ackpack safety and education is vital in the health of children. Backpacks with single straps should be avoided completely because of their effects on the spine. Parents should instead obtain doublestrapped backpacks and encourage the children to wear both straps when carrying the loads. ver the years in our home of 3 active boys my wife, Debbie, kept command central in control by juggling sports, school , social calendars and work. The mantra in our home was “when mamma is happy, everyone is happy”! Today we laugh about it, but moms of today juggle so many family responsibilities and set the tone for the home. Not only do they manage the family lives, they very often put their own needs last making sure everyone else’s needs are met. Many times in our
dental office I meet moms who are in desperate need of dental treatment but choose to put their children’s needs first. While this is very important, I would like to encourage those moms to think about the model they are setting for their children and somehow find a way to take care of themselves too. Artist in Exile ON EXHIBIT FROM SEPTEMBER 29 – NOV. 24, 2013 “My work is about daydreams, where the unreal is real.” - Tomás Marais Tomás Marais (1931-2004) was a Cuban-born artist who trained at the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he mastered the printmaking technique of woodcut. He immigrated to Paris, France in the 1964, escaping the Communists who had taken over his native country. He exhibited extensively with the second generation of European surrealist artists before moving to the Tampa Bay area in the 1980s. A prolific artist, Marais worked in a variety of media and his dream-like paintings with their vivid colors reflected his highly personal expression that is often associated with family and friends. The retrospective exhibition includes woodblock prints, paintings and collages dating from the late 1950’s to the beginning of this century and was organized by Ken Rollins, former director of the Gulf Coast Museum of Art. The works have been selected from the collections of the LeepaRattner Museum of Art, the St. Petersburg College Foundation Collection and the holdings of the Marais family.

aptain Stewart Ames, considered to be among the best local, inshore captains, has been fishing in the Northern Pinellas County waters for over 20 years. Because of his love and passion for the outdoors and the sport, his hobby became a dream come true when he incorporated Gone Fishing Charters in 2006. This was not an overnight decision for Captain Ames, but something that he knew he was destined to do. He shares with us how it all came about. “The short answer is that I love to fish! The longer answer is, at 46 years of age, I had been traveling the US in sales and sales management positions for almost 25 years. Knowing that I needed a change, I started reading a variety of books that I felt would help me figure out how to move in a direction that would positively impact my life. I read a book called “Half Time” by Bob Buford and it resonated with me. My biggest take away from the book was that you spend the first half of your life doing what you have to do so that, in the second half of your life, you can do what you were meant to do. Within weeks, I informed our CEO that I needed to make a change. Shortly after this, we came to an agreement that I would stick around for 6 months, long enough to affect a smooth transition, and then I would leave the company. Although I had no clear plan as to what I would do when I left, I knew I would work for myself and that I would not travel as I had grown tired of being away from family and friends. Four months after my departure…much of this time spent fishing on my new boat…I decided that I would fish for a living and Gone Fishing Charters was formed.” Captain Ames’ primary company focus is to provide an outstanding experience for his customers at a reasonable cost. “All of us, as customers, want the best possible

service at the lowest possible price. Most companies, mine included, cannot provide both. My prices are competitive but lower cost fishing guides are available.” Captain Stewart Ames is committed to providing the following: a clean, well maintained fishing boat equipped with new, high quality tackle; an atmosphere of professionalism and courtesy where the customer feels comfortable and respected; an education on both general fishing tactics as well as fishing techniques related to the fish targeted; a successful fishing charter where the targeted species are caught. “There are rare days when fish should bite and don’t; however on most trips, the expectations set are achieved.” We asked Captain Ames what his plans were for growing Gone Fishing Charters in the near and distant horizon? “The inshore charter fishing business is hard to grow beyond the physical capacity of the owner. My initial goal was to run about 175 trips a year and, after 7 years in the business, I am doing this. In terms of growing an inshore fishing business beyond a one man operation, the numbers don’t really work when you look at both the cost of additional equipment (boats) and the employees to run them. So, like many fishing guides, what makes the most sense it to look for other businesses to start that don’t create a time conflict with the current business. I have just recently created a websitewww. TampaFlFishing.com, which I am hopeful will generate increasing amounts of advertising revenue over the next few years. Additionally, my wife Lindsay and I own and manage several rental homes in the area, which we have acquired since starting Gone Fishing Charters. Our hope is to pick up another property or two in the next

few years to better secure our retirement. Two things immediately come to mind when people ask me what I like best about owning my own business. First, being the owner of any small business is a liberating and exciting experience. You own all of the successes and failures and you get to make all of the decisions. Second, at age 55, there are few things that create a feeling of pure excitement for me like hooking a large fish! As we age, it seems that life gets more complicated and it’s harder to find activities that create pure joy. Every die hard fisherman knows the feeling that I am talking about. A friend of mine said it best about 15 years ago. We were sitting in his kitchen with his wife after fishing all morning and, of course, we were talking fishing. She looked at us and said “I can’t believe that you guys just finished fishing and all you can do when you get home is talk about fishing”. My friend looked at her and said, “We’re passionate about fishing. I just feel bad for the people who haven’t yet discovered their passion in life.” Well put, I thought. As we celebrate Labor Day and the end of summer, it’s time to get down to business again and rethink those professional wardrobes. “What to wear to work is an issue that’s more complicated than merely adhering to a dress code,” says Lisa Armstrong, author of “Harper Bazaar Fashion: Your Guide to

Personal Style.” The good news according to Armstrong is that what we do choose to wear professionally is “an opportunity to express your individual style.” Here are some guidelines from “Harper Bazaar” for working girls everywhere that are ready to leave the flip flops behind and put some power into their office attire: As a rule of thumb, the best cues come from your boss. If she’s immaculate, then make time for grooming. If she has a slightly haphazard attitude about her appearance, then a low-key approach, without compromising your own standards, is wise. Don’t sublimate your personality, but develop a complementary style. It is
basic modern-business etiquette. Identifying a uniform, however loosely you end up interpreting it, is a useful exercise because it helps you to concentrate on investment pieces. Do your colleague’s flannel pants and fine-gauge crewnecks ooze relaxed authority? Then think about how you could mirror that in your own way. Maybe it’s with a straight, dark skirt, a pretty blouse and a pair of wedge shoes. Perhaps, the office vibe is more iconoclastic. In that case, you’d be amazed how useful a well-cut leather jacket can be. One fabulously timeless jacket is where the bulk of your investment should go. Find something in a medium or lightweight wool, since you don’t want a jacket that spends most of its office life draped over the back of your chair. A little bit of stretch means the jacket will retain its shape on business trips, and luxe materials will elevate even jeans. Save the throwaway fashion statements for weekends. Three pairs of pants or three skirts should be enough for starters. Five tops to every skirt or pair of pants you own is plenty. Consider medium-to-heavy-weight silk blouses that will look good with or without a jacket. The bow blouse is a big hit this fall. While the dress can be a one-stop piece, smart separates that can be mixed and matched will provide working girls with many more options. One good tip: Don’t worry about exact matches, work tonally. Steer away from anything overly eye-popping. Instead of brights, think intense, rich shades. And yes, you can wear white after Labor Day! Once you’ve got the pieces in place, mixing textures is an effective way to achieve a balance of formal and modern. Try, for instance, a tweed jacket with velvet pants or a leather bomber jacket with gabardine pants. They can look exceedingly smart without falling into the deathly trap of boring corporation. Finish off your tailored work wear with interesting accessories that express your own style personality. Try a neutral strappy sandal instead of classic pumps or a sleek and brightly colored handbag. Lighten up power suits with a bold necklace or big cuff bracelet. After all, even working girls want to have some fun! n
To Bang or Not to Bang

To bang or not to bang…this is the question. Some sort of bang or fringe is always in style. Deciding on bangs is an individual decision and fortunately, they typically look good at any age. If you are going for a more youthful look, bangs can shape up your current style and further define the face. A few things to consider as you choose a style of bangs: Hair type is important as correctly cutting a bang on fine hair can actually give the illusion of thickness. Hair texture also comes into play as straighter hair or that with a soft bend is easier to cut bangs on versus that of naturally curly hair. (As many of you may know!) Finally, bangs should be cut to enhance your face shape. For example, if you would like to enhance your eyes, bangs should be cut just to the brow line. Cutting bangs too thick and long can actually enhance your nose, so you’ll want to keep that in mind if its not a feature in which you want to draw attention. Oval face shapes tend to be able to wear any type of bang while round faces for instance, look best with a soft layered bang that gently sits on the cheek area. This method can enhance cheek bones and take away from the roundness of the face shape. For those with a square face shape, a longer side-swept bang that forms in toward the jaw to soften the squareness of the face and jawline is ideal. A bang is a great way to change up your current look without any drastic changes. So go for that change this fall and winter with bangs.

A New Way to Age
O
ver the last ten years I have dedicated my life to empowering my patients’ lives through nutritional counseling and lifestyle modification. During these years, we have been successful in changing and improving thousands of lives. in sexual desire and activity, difficulty sleeping, and nonspecific but noticeable memory problems. Many women express challenging night sweats along with an increased sense of anxiety or feeling frustrated a lot more easily. The problem here is, again, a dysfunctional endocrine system. As we age, it is a natural process that our youthful, hormonal levels decrease. Hormones control virtually all of the functions of the body including our reproductive, immune and metabolic systems. Hormones have a direct role in controlling our overall physical and mental health. As the levels decline we begin to lose our energy, vitality and health. T
he word creative just doesn’t do the Wearable Art 9 show justice. Feathers, doilies, playing cards, cotton balls, aluminum strips, balloons, and so much more made up the brilliantly designed “Wearable Art.” Hosted by the Dunedin Fine Art Center, this event brought hundreds of people and raised much needed funds for the center’s many projects and ongoing expansion. Artists and designers for this event included Julian Hartzog, Lina Teixeira, Eve Kuczynski, Johnson Hunt, Melissa Dolce, Neva “the Diva” Durham, Mark Byrne, The Garden Fairies, Rogerio Martins, and Alice Ferrulo. The collaborative efforts of DFAC,
the volunteers, and sponsors, did an outstanding job putting this event together, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year! The collaboration between Andrew Ashton of LaPosh Salon in Clearwater and Gregory Brady’s Salon GW in Dunedin worked so well last year in designing all the looks of hair and makeup for Wearable Art, the two salons work closely together again this year. To illustrate, take the case study of a 22-year-old female who was severely scarred on the face during a car accident in October 2009. After six plastic surgeries and the application of different products, the patient was still unsatisfied with her complexion. In March 2013, PCCA suggested a compounded medicine containing Pentoxifylline 1%, Caffeine 1% and Tranilast 1% in PracaSil-Plus topical gel (Figure 1) to be applied twice a day on the old facial scars. After 3 weeks of treatment, the patient was surprised by the softening of her skin and overall improvement of her complexion (Figures 2 and 3). I
nstinctually, we all come hard-wired with this pursuit-of-happiness impulse, and yet the feeling is so darn elusive. Oftentimes, it seems that the busy-ness of life thwarts our most innate desire at every turn. It’s such an important social topic that Time Magazine devoted an entire issue to the subject last June. Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project started as a book, but has become a 21st Century lifestyle manifesto. And the term “finding happiness” returns 99 million Google results. Which begs the question; if you had a shot at happiness — literally, an injection — would you take it?

It’s called facial feedback and the premise is simple: The expressions we make on our face are connected to the emotions we feel. If you smile broadly, you WILL feel happier at that moment. In fact, you need your smile to help you feel the emotion. Conversely, the act of frowning will negatively impact your thinking, coloring your outlook accordingly. By paralyzing the facial muscles used for frowning, Botox prevents people from physically displaying expressions of negative emotion which, in turn, makes them feel happier. The science itself is fascinating, and the evidence supporting Botox for happiness seems to be mounting. Psychologists at the University of Cardiff in Wales found that people whose ability to frown was compromised by injections such as Botox were happier, on average, than people who could frown. Indeed, the Botox recipients reported feeling happier and less anxious in general. In a related study, scientists at the Technical University of Munich in Germany scanned Botox recipients with MRI machines while asking them to mimic angry faces. According to a study published in May 2008 in the Journal of Pain, people who frown during an unpleasant procedure report feeling more pain than those who do not. These studies and more are explored in a new book called The Faces of Emotion by Dr. Eric Finzi, who suggests that the link between Botox and depression is an important one. Triggering more than a simple confidence boost, Botox not only has the potential to bring relief to patients suffering from depression or anger issues, but to spur long-term happiness.

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL BY: CHERYL PEROTTI FOUNTAINHEAD DESIGN

nterior design, like the fashion industry, is an art form subject to trends, styles, and marketing. What is fresh and new today can tend to date your interiors tomorrow. Wall to wall mirrors were very vogue decades ago. We used them in foyers, living rooms, dining rooms and bathrooms to expand spaces and provide visual interest. Today we still love to add expansion and reflection to our interiors, but the wall to wall has been largely replaced by framed mirrors. Most bathrooms in older homes awaiting remodel have the typical frameless mirror above the vanity area. At times it is desirable to leave the existing mirror and simply frame it in with molding to suit the decor. If removal is planned, consider the possibility of installing a recessed medicine cabinet that fits flush to the wall and when closed

looks like a beautifully framed mirror. These can be ordered in various shapes and sizes, with a multitude of frame and style options. Since older homes are notorious for limited closet space, the built in is a perfect solution for updating the look and adding storage. If your home has a room with very little natural light, a strategically placed mirror can work magic to brighten the area. Remember to always keep the size of your mirror relative to the size of the furniture you are hanging it above or the size of the wall space it will occupy. Rule of thumb is a ratio somewhere between 2/3 to 3/4 of the width. An unexpected and therefore dramatic area for a mirror is within the confines of a partially enclosed and covered porch or lanai. Not only will it add light to a potentially darker area of your exterior living space, but it will also extend the charm of your home’s interior to your outside spaces. When shopping for a mirror, browse the Internet for a plethora of the sculptural, artistic, and architectural selections on the market. Even when decorating on a budget, it will inform you as to trends and styles so that you can begin to research overstocks and close outs for the
look you want. Also, don’t ignore an older mirror with an outdated gilt frame. It can easily be lacquered in a bold color, black, or neutral to match a more contemporary decor, finished with a hammered metallic paint, or given an old world wood finish with a gel stain. Oversized framed mirrors ( I call them mirrors on steroids) are still popular and can expand your space visually while adding a definite Wow factor to your design. My personal favorite is the oversized mirror found casually leaning against a wall! And a gallery of various sized and shaped mirrors can be a bright focal point when accomplished with architectural balance and scale. But wherever a mirror hangs, the view it reflects has to be considered. As an example, you would probably not want to introduce the mirror image of an adjoining bath or cooking area to your living room. A wall to wall mirror sometimes feels like a challenge because it may occupy the best wall for locating artwork. But artwork can be gracefully suspended from the ceiling to hang in front of mirrored areas, providing warmth, color and a surprise element to your interior. Finally, If you do have a wall to wall mirror in your home and you love the view it reflects or the volume of light it provides, then ignore the trend and just enjoy.

Q: We went a little crazy over the Country Look and ended up with a house full of calico and old teddy bears and furniture with lots of peeling paint. Now it’s 20 years later and we want a new look -- something more contemporary -- but who can afford to start all over? What now? A: Timing is everything. Half the country went mad for the Country Look back in the ‘80s, and no wonder: It’s nostalgic and charming, comfortable and easy to live with. Also inexpensive, at least in the early days, and it had a history -- ours. The nation had literally grown up with those calicoes and that farmhouse furniture. We could sense our own past in old quilts and bent-willow benches. We could relax around all that imperfection: peeling paint, rusted metals, casually mismatched patterns. Then, suddenly, it was all too much! Even Raymond Waites, the mega-designer who’s credited with “inventing” the Country Look, soon struck off in a new direction (somewhere half-way between Traditional American and pure Baroque).
Now comes another designer, long celebrated for his farmhouse style, who is rethinking his signature look in a new book, “Terry John Woods’ Farmhouse Modern,” due out Oct. 1 from Stewart, Tabori and Chang. You’ll find comfort in his words (and inspiration in the works-of-art photographs by Kindra Clineff): “Traditional Farmhouse style ... remains close to my heart; but I also now find myself drawn to the lines of modern and industrial design pieces,” Woods writes in the introduction to the book. Heresy? Hardly. Woods is going through the evolution of taste we all should as we grow up and older. We discover new ways to look and live. Our ideas change, and so should our homes. But that doesn’t mean you have to jettison all your old stuff. Woods orchestrates an intriguing mix of Then and Now. But his most modern statement is about space. It’s now clean and uncluttered. Walls are white; floors are bare; accessories are spare (but there’s still space for the vintage-style teddy bears that made Woods’ design fame in the l980s; see ter-
ryjohnwoods.com). His old treasures are showcased like sculptures. Here’s an elegant case in point: a collection of old-fashioned lacy porcelain looks cool and contemporary interspersed with other shapes and shown off, white-onwhite, in an under-stair alcove. Q: Can design make you LOL? A: As long as you don’t cringe at bad puns. Also due out next month (from Rizzoli) is “Mario Buatta: Fifty Years of American Interior Decoration.” Never mind that he’s a celebrated designer-to-the-rich-and-famous, Mario is also famous for his humor and practical jokes, like addressing a serious design organization in broken English, wearing a bad toupee. He says his mother’s all-white living room gave him snow-blindness (here, he shows a blank white slide) and inspired the famously wild mix of colorful patterns that nicknamed him “The Prince of Chintz.” However, Mario’s best -- and often quoted joke -- no doubt included in his enormous seven-pound book: “I consider dust a protective coating for fine furniture.” n

That Influenced Dior

n his dictionary of style, the iconic French fashion designer Christian Dior said, “After women, flowers are the most lovely things God has given the world,” and he followed up his belief by incorporating floral themes into his fashions, which he felt enhanced a woman’s beauty. Dior grew up in Villa Les Rhumbs, a 19th-century Belle Epoque home -- salmon-colored with decorative metal grill-

work -- which is surrounded by a spacious garden influenced by English landscaped parks. The property sits above the sea in Granville, a city on Normandy’s coast not far from Mont-Saint-Michel. As a child, Dior helped his mother design and tend her garden, and this interest aroused a passion for floral motifs that continued through the years as his became one of the most famous fashion houses in Paris. Florals had long been a tradition, but Dior’s imagination took the genre to new heights. The Villa Les Rhumbs is now the Christian Dior Museum, the only “Musee de France” dedicated to a fashion designer. Three floors exhibit haute-couture garments --a selection of dresses, gowns, outfits and hats created by Dior and his successors, Yves Saint Laurent, John Galliano and Raf Simons. Dior cherished the Impressionists’ images of the region’s sun, sky, wind, sea and cliffs. He adopted all these elements as the underlying inspirations for his fabric patterns and colors. The element of motion featured in Dior’s designs as it had in the paintings
of the artists. In Edgar Degas’ “Before the Performance,” for example, the ballet dancers warm up backstage in costumes that glow in yellow and flow as if weightless even as they depict the exhausting discipline of ballet. In response, the House of Dior fashioned a dress with the same yellow, styled like a tutu of tulle fabric with touches of bright red above the waist and multicolored flowers that seem to grow out of the skirt. This garment, designed by John Galliano, was named “Margot” in honor of Margot Fonteyn, the prima ballerina with whom Rudolf Nureyev partnered for many years. In “The Ball,” people danced while chandeliers glittered above. In response, the House of Dior produced “Soiree brillante,” a gown in gray tulle embroidered with silver threads and sequins. “The Millinery” captures a woman admiring a large picture hat, an image that led Dior to design his 1948 collection with similar widebrimmed hats. Dior translated Claude Monet’s “The Artist’s Garden at Giverny” with its diagonal swath of purple irises in areas of shade

and sun into a dress covered with purple and touches of green and adorned with chiffon petals. Monet also loved to paint water scenes, an interest that began in the years he stayed with his aunt in Le Havre on the estuary of the Seine River. The billowing fabric in Monet’s “Women in the Garden” fascinated Dior and may have led, in part, to his 1947 “New Look.” This innovative style also celebrated the end of the restrictions imposed during World War II. Dior used fabric as generously as Monet painted it -- gathered in at the waist then flared to below the calf to give an innovative silhouette. Berthe Morisot’s “Tulips” motivated the curved form of the flower for the silhouette of several dresses with flowing pink and green tulip-shaped fabric pieces attached to a black organza garment. Years earlier Dior had interpreted pointillist Georges Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of la Grande Jatte” with bustles on the back of gowns, and the fabric of Marion Cotillard’s spectacular gown worn in 2008 was covered in pointillist dots. More recently, designer Raf Simon’s www.PanacheVue.com
2012 collection evoked the pointillism of Seurat and Paul Signac. In Simons’ 2013, collection, more than one evening garment showcased ideas from Monet’s brilliant red poppies. Other memorable evening gowns were embroidered with chiffon petals in designs and colors from Renoir’s palette. Renoir’s vase with blowsy pink roses was translated for the collection into a dress with three massive pink organdie roses at the waist. And from Camille Pissarro’s white blossoms on trees Dior borrowed the sublime beauty of white floral patterns. Through the years, the designs and aesthetic qualities that originated with the Impressionists fed Dior’s vision, which grew into a popular cultural phenomenon seen around the world when stars such as Grace Kelly wore his creations. As Princess Grace, she was photographed in 1956 in Bal de Printemps, a coat covered in multicolored embroidered flowers. Five years later, Elizabeth Taylor accepted an Academy Award in Marc Bohan’s white gown with embroidered green flowers flowing down one side. Henri Toulouse-Lautrec’s
famous images and the luminescent quality of the palette seen in his bar scenes may have inspired “Absinthe,” the eye-popping yellow gown that Nicole Kidman wore at the 1996 Oscars.

Q: We are redoing our Great Room and thinking of putting a flat-screen TV over the fireplace. Since we’ll mainly be looking in that one direction, it seems logical to arrange all the seats to face the fireplace, but 34

I don’t want the room to look like a movie theater. What kind of furniture do you recommend? There are five in our family and always the kids’ friends, too. A: Viva the sectional! Seating that comes with built-in flexibility will be your best bet. You can just keep adding sections until you have space enough for everybody. Allow a few independent chairs, too, so when more friends arrive -- or you prefer conversation to TV -- everyone can easily pull into the grouping. Sectionals lend themselves to cohesive arrangements, carving out a visual roomwithin-a-room, especially when they’re underscored by an area rug. Note how neatly

No matter where a person sits along the length of the piece, it’s an easy reach to put down a drink, a dish or book on the low table or its matching end table. Another plus: Because sectionals are open-ended -- this one includes a chaise longue on one end -- they attract more sitters than ordinary three-cushion sofas, in the middle seat of which nobody likes to sit. People would rather perch on the arms or back of an old-fashioned sofa than land in the center seat. Study the crowd at the next party you attend and you’ll see what I mean. Sitting between two people on a regular sofa can make you feel you’re watching a tennis match ... left, right, left ... Q: Remember melamine? A: Shatterproof, light-weight, dishwasher-safe and colorful in the dull days of the l950s, melamine dinnerware quickly became the housewives’ joy, a trendy presence on dining tables all over the country -- and a double Good Design Award winner from the Museum of Modern Art. Then came the Country Look in the l970s and collective craving for the handcrafted, hand-painted and charmingly imperfect. Sleek and smooth as an egg, melamine crept to the back of the cabinet -- until this year. It’s the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the nation’s first melamine dinnerware for domestic use, and -- no surprise in a nation given to nostalgia -- it’s back, big-time. “Residential,” the collection designed in l953 by pioneer industrial designer Russel Wright, has been reproduced and reintroduced in the original shapes and colors: lemon, aqua, black and bone. Not only can you have the real thing again, you can visit its very source: Manitoga, the home and woodland gardens where Wright lived and worked, is now welcoming visitors in Garrison, N.Y. It’s the only modern home open to the public in the entire state. Built on the rock ledge of an abandoned quarry, the 75-acre site is both a National Historic Landmark and a National Trust for Historic Preservation Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios Site. I
often hear in my travels that Luxury consumers are not green. I am not insinuating that many of us are Black Belt Green enthusiasts ourselves, but it seems that the world of Luxury, the products of Luxury, even the word Luxury is a target for mass amounts of scrutiny. In my Countertop business I constantly have to educate consumers on the fact that most green products cost more than virgin products. I think it has to do with the lame green marketing tactics we often hear. They really do not explain much to consumers, I always say. Go to an office supply store and you will notice that Recycled paper cost more than virgin paper. My recycled glass countertops are up there with my other premium materials I offer. They need to be picked up from curbside recycling companies, sorted, cleaned, sanitized, and then polished into a sparkling slab of sheer elegance. The slab then needs highly skilled craftsmanship. Now doesn’t that sound similar to the sounds of craftsman building quality unique woodwork for

a Luxury Yacht? These people that drive these yachts around Florida seem to be the target for annoying negative comments by Uneducated green groups. They seem to be accused of an attitude that does not care for gas consumption or the environment. That is an attitude that needs to stop, these yachts are built to last, remember Green products should be better products. Luxury products are also better products; better products mean they last longer which is truly sustainable and has less impact on our environment. So I think when I see a Rolls Royce driving down the road which is rare in my case, I mainly see all the cheaper gas saving cars around. I see more normal, average smaller cars at gas stations than Luxury cars. My point is per capita, Tampa Bay and Florida if not the world, Luxury products, cars, yachts, and luxury planes are no way affecting our planet, our Florida waters a fraction of what the Mass Production Non-luxury products are doing. Please think about that for a moment. Luxury Consumers are smart, they buy products that make a statement because they are rare, they are unique, they are luxurious and make people smile, they are crafted by the highest skilled workers, and they represent beauty, style and class. Cheap products really cost you more in the long run due to poor quality and re-
placement, not too mention all the time and travel spent re-making or re-buying that cheap product you saved a buck on. Many think we went through a depression; maybe it would be better if we call it a Correction. The luxury market will come back to where it belongs. The buzzwords Luxury and Green blend well, they shouldn’t be fighting one another. Whether you agree or not, both of these words sell high quality, creative craftsmanship; whether it be a Diamond or a countertop, these durable rare objects express an image of good classy taste of elegance. Let’s get the word Luxury back to where it belongs and smile and wave at those people who buy luxury products here in Tampa Bay. T
he 50th annual Art Harvest will take place on Saturday and Sunday, November 2 & 3 at Highlander Park in Dunedin. Art Harvest is a fine art festival featuring over 200 artists from around the country, produced by the Junior League of ClearwaterDunedin, Inc. This year’s Featured Artist is Cheryll Grogan. She creates original paintings and giclee reproductions, making her art affordable for everyone. She was a letter carrier for 17 years working for the U.S.P.S. She painted murals and had her work in various galleries throughout Pinellas County on the side, before she finally decided to be a full time artist. Her parents were both artistic and encouraged her to pursue her passion. She majored in art throughout school in Massachusetts and after 4 years in the army finished her bachelor degree in fine art at University of South Florida in Tampa. Rusty cars, peeling paint and old porches are some of her subject matter. Finding the beauty through study and photography she has combined her passion of travel, painting and photography to create beautiful scenes that a lot of people overlook. Her work has been purchased by folks all over the country as well as Europe. Cheryll has created a piece specifically for Art Harvest to celebrate its milestone anniversary. arge bait schools take up residence along our beaches… from right on the sand on out…and predators galore are there to feast on this opportunity. Around the beginning of September, birds can be seen diving immediately outside of any major pass. Underneath them, schools or ladyfish, small jack crevalle and mackerel are wreaking havoc on panicked pilchards and threadfin herring. The near shore feeding frenzy has begun and it will only get better. Moving forward towards October, the mackerel will grow in size and number. Waves on Bonita in the 5 – 10 lbs range will push walls of water in front of them while crashing these bait schools. Next, predators that can eat all of the above, such as kingfish, barracuda and blacktip sharks will be attracted to the melee and will join the list of possible angling targets, creating a perfect storm of rod bending activity for light tackle fishermen. Trolling is a popular and effective technique for catching fish during this fall time frame as any flashy spoon or minnow imitating plug with result in hook ups. The most exciting approach, however, is to go light tackle. Medium action, 7.5 foot spinning rods equipped with 10 lbs test will handle large mackerel and Bonita, as well as smaller kingfish. Seven foot, heavy action spinning rods, with 20 lbs test, will provide great sport on the larger kings, as well as the stray barracuda or cobia that might show up. As just about everything out here has teeth, all spinning rods should have steel leaders (40 lbs test) on the business end. For the 50 – 100 lbs sharks that are common at this time of year, bring a conven-

This equipment won’t handle the occasional large shark that might be encountered, but will provide great sport for the many medium sized sharks that are usually present. The key to this light tackle fishing experience is getting fish around the boat. This is best accomplished by leaving the

dock with several chums bags and as much whitebait as the bait well will hold. Boats with well aerated, 40 – 50 gallon, oval bait wells are capable of holding in excess of 1500 medium whitebaits. With the great abundance of bait, stuffing a bait well is often not that difficult a task. Near shore swash channels often provide a “one and done” opportunity...meaning that bait is so thick that one throw provides all of the days ammunition. Bait can be seen in the shallow, clear water on the beach as long as winds don’t have the waters churned up. The person in charge of securing this bait should carefully evaluate the size of the bait being thrown upon. Early in the fall, this
bait can be small and can choke a cast net… resulting in lots of dead baits and a 10 – 15 minute clean up removing gilled baits. With bait secured, simply run several miles off the beach, locate over a good area of hard bottom or in an area where lots of bait is seen, and drop anchor. Deploy the chum bag, bait up a few rods with pilchards with no weight (free line), and send them out. Next, begin distributing the live whitebait. If the boat is positioned anywhere near feeding fish, rods should be bending within 15 minutes. Mackerel are usually the first to show but sometimes, the first bite is a drag screaming run from a fish of much bigger proportions. On some days, fish will come on go through the chum slick, providing intermittent activity. On others, several moves may be required to find an active area, but on most, fish will come into the slick and the fishing will just get better and better…and with that much food in the water, there’s no telling what might show up.
