By TESS VAN LUBECK HIGHLIGHTING our multicultural diversity, Harmony Day was celebrated in Warren last Friday with many local organisations taking part in this unique commemoration. Originally to be hosted by the Warren Youth Centre, the event was eventually moved to Warren Central School after rain made the centre’s outdoor venue untenable. Harmony Day is an annual

celebration of Australia’s rich cultural diversity and the benefits it brings to our nation. The initiative has been running since 1999 and, according to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, reflects that after “65,000 years of First Nations’ cultures, Australia has become home to migrants from nearly 300 different ancestries. Australia’s immigration history has helped build our modern nation.” Each year the day in-

mony Day was “Everyone Belongs”, which was demonstrated at the Warren event by a pot luck-style feast with meals representing the different cultures of the world. Dishes prepared by community organisations for Harmony Day included quiche, Johnny cakes, and fried scones cooked by local Elder, Barb Stanley of CatholicCare. Other food included party pies, Australian and Chinese fried rice cooked by Mission

Australia; hot dogs and Eierkuchen (German pancakes), popular in Germany and the United States, prepared by Barnardos; and tacos and frittatas, popular with Mexicans and Italians, made by Warren Youth Centre. Lastly, Warren Central School made flat breads and dips. “Thankyou to everyone who organised, cooked and celebrated Harmony Day 2025,” an event spokesperson said. More photos page 11
