Happy Birthday Nigeria! Nigeria was 60 on 1st October and children in Rampayoh enjoyed learning about why this day was special for some of our families. The children had the opportunity to visit the entrance foyer display and learn about Nigeria. They saw traditional clothes, instruments, jewellery and utensils. The teachers were very proud of the respect that all children showed when exploring the Nigerian instruments and artefacts. The children also demonstrated excellent enquiry skills, as they asked great questions to develop their knowledge about Nigeria.

On Friday, 2nd October, the children attended an assembly to help them reflect on their learning and develop a deeper understanding about Nigerian culture and traditions. They had lots of fun dancing and learning to sing a song to help them learn about the Nigerian flag. The children in Panaga School are very fortunate to have their learning environments enhanced to help them consider self and other when thinking about cultural identity. Many thanks to Miss Emma (P2) for working with Temi and Iyi’s parents and our Nigerian community to create this wonderful opportunity to learn about Nigerian culture. We welcome the opportunity to offer further learning experiences from all cultural groups. If you feel you are able to help coordinate a special day from your home country please let your child’s class teacher know. LSA Training

Supporting Early Childhood English Teaching and Additional Learning Needs This half term, the Additional Needs Team (ANT) have provided training to our Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) to support children’s learning across the school. Almost 20 Early Years LSAs from Pre-nursery, Nursery and P1 have been trained about English language learning in early childhood, led by Rachel Marsden, English Additional Language (EAL) specialist teacher. Through this 6 week program, LSAs have studied how children learn language, the importance of learning through play, and how to support language learning through our learning environments.

Discussing how children learn language.

Roleplaying our support strategies.

LSAs from Teraja and Melilas have also been following a 6 week training program with Mia France, ANT Lead Teacher. This program has focused on how to support children with barriers to their learning. Barriers included dyslexia, sensory processing difficulties, autism, ADHD and mathematical acquisition. The program also included a session devoted to general teaching practices that support all children.

Phonics and Reading Parent Information Session Friday, 23rd October 7.45-8.15 a.m. Teraja Meeting Room Presenter: Rachel Marsden, English Language Teacher This workshop is for parents of children new to Phonics and to Panaga School. Phonics play an essential role in both reading and writing; it helps children to break down unfamiliar words when reading and supports the spelling process in writing. In this workshop, online resources and practical strategies will be shared so you can support your child at home with phonics and reading. Suitable for both English speaking families, and those with English as an additional language. To respect social distancing guidelines still in place, registration is limited to 20 participants (one person per family please). Please add your name, child’s name and class using this Google Doc link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1I7x1R-X5Noaiv2bvLcUvl8CSGp9BcW0GOEJlcgZ3xQ/edit?usp=sharing

Recently, a small team of Rampayoh teachers had the opportunity to visit the new and evolving ‘Jungle School’ learning landscape at Hornbill School . It is grounded in the principles of Forest School and takes place in a natural environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world. It is currently being led by the learning support assistant Vladislav Veljic. We are very grateful that he was able to share the developmental ethos of Forest Schools with us. He shared examples of the holistic growth opportunities to learners of a play based environment grounded in nature, where supported risk-taking allows confidence and self-esteem to flourish. It was wonderful to extend our knowledge on this and it provided many ideas on how elements of this can be created within our own setting, to support learner development within positive outdoor experiences and connections. Watch this space!

This week, the children in Nursery enthusiastically came to school dressed up in clothes that said ’This is Me!’. The Orangutans and Sunbears started their exit point by walking proudly down the catwalk showing off their stunning outfits, followed by a performance of songs that we learnt during the unit. We are learning that we are all different and sometimes we like different things. We are also learning how to get along and play with other children in our Nursery.

We have learned about different primary and secondary sources in History.

We used sources to find out information about a mystery person.

We understand how sources can help us find out about the past.

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” Degas Below are a few examples of using art to help us understand the world of Explorers and Adventurers. Skill levels developed and the children have a greater understanding of the ‘Mother of American Modernism’- Georgia O’Keefe. After a visit from a parent who is a Fine Arts teacher, the P5 children were truly inspired to learn all about water colour painting.
