Heaven on earth has a name — Tahiti Kimberly McCormick for Suzi Davis Travel
T
urquoise waters, clear skies and an abundance of activities makes Tahiti one of the most talked about vacation spots. Whether you’re there to get wet, relax or get married, you’ll love everything about your island escape. There’s no better way to begin your island getaway than with a tour. Experience the culture of French Polynesia as you visit small villages on a circle-island tour, either with a rental or guided bus tour. Or, go a little crazy, and explore on a 4x4 safari, nature hike or horseback ride! If you prefer the water, take the motorized canoe, powerboat or even a sailboat. Better yet, if you want to take it all in from up above, the helicopter tour will give you the perfect view. One of the most popular activities is shark feeding. This may be enjoyed on most main islands, and after a short trip into the lagoon, you’ll be able to float or stand in 4 to 7 feet of clear water. Although secured behind a rope, you’ll be able to witness an experienced guide hand-feeding docile sharks. And, if you aren’t a swimmer, you’re able to witness this thrilling event from the boat. If you’d prefer to be all in, you’ll love the world-class snorkeling and diving.
With the clear waters and hundreds of dive sites, including oceanic drop-offs, sunken ships and even lagoon drives with marine life, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.
Prefer to relax? With luxurious spas, surrounded by the natural beauty of Tahiti, the offerings are unlimited! Enjoy fresh-flower baths, herbal rain showers or a banana tree leaf body wrap. You may also enjoy a picnic on your own motu, a tiny islet in the lagoon, with gourmet meals either set on a table or under a coconut tree. Oh, the wedding! A traditional
ceremony for couples is available for those wishing to say “I do” in the islands. Whether you’re being married for the first time, or wish to renew your vows, the ceremony is unforgettable. The groom is brought to the beach location in a canoe, and the bride is carried on a rattan throne. The ceremony is made even more unique with music and dancers while a Tahitian priest performs the ceremony. (And, don’t worry, since 2010, weddings are legally binding for United States citizens!) Location is everything. After experiencing all you can during the day, you’ll want to enjoy the night in a traditional thatched-roof bungalow, with first-class amenities. Built above the gorgeous lagoon waters, you’ll be able to view tropical fish through the glass floor as they swim below. And, with your private balcony, sunsets you only dream about and breakfast delivered by canoe, this one-of-a-kind experience will have you planning your next vacation before you leave. Contact the knowledgeable staff at our local Suzi Davis Travel office located at 2415 E. Washington St. in Bloomington for assistance. You may also contact them via telephone at 309-662-0455 or on their website at www.suzidavis.com All information taken from http://www.tahititourisme.com/discover/tahitianexperiences.asp

Bill Flick Your June 2015 BNI (Bloomington-Normal Index): • Almost 1 mph more: That’s how much windier each day in Bloomington-Normal (11.1 mph per average day annually, according to the NWS) than Chicago, “the Windy City” (10.3 mph each day). • Three times fewer speeding tickets: What state records show that Bill Flick Illinois State Columnist Police write on holiday weekends. • A pair of strong shoes or boots: What those in nearby Washington ravaged by an EF4 tornado in November 2013, say you need to store in your basement but never gets mentioned in any preparedness list. Because the Washington tornado hit in the morning, many ran to their basements in socks, slippers or barefooted ... and emerged two minutes later to a world of broken glass, nails, wood shards, etc., everywhere. • $219: Value of one square foot of Veterans Parkway, based upon the cost of resurfacing it. • Red high heels: At this April’s “Evening of the Stars” American Red Cross of the
Jennifer Killian, Kellie Pickler
Heartland gala at the Uptown Marriott, they got Jennifer Killian of Bloomington up on stage, singing a duet with one of her idols, Kellie Pickler, as they sang the Pickler hit, “Red High Heels.” Running up to the stage as Pickler sang the song, simply wanting to show Pickler she even wore red high heels to the event, Pickler then asked her up. (That’s Pickler and Killian in a “selfie” that the two took on-stage.) • On the curb: Where eccentric but world-renowned author and former Illinois State University English instructor David Foster Wallace would put his TV. Wallace would, before each book or major work of essays, buy a television to watch as recreation during the writing process and then, in sort of a cathartic end release, get rid of it when the work was done. • Gravity: Why the eastside of Bloomington-Normal is more developed. B-N slopes west to east and thus gravity makes moving water and sewage easier. • A soybean barrel: How jurors in McLean County were picked until the 1950s. That’s when a jury commissioner was blindfolded and pulled jurors’ names from it. The rolling barrel, in fact, still sits in a room up on the fourth floor of the McLean County Law & Justice Center. • 26 million gallons of water: As summer nears, the amount of water Twin Citians go through in just a day during summer’s “peak.” Bill Flick is at bill.flick@lee.net

The streets of Uptown Normal were packed with fun-loving folks enjoying the warm weather, upbeat music from Mike & Joe, great food and drink and even a hot dog eating contest.. Many of these folks were wearing Live United T-shirts, as volunteers collected donations from the crowd.

Living your healthiest life: an annual physical You are feeling pretty good. You eat a pretty healthy diet and now that the grass is growing again, you will be getting some exercise. You don’t think you have time, and don’t see the need to visit a doctor. Now is the time to start paying attention to your health. “In my career as a doctor, I see many patients whose health problems may have been avoided with a little bit of preventive self-care and maintenance,” says Dr. Raju Shanmugan, family medicine physician with Advocate Medical Group in Bloomington. “Paying attention to your health, even when you feel fine, can make staying well easier in the long term.” The best time to establish a baseline on your health is when you are well. Partnering with a physician can keep you on track and on the lookout for signs of future health issues. An annual physical allows you and your health care provider time to discuss family history, monitor any changes in your health, and consider what health screenings might be right for you. More than that, though, it is important to establish a relationship with your health care provider and start tracking your health. The partnership between you and your doctor will help you feel comfortable and confident with their expertise when you face a difficult health issue. It doesn’t take a lot of time, and you can get in to see a doctor today. Advocate Medical Group now offers

ity Chic was the theme of this year’s Saints Alive gala, and chic it was, as the Mariott has never looked more glamorous. More than 300 guests nibbled on delicious hors’ d’oeuvres, enjoyed fine wine and spirits and got the chance to bid on a dazzling array of goods and services.e. And because it was all about raising money for Central Catholic High School, attendees were extremely generous with their bids. The-Fund-A-Need portion of the auction brought in more than $57,000 for the purchase of a new 14-passenger “Rocket” bus. The live auction also raised $57,000 with two Masters Golf Tournament VIP packages going for $5,700 each. An adorable Cockapoo puppy, Madison, helped raised $1,750 and the silent auction brought in another $25,000

It’s not vain to care for your veins
Y
ou’ve ignored the tingling, the aching, even the cramping in your legs for long enough. It’s time to think about your vascular health. Veins are responsible for transporting nutrient-poor blood back to heart for oxygenation, but unlike arteries, they rely on the calf muscle in the leg to push blood up against gravity. Normally, valves in your deeper leg veins keep blood moving forward toward the heart. If you suffer from chronic venous disease, however, vein walls are weakened and valves are damaged. This causes the veins to stay filled with blood, especially when you are standing. Most people with venous disease don’t realize they have it. However, if left untreated, venous disease can lead to: • An increased risk of blood clots. • Skin discoloration. • Hardening of the skin. • Ulcer formation on the lower leg. Treatment for venous disease can range
from lifestyle changes such as increased exercise and the use of compression stockings, to surgical procedures such as angioplasty in the leg. “I want to improve the quality of life of my patients,” says Dr. Beth Tumilty, cardiologist with Advocate Heart Institute. “Having the opportunity to treat patients’ venous disorders allows me to do this.” If you experience the following symptoms, it is a good idea to be screened for venous disease. • Dull aching, heaviness or cramping in legs • Itching and tingling • Pain that gets worse when standing • Pain that gets better when legs are raised • Swelling of the legs
• Redness of the legs and ankles • Skin color changes around the ankles • Varicose veins on the surface (superficial) • Wound that is slow to heal on the legs or ankles Treating venous disease can improve your quality of life and prevent further injury to your vascular system, along with improving the look of your legs. Physicians with Advocate Heart Institute in Normal are offering free screenings for venous disease on June 2 and 16. Beth Tumilty, DO, FACC and Siddharth Gandhi, DO, specialists in cardiovascular health will hold onsite screenings using ultrasound technology. If you have these symptoms of venous disease, call 1.800.3.ADVOCATE or visit advocatehealth.com/bromenn and click on “Find a Class” to learn more and sign up for a free screening.

Five Friends Encouraging the community to grow together With a combined 226 years in the community, the phrase “deep roots” is more than an advertising slogan. Casey’s Garden Shop and Florist, Grieder Landscaping and Garden Center, Growing Grounds, Sunburst Nursery/Penn Landscaping and Wendell Niepagen Greenhouses are community institutions. These stores, and their owners, are synonymous with plants, trees, landscaping and even fish and furniture. But more than the products they sell, these businesses are famous for their knowledge, customer service and personal attention they give everyone who walks through their doors. This year these businesses have joined together to form the Five Friends, an extension of their Christmas “Four Friends Open House” event. With the addition of Sunburst Nursery/Penn Landscaping, the Five Friends goal overriding goal is to encourage people to shop local and support small and locally owned businesses. We asked the owners about the Five Friends concept and business in general.

Casey’s Garden Shop and Florist
1505 N. Main St., Bloomington Owner: Casey Lartz Years in Business: Casey’s is celebrating its 66th year on Route 66. What are the most significant changes you have experienced over the years? Technology has changed the way consumers buy products and services. Casey’s has developed an e-commerce website that allows customers from literally around the world to order flowers and have them delivered to a doorstep. Casey’s offers delivery in the Bloomington-Normal area 7 days a week. What is your biggest challenge? National chain stores have established themselves in consumer’s minds. Casey’s strategy is to offer superior service and products at reasonable prices. This strategy has fared well for the past 66 years and we trust it will serve us well in the future. Tell us about Five Friends: The basic philosophy of the local “Friends” is that each business offers unique products and services to the community. In many product areas we do not compete with each other. For example, Casey’s does not sell trees, whereas other “Friends” do. The Friends do see large national chains as direct competitors and choose to join together to promotion locally owned businesses.
Grieder Landscaping and Garden Center
1804 N. Towanda Barnes Road, Bloomington Owners: Denny and Patty Grieder Years in Business: 41
Denny and Patty Grieder What are the most significant changes you have experienced over the years? Customers are more informed today, largely because of the Internet. They have higher expectations. What is your biggest challenge? Weather. Where do you see your business in the next five years? Growing and changing to meet the needs of our customers. We do our very best to feature the latest in products and services. We began offering the quality patio furniture several years ago and that has been very well received. What are the benefits of being part of Five Friends? We all have our niches and we support each other and strive to keep people shopping locally. That is good for us and our community.
Dale Naffziger
Growing Grounds
1610 S. Main St., Bloomington Owner: Dale Naffziger Years in business: 32 What are the most significant changes you have seen in your business? Gardening has become a huge business and everyone jumped in. All of the box stores have garden plants and every grocery store sells plants. Gas stations sell mulch. No matter how good are you are at something, it still hurts when you slice the pie 50 ways. To them it is a side business. Local garden centers make a living selling plants and helping customers plant success. We want it to work. We need it to work. We try to sell better products. What are your biggest challenges? There are so many new plant introductions, it is impossible to carry everything. And sometimes people get information from the Internet which may or may not be correct. And people are so busy, many do not take
Tyler and Rick Penn
Limited Business the time to plant something correctly the first time. It is less work to make the effort to plaint it right the first time than to replace it and start over again. Most plant failures are water-related. Sprinklers and irrigation systems do not give plants the personal attention they need. Plants need time and attention, just like children, to get good results. Where do you see your business in the next five years? Running a retail business takes a lot of energy. The challenge is to keep that going. Our season is very concentrated and intense, if we can keep up we will keep growing, literally. What are the benefits of being part of Five Friends? Our big push is shop local. When you shop locally ALL of the money stays here in Bloomington-Normal. We all grow together. Also, our slogan, “We have deep roots in our community: is true. All five friends have lived here most, if not all, of their lives. Our families do have deep roots in the community.
Sunburst Nursery/Penn Landscaping
2407 S Main St., Bloomington Owners: Rick and Patti Penn Years in business: 35 What are the most significant changes you have seen in your business? The competition is much greater. The garden centers compete with the large box stores as well as Internet shopping. There is 10 times the competition in the landscaping and lawn maintenance industry than there was 35 years ago. What is your biggest challenge? Finding additional good employees to continue the legacy for the next 35 years. It takes a special person to be interested in the green industry. Where do you see your business in the next five years? We would like to double in size. What are the benefits of being part of Five Friends? With the camaraderie
of Five Friends we send customers to each other which not only benefits the friend, but it satisfies the client.
Lee and Anne Niepagen
Wendell Niepagen Greenhouses
2010 Fox Creek Road, Bloomington Owners: Lee and Anne Niepagen Years in business: 52 What are the most significant changes you have seen in your business? New, exciting plant introductions and a broader range of generations shopping for plants. Also an increase in edible plant sales. What are your biggest challenges? Getting the younger generation to shop at small businesses and staying competitive with pricing and varieties. Where do you see your business in the next five years? We anticipate at least a 10 percent increase in sales every year. We hope every year we grow personally and professionally. What are the benefits of being part of Five Friends? We have band together to show the community that even competitors can be friends and work together. We all have our own specialties: unique qualities that set us apart. It’s small business against the “big boxes.”

Club counselor: Educating and motivating investors Story By Jonell Kehias Photos by Thomas Rakestraw and Erin Woods
O
n the second Wednesday of every month you’ll find a Room Reserved sign on door of the private room at McDonald’s on Oakland Avenue in Bloomington. About 6:30 a.m., between 8 to 15 women begin filtering in, most with iPads, laptops and folders. At 6:45 a.m., the group quiets and the lone man in attendance stands and begins to talk. He’s well dressed, somewhat slight, with a boyish charm that belies the depth and breadth of his financial knowledge. He is Ryan O’Connell, senior financial advisor for Merrill Lynch. The “senior” part of his title refers to his 11 years in the financial services industry. At 40, he could be the son of some of the women in attendance. The group of 15 ladies is the Women’s Investment Group, or WIGS, as they refer to themselves. Founded in 2008, this group has grown to 15 members that include business owners, provosts and directors of finance. For some, this is their first dip into the stock market. “I just used to give someone my money and say ‘make it grow,’ laughs Vicki Tilton. “Ryan wants you to be an involved, educated investor. “Ryan talks a lot about the lemonade stand,” says Sue Lakin. Whether explaining P/E ratios, dividends, stops or calls, he has the ability to take unfamiliar terms and Ryan O’Connell concepts and make them relatable. The group has a goal of growing earnings by 15 percent each year, which means they will double their investment in a five- year period. It’s the mantra that O’Connell will come back to again and again, forcing the group to focus on investing based on facts, logic and numbers. “By encouraging us to have an exit strategy when we purchase a stock, it takes the emotion out the transaction,” says Julie Payne. “It disciplines us to not hold onto a stock because we

like the company…or the product.” Word of the success of the Women’s Investment Group spread among the Bloomington Sunrise Rotary Club Dennis Brtva, John Carter (O’Connell and several of the WIGS are members of Rotary.) John Carter, also a Rotary member, contacted O’Connell to see if he would be interested in working with a men’s group. And O’Connell was. So on the last Monday of every month, you’ll find O’Connell and the men’s group sitting at a table in Shannon’s Five Star, discussing stocks and options and calls. “This gives us a chance to experiment,” explains member Michael Powell. “Things like calls and puts and stops.” “Ryan does a nice job of breaking down investing,” says club member Bryan Caldwell. “He puts it in terms we understand.” “While it’s our money we are investing, there is not one meeting that Ryan is not more prepared than we are,” adds Carter. In fact, O’Connell spends between 3 to 4 hours before each meeting, reading, researching and prepping for any anticipated questions. O’Connell likes to be prepared for anything that might be thrown his way. Neither club pays Ryan for his time or expertise. When asks why he spends the early morning and considerable “free” time on these groups, Ryan explains “These
Women vs. men (according to Ryan)
The women are quicker to come to a consensus and are more focused on reaching their goal. They will take bigger risks. The men are more concerned about not losing. They debate longer. And the men keep track. They still bemoan the fact that one of their group members didn’t like airlines so they passed on buying Southwest Airlines stock when it was $12 per share.
Ryan-isms
“Buy what you know.” When there was a dip in the market — “Ladies, there’s a sale at Wal-Mart.” When not particularly enthusiastic about a stock “It’s like being the smartest kid in summer school.” When the group is especially sluggish in the morning “I’ve done enough talking. I want to hear from you.” Explaining P/E ratios—“Earnings is the horse that pulls the cart.” Explaining anything — “OK, so you have a lemonade stand...” If you are interested in talking to O’Connell about starting an investment group of your own, email him at ryan.o’connell@ml.com groups are composed of the some of the most vibrant community leaders. I don’t stick my face out there on billboards or TV. These clubs allow me to cultivate relationships.” “Ryan has made me more of an optimistic investor, “explained Carter. “I have more faith in the market now.”

he Multicultural Leadership Program of McLean County held its sixth graduation on April 25 in Illinois State University’s Brown Ballroom. Twenty-six graduates were handed certificates of completion. D. Dontae Latson, president and CEO of the YWCA McLean County delivered the keynote address about growing up in a neighborhood ravaged by street violence and crack cocaine. He credits a few caring adults, especially his grandmother, in helping him grow from being “an angry young man to someone who believes in the power of the indomitable human spirit, the beauty of community, and the strength of connectivity.” This year’s participants learned to enhance their leadership skills during nine months of classroom and interactive lessons. Small teams were involved in supporting community projects and developing solutions to challenges facing the Community Health Care Clinic,

Fun Day at the Airport Prairie Aviation Museum Sunday, June 14th Noon to 4:00pm Motorcycles, Cars, Antique Vehicles Visit with Butch Schroeder (weather permitting)
This morning I plodded in pajamas and bare toes toting my full water pitcher, prepared as an offering for my hanging blue Fan plant. The tall grass washed my feet as Jesus might. I was met by a congregation of glad-handed Hostas greeting and touching me, choirs of Clematis robed in purple, jovial Jonquils clad in yellow, sun-facing Spiderworts, and sweet green Mint mingled with spicy Oregano, breathing their fragrances, glistening and glowing in sunlight and dew. They danced when they saw me; asked no questions, made no judgments, anointed me with dew, toweled my dusty feet with warm sun, then sent me on to do for another what they had done for me.
