Youth Week in Warren

By WARREN VIEW CLUB RETURN of a very popular guest speaker after many years, was the highlight of Warren VIEW club’s monthly luncheon held on Wednesday, April 16 at the local RSL. Members were delighted to welcome back Susie Balogh, the high-profi le and dynamic Economic Development and Visitation Manager (EDVM) for Warren Shire Council.

This marked Susie’s second time speaking to the group; the fi rst being seven years ago, at which time she had only recently arrived in Warren as a full-time carer for her mother.

She shared at the time her journey from professional ballerina to corporate executive and then to carer — a deeply-personal chapter for Ms Balogh.

Her return this year reflected a very different role, now leading major tourism and economic development projects for Warren region.

By DALLAS REEVES WHILE much local traffic traditionally flows to Dubbo from western NSW for shopping, tourism, and entertainment, that could all change next month with a local classic music concert event for the ages.

The rare opportunity to witness world-class musicians playing in remote and regional Australia returns in May with the 2025 Warren Chamber Music Festival.

For those living regionally, this is a unique opportunity to hear and experience world-class performers without having to travel to the big smoke.

Inspiring founder and the Artistic Director of the Warren Chamber Music Festival, Frances Evans, has again put together a wonderful list of performers for this year’s fourshow extravaganza.

Frances said people that make the trip west to any of the four concerts in early May will not be disappointed.

“It’s surprising that a world-class concert can be held in Warren, but we were just determined to bring something really unique and special out to Warren,” Frances enthused.

“Being curated by a local …each concert is connected to our people and place,” she added.

The four-show event will have something for all musical connoisseurs, she said.

“So it’s not like you are going along to a subscription concert because you like what is listed, you will like everything that is presented in these concerts,” Frances explained.

“It’s a real mish-mash of popular favourites and it’s also an introduction to new and wonderful music; ot’s a great combination of personalised music and quaint venues.”

Third instalment of wonderful festival THE Warren Chamber Music Festival is a biennial event, and this year will mark the third instalment of the organisation that was founded in 2021.

This year’s festival includes two performances in Warren and one each in iconic halls in Nevertire and Collie.

Four spectacular concerts will be held across the Shire with worldclass performers from across the southern hemisphere, including the internationally acclaimed New Zealand String Quartet.

That event will host rural Australia’s fi rst-ever live and digital immersive commemorative concert.

Sunday’s final experience titled ‘Lest We Forget Commemoration Concert’ is rural Australia’s first immersive live and digital commemoration concert paying tribute to the sacrifice and service of rural men and women. The concert includes the first regional performance of FS Kelly’s Elegy: In Memoriam Rupert Brooke.

“It’s going to be very, very special,” Frances believes.

“A lot of people in Dubbo haven’t seen the Warren Art Gallery and Museum; but it is truly the most remarkable space to walk into.”

“There is no other venue like this in regional Australia. That is how special this building is.”

About the Warren Chamber Music Festival FRANCES herself is an accomplished violinist, educator, and collaborator residing on her family’s sheep and cattle property at Warren.

Alongside her, Phil Leman, Dr John Burke, Marieanne Noonan, and Rod Sandell make-up the brains trust behind the festival.

Frances studied violin and piano from a young age, her parents travelling over 200 kilometres fortnightly to Narromine and Dubbo for lessons.

After a varied musical career taking her across Australia, she returned to Warren to run her family sheep and cattle property with her parents and husband Nick, a talented clarinet player.

Held at the start of May, the Warren Chamber Music Festival will begin with the first concert at the GBS Falkiner Lounge, Warren Racecourse.

This is a marquee event which includes a four-course meal paired with Huntington Estate wines complimented with a full bar service,

presented alongside a curated program of music to match the culinary journey.

It is also the fi rst of three consecutive evening concerts, the next two at Nevertire Memorial Hall and Collie CWA Hall.

The 2025 Warren Chamber Music Festival wraps up with the fourth and final concert, a daytime event, at the Warren Museum and Art Gallery.

The Warren Chamber Music Festival (WCMF) relies on sponsorships and grants to operate.

One key fi nancial benefit was a grant from the Fund for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) and many varied sponsors.

The event’s origins stemmed from when some people in Warren discovered Frances and Nick’s musical backgrounds and simply put the question to them, about whether a classical music festival could be staged in Warren.

Who is coming?

MUSICIANS from Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney symphony orchestras will also perform across the four shows along with a few members of New Zealand’s counterpart.

The New Zealand String Quartet is the headline group attending.

“This festival is really a celebration of players from right across the southern hemisphere,” Frances said.

Renowned Australian composer Anne Cawrse has written a new work for the festival which will have its world premiere at Nevertire.

It is the fi rst time a piece of music in Australia has been commissioned specifically for that ensemble (clarinet quartet and chamber orchestra).

The SING Warren Community Choir will perform an arrangement of the English ballad Scarborough Fair, made famous by Simon and Garfunkel, and also John Lennon’s Imagine in conjunction with the festival chamber orchestra.

“Expect the unexpected at these concerts,” Frances said.

“You step foot into the most amazing atmosphere; some of the works that have been performed this year have just never been performed by ensemble of the standard in regional New South Wales .

“I can’t say that lightly because there is fantastic quality music that comes out to Dubbo and the regional conservatoriums, but this again truly is a unique experience and a unique event,” she concluded.

Money for Warren Chamber Fest to help support arts in the bush WARREN’S upcoming chamber music festival is one of five local projects that Outback Arts have announced as successful applicants for the 2025 Country Arts Support program.

Outback Arts said an exciting number of creative and cultural projects will be popping up all over the region with the announcement of the successful recipients for the Country Arts Support Program (CASP) to be delivered throughout 2025.

A total of $14,000 has been awarded to five projects within the Outback Arts region to support community arts and cultural development.

The successful applicants include Nyngan Art Group and Nyngan Christmas Committee along with a project by young Wangaaypuwan/Ngiyambaa and Wiradjuri artist and cultural educator Maddy Hope-Hodgetts, who will hold a cultural women’s weaving workshop on Country along the Bogan River.

Warren is represented by the Warren Chamber Music Festival which will be held early next month.

Outback Arts executive director Jamie-Lea Trindall said her organisation looks forward to seeing these projects develop across the coming year, “CASP is a significant investment by Outback Arts with support of Create NSW to provide funds directly to regional areas,” she said.

It is a great initiative that allows regional communities and local people with an opportunity to create and realise their own arts and culture projects.

Outback Arts are looking forward to seeing these projects develop over the coming year.”

Successful recipients are: Museum Memories, Nyngan Art Group ($2000). The museum would like a large mural to be done and situated behind the welcome desk at the Museum. It would be a collection of memories and facts associated with the town and the history of the museum of how and when it opened.

Ngibi Bungganga, Maddy Hope-Hodgetts ($3000). Ngibi Bungganga (Weaving on ‘Bogan’ River) — will be Cultural Women’s weaving workshop on Country. The workshop will share traditional basket weaving knowledge and skills, while participates will be able to create their own basket or dilly bag. While also learning about using native grasses and connecting to Country.

Be Inspired, Warren Chamber Music Festival Incorporated ($3000): The WCMF will facilitate four concerts in iconic halls across the Warren Shire, present a schools touring program, and provide a handson workshop with Australia’s most celebrated living Luthier at the Warren Men’s Shed.

The final concert will be rural Australia’s first live and digital immersive commemoration concert.

Nyngan Community Christmas, Nyngan Christmas Committee ($3000): A Christmas party for the town and sounds including children’s entertainment (all free - arts and crafts, face painting, inf latables, character visits and gifts) market stalls and exhibitions, live music, ham wheels and raff les for club fundraising. We engage with community groups to help them raise funds for their clubs.

Yuga-li Mayrra — Celebrate Little Girl, Lorraine King ($3000): The Yuga-li Mayrra project is focussed on giving up to eight young Indigenous girls the opportunity to be part of a two-day workshop in Coonamble. The aim is to build self-confidence, share stories, encourage cultural connections within the community and engage them into the creative arts scene.

This funding program by Create NSW is well established and provides regional people access to a diverse range of cultural programs each year and brings local opportunities that may otherwise have not been available.

NSW Government assures farmers, we’re listening on wetlands issue WITH water-use by primary producers an ongoing political battle in western NSW, the State Government has claimed that it is now listening to valuable community feedback on the issue.

By revising wetland mapping in six unregulated water sharing plans, it claims to have finalised an approach to ensure maps are accurate and fit-for-purpose moving forward.

The rules proposed for the water sharing plans aim to improve protection for significant wetlands and apply to new or amended water supply works and trades in certain wetlands. This is to ensure that no further water supply demand is placed on those wetlands beyond current levels.

Since last November, hundreds of residents, landholders and stakeholder groups have

shared their local knowledge and expertise and voiced concerns over anomalies in the maps of prescribed wetlands in the draft Gwydir, Namoi-Peel, Macquarie/Wambuul-Bogan, Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Barwon-Darling unregulated water sharing plans.

“I want to thank the community for their insight and patience while we’ve been working tirelessly to get these wetland areas right,” NSW DCCEEW Executive Director of Water Planning, Giselle Howard, said.

“We want water sharing plans that work well for everyone, and it’s been heartening to see so many people engage with us throughout the process,” she added.

She said that the Government had heard from many locals on the ground, including farmers, landholders and

stakeholders who have been very generous with their time and expertise.

“Their feedback has been instrumental in helping us update the mapping, and we’re committed to continuing to engage with them over the next year so that everyone can be certain that only appropriate wetland sites are included.

“These water sharing plans are vital for managing the regions’ water resources, and including wetland protections is a key part of safeguarding these unique and important environmental assets, and the animals, plants and ecosystems that rely on them,” Ms Howard said.

Last month, the Government released revised maps and held an additional three-week consultation period inviting the community to give feedback on the updates.

This process has played a critical role in shaping the way the NSW government will manage the wetlands process.

In the fi nalised water sharing plans, which will come into effect by July 2025, prescribed wetland areas will be limited to internationally significant Ramsar listed sites, areas registered in the Directory of Important Wetlands of Australia, and any wetlands already receiving protection in the current water sharing plans, as these are sites that are already formally recognised.

Across the next 12 months, the Government will continue to consult with landholders and the community on other wetlands identified in the revised maps to ensure that we are getting these sites right.

The water sharing plans will then be amended before June 2026 to add wetlands from that

group that have been looked at in close detail.

This approach will provide the community with confidence and peace of mind that prescribed wetland areas are accurate and appropriate.

We will also be revisiting the wetland maps in six additional unregulated plans that came into effect in July 2024 with additional community consultation scheduled for the second half of 2025.

These are the intersecting streams, Border Rivers, Castlereagh, Murray, Lower Murray Darling, and North Western unregulated water sharing plans.

All water sharing plans are independently audited after the fi rst five years to ensure they are working effectively and appropriately.

Deal is sealed for Australia’s first Renewable Energy Zone AUSTRALIA’S fi rst declared Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) will formally commence construction within months after the NSW government awarded ACEREZ the contract and reached fi nancial close to deliver the Central-West Orana REZ transmission project on Friday, April 4.

This landmark project will establish critical infrastructure that will connect solar and wind farms and energy storage to the NSW electricity grid.

EnergyCo has appointed ACEREZ – a consortium of ACCIONA, COBRA, and Endeavour Energy – to design, build and fi nance the Central-West Orana REZ transmission project and operate and maintain it for the next 35 years.

The project will deliver at least 4.5 gigawatts of new network capacity by 2028, to connect 7.7 gigawatts of wind and solar projects, which is enough to power more than two million homes each year.

It will generate a significant economic boost in the Central-West Orana region and NSW as a whole, supporting more than 5,000 construction jobs at its peak and bringing $20 billion in private investment into the region by 2030.

This milestone of reaching contract follows a robust procurement process

overseen by the Australian Energy Regulator.

Early works on the project started in February, and construction is scheduled to start mid-year.

The NSW government is investing $128 million in communities which will host the Central-West Orana REZ, through grants for councils as well as community and First Nations groups and projects.

“Getting this deal done brings us closer to delivering more affordable and reliable renewable energy to NSW households and businesses,” minister for climate change and energy, Penny Sharpe, said.

“With three out of four of the state’s remaining coalfi red power stations set to close in less than 10 years, this Renewable Energy Zone will help us meet our future energy needs in order to keep the lights on and avoid price spikes.

“The project will also inject billions of dollars in private investment into the Central-West Orana region by 2030, along with thousands of jobs and opportunities for local suppliers.”

The state’s first REZ is in the Central-West Orana region, centred by Dubbo and Dunedoo. It also takes in cities and towns including Gulgong, Mudgee, Wellington.

Business NSW believes insurance premiums are spiralling out of control

By STAFF REPORTERS THE state’s peak business body warns insurance premiums are spiralling out of control, with 85 per cent of businesses in Western NSW reporting double-digit increases over the past year.

Business NSW’s latest quarterly Business Conditions Survey reveals a staggering one in three businesses saw premiums rise by 30 per cent or more — well above the 2.5 per cent inflation rate for the year to January.

rector for Western NSW, Vicki Seccombe, said businesses are fed up with having the highest-taxed insurance premiums in mainland Australia.

“The NSW government is collecting more than ever through the Emergency Services Levy (ESL) and stamp duty,” Ms Seccombe said.

“This leaves businesses either to either foot the bill or simply go without insurance and hope for the best. Many others have been flat-out rejected by insurance companies.

Alarmingly, a December survey of Business NSW members

found that 64 per cent of respondents were not fully insured against catastrophic events.

This leaves businesses exposed and underscores the urgent need for systemic reform.

Ms Seccombe said insurance premiums have been the top financial concern for businesses for nearly two years.

“The state and federal governments need to step up and do something now,” Ms Seccombe said.

“Businesses are struggling because of rising premiums, and it’s simply unsustainable.

“Many Western NSW business-

es now find themselves either uninsurable or unable to afford the soaring cost of insurance.

“You can’t run a business when your premiums increase by 30 per cent or more in a year.”

Other localised fi ndings from the Business Conditions Survey include we are seeing green shoots locally and across NSW, with the Business Confidence Index rising to -44.7 for the March quarter of 2025, the highest reading in almost three years.

Across Western NSW, 75 per cent of Western NSW businesses plan to maintain the

same headcount or hire additional staff.

The Business Conditions Survey also found more businesses are investing in technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost productivity, more businesses are now view regulatory requirements as excessive, and key factors that would boost Western NSW business confidence in 2025 include further interest rate cuts, slowing inflation, easier access to skilled workers and more domestic visitors.

Local Profile: Ruth Hunt

Ruth explained to the Warren Star, that in the remote village of Mindetta where she was raised, life revolved around the railway station and the daily train.

I was born in 1932 in Nyngan. My family lived in [the nearby village of] Minandetta where I attended the local little 12-pupil school. We had a lot of fun going to meet the train everyday that went through to Cobar. Everyday, we would meet the train and sing a song for the station master and receive a sweet then go back to school. In those days, the train was there for a long time, because there was so much stuff to be loaded off and on. [Residents] had no means of getting it [provisions] otherwise. Because there was no other decent transport going through in those days, all of the roads were gravel, even the [now highway] to Cobar.

Minandetta consisted of about four homes. I think two belonged to the gangers (persons overseeing railway maintenance crew), and the other one was the post office, [which doubled as the post masters residence] it was a very long home- they had a big family.

The main industry was the railway. Fettlers maintained the railway tracks. We didn’t have much to do with fettlers.

A lot of them lived in tents and went back to Nyngan at the weekend. They went off on their railways tikes of a morning to check the tracks.

They’d push backwards and forwards to move along the railways line.

Being so remote Ruth and the residents were enmeshed in a dynamic of give-and-take with nature and the elements.

Minandetta was full of goats.

I still hate the smell of goats; though a lot of people lived on goat milk and meat. They were feral but pretty quiet, but we didn’t like them, particularly because they were smelly things. I remember one day when the fettlers left bags of potatoes in their tents, and the goats got in and ate all their potatoes. During wet weather, we had a terrible time with the smell of them, as mobs of them would camp under the awning of our school.

The primary school teacher was very nice, we only had one at school. They boarded with our family. We lived out on a property where my father ran [a mixed farming operation].

I had a brother who was four years older, he was away a lot though at school in Dubbo and later Sydney, so I saw him in school holidays, but he was a lot older so wasn’t terribly interested in me!

Living on a farm, the swaggies would come visit the house, they were harmless, but I was just frightened of them, I’d get under the bed and they’d come up to the [home-

My Dad’s step-mother taught me many things, particularly about gardening. She’d say: “Child, you must learn the names of the flowers” I got my love of gardening from her.

She also taught me crocheting and knitting. We’d knit scarves for the soldiers away at war.

She also taught me the fi ner points of life, like what a young woman should do.

I was very young and didn’t quite understand why yet, but I recall the soldiers being sent away. You just got a sense [at the time] that something was happening, and i asked my parents. I knew a lot of the young chaps, because they were playing social tennis and similar things in the community before they enlisted. Later they [the community] started holding the fi rst “Welcome Home” party for the soldiers

at the local hall, then I realised some of them hadn’t come back. I remember clearly all the soldiers that went to war and that were killed. I’d know them if they walked in now.

It was a nice hall, big crowds of people came to the Welcome Home parties and there was dancing and food. I can remember Mum and some of the women making a big fruit cake. One woman from Nyngan iced-up a cake in in the form of a cathedral, it was beautiful, she did a lot of interesting icing of cakes.

I left school in 1947, I think i was about 17 or 18. I wanted to do hair-dressing because my aunt was a hair-dresser and I learnt a lot from her. I loved messing about with hair. She was working in Sydney, but Dad said: “you’re not going down there and going to walk through The Cross” (Sydney’s Kings Cross); it had a pretty wild reputation then, “the Cross”. So I looked after local children instead, neighbours children mainly

We messed around, we socialised at a lot at parties and tennis. [career-wise] the only things that young ones did in those days, was nursing or a business course or went off to Sydney.

I was married when I had just turned 25, and that was [considered] late those days.

Same with having babies, i was nearly 29 when I had my fi rst baby and the nurses said: “Oh, you’re too old to have babies now. You should have had them years ago” . I moved to Neverire when I was married and raised a family; I lost a couple of children, but I still have my son Bruce. His family live out at Orange; my great, great, grandchildren lived down there too.

Ruth enjoyed many trips aboard over the course of her lifetime, experiencing many cultures across all corners of the globe.

The fi rst time I went traveling, I was 21, I went on the

fi rst of many trips with my cousin, Pam. On our fi rst trip, we went to New Zealand. Pam and I were keen to do something different. We had another friend with us, she sat down in the middle of the floor and emptied all the clothes out on the floor, Pam and I looked at one another. [Then it transpired that] she was never ready in time and we were always ready to go. Anyway after that, we decided to experience travelling a little with other people before going on long trips with them — as she wouldn’t have been a good traveling companion! After New Zealand, we went to the Pacific Islands, then up to Bangkok, it was quite well developed by then.

Then we took the big step of going to the UK and we were there for three months. We went up to Scotland and then over to Ireland and we didn’t get back down to the lower part of UK, despite saying we’d come back and see that, but we didn’t ever do that.

Later after we were married, Pam and I backpacked around the European continent. That [suited us because it] kept your hands free, we could easily take-out bits and pieces, primers and maps. But it was so big [ the back-pack] that my travelling companions had to push me up onto the trains. We were travelling for probably three months, I think.

The husbands wouldn’t come, we didn’t want them there, they’d have been a nuisance anyway.

I loved Italy particularly, I celebrated my 50th birthday there at an Italian villa — I had this most beautiful dessert there that I still think about.

Then in later years, I went to America and spent some time there and stayed with some distant relatives of Pam’s over there. We started meeting-up with people in America, some different friends involved in the Americas Cup Race and, later, I went back to America. I stayed with my husband’s best man and his wife.

They were living over there and said: “Come on over. and have a couple of weeks with us” which I did, staying at Newport, Rhode Island where Jacqui and President Kennedy were wed. It’s lovely, it’s a gorgeous place. Then I stayed with friends over the other side of America for a few more weeks in Seattle where the sun rarely shines. I had nine cloudy days and only one day it was sunny.

Then I returned to Australia,I was in my 50’s or 60’s by then. I went and bought a house in Warren and stayed there for 30 years until I went into Calara House/longstay.

During that time, I practiced yoga, enjoyed gardening, and watching horse-racing —the latter of which I still enjoy today!

She emphasised that visitors to regional towns are often looking for more than just attractions, they’re also seeking authentic interaction and warmth.

“They want to know what it’s like to live here, and we get to show them the heart of the town, not just its highlights,” Ms Balogh emphasised.

“Our visitors want to know our locals and understand their way of life” she added.

During her address, Susie shared exciting updates from the Warren Visitor Information Centre, which has recently undergone a transforma-

tion. She acknowledged the centre’s modest size compared to neighbouring towns like Condobolin and Gilgandra, but proudly noted that: “while they may have the flash, we have the heart.”

The Centre now features beautiful local signage, multimedia displays, and warm, personal service.

Susie also spoke about the success of the newly-launched “Discover Warren” brochure, which has been described as a “visual love letter to Warren,” and is already being shared across the country and with visitors to events such as the Warren Chamber Music Festival.

She also introduced the upcoming Discover Warren website, a digital hub designed to support both locals and visitors by promoting events, services, and everyday information in a single,

Another highlight of the presentation was the Connecting Seniors Program, a grant-funded partnership between the Warren Library and the Visitor Information Centre. The initiative supports senior wellbeing and community inclusion through two main components: f Mental Vitality — A new “Tovatafel” interactive game machine at the library designed to keep minds sharp through play. f Community Legacy and Visitor Engagement — Activities led by the Visitor Centre, including “Pen Pals with Purpose” featuring postcards written by seniors to welcome and connect with tourists; and “Local Voices” involving audio stories, memories, and reflections to be featured in the Centre and compiled into a souvenir book.

“Whether it’s writing a postcard over a cup of tea, or recording a short story from your past, you’re helping shape the experience of every visitor who walks through our doors,” Suzie explained.

The speech also introduced another major regional initiative led by Susie — the Country Heartline project — a tourism-based drought resilience strategy developed in partnership with Bogan and Coonamble Shire councils.

With the Macquarie Marshes at the centre, the initiative aims to drive visitation to the region, support local businesses, and provide onfarm income diversification through farm stays, tours, and produce experiences.

With just six months to deliver the project, Susie acknowledged the challenges ahead, but expressed deep gratitude for the support of her small but dedicated team at the Centre.

In closing, she acknowledged the View Club’s continuing role in community life.

“Thank-you for being vital; for being the glue that holds this town together; for sharing your stories, and for keeping the heart in the country,” Ms Balogh said.

“If we all stay connected, who knows what we can achieve together, and for Warren?” she concluded.

The Warren View Club thanked Susie for her generous, spirited, and inspiring presentation and wishes her every success as she continues working to keep Warren thriving.

By WARREN SQUASH CLUB AFTER another enjoyable squash competition involving players from all ages, winners this season were team ‘Canterbury’, composed of Marcus Markgraff, Trent O’Hara, Joey Walker and Nicole Mckay . Well done team ‘Canterbury’!

The club would like to extend a big thank you to local retailer ‘Brads wear’ for sponsoring this latest competition. The next one will start the second week back at school. Veteran players and new players alike are most welcome. Golfing combination forged on Warren course, wins State title

By DALLAS REEVES A GOLFING combination forged on our very own Warren course has come up trumps in a recent Championship event in the State’s west.

Local James Taylor and former Warren golfer, Billy Brigden, have often been rivals as two of the town’s leading golfers. Now the pair have teamed-up to win the Golf NSW Sand Greens Fourball Championships (4BBB) state title at Cobar Golf Club.

After holding the lead over Stonecutters Ridge duo, Allan Ison and Ryan Cadle, after the first round on Saturday, April 12, Golf NSW reported Brigden and Taylor shot a very solid 39 points on day two on Sunday to win the tournament by two points.

The pair’s scoring was amazing across both days for the Stableford event with Taylor and Brigden collecting a combined 42 points on the first day, before finishing with 39 for a total of 81 points.

Taylor accumulated 26 points on day one and 16 on day two, while Brigden picked-up 16 points on day one and 23 on day two.

Across the two days, the pair recorded just 65 strokes on day one, and 68 on day two.

Although Brigden now plays at the prestigious Duntryleague Golf Club in Orange; their combination was forged at Warren with the pair enjoying the trip west to compete at the highest level.

“This was our first time back to Cobar in years, and we will be back in a heartbeat,” the pair told Golf NSW after the win.

Taylor spoke with the Warren Star yesterday and said the golfing pair have been friends for more than 10 years.

The pair have both won multiple individual A-grade club championships at Warren, where Taylor still plays.

“We were pretty competitive with each other in Warren,” Taylor explained.

“There was an option to give him a call and see him if he wanted to play and he jumped at it.”

The pair were brilliant both days, with the exceptional day one scoring coming down to sinking more putts.

“We played well again on the second day and combined well together,” Taylor said.

At Cobar, Taylor was playing off plus-one and Brigden was a “scratch marker”.

Taylor is off a handicap of two at Warren, while Brigden is currently off four at Duntryleague.

Taylor, 39, has always enjoyed golf, but rugby league took priority in his younger days.

However, after four knee reconstructions, he gave contact sport away.

He was off 15 at 26, but by 30

achieved the coveted scratch marker status (zero handicap) for the first time.

“It was a great game to fall back on,” Taylor said of golf. “I’ve always loved it and always intended to pick it back up.”

Taylor has had two second-placings previously at this state fourball event with Dean Leach, but this was his first success.

The event was an excellent warm-up for next week’s Warren Legends Pro-Am at Warren Golf Club which will feature Peter Lonard as special guest.

Brigden is a past individual NSW Sand Greens Open Champion (2019 and 2020) while playing at Warren Golf Club.

The Warren duo defeated Narromine pair Craig Duff and Kale Bock (79 points) after that combination had scores of 39 and 40 to finish second. Manildra’s Marc Williams and Mitchell Gibson (38, 40; 78) were in third place.

Narromine golfers did well with Robert Williams and Tony Mann (37, 40; 77) finishing in a four-way tie for fourth place.

It was a successful weekend also for Nyngan golfers in the nett (handicap) category.

Nyngan Golf Club’s Andy Lane and Jamie Barrow were named the nett winners, being handed the inaugural Bruce Reynolds Trophy.

Lane and Barrow had a great score of 91 points, earning 43 points on day one and then 48 points on day two for a two-shot win.

Fellow Nyngan GC golfers Ashton Deebank and Mitchell Williams (40, 48; 88) were in a twoway tie for fourth while George Bennett and Rod Herbert (40,44; 84) finished 10th.

“It was a fantastic weekend, Cobar looked after us really well,” Taylor said. “It is a great club and a great course.”

Footy’s back in Warren, with goals achievable ahead of comp opener

By DALLAS REEVES THERE is a buzz around Warren with the return of the Bulldogs who are set to play their fi rst competition match in the Castlereagh Rugby League in more than eight years on Saturday.

With the re-birth of senior rugby league in the town, Warren will host its fi rst competition matches when the Bulldogs take-on Cobar in Round One at Victoria Oval.

This will be the fi rst competition match the men’s side has played since 2016, and the fi rst for the Ladies League Tag team, since 2017.

The Bulldogs have already been at home for a trial match against Narromine in mid-on March before hosting the Castlereagh Rugby League Men’s Knockout in the second weekend of April.

Results have been encouraging, despite the club still being on the lookout for its fi rst win. However, when that

victory comes, it will be even sweeter for being in a competition fi xture, President Brett Brouff, believes.

“It’s been a great learning experience,” Brouff said.

“Everything is on track… players are happy, everything is progressing well,” he added.

In the trial against Narromine, the men’s side went down 34-4 to a Jets side that fi nished third last year.

At the Castlereagh League knockout, Warrant went down 12-6 to Coonamble in a thriller before having a 12-all draw with Coonabarabran in the consolation semi-fi nal, being eliminated as the Unicorns scored the fi rst try.

The Ladies League Tag side story is similar. Warren went down 48-6 to defending premiers Narromine in March and then travelled to the knockout at Baradine on April 5, losing 4-nil to Gulgong and then 6-4 to Coonamble in the consolation semi-fi nal.

Brouff said player numbers

are strong, with around 40 registered players and training numbers regularly in the 20s for the men’s tackle side.

The Ladies League Tag side, being coached by Peter Mackay, are also looking solid for 2025. Interestingly, the last season the Warren ladies played (2017), they won the competition.

Brouff added the experience of already hosting trial matches and the men’s knockout this season has the club well-prepared for this year.

“It’s nice to host a knockout and to look at all the other teams for the year,” he said.

“I think we will be pretty competitive this year, which is a great thing for our fi rst year back in the competition.”

Brouff admitted Warren had a close look at Cobar at the knockout.

The Roosters, who lost last year’s men’s grand fi nal to 2024 premiers and 2025 men’s knockout winners Coolah, defeated Gulgong 6-nil before go-

ing down to Coolah 14-nil.

“It will be a good day for both our sides,” Brouff said.

“It will be tough … Cobar have a good side … our sides are looking forward to it.”

The president added several players stood-out across various positions and that the Warren sides have good cohesion and construct attacking sets of six tackles well with a variety of moves and plays.

But for Warren, the key goal of Saturday is a big crowd to watch and building for 2025, just as at the trial and knockout.

“Both events had massive crowds,” he said.

“People are excited to see the kick-off for the Bulldogs for the year. We’re projecting a similar crowd.

“The oval was packed all the way around and the fi rst trial against Narromine, the crowd was nearly as good.

“I would dare say we will have plenty of support on the day … especially Cobar

fi rst-up.”

He said interest has been strong within the Warren community and also from ex-residents.

“I’ve had phone calls from people in Port Macquarie, Dubbo, Bathurst that are interested in getting back for a few games,” Brouff said.

As such, the key in 2025 is to build a stable base for growth in future seasons.

“It’s a building year, fi rst year back in,” he said.

“If we get a few (wins) here and there we’re going to be really happy, and we’re going to be happy anyway.

“We just need to get things back on the road.

“It’s just great for country rugby league to have small towns and communities playing,” Brouff said.

“We’re very happy that we were allowed back into the competition for this year,” he concluded.

Raced at Bourke on Sunday, April 20 HAMMOON Thunder, the last start winner of the Hillston Cup, backed up to win the Picnic Cup before a very big crowd on Easter Sunday at Bourke.

Owned by Paul and Bindi Frampton from Merriwa, Hammoon Thunder finished fourth in the 2400 metres Iron Horse Handicap at the Wellington Boot carnival before being transferred to Rodney Robb who has won the only two starts with the five year old gelding.

Chapel Lane led the Cup field at Bourke while Hammoon Thunder ($3) carrying the 71 kilogram top weight raced in a handy position before fi nishing gamely to beat Mrs Bull (Leandro Ribeiro, $2 favourite) by almost a length with Blackhill Kitty (Todd Bailey, $3.80) four lengths away third.

Cup winning jockey Paul Zerafa had won the opening race,

the 800 metres Sleepy and J.D. Dwyer Memorial Maiden Plate on the Benno Bowen, Queensland trained Kraken Edition.

Kraken Edition had been supported in the betting ring with a sizeable wager at $26 before starting at $11 and after settling back in the field gained an inside run to score by a half-length from Coonanglebah (Leandro Ribeiro, $3.20 favourite) and Monkey Rat (Zara Lewis, $4).

Mr Pointer won a maiden handicap at Grafton in 2021 and after being winless at more than 20 subsequent starts was sold to Wayne Prisk and Butch Eves from Cobar.

Trained by Wayne Prisk, Mr Pointer has won a further eight races including successive wins at the 2023, 2024 and 2025 annual Bourke Picnics.

After racing outside the leader on Sunday in the 800 metres Bourke Bowling Club Open Trophy Handicap, Mr Pointer (Tamsin Gough, $2.50 favourite) was too good for Sussu (Zara Lewis, $4) and Mr Invincible (Emily Waters, $11).

Forbes trainer Bill Hayes who won several races at King Island, Tasmania over summer had a defi nite change of scenery when winning the 1300 metres THM Earthmoving and Hire Class 1 Trophy Handicap at Bourke with Advertimento.

Establishing a five lengths lead with Parnassus, Advertimento (Todd Bailey, $13) in a tough performance kept going to win by nearly two lengths from The Drafter (Ashley Boyd, $3.50) and Dancedes (Leandro Ribeiro, $4).

Todd Bailey completed a double when the Connie Greig trained Benyatta ($6) suited by the fast pace set by Conquest, fi nished best to account for Nannu (Paul Zerafa, $2 favourite) and Celtic Harp (Leandro Ribeiro, $3.80) in the 1300 metres Outback Ice and Outback Refrigeration 1300 metres Open Trophy Handicap.

At Baradine the Pink Panthers will fly the Gilgandra flag against the Baradine Magpies.

By BRYSON LUFF A HUGE crowd is expected to pack into Coolah’s Bowen Oval this Saturday to watch the action between the Kangaroos and the Narromine Jets in the opening round of the 2025 Christie and Hood Castlereagh League competition.

The home side will also be out to retain the Boronia Cup — in what will be their sixth defence of the time-honoured piece of silverware — and to extend its unbeaten record from 2024 on the ground, as well as get its 2024 premiership defence underway in a positive fashion.

Whilst not too much can be written into pre-season knockout form, the ‘Roos looked impressive in claiming back-toback Castlereagh shields a fortnight ago at Warren, scoring 56 points in their three games and only having six scored against them.

The Jets opted not to play in the knockout, instead hosting a trial game at Narromine, and they are an unknown quantity going into the 2025 season.

Most certainly, though, they will be out to erase the memory of their last trip to Bowen Oval which saw the curtain come down on their 2024 season with a 28-10 loss to the ‘Roos in last year’s prelimi-

nary fi nal.

The League Tag fi xture between the Coolah Flyers and the Jets should also be an intriguing game as it is a replay of the 2024 Grand Final which was a a high-quality and close tussle between the two top sides, with the Jets coming-away with the premiership after claiming a hard-fought 14-10 victory.

Warren’s Victoria Park is also expected to be jam-packed

when the Warren Bulldogs make their return to the playing field after an extended absence. If the hometown support shown for the Doggies at the recent Castlereagh knockout at the same ground is anything to go by, then the Cobar Roosters can expect a loud and boisterous reception.

Though the home ground will certainly be an advantage for the Bulldogs, they are up against a top-shelf Cobar side

that was beaten in last year’s grand fi nal and one that will be out to make a statement about their intentions to go one better in 2025.

Other games will be played at Coonamble, Coonabarabran, and Baradine. At Coonamble, the Bears will play host to the resurgent Dunedoo Swans.

The Grizzlies are always a tough nut to crack at home, but the Swans would be buoyed by

Coolah versus Narromine, Warren versus Cobar, Coonamble versus Dunedoo, Coonabarabran versus Gulgong, Baradine versus Gilgandra.

By THE DIRTY BIRDIE BEAUTIFUL weather, great company, an immaculate course, and wonderful trophies to vie, for were the main drawcards for a total of 10 ladies playing golf at the Warren course on Wednesday.

They competed in an 18-Hole Stableford with the day sponsored by Wooly’s Bottle Shop.

It is so good also to see our new golfers, Lisa, Jamie, and Wendy, turning-up regularly and playing outstanding golf.

The results ended up being very tight with four ladies all scoring 34 points. The winner, on a count-back, was Wendy Robinson, second place to Heather Druce, third to Chris Tilley, and fourth place was Jamie Boyd, with golf balls to

Saturday was the Cole-Kentwell Charity Shield with teams of three playing nine holes of golf plus 10 ends of bowls. There were a total of 12 teams with 36 players who turned-up for a day of fun, laughs, and mateship.

It certainly was a special day of sunshine, reflection, and friendly competition as we honoured the memory of much- loved mates, Ken Cole and Clarrie Kentwell.

This annual event celebrates their lives and lasting legacy through the perpetual trophy proudly played for on the day.

Unfortunately, the trophy itself, was still in Greg’s ute!

It was all about community, connection, and fun, whether they were swinging a golf club, rolling a bowl, or simply soaking in the atmosphere.

There was plenty of action on the greens, heaps of raffles, a putting competition, and good company all-round.

It was great to be part of a tradition that keeps the spirit of these two legends alive.
