History Makers
History Makers Honorees
Since 2012, the History Makers Gala recognizes citizens whose outstanding, lifelong contributions of time and talents have helped to make McLean County a better place to live.
Deanna Frautschi & Alan Bedell Two McLean County residents with working class roots continue to make history as major community and philanthropic leaders. Deanna Frautschi and Alan Bedell both impact many lives with their generous souls, nurtured by their love of nature. Deanna has a legacy of involvement serving on over a dozen non-proit boards including United Way of McLean County, where she served as board chair, campaign chair and on various other committees. She most recently headed United Way’s Covid Relief Task Force (2020-21). This effort directed emergency community resource allocation and mobilized food distributions with other agencies. Through Women United, she has also helped seniors and those without computers in setting up Covid vaccine appointments. Alan’s volunteer efforts began with youth baseball in Downs and blossomed with the Cornbelt chapter of National AMBUCS building wheelchair ramps throughout the community. He also
Deanna’s zoo connection brought the two a special task – feeding the baby snow leopards, Sabrina and Necee.

helps provide Amtrykes, customized tricycles for those with special needs. His enthusiasm led Alan to greater leadership when he served as national AMBUCS president. He traveled the country towing a trailer promoting the organization and helped found 10 chapters in Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Providing Amtrykes gives him a great smile and a lump in his throat every time a child receives a tricycle. Alan has also been an active Midwest Food Bank volunteer the last 10 years. Alan worked at State Farm after graduating from Illinois State University with a business administration degree and completing his military service. Deanna graduated from Bloomington High School and then received a communications degree from the University of Illinois. She spent 33 years at COUNTRY Financial, leaving as Executive Vice President for Human Resources and Communications. She most appreciates that COUNTRY gave her the responsibility for helping direct corporate resources to meet community needs.
Limited Magazine | June 2022
Besides United Way, Deanna is deeply involved in the Multicultural Leadership Institute and serves on its advisory board. She has also served on the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation Board and serves on the Parklands Foundation Board and the Miller Park Zoological Society Board, where she was a past president. The pair have chaired numerous fundraisers, including Zoo Doo, Red Cross Evening of Stars, and Carle Cancer Center events. They also use their own ive-acre property, which is certiied as having good wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation and Illinois Audubon Society, to host small group tours and fundraisers in a relaxing educational environment. Deanna and Alan sponsor scholarships for AMBUCS physical therapists, Illinois State University, the University of Illinois, Heartland Community College, and the Multicultural Leadership Institute. “We value our commitment to the community and the long-lasting effects,” Alan said, He added that they enjoy using their resources to beneit fellow community members.
History Makers
Myra & George Gordon “Tikkun Olam,” a phrase in Hebrew meaning to “repair the world,” sums up George and Myra Gordon’s many community contributions, including education, recycling, and planting trees. Both were raised in progressive Reform Jewish households, with George’s father a rabbi who served campus communities through the Hillel Foundation, and Myra growing up in Memphis, Tennessee in a literate family of printers. George’s father served students in Madison, Wisconsin, and Philadelphia, where George spent his childhood. An early job with the Girl Scouts brought Myra to St. Louis and eventually to Normal. George began teaching political science at Illinois State University in 1970 and the two married in 1972. Like many, they saw ISU as a brief sojourn but instead grew as the community did, raising their two children here, Dan and Rachel. Looking for a volunteer opportunity in the early 1970s, Myra became involved in Operation Recycle, where semitrailers were parked for monthly one-day pickups of recyclable goods. She reached out to local faith communities to see if each could volunteer one Saturday a year to staff a drop-off location. In the early 1980s, then Mid-Central Community Action director Carol Reitan offered Myra a part-time job, using recycling as a job training platform for those who had problematic work records. This
eventually expanded both Operation Recycle and Myra’s employment to full-time. Operation Recycle is today’s Ecology Action Center (EAC), with which both Myra and George have had long board tenures, with George serving as McLean County’s representative for almost 20 years. George taught multiple classes at ISU, from the basic introductory classes to his specialty in public administration. George worked hard to ensure that his classes covered a full spectrum of political thought, welcoming student input, no matter their political afiliation. Students who completed his classes and then pursued successful careers in government and in the private sector make him especially proud. George irst ran for the McLean County Board in 1994, losing that time, but winning two years later. When he joined the Board, there were only three Democratic members. George quickly intuited that he needed to collaborate and build relationships across the aisle. This gained him respect, and
although the majority party chooses committee chairs, Republican County Board chair Mike Sweeney asked George in 2000 to head the Land Use and Development Committee. Myra stepped away from Operation Recycle in the late 1980s. She then completed a master’s degree in English at ISU, which opened up the technical writing ield to her and led to an internship that turned into an 11-year career at State Farm. During her years there, she served on the board of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation (IPCF). When IPCF needed an interim executive director after Myra had retired from State Farm, she answered the call and found her dream job. An anticipated two or three months as interim led to six years of service. The IPCF grew under Myra’s leadership. When she began, the organization had $7,000 annually to share in community grants; when she left, that igure had grown to more than $100,000. Together with the IPCF supporters, she initiated the Women to Women Giving Circle, Youth Engaged in Philanthropy, and helped establish the Foundation as a iscal sponsor for smaller organizations.

At times Dad could be a little cantankerous a little rough around the edges . . . but there was something about him when it came to that pond. I recall his love of color his penchant for beauty his perception of symmetry an innate sense of what “looked good” as he used to say. He placed the sandstones just so, the flowers arranged to blend with the koi swimming in rainbows in the warm June sun— I see him now on the threshold of heaven rough edges sandstone-smooth satisfied that in what he created he left his sons a legacy that life is good.

BLOOMINGTON GOLD CORVETTES’ RETURN TO BLOOMINGTON IS The Grand Sport is a very rare and special car and will most likely draw people from across the country to come see it.
Be ready for A LOT of Corvettes around town as the Granddaddy of Corvette Shows returns home to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Bloomington Gold is returning to its hometown of Bloomington/ Normal next month. The show will take place June 10, 11 at Illinois State University and will include parts from when the show was last held in Bloomington in the 1990s. “Fifty years is a big deal and we wanted to do something/move somewhere that really meant something as special as 50” says Guy Larsen, Bloomington Gold President. “[Special] not just to the history of the event, but to the longtime attendees who have attended Bloomington Gold again and again over the past 50 years,” Larsen continues. For starters, the 2022 Gold Collection will be held in the Brown Ballroom of the Bone Student Center, the same venue that the Collection was housed in last time it was in Bloomington. When planning the

50th event celebration, this setting was pursued by Guy Larsen for the location of the Gold Collection; the rest of the 2022 Show was formed around this idea! The 2022 Gold Collection will feature a Gold Salute to the Gold Collection with some of the finest cars from past collections as well as some cars that have rarely been seen before. The Gold Collection will kick off with a ticketed event on Thursday, June 9 at 6pm. This is when attendees will first be able to see the rare and beautiful cars being displayed. The 2022 Show will also offer a Road Tour on Saturday night that includes portions of the original Road Tour route. The tour will leave ISU and head to downtown Bloomington before heading out to Lake Bloomington via Historic Route 66. The tour will end in Uptown Normal with a free party for attendees and residents. Anyone with a Corvette or Camaro is invited to register to participate in the road

tour and party. Besides the Bone Student Center, the Show will be housed in Redbird Arena, Horton Field House and the grounds in between the two buildings. This will allow the Show to continue to use an indoor/outdoor venue for the different segments of the event such as certification judging of Corvettes and Camaros as well as over 100 vendor displays. There will also be seminars each day with speakers and topics that are unique to Bloomington Gold. On Friday evening, Bloomington Gold has rented The Normal Theater for a public showing of The Quest followed by a Q & A with the documentary’s director/producer, car restorer, current car owner and son of Chip Miller. This will be a unique event for Bloomington Gold attendees and the surrounding community. Bloomington Gold can trace its roots back to 1973, when a group of Corvette enthusiasts gathered in Bloomington, to display their cars and swap extra parts with one another. They called it the Bloomington Corvette Corral, a one-day show. The event now draws 3,000+ Corvettes and 15,000 attendees over two days. The move to Bloomington is expected to be a big draw, not only to car enthusiasts but to the general population as well. Tickets can be purchased in advanced for the Show as well as for the Gold Gala, Road Tour and The Quest by going to BloomingtonGold.com. Tickets will also be on sale at the gates. The show opens at 8am each day and IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Nature
SQUIRREL TIME STO RY A N D P H O T O S BY D E A N N A F R AUT S C H I Fox Squirrels are prolific in Central Illinois and the young from winter’s brood born in February or March are just entering the squirrel population. There are usually two to four in a brood with mom caring for them until they are 10 to 12 weeks old. The young are almost as big as mom by the time they leave the nest. Although most are reared in nests made of leaves and twigs high up in trees, some find other places, especially in winter, to rear their young. We have four Screech Owl boxes often taken over by nesting squirrels in the winter months. This year I was lucky enough to see mom coming and going as she cared for them in one of the boxes. Better yet, I got to view and photograph the two young ones before they left the box to live on their own. The next cycle for raising young will happen in early Fall although it’s unlikely we will see our owl nest boxes used by squirrels because it’s warmer then and our screech owls are often using them.

DISTRESSED COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE MARKET THAT NEVER HAPPENED
W
hat is a distressed asset? A distressed property is property where the loan amount is greater than the actual value. That’s the long and short of it.
Distressed properties were supposed to arrive at commercial real estate’s door in 2021, but it never materialized. Research by Real Capital Analytics (RCA) shows there were low levels of troubled CRE assets that hit the market, despite the dire predictions and investors’ expectations that 2021 would produce opportunities to buy properties at steep discounts. RCA economist Jim Costello writes, “The Covid-19 crisis led to a flurry of fund announcements where investors planned to use the distressed investment playbook that worked so well after the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). These fund managers raised money on a mistaken belief that this downturn would be the same as the last. To date, distressed asset sales have been minimal as the nature of the crisis was uniquely different from previous downturns.” Distressed asset sales were limited in 2021. In fact, they represented a smaller share of the market than at the 30
same point after the onset of the GFC. The GFC crisis started in December of 2007, distressed asset sales already accounted for 7% of the market, eventually peaking at a 20% share of the total. By comparison, as of Q3 2021, about the same timeframe after the GFC commenced, distressed sales represented less than 1% of total sales. To be fair, the current crisis arrived differently than the GFC since it presented as a shock to the real economy. By comparison, the earlier challenge was a shock to the financialmarket.Still, investors, financial market regulators and the government reacted swiftly to bolster the economy when the pandemic first arrived by enacting stimulus in the form of the CARES Act. Those actions helped ease the fears of Americans and stabilized the anxieties across financial markets by continuing a flow of capital to debt markets. It provided debt to the market, which in turn stemmed distressed sales simply because owners were rarely forced to unload a property because it was still producing cash flow. Still, commercial real estate properties are not all likely to escape unscathed
Limited Magazine | June 2022
from the current clouds of the pandemic economy. There are fundamental changes emerging across the asset classes that are expected to shape the structure of the office work environment, impact consumer behaviors, disrupt the flow of goods across the supply chain, and bring changes to the travel sector. Those factors will add up to adjustments in income expectations at the property level that need to be accounted for in performance metrics. It will take an extended period of time for all of those shifts to occur too, thus how they all play out and who the winners and losers are will also not be known for years. The majority of CRE assets and markets remain healthy, but avoiding distress may not be unavoidable for some, especially those already in trouble before the pandemic arrived.
