Sempervivum are more commonly known as "Hens and Chicks" and are a beautiful, hardy perennial succulent. The name sempervivum means "live-forever" and they are well adapted to thrive in some of the leanest soils and drought conditions. Sempervivums form low growing rosettes of succulent leaves that come in a large variety of sizes, colours and textures. Each spring the rosette produces new offsets (chicks). These clumps will spread into beautiful dense clusters of attractive growth. Chicks can be carefully removed and planted elsewhere. They thrive in sunny areas and require good draining soil and are an excellent container or rock garden plant for waterwise gardens.

Hosta Collection #1 These shade perennials thrive in low light, and best of all, they get better with age. As members of the lily family, they are hardy, easy to grow and care for. Gardeners turn to hostas when they are looking for good shade perennials, but most cultivars actually do better if they get a little sun. Early morning sun and filtered shade in the afternoon seem to be ideal. The gold and green types and many variegated varieties do need some sun to develop good leaf colour.

Peony Collection Herbaceous garden peonies boast all the attributes gardeners value: large, plentiful and easy to grow. Many have sweetly fragrant flowers and are deer-resistant, drought-resistant and cast-iron hardy (to Zone 3). The plants are also substantial enough to be used on their own as a low hedge with foliage that stays attractive for months (and makes great camouflage for ripening spring bulbs). Peonies are tremendously long-lived. Many a gardener can point to a treasured unnamed specimen passed along from the garden of a parent, grandparent or friend. Peonies prefer full sun and are excellent as cutflowers in a bouquet.

Whether you have a secluded pond or a serene woodland setting, you will find that an assortment of ferns will add beauty to any spot in the garden. Most ferns do well in partial shade or dappled sunlight, but there are many which will do well with quite a bit of sun, provided they get enough water. Shade loving ferns appreciate organic, evenly moist, well drained soil. If your soil is heavy with clay or sand you can add compost or other organic matter to help balance it out. IN THE COMMUNITY PROUDLY A MEMBER OF
ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE - No Neonicotinoids to help save our bees. The neonicotinoids are a relatively new class of pesticides that have an effect on the bee's central nervous system. When used it spreads to the whole plant including pollen and nectar that the bees eat. Scientific studies indicate that, bees that feed on neonicotinoid contaminated pollen and nectar, forage less and produce fewer offspring. Pesticide use has become inevitable in modern agriculture. With pesticide usage increasing during the last four decades, the side effects are also increasing, one of which is the toxicity to honey bees. According to a study in the UK, pesticides damage the ability of bees to gather food and are also killing them. Since bees are the most important pollinators of crops, the use of pesticides can considerably reduce the yield of cross pollinated crops. In addition to the above effects, contamination of bee products, and loss in production of honey are the other effects caused by pesticides on bees. As these studies may not be 100% proven we will not take that chance to harm this integral part of the food chain. We have for many years discontinued the use of chemicals containing neonicotinoids. Our focus is on safer more natural solutions and practices.
RECYCLING In recent years we have made a concerted effort to recycle all of the waste material that we receive in raw material and use in production. All of our plastic containers, greenhouse plastic and stretch film are picked up throughout the season. We recycle 100% of all cardboard, wood and pallets that come through our nurseries. All of our organic material is separated and disposed of responsibly. For high traffic shipping lanes we use our Envirack metal displays that are reclaimed and reused the following season.
Pan Am awarded top recycler certificate from our recycling partners Westcoast Plastics.
GIVING BACK Each year we select charities in our communities that make a significant difference in the lives of people less fortuntate than ourselves. Below are the four main charities chosen in 2018. Our selections are not only based on the suggestions of our staff across the country, but more importantly what each charity represents and the needs they are addressing. Food banks and shelters are an integral part of our communities and are always in desperate need of help. We are proud to support the Surrey Food Bank, St. Matthew’s House, Nightshift Ministries and Neighbour 2 Neighbour.

Bare root Rose Planting Instructions and Helpful hints UPON ARRIVAL: Check that the roses are moist and water if necessary. Pot your roses as soon as possible or store in a cool shaded area. 2 to 5º C (35 to 40º F) is ideal. Do not allow to freeze! We do not use chemicals on the bare root roses so there may occasionally be some shipping mold on the plants. This will soon dissipate after potting or you can use a strong stream of water to wash the mold off if you prefer. SOIL AND FERTILIZERS: For the healthiest most attractive roses possible, it is important that your soil mixture drains well, and the pH is between 5.5 and 6.5, and proper amounts of nutrients are available to the plant. Best results are also achieved by incorporating a low to medium rate of a slow release fertilizer along with a liquid feed program once growth commences. (Maintain SME at between 2.5 and 3.5.) CONTAINER AND ROSE SIZING: Although many nurseries use a 2 gallon container for their roses, a 2 ½ or 3 gallon container is highly recommended. The rose will perform better and its retail value will greatly exceed the extra cost. (Some nurseries are even potting some of the extra-large # 1 Grade* plants in 5 gallon containers and are able to more than double their margins!) Patio Roses should be potted into 5 gallon containers. * “#1" Grade refers to the trade designated top size for 2 year old budded roses. 3X Grade refers to the trade designated top size for 12 – 18 month own root roses. This is why, on an average, # 1 roses are larger than most 3X “Grade”. POTTING: Add several inches of soil, insert the rose, keeping it nicely centered and the bud union about even with the top of the pot. As you fill the soil around the roots try to avoid air pockets but do not overly firm the soil so as to restrict drainage. (During potting, sprinkle the remaining bare root plants in the box occasionally and keep the poly bag closed to prevent the remaining plants from drying.) It is important to water immediately, and thoroughly saturate the soil after potting. (Completely saturating the soil just after potting re-hydrates the roots, ‘wakes up’ the plant, and flushes the soil for a clean start.) GROWING: After the initial thorough watering it is not necessary (and actually be better for root development) not to water the soil again until the moisture content becomes just under medium. This could be as much as several weeks…normally once the rose has about 5cm (2”) of growth. (Note: If using a slow release fertilizer be sure to monitor salt levels and flush if required.) Keep the canes moist until the roses show some growth. (Keeping the canes moist during potting and for the two or three weeks after has shown to virtually eliminate mortality.) A quick spray of the canes every day or two with a spray gun or a short cycle of your sprinklers is ideal (while adding minimal moisture to the soil). If starting in a greenhouse, do not allow the temperature to ever exceed 25º C (80º F) until the plants are well into leaf. (Temperatures above 28º C (85º F) for even a few minutes before the plant leafs out can damage the rose or worse.) Roses are best established at temperatures between 5 and 14 º C (40 to 57º F) over a longer period of time and will finish much nicer than those forced at higher temperatures. Once the roots are established, maintain no less than a medium amount of moisture during the growing season. It is best to water early in the morning during the growing season. A regular application of water soluble fertilizer throughout the growing season will also help ensure optimum looking plants all season long. Soon after your roses are fully leafed out and certainly before the first sign of a flower bud, it is essential that you begin a regular preventative spray program** every 10 to 14 days to ensure your roses remain healthy and attractive all season long. (We recommend that you alternate with 2 or more sprays to guard against fungal diseases…the internet has many suggestions on “spraying roses organically” as well.) ** Note: Rugosa Roses (the roses with the light green “leathery” leaves) are extremely disease resistant and are actually susceptible to tip burn or worse when sprayed with fungicides.

The founders of Pan American Nursery Products Inc., John and Ted van Zanten, immigrated to Canada back in 1950. In Holland, their family had been in the flower bulb growing and exporting business for many years. Their inate desire to continue that family legacy led them to become a flower bulb wholesaler to the local British Columbian market in 1958. With the help and support of their wives, Marie and Bep, the quest to establish themselves as an industry leader began. In 1960, the two brothers purchased a small company called Pan American Bulb. At that time, it was primarily a spring and fall bulb wholesaler. Ted and John set up business in a small 7,500 sq. ft. warehouse and office located on an acre and a half of land in what is now downtown Whalley, BC. Pan American grew rapidly during the next several years, as did the van Zanten family. John and Marie had five sons and one daughter, while Ted and Bep had two sons and two daughters. All of the family members grew up involved in the business, either after school, on weekends, or on holiday breaks. In 1972, Cary joined John and Ted full time, followed by John Jr. (1975), Ed (1975), Margie (1978), Rob (1979), Linda (1988), and Don Williamson (Linda's husband) in 1997. The company's success was not built through the efforts of family members alone though. The dedication of new and long time employees has helped to mould Pan American into one of Canada's leading wholesale nurseries. As sales grew across the country, it became necessary to establish a satellite office and distribution warehouse in Ontario. In 1977, Pan Am opened a facility in Mississauga, Ontario. The next major step was the construction of a modern 100,000 sq. ft. warehousing, production, and office facility on forty-five acres of land at 5151-152 St. in Surrey, BC in 1982. This site facilitated the natural progression of the company, integrating a first class growing operation into the business as we continued to expand our market share. After that, a link office was established in Woodland, Washington, starting our advancement into the US market. In 1995, increased growth in our container market necessitated the purchase of fourteen acres of land with a warehouse, office, and stateof-the-art greenhouses in Millgrove, Ontario. This acquisition solidified Pan Am as a national source for not only bare root and packaged products, but also container grown stock. An additional eighty-six acres were purchased adjacent to the Millgrove property in late 1997. Rapid greenhouse construction and increased container production have made this acreage fully operational. The next generation of family members also grew up involved in the business after school, on weekends or on holiday breaks. Joining Pan Am full time were Ian (2004), Craig (2007), and Amber (2007). Pan American currently wholesales several types of nursery products including perennials, small fruits, vines, flowering shrubs, seed potatoes, and onion sets. Our primary focuses, however, are bare root, packaged, and container grown rose bushes. Our products are marketed under these brand names: Windmill, Roses by Pan Am, Clean’n’Easy, Only the Best, and Flower Carpet. Our constantly evolving product lines and strong growth suggest that the future forecast will include extensive capital expansion in automated packaging equipment and an increased focus on US and international markets.
Beyond that, who knows? There are twenty-five grandchildren. Grand opening of our new warehouse facility in Surrey, BC - 1983. From left to right: John, Marie, Bep and Ted van Zanten. Ted (left) and John Sr. (right) delivering bulbs to a customer in Holland. circa 1948
