Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Welcome back to Term 3 and welcome to many new joiners who are working through their onboarding processes currently. Residentials Next week, Panaga School will be noticeably quieter as our P6, P7 and M1 students all spend a week away in Kota Kinabalu, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore respectively. Our P5 students have just finished their Survival experience, based at school, with the kind assistance and leadership of the Garrison. Residentials are an integrated part of the curriculum, providing hands on and character building learning experiences. We wish our P6, P7 and M1 students and staff a safe and enjoyable Residential experience.
Teraja’s new playgrounds This week, students have welcomed the addition of 2 new playgrounds in Teraja, with thanks to Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) leadership. In addition to lunch times, supervision of students on playgrounds takes place Principal: from 7.15am each morning, with staff on duty. Before this time and after Cindy Bin Tahal school, if students are using playgrounds, it is with the direct supervision of (+673) 3372355/8777028 their guardian. In the event that children are observed by staff as either email: cindybintahal@panagaschool.com unsupervised or alone outside of these hours, they will be directed away from the playgrounds.

No school Swimming lessons from 29th April to 3rd May There will be no school Swimming lessons the week beginning Monday 29th April as our Swimming coaches will be undertaking their annual training. Fire drills this week On Tuesday 9th April, fire drills were conducted right across Panaga School. The drills were partially announced via an email message 12 hours prior, therefore, it was intended that the community, students and not all staff were aware they would take place. Contractors responsible for fire alarm panels were on site with our school civil foreman on hand to monitor the effectiveness of the alarm system. I am pleased to report that both Mendaram and Rampayoh, as well as Teraja and Melilas sites were evacuated, swept and had all people accounted for in less than 3 minutes. Improvements to the fire alarm system were noticeable, with further improvements being conducted prior to our next drill, which will be completely unannounced, during Term 3.2.

Ramadan damianbrady@panagaschool.com With the Holy Month of Ramadan set to begin in early May, I ask parents of children who will be fasting to please inform class teachers as soon as possible. Such information is crucial for us to work through school operations at this time of year. Considerations include how long children will fast for, what component of the curriculum they will participate in and what time of the school day they wish to finish. School will operate our usual hours throughout Ramadan, with our Muslim staff members able to modify their hours in line with company arrangements, as well as rest areas being established in consideration of fasting staff and students. Regards, Cindy

During the last two weeks of Term 2, Rampayoh celebrated all things poetry! We shared a variety poems in class and we were very lucky to be visited by different members of the community who shared poems with us. Thank you to all that supported. Our poetry celebrations culminated in a Poetry Challenge Day! The day started with some inspirational performances from some very brave P3 students and then we went into our house colour teams to learn a poem to perform. At the end of the morning, each team performed their chosen poem with great enthusiasm and confidence. What a super way to end our poetry celebrations!

In Teraja and Melilas, we celebrated Poetry Week too with two weeks of activities, culminating in a House Challenge Day on the last day of term. The pupils, teachers and some members of the community enjoyed releasing their creativity and some wonderful examples of writing, art and performance were produced!
M1 and M2 students explored how to express poetry through Art.
Pupils from P4J worked very hard to memorise their poems for the House Challenge Day, while also thinking of how to creatively perform them.

P5 pupils learned how to describe with Kennings. They created brilliant descriptions for the school’s 70th anniversary mural.
P7 pupils worked with a parent on acrostic poems.

P4-P7 children were put into teams and worked hard for a chance to compete for their House in the assembly.
Each year group showcased a performance from each house and a few M1 and M2 children also performed in the assembly. The performances were brilliant and showed a lot of effort and talent. A huge well done to everyone involved and thank you to parents and teachers for supporting Poetry Week!

P3 explore the world in their IPC ‘Holidays’ Entry Point On Tuesday morning, the P3 children kickstarted their new IPC unit of learning, ‘Holidays’. After arriving at school, we received passports and boarding passes and queued up for security checks and immigration. We watched an inflight safety video in the lounge before boarding Panaga Airlines for a round the world flight captained by our very own Mr Damian. We visited four continents and created some art inspired by Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania. By the P3 Team

During this first week back after the holidays in DE, Middle Years have been thinking about online gaming. Is the game suitable? What is the age rating? Why does it have that age rating? Who are you playing that game with? At Panaga School, we do our best to educate students that young people should be on their guard, not just for themselves but for other children. The online gaming world is a difficult place for parents to monitor, so the ability to spot something that doesn’t feel right is a life skill that we try our best to develop in our students.
Opening files, accepting emails, instant messages, pictures or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems - they may contain viruses or nasty messages. Tell your parents or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied. Someone online might lie about who they are and information on the internet may not be true. Always check information with other websites, books or someone who knows. If you like chatting online, it’s best to only chat to your real friends and family. Meeting in person someone you have only met online can be dangerous. Remember, online friends are still strangers even if you have been talking to them for a long time. Never meet up with them alone and always speak to a parent or carer beforehand. Keep safe by being careful not to give your personal information when you are chatting or posting online. Personal information includes your email address, phone number, password and location.
