Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, As we return to school to begin Term 2, I would like to wish everybody all the very best for 2019. A special warm welcome to our new families who have joined our Panaga School Community this week. The enormity involved in moving countries with your family is acknowledged. We are here to assist you with this process. I trust you are beginning to form support networks as you settle in to your new life. Please do reach out at any time for conversations to assist your child/ren’s school transition. Class teachers are usually your first point of contact. Office administrators and members of the school leadership team are available also. New Head Teacher update This term we will welcome to our school leadership team Mr Mark Walters as Head Teacher, based at the Rampayoh/Mendaram site. Mark worked as Deputy Head of Dean Close Preparatory School, England, up until December 2018. Previous to this, he was a Deputy Head in Dubai, with prior teaching and management positions held in Bahrain and England.

Mark and his family (pictured) are very motivated to relocate to Brunei, with onboarding currently in process. Departing students and reports For those families due to depart Brunei, your support in advising the school office through the completion of a leaver’s form is both required and appreciated. This is particularly crucial at this time of year, as we establish student number and staffing forecasts for next academic year.
damianbrady@panagaschool.com For families who are departing, please ensure teachers are offered a minimum of two weeks’ notice to generate leaving reports, if required. Parents are asked to keep past school reports safe, as there has been an influx of school report requests from previous years. This is not always available and will only be honoured in exceptional circumstances. 2019/2020 Academic Calendar This is due for release by Friday 25th January, following our next School Board meeting. Regards, Cindy

P5 learn how inventions of the past shape our experiences today During the week, children of P5 were involved in a discovery session about technology and the history of inventions, as a part of their IPC Entry Point. The children rotated around a number of activities to promote curiosity about inventions of the past— many of which we take for granted today. What a great way to start our Term 2 learning. P2 Entry Point - Our World P2 started 2019 with the Panaga Natural History Society (PNHS) hosting our IPC Entry Point for the unit, Our World. Miss Steph and Ana Pineda from PNHS facilitated an engaging array of activities, highlighting the biodiversity of the world around us in Brunei. We were able to inspect hornbill feathers and food, learning that hornbills eat fruit, insects and seeds. A range of beachcombing artefacts and reference books were on hand to touch, feel and discover. We saw a horseshoe crab and other shells, large tree seeds and husks, as well as driftwood and rocks. In addition, a range of activities helped children to classify wildlife into groups, sort types of Bruneian animals and understand their habitats. Miss Steph and Miss Ana set a challenge for the children to come back at the end of the unit with lots of new information and understanding to share with them! A great beginning to a unit on our environment and how we can protect it. By the P2 Teaching Team

P3 Exit Point On Tuesday, 8th January 2019, P3 children, parents and teaching staff enjoyed an exciting and hugely entertaining Exit Point in Rampayoh Hall. To celebrate the children’s ‘Things People Do’ learning, we focused on the fact that some people need to wear safety equipment and protective clothing to work safely. We looked at overalls, safety boots, glasses, gloves and other equipment. For our Design Technology project, we had to design a tabard for a teddy bear to wear. Our completed jackets were on display during the latter part of our Exit Point when we presented our teddy safety jackets in our respective classrooms. In the earlier part of our Exit Point, the challenge for our parents was to team up in small groups or work individually with their child to develop a safety jacket (with limited time, materials and equipment available) that could be used for biking safely around Panaga. The results, with evidence to prove this (see pics), were both imaginative and hilarious, especially when we saw our parents and grandparents ‘model’ their respective ‘creations’ on the catwalk, to uproarious applause and laughter. Calvin Klein is on notice!

Panaga School and the Panaga Club will be running our annual Panaga Football Tournament on Sunday 17th February 2019. This is a great sporting event, with an opportunity for our students to compete and have fun with students from other schools. Please complete THIS FORM to register your child if they are interested in participating in the tournament. If you do not wish for your child to participate, it is not necessary for you to submit the form. This event relies upon the support of volunteers from within our community. Volunteers play an integral part on the day by taking on roles which help make the event happen. Please support this event by filling in the last section on this form if you are able to referee. Unfortunately, without enough referees we will not be able to go ahead with the tournament. Alternatively, you may like to be a coach. If you wish for your child to participate in the tournament, and if you can assist too, please complete and submit this form by Monday 14th January.
