Our Panaga School Early Years have completed the ‘Rhyme-a-Day’ challenge. Well done to all children! Last week, our Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Primary One classes took part in World Nursery Rhyme Week and enjoyed learning the 5 nursery rhymes chosen by Music Bugs for this year’s ‘Rhyme-a-Day’ challenge. The rhymes learnt were: Five Currant Buns, Humpty Dumpty, A Sailor Went to Sea, I’m a Little Teapot and Round and Round the Garden. The learning activities that supported teaching the rhymes were varied; investigating crime scenes following clues, baking currant buns, making tea, creating recycled sea creatures and going on a nature walk round and round the garden. All activities could not have taken place without the great support offered from our parent body and we are truly grateful for all of the time that was given by the parents (and grandparents) who led these activities. We would especially like to recognise Wendy (Robyn and Hazel’s mum) who spent time with us daily to help us learn the songs - her singing and piano playing brought another level to the children’s learning. The learning was celebrated through an assembly and we are all very proud of how the children shared their songs with parents. Panaga Club Library have also been supporting World Nursery Rhyme Week. Rhyme, Rattle and Roll sessions take place every Monday at 9.00-9.30am with Miss Claire. If you have a baby or toddler please do come along and join us for some shared singing. Amah First Aid training completed - congratulations! This week saw the final session of our Amah First Aid Training, with a focus on bandages, burns and bruises. All Amahs that attended the three sessions received a certificate for their commitment to the course. It is great to see the confidence that the ladies now have and we are grateful to Fraser Rowbotham (Advanced Paramedic BSP search & Rescue) and Marie McCready (Paediatric Nurse) for all of their efforts in coordinating and delivering this training. Further training is being considered for next term and will be advertised once confirmed.

LEARNING ABOUT BATIK Over the last two weeks, the children in Mendaram have been learning all about the Indonesian art of Batik, linked with our IEYC unit, ‘Imagine That!’ We started the week with a special visit from Miss Josie and Mr Zaim from Teraja. They showed the children the hot wax and demonstrated to the children how to use a tjantin to create their artwork and then how to apply the dye. The children then went on the explore making lines and shapes using a flour and water mixture, before going on to make a Batik masterpiece on fabric. We also had a visit from three Indonesian mums who created a beautiful batik for the children to decorate with dye.
Thank you so much for helping to excite the children and enhance their international learning. By the Mendaram Team

Garden Gang at play! Mendaram Garden Gang amazed us again this week with their commitment and drive to improving our outside learning environment. They presented Nursery with a great gazebo to trial. We have been looking for shade solutions for our playgrounds for some time and are so pleased with the idea which was sourced and offered by our Garden Gang. We have carried out all necessary safety checks and have now gained approval for an order to be placed to purchase more of these gazebo structures. They will be well utilised, not only in Mendaram, but across the whole school. Many thanks in particular to Fraser and Naomi Rowbotham for taking the time to find a solution. The children absolutely love their new shade and we can’t wait to get more! Learning outside is such an important part of our school day in Mendaram and there are so many wonderful benefits to learning outdoors. The following article raises some very good points about the importance of outdoor play for Early Years: www.earlyyearsresources.co.uk/ blog/2016/03/5-benefits-of-outdoorlearning-in-early-years/ By the Mendaram team

Thank you for your support of P1’s Backpack Appeal for Labi children
A big thank you to everyone who donated backpacks and items for the ‘Backpack Appeal’. Last Saturday, members of the P1 team were lucky enough to visit three of the Labi schools to deliver the backpacks. We were warmly greeted at each school and enjoyed sharing books and story maps with the children. We then presented each child with their new backpack. All children were very grateful and enjoyed rummaging through their bag. Thank you again, your generosity is very much appreciated. By the P1 team

P5 are bright sparks! During our IPC unit, Bright Sparks, the children in P5 have been learning all about electricity. One of the particular focuses of this unit has been sustainable energy and how it could shape the future. P5 have spent a lot of time looking at solar energy. This started during their Entry Point, where the children made solar ovens which heated cups of water. This learning was extended this week by a visit from Jenna, a parent who has a particular interest in solar power. She explained how solar rays are captured using solar panels and how it is used to make electricity. She also brought in a solar panel. The children were excited by the chance to see this and learn about its everyday use. Throughout her presentation, she was impressed with the interest and knowledge that the children showed on the topic! The learning for the children doesn’t stop there though! Next week, P5 children are visiting Tenaga Suria Solar Energy Plant for a chance to see how solar energy can be used on a larger scale. By the P5 team

M1 students competed to create the winning design in our Health & Safety Poster Design Competition.
Panaga School Weekly, Issue Eight, 30th November 2018
A BOLD DESIGN Aliza Uddin in M1S submitted the winning design. Her poster was judged by both students and staff and it was agreed that her design was clear and easy to understand. It explains the need to dress safely in the workshop, in a concise way. Mr Simon was particularly impressed by the quality of the design work and the way that the students had worked to a real life design brief. When presented with the difficult task of judging, he said, “They are all so good, it’s a hard job to choose.”
SAFETY FIRST Children and parents are reminded that students from P6 - M2 must wear clothing that covers the knees and closed toe shoes on the days they have lessons in the Science or Art & Design Technology rooms.

IP
HAT - Personal Goals
Respect This week, we are looking at respect: Through their study of IPC, the children will: Know about the varying needs of other people, other living things and the environment. Learn to show respect for the needs of other people, other living things and the environment. Be able to act in accordance with the needs of other people, other living things and the environment.
What this means to your child: Mendaram
I am kind and I am looking after my friends and the environment. Am I making a good choice?
Rampayoh
I look after people’s feelings and I take care of belongings.
Teraja
I show respect for the varied needs of others and the local environment, acting appropriately in a number of different situations. I can demonstrate this in school and further afield. I recognise when others are behaving respectfully towards me.
Melilas
I can respect different thoughts and opinions from cultures other than my own. I can respect the environment and people’s thoughts. I can also apologise to the person and learn from my mistakes.
This week’s activity:
Have you noticed the different ways that you communicate with different people? As a family you could discuss how you communicate in a respectful way with your parents, grandparents, teachers, adults you don't know and other children. Is there anything that you need to change? Can you recognise the different ways you approach different people?

I was blown away by the clarity and accuracy of some of the solutions in our first week. There is a diversity of approaches which pleases the mathematician in me. Well done to Varun, Krittika, Bryce, Richard, and Saksham. Really looking forward to next week’s solutions. Mr Simon
