellas County, the Junior League of Clearwater-Dunedin, Inc. has raised more than 1.5 million dollars and contributed more than 1 million volunteer hours to the community. All proceeds from this event are reinvested into the community and have helped fund notable projects, such as the Dunedin Fine Arts Center, UPARC Foundation and The Rick Pitino High Point Center to name a few. Currently the League’s focus is on public awareness and supporting the foster care system, with a focus on teens aging out of the system in Pinellas and Pasco Counties. When: November 1st & 2nd, 2014, from 10:00am to 5:00pm Where: Highlander Park, Dunedin, FL (southwest corner of Michigan Ave and Pinehurst Rd.) TESTOSTERONE More Than An Aphrodisiac

“Menopause, Andropause - I turn 40 and my whole body “pauses”? What is happening to me?” This is a question I get asked as people start into “mid-life”. Both women and men have physical changes that are occurring, and most people think this is a natural part of aging and they just accept they are getting older and this is the way life should be. Nothing could be further from the truth. What is really happening is that the body (both women and men) slows down the production of hormones that keep our body and mind healthy and vital. One of the hormones that is vital to our bones, organs, and brain, as well as our libido, is testosterone. Typically we think of this hormone as more important in the male; however, studies have shown that it is very important to women as well. Testosterone is made in the ovaries along with estrogen and progesterone. What is its value for women? Bone density is a huge value that testosterone brings to women. We have a construction crew of cells that work together to either build or tear down bone. Without adequate testosterone, the cells reabsorb more bone than is being made. Thus the bones become more fragile and brittle. When hormones are added back into the female body, there is a remarkable increase in bone density. Doctors are finding that available testosterone can be a predictor of height loss and vertebral fractures. Protecting the heart and cardiovascular system is another role of testosterone for women. It improves cardiac output so energy levels are higher and you feel better. Studies have shown that it can improve good cholesterol and lower triglyceride levels. We can potentially prevent or reduce the seriousness

www.PanacheVue.com

of heart disease by treating with hormone replacement therapy – that is exciting news! Another benefit of testosterone in women is the revitalization of skin texture. It increases collagen content and elasticity in the skin thus helping to prevent wrinkles. Testosterone also adds muscle back into the body, so women notice a more toned and defined figure. All this plus more energy and the desire to be more active are results of adding testosterone back to the body. Women find the strength and endurance they once had. Sexual apathy is another side effect of menopause. Lack of sexual desire is one of the most obvious effects of low testosterone. Estrogen replacement can help by decreasing menopausal symptoms and by moisturizing vaginal tissues. But libido is the primary responsibility of testosterone. When adding testosterone to hormone replacement therapy, women experience a reawakening of sexual desire, which can throw their sex life into full throttle! Men also suffer a type of midlife physical change called “Andropause”. Their bodies reduce the production of testosterone, which affects their bones, organs, brain and libido, just as in women. In men, symptoms of low testosterone are typically a decrease in muscle mass, an increase in belly fat (may be referred to as a “beer belly”) along with fatigue and a disinterest in life. Instead of the vibrant and motivated person he once was, he may now become tired or withdrawn with little energy, no desire to exercise, or other activities he used to enjoy. Adding to the disinterest in life, his libido and performance also declines; so emotionally he doesn’t feel like the strong, virile man he once was. He sense of well being has been lost. Testosterone is truly a life source to the male body. As in the female, it is important for heart health. A recent study of 2500 men showed that those with the lowest testosterone level had the greatest arterial blockage. That study also showed that men with higher baseline levels of testosterone had less car-

diovascular disease and that supplementing with testosterone prevented worsening of cardiovascular disease. Decreasing diabetes, reducing obesity, raising lean body mass, and protecting against heart attacks and progression of heart disease are some of the effects that testosterone therapy can have in the male body. A study from the Annals of Internal Medicine actually demonstrated that men with higher levels of testosterone lived the longest. If those studies and statistics are not enough to encourage any middle-aged man to seek bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, we can look at libido. When men fear that an erection will not last as long as they need, or are fearful of having sex without the aid of the little blue pill, they need to be evaluated for testosterone therapy. The important key to testosterone therapy is to never use the synthetic hormone. Bioidentical hormones are metabolically identical to those the body makes naturally. By replacing hormones with bio-identical, the body responds as it did when it was younger and naturally making the hormones. Am I saying that testosterone is the body’s answer to aging? What I am saying is that when we are young, we are generally stronger, leaner and healthier. As we age, we tend to be more fragile and suffer ill health. One main difference is the hormones our body makes. If we replace, balance and optimize our natural hormones to a level our body needs to feel great, we can view our golden years in a healthier light.

FRANK & RAYE TOSCANO Providing a Place of Warmth, Tranquility and Safety at Red Bamboo Medi Spa PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA SIBLEY

I

t’s been over six years since Dr. Frank Toscano and his wife Raye opened the doors of their unique medi-spa, Red Bamboo in Clearwater. Since 2008, they have provided innovative and advanced aesthetic treatments for clients seeking a more youthful look, enhanced beauty and improved confidence. “It has always been our goal to provide a place of warmth, tranquility and safety for our clients,” said Raye Toscano, a licensed Medical Esthetician, coowner and Executive Spa Director. “Many clients come in just to relax and sip tea overlooking our lovely Zen garden. We love that!” But most come in to take advantage of the unique skills of Dr. Toscano, who has rapidly become the most soughtafter aesthetic physician in the area. “We have Red Bamboo clients who grace the covers of national magazines, clients who fly in from other countries, clients who have national recording contracts and recurring television roles. But to us, each and every client is special and important,” Raye says. “We are known for focusing all of our energy on the specific needs of each individual client.” Frank and Raye Toscano fell in love in Lakeland in

www.PanacheVue.com

1985, moved to Clearwater and were married three years later. “Now, after nearly 30 years in Clearwater, we feel like Florida natives,” says Raye. “We have a son Dominic, a sophomore at the University of Florida, and a daughter Alexa, a senior at Palm Harbor University High School.” Dr. Toscano, a graduate of Duke University, has practiced medicine in the Clearwater area for over 30 years. He served as Chief of Emergency Services at Morton Plant Hospital, as a Member of the Board of Directors and as President of the Hospital Staff. He was recently recognized by the American Board of Emergency Medicine for his fourth Board Certification and for over 30 years of continuous certification. Now he focuses all his efforts on aesthetics at Red Bamboo Medi Spa. Dr. Toscano believes that Botox injections, facial fillers, laser treatments and other advanced aesthetic services require a high level of training and experience and should only be performed by Board Certified Physicians. “We are very excited about the future of aesthetic medicine,” Dr. Toscano says. “It’s no longer enough just to do some injections and have a few lasers. A good PANACHE VUE’

25

aesthetic physician should have a deep and thorough knowledge of the advanced techniques in the use of lasers, fillers and neuromodulators. He should understand how to extract your own platelets and stem cells and use them to rejuvenate your skin, erase wrinkles and soften scars.” Red Bamboo has that kind of experience. They were the very first practice in Pinellas County to introduce SmartLipo Laser Liposuction. At over 1000 procedures, Dr. Toscano has the experience to delicately sculpt away stubborn pads of fat. Red Bamboo was named “Best Liposuction in Tampa Bay” by duPont Registry. In 2010, Red Bamboo became the first practice in the Tampa Bay area to use stem cells and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to enhance skin texture, and in 2012, the first practice in Florida to combine stem cell therapy with the groundbreaking Dermapen to infuse stem cells and PRP back into the skin. Now at Red Bamboo, PRP is also used to treat inflamed joints, ligaments, tendons and fascia. Some of the newer uses of stem cells

PANACHE VUE’

and PRP are particularly exciting. PRP can restore nipple sensitivity after breast augmentation. It can help ladies with stress incontinence restore control and confidence. It can even help ladies with orgasmic dysfunction regain their ability to experience feelings of intimacy with their partner. The best thing about these treatments is that absolutely nothing foreign is injected. The stem cells and PRP are your own. There are no fillers, no stitches, no silicone or collagen. It’s all natural – all you. Dr. Toscano and Red Bamboo have been certified by the American Cosmetic Cellular Medicine Association to perform the PRP O-Shot for Female Orgasm Disorder and Stress Incontinence, the PRP Nipple Shot for lost nipple sensitivity as well as the PRP Vampire Facial for skin rejuvenation. “I think that it’s important to understand that each one of us has some things about ourselves that cause us emotional pain,” Raye Toscano says. “For some, it may be some facial wrinkles or volume

loss. For others, it might be pigmentation issues or a stubborn fat pad that makes us feel badly about ourselves. For some, it may be a loss of intimacy from the inability to enjoy relations with our partner. We, at Red Bamboo, understand these issues and have made it our mission to address as many of them as we can in a warm, sensitive and professional way by combining compassion with state-of-the-art aesthetic techniques. At Red Bamboo, we want to relieve your discomfort, relax your spirit and restore your self-confidence.” In Las Vegas in 2012, Dr. Andrew Ordon from THE Doctors television show awarded Red Bamboo Medi Spa the award for “National Best Aesthetic Practice.” In 2012 and 2013, Tampa Bay Business Journal Readers’ Choice Awards named Red Bamboo “Best in the Biz.” Red Bamboo Medi Spa is located in Clearwater at Northwood Plaza – 2516 McMullen Booth Road. Panache: What was the best and worst time in your life? Frank: The best time for me always seems to be right now. I enjoy what I do tremendously and I truly care about my patients and staff. I love being with them. I have no worst time. I never dwell on bad times. I believe it’s important to let bad feelings go and move forward.

Raye: The best time for me is right now. I love being an Esthetician and performing esthetic services on our clients! Helping our clients with their skin care concerns and seeing their skin improve gives me so much satisfaction. I love seeing their smile when they see how great their skin looks. Panache: What would your second career or business choice be? Frank: I guess I really don’t possess the right skill set to be a rock and roll guitar hero but I can dream can’t I? Raye: I have been blessed with an eye for great design and quality so I would love to be a fashion jewelry buyer for an upscale department store like Nordstrom’s. I would love to travel to all the different manufacturers and to hand pick each and every piece.

Panache: How do you think people perceive you and what is their biggest misconception of you? Frank: I really like to laugh and have fun. I think some people expect me to be more serious minded than I am. Raye: I think that some people might think that I have an easy life. I have had my share of challenges and problems to face. I come from a humble back ground of strong Scotch-Irish Southern farmers. When I was a kid, I had to work in my family’s field a lot while my friends went to the skating rink or to the

movies. My Granddaddy taught me that no one owes you anything in life and that if you want to be successful you will have to work very hard to get there. Panache: What is on your bucket list? Frank: I’d like to see my kids working happily in rewarding careers. I’d like to spend more time in Italy. I feel a strong pull toward my ancestral homeland. I’d like to enter a major poker tournament. I’d like to be present to see my alma mater, Duke, win another

NCAA Basketball championship. Raye: Travel to Kyoto to see the Geishas. I have been fascinated with Geishas since I was a child and I love Japanese culture and food. I would also love to travel back to Italy, Rome is my favorite city in the world. I would love to pet a tiger in the tiger wildlife sanctuary in Thailand run by Buddhist monks. The tigers are allowed to run free and people from all over the world travel there to see them. My other wishes are to go on an Alaskan cruise and run a 5K.

Panache: What do you do in your spare time that would be a surprise to those who don’t know you so well? Frank: I love to play poker. For three years, I wrote a monthly column for a national poker magazine. I don’t play for high stakes but I try hard to play as well as I possibly can. Raye: I love anything vintage especially the Art Deco period. I have been an avid antique collector since my early twenties. I also collect vintage clothing, shoes, and accessories from the 1940’s through the early 1960’s. Panache: What one person, dead or alive www.PanacheVue.com

would love to meet and get to know more than anyone else? Frank: Theoretical physicist Brian Greene thinks very deeply about the structure and origins of the universe. I probably wouldn’t understand his answers, but I’ve got a lot of questions to ask him. Raye: Margaret Thatcher. She was the first woman elected to British Parliament and went on to be one of the most intelligent and influential female leaders of our time. She endured immense criticism and sexual discrimination from her male peers but she never gave up. Her strength, endurance and resolve has always inspired me. PANACHE VUE’

A

hhh, what a wonderful two weeks of pure fashion pleasure! It all kicked off with the fabulous Haute Accessories Week, coordinated by The Fashion Movement, and the equally impressive Tampa Bay Fashion Week. The first week of visual excitement was provided by a variety of accessories from our local designers. The jewelry showcased was dedicated to both genders, and to all ages. Elegant and playful hats were the show stopper of the night, and unique bow ties complimented the runway. Shoe designs, inspired by the West African culture, taught us how comfortable fashion can be, and jewelry made with Turkish style showed us how to decorate the entire hand with class. Not to be outdone, the Tampa Bay Fashion Week also showcased local designers. Tampa Bay “A” listers, local media and invited guests all gathered for one

night to view incredible designs brought to life in fabulous garments. What a night! There were designs for all tastes including metallic colors decorating some of the models’ bodies to night gowns and men’s wear. I really enjoyed seeing the range of lengths in dresses and skirts, a length for every taste. The skirts were flawless and elegant, and the dresses were dreams come true! Prints were not left behind; some of them were beautifully retro-esque, resembling prints from other eras such as the 60’s and 70’s, while others were floral or even followed straight lines. Last but definitely not least, printed leathers and lace also took their walk along the runway adding a further dimension of contrast and capturing audience imagination. We cannot close this fashion segment without mentioning the incredible works of the fashion design students that showcased their designs on the runway. We all wish them good luck in their future endeavors. You guys rock!

Dali Hernandez is the Creative Director and head designer for House of Dali. She is also a Real Estate Agent operating in the Tampa Bay area. Dali’s arrival to the fashion industry has been making numerous headlines; however designing is nothing new for this NY native. She recalls her childhood’s obsession with fashion magazines, and with the help of a pair of scissors, she would cut various designs to mix and match and ultimately transform her bedroom walls into the latest fashion show. The days she went fabric shopping with her mother gave her an early perspective on quality variation and how the same design can be completely altered due to fabric choice. Dali’s fashion line is for the woman who still maintains her social status and is not afraid to make a fashion statement. She feels that there shouldn’t really be a target age or group for her line, because she feels that women are sexy and edgy at any age. Dali was featured on FOX13, What’s Hot Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Pulse, Vocess International, Creative Loafing, tbttimes, St. Pete Times, Panache Vue, Remark Magazine, Libertine Magazine, Envie, and was Semi Finalist for “Fashion Star” NBC. HEALTH

INFLAMMATION AND FOOD BY CHARLYN FARGO

I

nflammation is the body’s method of healing itself in response to an injury or exposure to a harmful substance. However, inflammation is not always beneficial. Chronic (or ongoing) inflammation occurs when the immune system attacks the body’s healthy cells leading to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, states of immune deficiency including Crohn’s disease or skin conditions including psoriasis. Underlying chronic inflammation also may play a role in heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Although evidence supporting the impact of specific foods on inflammation in the body is limited, some foods have the capacity to suppress inflammation, but it’s unclear how often and how much is needed for this benefit. Though there’s promising research for the impact of foods such as fatty fish, berries and tart cherry juice, beware of anything touted as an anti-inflammatory miracle. “Current science advocates overall good nutrition to help enhance the body’s immune system and provide antioxidants to reduce inflammatory stress,” said Cheryl Orlansky, registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator. “Healthy fats, such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, reduce inflammation and help regulate membrane function. These types of fats should be included in a healthy diet. Remove those fats that turn on inflammatory processes, such as saturated fat from meats,

butter, cream sauces, fried foods and trans fat found in many processed foods. Here are some other tips for reducing inflammation: --Let fruits and vegetables make up at least half your plate at meals. Take care to regularly fit in fresh, frozen or dried berries and cherries. Be sure to eat a variety of vegetables, including leafy greens such as kale, chard and Brussels sprouts. --Opt for plant-based sources of protein including beans, nuts and seeds. --Choose whole grains instead of refined ones. Swap brown, black or wild rice for white rice; whole oats or barley for cream of wheat; and whole-wheat bread instead of white. --Swap heart-healthy fats for not so healthy ones. Olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds are a few delicious choices. --Choose fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and anchovies to get a heart-healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids. --Season your meals with fresh herbs and spices. They pack a flavorful and antioxidant-rich punch. Q and A Q: Is it true that coffee lowers cancer risk? If so, does the type of coffee roast or the way it’s prepared make a difference? A: The clearest link between coffee and cancer risk is seen in the latest scientific report on preventing endometrial cancer from AICR/WCRF showing that coffee probably reduces risk of that cancer. That link was seen regardless of whether coffee was regular or decaf. Other analyses that have pulled together multiple studies suggest that coffee may decrease risk of liver, colorectal and other types of cancer. Some of the substances in coffee that

may protect against cancer include chlorogenic acids, caffeoylquininic acid and lignans. In laboratory tests, these compounds seem to turn on the antioxidant defense system and enzymes that deactivate carcinogens and encourage healthy levels of hormones related to cancer risk. But there are still many questions about coffee and cancer risk. Studies looking at types of roast and methods for preparing coffee so far do not provide consistent answers about whether these factors influence the protective effects of coffee. Coffee brewed with paper filters (common in the United States), seems to pose less hazard for blood cholesterol levels compared to boiled coffee (popular in Nordic and Middle East countries), but that does not seem to apply to cancer risk. Follow your healthcare provider’s advice about coffee consumption as it relates to other health issues; for now, there’s no reason to fear coffee as a cancer risk, and not enough solid data to choose one type over another for better protection. HEALTH

AGE-RELATED MUSCLE LOSS AND WEAKNESS can Be Prevented by Weight Training BY DAVID LIPSCHITZ

G

rowing older is always accompanied by gradual loss of muscle that is replaced by fat. Despite gaining weight from about 25 onward, we also lose muscle, so that at age 50 our total muscle mass is about 70 percent of that at age 30, and by aged 80 half of our peak muscle mass is lost. Total body weight remains constant as loss of muscle is replaced by even more fat. Thus even if your weight has remained totally constant for decades, you will have proportionally more fat at age 60 than you did at 25. Although muscle loss is in part because of inactivity, a major reason is an alteration in a primitive muscle cell called a myocyte. When muscle fibers are lost or damaged, myocytes proliferate, differenti-

ate and replace them. With age, myocytes loose their ability to repair damaged muscle leading to loss of muscle mass. Muscle loss leads to weakness that has profound implications. Weak muscles lead to weak bones and osteoporosis. Weak muscles together with alterations in tendons and ligaments contribute to joint instability that leads to osteoarthritis. Muscle weakness, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis contribute to difficulties with gait and balance, an inability to walk without assistance and eventually to a dreaded fall. And remember: More people die of falls and fractures than from prostate, breast and colon cancer combined. There are other negative consequences of reductions in muscle mass. Muscle is the most metabolically active component of the body. Decreased muscle means profound reductions in energy or calorie needs. So older persons consume less food, less protein and less vitamins and minerals each day. And yet the requirements for protein and most vitamin and minerals actually increase with age. Less food intake, less protein and nutrient intake leads to a much higher risk of severe malnutrition, particularly if nutritional needs are increased by the presence of a serious illness.

Another untoward effect of less muscle and more fat is the development of insulin resistance, which impairs the ability of the hormone to deliver glucose to the cell and leads to diabetes. While we cannot stop the muscle mass loss that accompanies aging or, as yet, return the bones of an 80-year-old women into those of a teenage athlete, we can make bones stronger and reduce all of the negative effects of age-related muscle loss merely by exercising. Perhaps one of the greatest breakthroughs in the prevention of frailty comes from the research of Dr. William Evans, who showed that even in 90-year-olds, resistance training or exercising with weights can increase strength by over 170 percent, increase muscle and bone mass, improve metabolism, increase food intake and even improve mood. More importantly gait and balance are dramatically improved, leading to an 80 percent reduction in fall and fracture risk. Something as low tech as exercising with weights can prevent dependency and, most importantly, save billions in health care costs while simultaneously improving quality of life. Weight training has become an integral part of the rehabilitation of older persons who are unable to get around. It is also one of the key ways to prevent frailty and dependency in old age. To be effective, the weight used must be sufficient in that the muscle being exercised is virtually exhausted after 8 to 10 repetitions. I do not recommend buying weights and exercising at home. In general, most don’t exercise adequately, are more prone to injury and do not sustain the effort. Weight training must be done under the supervision of a trainer or a physical therapist, at least until you have learned the ropes. No matter the disability, be it a previous stroke, joint disease or other medical problem, there is a program that can be designed to meet your needs. I strongly recommend that no matter your age, you join a health club and begin both an aerobic and resistance-training program. Not only will the quality of your life be improved but your risk of many illnesses will be reduced, and believe it or not, your life will be prolonged.

HEALTH & FITNESS

WATER FITNESS

BENEFITS

T

he unique properties of water combine to offer one of the most effective environments for an exercise program. Water fitness is the great equalizer – participants of a wide range of skill and fitness levels can enjoy this low-impact, total body conditioning workout. With the addition of high-quality equipment, the benefits of a water workout are endless.

GETTING FIT: TOTAL BODY CONDITIONING

• Studies have shown convincingly that water workouts decrease body fat as effectively as land-based exercise programs. • Without performing a single sit-up, a water workout tones and strengthens the abdominals as a result of maintaining a vertical posture against the water’s resistance.

36

PANACHE VUE’

• Water offers a three-in-one workout for cardiovascular and muscular conditioning and enhanced flexibility. This timeefficient, total body conditioning workout results in increased strength and endurance, and improved biomechanics and balance. • Low-impact aquatic workouts can prevent the injury, strain and re-injury common to many land-based exercise. Water supports 90 percent of the body’s weight – resulting in reduced stress on joints, muscles, tendon and ligaments. • Water is a natural and instantly adjustable weight-training machine. Resistance is approximately four to 42 times greater in water than air. A workout can be as vigorous or light as desired by effectively utilizing the water’s resistance. • Unlike most land activities, water provides resistance in all directions, so both sides of the muscle pair can be strength-

ened simultaneously. For example, an arm curl works both biceps and triceps, since there is resistance to the movement in both directions. • An upright water workout can be more effective than swimming, because the body’s vertical position increases resistance 75 percent over swimming laps. Water Fitness Benefits -- 2

FEELING GOOD: FITNESS FOR A LIFETIME

• A regular water fitness program can result in the permanent reduction of blood pressure. Water’s hydrostatic pressure helps the heart circulate blood, which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise versus similar exertions on land. • Practical daily movements such as walking, lifting and reaching can be incorpo-

• Buoyancy equipment, such as the patented AquaJogger® belt, suspend the body securely and comfortably, supporting the head and neck out of the water, so hair stays dry and glasses can be worn. Water Fitness Benefits -- 3 • Especially beneficial to individuals with disabilities is the fact that water workouts offer a greater range of motion and freedom of movement than many land-based exercise.

rated into a water fitness workout to enhance functionality. This can result in the ability to enjoy and perform the activities of daily life with greater energy and ease. A water workout can be a social activity just like fitness walking or riding side-byside stationary bikes. With access to an indoor pool, water exercise becomes a great year-round activity, as well as a safe workout option during inclement weather. It can also be an affordable alternative to at-home workouts which often involve more expensive equipment. Water exercise is both exhilarating and therapeutic – reducing stress-related symptoms such as high blood pressure and muscle spasms. The water’s full body massage action provides a vigorous yet deeply relaxing workout that is usually pain free. Water exercise involves all muscle groups, yet virtually eliminates muscle soreness – leaving the muscles relaxed instead of

tight and sore.

WATER WALKING: NO SWIM SKILLS REQUIRED

• Water walking and running movements are simple to learn and require no swim skills, making deep water workouts accessible to virtually everyone – from those just beginning a workout program to those looking for a great cross-training option. • Whether in peak condition or recovering from surgery, the water’s forgiving environment supports and offers a light or challenging workout according to the person’s need – for both fragile physical therapy clients and intense athletes. • The water’s buoyancy helps even the uncoordinated land exerciser achieve a measure of grace with movements that are easy to learn. The fact that water obscures less than stellar bodies also makes this exercise appealing to the self-conscious.

• Water exercise demands the continual use of the abdominal and back muscles as well as the arms and legs in order to maintain erect body alignment and balance. This strengthening of the core abdominals and back can assist in managing and preventing back pain. • Water exercise enables a person to preserve as much fitness and function as possible while rehabilitating an injury. Many people heal to over 100 percent of preinjury strength and may actually improve their fitness level. Some individuals who have committed to aquatic therapy found their recovery time is reduced by half. • Heat is lost 25 times faster in water than air, allowing for longer and more comfortable workouts. This natural cooling of the body is particularly beneficial for people who tend to overheat during exercise, and in conditions such as pregnancy or multiple sclerosis, where maintaining a lower core body temperature is very important. • The water’s pressure helps the heart circulate blood which accounts for lower blood pressure and heart rates during deep water exercise. As a result of this hydrostatic pressure, water exercise may be one of the best and safest activities for cardiac patients. It also helps reduce swelling, allowing many people with arthritis or injuries to exercise. n To find a retailer near you visit www.AquaJogger.com or call 1-800-922-9544. AN ADVENTURE ODYSSEY FROM SAMANA TO CABARETE BY STUART WASSERMAN

O

n my second trip to the Dominican Republic I wanted a bit of adventure, so I started on a wild and natural peninsula called Samana, where my short stay included boat rides through Las Haitises National Park, through cays and around karst rock that emerged out of the sea millions of years ago. Nearby caves feature Taino and Ciguayos Indian petroglyphs. Each winter the North Atlantic migratory whales choose the Samana Peninsula as their prime area to calve. Whale-watching season runs from midJanuary through mid-March, and during my morning outing I was lucky enough to see many humpback whales jumping

38

joyfully. But even when it’s not whale season, there’s plenty to do in Samana. One popular offering is the excursion into the countryside to Limon Falls, a huge waterfall set in a tropical paradise. The reward after a horseback ride or walk to the falls is a swim in the big pool in front of the falls and the ability to pop under the falls in little side caves. One of the prettiest beaches in the area is said to be Las Galeras, where a few French Canadians reside. I would also add Playa Rincon to the list. This three-mile-long white sand beach can be reached by four-wheel drive or a short boat ride over from the next bay. There is usually at least one fish restaurant owned by a family of fishermen on these out-ofthe-way beaches by the turquoise Atlantic Ocean. Extensive new tollways make getting about the Dominican Republic easy, and there has been a surge in new lodging construction around the island. Many of the hotels feature great balconies with views, such as Hotel Magnifico, which is owned by French-Canadian Gerard Hebert. He was one of the early ones to take up roost in Cabarete back in the

early 1980s, and he has slowly built up a unique lodging spread over extensive gardens a half-block from the beach. Many balconies have a sea view. Hebert credits another French Canadian, a professional windsurfer named Jean Laporte, for Cabarete’s discovery back in 1984, calling him “the Christopher Columbus of Cabarete.” I found stand-out balconies at the 3-year-old Bannister Hotel just outside of Samana town in Puerto Bahia. Here the balconies look over a new marina that attracts some yachters from the United States. I also loved the huge balconies of Balcones del Atlantico, located just outside the French-Canadian enclave of Las Terrenas, where up to 2,000 Frenchspeaking people live at least part of the year. Las Terrenas is located on the Samana Peninsula about 35 minutes from Samana town, which was formerly known as Santa Barbara de Samana. Balcones del Atlantico features a beachfront fine-dining restaurant called Porto, which fronts the tranquil Atlantic and a private beach. Delicious standards are mahi-mahi and their tasty pumpkin soup. Many of the 30 villa rental suites

have three bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room and a wide balcony. During my stay I met three couples from Kentucky who rented one three-bedroom villa for a week. Much of my personal adventure came from my choice to ride public transportation to get around the peninsula and for the longer ride to Cabarete on the north coast. It included buses, vans called “gua guas,” and even riding on the back of motor scooters or moto conchos, a common form of taxi transportation in the Dominican Republic. I took the ride on the daily bus that runs from Samana to Cabarete. The cost for the three-and-a-half-hour ride that offers views of the island coastline was about $5. It would have cost $200 for a private car to make that journey, and I would not have had the opportunity to meet the locals. Marcus Bohm, a German man who has lived in Cabarete for 24 years, gave me a good bit of advice: “A smile goes a long way in the Dominican Republic.” And that turned out to be true. I enjoyed hearing Spanish spoken on the bus, though it was so rapid that I understood little. One man offered to sell me land but I politely told him, “No gracias.” I got off at Janet’s

Supermarket and then it was only a halfblock to Hotel Magnifico. Cabarete is a sports town. Many of the foreign residents come to windsurf, surf, kite-board or paddle-board, the latter becoming a fast-growing sport according to Bohm, who each February organizes an international sporting competition called “Master of the Ocean.” Cabarete has a burgeoning restaurant scene with many restaurants offering evening dining on the sand under colorful lights and lanterns. A number of restaurants are owned and operated by young French or Italian entrepreneurs. I met Jennifer Cantrell and Mike Walker of Liberty, Missouri, in a small Cabarete breakfast spot. They did the same journey as I from Samana to Cabarete, but they rented a car at the airport in Santo Domingo for about $900 for a week. Then they drove about two and a half hours to Samana, stayed there for a few nights and then drove another three hours to Cabarete, stopping at pretty beaches along the way. Jerry and Teri Fleeson from Cleveland, Ohio, whom I met at Popi’s, a fish restaurant on Cabarete Beach, have already booked a return trip for February 2015.

“Cabarete has become our favorite get-out-of-snow getaway destination,” Jerry said. He also gave me a great tip for an early breakfast on the beach at Velas, which opens at 7:30 a.m. as the sun splashes color across the golden sand beach. It’s easy to find and offers outdoor dining, good coffee and a great view of stand-up paddle-boarders floating off into a cloudless distant horizon.
