Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Performance Week Miss Sam (pictured centre), Miss Sarah (pictured right) and Miss Melissa (pictured left) have just concluded an entire week of evening theatre performances across Teraja and Melilas. These performances ranged from fun and energetic themed plays, through to sophisticated and mature theatre pieces. I felt that I had been swept away to a theatre company, with all of the acting, singing and dance elements coming together to provide audiences with pure entertainment, while our students had the opportunity to showcase their learning through Performing Arts. Acknowledgement and thanks to our dynamic Performing Arts trio! Brownies’ Bake Sale Sticking to a calories target was a difficult job this week with the Brownies’ Bake Sale in the Panaga foyers. Panaga School operates as a hub within the community. After hours Rainbows, Brownies and Scouts sessions are conducted on site, with many of our students benefiting. The Brownies were delighted with their fundraising efforts, just as passersby were delighted with their purchases. Funds raised will go towards purchasing resources for some of their projects.

Reef Check are a Bruneian NGO (non-governmental organisation) who are concerned with the conservation of coral reefs. This week, Baz and Emily came to visit the Nursery children, who have already been learning about looking after the oceans and keeping the beaches clean. They explained to them what a coral reef is, which animals are friends of the coral and how to protect the reefs. The children also made their own piece of coral using junk. This was a great way for the children to make connections in their learning and also to add new knowledge.

P1

On Friday 8th March, P1 were lucky enough to visit Anduki Airfield. The children were very excited to be going on their first School Bus trip. The children had a wonderful time looking at the helicopters, trying the equipment and even going inside the big rescue helicopter. They learnt about the different parts of the helicopter and the different roles and jobs of the people on board. We were even lucky enough to see a helicopter land. A huge “thank you to the all the staff at Anduki and to all the parent helpers who joined us. What a great time! By the P1 team

P3’s visit to Teraja

On Tuesday 12th March, P3 took a walk over to Teraja to watch the P5 and P6 performance. Afterwards, we stayed to eat our snack on the P4 benches, and then to join the Teraja children for playtime. It was a great opportunity to start becoming familiar with the children, the teachers and the site at Teraja, ready for September when many of our P3s will be moving into P4. The P3 children really enjoyed this experience, and behaved with such maturity and good sense that they fit in perfectly with the older children. By the P3 team

IPC - Rampayoh: Research and record We went on a communication walk around the local area to research how/what signs are communicating.

P3

P2

We researched a few different types of axles to see which would be most effective for our moving cars and tested them out.

We built pom-pom catapults to investigate forces and recorded some short video clips giving tips on how to get our catapult to shoot the furthest.

By Miss Maura and Miss Miriam, IPC Leaders for Learning

We then recorded this information back in the classroom by making 3D model maps.

Look at all the different ways we can record our learning.

P1

We attached airplanes to balloons to research how escaping air can push something forward.

On Monday 11th March, students from P6 and P7 were visited by 19 adult learners from Pusat Bahagia, KB. Panaga students have been learning the skill of card making as part of their ASA this term and shared their new knowledge with our visitors. The afternoon was a valuable learning experience for both the adults from Pusat Bahagia and our students, as well as a fantastic opportunity to show our Personal Goals in action. All of the adults involved were so impressed with the kind and caring attitude of all the students involved; they were model examples of students at Panaga.

Students used their extended exam time to demonstrate their painting skills.

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Twenty, 15th March 2019

Students have worked hard this term, experiencing many new types of drawing and painting media. The Art exam provided the time they needed to really show what they could do. They applied a coloured ground, and then layered the paint carefully to achieve accurate skin tones and colour matches, with very pleasing results. See the finished paintings in next week’s issue :)

Panaga School, Brunei Shell Petroleum, Bilingual Emergency Phone Numbers Graphic Design Magnet Competition Schools across the nation are invited to take part in the country’s first-ever Bilingual Emergency Phone Numbers Graphic Design Magnet Competition, organised by Panaga School’s Digital Education Specialist Teachers, Damian Brady and Neil Lynch; funded by Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP). Details below:

The winner will have the unique opportunity of being awarded as the sole designer of what will be a thousand bilingual magnets produced and distributed to Bruneian schools, government departments and businesses, thanks again to BSP funding. It is scary how few people know all four of Brunei’s Emergency Services’ phone numbers. What an opportunity for children and their parents and teachers to not only learn all four emergency phone numbers, but to know them in both languages from designing a poster. The competition encourages the following important message to students: “By entering…you could help save a life.” We implore all Panaga School students to enter. Entries close Friday 12th April. The winner will be announced and magnets will be ready for distribution in July. School students of all ages are invited to send their entries to: emergencymagnetcompetition@panagaschool.net.
