Inland Rail THERE was no announcement for additional funding or progress of the Inland Rail project from Narrabri to Narromine.

However, the Albanese Government says work continues to progress the delivery of Inland Rail, with sections between Beveridge in Victoria and Parkes in NSW to be completed in 2027, and design and approvals work underway between Parkes and Ebenezer in Queensland.

Dolly Festival headliner a finalist in “Search For Dolly” quest

By SHARON BONTHUYS THE international tribute performer who headlined the second Dolly Parton Festival in Narromine in September 2023 is in the running for a role in a musical about the iconic country singer’s life, due to rock Nashville, Tennessee, in July.

UK-based, South Australian-born Kelly O’Brien threw her hat into the ring when the US casting search was announced last December, and put 18 years’ experience impersonating the undisputed Queen of Country to the test — with tremendous results.

Kelly is the only non-US competitor in the fi fteen performers chosen as fi nalists in “The Search For Dolly” — and she’s pretty stoked about it.

“It’s really special,” she told this masthead.

“For Dolly’s team, and maybe Dolly herself to say, ‘Yeah, we want you to audition for the musical to potentially play one of the roles,’ it’s quite amazing,” she said.

Kelly didn’t let a little thing like 5600 kilometres of Atlantic Ocean between herself and the east coast of the USA stop her. The talented songstress, a seasoned musical star who has been performing as Dolly Parton since 2007, joined countless others in uploading to social media a video of her singing her favourite Dolly song — the classic “Here You Come Again”. She submitted a second song “Blue Smoke”, with her audition reportedly going viral. A third video was the Parton classic “Jolene”.

She was thrilled to make the fi nal 15 performers chosen to audition in New York for a role in the new musical.

Kelly was touring and unable to make it across The Pond for the New York auditions, and submitted a tape in lieu, she said.

Dolly Parton tribute artist Kelly O’Brien is a finalist in “The Search For Dolly”, seeking roles to play the iconic singer at different stages in her life.

From page 1 “I was in Denmark when I got the news, and I was in the middle of touring myself,” she explained.

The musical will have its world premiere at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville on July 18 and run through until August 17 this year.

What is known about the musical at this time is that it will feature a score by Dolly Parton including some of her biggest hits, as well as new songs she has written especially for it. There will also be a book

by Dolly and Maria S. Schlatter, and the musical will be directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher.

“The run is in Nashville fi rst, and then it will cross over to Broadway next year,” Kelly said.

At this stage, no further information is publicly available about which performers have been chosen for the roles in the musical, but this is expected to be announced soon. It is also not known what impact the unexpected passing on March 3 of Dolly Parton’s much-loved husband of 59 years, Carl Dean, may have on plans to stage the musical in July as planned.

“The Dolly Show” was the headline act and Kelly literally walks, talks, dresses, looks and sings just like the real Dolly Parton in her show. She is also very similar in height to the real Dolly.

This journalist has been following Kelly since that time, and was most excited to hear about her making it through to the fi nals of “The Search For Dolly.

“I started singing country when I was very young, and I was entering a lot of competitions singing country music,” she said of her journey to become the ultimate Dolly Parton tribute artist.

“My parents would play her records at home, so I grew up listening to her. And also I’m as small as she is!” Kelly added.

“I just loved the glamour of her, you know, the hair, the costumes, the demands, the tassels. She’s beautiful to look at, but beautiful on the inside as well.”

A very busy performer, Kelly is currently in Australia touring with The Dolly Show at locations in NSW including Tuncurry, Newcastle, Liverpool, Wollongong, Penrith, Kingsford and Chatswood. Her Australian tour finishes on April 5-6 with performances at The Princess Theatre in Brisbane and Twin Towns in Tweed Heads. Central west links WHILE she lives with her husband, award-winning poet Ben Verinder, and children Oscar and Amber, in rural Hertfordshire north-west of London, an area of England immortalised in Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice”, Kelly, who celebrated her 50th birthday not that long ago, has strong links to central west NSW. Her father was born in Nyngan and extended family still live in the area.

At just 16, two years after she began singing country, Kelly was crowned South Australian Country Vocalist of the Year and Best New Talent at the Gympie Music Muster.

She headlined the German production of “Starlight Express” in 2002 and performed in West End productions in the UK before deciding to bring the joy of Dolly Parton to appreciative audiences in 2007. She certainly wowed local audiences at the Dolly Parton Festival in 2023.

WITH a casting announcement for the Dolly musical imminent, fans everywhere have fingers crossed that the only non-US fi nalist in the “The Search For Dolly” can nab the role of a lifetime. Maybe one day, we’ll also see her again at a future Dolly Parton Festival in Narromine.

Making our crossings safer… a new funding program for regional councils will support projects to upgrade roads at public level crossings.

By STAFF REPORTERS A NEW funding program offers regional NSW councils the opportunity to share in $1 million for projects to upgrade roads at public level crossings.

The NSW Government’s “Level Crossing Improvement Program — Regional Council Minor Works” is accepting applications until May for projects that make road approaches to level crossings safer.

This work could include vehicle-activated signage, line marking, upgrading or installing street lighting, traffic calming treatments (excluding speed limit reductions), and minor road realignments.

Transport for NSW’s road and maritime safety chief, Bernard Carlon, said the new program will help councils carry out minor, low-cost engineering works and safety improvements on road approaches to level crossings.

“There are over 1300 level crossings located on public roads across NSW and collisions between trains and vehicles are a major road and rail safety risk,” Mr Carlon said.

“Through the new Level Crossing Improvement Program, we are partnering with regional councils who manage around 90 per cent of the State’s road network by length,” he explained.

Improvement projects to be funded by the grants are considered to be another step towards fulfilling the government’s aim of zero road trauma incidents by 2050.

“It’s also important to remember that, while infrastructure improvements will continue to reduce risk at level crossings, drivers, riders and pedestrians should always take care and obey the road rules each time they encounter a level crossing,” Mr Carlon added.

The 2025-26 Budget was handed down on Tuesday, March 25, by Treasurer Jim Chalmers, and was a particularly exciting one as the nation continues to hold its breath for a date for the Federal Election.

This year, the Narromine Star has been able to provide on-the-spot, independent, and exclusive coverage of the Federal Budget that is unique to local rural and regional communities.

Rural Crime Matters

New rapid response units target Western youth crime

A NEW rapid response police unit is promising to tackle youth crime in Western NSW as criminal activity spirals in regional and rural communities.

On Wednesday, March 19, NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Pisanos announced a high-level strategy including 60 new dedicated police and rapid response units to tackle juvenile crime across the state.

“Operation Soteria” aims to address the escalation of violence in offenders aged between 11 to 16-years-old across western and northern areas of the state.

The initial focus will be on the communities of Moree, Tamworth, Dubbo, Orange, Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Taree and Newcastle, with the initial phase of the operation to run until mid-June.

An extra 20 officers will supplement the unit in the form of “surge operations” each week, to bolster operational numbers to 80.

Polair and roaming response units will also complement the high-visibility operations that will focus on a range of crimes, in particular aggravated break, enter and steal offences, stealing motor vehicles, and “post-and-boast” offences where kids use social media to gain notoriety for their crimes.

Coordinated response to youth crime

OPERATION Soteria will be a statewide coordinated response to youth crime and will take overall command and control of criminal investigations into offending across the northern and western policing regions.

It will also oversee Operation Regional Mongoose — es-

tablished in September 2023 — which has been arresting an average of 13 young offenders every week.

Deputy Commissioner Pisanos also said there will be a strong focus on diverting young offenders away from criminal behaviour.

“The operational arm of this will consist of high-visibility policing, targeting a defi ned cohort of hundreds of repeat offenders believed to be responsible for 90 per cent of youth crime across regional NSW,” he told a press conference in Dubbo last week.

As part of the prevention arm of Operation Soteria, police authorities will aim to identify and refer young offenders into programs such as Youth Action Meetings, a multi-agency forum designed to help at-risk young people from re-offending.

Other youth programs through the NSW Police Crime Prevention and Youth Command will also be utilised.

“This is about sending a clear message to these young criminals,” he said.

“Part of this mission is to lock up the ring leaders and divert others away from a life of crime.”

Under Operation Soteria, investigators will use “real time” intelligence to identify “postand-boast” social media trends, and those on the periphery of offending will be diverted to youth support services.

Since new “post-and-boast” legislation came into effect 12 months ago, 53 individuals have been charged, 27 of whom were under the age of 16.

The number of young offenders in the Far West and Orana region in the reporting period was 1089 — a 10 per cent increase in the 10 years to December 2024.

A total of 617 (56 per cent) of these then proceeded to court, with 61 diverted to Youth Justice Conference.

A total of 330 (30 per cent) of these young offenders also received a caution notice from police while 81 (seven per cent) received a warning.

Despite the number of young offenders in the region, cause for concern in itself, we are yet to reach the peak of 2023, which involved just under 2000 young offenders being arrested between January and December of that year.

The top three offences for young offenders in the Far West and Orana region in the reporting period of January to December last year included non-domestic violence related assault (143 offences), intimidation, stalking and harassment (141 offences), and malicious damage to property (96 offences).

In NSW, “young people” — for the legal defi nition — are aged between 10–17 years inclusive with the minimum age of criminal responsibility set at 10 years old.

Young people in the State who offend can therefore be proceeded to court or diverted from the court system to young offender programs.

Young offenders need support for successful rehabilitation WHILE many in the community are pleased with the announcement of another dedicated taskforce to youth crime, this has sounded the alarm bells among social and youth services.

The peak organisation representing young people and youth services in NSW, Youth Action, has urged the State Government to ensure that Operation Soteria is accompanied by a “robust” investment in youth hubs which aim to address the root causes of crime by offering practical, pro-active support to at-risk young people.

Youth hubs are designed to

provide young people with a one-stop shop to access support services and programs.

The hubs aim particularly to support young people who have experienced trauma, poverty, or disengagement from education, factors that are known to drive young people into crime.

Youth Action Chief Executive, Lauren Stracey, said that if the NSW Government was actually committed to preventing this problem, then investment into youth hubs needed to be a priority.

“If you are serious about addressing youth crime, then you need to be serious about solutions that focus on early intervention, trust-building, and community-based support,” Ms Stracey said in a media statement.

“Youth hubs give young people access to support delivered by qualified staff with the right skills to actually engage meaningfully,” she added.

The hubs offer young people opportunities to gain essential life skills and connections to educational and employment pathways.

Youth Action recommends the NSW Government partner with local councils and specialist youth community organisations to establish and expand youth hubs, especially in regional areas.

The organisation says the partnership should include funding commitments that allow for adequate staffing including intensive support workers, activity coordinators and Aboriginal support workers, Ms Stracey said.

“Youth Action is ready to collaborate closely with the NSW Government to co-design these hubs with young people themselves, ensuring they are relevant, safe, accessible and responsive to local community needs,” she concluded.

Carrot and Lentil Loaf

By NARROMINE CWA AS Autumn rolls on, it’s time to start thinking about delicious hot meals you can enjoy as the weather cools down.

You know we can cook, and with a little guidance from us, so you can, too! Here’s our recipe for Carrot and Lentil Loaf…

What you need…

3 tablespoons olive oil 2 onions, chopped

2 carrots, finely grated 225g red lentils 400 ml vegetable stock 2 tablespoons mango chutney 2 tablespoons tomato paste 200 g almonds, chopped 2 eggs, lightly beaten filling 100g mature tasty cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup fresh white breadcrumbs juice of 2 lemons 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley sauce 2 450g cans chopped tomatoes A few drops Tabasco sauce 1 tablespoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon sugar salt and pepper What you do…

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line the base and sides of a 400ml loaf tin with baking paper.

Heat oil in a pan and cook onions for about five minutes, until softened.

Stir in the carrot and cook for a further four minutes, then add the lentils and stock.

Bring to the boil and simmer until lentils are cooked (about 25 minutes), stirring occasion-

ally and adding more stock if necessary.

Leave to cool.

Once cooled, add the chutney, tomato paste, almonds and eggs to the lentils.

Spoon two-thirds of this mixture into the loaf tin, making sure the mixture covers the base and sides of the tin.

To make the filling, mix together the cheese, bread-crumbs, lemon juice and chopped parsley.

Spoon mixture into the loaf tin, then spread the remaining lentils on top.

Cover with aluminium foil and bake for 1 hour, 20 minutes.

While the loaf is cooking, make the tomato sauce.

Blend all the ingredients in a blender, then pour into a saucepan, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes.

Serve the loaf sliced, with the sauce spooned over.

Agency, Leadership, Reform: National Close the Gap Day 2025

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN FOR more than a decade, Australians from every corner of the country, in schools, businesses and community groups, have shown their support for Closing the Gap. This year, the National Close the Gap Day was observed on Thursday, March 20, and the day continues to remind the community that all Australians value health equality as a fundamental right for all.

The aim of National Close the Gap Day is to take meaningful action in support of achieving health equality for First Nations Peoples by 2032.

The Steering Committee first met in March 2006, and their campaign was launched in April 2007 by patrons Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe.

In 2007, the Council of Australian Governments set measurable targets to track and assess developments in the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

These targets included achieving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality within a generation and halving the mortality rate gap for children under five years old within a decade.

The Close the Gap Campaign Alliance Group released a report in March to coincide with National Close the Gap Day, and stated that it is “deeply disappointing” that very little meaningful reform has been implemented.

“For almost two decades some interaction for the Closing the Gap strategy has been in place and yet comprehensive departmental and agency reform is seriously lacking,” the report said.

“Our recommendations are clear, we have called on Commonwealth, state and territory governments to fulfil their commitments in and to the National Agreement… divisive state and territory policies that are in direct contradiction to the National Agreement further complicate not just progress across the target areas but the policy environment in which the targets are supposed to be achieved.”

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN IT was a wild morning of wet and windy weather on Friday, March 21, when the Trangie Local Aboriginal Land Council held a morning tea at the Wungunja Cultural Centre in celebration of NSW Seniors Week.

Residents from Kurrajong Court were due to be bussed down to the event, but due to the torrential rain, dangerous, wet and slippery conditions, it was just too much of a risk for the residents to attend.

The Narromine Star did catch up with two Trangie seniors, Glenda and Allan, who popped into the event to have a cup of tea and a few nice sandwiches.

Glenda and Allan will be moving from Trangie in the next couple of months to Geurie in order to be closer to Dubbo for health and support services.

Glenda arrived in Trangie in the early 1980s, with Allan also settling in Trangie in the late 1980s.

“We both settled in Trangie and we just ended up staying because of the amazing community,” they

told the Narromine Star.

The seniors morning tea coincided with the NSW Seniors Festival which celebrates the role and contributions of older Australians to local communities.

It is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, with over half a million people attending.

In the Narromine Local Government Area (LGA) 12.8 per cent of the population receive an aged pension compared to nine per cent at a statewide level according to data published in September 2024 by the National Emergency Management Agency of Australia.

Over 1,600 residents in the Narromine LGA are over the age of 60, with seniors making up a sixth of the total population according to the 2021 census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

According to the data in the 2021 census there are over 600 residents aged over 75, however, it is important to note that this data may not be the current representation of age in the Narromine LGA as it is over four years old.

Recommendations THERE are 44 recommendations outlined in the Close the Gap report.

Of major note is the recommendation to increase the age of criminal responsibility to at least 14 years old, consistent with international human rights conventions relating to rights of children and youth crime.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth are over represented in the youth justice system with three in five Indigenous young people in detention on an average night, according to statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Another recommendation made in the report is to actively implement alternative solutions to youth detention including consideration of remand out of custody, alternative safe housing solu-

tions and recidivism programs.

Increasing investment into justice initiatives that incorporate culturally safe alternatives to youth detention is another recommendation made by the Close the Gap Campaign Alliance.

The recommendations also focus on suicide prevention, stolen generations, a Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, aged care, health workforce and cultural safety.

Many of the recommendations laid out in the report call for investment by all levels of government and other initiatives that have been suggested by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community groups and support services for decades.

“The stagnating and declining progress across critical socioeconomic targets has real consequences and an inability to implement the National Agreement, directly translates to an inability to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” the report said.

“The shocking truth is that the extreme inequities that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience are entirely preventable.”

Federal Budget 101: spotlight on regional and rural funding From page 1 In the 2025-26 Budget, the Government has provided $8.5 billion towards 19 million new major road and rail projects and $292.6 million in additional funding for existing projects in regional Australia, with most of those located in Northern Australia.

Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry THE Albanese Government will provide $45.2 million over three years from 2025-26 to support priorities in the agriculture, fisheries and forestry portfolio.

According to Budget papers, the overall production of the sectors are projected to reach $98 billion in 2025-26.

This is the third highest production value on record and demonstrates the Australian agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors are resilient to changes in internal markets, seasonal conditions and input costs.

With approximately 70 per cent of Australian agricultural goods exported, agricultural trade and exports are a source of direct economic job and skill security in regional and remote communities across the country, where agricultural goods are predominantly produced.

The $45.2 million in funding includes $23.8 million over three years from 202526 to sponsor agricultural trade events, $11 million in 2025-26 to continue efforts to reduce the economic and environmental burden of established feral animals, pests and weeds, $6.8 million to the Department to sustain non-regulatory agricultural export and $3.5 million over two years to develop a National Food Security Strategy (NFSS).

The NFSS will position Australia as a regional food superpower, according to the Budget papers, ensuring the success of the nation’s agricultural sector and supply chains while securing our regions by supporting farmers.

The strategy aims to deliver improved agricultural productivity and supply chain resilience, which in turn will provide insights into food price volatility, improve food security, and provide cost-of-living relief.

Water THE Albanese Government will continue to provide funding over three years from 202526 to continue the implementation of the Murray Darling Basin Plan through additional voluntary water purchases that will contribute towards better environmental outcomes under the Basin Plan.

ernment saying it would impair the Commonwealth’s position in negotiating contracts.

There has been no funding announced for water infrastructure projects in Western NSW, with funding distributed to projects in Queensland and Tasmania.

However, $21.1 million will be redirected over three years from the 2024-25 financial year from projects not longer proceeding to new water infrastructure projects and repurpose funding provided to support urgent First Nations water infrastructure priorities.

Closing the Gap THE Government will provide just over $506 million over five years from the 2024-25 fi nancial year to achieve better outcomes for First Nations people under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Some of the initiatives that make up the funding include $33.6 million over two years from 2025-26 to extend the Clontarf Foundation program for the 2026 school year to support school engagement for First Nations young men; $21.8 million over two years from 2025-26 to continue to provide family, domestic and sexual violence services to First Nations women, children and communities; and $24.7 million over four years from 2024-25 to improve access to culturally safe and qualified mental health support, including scholarships for up to

150 First Nations psychology students to boost the First Nations healthcare workforce.

Regional and Rural Healthcare REBATES for Bulk Billing Incentive items will continue to scale based on the location of the provider, with practitioners in regional, rural and remote areas able to claim items with higher rebates compared to those working in metropolitan areas.

This means many Medicare-eligible patients bulk billed for a standard general practitioner consult would be eligible for a tripled incentive of $32.50 in regional areas and up to $41.10 in very remote areas — compared to an incentive of $21.35 in metropolitan areas.

The Government is committed to growing Australia’s healthcare workforce with $606.3 million over four years from 2025-25 to strengthen Medicare by delivering more Australian doctors.

This package will increase capacity across the General Practitioner and Rural Generalist training pipelines, with 50 per cent of the additional GP trainee places to be in regional and rural areas.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has also announced an additional 50 Urgent Care Clinics.

He says this brings the total number of facilities to 137 across the country.

“Four in every five Aus-

tralians will live within a 20-minute drive of an Urgent Care Clinic… taking pressure off hospitals and emergency departments.”

However, the closest Urgent Care Clinic to this shire, and the only one in the Western NSW Local Health District, is located in Bathurst.

Aged Care THE Department of Health and Aged Care develops and delivers evidence-based policy, well-targeted programs, and best practice regulation to achieve better health and wellbeing for all Australians, now and for future generations.

The Budget will build upon the reform to the aged care system that the Australian Government has undertaken.

It will ensure that there is dignity and equitable access for older Australians in regional and rural communities.

The Government has committed just over $60 million over five years from 2025-26 to deliver culturally appropriate aged care assessments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through respective organisations.

The measure aims to improve culturally safe access pathways to aged care services and support for older First Nations people in regional, remote and very remote communities.

Further to the funding, just over $116 million has been committed in 2025-26 to fully

deliver existing and new regulatory functions under the Aged Care Act 2024, through the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission that appropriately costs all of their regulatory activity under the Act. More than one-third of all Australians of all residential and home care aged care services are in regional, rural and remote Australia.

Education TO support Free TAFE, the Federal Government has introduced legislation that will establish it as an enduring feature of the national Vocational Education and Training system.

The Treasurer says the government is aiming to provide 100,000 free TAFE places annually from 2027.

Currently 35 per cent of existing fee-free TAFE enrolments are in regional locations, and it is anticipated that ongoing fee-free TAFE will have a positive impact on regional Australia by providing high-quality, responsive and accessible education and training to boost productivity and build a skilled workforce in sectors of national priority.

The Albanese Government is also committing $7 million over four years to increase the Living Away from Home Allowance to $120 per week for fi rst-year apprentices, $90 per week for second-year apprentices and $45 per week for third-year apprentices.

More tax cuts announced… but won’t be felt until 2026

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN IN its 2025-26 Federal Budget, the Albanese Labor Government announced further tax reform for every Australian taxpayer on top of already existing tax cuts that were rolled out in July last year.

However, taxpayers in Australia will not see the cuts come into effect until July 1, 2026.

According to the Federal Government, every Australian taxpayer will receive an extra tax cut of up to $268 from 2026 and up to $536 every year from July 1, 2027, compared to 2024-25 tax settings.

In 2024, the Government cut two rates and lifted two thresholds to deliver tax cuts for all Australian taxpayers, including cutting the rate that applies to a taxable income earned between $18,201 and $45,000 to 16 per cent.

ELOISE is a high school teacher who lives in regional Australia and earns $90,000 per year.

Under the fi rst round of tax cuts, Eloise pays $1,929 less tax in the 202425 fi nancial year and 2025-26 compared to the 2023-24 tax settings.

When combined with the new tax cuts, this tax saving will grow to nearly $2,500 in the 2027-28 fi nancial year.

This means Eloise will receive an additional tax cut of $536 every year from 2027-28 fi nancial year.

This week’s announcement means further cuts to income taxes, with the rate being reduced to 15 per cent from July 1, 2026 and further reduced by another one percent to 14 per cent from July 1, 2027.

The average annual tax cut will increase to just over $2,220 in 2026-27 and just over $2,500 in 2027-28.

In real terms, that means the average Australian will be saving around $50 per week.

It will mean a worker on average earnings is expected to pay $30,000 less tax over the period to 2035-36.

In good news for singles, families, seniors and pensioners, the Medicare levy low-income thresholds will be increased by 4.7 per cent.

Australians on lower incomes will continue to be exempt from paying the Medicare levy, or pay a reduced levy rate.

Dual Income Case Study ISHA and Cameron have two children and are working full-time.

Isha is a registered nurse and Cameron is a truck driver, both earning $80,000 per year.

As a result of the Government’s new tax cuts, Isha and Cameron will collectively pay $536 less tax in the 202627 fi nancial year, and $1,072 less tax in the 2027-28 fi nancial year.

Combined with the Federal Government’s fi rst round of tax cuts, Isha and Cameron will collectively pay $4,430 less tax in the 2027-28 fi nancial year, compared to the 2023-24 tax settings.

New scheme to make telcos provide better connectivity

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN THE Albanese Government has announced it will introduce a Universal Outdoor Mobile Obligation that will require major telecommunication companies to provide access to mobile voice and SMS across regional, rural and remote communities.

The Obligation is expected to commence by late 2027 with the framework legislation to be brought to Parliament later this year.

Despite the announcement made in the Regional Ministerial Budget Statement for the 2025-26 fi nancial year, there has been no allocation in funding made by the Albanese Government to fund the Obligation.

Telstra, Optus and TPG will be required under the Obligation to ensure that those living in the most rural and remote areas of Australia have some sort of mobile connection to ensure they are able to make phone calls, send texts and in the case of an emer-

gency, dial Triple Zero.

It comes after the 3G network shutdown in October last year left many residents in rural, regional and remote areas without mobile reception, and despite Telstra promising that those communities would not be adversely impacted by the closure.

In addition to this announcement, the Albanese Government announced $2.2 billion to strengthen regional digital connectivity, including the ambitious Better Connectivity Plan for Regional and Rural Australia, and investment to enhance connectivity and digital inclusion outcomes in remote communities; and a range of initiatives to keep regional, rural and remote Australia connected to metropolitan cities.

In its foreword in the Regional Ministerial Budget Statement, the Federal Government says it will continue to roll out record funding to improve regional telecommunications and data resilience.

Nationals pledge funding for Trangie if Coalition wins next election

Senator Perin Davey and Parkes Nationals’ candidate Jamie Chaffey were in Trangie last week to announce a major funding commitment ahead of the federal election.

Members of the Trangie community attended the funding announcement where The Nationals pledged $420,000, with an additional $30,000 from Narromine Shire Council, to upgrade the L TO R: Trangie Action Group’s Terrie Milgate, Senator Perin Davey, Mayor Ewen Jones and Jamie Chaffey.

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN WITH the federal election set to be called at any moment, and must take place by Saturday, May 17 at the latest, The Nationals were in Trangie last week to announce a major funding commitment that will follow through if the Coalition wins the poll.

Nationals’ Candidate for Parkes, Jamie Chaffey, and Deputy Nationals’ Leader, Senator Perin Davey, announced last Wednesday, March 19, that a future Coalition government would provide $420,000 in funding for the refurbishment of infrastructure at Trangie Showground.

The funding would go towards improvements to the Showground entrance, re-roofing the pavilion, the demolition of old horse stables and development of day yards.

Mr Chaffey said the funding would provide much needed upgrades in infrastructure if the Coalition were to win the

next election.

“I believe in this project; the Council believes in this project and The National Party believes in this project and wants to see further investment continue in Trangie,” he said.

“This is my commitment, and The Nationals’ commitment to the Narromine Shire, because we believe in regional communities and want to support projects that will make Trangie an even better place to live.”

Many Showground user groups are run by dedicated volunteers and the Trangie Showground is a vital asset to the local community. Narromine Shire Council will also contribute $30,000 towards the upgrades, bringing the total combined investment to $450,000 for the local community.

Mayor Ewen Jones said the council welcomes any commitment of funding to the Narromine Shire.

“The council welcomes any commitment of funding within our shire, in this case for potential upgrades at the Trangie Racecourse and Showground, following on the good work of the various committees that utilise these facilities,” he said.

Mr Chaffey has been campaigning in the seat of Parkes for the last eight months. Parkes electorate covers 51 per cent of the state of NSW, making it the largest federal electorate in NSW and one of the largest in the country geographically.

He explained that his campaign is about increasing the population of rural and regional communities and retaining residents who already live in the electorate.

“Getting people back into our communities and retaining people who want to be in our communities but also giving other people a really good reason why they should come and take up employment,” he said at a press con-

ference on Wednesday.

“We have the services, we have the support that they need to live in our communities,” he added.

Senator Perin Davey said the funding demonstrates The Nationals’ strong fo cus on delivering for re g ional communities.

“These infrastructure investments in Trangie represent our commitment to ensuring regional families have access to safe, modern amenities that support community and agricultural traditions,” Senator Davey said.

Mr Chaffey said The Nationals are the only political party that understands regional and rural communities across the country.

“Only The Nationals truly understand regional Australia. When there was a change of government back in 2022, a lot of the funding streams that normally would go to council and other community groups were stopped. They were shut

We as a Coalition government are guaranteeing if we come back into power that is going to change.”

With The Nationals and the Liberal Party in a Coalition together, this means they must win the next federal election if Trangie is to see the promised funding delivered.

Even if Mr Chaffey wins the seat of Parkes at the election, Trangie will not receive the funding if the Coalition does not return to government.

The Coalition needs to win 18 seats across the country in order to form a majority government. Independent candidates and the minor parties (not Labor) are the Coalition’s biggest competition at the ballot box.

Urgent call to tackle mental health crisis in agriculture

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN A POWERFUL message calling for immediate action to address the ongoing mental health crisis in agriculture has been made by a major coalition of interest groups in the industry.

More than 30 rural and healthcare organisations joined forces for the fi rst time to launch a joint statement over an issue that disproportionately affects people working on the land.

In the lead up to the federal election, this group is calling on the government to make an immediate investment of $50 million over five years to address the crisis.

Endorsing organisations include, but are not limited to, the National Farmers Federation (NFF), Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), Lifeline, Nutrien Ag Solutions, National Rural and Remote Suicide Prevention Service, and Farmsafe Australia.

Unique challenges POOR mental health has a significant impact on workplace safety, with the agricultural industry in Australia having some of the highest rates of fatality and injury, which also impact productivity and profitability in the sector.

Despair and suicide also have devastating impacts, not just on the businesses and families directly involved, but also on entire communities in regional and rural Australia.

While many of the issues faced by farmers are intertwined with the broader health challenges of living and working in rural, regional, and remote areas across the country, the agricultural sector faces its own unique challenges.

Mental health and wellbeing of people in agriculture continues to be adversely impacted by increasingly complex and compounding events including weather and natural disasters, fi nancial stress, and geographic or social isolation.

WE’VE been looking at questions in relation to our faith at church this month, fi nding possible answers to issues, and seeking help from the Bible.

This week it was time for that age-old dilemma — is there a God? It may seem unlikely for

“A farmer’s greatest asset isn’t their land, livestock or produce, it’s their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of the people around them,” Mr Jochinke explained.

“It’s clear the unique mental health needs in agriculture are not being met by existing services and we need the government to give us a leg up so we can turn these devastating statistics around,” he added.

This wellbeing coalition is calling for the federal government to focus on five key principles and priorities to address the devastating mental health crisis in agriculture.

Tailored services and community engagement are two priorities the wellbeing coalition is seeking investment for in mental health in the bush.

It says the farming community needs improved access to services which meet their specific needs, and mental health professionals must have an awareness as well as an understanding of the unique challenges facing those in the agricultural sector.

It also says recognising the unique needs and strengths of rural communities and actively engaging community members in policy development is a non-negotiable when addressing mental health in agriculture.

RFDS Queensland State Manager, Dr Tim Driscoll, said the mental health and wellbeing of people in the agriculture sector is complicated.

“Poor mental health and suicide are having a devastating impact on rural families, communities and businesses right now, and we need federal help to fi x it,” Dr Driscoll said.

“The wellbeing of people in agriculture is impacted by increasingly complex and compounding events like weather and natural disasters, fi nancial stress and geographic or social isolation.” a person who attends a place of worship regularly to have a balanced view of this question, but I’ll let you decide that one.

Climate change key factor in poor mental health, says FCA FARMERS for Climate Action (FCA) is a movement of farmers, agricultural leaders and rural Australians working to influence Australia to adopt climate policies by increasing the number of farmers, farming communities and elected representatives championing ambitious action.

The organisation is independent, non-profit and non-partisan, representing 8000 farmers across the country and its supporter base reaching 45,000 people committed to climate action for agriculture.

FCA Chief Executive Natalie Collard said while they welcome the NFF highlighting the plight of mental health in the agriculture industry, not discussing the impact of climate change is simply not good enough.

“Excluding climate change from a mental health discussion about farming ignores the scientific reality… climate change and repeated droughts, floods and fires are hurting farmers’ mental health,” she explained.

Recent analysis by Griffith University regarding suicide All have faith as a starting point.

“Climate change needs to be an integral part of the mental health conversation,” Ms Collard concluded.

A closer look: poor mental health rates in agriculture THE 2023 National Farmer Wellbeing Report surveyed 1300 farmers from across the country and found that weather and natural disasters were the most common triggers for mental health issues, affecting 47 per cent of farmers.

In addition to this, almost half of all farmers had experienced thoughts of self-harm or suicide, while almost onethird had attempted self-harm or suicide.

Some 88 per cent of survey respondents said extreme weather events adversely impacted farming operations, with the average cost $1.4 million per farm.

A lack of control over the weather and resulting sense of powerlessness has previously us. If we want it, we need to be ready to receive it.

But let’s hear from the non-Christian standpoint. After all, even if you’re a non-believer you may still need to explain your view of God. In 1882, the German philosopher Frederich Nietzsche made his celebrated and dire announcement: ‘God is dead’.

He was speaking for many intellectuals who believed the progress of science would cause a decline in religious faith, with Christianity being the principal loser.

As the 1900s approached, many leading secular thinkers like George Bernard Shaw and HG Wells argued that the dawning 20th century would mark the close of history’s religious phase.

I welcome this announcement and its strategy to tackle youth crime across the State — particularly in the Dubbo region.

This police operation is a significant fi rst step in addressing the crime crisis gripping our communities, and I hope this blitz will be ongoing.

We must drive down youth

crime and end the cycle of fear and violence being perpetrated daily on our streets and in our local neighbourhoods.

Simply put: residents need to feel safe again.

I’m pleased that new, dedicated police and rapid response units are being deployed in this campaign.

Our police officers do an extraordinary job in locking up criminals, but their good work is being let down by weak bail laws in NSW. High visibility policing is only part of the solution — we need immediate legislative reform to stop repeat serious youth offenders from holding our regional communities to ransom.

We also know legislative changes are not the entire solution — and an holistic approach is needed that’s tai-

lored to each community.

A one-size-fits-all approach isn’t going to cut it because every community is different, and they all need different solutions based on what capacity they have on the ground.

As I’ve said many times — It will involve diversionary programs and different pathways for different kids — rather than constantly bailing them back into the same environment over and over again but giving police the legislative support they need is a crucial start.

Secondary Student Leadership Program IT was fantastic to have student leaders from the Dubbo electorate in Parliament last week for the Secondary Student Leadership Program.

Each year, the Education and Engagement team invites student leaders from every NSW secondary school to visit the Parliament and meet their elected representatives.

Five years of Cups of Kindness at Cafe 2823

Over 7,500 Cups of Kindness have been bought since the initiative began in 2020 at Cafe 2823 in Trangie.

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN THE ripple effect of one small act of kindness has since grown into a heartwarming tradition in Trangie, with visitors and locals alike embracing the spirit of kindness and generosity.

It started back in April 2020, honouring a young man called Timmy who had taken his own life at the age of 17.

COVID restrictions at that time meant a limited number of people could attend his funeral, and his family asked for

people to do a random act of kindness in his honour.

While the teenager had no personal connection with Cafe 2823, local resident Kate Kennedy was a friend of Timmy’s mother, Bronwyn, and decided to buy $50 worth of coffee for strangers at the local cafe as her random act of kindness.

Her gesture was a tribute to the teenager’s passion for coffee and his enrolment in a barista course when the pandemic began.

What started as a simple act

The young man whose passing inspired the Cups of Kindness initiative in Trangie: Timmy.

of kindness has now become a lasting community initiative in Trangie.

Nearly five years later, the Cups of Kindness initiative continues to thrive, with 7,508 (as of Friday, March 21) cuppas being enjoyed at Cafe 2823.

Co-owner Dee Carney said people’s generosity is enabling the initiative to continue, and with the support flowing, it is not expected to slow down any time soon.

“It continues today, people come in and get a cup of coffee

and or pay for a cup of coffee for somebody else,” she said.

She also noted the initiative isn’t limited to those in need, anyone can receive or contribute to the cups of kindness program.

“We actually don’t discriminate and it’s the next person that comes in and wants a regular coffee that is what they get.”

While the cost-of-living hits everyone in the Narromine Shire hard, a small act of paying it forward can brighten someone’s day.

“We only charge five dollars

for it… and it is just a small or regular cup,” she said.

“We will keep it going for as long as we can keep it going.”

Cafe 2823 renovations well underway

YOU may have noticed in the last couple of months there has been a big change happening at Cafe 2823.

A new undercover courtyard dining/function area is currently in the process of being built where the original outdoor cafe area was.

The Narromine Star visited Cafe 2823 late last week and spoke with co-owner Dee Carney about how the renovations are going.

“This is going to be an undercover courtyard, dining and function area,” she said.

“We are going to have the ability to host up to 80 people for any functions that people might like to have.”

The courtyard dining/

function area is expected to be completed by April of this year and Dee says while it may be simple, it is a great ‘expansion’ for their business.

“It will be simple but it gives a great amount of room to have entertainment. It will be screened and roofed with solid walls on either side,” she explained.

“It will have the ability to have a nice airflow get through, and we will have it heated and cooled with fans and portable heaters.”

Dee said anyone in the community will be able to hire out the space.

“It will be an area where people can hold workshops, hire out, and provide another function space to the community in Trangie,” she said.

“I would be happy enough to hire it out to community groups, you know anything, mental health, employment services, etc.”

The space already has a booking slated for Saturday, May 17, and the community is highly supportive of Dee and her sister/co-owner Julie’s ambition to expand their business.

Dee and Julie have been running a catering business for the last nine years and the new courtyard dining/function area gives them an opportunity to keep everything in house and further expand their business.

“It will be much easier for us, and just better for us all round,” she said.

Cafe 2823 are expecting to have their new undercover outdoor function/dining area open for business by the end of April.

This week: Police pursuit, weapons seized, man wanted

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN IN this week’s edition of Rural Crime Matters, the Narromine Star brings you a snapshot of last week’s crime news from across the Narromine Shire and beyond.

Teenager charged following alleged police pursuit in stolen vehicle A TEENAGE boy has faced a children’s court over an alleged stolen vehicle and police pursuit in Dubbo late last week.

Police attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District responded to reports a white Mazda CX5 was stolen from a property on Regand Park Boulevard, Dubbo, between 8.30pm on Wednesday March 19 and 1.50am on Thursday, March 20.

At about the same time in the early hours of Thursday morning, police sighted the vehicle travelling on Myall Street, Dubbo, and attempted to stop it.

When it allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated with speeds allegedly reaching 175km per hour.

The vehicle continued along Twickenham Drive towards St Georges Crescent, before

travelling towards Whitewood Road.

Police will allege the driver rammed the side of a police car before the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns.

The vehicle turned onto Myall Street where it crashed into a curb and the driver fled the scene on foot.

NSW Police set up a perimeter and located a 16-year-old boy in a nearby cemetery.

He was arrested and taken to Dubbo Police Station where he was charged with a series of driving offences including police pursuit, never licensed to drive, and a weapons offence.

He was refused bail and appeared in a children’s court last week.

More than 90 weapons seized in statewide knife wanding operations NSW Police have taken more than 90 unlawful weapons off the streets and conducted 34 high-visibility wanding operations in an effort to reduce knife crime.

Late last year, the state government introduced legislation to target the possession of knives, reduce knife crime and improve the overall safety of the community.

of a fi ne of $5500.

Penalties of up to $11,000 or imprisonment of up to four years can apply for carrying a knife without a reasonable excuse.

The legislation also made it illegal to sell knives to a child under the age of 18, with exemptions for retailers selling to young people who need a knife for their work or study.

The penalties for selling knives to juveniles was also increased.

Appeal to locate wanted person

carried out Operation Ares — which began earlier this year — a high-visibility policing operation in which officers use handheld scanners or electronic metal detecting wands to detect knives and other weapons.

There have been 34 operations carried out across the state in Dubbo, Sydney CBD, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Parramatta, Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Nowra, Bomaderry,

Albury and Lavington.

In total, 4,147 people have been scanned, with 91 unlawful weapons seized and 67 people charged with 71 weapons offences.

Police have seized an array of weapons including tasers, sling shots, knuckle dusters, machetes and folding and kitchen knives.

Police can request that a person produce a metal object, if detected, while in a designated place. Failure to comply may result in a maximum penalty

NSW Police are appealing for public assistance to locate a man wanted by virtue of a warrant in the state’s mid-west.

A 27-year-old man, Jake West, is wanted on an outstanding warrant for fi rearms offences.

Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police are conducting inquiries into his whereabouts.

West is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 175cm tall, of thin build, with short dark brown hair and tattoos on his left calf and his left and right forearm.

Anyone who sees him is urged to not to approach him but to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

By DALLAS REEVES RECENT storms have created the right conditions for Australian plague locust swarms to migrate out of the Central West, a relief for local landholders.

Central West Local Land Services (CWLLS) Senior Biosecurity Officer, Rhett Robinson has reported that, while Australian plague locusts were a major concern as little as two weeks ago, the immediate threat has subsided.

A social media post in late February by the group stated that locusts have been identified in our region.

The post listed key activity locations as including Ivanhoe, Tottenham, Warren, Quambone, Coonamble, and Goorianawa (between Coonabarabran and Coonamble and near Baradine).

It was expected locusts would start laying eggs in the coming weeks, with new hatchings likely from late February to early March.

However, in an interview on March 6, Mr Robinson reported a positive change in the situation.

“After a series of storm fronts that went through here two to three weeks ago,” Mr

Robinson said. “The locusts have gotten on those fronts and departed.”

Mr Robinson said CWLLS isn’t sure if the locusts have left as one group on those fronts, or whether they have left in different times, or where they have moved too.

The good news, he said, is that they have left the Central West.

“There are still scattered ones there, but not in any density that we need to worry about,” Mr Robinson said.

“It’s a relief that they have gone. It would be nice to know where they have gone too.”

The locust swarms came into the Central West in mid-December, laying eggs and then moving on.

What CWLLS was seeing in the fi rst few months of this year, was the result of those locust eggs hatching and then getting on the wing.

CWLLS were receiving reports from farmers of locust nymphs in January, with chemicals being sent to farmers to control the locusts.

Then there was a period of around five weeks into February where they remained as nymphs on the ground before starting to swarm

mid-February.

“Those swarms were quite dense,” he said.

Mr Robinson said CWLLS knew the locusts had disappeared when landholders said they were gone in follow-up calls.

The Australian Plaque Locust Commission (APLC) also did a run-through and reported that where they had found locusts previously, they were not fi nding them now.

Mr Robinson said density of locusts is a key factor if you need to report to the CWLLS. “If you’re walking through a paddock and, with every step you take, there is a good 10 or more of flying locusts flying away from you, it’s a good idea to report anything of that density and higher,” he said. “Just so we can have a look and check it out.”

Medium density, he said, is between 10–50 locusts per square metre. High density is anything above 50 locusts per square metre.

High-density locusts can heavily-interrupt farmers cropping programs, and also pastures like lucerne.

Mr Robinson said new emerging crops are susceptible to locusts. A significant

outbreak can mean farmers have to re-sow crops.

He added that if locusts remained in the areas listed, they were at densities where crops sown through autumn would have been impacted.

He said the recent January and February concern was considered a local outbreak.

The last major Australian plague locust outbreak was in the summer of 2003/2004 where locusts decimated crops both at sowing time and then in spring when locusts were chewing heads off wheat crops.

Locusts will not congregate in winter but can swarm during the warmer autumn, spring, and summer months.

If there is a background population of locusts in an area, it’s when they hit a density threshold that they tend to swarm and cause damage, Mr Robinson explained.

Since the major outbreak of 2003/2004, there have been a few outbreaks north of Dubbo, one around Binnaway, and one last year from Girilambone (north-west of Nyngan) through to Nevertire (between Nyngan and Narromine).

The late February CWLLS post serves as a reminder for

landholders to know what to look out for.

The post advised people to examine bare, compacted soil (claypans, unsealed roads, tracks, fence lines) and hard, well-drained ground along contour banks or open areas, as potential areas to spot locusts.

It also then went on to give advice on handling locusts if you spot them “Mark potential egg beds with a star picket to GPS and monitor them for emerging nymphs,” the post read.

“Locusts are much easier to manage when they’re still in the early stages, once they start flying it becomes much harder to control them.”

Central West Local Land Services then had a follow-up post on Tuesday, March 4 with the heading “Can you recognise an Australian plague locust.”

The post said to look for their red hindleg shanks, dark wingtips, and inwardly sloped face.

Mr Robinson said there are still some reports of yellow-winged locusts, Australian plague locusts are the major concern.

Eight Year 12 students from Narromine High School recently travelled to Charles Sturt University in Congratulations to Week Nine winners of Narromine Wagga Wagga for their “Explore Day”.

St Augustine’s Parish School, Narromine

ST Augustine’s held their colour run fundraiser on Monday, bringing students, staff and families together for a fun-fi lled event.

The day was fi lled with laughter and energy as pupils raced through the course, get-

ting covered in vibrant coloured powders.

Teachers joined in the celebrations, cheering on participants and embracing the fundraising event in support of their school.

The event aimed to raise money for St Augustine’s events and to promote physical activity, school spirit, and community involvement.

St John’s Parish School, Trangie ST John’s will host their Holy Week Gathering next month, which will begin on Wednesday, April 9, in the Father Coyte Centre.

The school invites the community to journey alongside them through the sacred days of Holy Week for a special celebration of faith, reflection, and community.

There will also be an Easter Hat Parade which will celebrate the students’ joy and creativity; “Recess on the

Lawn”, a time for shared joy; “Frozen in Faith”, a reflective experience led by students; and the Holy Week Mass, a sacred time of prayer and worship.

Trangie Central School TRANGIE Central School (TCS) held their parent information session on Tuesday for new parents with students in Kindergarten.

Today, Thursday, March 27, there will also be an information session for parents about cyber-security and safe use of the internet.

The session is about informing parents about safeguarding against risks and potential dangers using technology, and will be held in the TCS Library.

Narromine Public School IT has been a busy week for

students in Kindergarten and Year One with students participating in hands-on learning activities inside and outside the classroom.

Tomorrow, Friday, March 28, Narromine Public School will hold their “Grandfriends and Pink Stumps Day” starting at 9.30am with a celebration followed by open classrooms and family-inclusive activities.

The annual SRC Pink Stumps cupcake stall will also take place combined with a shared morning tea for our students and their Grandfriends.

Narromine High School CONGRATULATIONS to student leaders Hannah Preston and Callum Hutchinson, who represented Narromine High School at NSW Parliament House.

This visit was at the invitation of State Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders, and the

Western NSW Labor MLC, Stephen Lawrence.

The pupils heard about the different work of the NSW Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly, with questions about the Members’ roles and the State Parliament.

Last week, eight Year 12 students also attended an Explore Day at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga.

The group participated in workshops aligned with their chosen courses, toured the campus, and explored accommodation options. It was a great experience to help them plan for their future studies.

Congratulations also to this week’s Canteen voucher winners for displaying Narromine High’s core values of respect, responsibility and care, with prizes to Katy Barton, Cooper Hodgess, Charlotte Hutchinson, Noah Irvine, Meg Mitchell, Allie O’Brien, Mia Piper, Sahraya Poulson-Jones, Elijah Simpson, and Akane Goedhart.

Aquawest? More like ‘Aquawet’ for Cotton Growers Golf Day

The wet, wild and windy weather did not deter golfers from making the trip to Trangie for the Aquawest Macquarie Cotton Growers Golf Day. PHOTOS: NARROMINE STAR.

By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN IT was a wild morning of wet and windy weather at Trangie Golf Club on Friday, March 21, where over 50 golfers were in attendance for what was to be a big day on the course.

However, the wet weather (which was not forecast to hit Trangie) did push back the start of the golfi ng competition to later in the day, once the rain cleared up and the course dried out.

It did not dampen the spirits of the energetic golfers, however, who were more than happy to sit up in the club house sharing a laugh and drinking a beer while waiting for the rain to pass.

Trangie recorded over 16 millimeters of rain on Friday, accord-

ing to the Bureau of Meteorology.

While many revellers stayed to wait for the weather to clear, some golfers packed up their things, cutting their losses, as the rain showed no signs of slowing down earlier on.

But for those who stuck around, they were rewarded later in the day with perfect golfi ng conditions, with the bright sun beating down on the Trangie golf course and not a cloud in the sky.

Clubhouse Cup won by the “Young Guns” Winner of the Business House shoot-out, Vicki Tuck, with event sponsor, Robert Handsaker.

Mitchell Smith, Doug Potter, and Kale Bock were the highest scorers for the Under 50’s team in the Annual Clubhouse Cup competition.

Greg Barling, Sue McCutcheon, and Tony Harding earned the highest scorers for the Over 50’s in the Annual Clubhouse Cup competition.

By NORM LEWIS GOLFERS were out in force for the Annual Clubhouse Cup competition on Sunday, with a total of 56 players taking part in the event.

The course was also in good condition, thanks to our band of volunteers and the nice rain which fell in the latter part of last week.

Players were divided into teams of Under 50’s and Over 50’s for this popular event, and there was considerable talk throughout the week as to who could represent the “youngies” or the “oldies”.

The day started with a barbecue lunch followed by this challenging event. Club Captain, Alex Sambrook, and his match committee had the job

of recording all scores to determine the winners.

Finally, the result was declared and victory awarded to the “Young Guns” by eight points to six.

Individual winners on the day for the Young Guns were Mitch Smith on 38 (on a count-back) from Doug Potter, also on 38, with Kale Bock third on 37.

For the Oldies, Arch Harding recorded the best score of 44 points, but this was not enough to lead the Oldies to victory.

Sue McCutcheon received 38 points and was second for the Oldies, with Greg Barling third on 37. Nearest-the-Pin (NTP) winners were, Kim Handsaker on the ninth, and Tony Harding on the 17th,

On Saturday, a field of only seven players took part in the Individual Stableford for the Lewis Goodman trophy. The winner was Tony Mann on 38 points, from Steve Squires on 36 points. Ray Anning won the NTP on the ninth and also collected the Long Drive prize.

Final day of the 2024/25 Business House Competition was also played on Wednesday, March 19, with one player from each team battling for the major prize.

A very good field of supporters were on hand to watch this event.

Vicky Tuck from “The Chicks” was the eventual winner, a very popular winner, particularly from her team.

The best male trophy on the day went to Steve Barlow, while Jenny Ward took the ladies’ prize.

As mentioned in last week’s report, the winning team for 2024/25 was “Double Delights” over “Grey Gonads”, with “McPherson’s Pink” in third place.

The Business House Competition — a great event for the golf club which encourages those new to the game of golf to have a go — has concluded for another year.

Vets’ President, Peter Hutchinson, has advised that he and a group of Narromine Veterans attended the Binnaway Vets Open, which was played on Tuesday. He also revealed the Nyngan Vets’ Open date has been changed to the end of May. Another big week of golf — see you at the 19th!

Trangie races washed out - again!

Raced at Orange on Sunday, March 23 RENOWNED for his skills in advancing gallopers through the grades to win country cups is Dubbo trainer Michael Mulholland who has a serious contender for the $75,000 Orange Gold Cup on Friday, April 11 in the five-year-old chestnut gelding Magnace.

After winning over 1600 metres at Orange, Magnace stepped up to 2200 metres

Magnace the latest Mulholland galloper ready to contend for a country cup to win at Dubbo and back to 1600 metres on Sunday beat a handy field in the Benchmark 82 Angullong Wines Orange Cup Prelude.

Cape Byron (Deanne Panya, $5.50) broke clear in the straight however Magnace (Serg Lisnyy, $3.70 favourite) from well back fi nished very strongly to win by a length with over two lengths to the third placed Rico Suave (Mitchell Bell, $9.50).

First up for Orange trainer Alison Smith after winning several races for Gilgandra trainer Kieren Hazelton,

Turgenev charged home to win the 1280 metres Spanline Benchmark 58 Handicap.

In the straight, the heavily supported Check Your Six (Mikayla Weir, $11 to $7.50) burst through the pack and looked the likely winner.

Well ridden by Jordan Quince who is apprenticed to Alison Smith, Turgenev $13) swept down the outside to win by a length from Check Your Six and Chico Casino (Mitch Stapleford, $7).

Later in the day, the Bjorn Baker trained Triple Tempo (Brodie Loy) starting as a prohibitive $1.09 favourite, took the lead at the top of the straight and scraped home by a short neck from the strong finishing, Peter Cornish locally trained Choice Deel (Mathew Cahill, $26) and The Mooch (Ken Dunbar, $15) in the 1000 metres Central West Power Construction BM 58 Handicap.

Yet another good turnout for the meeting on Sunday and a big crowd is predicted for the Orange Gold Cup.

A-Grade Singles: semi-final action

By JOHN EDWARDS SEMI-FINALS of the A-Grade Singles were played last Saturday, with Henry Buttsworth defeating Aaron Hutchison, 25-18, and Robbie Stanford defeating Duane Faro, 25-14. Henry and Robbie will now battle it out in the final this Saturday.

Robbie has won the title on numerous occasions, but Henry will be out to atone for last

year’s loss in the big match.

So come on down and see what should be a great game of bowls.

B-Grade Singles are now on the noticeboard, with only four names up so far. Hopefully, we’ll get a few more players to hold this event.

Welcome rain at golf course

By NORM LEWIS RAIN received late last week was indeed great for the local golf course, but the slowness of the fairways resulted in lower scores for both ladies and men in the weekly competitions.

Eight ladies played the back nine, with Dale the fi rst one home on 23 points. Second place went to Anne on 22 points, while Vicky G took the Nearest-the-Pin (NTP) and Carol McC took the NAGA prize on 11 points.

This was some top golf for the ladies in their fi nal summer competition match for this term, until the competition resumes later in the year.

Over on the front nine, 11 men took to the course for their weekly event with the leading score recorded by Des with 22 points. That man again, Phil, took second place with a score of 21.

Ron took the NAGA prize on 11 points, a similar score to that of the ladies’ winner.

As a surprise, our Club captain, Terry, produced fruit and vegetable trays as prizes, with these won by Jeanette for the ladies and Jamie for the men.

Attention moved to the pool table with only one match this week, between the professionals Des and Terry against Chris (“Pom”) and Norm.

From the outset, it was all Des and Terry, until Norm hit form with some lucky shots to enable Pom to sink the black and claim victory and the title of pool champions for the week (and there is no truth to the rumour that Pom taught Norm all he knows about the game).

There were some terrible results in the footy over the weekend with Geelong going down, and Parramatta Eels losing three in a row.

Time to forget the footy for the rest of the year (except the Wests Tigers, who I think Sophia will be buying her tickets for the finals) Perhaps it might be best if they all went to Las Vegas to play permanently?

Gorillas ready to roar as Central West releases 2025 draw

THE weather may not be cooling down much, but the countdown to the Central West Rugby 2025 New Holland Cup is defi nitely heating up!

With Narromine’s season launching this weekend at the Courthouse Hotel, the Gorillas’ Rugby side have been training hard throughout the pre-season as they prepare for their fi rst round match in the second week of April.

Narromine will take on defending champions, the Mudgee Wombats, on their home turf in the first round of the New Holland Cup First Grade competition — a rematch of the 2024 Grand Final where Narromine went

down to the Wombats, 26 to 15 — narrowly missing out on the premiership.

Gorillas President, Hamish Job, told the Narromine Star he believes the Wombats will again be their biggest threat in this year’s First Grade competition.

“Mudgee for sure (will be our toughest competition).

Obviously, losing the First Grade Grand Final to Mudgee last year was disappointing,” Hamish said.

“It probably has fed a hunger for the core group of players that have been playing for Narromine for a little bit longer, to get in shape over the pre-season,” he added.

In the 2024 New Holland Cup First Grade season, Nar-

romine won nine of their 12 regular round games with impressive scores recorded against CSU Mitchell, Parkes, and Dubbo Rhinos.

Hamish said the boys have all been working hard throughout the pre-season and believes they are in for a real chance to be crowned champions in 2025.

“I am pretty confident that our core group (of players) has gotten bigger… there are a fair few blokes that are pretty keen to give it a red hot crack this year,” Hamish said.

“Things have been great at training, the boys have been working real hard, the numbers have been great, and we have been getting 30–35 boys on Tuesday and Thursday

nights, which we haven’t seen for the last couple of years.”

Mudgee dominated both the New Holland Cup First Grade and Second Grade competitions last year, with Narromine Second Grade also taking on the Wombats on their home strip in Round One. Gorillas’ Second Grade just fell short of Grand Final day in last year’s season decider, going down in the Preliminary Final to Dubbo Rhinos, 26 to 17.

Despite the amount of travel involved for the Club, Hamish said they are fortunate to have quite a young playing group who are itching to get on the field.

our playing group at the moment, with the average age of the Club I would say not much more than 23,” he told the Narromine Star.

Meanwhile, the fi rst major test for Narromine’s 2025 season will be the Warren Rugby Gala Day on the fi rst weekend of April, where they will play round-robin games against clubs that are not normally in their competition.

The Gorillas will play against the Trangie Tigers, Gulargambone, Bogan Bulls, Walgett, Dubbo Roos, Molong Magpies, and Parkes.

For local fans, the fi rst home game of the Gorillas’ season will be played against CSU Mitchell on the Anzac Day long weekend.
