Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Farewell Miss Irene Miss Irene has served as a school cleaner at Panaga School for 25 years. During this time, she has worked on all school sites and paid witness to the constantly evolving expatriate staff and students who make up Panaga School. Miss Irene is a dearly loved and respected member of staff. Her attention to detail and commitment to providing a clean, safe and respectful learning community is very appreciated. In addition, she presents with endless amounts of joy and enthusiasm for life. A contagious quality, as she finds good in all situations. With next week being Miss Irene’s 60th birthday comes the need for her to retire. Miss Irene has suggested that she is not feeling ready to retire, and as a school community, we are finding it very difficult to farewell her. Last week, Rampayoh staff and students held a farewell assembly for Miss Irene, where she was presented with special messages and gifts. From the bottom of my heart, and from all our hearts, thank you Miss Irene. You are one in a million and will be truly missed! (We do anticipate visits from Miss Irene though, as she will always be part of our Panaga family.) Congratulations to Miss Maura - International Education Consultant Role Miss Maura will soon be providing a week of education consultation and training to another Shell-affiliated international school. This role has evolved through recommendations by Shell Education Services. This is wonderful recognition for Miss Maura, who has more than 20 years of teaching experience. For the past 13 years, Miss Maura has taught and led the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) at Shell schools in Nigeria, Oman and now of course Brunei. During her time leading the IPC in Nigeria and Oman, both schools were accredited at Mastering level - a fantastic achievement. The IPC training that Miss Maura has remained engaged in is significant and beneficial to us all. We are very fortunate to have both Miss Maura and Miss Miriam as our IPC Leaders for Learning at Panaga School.
BSP supports Miss Maura’s engagement, which begins on Friday 26th April. She will return to school on Monday 6th May. Reciprocally, it is acknowledged Panaga School Weekly editor: that Shell Global Education, as well as Panaga School, will benefit from her Damian Brady upcoming work. A unique opportunity too for Miss Maura to further her damianbrady@panagaschool.com leadership skills and experience in an area crucial to Panaga School’s current improvement agenda. Residentials Welcome home to all P6, P7 and M1 students and teachers, returning from your Residentials. We look forward to hearing about all of your many positive experiences. Wishing you all a fabulous weekend. Next week, I will be off to the jungles of Temburong with our M2 students and teachers for their Residential experience. Regards, Cindy

Panaga School Introduction and Safety video for visitors The P3 team, with the capable assistance and participation of several children and key staff members, has produced a brief (2-minute, 26-second) introduction and safety video for the benefit of visitors to the school. This video will go ‘live’ soon, and will be available in each of our three foyer/reception areas: Mendaram, Rampayoh and Teraja. The target group for this video includes contract-worker personnel, in addition to all other visitors. It follows along the same lines as the introduction/safety video for all newcomers to BSP HQ upon their first visit to that complex.
Once visitors have seen this, they can subsequently come and go as they please, though they will still be asked to sign in, and out. Parents of Panaga School children are exempt. Our trusty security team at each of our three main reception areas will administer the smooth running of this video by asking visitors if they have seen it before. Those who have not will be asked to take just a few minutes of their time to watch it. The information contained in this video addresses some basic but important topics, and asks visitors to take cognisance of these messages:
All visitors to the school are asked to sign in at the security desk. This applies to anybody who is not a parent or guardian of a child in Panaga School. At main pick-up and drop-off times, there is no need to sign in or out.
When on school premises, adults are requested to use adult-designated toilets only.
Parents and guardians are able to take photos of children when celebrating school events.
Please be respectful when sharing other people’s images on social media. We advocate that consent is gained first.
Emergency numbers, evacuation procedures and assembly point maps are clearly displayed at the doorway of each room across Panaga School.
The main foyer of each school site displays all emergency contact numbers.
Contractors or other visitors to the school are not to take photos of children or be with children in the absence of at least one Panaga School staff member.
Coming soon - our new Panaga School Introduction and Safety video!

Eighteen teachers from Seria Mulia School (SMS) visited the Early Years on Thursday 18th May for some professional development from our Mendaram and P1 teachers. SMS teachers spent the morning walking around the environment and observing teachers’ lessons. In the afternoon, teachers were invited to workshops about physical development, communication and language, as well as the enabling environment. They were well received with lots of enthusiasm and questions and we hope, inspiration, to take away with them. Panaga School teachers are looking forward to continuing the partnership with SMS. Thank you to all staff involved in making it such a productive day.

Our new International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) unit of learning in Mendaram is My Toy Shop, and last week we saw the children become toy shop owners and toy makers as part of their Entry Point. Throughout this unit, the children will be exploring the theme of ‘Toys’ and will learn that toys come in many different shapes and sizes.
We will also be teaching the children new games that they can play inside and outside, including some traditional games from different countries. If you have or know a game from your home country that you would be willing to come in and share or teach, please speak to your child’s class teacher. - Mendaram Staff

Potato Heads After playing with the toy and reassembling the face in fun and interesting ways, the children of Pre-Nursery went about making their own Potato Heads. They used their imaginations to creatively combine a variety of materials such as matchsticks and old bottle tops.

P1 Entry Point - Bug Hunt The Children in P1 set off to explore the school for bugs as their Entry Point in their new IEYC unit, “Beautiful Bug Ball. Armed with nets, fabric for catching bugs, magnifiers, containers and lots of enthusiasm, they searched the long grass, vegetable gardens and trees for bugs. They showed great care and respect for the living creatures as they carefully observed and collected the bugs. On return to the classroom, they examined the bugs and looked for them in reference books. This was a wonderful start to their new learning and it has sparked their interest in finding out more about the small animals that we share our school and world with. By the P1 Team

A small, yet formidable group of ASA students who transformed a forgotten piece of land into a stunning Commemorative Garden to mark the 70th Anniversary of Panaga School.
Bougainvillea Beware! With nothing more than a Spade, Fork and Wheelbarrow, the team were quick to get to work clearing the site. Moving plants to new positions around school, and clearing away weeds, old grass and lots and lots of stones, brick and rubble! It really was hard work.
After weeks of digging and clearing, we were ready to plan out the garden. We divided the space into 6 even sections (one for each Year Group from P4 - M2). Then, we ordered new grass and lots of beautiful white and dark grey pebbles to build our new garden.

In just 8 weeks the ‘Gardening Gang’
prepared the garden ready for Gardening Day on the 19th April. Students from Teraja and Melilas planted an array of beautiful plants to bring the space to life. It was a stunning way to commemorate such an important milestone for our school, and a ‘Job Well Done’ by a few very hard working students. The garden was officially opened by Mazlina Maawiah, on 22nd March 2019.

P3 ‘Holidays’ trip to Jerudong Park and UP Climbing! This week, P3 travelled to UP Climbing and Jerudong Park as part of their IPC learning about ‘Holidays’. There was much excitement surrounding the trip and it didn’t disappoint. At Jerudong Park, students and teachers were able to experience mini golf as well as the exciting slides in the waterpark.
At UP Climbing, all students showed resilience as they pushed themselves to climb that little bit higher or to try a trickier route up the wall. It was amazing to watch students encouraging each other. As one student said, ”Can we do it again next week?” By the P3 Team

P4’s trip to the Climbing Wall P4 also had a fantastic time at UP Climbing Centre. Everyone had a go at climbing and demonstrated great resilience and adaptability to find ways up the climbing wall.
Some children even made it to the top of the wall using different routes.

P4’s trip to the Mesozoic Centre As a part of our new IPC unit, ‘Footprints from the Past’, we visited The Mesozoic Centre in Bandar. We saw lots of different dinosaurs and even touched and smelt dinosaur poo (coprolites). We also learnt about continental drift and how the same dinosaurs are found on different continents.
We made our own Mammoth skeleton.
We saw lots of different fossils and dinosaur bones.

P5 SURVIVAL CAMP 10TH-12TH APRIL
Camps are fun. But why are they important? Is there more to them than just silly games and fun? Way more. In a world gone technology crazy, sometimes the great outdoors is just that: great. Last week, the children of P5 experienced first hand how to survive in the jungle. The children rotated around a series of stands to learn how the Ghurkhas survive in the jungle and were able to try lighting a fire, try out memory games, wearing army kit and how to find water, to name a few. Over the next two days the children worked in groups to reach a common goal, involving orienteering, survival swimming, building a shelter, washing plates and cutlery (a favourite for many), tug of war and the Camp concert. It boosted self-esteem through exposing children to skill-based learning that does not happen in the classroom. Children were empowered to take care of themselves and their own belongings, which helps to build independence. Also, it helped to foster an interest in learning and discovery that stretched beyond the classroom. A special thank you to all staff involved and to parents for allowing your children to develop skills that will enable them to be more resilient learners. By the P5 Team
