Mixed Media Art

In my house I dream with the Moon By: Susana Tavares 6 Paper and Cotton

Materials -a piece of chipboard -small pieces of scrapbook paper -a piece of lace -scissors -black pencil -permanent pen –white and black -water based glue -stamps -acrylic paint (white, cream, ochre and black) -oil pastels (pink and salmon)

1 - Draw the shape of a house in your piece of chipboard and cut.

2 -Choose different pieces of paper to decorate your house and draw the shape of the roof in the paper that you chose and cut.

3 - Cut or tear off various pieces of paper and place them over your house until being satisfied with the visual result.

4 - Glue all the pieces over the chipboard and glue well all the corners. I’m using a water based glue, but you can use white glue or a stick and let dry.

Paper and Cotton 7

5 - Hold your brush with a bit of acrylic paint in a tone that you like (I used a cream tone) and pass around your collages to combine ones with the others.

6 - With a black pencil draw elements that you like and some details (I drew a girl and a moon because that was my theme inspired by a phrase of a children’s song that I used for the collage).

7 - Use acrylic paint to paint the face (ochre), the girl’s clothes (white) and the moon (turquoise blue and metallic paint – white pearl) with a small brush for details.

8 - To paint the eyes I used a black permanent pen, and a white permanent pen to give some details.

8 Paper and Cotton

9 - To point out the edges of your little house, give colour to some details and give a little cheeks to our girl. I used oil pastels in pink and salmon colours.

10 - Choose one or two stamps to give even more detail to your arrangement. I chose a chinese lamp and stars that you can stamp with acrylic paint or with a stamp pad.

11 - To finish, draw a little bird with your black pencil in a white paper sheet, cut and glue it in the roof or in a place that you like.

12 - Your house is ready. If you want to protect it cover all with a layer of varnish when everything is dry. Idea: Drill your little house, put a ribbon and hang in a special place. Paper and Cotton 9

Zentangle

Zentangle By: Carla Pimentel

Zentangle ia a form of art created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, where they create beautiful images using repetitive patterns. It is easy, fun and above all is a relaxing art that stimulates attention, creativity and wellbeing. And you don’t need to be an artist to do it! If the patterns don’t occur to you, just follow the step by step of several different patterns called “tangles”, available on the internet. (www.zentangle.com)

It is not possible to fail! If you make a mistake, create another pattern and follow other direction, up, down... You will need paper, permanent ink pen, with a fine nib between 0.25mm and 0.5mm, a pencil and a ruber. Start drawing a free bord. Divide it with lines and fill the spaces between them with several patterns.

Don’t think a lot about what you will do. Let yourself go – relax! Zentangles are like dreams, they free flow!!! 14 Paper and Cotton

Cartonnage

Magic Spring Frame By: Ana Ribeiro

Materiais

- 1 piece of 2,5mm grey chipboard 25cmx25cm - 2 pieces of 2,5mm grey chipboard 25cmx8cm - 2 pieces of 2,5mm grey chipboard 24,5cmx8cm - 1 piece of cardboard (Bristol board) 25cmx25cm - Contact glue - Cartonnage glue - Scissors

22 Paper and Cotton

- X-acto - Bone folder - 3D foam pads - 2 sheets of scrapbooking paper (for the inside) - 3 sheets of scrapbooking paper (for the outside) - Embellishments for the outside - Photos or similar

1 - Cut a circle in the centre of the cardboard with the help of a small dish.

2 - Apply contact glue to the edges of the 4 chipboard pieces in order to assemble a box, without gluing the cardboard at the top.

3 - Cut the pattern paper chosen to wrap the inside of the box with 24,5cmx24,5cm.

4 -Cut 4 strips of pattern paper to line the inside box sides. Strips should measure 24cmx8cm.

Apply cartonnage glue to the paper and place it in the inside bottom of the box.

Apply glue to the strips and place them in the 4 inside box sides.

5 - Now you have to glue the “lid” – the cardboard with a circle – to the top of the box.

6 - Glue the scrapbooking paper sheet chosen with cartonnage glue to the side with the circle. Let dry a little and then make two cross sections in the area of the circle, taking care not to get close to the edge.

Let dry a little.

Paper and Cotton 23

7 - Remove part of that piece of paper and make small cuts all around, but without getting too close to the edge. Glue this margin to the interior, improving with the help of the bone folder.

9 - Cut 2 strips of pattern paper with 27cmx7cm and other 2 with 24,5cmx7cm. Start by gluing the longer strips, bending the ends to the respective side.

11 - After drying the box for 24 hours, you can glue a photo, a poem or a small text inside the box with the help of 3D foam pads. You can decorate the outside of the box as you like. In this case the choice fell on cut flowers in newspaper and coloured them afterwards.

24 Paper and Cotton

8 - Glue also the remaining sides. Then apply glue to a scrapbooking paper sheet and wrap the outside bottom of the box. Do the same with the edges.

10 - Glue the shorter strips.

Springtime Pillow By: PanopraMantas

28 Paper and Cotton

Materials

- 1 square of linen 50cmx50cm (front side of cover) - 2 rectangles of linen 50cmx35cm (back side of cover) - Scraps of different coordinated fabrics to make hexagons (flowers+side garnish) - 32 hexagons templates (kit for sale in PanopraMantas) - Zig Zag Ribbon - Fusible Wadding 50cmx50cm - Rotary ruler+ Tailor’s chalk (In this project is considered a seam allowance of 0,5cm or ¼”in if you use a ¼”- inch foot.)

Mounting of the front side of Pillow Cover We begin by iron the fusible wadding on to the reverse of the linen square 50cmx50cm, according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Using a rotary ruler and tailor’s chalk line up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the ruler in the 45 degree angle and draw lines that are distant from each other 1.5”. Do the same for the other side so as to cross ones with the others. Stitch over this lines. Then we will prepare the hexagons, using the technique of “English paper piecing” explained bellow. 11 for the side garnish 21 for the 3 flowers With the linen 50cmx50cm on the table, choose the best position for the lateral ornament and for the flowers. When you have found a position that satisfies you, you’ll sew the hexagons to the linen with a blind stitch. Then you sew the zig zag ribbon (the flower stalk).

Mounting of the back side of Pillow Cover We take now one of the rectangles of 50cmx35cm and on the long side we make a narrow seam – we fold 1cm to the wrong side of the fabric and again fold 1 cm more. Press with iron and stitch. Same procedure for the other rectangle.

Finishing Lay the front of pillow cover, right side up on a flat surface. Align one of the rectangles (long side), with the wrong side up, with the top edge of the front side and the other rectangle with the bottom edge of the front. You will notice that these two rectangles overlap for about 10cm. It is the opening through which will enter the pillow insert. We sew all around reinforcing fabric where they overlap.

Technique of “English paper piecing” In a white paper, preferably a little heavier than normal paper, draw and cut the hexagon shape. Cut out each shape of hexagon from fabric, leaving a 0,5cm (1/4in) seam allowance all around. Pin the paper shape, centering the template, to the wrong side of the fabric. Turn the seam allowance to the wrong side over the edge of the paper shape. Tack along each side in turn and stitch through the fold to hold it securely. Place two hexagon shapes right sides together. Make a blind stitch along the edge. Continue adding hexagons until complete. Iron to press the seams.Remove papers and the tacking stitches. “Say to the mother” DECORATED BISCUITS SHAPED LIKE A CARTOON BALLOON By: Lume Brando

34 Paper and Cotton

Ingredients: For the biscuits: - 300g flour - 150g butter, softened - 150g sugar - 1 egg, size L Templates of balloons: – printed or drawn on a cardstock an cut out.

Notes:

The dough of biscuits yields enough; make some balloon shaped to customize and offer, and use the rest of the dough to make different cookies, with different cutters; Sugar paste will remain, but we need more than the paste used in the balloons to roll and cut.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Stir until well combined. Divide the dough into two flat ball shaped portions, wrap each in cling film and chill for about 30 minutes. Pre heat the oven to 200º. Remove the dough from the cold. Roll the dough onto a floured surface and cut out the biscuits with a smooth and sharp-edged knife, using the templates. Move to a non-stick pan or lined with baking parchment paper and chill for a further 15 minutes. Bake them in oven for 12 minutes or untill they are well browned. After cold, store them in an airtight box until the time to decorate. For decoration - White sugar paste (about 30g per biscuit) - Jam Qb - Edible ink pens - Templates of balloons – printed or drawn on a cardstock an cut, sligtly smaller than those used to cut out the biscuits. Mix well and roll the sugar paste on a surface dusted with powdered sugar. Leave to air a few minutes to get drier. With the help of the templates, cut the balloons in the same number of biscuits. Let the paste air-dry well (from one day to the next, for example), so after that it is easier to write with pens. Brush top of the biscuits with jam and spread the sugar paste on the balloons. Leave together for a few minutes and decorate the balloons with messages to taste. Wrap up in cellophane bags and make a MOM HAPPY!

The complexity of being a teenager!

A

dolescence – transitional period between childhood and adulthood -represents a stage of human development marked by profound biological, cognitive and psychosocial transformations in the lives of adolescents. According to the World Health Organization adolescence understands the age group between 10 and 19 years. Adolescence is a dynamic and complex process of maturation in which the teenager constructs his identity, having as ultimate goal, his autonomy and independence. Characteristically adolescence is divided into 3 stages (early, middle and late), is not a uniform or homogeneous period and features a broad spectrum of variability of teenager to teenager who is the result of numerous factors including genetic, nutritional, environmental, and is also influenced by social and cultural aspects. Despite this variability, all teens are faced with the same tasks, such as: upgrading to their new body image, sexuality, the discovery of new ways of

38 Paper and Cotton

thinking, the development of autonomy, which is necessary for insertion into the world of adulthood, but they are not always easily overcome, and often source of concern both for the teen as for adults who interact with him. Early adolescence (10-13 years) – is marked by the onset of puberty, emphasizing at this stage the physical changes, concerns about the appearance, mood changes and the need for privacy. In middle teens (14-17 years) the peer group takes on great importance, is the peek of family disputes, the feeling of omnipotence and experimentation and risk behaviours. In the final stage, late adolescence (17-19 years) – acquire the ability to develop more complex reasoning, consolidate abstract thinking with the establishment of a sexual identity, vocational and individual morality. Adolescence is a period of vulnerability and experimentation, subject the teenager to risks and carries important morbidity-especially problems related to sexuality, such as pregnancy or sexually

transmitted diseases, drug use, tobacco and/ or alcohol, disturbance of foraging behaviour, reactive disorders to the life events or phases of development. Data show that from the age of 15 accidents take on a prominence as leading cause of mortality. Many of these problems have in common the fact that they are mostly behavioural events and therefore likely to be prevented. The consultation of surveillance of health in adolescence provides an excellent opportunity to address these issues, provide anticipatory care and treat specific disorders of adolescence that may pass unnoticed (changes of growth and pubertal development, acne, gynaecological pathology, disturbance of feeding behaviour and risk behaviour, decreased school performance, difficulties in interpersonal relationships, deviant or violent behaviours, depressive symptoms and sleep habits change). The consultation consists of an interview tailored to teens that allows a psychosocial assessment and identifies signs of alarm. The general physical examination with the

Health

assessment of the weight, height and calculation of body mass index, blood pressure measurement, evaluation of pubertal development, evaluation of column and deformities are also an integral part of the consultation. The consultation must be performed on a regular basis, ideally annual, however if this is not possible should be done at least at every point of adolescence in order to early diagnose health problems or behaviours that jeopardize the health of the adolescent and the surrounding society.

In the Victorian Era, Glasgow had the reputation of being the most beautiful Victorian city of Scotland

George Square

Glasgow (Ghlaschu in Scottish Gaelic) is the largest city in Scotland, occupies an area of about 175,5 km2 and is the third most populous city of United Kingdom, with about 580 690 inhabitants. Although its celtic name means “dear green place”, Glasgow is more related to an industrial past. It is situated in the Scotland Lowlands, along the banks of River Clyde that crosses the city. Grew around a cathedral founded in the VI century and in 1451 became the birthplace of a university, the second to be established in Scotland. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the city and the surrounding region expanded to 42 Paper and Cotton

become one of the main centres of engineering, steel making and shipbuilding, stimulated by Lanarkshire coal. Glasgow was known as “the second city of the British Empire” in the Victorian Era. At that time had the reputation of being “the most beautiful Victorian city of Scotland”. It was a commercial centre of great importance from the XVI century. Soon became a centre for importing tobacco from the American colonies. The city offers visitors many museums (most with free admission). The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Museum of Transport, The Museum of Piping and private collections as the

It is located in the surroundings of the Glasgow University, a building built with red sandstone, and it is the most visited museum of Scotland. It has works of art by Botticeli, Rembrandt and Dali and many decorative objects, glass panels, furniture, Paper and Cotton 45

pottery and jewelry, from many countries. The city is known for its architecture and its parks, of which I highlight the magnificent Kelvin Park in the area of the University campus. Glasgow is the city with the greatest night-time entertainment of Scotland and of course, the pubs are essential in its life. It has extensive shopping areas, some of them exclusively pedestrian. The main shopping streets are Buchanam, Argyle and Sauchiehall and are all located near the main city square, in the centre of it, with the name of George Square, in honor of King George III. Peacock on top in Art Noveau Style. 48 Paper and Cotton

These streets have elegant victorian-style buildings, and in them it is possible to find branches of the largest stores in the country, shopping centres and even a covered street with 32 jewelers under one roof. One of the most emblematic shoppings of the city is the Princes Square Shopping Centre, a magnificient building whose facade has a metal peacock on top and inside it we found a glass roof in Art Noveau Style. Glasgow combines urban mayhem and black humor but is so friendly, that sometimes downright unnerving. Climate:

How to get there:

The Glasgow’s climate is classified as Oceanic and is influenced by Gulf Stream. The downside of this is that Glasgow does not get distinct seasons like many other western European cities. Winters are cold and overcast, with a mean temperature of 4,0ºC (39,2ºF), spring months mild and pleasa with a mean of 15,9ºC (60,6ºF) and summer months that vary from day to day, ranging from cool and wet to warm and sunny days, although with a mean of 19,7ºC (67,5ºF). Autums with increasing precipitation, with mean tenperature around 12,7ºC (54,9ºF).

The city has two airports: the International Airport and the Prestwick Airport. Both have direct and daily connects with the Airport of Faro. Currently easyJet has 3 weekly direct flights between Faro and Glasgow, some from Lisbon with scale in London. Ryanair has flights from Porto with scale in London. The tradicional airline companies as TAP Portugal and British Airways connect Lisbon, Porto and Faro with Glasgow with a scale in London.
