TEH SUMMER CAMP
2013
(we are only missing the sea)
Engine Room Europe is a three-year programme (April 2011-May 2014) of activities dedicated to independent cultural workers and their creative processes. It is initiated by Trans Europe Halles (TEH) and co-ordinated by Melkweg (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) in association with 10 coorganizing TEH members. Engine Room Europe has been funded with the support from the European Commission. This publication reflects the views only of the author, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.
In troduc t ion Welcome to the TEH Summer Camp, powered by Engine Room Europe, at OZU in Italy. This is to inform you about the programme, the practicalities, the workshop leaders, and to provide more information about everyone taking part. Through Engine Room Europe, between 2011-2013 there will have been a total of 30 staff exchanges for cultural workers of Trans Europe Halles centres across all of Europe. The Summer Camp is the moment when the exchangees can meet, share experiences and know-how, and is another moment for professional development, benefitting cultural workers as well as their centres. It also is an opportunity for everyone participating to increase their European connections and become (more) involved in the life of Trans Europe Halles. To put it short: We’re looking forward to meeting you all in person, and to sharing a creative and inspiring week with you! Annette, Lubos & the OZU team
Trans Europe Hal les, Eng ine Room Europe, Staff Exc hanges & the Sum mer Camp The Staff Exchange Programme and Summer Camp are programmes of Engine Room Europe, of which the major objective is to increase the capacity and sustainability of culture organisations and their workers. Engine Room Europe is coordinated by Melkweg (Amsterdam/NL), in close association with Trans Europe Halles (TEH), and the co-organising TEH members Fabryka (Lodz/PL), Mains D’Oeuvres (St Ouen/FR), Stanica (Zilina/SK), ufaFabrik (Berlin/DE), TNT (Bordeaux/FR), REX (Belgrade/ RS), NOASS (Riga/LV), Röda Sten (Göteborg/SE) La Friche Belle de Mai (Marseille/FR) and Tabacka (Kosice/SK). Since May 2011, the 12 co-organisers have initiated and implemented a programme of actions including artistic productions, festivals, conferences, debates, residencies, training, research, staff exchanges and a volunteer programme. An online resource will hold the memory of the project and collect views, experiences and processes.
Trans Europe Halles
Founded in 1983, Trans Europe Halles (TEH) is a European Network of 70 Independent Culture Centres in 25 European countries that connects pioneering cultural actors from Moscow, Budapest and Belgrade with creative forces in Amsterdam, Helsinki and Berlin. TEH is one of the most active cultural networks in Europe. It provides a stimulating platform for exchange, support and co-operation between its members. TEH runs and coordinates several bilateral and multilateral cultural projects. Examples include the setting up of a staff exchange programme, artists’ residencies, volunteer programmes and a capacity building programme for cultural leaders. Many of the current activities are powered by Engine Room Europe. www.teh.net
OZU
Founded in 2005, OZU is a residential cultural and arts centre, located in a former candy factory in the Sabine Hills, in the centre of Italy. The 1,250 square meters building has been restored and equipped for its new needs, becoming a multifunctional and versatile cultural space. OZU is a laboratory for production, a place for exchange, encounter and collaboration, with the aim to nourish everyone’s creative freedom. It is a place in which to develop new and innovative cultural programmes and activities. Above all OZU is an open group of people who are active in a shared space, with different attitudes and skills, enabling positive synergies. OZU is a sort of a little community, a mix between a big family and a creative lab. The situation is very informal and flexible, and with a big spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm. We love to eat all together, to meet other people and share experiences. www.ozu.it

Summer Camp Workshops and Trainers TEH Skills Map
TEH Skills Map describes the geography of our collective skills and knowledge, both the mountains of expertise, lush valleys of experience and, sad to say, deserts of oblivion. It is a stock take of the know-how of the people who make up the Trans Europe Halles network. But more importantly it is also a map of the goals and dreams of what we want to learn and improve, and what we need to do our jobs better. The Network Skills Map contributes to assess what we are really good at (and maybe we should share that knowledge?) and provides a guidance of what the professional development needs of the network are for the years to come. The overall result of the mapping of the network will be presented at the TEH Meeting 76 in Marseille at the end of 2013, but as a participant of the Summer Camp you will get the result by the end of it! The workshop leaders and facilitators are Bill Miller, Virginia Domina and Birgitta Persson. Bill Miller Bill is director of CSN, a community interest company based in England. Bill joined CSN in 2002 after working in education for 20 years. He now works internationally with public sector and third sector organisations developing leadership skills, evaluation systems, and professional qualifications for sector professionals. Bill has developed expertise in the evaluation of major publicly funded projects, and has evaluated programmes for the Arts Council, the Qualifications and Curriculum Agency, Comic Relief, and Mentor UK. He is currently evaluating the three-year funded cultural programme Engine Room Europe. bill@csncic.net
Virginia Domina Virginia comes from Argentina, but is half Italian. After finishing her studies in Business Administration in France, she decided to dive into what she loves most - arts and culture. She was a volunteer at Mains d´Oeuvres when she found out about the European Voluntary Service, and decided to apply. One year later, she moved to Lund, Sweden, where she currently works for both Trans Europe Halles and Mejeriet on a multitude of tasks. The Staff Exchange Summer Camp will be her last activity before finishing her EVS. During the Summer Camp, Virginia will be working together with Bill Miller on a pilot of a TEH project called ‘The Network Skills Map’. The idea is to find out what people are good at, or what skills they would like to learn or improve on a professional level. virginia@teh.net Birgitta Persson As Secretary General, Birgitta Persson is managing the Coordination Office with two more team members at the TEH member centre Mejeriet in Lund, Sweden. She is responsible for the strategic planning & advocacy of the network as well as the management, fundraising & economy and planning of the bi-annual international meetings. She is also part of the management team of the three-year long project Engine Room Europe. After cultural management studies at the University of Lund, Birgitta started her professional career at the cultural centre Mejeriet in Lund where for several years, she worked as Marketing Manager and Project Manager. She also organised hundreds of concerts, international circus projects, festivals and arts exhibitions at Mejeriet. During the Summer Camp Birgitta’s ambition is to get a good understanding of what the participants of the Staff Exchange Programme really appreciated and learned from their exchange and what they think can be better in the future in terms of the professional development of TEH. birgitta@teh.net
When we get serious about creativity, everything changes!
Changedesign will lead an intense workshop on creative collaboration and leading innovation for participants at the Summer Camp. This workshop embeds the fundamental principles of creative leadership and teamwork in the hearts, minds and bodies of the participants. Along with a number of highly effective innovation tools and methods, the participants will be introduced to an overall framework and mind-set for working with new ideas. In the workshop the participants will have the opportunity to formulate and work on challenges related to their professional area. Participants will leave this workshop with: • Insights into creative team work and leadership • Models for ideas generation and creative problem solving • Concrete tools for facilitating creativity and innovation that can be applied into your day-to-day life and work. This workshop is for anyone looking for new ways to unlock the creative potential of their teams - not only for creatives. At Changedesign we help organisations to grow the creative and innovative potential of their people and products and services. We do this by facilitating strategic innovation, and by increasing our clients’ own ability to lead innovation. We combine expertise in creative teamwork, innovation methodology, organisational change and leadership in a blueprint for building innovation capacity. Henrik Johansson Henrik is a graduated KaosPilot and works internationally as a process consultant in the fields of creativity and innovation. He works with organisations that wish to come up with radically new ideas and fundamentally want to leverage their creative capacity. His biggest passion is to facilitate learning and creative processes, helping groups solve tricky tasks and become smarter together. He has worked in various development projects for clients like The Singapore Ministry of Education, Green Peace Editorial and Campaign
Team, Innovation Lab Denmark. LEGO, Hyper Island, IKEA global vitality team, The Swedish Institute, Idea Factory Singapore, SJ (Swedish railway) and E.ON etc. He is also frequently invited as a public speaker. henrik@changedesign.dk

The Staff Exchange Manual Sprint
This session is aimed to evaluate the staff exchanges which have taken place so far, and to collaboratively produce a manual, sharing the experiences and recommendations of the participants for future exchange programmes, and those of other cultural networks. Annette Wolfsberger Annette is an Austrian-born producer and curator based in Amsterdam. Since 2007 she is producer and part of the curatorial team of Sonic Acts (NL) & Kontraste (AT). Developing sustainable future ideas for OZU
OZU has prepared a case study of itself and invites you to contribute with your know-how and ideas, for building the blocks to produce it with a sustainable, future strategy plan. OZU is a small and rather unstructured organisation as the people behind OZU see it as a fluid and complex experience. However, this leads to the fact that the main and sometimes only concern is to make the organisation survive. The main issue is its isolated location, which is a major obstacle to having more permanent staff, which is necessary to continue and develop OZU’s activities and projects. Current activities include artistic residencies with final events, olive picking, workshops such as writers retreat, T’ai Chi retreat, nutrition and ancient medicine workshop, dance and improvisation workshop, Indian traditional arts workshop, cinema school and local collaborations (related to the cultural programme in the villages). OZU’s questions for this session are therefore: • How can we increase OZU’s income to finance additional and more permanent staff? • Next to the current activities, which further activities could we develop within the next two years, and for which audiences, with a particular focus on the marketing process? After a brief presentation by OZU staff, small working groups will work together to develop recommendations.
Other activities
As well as thoroughly evaluating the staff exchanges and providing tailor-made professional development opportunities, we think it is important to take a step back, slow down and escape from our everyday working environment. The activities which we have planned for you vary from pasta making with local specialists to wine and olive oil tasting (with an opportunity to buy local products), a cinema night, and we’ll be closing the summer camp with a treasure hunt for you to get to know OZU’s local village of Monteleone Sabino.

I’m 27 and from Belgium but I’ve lived in London for almost four years. As much as I loved Belgium, there wasn’t much happening there and I knew there would be plenty of opportunities in London. I’ve now worked at Village Underground for three years. At VU I learned to run a venue with very limited resources and within a very small team, which is amazing as it’s like working with family.
