Mardi Gras TUESDAY, MARCH 1 DOWNTOWN BLOOMINGTON PHOTOS BY JUSTIN HURT

Downtown Bloomington was covered in gold and green and purple as Bourbon Street came to Bloomington for a night of great food, great music and lots of revelry. Members of the Illinois Wesleyan Jazz band provided a Second Line that promenaded the streets, followed by a parade of festively dressed party-goers.

‘Doctors in Concert’ fundraiser returns to in-person event April 29th supporting vital playful learning Doctors in Concert returns in-person to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Bloomington at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 29. Presented by OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois, the event features physician musicians performing classical and contemporary melodies on piano, violin, cello and guitar while the audience enjoys food, drink and a silent auction—all to raise funds for health-related initiatives at the Children’s Discovery Museum. “Events such as Doctors in Concert help us deliver the positive, informal STEAM learning that has empowered students, families and teachers in Central Illinois since 1994,” said Beth Whisman, CDM Executive Director. Play has never been so vital for a generation of young learners. In response to achievement gaps in math and reading exacerbated by school disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools are focusing heavily on those subjects—with little-to-no science

happening in classrooms this year. “This is why informal learning settings such as the Children’s Discovery Museum are so important right now,” Whisman said. Museums are being called on nationwide by teachers and families to provide valuable STEAM learning that cannot take place in classrooms or at home. “We hope we can count on our community to turn out and support our physicians who have practiced all year to perfect their performances and help our museum reach more children,” said Event Chair Elise Albers, who is the Population Health Manager with OSF HealthCare Children’s Hospital of Illinois. Tickets, sponsorship information and a list of doctors performing can be found at www.childrensdiscoverymuseum.net.

Christie Clinic Department of Neurology

Physicians and other health care professionals have had to learn “on the job” about the effects of this new virus, this includes neurologists. All over the world doctors have reported on the neurological effects of COVID-19. As it turns out, there are many neurological complications of COVID-19. You may ask, “what are neurological problems?” and “how does the virus SARS-COV2 cause them?” These are good questions. First, neurology is the study of diseases and treatment of the nervous system; the brain, spinal cord, nerve, muscle, and neuromuscular junction. Most people are familiar with the most common effects of COVID-19, headache, fatigue, and muscle pain. Although these are most likely indirect effects of the virus, symptoms caused by the virus triggering inflammation in the body, they are still considered neurological symptoms. These symptoms typically are short-lived, just like any viral infection, lasting days or at most a few weeks. But in some people, these symptoms persist for months, socalled “long COVID”. The cause and treatment of this is yet unknown. The next most common neurological

effects of COVID-19 are the loss of the senses of taste and smell. These are also symptoms that can be seen in other viral syndromes. Here it is believed that the virus infects the lining of the airway and mouth, and disrupts normal sensation. In the case of COVID-19, however, it is from here that the virus can be dangerous. In the nose and close to the front and bottom of the skull, it is believed that SARS-CoV-2 can directly pass through the skull and enter the brain. This can lead to devastating complications like stroke In people over 60 years of age, it is reported that about one-third can experience confusion or even delirium with COVID-19. It also reported that about one out of fifty people over 65 with COVID-19 may suffer stroke. A stroke is when there is an interruption of blood flow to the brain. In the case of COVID-19, it is thought that stroke occurs because of abnormal clotting in the blood leading to blockages of one or even many arteries in the brain. It has been reported that there can be blood clotting in the veins of the brain as well. When stroke occurs there can be paralysis, loss of vision, inability to

speak, loss of balance, seizures, or even death. Further reports are that mortality (the risk of death) in persons over 60 years with more than one neurological complication from COVID-19 was 2530%. It also possible that SARS-CoV-2 can pass from the blood into brain or even travel along a nerve into the brain. This can lead to other neurological effects of COVID-19 such as the virus causing meningitis or encephalitis. These are infections in the covering of the brain and spinal fluid (meningitis) or the brain itself (encephalitis). With these problems come severe headache and neck pain, nausea, vomiting, clouding of thinking, coma, seizures, and death. SARS-CoV-2 can also attack one or many nerves, leading to pain, weakness, numbness, tingling. The brain can also be injured if there are bodily complications from COVID-19 like breathing failure or failure of the other organs like the kidney or lung. Sometimes the brain can be severely injured if there is severe loss of oxygen for prolonged periods of time. This is called hypoxia, and unfortunately brain injury from this can be permanent. Recovery from neurological complications from COVID-19 takes time, sometimes weeks or months. Thankfully, it seems we are currently in a quiet period in our struggle with the virus. As our knowledge and experience with COVID-19 grows, we will be better able to help our patients with and hopefully, there will be new therapies to prevent and treat COVID-19 infection. Advertorial

The OSF HealthCare Mission is all about you

In August 1875, a group of Catholic Sisters fled religious persecution in Germany, where they faced imprisonment and exile. The next year, they arrived in Peoria, Illinois, speaking little English and relying on the kindness of people in the community. Through their own extreme poverty, the Sisters quickly recognized a desperate need for health care. They began caring for patients out of a small home, with Sister M. Frances Krasse making a promise to God:

“Lord, we will never turn away any whom you send to us for care.” In July 1877, The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis formally established a hospital based on a simple Mission: to serve the sick and dying “with the greatest care and love.”

Less than three years later, the Sisters started a hospital in Bloomington, now known as OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center.

But our Mission is the same. From the clinics to the labs, hospital rooms, kitchens, classrooms and innovation spaces, we are dedicated to transformational health care that helps you live your best life. To learn more about the OSF Mission and how it can serve you visit osfhealthcare.org/yourcare

OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center, 1880

Today, after 145 years, we are bigger and health care is more complex. The OSF Ministry includes 15 hospitals, almost 150 clinical care sites in Illinois and Michigan, and more than 24,000 employees – all of whom are considered Mission Partners. Our two nursing colleges develop front-line health care workers for the present and future. We have Mission Partners solely dedicated to innovating new care technologies and better ways to make health care accessible and affordable.

A young patient is embraced by Sister Judith Ann Duvall, O.S.F., chair of the OSF HealthCare boards.

“KNOW WHEN TO HOLD ’EM, KNOW WHEN TO FOLD ‘EM, KNOW WHEN TO WALK AWAY, AND KNOW WHEN TO RUN” “The wise person, even when remaining quiet, says more than the fool who speaks.” (author unknown) My belief is that the words above have application in many facets of life other than around the card table. I base this primarily on my 13 years as a trial lawyer and 32 years practicing as a commercial real estate broker. Though there are many examples available, I will cite one each from my trial practice and my commercial real estate practice. In the 1970’s, I represented a defendant in a difficult criminal matter in a McLean County jury trial. As I am giving my closing argument near the end of the trial, one juror with arms crossed, in the back row, began shaking their head side to side as if to let me know “No Way – You are Cooked” – the verdict was Guilty! Subsequently, we appealed the verdict and sentence to the Appellate Court – it did not reverse the verdict and sentence but did send the case back to the trial court for resentencing by a different judge and we received a favorable outcome for my client. Now, let’s examine a commercial real estate transaction from some time ago. My long-time clients asked me to list an excess vacant commercial/industrial lot for

sale. Over time we reduced the price to what my clients deemed to be a firm and non-negotiable price. Quite some time later, I received an email from a broker that I was not familiar with. The email presented me with a “Residential One-Step Contract Form” at substantially less than our ‘firm price’. The seven-page ‘form’ was titled in bold on page one as a Residential Sales Contract. Also on page 1, was a notice that it is intended for purchase of 1-4 unit previously occupied residential dwellings, including condominiums and zero-lot line units. The form also called for acceptance by my clients within a time frame that could not be met. I advised the Broker that we had to have the ‘firm’ price agreed to and that the acceptance time needed to be extended into the following week so my client’s attorney could review it prior to signing, not after signing as provided in the original document. Late on the following day, I received an email from the broker indicating the client would just move on and buy something else if we did not accept their offer. After thinking about it, I concluded this was

a last-ditch effort to see if we would respond in their favor. My clients had made it clear to me that the ‘firm’ price was ‘it’. So, I decided to not contact the broker that evening or the next day to see what might happen. The next afternoon, I received a text from the broker asking if the ‘deal’ was dead? I responded via text that ‘It is dead, Thank You!’. A short time later the broker called me and indicated that we had a deal per the Seller’s terms. All went well and we went forward preparing for the closing, which did take place. Life will always have its challenges, but with experience (the great teacher) you will ‘Know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em.
