Bill Flick The signs that spring is truly here ...
T
here are in March those proverbial signs of spring -- robins, tree buds, a sighting of the first pair of cutoffs on the ISU Quad.
• Like the robins and tree buds, the guys from TruGreen, Weed Man and FS Lawn return as well, to plunk those “do not mow” flags in your yard.
But in spring-fickle Bill Flick Central Illinois where Columnist winter can be the last to leave the party, it’s not until mid- to late April, sometimes even early May, that the better signs -- those that winter is FINALLY actually even over -- get out there on display:
• The words “wind-chill factor” finally get deleted from Chuck Collins’ vocabulary.
• The wrought-iron furniture is finally out at places like Rosie’s, Panera, Noodles and Potbelly.
• There’s a line at Rainstorm and Precision Car Wash.
• There’s the vernal re-emergence of colored chalk and the hop-scotch grid on the sidewalk.
• After six months of pained restraint, someone finally pairs the words “Schooners” and “beer garden” in the same sentence. • You hear stereophonic motorcycles at 3 in the afternoon. • And lawn mowers.
• Your sump down in the basement bids “hullo” again, too. • Suddenly, after no activity for months, it’s difficult to find a parking place at Growing Grounds, Casey’s and in front of Lowe’s garden center. • And of course, Carl’s and Gene’s, too. • The man across the street -- the guy you haven’t seen since just past Thanksgiving -- is back out with a hose, washing down his car.
• The heavy-inked bar graph of energy usage on your NICOR or Ameren or Corn Belt bill finally begins to go the other way.
• There is the ecstasy of courtship among the mallards out on the Miller Park or Country Financial lawn and also that momma goose who three years running has chosen the Von Maur parking lot in Normal as its place to rest and have a family.
• You can hear again the radio of the guy in the next lane.
• Man and Weber are reunited. Savor the smells.
Yes, there are the “proverbial” signs of spring and then there are the signs that spring is finally, TRULY here. So get out there now and feed the squirrels. They love the corn and nuts. Feed the birds, too. They love the seed and suet. Feed the guys from TruGreen, Weed Man and FS Lawn as well. They prefer Schooners at 4 o’clock, I’d imagine.
• The blankets on the bed finally begin to be pulled back at night, instead of pulled up.
Bill Flick is at bflick@pantagraph.com. Or outdoors enjoying spring.
• You finally more need an umbrella than an ice scraper. • There’s a bright-sunny-and-warm-springday need for a traffic cop -- on Constitution Trail.

Luxury Homes in Bloomington-Normal

f you grew up having “champagne wishes and caviar dreams,” you may believe that luxury living is reserved for the rich and famous. Not so. Anyone can have a luxurious home right here in the Twin Cities. “Luxury has no dollar value,” explains Al Legg, veteran broker for RE/MAX Choice. “In other words,” he continues, “what luxury means is unique to the individual. It’s the beauty of a good design.” Braeden Barbour of O’Neal Builders adds, “To us, a luxury home follows the
creation of a one-of-a-kind floor plan that creates amazement to all that enter the space.” “Luxury has no dollar value... what luxury means is unique to the individual. It’s the beauty of a good design.” — Al Legg “It’s about quality and style,” agrees Marty Trunk of Trunk Bay Companies. It’s not about being big, it’s about being done right.” All three gentlemen know what they’re

talking about. Combined they have been making dream homes become a reality for more than 70 years. All agree that the kitchen is by far the component that gets the most attention. “It’s ironic, really,” observes Trunk. “The kitchen has become the new parlor. It’s where people gather. But in reality, fewer people actually cook. No matter where I go — if I’m in a mansion, people are in the kitchen. If I’m in a modest ranch home, people are in the kitchen. It’s about comfort.” “Well, those that do cook are passionate

about it,” offers Barbour. “The selfproclaimed chef who wants to show off — they make sure the kitchen has all the bells and whistles.” “Yes, it’s about function with an emphasis on entertaining,” adds Trunk.
ignited the spark, and gave me the drive and the courage to pursue this full time. That was 15 years ago, but because I love what I do — I’m so passionate about working with clients, helping them really see their space, — I feel I haven’t worked in those 15 years. It’s a gift.”
“Today, people are in it for the long haul... thoughtful in their approach to planning their home, because they intend to stay.” — Marty Trunk Each would estimate that the interest in luxury living is much higher than one would think. “Today, people are in it for the long haul” observes Trunk “This area is really no longer a temporary stopping point. People are thoughtful in their approach to planning their home, because they intend to stay.” “With Bloomington-Normal’s location in Central Illinois, 2-3 hours from
Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis, as well as our large employers, State Farm, Country Financial, our universities, and newly constructed hotels; many businesses are flocking to the area,” observes Barbour. “The well-maintained downtown areas attract many events and allow new residents to quickly feel at home, and outdoor recreational activities, especially our Constitution Trail that connects all of Bloomington and Normal; these are the reasons people choose to be here. We connect our clients’ dreams to reality and design and construct their homes so they enjoy time where life matters most. It’s a highly rewarding opportunity.” Trunk, who sees himself as a designer, agrees. “I’ve always had an interest in design, but it really came into focus when I helped design the food court at State Farm, where I worked for 11 years. That

“With Bloomington-Normal’s location in Central Illinois...many businesses are flocking to the area,” — Braeden Barbour “I see all ranges of homes,” offers Legg, “and in all my years, I have a sense about what people will want. Luxury is also something I extend to my clients in the service I provide. I look for extra special things that I can do to create a positive experience. The home-buying experience — when you get the keys to what you will call home — that moment should feel luxurious — like a warm blanket right out of the dryer, and that experience is the same, whether you have 2 bedrooms or 10.” Roughly 75 percent of O’Neal’s model home inventory is devoted to what would be considered luxury homes. “The market is steady for the first quarter,” offers Barbour, “but we are very optimistic of a busy summer.” Legg ads, “Bloomington-Normal is a great location for luxury homes, and with the lower interest rates, people are recognizing that this is the time to make their move. This is the place to be in Illinois.”

Do You Have Spider Veins?
S
pider veins are dilated blood vessels that form just under the skin and result in red, blue or purple clusters of veins visible near the surface of the legs. Spider veins appear due to the pressure of body weight, gravity and the task of carrying blood form the bottom of the body to the heart. Spider veins can also appear on the feet and face. Besides the cosmetic appearance of the veins, other symptoms may include skin redness; itching; a firm, tender and warm vein; and for some patients, pain and swelling. Spider veins can be caused by pregnancy, heredity, weight gain and standing or sitting for prolonged periods. These are the same factors that cause varicose veins.
Not all the visible veins on your legs are spider veins. Some of your visible veins may be larger size reticular or even varicose veins. If you have only spider veins and depending upon the severity, walking, anti-inflammatory medications, cold compresses and compression stockings are conservative treatment approaches. However, in most cases, sclerotherapy is the best option to eliminate spider veins.
and reabsorbed by the body. The number of treatments needed will vary depending upon the patient and the severity of the spider veins. Many of the veins will disappear during the first treatment and will continue to improve over time. The same vein may need to be treated more than once. Patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for spider veins. This procedure, performed in our office, involves using a very small needle to inject a medication called sclerosant directly into the vein. For larger veins that are below the surface of the leg, the physician will use ultrasound to visualize the veins to be treated and guide injections. Smaller veins on the very surface of the leg will be treated without the use of ultrasound. The sclerosant causes the lining of the vein to swell until the vessel is sealed shut. These collapsed veins will then be dissolved
If you are unhappy with the appearance of your spider veins, call The Vein Specialists at (309) 862-4000 to schedule a Consultation with one of our physicians or request an appointment online at www.ILveins.com. Multicultural Leadership Program 2016 Graduation Story and Photos by Deanna Frautschi
T
wenty-four new graduates of the Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP) were recognized April 9 as they received certificates of completion for a nine-month program designed to develop leaders for the community. Class participants also shared their work on community projects for Crossroads Handcrafts of the World, Home Sweet Home Ministries, Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Life Center for Independent Living and Milestones Early Learning Center. Annette Martinez, vice president of Human Resources at State Farm Corporate, was the keynote speaker. She shared her personal journey about growing up as a Latina in rural Colorado where she gained a first-hand understanding of poverty and difficult challenges. Her positive attitude and strong family values propelled her success. MCLP was founded in 2009 to gather diverse local residents and enhance their leadership skills and community service. There are 145 past graduates of the program. Participants are chosen on the basis of demonstrated commitment to community issues, desire to learn and intent to contribute to the community at large. For more information, call 309556-3589 or use contactus@bn-mclp.org.

This type of unique property becomes available infrequently. On 18.3 acres of which 6.81 is tillable, but does not have to be farmed, can be used for most livestock or other uses. Includes a private acre and a half pond with fishing dock. Lots of trees. Most of the property has been left natural for an abundance of wild life. Walking trails can be mowed. The home appears to be an A frame but it is not. All walls are drywalled and are square, the A part is great storage on either side of the second floor. Agent Interest.
