Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Another fun-filled week draws to an end at Panaga School. As I write this editorial, children are busy adding their own inspiring and heartfelt messages to each other on the pathways that link the school sites. As encouraged by Miss Cindy, I also ask you to please take some time with others to view the messages the children have written. They once again demonstrate how thoughtful and internationally minded our children are.
Cycling to school and around Panaga Living within Panaga provides us with a safe environment where our children are able to be out and about exploring and learning new things. For a large percentage of our children, travelling around is made easier by our wonderful cycle paths within the community. However, keeping to the paths is only part of ensuring that children and adult are safe when cycling. Over the past few weeks, a number of incidents have occurred where pupils and adults have been observed cycling in a unsafe manner around camp. Children have been spoken to about wearing helmets and not cycling the wrong way along roadways. A number of younger cyclist have been observed cycling on the roadways as opposed to the cycle paths. Please do talk through the safety tips below with your children. Keeping our children safe is so important and ensuring they are aware of simple safety rules can help ensure we all arrive home safely. Bicycle rules Cycling around Panaga means riding alongside cars and other cyclists, so it has its own challenges. The key is to ride safe, which means obeying the rules. Here are 10 important bike safety rules: Always wear a helmet. Stay visible; use bike lights and/or wear bright clothes. Look and signal; use hand signals to let others know where you’re going, try to make eye contact with them and look before you go. Stay alert for obstacles on the road and paths including cars and other vehicles. Ride in the right direction; don’t go opposite to the traffic flow. Be predictable; don’t just weave in and out. Obey all the traffic laws and lights.
Stay on the cycle paths as much as possible. Be aware of others while cycling, especially people walking on the paths. Watch out for the local wildlife.

Together, saving lives‌
Some rather creative and caring P7 children have been putting together a proposal for organising their own charitable event. They want to be able to raise monies ethically and with integrity for charities that are close to their hearts. They have already arranged meetings and have started to write a business plan. They have met with their class teachers, their Principal and will be meeting with a Shell CEA representative within the next few weeks to ensure that their plan has integrity. This is a super effort and shows that they are really putting those Personal Qualities to good use. Look out over the next few weeks for their advertising plan and details of their initiative.
...Together, making a difference

P3s launch of our shared vision and definition of learning P3 children and staff had great fun bringing our shared vision and definition of learning to life. After talking about what the words meant, we put them into action as, ‘Together, we improved learning.” We needed all of our Personal Qualities too as we laughed and learned some new skills together.
“I enjoyed playing rock, paper, scissors, catch. We had to communicate and make a decision as a team.”
“We needed lots of communication and cooperation in order to cross the lava as a team. It was tricky because we didn’t have enough stepping stones!”

Middle Years Digital Education Graphic Design in Photoshop The new year has brought out the creative side of our Middle Years students, learning about what it takes to be a graphic designer. Thinking about colour plates, layout and typography, the art and technique of arranging type to make it readable, and appealing. Photoshop is industry standard software and not easy to master but I’m sure you’ll agree the students have coped admirably. - Mr Neil
