YOU WILL NEED: Craft essentials (see p92) Fiskars Power Punch: 1.5 flower Aluminium drink can Embossing folder: floral Gilding wax: bronze Metallic brads Tin snips Cotton cloth
Create a vintage look by punching shapes from an aluminium can
1 2 3
Wash out a drink can then use tin snips to cut off the top and bottom and a slit down the side. Flatten the sheet. Punch several flowers from the metal sheet, then use an embossing folder to add a pretty design. With half of the flowers print side upwards and the others with the plain silver side up, apply gilding wax to the surface with your fingertip. Work the colour into the embossed surface before buffing away the excess with a soft cotton cloth. Bend the petals up and layer two blooms together. Pierce the centre of the layers with sharp scissors and join with a metallic brad. Cover a 10.5cm x 16cm white blank with floral paper. Matt a different print onto a 6.5cm x 12cm rectangle of green card, leaving a 2mm border. Colour the edges of the panel with gilding wax and wrap the top and bottom with gold twine before fixing to the centre of the card with 3D foam pads. Write a sentiment with a metallic pen. Place this left of the centre on the card and arrange the flowers around it, fixing them in place with 3D foam pads.

QUILLED
christmas decs Elizabeth Moad gets in the festive filigree mood with intricate makes
CHRISTMAS COILS
Quilling is a must-try technique at Christmas. The lovely swirls and coils really give a handmade card or decoration a special touch. That's not to mention the satisfaction that comes with creating a bespoke design, especially when it feels like the shops only seem to sell generic decorations year on year.
TOP TOOLS
You only need three items to give the technique a go; a quilling tool, strips of coloured paper and glue. Some quillers roll the coils with their fingers, however I always teach quilling with a tool as it makes the process much quicker and easier. The speed that it can give you means you can make plenty more coils than you would otherwise.
MAKE AND MASTER
My three designs have a light, open feel to them that show off the elegance of paper filigree. It's easy for beginners to understand, too - the 's' shaped scrolls are simply strips of paper coiled at each end in different directions, and when grouped together, will always make your creations stand out. 68
~ TOP TIP ~ FOR A 3D EFFECT, ALLOW THE END OF SOME COILS TO SIT ON TOP OF THE BASE LAYER OF THE TREE

MASTER CLASS
YOU WILL NEED: Craft essentials (see p92) 3mm quilling papers: light green, dark green, red, pink, orange 2mm quilling papers: black, brown Peel-off stickers: silver star, Happy Christmas sentiment White frame: 13cm x 18cm Foam board Graph paper Pins
BAUBLE BEAUTIES
1
Wrap a length of light green quilling paper around a circular object 7cm in diameter. Stick the ends together and wrap two more lengths on top of the first to strengthen it. Pin the green band of paper onto your foam board work surface. Take a 20cm length of pink quilling paper and using the quilling tool, make a loose closed circular coil 1.2cm in diameter. Make five more coils the same size and glue in a row inside the green ring. Using a 20cm length of red quilling paper, coil each end into an open 's' scroll shape.
2 3
FRAMED TREE
1
Cut a 9.5cm x 13.5cm rectangle from light green card for the background. Make the first 's' scroll by taking a 10cm length of light green quilling paper and 10cm from dark green. Hold them together and coil one end into a spiral. Take two 20cm lengths, one light green and one dark, and quill the length completely to create a closed coil. Pinch into a long teardrop shape and glue at the top of the green card panel in the centre, along with the first coil. Repeat to make more 's' scrolls and closed coils, glueing them to the base one by one to form a tree. With 7cm lengths of red, make tight circular coils for berries. Tuck in between the teardrop shapes. Add a silver star peel-off sticker to the top of the tree, then mount the card onto foam board and red card the same size as the white frame. Clip into the frame and display.
Start by glueing some coils to the inside of the green ring, gradually filling the inner space as you go. Make the top of the bauble by glueing two strips of green quilling paper end to end and making a closed coil. Pinch one side to create two corners and fix the straight edge created to the top of the circle. Take a length of pink and wrap around your finger, securing it through one of the outer coil layers. Add a mini gemstone to each pink spiral to finish.

3 Quill open scrolls from red paper, then arrange and secure to the inside of the green circle
