erfect. It’s the expectation of every bride. And nobody does perfect like Palace Events, Bloomington. Mike Pohlman and his staff have been doing perfect for the past 7 years. Last year they helped with almost 300 weddings ranging in size from 20 to 400 guests. They work with all kinds of budgets and all kinds of venues. They can do anything…. except ordinary. Palace Events helped give Melissa Simpson (pages 8,9) her fairy tale wedding. See below for photos from Melissa’s reception and pictures of some of the amazing Palace Events weddings.

Weather worries? Palace Events offers chic, glass-enclosed flaming to ward off cold and can cool off a venue with stylish fans.

Melissa Simpson’s sparkler exit took lots of organization. Extra long sparklers, a “handler” to get guests out the door, then 8-10 people to light sparklers. Lots of logistics, but it’s a thing of beauty when it works. And it always works when Palace Events coordinates a reception. Photo by J. Kelley Photo

Have a breathtaking outdoor location? Make it part of your reception with a clear tent dressed with greenery, well-hewn wooden tables paired with elegant gold Chiavari chairs. Simple and stunning.

Palace Events offers the latest in technology from custom lighting to drone photography. Get photos from impossible angles with their high-flying cameras. And Palace Events can light up an intimate room or bathe an entire building in a paisley heart.

Home is where the wedding is Story by Melissa Simpson, photos courtesy of J. Kelley Photo

in every wedding. Lucky for me, my mother has vast experience in wedding planning. My mom is well known as the “hostess with the mostest,” and has planned weddings ever since I can remember. She also threw two amazing weddings for my sisters in 2007. I dreamed of the day when I’d be able to plan a wedding with her, and when it came true, we became a team. But first, we had to get on the same page. When my mom Matt and Melissa Simpson with their beautifully threw my sisters’ handcrafted lemonade stand made by the bride’s father weddings, Pinterest Fred Basolo and family friend Tom Holbrook. and Instagram didn’t our wedding day is commonly known exist. It was much harder for my mom to wrap New Yorker returns to her hometown to get her head around my vision because of all the married. content I provided through emails, texts, etc. When my husband proposed to me last year, I learned very quickly, in planning a wedding I began planning for “the most important day from Chicago, you must pick up the phone and of my life.” But how does a New York City communicate properly. girl who recently moved to Chicago set out to For instance, I sent my mom a link to a achieve such a fete in Bloomington-Normal? wedding planner’s image gallery that I wanted Telling my story will hopefully shed some to draw inspiration from, which led to her light on wedding planning, and through my calling my sister and crying “Melissa is hiring experience you will find tips from a recently a wedding planner from California!” So my married woman. first piece of advice is to stop texting, and start The mother of the bride plays a critical role talking. where I was meant to have our wedding. As the princess of the family, I loved the idea of getting married at Ewing Cultural Center. The problem we encountered was they don’t allow bands, which was a must-have for us. (In fact, we booked The Matt Stedman Band from Chicago within the first couple of weeks of planning, and travel to Bloomington is included in their rate!) We chose the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts as our reception venue. My family has a long history with the BCPA, and I grew up performing there. The grand lobby and sprawling ballroom sold it for me. After booking the BCPA for July 30, we still struggled with finding a venue for the ceremony. We looked into Evelyn Chapel, but the time slots didn’t make sense for our timeline. We had to get creative, so I reached out to the director of the Ewing Cultural Center to see if they’d make an exception to host our wedding ceremony, even though they are closed to weddings during The Shakespeare Festival. My m o m

always says “It never hurts to ask,” and she was right because they let us host our fairy tale wedding ceremony in July. Our town has evolved over the years in fantastic ways. Uptown Normal was the perfect setting to host out-of-town guests traveling from coast to coast. My in-laws hosted the rehearsal dinner and welcome party at Medici in Normal restaurant, which was lovely and walking distance from the hotels. Through investigative work on Instagram, I got the idea to put our names on the Normal Theater marquee. “Congratulations Melissa & Matt” was displayed on the marquee throughout the weekend and provided an unforgettable photo opportunity. Being a bride on a budget, the only way to achieve some of my musthave elements was to create them ourselves. I enlisted the help of my father and our dear family friend to create three large arbors for the head tables and sweetheart table. They also made a custom lemonade stand, and shelving units that were displayed behind the bars. I fell in love with an escort table I found on Instagram. It consisted of a hedge wood backdrop and custom lettering that read “Love is a Walk in the Park.” We hired Palace Events for our rental and day of needs. Palace

Melissa and her bridal party looking out from Ewing Cultural Center. Events agreed to create the hedge wood backdrop, and I ordered the lettering from Etsy. Our product was an exact replication of the celebrity wedding planner’s escort table. Speaking of Palace Events, we loved working with them. Mike Pohlmann and his team insist on nothing less than perfection, which is very reassuring to a bride. Don’t be afraid to ask your talented friends and family to lend a helping hand. Enlisting the help of friends and family not only saves money but it is a great way to include them on your special day. We used J. Kelly Photography, who is a longtime friend. My aunt made golf ball cake pop wedding favors, my friends performed during the ceremony and reception, my mother-inlaw made jams for welcome bags and the list goes on. Through a lot of blood, sweat and tears, I got our fairy tale Bloomington-Normal wedding. The biggest thing I learned through the process was that we put our own stamp on our wedding. It’s like the saying: “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.”

And the groom wore… polyester

Forget Jamaica, Hawaii, Italy or France. When Dinah Saleh and Billy Rayner planned their destination wedding, they chose the “Las Vegas of the Black Sea,” otherwise known as Batumi, Georgia. Married in the famous Batumi Botanical Gardens, Dinah’s mother created her dress, with “petals” to play off the botanical theme. And on her feet, the bride wore a pair of white Doc Martens. Billy Rayner’s 1980s suit came from a New York vintage store. This plaid polyester beauty cost $800 and had never been worn before. And it needed no alterations. The suit is quirky, unique and definitely a show stopper, much like Billy.

Ladas over limos

No limousines or horse and carriage for Billy and Dinah Rayner. The ride from the wedding ceremony to the reception venue was via old Soviet cars. Following a popular Georgian custom, wedding guests all pile into cars, where the drivers compete to see who can get to the reception first. Loudly honking horns, weaving in and out of traffic, and cutting each other off, this scary ride was a great start to a joyful and raucous reception.

I now pronounce you... By Tricia Stiller, photos provided to Limited

I

nternet resources like The Knot bridal guide, and Pinterest have thrust new trends into the marriage business. From color palettes to unique venues, couples today are creating one-ofa-kind experiences for their big day. One of the trends that has become quite popular is having a loved one perform the marriage ceremony. “We wanted our ceremony --- the entire evening, to be meaningful, personal,” shared Troy Clark and husband James Due, who asked me to become ordained to officiate their nuptials this past November. I was both honored and terrified by the request. There’s a lot of pressure to get things just right. “The best way for us to make sure that happened was to have our closest and dearest friends with us every step of the way,” shared Clark. “With your creativity, we couldn’t imagine anyone else. We knew you would mean every well-crafted word. “We really wanted the emphasis to be on the fun and excitement for our friends and family, and for us, too,” he continued. “Logistically, all the shuffling around and moving from place to place always seems so distracting and can be exhausting. So we opted to have everything in one place. It reduced a great deal of stress and allowed everyone to just enjoy the day with us.”

Officiant Tricia Stiller shares a hug with newlywed Troy Clark. “We knew we wanted to be married outdoors by the river,” shared Jes Freesen, who asked family friend Toni Lenzi to officiate her wedding. “Kyle and I didn’t have a church home, and we didn’t want to go to a courthouse – that seemed too impersonal. Having an important person in my life officiate our ceremony was the right choice. It was perfect.”

12

February 2017 — Limited

Lenzi has gone on to officiate for several other friends, and those ceremonies have run the gamut, from large productions to small intimate gatherings. “Each ceremony is personal,” shared Lenzi. “It’s about the love story. Weaving the personal anecdotes, adding a bit of humor. I truly enjoy taking what the couple shares with me, adding my own observations, and then giving that back to them. Seeing their reaction, watching their joy – that’s my favorite part.” Lenzi also enjoys seeing the love, watching the jitters, and helping turn those into giggles during the ceremony. “To lead a couple into their new life – to be entrusted with this ability – it is such an honor.” Deborah Risberg recalls her reaction when her friend Jeni Bratcher asked her to officiate at her wedding to her husband Dan Crafton. “I kept saying, ME? You want ME?,” laughed Risberg, who met Jeni at a yoga class. “Jeni and I just clicked, and I truly love her spirit. Still, I was really touched, humbled and deeply honored to be asked.” Risberg did a lot of online research in preparation. “The process to become ordained is really simple. You just go online and answer a few questions. But I wanted to do the best job I could, so I looked for inspiration and guidelines. I didn’t want there to be any surprises.” Lenzi agrees, the process is pretty simple, but cautions that each state, and even counties can have different rules when it comes to the legality. “Be sure you check with your county,” she advised. “It’s your signature going on all Val Laymon and Jean Michalski with that paperwork.” officiant Toni Lenzi “I really admire people who take their marriage – the concept of marriage and their relationship so personally, and with such commitment that they work to create such a meaningful start to their life together,” offered Risberg. “Being a part of that is a beautiful Jes and Kyle Freesen with Toni Lenzi officiating thing.”

M

y initial conversation with Julie Johnson went something like this: Me: “Congratulations, Julie, you’re Limited magazine’s Employee of the Month! I’d like to come talk with you. Can you spare a few minutes?” Julie (after a long pause): “Wait, what did you say? Who did this? Why? Do I have to talk to you?” After a few minutes of pleasant conversation, I convinced Julie that reaching an honor like she has was not all that commonplace in today’s world, and that she should enjoy her time in the spotlight. “I have no concept of time, really” said Julie Johnson. “I guess I’ve been lucky to find a place to work that is so supportive of its employees and their families. And I get to do what I love, which is even better.” That place is Casey’s Garden Shop, where Julie has worked as a floral designer, department manager and merchandise buyer for 23 years. “My kids grew up here,” she shares. “We’re a family.” “Having Julie on our staff is phenomenal,” offers Casey Lartz, the third generation of his family to hold the business reins. “We have always placed our emphasis on customer service, and Julie gets that. She sees the bigger picture. She understands the bottom line. We’re with our customers for all the significant events of their lives, from cradle to grave. Julie will do whatever it takes for our customers. That’s important.” “I just come in and do my job,” a humble Johnson offers with a shrug. “I didn’t plan this as my career. It just sort of happened,” she recalls. “I was in high school, and we had a career day. We visited Jean’s Flower Basket when it was still in Normal, and I remember thinking “this is a beautiful place.” I went to college, following the business path, like everyone else, but something kept calling me back to that career day. I told my parents how I was feeling, and they supported my decision to move in a different direction.” “I signed up for a 3-week course at a school in Indianapolis,” she continues. “I don’t even know if it’s still there, but this was many years ago. I learned the basics in floral design, and in customer service. Eventually, I found myself here at Casey’s, and I learned most everything on the job.” “Julie is people focused,” Lartz added. “She’s not one to brag, but really, she helped us break into the full-service floral business. She does it all: plantings, arrangements, designs. She’s good role model for the staff. “Well, I used to do it all,” she adds with a laugh. “Now, I leave the ladder climbing to the younger people. My knees just can’t take it as easily as they used to.” “You know,” she continues, “We’re a community business, inside and out. Casey’s is, and always has been, a place where you can foster your creativity. We all have creative power here. Over time, we all learn, and develop our own style. It’s my job to make sure that all of our products have a consistency; that the standard of excellence is met before anything leaves the store. We help each other. We learn from each other. We share ideas. We collaborate. You never know where your next inspiration might come from.” One place that is inspiring her customers is the online web source, Pinterest. Today’s floral consumer, especially brides-to-be, come in with very specific items on the wish list for their big day. “I’ve done some things in recent years that I would never have even imagined,” Johnson Julie Johnson with Casey Lartz admits. “It’s good. It’s creative. It can also be challenging to recreate things exactly, based on cost, the limitations of the venue… any number of things. But we try to get the desired outcome as best we can. We (almost) never say ‘no’.” So, even after 23 years, Johnson is still experiencing on-the-job training. “You have to stay on top of the trends,” she explains. “I research a lot, so I can see what’s coming. I like puzzles. I like to make things fit.” As we finished our visit, a beaming young bride-to-be and her mother arrived for their appointment with Johnson. I smiled as I said good-bye, knowing they were in excellent hands. I’m sure their special day will be beautiful.

Spotlight on Spider VeinS appearance effect. Other factors that can cause spider veins are hormones, weight gain, heredity and sitting or standing for long periods of time. While spider veins can be uncomfortable, they are mostly visibly annoying, and can make you feel self-conscious when wearing garments that expose your legs. You are not alone!

P

erhaps you noticed them on your grandmother when you were growing up, but you never thought they’d appear on your legs. You may have thought that you had a slight bruise at first, until it never actually went away and more “bruising” appeared. There’s no doubt about it; you are one of the 60% of Americans who have spider veins. These dilated vessels, visible on your skin, occur in both women and men, people in occupations that require a lot of standing throughout the day. Spider veins are dilated blood vessels that are visible underneath the surface of the skin. They can have the appearance of individual lines, or branch out in clusters that come across with a bruise

The first step is to have an evaluation by a vein specialist to determine if there is a cause and it is not just a cosmetic problem. The good news is that spider veins are primarily a cosmetic issue, and will cause only minor discomfort if any. Even so, you may be unhappy with what they have done to the way your legs look. Their appearance can replace your formerly smooth skin with blue, red or purple splotches that resemble spider legs or little road maps. This is where cosmetic sclerotherapy comes in.

Cosmetic sclerotherapy can remove these problematic veins during an inoffice procedure. Under magnification or a special vein light, a solution is injected into the veins using a very small needle. The treated vein then eventually closes itself off and disappears from the skin’s surface. Approximately 1 month to six months following a series of treatments, it will be as if the spider veins were never there! If these symptoms sound familiar and you suspect that you may be suffering from vein disease, why not find out for sure from the leading vein treatment center in Bloomington? Call The Vein Specialists at (309) 862-4000 to schedule a Consultation with one of our physicians or request an appointment online at www.ILveins.com. We have convenient locations in Bloomington, Peru, Springfield and Str Streator.

The ABCs of a

WEDDING

RECEPTION Story by Mary Ann Ford, photos provided to Limited

J

ustine Easter and Greg Shelton are planning a simple but elegant, black-tie wedding and reception this September. They want to have a nice meal for their 75 guests, the traditional first dance and “daddy-daughter dance,” and an overall “great experience.” But, they also want to stay within their $10,000 budget (including the honeymoon). Like most couples, Easter and Shelton looked at a lot of facilities that could accommodate their dream reception. “Parke Regency (Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington) honestly had the best accommodations and pricing,” because of its new ABC program, said Easter of Champaign. “The whole idea is providing flexibility for our guests,” said Parke Regency owner Krishna Balakrishnan. “Millennial brides are budget friendly. They want a very good facility but don’t want to spend a whole lot of money. “We provide a platform for everybody,” he said. “They shouldn’t be limited. It’s all about their day.” The ABC program, which stands for “bring your own Alcohol, bring your own Beverage and bring your own Caterer,” was introduced about four months ago and allows couples to merely rent the Parke Regency facilities while providing their own alcoholic beverages, caterer and decorations. Balakrishnan said the option for alcohol alone would save $2,400 for a reception with 100 people. A BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage) host bar would be about $1,420 which would include the alcohol the couple would purchase at a retailer, the liability insurance, bartender, bar setup fee and mixers. While Easter and Shelton opted for an alcohol-free event (they will bring in their own soft drinks), they took advantage of Parke Regency’s option to bring in a caterer for the meal, resulting in a savings of between $5,000 and $8,000, Easter said.

18

February 2017 — Limited

Justine Easter, Greg Shelton “All others had a $5,000 to $8,000 minimum for food, beverage and space,” commented Easter. Parke Regency staff “was willing to work with us and give us exactly what we wanted at our wedding.” “I think the biggest thing is the Parke making it easy and flexible,” added Shelton, of Champaign and formerly of Bloomington. Parke Regency General Manager Terry Stalsberg said in addition to saving money, the catering option allows couples to have their favorite food or even a specialty food. Parke Regency still offers the option of providing everything for brides and grooms. And the ABC and BYOB programs aren’t only limited to couples planning a wedding and reception. Stalsberg said the options are available for any event at Parke Regency from a birthday party to a corporate get-together or even a non-profit ticketed event. “Using different people who are good at doing different things is a merge of talents,” said Balakrishnan of the idea of allowing outside caterers and alcohol sources. “Once it all comes together, the winner is the guest.” In this case, it will be Easter and Shelton who so far have come in under budget for their dream wedding. That leaves more room for them to plan their honeymoon.

Wedding By Jonell Kehias

T

he bride is the undisputed star of the wedding. The mother of the bride, attendants and even the groom play a somewhat secondary role. And that’s exactly how it should be. But sometimes, there are scene stealers who upstage the star — otherwise known as the flower girl and ring bearer. Kelly Rayner, who is a wedding coordinator in New Orleans, La., advises “Children 6 or younger should walk down the aisle together so they can keep each other going and to lessen the stage fright. Ultimately, the ring bearer and flower girl will be show stoppers and are a great, comical addition to any wedding ceremony. The younger the better … and cuter!” Melissa Simpson (featured on pages 8, 9) had nephew Collin Hayden, 8, and niece Grace Hayden, 6, for her ring bearer and flower girl. Melissa explained: “Grace loved the experience and was so excited to share the day with us. We took her to pick out her dress and she told me that her dress was going to be prettier than mine, which was quite funny.” Nell Geiger had two flower girls, nieces Camille Mischen, 9, and Adell Locke, 18 months. “I’m glad I had a backup plan,” said Nell, “Adell did not want to go down the aisle with Camille. Both her mom and dad were in the wedding so they knew there was a possibility that they would have to walk her down the aisle; which they did and it worked out perfectly. Camille stole the show by herself.” Michelle Pazar’s beloved nephew Thomas Weathers, 4, was her ring bearer. “My nephew, Tommy, was a fabulous ring bearer!” bragged Michelle. “He did a perfect job walking down the aisle, sitting quietly during the ceremony and had fun during introductions. He was the first person I danced with on the dance floor. He was a social butterfly and practically stole the show!

Cultural Tourism

C

ultural To u r i s m plays a major role in the travel industry today. What is Cultural Tourism? Crystal Cultural Tourism Howard describes travel and visitation activities directed at an area’s lifestyle, their arts, heritage, architecture and other elements that helped shape their way of life. These unique visitors make destination choices related directly to a community’s artistic and historical offering. Cultural Tourists include multiple attractions during a visit and will stay longer in the community. An Economic Impact Study of Arts and Culture in McLean County, Illinois conducted by Diego Mendez-Carbajo, Ph.D. at Illinois Wesleyan University, indicates that in Bloomington-Normal the 16 largest Arts and Culture organizations have an average of $6.2 million in annual

direct impact on the McLean County economy. The Bloomington-Normal Area provides a wealth of opportunity for Cultural Tourism. Our area boasts major attractions and events that showcase the quality of life we have now and have had in the past. Major attractions that include the David Davis Mansion, our unique festivals, the McLean County Museum of History, the Cruisin’ with Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center, Miller Park Zoo, the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts, the McLean County Arts Center, the Coliseum, our community theaters, the Looking for Lincoln sites and the Children’s Discovery Museum are all destination drivers for visitors. Opening later this year will be another Route 66 attraction, Ryburn Place at the Sprague’s Super Service Station. We are also privileged to have 22 art galleries that offer a wide variety of art. The Convention and Visitors Bureau provides information and maps for these attractions on our

website at www.visitbn.org. Tourism is what Cultural distinguishes our community from others, and in BloomingtonNormal we have much to celebrate and promote. We can provide the opportunity for authentic cultural exchange between our locals and our visitors. Let’s give these visitors a memorable experience so they might share our story with others. For more information on cultural and historic events visit our website at www.visitbn.org or give us a call at the Bloomington-Normal Area Convention and Visitors Bureau at 665-0033. Crystal Howard, Director of Bloomington-Normal Area the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), encourages groups to use the CVB as your one-stop shop for organizing your next event. We can help you coordinate the details of your next meeting, from site selection to post-convention follow up. Please contact the CVB event team at 309-665-0033 or via email at info@visitbn.org

Commercial Buyer’s Brokers

Y

ou saved your money and did your homework. You’ve been to the bank, and your business plan screams success. Now all Laura you need is the Pritts perfect location. You’ve been driving the market and perusing the internet for months (or years!) And you know where you need to be, but there are real estate signs everywhere. Which spaces are the right size? Which locations can you afford? Are they zoned correctly? Do they have a grease trap? How high are the ceilings? Do they have any use restrictions? How much parking will they allocate to you? As you contemplate calling 10 different brokers to ask about 15 different spaces, you wonder if there might be a more efficient way to find the right space. Luckily, there is. A knowledgeable commercial broker can help you wade through the options, and may even know of space that’s not currently on the market. If you are familiar with the residential real estate market in illinois, you may be familiar

with the concept of a buyer’s broker who works on behalf of a buyer (or tenant) to find the right property. In mclean county and surrounding areas, a buyer’s broker is typically compensated through the listing agent, so there is frequently no cost to the buyer. Your broker should establish this relationship and clarify this for you upfront. A good buyer’s broker will work really hard on your behalf, and he or she may ask you to sign an agreement that confirms your relationship. Always read everything before signing, but typically these agreements are simply to protect both sides, confirming that the broker will work diligently on your behalf, and that you will agree to work through your broker. When you drive by a new sign on the “perfect” property, a quick call or text to your broker is all you need. No need to waste time setting up a showing appointment with the listing broker, just to find out your brand new specialty oven won’t fit in the space, the ceilings aren’t high enough for your gym equipment, or the zoning doesn’t allow outside storage for your raw materials. If you are buying a franchise, oftentimes, a franchise’s real estate

department will allow a franchisee to work through a local broker who is familiar with the market. The real estate department typically reserves the right to approve the location, but they will work together with a local broker to find the right site. A good buyer’s broker can provide so much more than basic property information. A buyer’s broker can help you determine what market lease rates are, who typically pays for different operating expenses, how much landlords are likely to contribute towards tenant improvements, whether there are any red flags with regard to zoning, who you need to contact at the city and/or the county before proceeding, and much more. Before you try to do it alone, consider enlisting the help of a professional. It might not cost you anything, and it might save you significant money, time and frustration. Laura Pritts is a licensed broker, of Coldwell Banker Commercial Heart Of America Realtors in Bloomington. For more information on commercial real estate contact laura at (309) 662-3370 or lpritts@cbhoa.Com.
