Dear Panaga School Community,

Term 3 has started with a lot of energy and excitement, as always, with the past few weeks including various entry and exit points. Entry points build a sense of anticipation and interest for the start of new learning topics. Exit points come towards the end of a study focus, with learning experiences and activities that bring together and conclude the learning that has taken place. Community engagement supports learning at Panaga School. Often parents are invited into school to engage with learning and learning experiences will go beyond the classroom.

Beyond our usual timetable, last week was our anticipated Book Week. The enthusiasm of our learners suggested that a lot of inspiration was drawn from the various learning experiences held throughout the week.

Panaga School Biweekly (PSB) offers an opportunity to celebrate our innovative learning with our wider community.This week’s edition of PSB is no exception, providing our readers with examples of entry points, exit points and exciting learning topics that are making a positive impact in the lives of others beyond the classroom. You will also find in this week’s edition of PSB a lot of photos that celebrate Book Week.

At this time of year, the forecast of student and class numbers begin in readiness for the new academic year. Your assistance with this matter is appreciated. If you are on final departure from Panaga in the near future, please contact a member of our administration or senior leadership team to begin student offboarding procedures, in support of your relocation.

Our final school disco for students from Nursery to M2 will take place on Thursday 25th May

Pre-Nursery were fully involved in Book Week. We dressed up as book characters, shared books with each other and went on a tour of the school to look at decorated doors. At assembly we modelled our costumes. During the week we had many special visitors. P4 also visited and read us bedtime stories.

What a marvellous Book Week! The Nursery children enjoyed a trip out to the theatre to see the pantomime and went on a door hunt and found lots of amazing stories. P4 children visited us during the week and read us bedtime stories. We even had a special visit from a Super Storyteller, Mr Kane as well as some mini-mystery readers!

Our week started with a Pantomime Show, where we got the gift of stories! Next, we spent an afternoon making our door posters based on popular books. Then off we went, to look at all the other doors. We also listened to stories from the P5s, whilst eating yummy cookies. On Wednesday, we came to school in Pajamas for bedtime stories! Finally, we had a Costume Parade where we got to dress up as a book character or a word. This week, we were totally BOOKED!

We had an exciting book week in P2! We watched a pantomime, shared bedtime stories with P6 and went around Rampayoh to guess the book with the ‘book door challenge’.

We visited P4 onTeraja and completed the door challenge around the school together. So many doors decorated as so many books! We needed to use our personal quality of enquiry!

Book Week kicked off with an exciting trip to the pantomime! Our children loved heckling the characters and watching fairytale characters come to life!

Bedtime Stories

We were delighted to host P7 for ‘bedtime stories’.The P7s brough their favourite stories which they had prepared with props and questions and even certificates awarded for great listening. We loved sharing these stories together.

During Book Week, P4 visited the children in Mendaram to read stories with them. We looked at all of the amazing doors and tried to work out the titles with P3. Our costumes were amazing!

During Book Week, P5 shared lots of books when they visited P1.

After watching the fantastic pantomime P5 got into role and hot-seated famous book characters.

They were book detectives and worked out which books had been recreated on the amazing door!

Each child created their own book inspired byAaron Becker’s trilogy of books.

Book reviews

Books, books, such a lot of books! P6 had a fabulous Book Week creating and sharing Reader’s Theatres with the P2, writing reviews about favourite books, making new book covers and sharing book reviews with our peers. We all enjoyed the door challenge and dressing up for the book parade, trying to guess characters and authors.

During the week the children completed a variety of class

Once Upon a Time

Last week we received a curious package from Farmer Giles, containing some mysterious seeds.

We instantly got to work, collected soil and planted our seeds, cooperating all the way.

We used our phonics knowledge to record our wishes about what the seeds might grow into.

Once Upon a Time

Imagine our surprise when we came to school the next day and discovered an enormous turnip.

We shared our ideas of what to do, then we all worked together to pick the enormous turnip. We heaved and we pulled and we tugged. Eventually the turnip flew out of the ground and landed with a thud!

We wonder what the rest of our seeds will grow into?

AVisit from The Mighty Freeze!

What an exciting morning for the Mendaram children who were paid a visit by the villainous Mighty Freeze! He stole a special box left by a friendlysuperhero.Thechildren followedtheicytrailtofindthe box which meant they could thenmaketheirownsuperhero costumes using their super skills!

P5 - Vanishing Rainforest Entry Point

P5 took part in a range of activities linked to the Rainforest during their recent entry point. Thank you Ms Steph for leading this session. Everyone had a great time and are now inspired to learn more about the importance of our rainforests.

Star jumps while counting backwards

Teraja and Melilas Chess Competition

During last half-term, 112 children from Teraja and Melilas participated in a chess competition at lunchtimes.After lots of exciting and mentally demanding games, each year group had their own chess champion, all of whom received a trophy for their efforts. The six year-group champions then played against each other to determine the school champion.

The school chess final was held in the Teraja Hall on Wednesday, 22nd March and involved Branton (P5) and Edward (M1). Over 100 children came to the hall to watch the final and they were able to watch the game as the moves were projected onto a screen. At the end of a hard-fought and competitive match, Edward won the game and is this year’s school champion.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the children who took part in the competition and the adults who helped out as well. I was very impressed by the high standard of play and the excellent level of sportsmanship throughout the competition. If you would like your child to learn how to play chess, we have a regular chess club at school on Thursday afternoons. If you would like to volunteer to help out at the school’s chess club or if you have any suggestions regarding how to further develop chess at our school, please email me and we could discuss your ideas

The new Eco-Schools ASA group carried out a survey of lights left on and have created posters to encourage people to turn lights off when not in use. They will do another survey later this term to measure the impact of their work.

58% of lights surveyed were left on during ASAs on 20th April 2023.

63% of Teraja and Melilas rooms had lights left on with nobody in the room.

90% of Teraja and Melilas rooms had more lights turned on than people present.

62 people were present in the 30 classrooms surveyed in April, yet a total of 187 lights were switched on.

3 lights were left on for each person present in the Teraja and Melilas classrooms.

CPD session with the Language Leaders - 17th March

On the 17th March, Bruneian teachers signed up for the session ‘How to implement the Language Leaders Programme into your school’. We asked some Language Leaders from M1 and M2 to help with delivering the session. Each student took part in the session, from showing a lesson they had taught to English games teachers could implement into their English lessons.At the end, there was a Q&Asession with the students.The students were very professional and polite.They truly did Panaga School proud.They were great in explaining about the programme and how the programme has helped them as a student.

The week of the 13th March was an extremely busy week for the Language Leaders. For most of them, it was their second teaching experience.After they taught P2 and P3, many of them commented on how easy it was to teach P2 and P3.This time they were asked to teach inTeraja, from P4 all the way to P7. For P4 and P5, the students had to teach colours in Mandarin or French. For P6 and P7 classes, the students were asked to teach Miss Steph’s normal French class.They were told to teach regular adjective endings in the singular and plural form.This topic is quite complicated.They were provided with the lesson material for guidance.The students also had a very short time to prepare for their lessons, unlike the last time where they a nearly two months.Afurther challenge was that they could not choose who they wanted to work with.Although there were nerves at the start of the lessons, once they got started the nerves disappeared.The students were great and some lessons were graded as ‘OUTSTANDING’.Approximately, 85% of the students learned the vocabulary/grammar taught by the Language Leaders. We are extremely proud of their achievements. It is a first in the five years that this programme is running that the students taught two lessons in one academic year as well as taughtTeraja students.

M1 pupils have been finishing the chemistry topic ‘Chemical Reactions’. Including investigations into the conservation of mass during chemical reactions and thermal decomposition.

M1 have started a new physics topic about ‘Light’. They have been studying the law of reflection and will go onto the law of refraction next week.

M2 continued learning about ecosystems.

MELILAS

M2Ahave been exploring the stability of a kelp forest ecosystem below the water.

M2B have also been carrying out ecological random sampling of ecosystems on land.

M2Aused quadrats to estimate the area of the World map which represents land under the tented area. They now know the importance of sample size.

Melilas Tree Project

The monkey cage we built a few weeks ago has worked!The monkeys have kept away from our seeds and they have started to grow!This week, we carried out some maintenance to the tree nursery, solved the problem of water being collected and planted more seeds.
