Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, I suggested to our editor extraordinaire, Mr Damian, that last week’s Panaga School Weekly could be our final edition for Term 1. The passion for and variety of learning that takes place across Panaga School, through our committed and passionate staff, community and students, just would not allow for such a pause in production. In addition, Mr Damian, the backbone of celebrating the greatness that is the Panaga School Community, refused to take a break from the hours of work he offers in his weekly editorial role. “There are just too many wonderful community projects and learning experiences still going on to not offer a final Panaga School Weekly for the term!” was the reply Mr Damian offered to my suggestion. As I flick through the pages of this week’s Panaga School Weekly, I am once again in awe of the community and internationally minded world that we find ourselves in, as members of the Panaga School Community. An international breakfast, parent volunteers right across the school, high quality learning experiences in science, arts, sports and more, as well as cultural celebrations through Christmas related events. We really have it all!
cindybintahal@panagaschool.com In addition, we have included again this week, sign up invitations for Term 2 After School Activities (ASAs). Please see the information provided by Mr Nathan and Miss Melissa. Thursday afternoon ASAs are in addition to the Panaga School Senior multitude of Sports and Performing Arts ASAs held on most other days.

P2 and P3 Enquiry through Science On Friday 7th December, P2 and P3 children had a morning of fun-filled learning on our first-ever Science Challenge Day. Our Personal Goal of Enquiry was central to our learning focused activities.
Children were able to make predictions, test them, and consider how they could impact outcomes. The range of science activities included: engineering a safe ‘eggmobile’, finding magnetic and non-magnetic materials, investigating floating and sinking, properties of materials, static electricity and splitting white light to create rainbows. By the P2 and P3 teaching teams
Designing and building an ‘eggmobile’. How can we keep the egg safe?
Getting ready to test it. Will the egg survive?
Why won’t the dice sink? And why are the liquids separating?
How does static electricity react with paper?
Which objects float and which sink?
Why is it sticking to the balloon?
How can we make sinking objects float?!

Students from P7 to M2 came together in our Textiles ASA, to create reusable drawstring bags from 100% recycled materials. The fabric was sourced from donated clothing and the logos stenciled onto repurposed bed linen. Quality control was tight, but after a whole term’s work, the busy students managed to sew an incredible 40 finished bags. The bags are a great alternative to the plastic fruit and vegetable bags given freely at supermarkets, and are suitable for takeaway food orders. Priced at just $4, they are handy to have with you every day. We hope you will support us by buying yours from the Panaga Club. During Nursery Rhyme Week, PreNursery and Nursery students were involved in a Batik workshop with visiting parents and Miss Josie and Mr Zaim from the Teraja/Melilas Art and Design Technology department. The children were learning the song, "I'm a little tea pot”, for World Nursery Rhyme Week and enjoyed ‘dunking’ their squares of cotton fabric into tea to create a natural background dye. Then, they applied a resistant starch, taking inspiration from the beautiful Indonesian Batiks that had been shown to them by parents earlier that week. The final stage was to add the wonderful indigo blue dye to complete their patches and then ‘pick off’ the dried starch. The patches have been carefully joined together in the Textiles department on Teraja site, to create an exquisite wall hanging to be permanently displayed at Mendaram.

Imagine That! Mendaram Exit Point!
Imagine That! Another exciting, fun and successful morning was had in Mendaram this week to bring our IEYC unit to a close. The children have been learning all about different artists and the techniques that they use. The parents were wowed as they walked through the tranquil gallery of masterpieces from both Pre-Nursery and Nursery children. This was followed by a delicious international breakfast with parents bringing dishes from their home countries. What a great way to end our first term in a truly international style. Four children and their parents visited the Old Peoples Home, with the help of some of last year’s P4 parents. They prepared food for the residents, read to some of them and played games. As you can see from the pictures, a great time has been had by all. Children from all three classes visiting again yesterday to take holiday gifts and food.

P7 GO WITH THE FLOW Written by Tijl and Bryce On Thursday 6th December 2018, the P7 children of Panaga School had their Exit Point for their IPC topic, “Go With The Flow”. The children invited their parents to share their artwork, IPC books and complete a project on one of the IPC-rich questions. In addition, the children of P7 and their parents were asked to make a hydro-powered water wheel, which was able to power an LED light. This was a challenge for many children and parents. Week 3’s puzzle was fiendishly difficult, and there was only one correct answer from all of the entries! Massive congratulations to Saksham in P6MM who provided two ways to consider the problem! In honour of his use of the factorial symbol in his calculation, I have included an exclamation point at the end of each sentence! This week’s puzzle may be more straight forward. Enjoy the break, and keep puzzling, Panaga! - Mr Simon
