In our attempts to calm mother nature we are very excited to be promoting our ‘I’m Pollinator Friendly’ line of plants this year. We feel that our little pollinators need all the help they can get, and we have created tags that will draw the consumer towards these popular plants. Look for the butterfly on select tags. At Pan Am we feel very fortunate to be able to give back to our communities across the country. We support many food banks and shelters and donate the cost of what we would normally spend on sending out Christmas cards each year to you our customers. As always, we extend an open invitation to visit and tour our nurseries. We also invite you to view our website at www.panamnursery.com. Sincerely, Pan Am

Dangling heart shaped flowers are held on arching stems. Performs best in a rich, moist soil with partial shade.

Sempervivum are more commonly known as "Hens and Chicks" and are a beautiful, hardy perennial succulent. The name sempervivum means "live-forever" and they are well adapted to thrive in some of the leanest soils and drought conditions. Sempervivums form low growing rosettes of succulent leaves that come in a large variety of sizes, colours and textures. Each spring the rosette produces new offsets (chicks). These clumps will spread into beautiful dense clusters of attractive growth. Chicks can be carefully removed and planted elsewhere. They thrive in sunny areas and require good draining soil and are an excellent container or rock garden plant for waterwise gardens.

Hosta Collection #1 These shade perennials thrive in low light, and best of all, they get better with age. As members of the lily family, they are hardy, easy to grow and care for. Gardeners turn to hostas when they are looking for good shade perennials, but most cultivars actually do better if they get a little sun. Early morning sun and filtered shade in the afternoon seem to be ideal. The gold and green types and many variegated varieties do need some sun to develop good leaf colour.

Peony Collection Herbaceous garden peonies boast all the attributes gardeners value: large, plentiful and easy to grow. Many have sweetly fragrant flowers and are deer-resistant, drought-resistant and cast-iron hardy (to Zone 3). The plants are also substantial enough to be used on their own as a low hedge with foliage that stays attractive for months (and makes great camouflage for ripening spring bulbs). Peonies are tremendously long-lived. Many a gardener can point to a treasured unnamed specimen passed along from the garden of a parent, grandparent or friend. Peonies prefer full sun and are excellent as cutflowers in a bouquet.

Whether you have a secluded pond or a serene woodland setting, you will find that an assortment of ferns will add beauty to any spot in the garden. Shade loving ferns appreciate organic, evenly moist, well drained soil. If your soil is heavy with clay or sand you can add compost or other organic matter to help balance it out. RTED
Imported directly from Japan! There are very few plants that can compete with a tree peony in full bloom. They flower from late April to early May, although the flowering season can vary from year to year. A mature plant can have in excess of a hundred flowers, and these can be 25 cm (10”) across. These huge, ruffled satin-like flowers are extremely hardy (Zone 4-9). There was a time, many years ago in ancient China, when the only person who could own a tree peony was the Emperor himself.

IN THE COMMUNITY PROUDLY A MEMBER OF
ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE - No Neonicotinoids to help save our bees. The neonicotinoids are a relatively new class of pesticides that have an effect on the bee's central nervous system. When used it spreads to the whole plant including pollen and nectar that the bees eat. Scientific studies indicate that, bees that feed on neonicotinoid contaminated pollen and nectar, forage less and produce fewer offspring. Pesticide use has become inevitable in modern agriculture. With pesticide usage increasing during the last four decades, the side effects are also increasing, one of which is the toxicity to honey bees. According to a study in the UK, pesticides damage the ability of bees to gather food and are also killing them. Since bees are the most important pollinators of crops, the use of pesticides can considerably reduce the yield of cross pollinated crops. In addition to the above effects, contamination of bee products, and loss in production of honey are the other effects caused by pesticides on bees. As these studies may not be 100% proven we will not take that chance to harm this integral part of the food chain. We have for many years discontinued the use of chemicals containing neonicotinoids. Our focus is on safer more natural solutions and practices.
RECYCLING In recent years we have made a concerted effort to recycle all of the waste material that we receive in raw material and use in production. All of our plastic containers, greenhouse plastic and stretch film are picked up throughout the season. We recycle 100% of all cardboard, wood and pallets that come through our nurseries. All of our organic material is separated and disposed of responsibly. For high traffic shipping lanes we use our Envirack metal displays that are reclaimed and reused the following season.
Pan Am awarded top recycler certificate from our recycling partners Westcoast Plastics.
GIVING BACK Each year we select charities in our communities that make a significant difference in the lives of people less fortuntate than ourselves. Below are the four main charities chosen in 2018. Our selections are not only based on the suggestions of our staff across the country, but more importantly what each charity represents and the needs they are addressing. Food banks and shelters are an integral part of our communities and are always in desperate need of help. We are proud to support the Surrey Food Bank, St. Matthew’s House, Nightshift Ministries and Neighbour 2 Neighbour.

Zone Map
The founders of Pan American Nursery Products Inc., John and Ted van Zanten, immigrated to Canada back in 1950. In Holland, their family had been in the flower bulb growing and exporting business for many years. Their inate desire to continue that family legacy led them to become a flower bulb wholesaler to the local British Columbian market in 1958. With the help and support of their wives, Marie and Bep, the quest to establish themselves as an industry leader began. In 1960, the two brothers purchased a small company called Pan American Bulb. At that time, it was primarily a spring and fall bulb wholesaler. Ted and John set up business in a small 7,500 sq. ft. warehouse and office located on an acre and a half of land in what is now downtown Whalley, BC. Pan American grew rapidly during the next several years, as did the van Zanten family. John and Marie had five sons and one daughter, while Ted and Bep had two sons and two daughters. All of the family members grew up involved in the business, either after school, on weekends, or on holiday breaks. In 1972, Cary joined John and Ted full time, followed by John Jr. (1975), Ed (1975), Margie (1978), Rob (1979), Linda (1988), and Don Williamson (Linda's husband) in 1997. The company's success was not built through the efforts of family members alone though. The dedication of new and long time employees has helped to mould Pan American into one of Canada's leading wholesale nurseries. As sales grew across the country, it became necessary to establish a satellite office and distribution warehouse in Ontario. In 1977, Pan Am opened a facility in Mississauga, Ontario. The next major step was the construction of a modern 100,000 sq. ft. warehousing, production, and office facility on thirty acres of land at 5151-152 St. in Surrey, BC in 1982. This site facilitated the natural progression of the company, integrating a first class growing operation into the business as we continued to expand our market share. After that, a link office was established in Woodland, Washington, starting our advancement into the US market. In 1995, increased growth in our container market necessitated the purchase of fourteen acres of land with a warehouse, office, and stateof-the-art greenhouses in Millgrove, Ontario. This acquisition solidified Pan Am as a national source for not only bare root and packaged products, but also container grown stock. An additional eighty-six acres were purchased adjacent to the Millgrove property in late 1997. Rapid greenhouse construction and increased container production have made this acreage fully operational. The next generation of family members also grew up involved in the business after school, on weekends or on holiday breaks. Joining Pan Am full time were Ian (2004), Craig (2007), and Amber (2007). Pan American currently wholesales several types of nursery products including perennials, small fruits, vines, flowering shrubs, seed potatoes, and onion sets. Our primary focuses, however, are bare root, packaged, and container grown rose bushes. Our products are marketed under these brand names: Windmill, Roses by Pan Am, Clean’n’Easy, Only the Best, and Flower Carpet. Our constantly evolving product lines and strong growth suggest that the future forecast will include extensive capital expansion in automated packaging equipment and an increased focus on US and international markets.
Beyond that, who knows? There are twenty-five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Grand opening of our new warehouse facility in Surrey, BC - 1983. From left to right: John, Marie, Bep and Ted van Zanten. Ted (left) and John Sr. (right) delivering bulbs to a customer in Holland. circa 1948
