December usually means the start of snow season for our songbirds. They survive by puffing out their outer layer of feathers to trap warm air underneath next to their bodies. Finding a warm, sheltered tree to sleep in at night also can be important.

We can help them by putting out seeds, nuts and suet. These are highenergy foods for winter. A heated birdbath is also helpful since all birds need water. While they can melt snow in their beaks, it also lowers their body temperatures
