Normal Rotary Rural-Urban Night

Wednesday, June, 22 Ropp Jersey Cheese Farm, Normal Photos provided to Limited Ray and Carol Ropp hosted the Normal Rotary Club and their guests enjoyed the sunny evening, the supper and the chance to judge four Lincoln ewes brought by Mike Rader. The featured speaker was Rich Guebert, president of the Illinois Farm Bureau, who describes himself as “a recovering dairyman.” He raises corn, soybeans and wheat at his farm in southern Illinois. Many urban residents of Illinois incorrectly think that most of Illinois farm land is owned by corporations, he said. Most farmland is owned and operated by families. Illinois Farm Bureau has an “adopt-a-legislator” program, which links state lawmakers to downstate farmers for a taste of the ag experience and to exchange ideas.

BY MICHAEL ESCOUBAS

The world is verdant as green shadows blend with blue and white high on the distant horizon. The yard is a terrace of lush green carpet, stately oaks and tasseled corn making ready for harvest. In late August crickets sing their mellow songs, flowers boast their brightest colors wearing gowns of yellow and red. We light the first light of evening, the yard, a room in which we rest and, for good reason enjoy being wrapped in the shawl of Nature’s bounty, a gift not taken lightly where, being there together, is enough.

ExtraOrdinary Woman

MEET OUR ExtraOrdinary

WOMAN: Story written by Charlene Homan, EOW Board Member. Contributions were made by her nominator Barb Whiteman.

Rosemary serves as the president of Living Well United Senior Center, a grassroots organization that converted a closed-down Casey’s in LeRoy into a thriving senior center. She also serves on, the Mercy Ministries board, the J. T. Crumbaugh Library Board of Trustees, Coordinator of the Elizabeth J. Crumbaugh Assistance Program, Regent of the DeWitt Clinton Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, and as board president of the Empire Township Historical Museum. Rosemary’s influence is felt by every community member of every age. One in-progress project that she is assisting with unites the local food bank, churches, the LeRoy School Life Skills class, and the Living Well United Senior Center. With her leadership, the seniors created a healthy recipe book with ingredients generally found at the food pantry. They coordinate food drives when necessary and assemble the unprepared meals for distribution. Rosemary coordinated this creative initiative to help food pantry customers make the healthiest choices possible. Wearing a different hat, Rosemary

helps Faith in Action reach out to small community residents who need assistance in driving to and from medical appointments. Rosemary is an assessor who visits those who request services from the nonprofit. A new initiative of Rosemary’s is in honor of her mother and father. “I know the toll it can take to care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Barb Whiteman and Rosemary created The Support Squad. Our goal is to offer a weekly service where caregivers can drop their loved ones off for some respite. I remember my father being overwhelmed at times and resorting to bringing my mother into the emergency room. I hope that by offering a small break, we can support our caregivers who support our loved ones,” Rosemary revels. “There is hardly a person in our rural communities who doesn’t know Rosemary and love her,” adds Barb. “So many have been positively influenced, inspired, and encouraged by her. She works so quietly behind the scenes, it’s as if she makes magic happen. In reality, she is sacrificing hours of time and tons of energy coordinating people/resources from past work and life

experiences or diligently making new friends. Rosemary is always working for the greater good of others, and our communities benefit from her tenacity.” When not volunteering or working as a substitute teacher in reading recovery, Rosemary enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, Staci Riddle, and Deborah Klamrzynski, and six grandchildren, Jordan, a music teacher in the Fieldcrest District; Madison, a traveling nurse, Kaitlyn, a senior in high school; Peyton, a junior; Brooke, 7th grade, and Jack, 7th grade. Congratulations to Rosemary on being the ExtraOrdinary Women Project BN’s quarterly feature. We appreciate your dedication to our community! EVERYONE’S TALKING INFLATION AND INTEREST RATES, BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

I

n June 2022, the Fed increased interest rates by 75 basis points—its largest move since 1994, and the Fed anticipates more increases later this year. We are seeing the highest inflation since the early 1980’s. According to Ginger Chambless, Head of Research for Commercial Banking at JPMorgan Chase, “By raising rates through this year, the Fed is trying to get a handle on inflation and slowly pull some of the excess liquidity out of the economy. I think it makes sense for the Fed to take a gradual approach. This way, they can see how the economy holds up along the way, as opposed to a more drastic increase, which might cause undue panic in the markets.” While inflation is at a 40-year high, interest rates are still below what we saw in the 2000’s at 6.5% and record highs of nearly 20% in 1980. From a historical perspective,

rates are still very attractive, but hard for the new investor group that has only known the sub 4% interest rate cycle. Investors are going to have to adjust their thinking and their proformas. An increase in interest rates obviously makes borrowing more expensive and impacts an investor’s desired return. An investor is forced to offset the higher cost of financing with a lower purchase price on real estate. This will have an impact on cap rates which we have seen compressing over the last few years. But the market is still competitive and sellers haven’t pivoted from the high demand of the last few years, knowing in part that investors want to buy real estate to hedge inflation. So, investors will be focused more on increasing rents to drive their desired returns. As we move forward in 2022, we may not see the movement in values right

away, but sellers and buyers will soon enough find themselves at a crossroad of having to understand debt market pressure of increased interest rates and what buyers can (and will) actually pay. Sellers today are still in a great position to sell. Buyers are looking at the uncertainty in stocks, crypto, NFT’s and holding cash and real estate is still considered the safer investment alternative; but we may be seeing a market peak soon. If you have questions about selling or buying in today’s market, reach out to a commercial real estate professional in your community. 2022 Pulse Nightclub Memorial Observance

Saturday, June 11 300 Block of North Main, Downtown Bloomington Photos by Justin Hurt Prairie Pride Coalition, the Bistro and McLean County Moms Demand Action Against Gun Violence are co-sponsors of this event that memorializes the people who died at the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shootings in Orlando. This outdoor observance included the reading of the 49 victim names, performances and words of reflection. Attendees stood in the street on chalk-drawn hearts and held signs with names of the people lost on June 12, 2016, when a shooter entered the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando and produced the deadliest incident in the history of violence against the LGBTQIA+ community. Fifty-three additional people were injured that evening in an act that also targeted the Latinx community.

History Makers Gala

Presented by the McLean County Museum of History Wednesday, June 15 ISU Brown Ballroom, Normal Photos by Carlos T. Miranda The guests of honor at the 2022 History Makers Gala have poured themselves into the community, but they recognized they weren’t alone in their endeavors to give back. Deanna Frautschi, Alan Bedell, Myra Gordon and George Gordon received the distinction Wednesday night and were honored along with those who had been quietly recognized during a virtual ceremony last year: Carole and Jerry Ringer, Marilyn and Bob Sutherland and Barbara Stuart. Tom Eder, president of the McLean County Museum of History Board of Directors, called the four honorees the sort of people one can look to as “an example of the highest use of our lives.”

McLean County Chamber of Commerce Wednesday, June 29 VisionPoint Eye Center, Bloomington Photos by Carlos T. Or maybe the chance to win great prizes or shop the newest collections. Whatever the reason, the crowds came early and left reluctantly
