Welcome to Money Smart Week! “Money can’t solve all my problems, but it can solve my money problem.” I read this recently and had to laugh - I’ve definitely felt that way! Can you relate? You can solve your “money problem.” And we’re here to help! More than 100 community partners are joining together to help support financial education during Illinois’ annual Money Smart Week – April 20th through the 27th. Money Smart Week is a national financial literacy public awareness campaign sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to help individuals of all ages manage their personal finances. Bloomington-Normal was one of the first communities to host Money Smart Week. Now the program is active in more than 45 states through national partnerships such as the American Library Association and the Financial Planning Association. You can choose from a variety of seminars on different dates and at times and locations to fit into your busy schedule. Want tips to budget better, save for retirement or maximize investments? We have these topics covered, as well as unique offerings like traveling on a budget, shopping wisely and thriving financially as a single parent. Kids can join the fun too at Money Smart Kids Read. Hundreds of children throughout Illinois will read Berenstain Bears’ “Trouble With Money” and learn the basics about saving and spending money wisely.
And what would you expect to pay for this kind of information? $30? $100? How about FREE? That’s right, free, and the good thing about free is that it fits into everyone’s budget! Classes such as these can cost up to $200 but all of the Money Smart Week presenters and venues have donated their space and expertise for you. According to the Bloomington Money Smart Kid essay contest winner, Spencer Jackson, “Communities have endless possibilities on where to invest.” The Bloomington Junior High School eighth grader believes the best choice is to invest in education because it would have undeniable benefits. Why not put his advice to use and invest your time into becoming more educated about your finances? Review this calendar, choose a class to attend, bring a friend, and spread the word! You can also “like” us on Facebook for additional updates at facebook.com/MoneySmartWeekBN. See you at Money Smart Week!
