3 Leave the upright strip to dry completely before filling parts of the outline with loosely coiled short strips of paper. Turn some strips into swirls and position them so they appear to extend from inside the letter.

2 Glue two strips of quilling paper together, keeping the paper flat while the glue dries. Fit the edge of the paper strip to the outline, folding it at any corners and bending it round curves, before fixing it in place using dots of PVA glue.

4 Mount the letter panel onto a slightly larger pink card rectangle, then onto a bigger piece of green card. Insert this into your chosen frame.

1 Sketch the outline of your chosen letter onto a 9cm x 12cm rectangle of white card. Trace over these lines with a fine line coloured pen and rub away the pencil when the ink is dry.

Top tip

ho doesn't love receiving a big bunch of flowers? The only problem is the expiry date. Make an everlasting bouquet with Corinne Bradd's easy-to-follow guide. We have two models to show you, including kusudama and lilies. The kusudama is a traditional origami shape. Combine with lovely lily blooms for a showstopping display.

1 Cut five 7cm squares from paper and fold one in half diagonally. Keep the fold at the top and bring the two outer points down to the bottom, making a square shape

4 Push the outer edges of the kites back over to enclose the previous fold

54 papercraftermagazine.co.uk

2 Open up the folded flaps, place your finger inside and squash fold to make a kite shape on each side of the central square

5 Run a thin line of glue along one folded edge and then curve over and fix to the other folded edge without creasing the paper

KUSUDAMA TRADITIONALLY HAVE FIVE PETALS, BUT CAN LOOK BEAUTIFUL WITH MANY MORE. START WITH A BIGGER OR SMALLER SQUARE TO CREATE DIFFERENT SIZES.

3 Fold up the top points of the kite shapes to line up with the edge of the square

6 Clip the glued edges with a small peg while the adhesive dries if necessary. Fold all the squares in this way and stick together along the folded edges

“Literally meaning ‘medicine ball’ in Japanese, the kusudama originally contained healing herbs, incense or pot pourri. Nowadays it’s used more for decoration” CORINNE BRADD, DESIGNER

1 Fold a square of paper in half horizontally and vertically. Open out, turn over and fold in half diagonally in both directions. Turn in the sides of the paper

4 Fold the shorter sides of the kite shape to the middle and crease. Unfold and repeat for the other three sides

7 Take the long points of the kite shape and fold down over the short points on all sides to make a diamond shape

2 Lift one side of the triangle and open the layers before squash folding the edge against the centre of the triangle to make an upside down kite shape

5

3 Flip over and repeat. Fold the two kites in half so that the remaining two points can be squash folded

6

Crease the kite in half from top to bottom. Lift a bottom point and hold against the top while carefully flattening the sides to the middle

8 Fold the top edges of the diamond into the centre on all four sides. The top point will become the base of your lily

This should create a smaller kite. Repeat this action for the other three sides

9 Hold the base of the flower and curl the petals of the flower over a pen to open the lily out papercraftermagazine.co.uk 55

LOVE TO MAKE

WE CAUGHT UP WITH HAYLEY WILKINSON, MARKETING MANAGER AT HUNKYDORY CRAFTS, TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THIS SUCCESSFUL CRAFTY BUSINESS HOW DID HUNKYDORY CRAFTS BEGIN? The story began in 1990 at a humble little wool and needlecraft shop in Preston, Lancashire. The owners, Ann and David Newhouse, bought some peel-off stickers one day to add to handmade cards. They were quickly hooked on this new idea and decided to expand their shop. They created Cardcraft Plus as a mail order company. Before long, Hunkydory Crafts was born and we have never looked back! WHAT INSPIRES HUNKYDORY’S CRAFTY RANGES? The list is endless! Due to high demand, some of our most popular collections are released every year. Art Deco is a favourite for Hunkydory fans, so we try to bring out a new Deco-themed range annually. As we are all crafters, we understand what card makers want from a collection, so we always offer a range of themes to suit everyone’s tastes. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE RANGES? My favourite collection from 2015 so far has to be Birds of Britain. It's so different from anything we've done before and we're all very proud of the success it's had. Butterfly Bouquet is another one I love. Flowers and butterflies make pretty, feminine greetings that are suitable for all-year round card making. It’s a real investment! WHAT MAKES HUNKYDORY’S COLLECTIONS SO SPECIAL? Quality! All our papercraft products are manufactured in Preston and everything we use in production is UK sourced, from paper and cardstock to the beautiful foil you see on all of our collections. Our ranges are all printed onto 350gsm Adorable Scorable cardstock. This has been engineered to guarantee the perfect score and fold without cracking or feathering. The quality of our product helps you to give a professional finish to your cards.

On the web

HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHICH BRANDS TO STOCK? We are a family-run business built from a love of crafting, so we tend to sell the very products that we use ourselves. All of the alternative brands we stock on our website fully complement Hunkydory ranges so you can extend your crafting even further. For example, the Quickie Glue Pen works excellently with our Diamond Sparkles Glitters and Collall Photo Glue is ideal for matting and layering with our cardstock. WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING UP IN THE FUTURE THAT OUR READERS WILL BE EXCITED ABOUT? We have a brand-new Window to the Heart Collection which will be released in mid-spring. The special designs are suitable for many occasions and the end result is a heartfelt keepsake that will take centre-stage on any mantelpiece.

Hunkydory has a brand new, shiny website! Go to hunkydorycrafts.co.uk to view all the gorgeous ranges, find the latest offers and shop to your heart's content. See cardcraftplus.co.uk for even more papercraft goodness.

JUMP ON BOARD “I love to make non-standard sized cards but this means regular envelopes aren’t suitable. However, the We R Memory Keepers Envelope Punch Board is a great tool for me. It has a score guide, corner punch, reverse corner punch and a bone folder all within a handy board. It's so quick and easy to use and a fantastic way to make lovely envelopes” COLETTE SMITH, DESIGNER

e'd craft all day if we could, but unfortunately life tends to get in the way. There are only so many times you can put off doing the washing so you can make more cards. The key is productivity. If you've only got limited crafting time, ensure you make the most of it. We've sought out the best tips from the top to help you. Our crafty experts share their invaluable advice to help make your life easier and speed up the way you create.

CHANGE BLADES RLY REGULA

SHARPEN YOUR WITS “You'll be surprised how much difference a sharp craft knife or pair of scissors makes. I regularly change my blades to ensure my cuts are always precise and accurate which ultimately saves time. Not only will it be quicker, but safer too, as you're more likely to slip when using a blunt blade” TRACEY DAYKIN-JONES, DESIGNER

KEEP TRIM “I find using a paper trimmer or guillotine is quicker than using a craft knife and ruler for straight cutting of paper or card. I also like to use the ruler printed on it as a measuring guide, as it saves time. It's always right there, so I don't have to rummage around for a ruler among my crafting stash!”

“I recommend Glue Dots to everyone. Standard glue can be messy, but these make everything so much quicker and easier. They're perfect for card making because, best of all, they don't require any drying time”

DECIDE TO DIE CUT

DON'T DIY (THIS ONCE) “My biggest time saving tip is to buy ready-cut quilling strips. Cutting your own takes such a long time, and you can't guarantee exact uniformity of width when doing it by hand. Your free bumper quilling kit is a good place to start!” ELAINE BENNETT, EDITOR

WHAT’S YOUR BEST CRAFTING TIP? LET US KNOW ON TWITTER @PAPER CRAFTERMAG OR AT FACEBOOK.COM/ PAPER CRAFTERMAG

“Every crafter should invest in a die-cutting machine. It saves a huge amount of time that you'd usually spend meticulously cutting and embossing by hand. The new Big Shot Plus from Sizzix helps you to cut a vast range of materials including tissue paper, leather, textiles and even mount board. Plus it does it in no time at all. Tweet us your thoughts with the hashtag #sizzixplus” PETE HUGHES, SIZZIX DESIGNER

“My best tip for efficient crafting is to keep a 'Frequently Used Items' container – mine is a clear plastic box with dividers. This holds my most-used adhesives, embossing powder, ink pads, scissors, and other things I use almost every time I craft. When I had limited work space, I could bring it out when I was making and then easily stash it away afterwards. Now it just stays on my craft table and I don't have to hunt around for the supplies I use most often” SARA NAUMANN, DESIGNER

“My very favourite tool is my corner rounding punch. I used to hate doing it by hand, as it was so time consuming. Fiskars' 3-in-1 punch lets you do three different kinds of corner which is incredibly useful. Not only do I save time, but my cards look more professional too!” CORINNE BRADD, DESIGNER 3-in-1 Corner Squeeze Punch, see fiskars.co.uk for stockists

“My top tip is to buy some craft punches in common shapes. Not only do they present you with a quick way of making a hole or adding a decoration, but you are also left with the shapes. It's so much quicker than trying to hand-cut a fiddly motif and gives a far better end result” SARAH CROSLAND, EDITOR, CRAFTS BEAUTIFUL
