“Ewe Beauties” host fun trivia night for charity

By TESS VAN LUBECK ABOUT 90 supporters rolled up to Warren Services Club on Saturday night for a trivia competition raising money for a good cause.

This follows Rachel Azar and friend, Toni Nicoletti (the “Ewe Beauties”), announcing that they are taking part in the legendary “S@#%box Rally”, which supports the popular charity, the Cancer Council.

Now in its 15th year, the rally has raised more than $50 million for the medical research not-for-profit since its inception. The event involves nominated teams driving wrecked old cars — “clunkers”, “bangers”, “bombs”, “rust-buckets” — which are affectionately called “s&*^boxes” for the purposes of the Rally.

These vehicles must be valued at no more than $1500, which are then belted across some of Australia’s most formidable roads to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to many local’s hearts.

“In June, I will be travelling with a friend, Toni Nicoletti from Stanthorpe,” Rachel told the Warren Star.

“We will be driving in a s!@#box worth $1500, starting from Perth and travelling for eight days, ending up in Darwin,” she added.

The great thing about the event, she revealed, is that the charity takes the whole amount of the money raised.

This will be her third year in the rally, for which she has so far raised more than $1400 — including from the trivia night on Saturday — which featured eight tables of teams, raffle tickets, and a 100 Club, which all contributed to the kitty.

By ERICA KEARNES AND TESS VAN LUBECK NEW technology as part of a community initiative aimed at engaging and stimulating our region’s older citizens kicked off in Warren recently.

The “Stay Connected, Stay Curious: A Senior-Friendly Path to Regional Discovery” project was officially launched last Wednesday at Warren Shire Library.

With the support of a grant from the NSW Government, the Warren Shire Library and Visitor Information teams came together for the Connecting Seniors program launch.

They were joined by community members and the Calara House team and council staff and councillors, who all celebrated the event with a morning tea.

There was also a discussion of the forthcoming program which officially launches in May. The get-together also included lots of socialising, laughter, and some keen competition around the Tovertafel “magic table”.

Tovertafel is cutting edge technology — a fi rst for the Central West — and provides a series of interactive games using high-quality projectors, infrared sensors, loudspeakers, and processors to promote physical activity and cognitive stimulation in the elderly.

Competition between council’s Acting General Manager, Stephen Glen, and Library Manager, Erica Kearnes, at Tovertafel football was particularly thrilling for all the spectators. For others, the event was also a great opportunity to catch up with friends whom they don’t get to see often, which is part of the purpose of the technology.

The innovative game technology drew a cluster of participants ready to give it a crack.

The Warren project is one of only eight selected across the State for funding — a testament to the innovation and commitment of council’s Library and Economic Development and Visitation teams.

This program is designed to be a multi-dimensional social inclusion initiative that will transform Warren Shire into a vibrant hub for senior engagement.

Sharing the memories of local seniors for visitors to enjoy is the key feature of the connecting seniors program.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to connect visitors with the heart of Warren and its people,” she added.

Economic Development and Visitation Manager, Susie Balogh, considered the launch a success and emphasised the multi-faceted benefits in store.

“It was a great launch and well-received. Visitors to Warren don’t just come for the landscapes, they come for the people,” Ms Balogh said.

“They want to know where the locals have their morning cuppa, which walking tracks they love, and where they go for a good meal,” she added.

This sense of community is part of the innate appeal of country towns like Warren, she believes.

“There is something truly special about being welcomed by the voices and stories of the people that call Warren home; just as they once welcomed me when I fi rst came to town,” Ms Balogh said.

“We cannot wait to work alongside the library team to bring this program to life,” she concluded.

Firefighters out in force on Saturday

By TESS VAN LUBECK WARREN Fire and Rescue NSW were out and about last Saturday, engaging with locals on all things firefighting, promoting the service as a career option, and supporting other local events.

The initiative began at Ellersie Lane, with ‘Coffee with a Firefighter’, where staff from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 491 Warren encouraged locals to come on down to the cafe, grab a brew and learn all about being a firefighter.

About 15 people took the opportunity to attend the event and enjoy a cuppa and a chat with some of Warren’s fi nest emergency service workers.

The local station is undertaking a recruitment drive for on-call fi refighters in Warren,

which is a paid role involving fi refighters to be “on call” and to turn out when any fi res occur locally or around the region, and they are asked to attend. Full training is provided to successful candidates.

The local fi ries also took the time to talk about home fi re safety visits, lithium battery safety (important with several recent lithium battery fi res reported in Sydney), and answering any general questions.

Later, the fire crew parked their fire engine down at the Bulldogs’ football game at Victoria Oval, where their recruitment drive and fire safety advice continued.

The team at Fire and Rescue Station 491 Warren appreciated everyone who came for a chat on Saturday, and has encouraged anyone looking for further information to get in touch.

By ANNITA CAMPBELL HOW would you summarise your life? An explanation to our human existence that is not commonly considered, is that we are all looking for “safety”. We work hard, because financial security supports our survival.

We seek to get on well with our fellow human beings, because happy relationships ensure peaceful stability. A sense of safety in our lives is good for us physically, mentally, and relationally.

There’s a reason for this. We were created to fi nd safety in the source of our existence, who is God alone. The psalmist declares that humans are in their best place possible when

he writes: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46).

Life is full of trouble. It makes us go searching for safety. We might try to rely upon ourselves to fi nd safety by working harder, being nicer, or thinking more positive thoughts.

We might also fi nd that those things don’t deliver the safeguard we are longing for.

An alternative is to explore what it is to: “dwell in the shelter of the Most High, and rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91).

It’s the sweet release of yielding to Jesus’s call: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

(Matthew 11:28-30).

New shutter protects scoreboard at Victoria Oval AS part of its ongoing work to improve public amenities in the region, Warren Shire Council completed installing a new scoreboard protection shutter at Victoria Oval last week.

The work comes ahead of the 2025 Rugby Union and Rugby League seasons, which are about to kick off in the coming weeks.

The roller-shutter will safeguard the scoreboard from adverse weather conditions, vandalism, and general wear and tear, reducing maintenance costs and extending its lifespan.

Not only does this improvement ensure the longevity and functionality of this key community asset, it helps ensure local sporting facilities remain in top condition for future generations, council announced in a statement.

“We’re proud to have completed this project for the community,” said Warren Sporting and Cultural Centre Manager, Wesley Hamilton.

“The new shutter will help protect the scoreboard and ensure it remains operational for years to come,” he added.

The roller-shutter was installed by local contractors Ryan Mason Engineering and All-A-Glow Electrical.

“With the 2025 rugby seasons just around the corner, this upgrade reinforces our commitment to supporting grassroots sport and maintaining high-quality facilities in Warren,” Wesley said.

The Dubbo District Deaf Club project provides expert hearing tests for local children on a regular basis, identifying issues that can severely impact later learning opportunities if undiagnosed, Hear Our Heart Program Manager, Michaela McGuinness explained.

Warren and Trangie receive FRRR funds

By SHARON BONTHUYS COMMUNITY projects in Warren and Trangie are set to receive funding from the prestigious Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) flagship grants program, Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC).

Warren Health Action Committee Incorporated will receive almost $10,000 for a project at the town’s aged care facility, Calara House, to establish an outdoor area, garden and barbecue to encourage social interaction. The aptly named Calara House Riverside Grill and Chill Barbecue project will receive $9298 from the FRRR SRC. Trangie Local Aboriginal Land Council will also receive $10,000 for the Bellies and New Life Project, an art project to connect pregnant women to community, combined with maternal health check-ups.

The Warren and Trangie projects have been awarded through the SRC’s Small and Vital grant steam, which funded 67 projects totalling nearly $560,000. Sixteen of those projects are in rural and regional NSW. This masthead will fi nd out more about the Warren and Trangie projects and provide an update in a future issue.

MORE than 80 community groups across remote, rural and regional Australia will share the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) grant pool of $827,253.

Grassroots not-for-profit organisations sought support for a wide range of initiatives that celebrate, strengthen and support their rural communities to be more vibrant, resilient, sustainable places to live.

Projects funded through the FRRR SRC Small and Vital grants will create inclusive and accessible community spaces, provide mentoring and training and learning opportunities, improve employment prospects, or offer people the chance to connect and engage with others and their wider community, the organisation says.

Another FRRR funding stream, Prepare and Recover, awarded nearly $270,000 to 17 initiatives that build community resilience, preparedness and capacity to miti-

gate the impact of future extreme weather events, as well as support medium to longterm recovery in regions impacted by previous disasters, such as the 2022 floods and the Black Summer bushfi res.

In NSW, five Prepare and Recover projects have been funded in the communities of Burragate, Moruya, Bemboka, Marlee and Bega Valley that stem from the 2019-2020 bushfi re disaster, while two projects in Lismore and one in Kingscliff are linked to the 2022 flood disaster. Projects at Hawks Nest and Elands have been supported for general disaster preparedness and recovery.

Jill Karena, Head of Granting at FRRR, said the SRC team is continually inspired by the strength and resilience of the NFPs dedicated to helping remote, rural and regional communities thrive.

“What makes rural communities amazing are the people that live there,” Ms Karena said.

“These places are fi lled with locals working hard to keep community spir-

it alive and willing to step up to see their region navigate the highs and lows that come with living in the country,” she added.

Ms Karena said the FRRR sees its role as walking beside those communities, and empowering local groups to lead the projects they know will have a real impact.

The popular FRRR’s SRC program offers flexible small grants year-round to remote, rural and regional communities in all states and territories.

“After supporting communities impacted by disasters for the past 25 years, we also know just how important flexible recovery and preparedness funding is, because communities’ needs change over time,” Ms Karena said.

“By using a medium to long-term recovery lens, we’re able to support projects that strengthen the social fabric of a community through preparedness, capacity and resilience-building activities,” she concluded.

THOSE affected by cancer in western NSW now have a new staffer to liaise with at the Western Cancer Centre Foundation’s (WCCF) Wellness Centre in Dubbo, as the group’s long-term vision becomes reality.

This follows the recent appointment of Leanne Davis in the crucial coordinator position at the centre.

The office administrator with an empathetic nature understands instinctively the profound impact that cancer can have on individuals and families.

Starting this week, Leanne will play a vital role in fulfi lling the Centre’s purpose, Medical Oncologist and Chairperson of the WCCF, Dr Florian Honeyball, said.

“The Wellness Centre was always meant to be the active hub of the centre and, thankfully, we have had some very big-hearted donors from both within town and beyond who shared our vision,” Dr Honeyball revealed.

“With the help of these donors, the WCCF has been able to organise and fund the [coordinator role], whose responsibility will be to curate

and sustain a creative activities program and maintain a replenishing space within our centre,” he added.

The mission of the WCCF — an essentially volunteer group — is to improve cancer care and quality of life of people living with cancer and their families throughout western NSW. Therefore, their recent decision to employ a coordinator was clear, necessary, and timely, Dr Honeyball indicated.

“The WCCF Coordinator will maintain and manage a well-resourced and functional Wellness Centre to look after people holistically.

The appointment aims to turn “a pragmatic but ordinary cancer centre, into being a state-of-the art cancer centre, one that western NSW can be very proud of,” Dr Honeyball explained.

Leanne herself is keenly looking forward to the new role that combines keen organisational skills, a pleasant, welcoming manner, and a heart of gold.

“I can’t wait to give back to our community and to the patients attending Western Cancer Centre,”

Leanne enthused.

“I understand how difficult it can be for families when caring for loved ones with a cancer diagnosis. I have empathy for families and their carers, but particularly for those people from out west and beyond that will be attending the centre,” she added.

Dr Honeyball explained that the new role is part of a number of innovative initiatives being offered at the facility for those impacted by cancer.

“We will be looking to fund and coordinate many more activities within the Wellness Centre space with local community partners in the coming months as Leanne settles into the role,” Dr Honeyball said.

“The Wellness Centre, when not booked for activities, can now be utilised by patients and their immediate caregivers for a quick massage on our massage chairs, a coffee, or a place to relax and grab a book from our small community library,” he concluded.

Warren hardware store supports Tradies in Sight visit next month

By SHARON BONTHUYS A LOCAL business has thrown its support behind the highly anticipated visit to Warren next month by regional mental health and wellbeing powerhouse, Tradies In Sight.

Warren Joinery and Hardware Store will host the Dubbo-based non-profit when it visits Warren on Wednesday, April 2, as part of the organisation’s “Real Reconnections Tour” of rural and regional communities.

Proprietor Craig Lefebvre is looking forward to the visit and is pleased to do his bit to start important conversations with tradies in Warren about their mental health and wellbeing.

“I think it will [start conversations], with the guys that I've spoken to,” Craig told the Warren Star.

“Not too many blokes open up to anyone these days.

They tend to keep things bottled up,” he added.

Tradies In Sight is a mental health and wellbeing organisation dedicated to supporting tradies in regional NSW. Founded by Bruno Efoti, who worked in the construction industry as a carpenter for 20 years and as a business owner for 15 years before starting the non-profit, Tradies In Sight helps create

"Tradies in Sight is a notfor-profit program aimed at raising awareness of the mental health issues that are unique to tradies and providing them with information and support,” the organisation says on its website.

“In an industry where the rate of suicide is six times the national average, this is a vital support network," it says.

The organisation received funding from the Foundation of Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR), with support from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, to undertake a series of “The Real Reconnections Tour” visits to regional communities in central west NSW, including Warren.

The aim of the tour is to build local networks and social support mechanisms required to better prepare for drought through the provision of eight informal mental health events focused on connecting regional men.

The organisation partners with businesses in regional communities like Warren Joinery and Hardware to make local visits possible. In Warren, Craig Lefebvre’s business will host the Tradies In Sight team who will be providing a free community breakfast onsite, along with conversations about health and wellbeing.

All are welcome.

As Craig told the Warren Star: “This visit can do nothing but help [local tradies].”

By TESS VAN LUBECK A COTTON picker training day was held at ‘Wambandry’ on Monday, March 17.

Eight cotton industry professionals and newcomers gathered at the Lombard’s property on the Wambiana Road for a day of safety and education on the operation of cotton pickers.

The learning modules began with safety before covering the workings of the entire picker machine, and how to maximise its picking capacity.

“Experienced people come to get a refresher,” co-owner and operator of Real Skills Ag Training, Melissa Smith, told the Warren Star.

“There are a lot of tips

and tricks to optimise efficiency,” she added.

The complexity of the newer machines means there is always more learning to be absorbed, she said.

The day aimed to enable cotton farm workers to balance safety with “relentless productivity”, Melissa explained.

“Operators of ten say ‘a l l t h is sa fet y stu f f is slow i ng me dow n’,” she sa id.

“We appreciate too much can be inhibiting, but the aim here is to target the sweet spot where safety meets productivity, safety is faster, start slower to fi nish faster,” she concluded.

G’day folks, I HAVE just spent much of the past two weeks out on the road but, this week, I am back in Parliament for two consecutive sitting weeks. I made my way across about 3000km from Sydney to Bathurst for an arms fair, to Nyngan, Nymagee, Cobar, Wilcannia, and Broken Hill, for the St Patrick’s Day races, making my way back to Sydney for the sitting week.

Free Virtual Care for Western NSW EARLIER this month, the Government announced it was extending its free virtual health care service to patients in Western NSW. The service will be limited to non-life-threatening conditions such as coughs, colds, fever, respiratory complaints, vomiting, diarrhea, minor infections, and rashes. The service will operate between 8am and 10pm and can be accessed by phoning Health Direct on 1800 022 222. Patients will be put through to a registered nurse who assess the patient’s condition and, if appropriate, refer them on to the correct service.

It isn’t meant to be a replacement for on-site health workers, of which there is still a major shortage in many regional, rural, and remote areas, but it is meant to deal with some of the problems with the health system.

In some towns in Barwon, there are no regular GP services, forcing people to either travel hundreds of kilometres or to turn up at the ED (emergency department) of their local hospital or medical centre. Having some alternative, albeit online, will prevent people having to travel for medical attention, reduce the number of people presenting at an ED and take some of the pressure off overworked hospital staff.

International Women’s Day SATURDAY, March 8, was International Women’s Day, and, a couple of days before that, I attended the NSW Women of the Year Awards 2025 at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, where Sally Edwards was honoured with the award for Barwon Woman of the Year.

Sally has long been a strong advocate for her community, working for positive change, environmental conservation, and volunteering for several different organ-

isations including working with the youth of Coolah. She has also declared her candidacy for a seat in the upcoming Federal election.

On International Women’s Day there were many events held around Barwon. Obviously, it was not possible to be at all of them, but my staff were able to make it to some.

In Broken Hill more than 100 women gathered for lunch at the historic Astra Hotel. Guest speakers included Gigi Barbe, Kirsten Linden, and Bree Borlace with music from locals, Grace Molloy, Molly Molloy, Grace Crannaford and Bonnie Aeschlimann. I want to thank the Domestic Violence Committee of Broken Hill for all their efforts in organising a wonderful celebration of women.

Cobar held a joint event with Peak Gold Mines (Aurelia) and the Business Association. Hosted by Sharon Harland, editor of the Cobar Weekly, it was a morning tea at which there were speeches by women prominent in local businesses.

In Narrabri they held an event on Wednesday, March 5 at The Crossing Theatre as part of Narrabri Shire Council’s CREATE Art Festival. The night was a celebration of resilience, progress and the power of dreams as they honoured International Women’s Day in recognition of the UN’s Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The Crossing Theatre Café was transformed into an enchanting indoor garden bistro, nestled amongst the vibrant CREATE exhibition.

Inquiry into Hunter New England LHD IN the February sitting weeks, I introduced a bill to split the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNE LHD) into separate Hunter and New England Northwest health districts.

That legislation was fast tracked by the Government, so that it could go to an inquiry to examine whether the rural and remote communities currently within HNE LHD would be better served by having their own health district, distinct from one that is run from a metropolitan area hundreds of kilometres away. That inquiry has gone to the Community Services Committee, chaired by Clayton Barr, the Member for Cessnock.

The inquiry will review the bill I brought to Parliament and the proposal to split the health district. The committee will explore the merits and implications of splitting the health district and make recommendations to the NSW Government in regard to the Bill.

I would like to see more

focus on Regional Hospitals and Services, which should be achieved by the bill. By making Regional Hospitals the sole focus of a separate Health District run from a rural headquarters, the only priority should be operating and staffing hospitals and delivering services that best serve regional areas.

Report into Menindee Fish Deaths EARLY in March, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) published the first progress report into the NSW Government response to the Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer independent review into the 2023 Menindee fish kill.

It showed that, of the 26 actions that were recommended in the Chief Scientist’s review, 10 are complete and the remaining 16 are underway.

One of the 10 completed actions is the review of the Water Quality Incident Management Plan, about managing the river when there is low dissolved oxygen, and to update it to ref lect lessons learned from water quality issues and mass fish deaths of 2022–23 and 2023–24.

Those underway include the building of a f loating hydraulic fishway designed to allow fish to migrate over barriers at Menindee. Construction began in December 2024.

Restored Fire Engine at Nyngan A N YON E who knows me, knows how much I like old cars, machines, f ire -arms, furniture and other ob jects that remind us of a bygone era.

So, it was nice to have the chance to see Nyngan’s 1924 vintage Garford-Hale 15 No. 142, which has been recently lovingly and immaculately restored by the Tamworth Classic Fire Engines club.

This machine now lives in the Nyngan fire station, the place from where she served the community in the years from 1947 to 1961.

W hile I was in Nyngan last week, Bogan Shire Mayor, Cr Glen Neil l, star ted it up and drove it out of the shed so we could take a look. There is just something g reat about an old f ire eng ine, and this one is a g reat example of its kind. W hat a g reat heritage item in the town, and a striking reminder of this bygone era of f iref ighting.

This restored eng ine will be an asset for Nyngan and the Bogan Shire for many years to come.

I have also heard that other Barwon towns, including Cobar and Walgett, have their own classic fire engines in need of some restoration. It would be great to see them one day lining up together as a tribute to the people who have helped keep

our communities safe during fires over many years.

Nymagee catch-up WHILE I was out on the road last week, I called into Nymagee, to chat with some of the locals from the Nymagee Progress Association, who raised several issues. One was their concern over the local police station, which has been unstaffed for some time. There are programs in place that should help to fill the position, but they will take some time, but I will discuss the problem with the Police Minister to see what can be done.

The town is also having some problems with the quality of the local water due to decaying infrastructure and with poor telecommunications in country areas.

I have already discussed the water issue with Cobar Council, and they have said they are working on a solution. The communications issue is a federal issue, but it is one I have been corresponding with the Federal Minister, but some of the problems will be sorted with Low Earth Orbit satellite technology over the next year or two.

Another thing they were asking about was the availability of grants, and I talked through what grant programs are available. My team and I will assist in connecting the Progress Association with those opportunities.

While it is good to meet with people face-to-face, and I get around to as many communities as I can when Parliament isn’t sitting, as you can probably appreciate it takes a long time to make it around the entire electorate.

Cobar Seniors Expo LAST week, I also visited Cobar where I spent a couple of days for meetings, a community catch-up and to see what is going on in town.

I was also there to attend the Seniors Expo, at which I had the privilege of presenting certificates to two outstanding local women who were awarded Seniors Local Achievement Awards. One recipient was local Councillor Lillian Simpson, a woman who is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get things done for her community. She has served on a range of committees looking after everything from rural roads to tourism.

The other recipient, Pauline Hunter, won her award for her successful efforts to reinvigorate the Brennan Centre, holding fortnightly morning teas, complete with entertainment. The morning teas became so popular, they extended them into a lunch event. Pauline makes sure everyone is included with her personal touch. Unfortunately, Pauline was not able to be there in person to accept the award — but we still celebrated her contribution to the community.

Congratulations to both women, they help to make Cobar a better place to live.

Cobar On The Move WHILE I was there, I met with the General Manager of the local council, Peter Vlatko, to present him with a Community Recognition Statement certificate congratulating the Council on its Local Government NSW Excellence in the Environment Awards, which they won for their solar array at their water and sewer plants.

Peter then took us to have a look at the Grand Hotel, a prominent pub on the main street that is known for its giant beer can over the entrance. The pub, built in 1898, has been closed for some time, but the council acquired the property back in 2023 and have since refurbished the exterior, and they plan to make it part of a tourist precinct.

The pub has also joined several outback hotels on a tourism trail called The Pub Route, which celebrates the character of some of the unique pubs of outback NSW. I also had a good catch up with some locals at the Cobar RSL Club.

It is great to see so many things happening in Cobar and my team and I will continue to help those things happen in any way we can.

Broken Hill Clubhouse FROM Cobar, I headed west to Wilcannia, to meet with some locals from the town and surrounding communities, before making my way to Broken Hill. There I dropped into the Broken Hill Clubhouse, an after-school tech space for children 12 to 17 where they can develop their own projects, working with computers, doing 3-D printing, creating podcasts or recording music. Run by community service group Social Futures, the Clubhouse is facing certain challenges with funding. Hopefully those problems can be resolved, and it can continue.

Hydrostor WHILE in Broken Hill, I also met with Martin Becker from Hydrostor, to visit the site for the planned Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage, which is now in its last stage of development. This technology uses water to compress air into an underground cavern, which can then be used to generate electricity.

Located adjacent to the Potosi mine, Hydrostor is part of what will be a mini grid incorporating solar, wind, batteries and the compressed air storage system.

W hen I visited the site there was not much to see, but I look forward to seeing the plant develop. This will be an important development for the city, and I will continue to report on its progress.

Transgrid Grants THERE were some worthy beneficiaries of Transgrid’s first round of grants in their Broken Hill & Far West NSW Community Partnerships Program.

One of the recipients is West Broken Hill Rif le Club, a club with a lot of history and tradition behind it, but one that has not let the present slip by and installed solar panels. When the in-

verter failed last year, they applied for one of the Transgrid grants and they have been awarded $8,300 to replace their solar. Congratulations to the club and I look forward to having a shoot with them on some future occasion when I am in Broken Hill.

Another recipient is LandCare Broken Hill, who are working on transforming Imperial Lake into a recreation park and sustainability hub. They have been given $5,000 to buy two generators to help them achieve their vision for the area. This is a project I have given my support to for several years and I look forward to seeing it progress.

St Pats Day Races MARCH in Broken Hill all centres on one of the biggest events on the social calendar, the St Pat’s Day Races and I was privileged to be

there for the celebrations.

The night before the races I went to the St Pat’s Day Races Cocktail party, which is almost as hot a ticket as the races themselves, attracting prominent citizens, business owners and even the mayor, Tom Kennedy.

The races are one the biggest events of their kind in Outback NSW and they attract horses, jockeys, trainers, punters and tourists from everywhere. The town buzzes for days before and after the race. The event is run by the St Pat’s Race Club and this year celebrated 60 years.

It was a hot day, but that didn’t seem to deter the crowds, who turned out in force. As a touching tribute to my late friend, Dave “Gal” Gallagher — former police officer and President of the Silver City Cup Races — the jockeys in the first race all wore a black armband as a mark of respect.

Remote Paramedics WE have seen some good things happening with regional paramedics in recent times, including an increase in numbers and in pay. Last week I met with a group of paramedics from Broken Hill who discussed some areas that still needed improvement. One major problem is that given their isolation, it is not always possible to find a crew for call-outs.

In a metro area, back-up crews can easily be called in from a neighbouring suburb to plug gaps, but that isn’t possible in a remote station like Broken Hill. They are asking for a “taxpayer funded roster” that will give the paramedics the flexibility to cover team members taking leave.

They are also asking that they be allowed to have paramedics on-call to cope with peak periods, like the St Pat’s Day Races, which

draws thousands of people and was held on a particularly hot day this year.

There is also the issue of career progression; to become an Intensive Care Paramedic (ICP). Broken Hill’s paramedics need to go elsewhere to train, with the likelihood they might never return. ICPs increase the survivability for patients through advanced medication and intubation skills.

Very soon, Paramedics with their extended scope of practice, will play an increasing role in taking pressure off local hospitals by dealing with patients who might otherwise present at an emergency department.

It is clear that some of the rules and policies surrounding paramedics need to change to suit conditions in remote stations like Broken Hill. I will be discussing this with the Regional Health Minister.

WE’RE almost a quarter of the way through 2025, and Warren Shire is in a period of steady

progress, with several important initiatives underway that will shape the future of our community.

once they are available for public exhibition.

W hile we continue to plan for the future, we are also responding to imme diate challenges.

The 3G network shutdown has caused frustration with mobile reception in the Warren Shire, and we’re taking proactive steps to address this, working closely with telecommunications companies and the Federal Government’s Black Spot Program to improve coverage.

We’re committed to ensuring our region is not left behind as the telecommunications industry evolves.

The recent storm in Nevertire has also left a significant impact on our community, yet once again, the residents have shown initiative and resilience in the face of what is not Nevertire’s fi rst damaging storm.

We are actively supporting recovery efforts, and Council is here to assist those affected.

As our country edges closer to a federal election, I encour-

age everyone to start to think about the key issues that matter most to our shire, such as rural infrastructure, telecommunications and support for agriculture.

Every vote counts, and if you haven’t already, don’t forget to register because your voice is essential in ensuring that the needs of regional communities like ours are heard at the federal level.

Farmer concern over unregulated water sharing plan LOCAL farmers in the Warren Shire have expressed concern over the NSW Government’s recently released unregulated Water Sharing Plan for the Bogan, Macquarie and Castlereagh catchments, citing issues with the mapping process and lack of consultation.

Water sharing plans exist across the state and establish rules for water management, including the limit of the total volume of water that can be extracted from local regional water resources.

The draft water sharing plan for this region was on public exhibition for several weeks late last year, coming straight off the back of harvest, several serious weather events, and amid the traditional closedown of local government and many other organisations at the end of the year.

The fi nalised plan is proposed to commence on or before July 1, 2025.

Warren points out wetlands issue THE Warren Shire Council sent a submission during the public exhibition period, highlighting a key concern: the designation of small wetlands across the landscape, conducted through a process solely through desktop mapping, without onground verification.

“We could not understand their methodology, and there was no ground-truthing,” said Warren Shire Council Mayor, Cr Greg Whiteley.

The Mayor, who’s also a producer in the region, emphasised the importance of ensuring water management policies are both accurate and transparent.

“Farmers should be properly consulted in decisions that impact their operations,” he said.

“Many [landholders] were unaware that wetlands had been designated on their properties, some of which were in the middle of cropping paddocks rather than genuine

wetland areas,” he explained.

A statement on the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Water website indicates that following “important community feedback from the public exhibition period”, the department has updated the draft prescribed wetlands map for the local draft water sharing plan. An updated map is now online and open for comment until March 23.

Submission process problematic THE submission process for comments on the draft water sharing plan also raised concerns, Cr Whiteley said, with the initial deadline set for the week after New Year. While an extension of 28 days was granted, stakeholders still found the timeframe challenging.

“The process was onerous, especially given the significant implications for farmers,” he said.

Following feedback from

Warren Shire and other stakeholders, it is understood that relevant authorities are now reassessing the mapping and reviewing submissions.

“While they started off defensive, it appears they are reconsidering aspects of the plan,” he said.

Warren Shire Council will continue to advocate for local farmers, ensuring their voices are heard in water management decisions that directly impact their livelihoods and the region’s agricultural future, Cr Whiteley concluded.

By WARREN CENTRAL SCHOOL STAGE Six students from Warren Central School (WCS) enjoyed an amazing time travelling to Bathurst last Tuesday for the CSU Explore Day. The trip allowed them to consider whether the regional tertiary education facility is the right fit for them post-school.

Credit to Miss Seymour for taking our students and organising the trip. The students enjoyed exploring the campus and discovering all the opportunities that Charles Sturt University has to offer.

Raced at Coonamble, Sunday, March 16 WITH a touch of arrogance, Gallant Star disposed of the opposition in the $150,000 Evergreen Turf-Western Racing Association Country Championship Qualifier on Sunday at Coonamble and is now an outstanding winning prospect for the $1 million Final on Saturday April 5 at Royal Randwick.

The big crowd at Coonamble had been privileged to witness one of the best wins on a central west track for many years.

Trained at Dubbo by Brett Robb for David Ringland and former test cricketer Kerry O’Keefe, Gallant Star at the

Gallant Star disposes of rivals in Country Championships Qualifier at Coonamble fi rst start for four months since winning the Barn Dance at Randwick, was surprisingly taken to the early lead by high profi le Sydney jockey Jason Collett.

In front turning for home, Gallant Star ($1.33 to $1.18 favourite) powered away to win by over four lengths from Rouge Moulin (Clayton Gallagher, $7.50) and Poisen Point (Zac Lloyd, $15) to give Brett Robb the trifecta.

Fourth was the Clint Lundholm trained Plenitude while fi nishing fi fth in the 13 horse field was the other Brett Robb trained starter Deion.

Rouge Moulin which chased hard from back in the pack has qualified for the fi nal while the three-year-old fi lly Poisen Point ran home strongly and looks to have a good future

over longer distances than the 1400 metres of the Qualifier.

In supporting races, Kody Nestor was the star jockey with a winning treble, Tainui, Yiye and The Great Armada.

After a nice run behind the leader, the Geoff O’Brien, Quirindi trained Tainui ($1.90 to $1.70 favourite) breezed home as a three lengths winner of the opening event, the 1400 metres Gilgandra Toyota /Inland Petroleum Showcase Maien Plate.

First up for Dubbo trainer Clint Lundholm after racing from Queensland stables, Tiye was quite impressive when winning the 1100 metres Super Maiden Plate.

Challenged in the straight, Tiye ($3.20 favourite) accelerated under Kody Nestor to draw away from Supreme

Style (Clayton Gallagher, $3.70) and Stern Reminder (Zac Lloyd, $3.60).

Third leg of the Kody Nestor treble was the Jane Clement, Armidale trained The Great Armada ($15) which pounced on the leaders in the straight and won by over two lengths from The Artefact (Chad Lever, $4.40) and Crown Legend (Aaron Bullock, $2.20 fav.) in the 1400 metres Benchmark 58 Handicap.

Following successive wins in the Picnic Cups at Bedgerabong, Condobolin and Tottenham, the Connie Greig trained Laisvas tackled TAB company in the 1600 metres Benchmark 66 Handicap.

FWAS holds “talented golf day” at Warren

By PPNS NEWS MEDIA STAFF REPORTERS THE Far West Academy of Sport (FWAS) is set to introduce golf to Warren, with a “talented golf day” to be held at Warren Golf Club later this month.

“We’re thrilled to announce our fi rst ever FWAS Talented Golf Day,” FWAS announced recently on social media.

“If you’re a passionate young golfer looking to take your skills to the next level, this is your chance!”

The event will be held on Friday, March 29, with an early-morning hit-off and the day is open to children aged 12-17.

Players must be regular golfers, preferably with a handicap, and must reside within the FWAS area.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your talent, gain expert insights, and connect

with like-minded young athletes,” the social media post said.

“Spots are limited! Don’t miss out—secure your place now!”

Administered by the NSW Office of Sport, FWAS currently offers programs in rugby league, netball, tennis as well as para-sport, individual athlete programs and future champions programs for athletes and coaches.

It is home to approximately 35,000 residents in rural and remote areas including the Warren, Bogan, Bourke, Brewarrina, Broken Hill, Central Darling, Cobar, Coonamble, Gilgandra, Lachlan, Walgett and Warrumbungle council areas.

Towns such as Warren, Gilgandra, Nyngan, Cobar, Bourke, Lightning Ridge, Broken Hill, Menindee, Wilcannia and Lake Cargelligo are in the area, with many other communities in between.

Bulldogs take plenty of positives from their return to senior rugby league TWO clubs walking away from a rugby league contest “delighted” isn’t a regular occurrence, but Saturday night’s return to rugby league for the Warren Bulldogs was no ordinary occasion.

For the fi rst time since 2016, a senior men’s match featuring the Warren Bulldogs was played at Victoria Oval on Saturday, March 15.

The Bulldogs took on the Narromine Jets and while the Jets won the men’s contest 34-4 and the league tag fixture 48-6, the Warren public was delighted to see the return of the 13-player code.

A full moon was also on display and a lot of happy faces were in the crowd to see the re-birth of senior rugby league in Warren.

That was the wash-up after the Bulldogs made their return to competitive senior rugby league, playing against a side they will face during the 2025 Castlereagh Rugby League season proper.

A crowd estimated by some at between 600 and 700 people fi lled Victoria Oval to see the Bulldogs in action.

Warren Bulldogs said via social media that they were delighted with the night.

“They say a full moon equals new beginnings,” the post said. “ WOW... wh at a s t a r t fo r t h e n ew Wa r r e n B u l l d o g s .

“Kudos to Narromine Jets for the trial game, we appreciate you travelling to Warren and officially starting our 2025 season.”

Warren Bulldogs secretary Amanda Brien was one of many club volun-

teers run off their feet on the night.

That meant she didn’t get too see much football, but she was still able to saviour the atmosphere and speak to many happy members of the community.

“It was a fantastic night, a really positive event,” Amanda said. “ It wa s g r e at for ou r c om mu n it y to h ave r u gby le a g ue b ack a s a fo c a l p oi nt for ou r c om mu n it y.”

Sales exploded for food and drink at the ground and exceeded expectations of the Warren Bulldogs.

Amanda said the club handled the large crowd well and will be even better prepared for when it operates the Castlereagh League knockout on Saturday, April 12.

“It was great for everyone, the players and the committee, to have a test run and have everything worked out before the knockout,” she said.

She added one highly pleasing aspect was having former Bulldogs players and committee members, some from as far back as the 1970s, attending the game.

“For those people to come and watch and be able to reconnect with the club, it was awesome,” she said. “As a club, we were delighted with the night. We didn’t expect the crowd that came, it was amazing.”
