Be my

Valentine

We discover the history of the Valentine’s card he first written Valentine's greeting dates back to the fifteenth century and is usually attributed to Charles, Duke of Orléans, France. He wrote a romantic greeting to his wife from the Tower of London, where he was confined after the Battle of Agincourt. A couple of centuries later, the tradition had become widespread throughout Europe. The idea caught on in America by the eighteenth century, with greetings often religious in nature. Nuns made some of the earliest cards of this type, spending many days painstakingly creating papercut designs with scissors. By the early 1800s, Valentine's cards were starting to be manufactured in factories, often featuring simple black and white painted pictures. Popular motifs included turtledoves, Cupid and hearts. Back in Britain, the 'penny post' of the Victorian era made it easier than ever to send Valentine's cards. Photographic images with a printed postcard on the reverse were often used, with photography studios employing artists to hand-tint the monochrome images. Many Victorian greetings featured elaborate honeycombed tissue elements, watercolours, embossed paper hearts and lace, and it was not unusual for a manufactured Valentine like this to cost a whole month's earnings.

T

FROM THE PAST WHY NOT MAKE A VICTORIAN-STYLE VALENTINE'S CARD FOR A LOVED ONE THIS YEAR?

Acrostic:

Rebus:

Write a verse in which the first letter of each line spells out a name

Write a romantic verse, omitting some words and replacing them with a tiny picture instead, e.g. an image of an eye in place of the word 'I' or a bee for the word ‘be’

Pin-prick:

Use a pin to make a design made up of tiny holes

Cut-out: Fold a sheet of paper several times and cut into it to create a lacy design

old school This delicate card is possibly the world's oldest printed Valentine. It was printed in 1797 and sent by Catherine Mossday to Mr Brown of London and features the following charming verse around the edge:

"Since on this ever Happy day, All Nature's full of Love and Play Yet harmless still if my design, 'Tis but to be your Valentine"

Perfect Gift Boxes Wow family and friends with a gorgeous gift box by adapting our simple template – here’s three designs to get you started!

o matter the occasion or individual, it has never been so simple to create gift boxes bursting with style and personality, all thanks to Jenny Pearce. Using an exclusive template, pretty cardstock and elegant embellishments, Jenny shows us how to channel our creativity to make the sophisticated look easily achievable.

TRY AN OVAL APERTURE 1 Form the basic box shown in the handshots on p89 using white floral patterned cardstock. 2 To create the windows snip a 7cm x 8cm piece of clear film, securing it to the oval opening. Stick four 3cm x 7cm sections behind each rectangle aperture.

3 To create the dividers, trim two 4cm x 11.5cm panels of white card and slot them together centrally, placing inside the box. 4 Where marked in red on the template, insert a 22cm length of blue ribbon, tying it into a bow. Stick blue gems around the aperture and seal the box with an adhesive dot under the flap.

masterclass masterclass masterclass How to make a basic box USE YOUR ONLINE TEMPLATE

1 Print the template and draw around it on your chosen cardstock

2 Cut out the design and score along the dashed lines

3 Punch holes where indicated and assemble the box, folding the side flaps in and sticking together

“I designed this gift box so that it could be adapted in a variety of ways. Use my gift box template with or without an oval aperture or internal dividers, to suit your style” JENNY PEARCE, DESIGNER

PRETTY PAPER FLOWERS 1 Take butterfly patterned card and create the basic box shown in the handshots above, ignoring the oval aperture and bow holes. Line the rectangular apertures with 4cm x 11.5cm pieces of clear film. 2 Tie blue ribbon around the centre of the box. Punch a 5cm scallop-edged circle from green card and a smaller one from pink card. Layer them together and affix to the lid centrally. Punch six branches from green card and stick them around the edge. 3 Punch a variety of different-sized flower shapes from pink and blue card and layer them in decreasing size order as shown, alternating between colours. Curl the petals to create a 3D effect. Affix silver beads to finish.

TRY ME FIRST! Line the inside of the box with co-ordinating patterned card. 2 Make the dividers by adhering two pieces of 4cm x 11.5cm patterned card back to back; trim and slot together to create a diagonal cross then place inside. Attach clear film to the rectangular apertures. 3 Adhere the decorative element to the box top and stamp with your message. Affix a button to the opening flap and fold down the side lid flaps, ensuring they are outside of the box.
