How to stamp on metal foil

TO METAL FOILING

I

f you’ve seen metal foiled cards before and been intrigued to try it, then you’ve come to the right place. You don’t need a fancy craft machine, believe it or not – just our crafty guide and a few special items from your stash. We have our trusty designer Sara Naumann to thank for this glam tutorial, so get stuck in below!

WHAT IS METAL FOILING? Metal foiling gives materials a gorgeous surface on which to stamp and heat emboss, resulting in fabulous toppers for your cards. The metallic look is on-trend at the moment, so the technique is essential for any papercrafter who wants to complete their portfolio. It is very versatile too; because the foil comes as a sheet, you can cut it with scissors or a paper trimmer, or even die-cut or punch it into whatever shapes you like. CAN YOU DO IT BY HAND RATHER THAN USING A MACHINE? Normally, metallic foiling requires a heat source like a laminator or multiway craft machine, such as the TODO from Create & Craft (createandcraft.tv). Here I’ve used foam adhesive sheets designed to work with foil, so no heat is required. Simply press your foil sheet on the foam adhesive, burnish and lift.

Shopping List iCraft Deco Foil, £5.45 for five sheets, iCraft Foam Adhesive, £5.99 for two sheets, 01765 690069, barnyarns.co.uk WOW! stamps and embossing powder, 0870 777 8781, wowembossingpowder.co.uk

The foil will adhere to the foam giving you a fun, shiny surface, then just stamp and emboss as you would on paper. The foam adhesive is about as thick as average 3D foam pads, so it adds dimension to the design without extra bulk. HOW CAN I CREATE THE DESIGN ON THE RIGHT? To make your own thank you card like mine, start with a piece of foam adhesive and cover it with gold foil. Stamp and emboss the leaf in green and cut out, leaving a thin border. Take teal card, peel off the liner from the foam adhesive leaf and stick it at the top. Cover foam adhesive with gold foil and mount on white, navy and green card. Stamp, trim and glue the sentiment, then wrap with gold metallic thread and secure to the centre of a white blank. Tie a knot in gold silk ribbon and attach, and you’ve got a wonderfully sleek and stylish greeting to give out!

A BONE FOLDER IS IDEAL FOR BURNISHING THE METALLIC FOIL TO THE FOAM ADHESIVE SHEET, OR USE A SPOON OR SCISSOR HANDLE

“The Flights of Fancy stamp set from WOW! Embossing is a striking collection of leaf images. They print beautifully and add a fresh look to spring and summer projects” SARA NAUMANN, DESIGNER

1

Trim foam adhesive to size. Remove one liner and cover with the foil sheet, then burnish on both sides

Gently peel the foil sheet away from the foam adhesive. If any foil has not transferred, repeat step 1

Stamp your image on the foiled foam adhesive with embossing ink

Sprinkle with embossing powder, tap off the excess and heat to set

Sunshine STAGE

Make a paper puppet spectacle with our summery project

T

he intricate detailing and cute style of Kim Dellow’s crafty creation make it the perfect addition to your home this season. Put on your very own summer show and immediately feel transported to a plush green field with a picnic in tow. What’s playing at your sunshine stage today?

You Will Need  Craft essentials (see p92)  PaperArtsy JOFY Stamp Sets: 41, 42  Kaisercraft Finders Keepers Paper Pack  Ink pad: black

1 To make the back of the stage, construct a 12cm x 18cm box from card, ensuring the ceiling and walls are both 6cm wide. 2 Draw two 13cm parallel lines 12cm apart onto card and draw a curve at one end using a plate as a template. Add a 1.5cm border around the curve and sides. 3 Cut out your shape and score a line 4cm from the straight end. Clip tabs into the round edge and the line. Fold the straight end and all the tabs down, then use a 4cm wide panel of card to wrap around the stage. Glue in place. 4 Cover the inside of the back with patterned paper. Poke holes into both walls at 16cm and 10cm high, then make

bunting and push the ends through them. Cover the back of the stage and floor with coloured paper. 5 Stamp and colour the two girl images, attach a stand to the bottom of each and secure to the stage. 6 Stick complementing paper to the roof and add a sentiment with 3D foam pads.
