By TESS VAN LUBECK WITH the empowering theme, “Accelerate Action”, International Women’s Day was celebrated and commemorated last Friday at Ellerslie Lane cafe. The motto for this year’s event sought to emphasise the urgent need to take decisive steps toward achieving gender equality, address-
ing the slow pace of progress, and empowering women and girls worldwide. The local event at our beloved local institution involved an early breakfast function with a good turn out of about 50 women of all ages. Live musical performances at the cafe were followed by talks from a panel of speakers who all revealed their personal experiences as ru-

ral women. The panel was adjudicated by renowned and much-admired local classical musician, Frances Evans. Local attendee, Grace Bestman, thoroughly enjoyed the get-together. “It was such a great atmosphere, especially for myself as it was really nice to see a lot of women of the Warren community coming together, especially to hear the stories,” Grace
told the Warren Star. “I’ve worked with Nettie (panel member, Nettie Slade) before, it was awesome to hear a bit about her past and stories,” she enthused. To hear the personal stories of so many local women was the highlight in many ways, she added. “I know some of the ladies were nervous, but it was really nice for them to get up there,
the audience was really supportive,” Grace said.
“It was really good to see women get together to support each other and great for Bonnie Storer to host with her family helping,” she concluded.
The formal part of the function was followed by a barbecue breakfast, fruit and granola and, of course, coffee!
