Panaga School Weekly Issue Five 09 November 2018

Updates from the Principal’s Desk Another productive week of learning has taken place at Panaga School, and along the way, we were fortunate enough to celebrate learning with the School Board and Global Shell Representatives also. This week, our newly formed 2018/2019 School Board met for the first time.

Panaga School IFM/4, BSP Company Sdn Bhd, Seria, KB 3534, Negara Brunei Darussalam (+673) 3375728/3372139 (Teraja), (+673) 3372694 (Mendaram/Rampayoh) Principal: Cindy Bin Tahal (+673) 3372355/8777028 email: cindybintahal@panagaschool.com

Members include (above, left to right): Dr Padma Muppidi (BSP Representative) (insert) Farida Talib (BSP/CD and Chair of the School Board) Lee Watts (BSP Representative) Mazlina Maawiah (BSP/IFM) Cindy Bin Tahal (Principal) Henk Van Hout (Head of Shell Education Services, The Hague) Sonja Perry (Parent Representative) Rachel Marsden (Staff Representative) During our first Board Meeting, reflections took place about teaching and learning outcomes from the 2017/2018 academic year, with a presentation of school improvement plans for this school year. Such information promotes the excellent standard of teachers employed at Panaga School. An appreciated sentiment echoed resoundingly by all School Board members.

Panaga School Weekly editor: In addition to our board meeting, Panaga School also had the privilege of Damian Brady hosting Global Shell staff: Henk van Hout (Head of Shell Education Services), damianbrady@panagaschool.com Grzegorz (Greg) Rzeczycks (Assistant Head of Shell Education Services and Education Services Advisor) and Joanna Gornik (Subject Matter Expert, Global Mobility). These members of Global Shell visited Panaga School as a part of a larger itinerary in both Brunei and Asia. During this visit, “Creativity” was discussed in detail as an important term, both in education and the way of the future. Enhancing and encouraging creativity is a way of finding solutions and improvements on so many levels. Melilas teachers and students demonstrated an excellent understanding of this concept, which was quickly captured by Henk, Jo and Greg.

In addition to our already familiar Personal Goals, Melilas have written “Creativity into their goals as a crucial attribute for success of students living in the 21st Century. The balance of academic rigour, subject integration, active citizenship and creativity demonstrated in Melilas, was cause for Henk to request a meeting with members of this teaching team, to draw from the unique and outstanding learning taking place in our Middle Years. All other areas of Panaga School also offered this team of Global Shell staff positive findings in the way that students are engaged in learning and are able to talk about their learning. This team also identified community engagement right across Panaga School that is central to learning, enhancing international mindedness opportunities, as local Bruneian connections take place throughout the curriculum.

Thank you to all members of the Panaga School Community who were so welcoming of Henk, Jo and Greg and congratulations on the positive findings this team reflected back about our learning community. Diwali Assembly Next Friday 17th November, in the Rampayoh Hall, there will be a Diwali Assembly for students right across P1 to M2, led by our Indian Community. Your child may come home next Friday with sweets and conversations in relation to the colourful and engaging celebrations that Diwali - Festival of Lights offers. Students from P4 to M2 will walk to Rampayoh for the assembly. Children in Mendaram will also be provided with a sample of Diwali celebrations throughout next week. Residentials Residential experiences for our students from P5 to M2 are embedded in our curriculum, bringing a range of hands-on experiences to enhance and complement student learning. Parents of P6 students have been presented with residential information and children have now made a commitment to attend their residential. Next Wednesday 14th November, P7 parents will be presented with residential information and timelines.

Car Park Safety Last week, members from BSP Head Office supported the Panaga School Community with a Car Park Intervention Session. In total, more than 110 cars were observed driving into both the Rampayoh and Teraja car parks. Of these vehicles, it is concerning to report that 10 children were observed not wearing seatbelts. Parents and carers, please help keep our children safe. Educate and enforce the use of seatbelts as a lifesaving device. To those who consistently abide by the lifesaving rules of wearing a seatbelt, thank you. It is encouraging that the vast majority of people are in this category, however, it is absolutely alarming that nearly 10 percent of vehicles are not compliant of such a crucial lifesaving behaviour. Panaga School staff on car park duty do intervene too when required to spread such important safety messages. Thank you for the support of all other community members who intervene as well on such neglectful and all too commonly occurring behaviours.

Melilas residentials do not rely on bookings of a private organiser. For this reason, parent information sessions I do look forward to a day where we have zero reports of and further information about M1 and M2 residentials unrestrained children in cars. will be offered at the beginning of Term 2, prior to the Regards, residentials due to take place in May 2019. IP

HAT - Personal Goals

This week, we are looking at Communication.

Communication Through their study of IPC, children will be able to: - Make themselves understood using verbal and non-verbal forms. - Be active listeners and react appropriately to information.

- Understand information communicated in a variety of ways. - Use a variety of tools and technologies for communicating their ideas. - Communicate in a range of different contexts and audiences. The school supports communication in more than one spoken language.

Mendaram

What this means to your child: I can understand information from verbal and non-verbal messages. I can express myself so that I am understood.

Rampayoh

I can use good listening strategies when I am communicating with others. I can communicate in a variety of ways thinking about my audience.

Teraja

I can listen well, use appropriate vocabulary and body language and talk clearly and confidently about my learning. I can independently communicate in different ways.

Melilas

I can explain and share my ideas clearly, accurately and in depth with anyone involved in the conversation and choose to actively listen and respond appropriately.

This week’s activity:

How are your child’s listening skills? Maybe you could read or tell your child a story without pictures and see how much they can retain or retell you. Can they answer the questions you have asked them? The game “Chinese whispers’ could be good fun to play around the dinner table. Start with a simple sentence to pass around and gradually increase the level of difficulty.

“We really had fun at the KB Boat Club with the fascinating view of the Belait River and fun and exciting activities like drawing and painting the river and learning about David Hockney and his brilliant photography and painting. So much fun!” - KC (P7S)

“I absolutely loved the school trip, it was so enjoyable. My favourite part of it was taking the pictures of the crystal clear water with my partner, Jack. I also liked drawing my pictures of the awesome trees that were all curly whirly.” - Finlay (P7S)

“It was a very good trip. The painting was fun and the photography was even better!” - Jack (P7S)

“I really enjoyed this trip because of the beautiful view of the river and the helpful and friendly parents. I especially enjoyed the painting because we could actually see what we were painting live!” - Joana (P7S)

“I loved the Entry Point. My favourite part of the trip was painting the river. I also loved taking pictures of the splash pool. I practiced the Personal Goal ‘Resilience’ because I had to redo my drawing again.” - Charlotte (P7S)

P7 IPC unit, ‘Go With the Flow’ - Watercolour and Photography In IPC, P7 have been recording images of water. They were able to experience watercolour painting in situ, as a part of their Entry Point to the unit ‘Go with the Flow’. They sketched views of the beautiful Belait River and then developed these sketches with watercolour washes and pen and ink. Students also had the opportunity to try their hand at digital photography and were able to capture some stunning images of water in the splash pool. Back in class, we created photo joiners in response to painter and photographer David Hockney’s work. By Josie Kidd, Art & DT Leader for Learning, and Mr Zaim, Learning Support Assistant

PNHS bring excitement to Teraja with hornbill box donation On 19th October, the Panaga Natural History Society (PNHS) members visited Panaga School to donate a hornbill box to the Wildlife Warriors. The hornbill box, specifically designed for these amazing birds, is now hung in a tree in the Teraja playground. Hopefully, a hornbill pair will find our box to be a suitable nest and make it their home during the breeding season. What happens when a nest has been selected? After the female has selected the nest and has made herself comfortable, the male brings lumps of soil moistened with his saliva. Sometimes, this is mixed with droppings, chewed wood and bark. Together, the male and female build a wall of mud: the male from the outside and the female from the inside. This means that the female is trapped inside the nest until her chicks are ready to flee the nest. There is only a small hole visible through which the female receives food and communicates with the male. Females stay in their nest for 3 to 5 months and are dependent on the male. The Wildlife Warriors would like to thank PNHS for their kind donation. We will keep you updated on the nest.
