LONDON REVEALED MAY-JUNE 2019 TENTH EDITION

WELCOME TO THE TENTH EDITION OF LONDON REVEALED Almost halfway through 2019 already - how did that happen? It’s time to make plans for the summer and what could be better than a weekend festival (page 20)? There's sure to be one to suit your taste in music, or maybe food or comedy is more your thing?

it’s simply sublime. A favourite summer pastime of Londoners is after work alfresco dinner and drinks in tucked away beer gardens and outside the bars on the banks of the Thames. The city even has beaches to relax on (page 8) so you needn’t take a train to the coast. The only thing that isn’t more enjoyable is getting on the Tube! Make sure you take a bottle of water with you.

Of course, we think London is the best city in the world all year round but in the summer

With the world’s most renowned garden design event, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, just around the corner we spoke to our florist Ami Roberts from Chic Flower Designs about the best blooms of the season and wellbeing from plants which is this year’s theme at Chelsea. What are your seasonal picks? Peonies are amazing flowers - they come in a wide range of colours from deep burgundy to shades of coral, pinks and whites. They have large round blooms once open.

Hydrangeas are big bouncy blooms in a wide range of colours from bold shades of deep purple, cerise pink and Chelsea blue to soft pastel shades. They’re perfect for all types of flower arrangements and can last over two weeks.

Calla lilies have long green stems and large white heads perfect to create simple tall elegant vases. They also come in yellows, pinks, black and orange.

Delphiniums have very tall stems and come in the most amazing blues, purples, pinks and whites. Some are as tall as 150cm great for large vases and pedestal arrangements. 16

LONDON REVEALED MAY-JUNE 2019 TENTH EDITION

What tips do you have for creating beautiful displays in your own home?

❀ Always make sure your vase or container is clean. Baking soda is great with white vinegar to remove limescale and any bacteria that can cause your flowers to degrade quickly.

❀ Add a quarter of a Milton sterilising tablet to fresh water to keep the water clean and clear for up to two weeks and it will keep the flowers lasting longer.

❀ Make sure you always re-cut your flowers before placing them in water. Cut any woody stems at an angle so they can take more water up into the stem.

❀ Woody stemmed flowers like hydrangeas want to be in deep water but soft-stemmed flowers that don’t have any foliage (like calla lilies) should be put in shallow water or they will rot.

❀ Remove any foliage and thorns from flowers that will sit below the water line. Roses will last up to 90% longer if you remove all the leaves and foliage just leaving the top two. Are plants and flowers good for health and wellbeing? There are so many benefits to having indoor plants that have been proven including: ❀ Improved mood ❀ Reduced stress levels ❀ Increased productivity ❀ Better air quality ❀ Reduced fatigue and headaches ❀ Reduced blood pressure

A DAY AT

THE RACES Horse racing is family-friendly, adrenaline-fuelled and a great excuse to dress up. It’s about enjoying a day out with friends rather than winning big. We talked to Joanna Cody-Boutcher, who is Racing Secretary and Rider for racehorse trainer Philip Hobbs, for some insider knowledge on how to make the most of your day at the races.

H BB

IP

O

S

PH I L

Joanna Cody-Boutcher

How should I choose which race course/date to go to? Personally I like to go to the bigger meetings like Royal Ascot for the atmosphere. Some racecourses now have bands playing after racing which is a great combination for a day out with friends.

28

LONDON REVEALED MAY-JUNE 2019 TENTH EDITION

Highlights of the Spring/ Summer Fixtures in and around London Epsom Downs Investec Derby Festival 31st May - 1st June Ascot Royal Ascot 18th June - 22nd June Sandown Coral-Eclipse Festival 5th - 6th July Kempton Irish Night and Evening Racing 14th August How do I read a race card? Race cards should always have an index somewhere in them! But in general, it will list the horse's name, age, gender, owner, trainer, jockey and the horse’s previous form. It will also tell you if the horse is wearing any extras like a hood, tongue strap, blinkers, sheepskin cheek pieces, a visor, eye cover or eyeshield. How do I place a bet? You can place bets on the Tote or use any of the bookmakers at the racecourse. Check the minimum bet amount. Betting ‘each way’ includes the paying out of winnings to placed horses usually first and second but it depends on the number of horses in the race as to how many places they will pay. Your bet will be doubled when you go each way so £5 each way will cost you £10. How do I spot a winner? Before the race, the horses are walked around the pre-parade ring at the racecourse as part of their warm up. They then go to the

saddling boxes to get tacked up ready for the race before walking around the parade ring while the trainers, owners and jockeys discuss their tactics. You can study the trainers and horses form but if you’re just out for a bit of fun then I would choose the best looking horse in the parade ring or a particular name that stands out for you. Fashion Tips There are different rules at different courses and depending on the race day and which enclosure you’re in. For ladies, fascinators and hats are very in. Straps on your dress should be a certain thickness, skirts need to fall below the knee and take something to cover your shoulders. Gents should wear a shirt and tie (no jeans or trainers!) or a top hat and tails for the Ascot Royal Enclosure. Picnic Hamper Essentials Most race courses will let you take your own picnic in. Check on the website for exactly what you’re allowed. Joanna’s top picnic hamper picks for race day are… • Champagne • Pimms • G&Ts • Strawberries 29

• Cucumber sandwiches • Salmon quiche • Cheese and biscuits

LONDON REVEALED MAY-JUNE 2019 TENTH EDITION

FIVE MINUTES WITH... FRANCESCO FILIZZOLA What has been your best gig to date? One of my best gigs with Colomboloco has definitely been at PRIMO Bar. It's one of the few venues in London where the environment is perfect to create a great show and to make the audience feel part of it. How would you describe your music? A blend of the best Dolce Vita swing, Spanish-Latin fire, rock and roll extravaganza, opera power, lounge music charm, and Neapolitan and tarantella flavour. Who inspires you and why? I was born on the West coast of Southern Italy (Praia a Mare) and grew up in Rotonda, a small village in the heart of the National Park of Pollino. Mountains and sea, combined with the classical and folk music typical of the area, have always played an important role in my life and contributed to shape my personality and philosophy. I was lucky enough to grow up in a family where music was extremely important. It was my grandfather Giosuè Filizzola (a composer of classical music) who passed the passion for music on to me and once told me: “You need to play only what you really feel and make sound without forgetting the importance of silence”. What’s your favourite cocktail? Negroni (made with Cocchi, Antica Formula, Mancino or Punt e Mes Vermouth).

What’s been the craziest moment in your career so far? I’ve had so many crazy moments and some of them are top secret! The ones I can share with you are when I sang for the Royal family, when Deep Purple joined Colomboloco on stage and when the Rolling Stones and Kylie got up and started dancing at our performance. What are the favourite songs in your set? Suspicious Minds, Mambo Italiano, Americano, La Vie en Rose, Volare, Delilah, Caruso, Can't Help Falling in Love, My Way, Quando Quando and lots more! Who have you had the pleasure to work with? I have had the pleasure to work with so many interesting people but one of the most amazing is Paul Staveley O'Duffy. We are working on a single, and the idea is to turn it into a musical or movie. To work with him is not just producing or creating music but it's something deeper, it's simply magic. What have you got coming up? With Colomboloco we just finished our second album based on our own compositions which blend dynamic and eclectic folk and Mediterranean blends from across Southern Europe with Tarantella, classical opera, as well as Greek, Spanish and Turkish traditional music in an epic journey around the globe worthy of Columbus himself. The date for the launch has not been decided yet.
