Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, International Primary Curriculum (IPC) - International Recognition A main priority of our 2018-2019 School Strategic Plan is to review the IPC in line with current research and best practices in teaching and learning. PreNursery and Nursery have also introduced the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC). Recently, the work of Panaga School teachers and students has been recognised internationally through IPC social media channels, as well as an international conference. P4 students, during their recent studies of Being Human, were captured using Merge Cubes. These cubes bring to life visual imagery that is both educational and engaging, by detecting a range of codes. This learning experience was shared through IPC’s social media pages, recognising Mr Steven’s teaching and learning initiative.
cindybintahal@panagaschool.com In addition, Miss Rachel (P2) and Miss Shelagh (Pre-Nursery) have been selected to present at the 2019 Festival of Learning in Singapore, later this term. They will be sharing best practice of IPC and IEYC, as chosen by the Panaga School Senior conference organisers based out of Fieldwork Education in London.

Parent Teacher Consultations and School Reporting Thank you to parents for the important partnerships we share in teaching and learning. Parent Teacher Consultations have taken place formally across Term 1, as students settled in at the beginning of the term, and at the end of the term, in line with Term 1 School Report distribution. Feedback about the new format of Term 1 School Reports to date has been positive from teachers and the Term 1 Panaga School Weekly distributed Parent Survey. Further parent input will be requested at our next Parent Representative Meeting, which will be scheduled as soon as Mr Mark, our new Head Teacher, is able to join us. At the end of Term 2, parents will be issued with the same format of school reports for P1 to M2. Pre-Nursery and Nursery will not produce a Term 2 report. Reporting to parents will be conducted through Tapestry this term, and in the last term, an end of year full report.
Parent Teacher Consultations are available to parents at anytime. Given the varying learning needs of our students, some parents have already spent significant time in regular communication through meetings with teachers. For this reason, Term 2 Parent Teacher Consultations will be optional, with parents invited to make an appointment if you would like to discuss your cindybintahal@panagaschool.com child’s learning or report.

Parents are reminded that many of the public holidays are subject to change.
Cycle Safety Adults are thanked for wearing helmets to promote cycle safety and model this safe behaviour to children.
Panaga School Weekly editor: The Mendaram and Rampayoh shared pedestrian roadway that runs beside Damian Brady
damianbrady@panagaschool.com Pre-Nursery can become rather congested. Adults are asked to walk bicycles in this area and remind children to do the same. Please park bicycles away from the front foyer, as this poses a real danger of bicycles falling on children. Your assistance in promoting safe arrivals and departure to school through cycling safely is appreciated. Regards, Cindy

G’day from Globetrotters ASA At Globetrotters ASA this week, we ‘visited’ Australia, to help them celebrate Australia Day (Sunday 26th January). We listened to traditional Australian music, greatly enjoying the sounds of the didgeridoo! We also heard some Australian folk tales, and found out about some Australian animals, including the wombat.

International Schools Assessment (ISA) Meeting ISA is an external assessment programme, used in all Shell Schools, which compares us to other schools around the world. ISA is taken by students from P5 upwards, so all students from P5-M2 will be sitting the tests. ISAs will take place the week beginning 11th February. To help parents that are new to ISAs to understand the process, we will be hosting a 'New to ISA' Parent Meeting on Wednesday 30th January, at 5pm in the Teraja Hall. (This information has already been added to the School Calendar.) Parents of children that have not been part of the ISA process in previous years are invited to attend. Please complete this form if you are attending the meeting. - Perminder Sanghera, Deputy Head Teacher, Teraja and Melilas
Sad mathematical times for last week’s puzzle. There were some excellent efforts made to count the number of numbers between 100 and 999 that contained 1, 2 or 3 of the digit 7. Unfortunately, no one managed to get the correct answer to our most challenging puzzle yet. Is there anyone out there who can achieve the glory?

Nursery’s Camping Adventure! What an amazing jungle adventure we had yesterday in Nursery! The children inspired us to have a camping morning and it evolved from there with lots of ideas from the children themselves. We had great fun putting up tents, collecting sticks for the ‘campfire’, which we sang around, told stories and ‘toasted’ marshmallows. The children created art from natural materials including clay animals and stick people. We played games and had many conversations with our friends about the jungle. The learning fun continues with our jungle dance with Pre-Nursery and Middle Years. Many thanks to all parents for your continued support with our learning initiatives.

P1’s Beach Trip
What a fantastic morning we had on the beach! The children had fun digging, building sandcastles, writing their names, playing and sharing time with their parents and friends. The parents were kept busy by running backwards and forwards with buckets of water. A huge “thank you” to everyone who helped. This trip has really inspired the children’s imaginative play and artwork since returning to school. By the P1 team

Boots for Brunei - a success!
Last Saturday, a number of teachers from P5 visited Pengiran Setia Jaya Pengiran Mohd Yusof Primary School (SR PSJ PMY) in Seria. This visit was to deliver the football boots and shin pads donated as part of the Boots for Brunei campaign. The children and staff in the school were very excited to receive them and it is hoped that we will see a team from the school being represented at the Panaga Football Tournament, taking place in February. Thank you to all of you who contributed to this campaign.
P5 are hoping to consolidate the links with SR PSJ PMY even further by doing a book drive to supply the school with reading books. If you have any old books that you would like to donate to this, there is a basket in the Teraja main building entrance.

Design & Technology P6 Eco Garden - IPC unit: Fruits, Shoots & Roots P6 are learning how to rethink and reuse scrap materials around them to solve real life problems. They are re-designing the fencing for the Eco-Garden in front of Teraja library.
Panaga School Weekly, Issue Thirteen, 25th January 2019 Their solution involves rethinking about how to reuse old DVDs and plastic bags, with an innovative weaving idea being trialed in the photos shown. Students worked with great care to create a weaving loom from donated DVDs. They then cut thin strips of plastic bag, and used these to build-up their unique multicoloured weaving designs. When finished, these will be joined together to form a sturdy fence to protect the Eco-Garden. Why not try this at home?

Teraja has a new prospective feathered student We are very excited to have a regular visitor to the hornbill box. This is a male hornbill checking out a prospective nest. Even though he is visiting the box, it does not mean he will nest there. We are crossing our fingers that he will nest there with his mate as it would be great to observe the birds during the nesting period. Oriental pied hornbills normally commence breeding in the wet season. The wet season provides a lot of fruit for the birds. They select the nest based on availability and type of fruit trees nearby. If the female selects this nest, she will enter the nest and together with her mate they will seal their nest. They seal the nest with a mixture of saliva, mud, fruit, droppings and tree bark, leaving only a small opening through which the male passes the food. The male is responsible for foraging for food. He will pass the food to the female through the tiny opening and the female will feed the chicks. The chicks remain inside the nest with the female for several months until they are ready to fledge. It is quite possible they will return the year after to the same nest.
Interesting facts about hornbills: * The male hornbill has a larger casque with a few black marks, while the female has a smaller casque with more black marks. Also, the male is slightly bigger. * Oriental pied hornbills are monogamous birds, meaning they mate for life. * They are frugivores, meaning their diet mainly consists of fruit such as figs, rambutans, palm fruit, papaya, etc. * However, they will also eat large insects, small birds, small reptiles and amphibians. Their diet differs slightly between the breeding and non-breeding season. * There are eight different species of hornbills in Brunei.
